What is health coaching? How does it work? These were the questions that crossed my mind when I deliberated whether to enrol in the Accredited Health Coaching Course. I consulted my inner circle, Nah, you’re a pharmacist and worked on the Phone Lines, you don’t need it. However, when I conducted medicine reviews, I felt like I could dig deeper with patients and transform their health habits, long-story short. I enrolled and completed the course. What was it like? The experience was life-changing. As part of the course, you bring real-life habits to practice with other students. Many times I put my hand up to be coached by Shivaun, just because the results were transformative. I no longer am a potato chip addict, have 1 less self-limiting belief and am on my way to become My Dream Self. Shivaun Conn is a Certified Health Coach, Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), Accredited Nutritionist (AN), Certified Trainer and Assessor, Director of Accredited Health Coaching Australia, Director of Discovery Health Coaching, former Vice President of the Australasian Society of Lifestyle Medicine and Professional Member of Health Coaches Australia & New Zealand (HCANZA). Shivaun has worked for 19 years as a dietitian, health coach and presenter. Shivaun currently coaches individuals in nutrition and lifestyle, trains practitioners in health behaviour change, and develops health and nutrition programs across a range of sectors. Today, I managed to persuade Shivaun to join us and share her secrets of behaviour change.

20 Apr 2023 | Yvonne Coleman: Unveiling the Secrets of Drug-Nutrient Interactions | 00:46:42 | |
Welcome to The Enlightened Pharmacist podcast. Does what you eat affect your medicines? There have been awareness of drugs or medicines and how it affects the way we absorb micronutrients through our experience with statins, iron and thyroxine supplementation, This is because medicines and foods sometime get broken down by the same pathway and can interact. An example is grapefruit juice and some statins: too much grapefruit juice can increase the amount of some statins. Calcium can reduce the absorption of thyroxine and so on. My guest today, Yvonne Coleman has taken a step further and collated a database to put all the research together.
In this episode, we explore the topic of drug-nutrient interactions, a sophisticated interconnection that exists between what we eat and how our bodies absorb medications. Here are some of the key takeaways from our discussion: · We delved into the mechanisms by which medicines and foods can interact, with specific examples of grapefruit juice and statins, and calcium and thyroxine. · Yvonne shared valuable insights on how to identify if a drug-nutrient interaction is occurring, and what to look out for when taking certain medications. · We also explored resources available to healthcare professionals and patients to support the management of drug-nutrient interactions. · Yvonne’s 3 healthy things she does on a daily basis to optimise her health (hint: think Jerusalem artichokes) Remember to check out the show notes for links and resources on this topic. Hi everyone! Welcome to Episode #11 of The Enlightened Pharmacist.
Why your intake of glutamate can impact your mood?
Today’s topic is very close to my heart: mental illness and glutamate excitatoxicity. I lost a dear friend and colleague to suicide. The consequences of this leaves a tsunami of disbelief, guilt to those left behind.
I was very excited when I heard about the work of Professor Grant Schofield highlighting chemical imbalances in the brain and impact on mental health.
Grant is a Professor of Public Health at Auckland University of Technology and director of the university's Human Potential Centre (HPC). He started in psychology, went into sport and exercise psychology, then into public health, especially physical activity, then obesity.
We met at the HCANZA. (Health Coaches Australia & NZ Association) in the Gold Coast where he spoke of glutamate and lifestyle. In this episode, you will discover:

Welcome to the show! Are you struggling with chronic pain, headaches, or other neurological symptoms? It may be time to take a closer look at what you're eating. Recent research has shown that our diet can have a significant impact on the chemical messengers and neurotransmitters in our brain, which can lead to a variety of disorders and conditions Brain health is so important and there’s emerging information that what you eat can affect chemical messengers or neurotransmitters in the brain. If you’re a regular listener, today’s podcast is a follow-on from Prof Grant Schofield’s introduction to neurotransmitters that impact mental health. He recommended that I interview Dr. Kathleen Holton, a nutritional neuroscientist from Washington, USA. Dr. Holton's research focuses on the effects of dietary excitotoxins and certain micronutrients on the brain. In this episode, you'll learn about the association between food additives and chronic disease, signs that you may be sensitive to glutamate, and common foods that are high in glutamate.
Dr. Kathleen Holton’s research examines the negative effects of dietary excitotoxins on neurological symptoms, as well as the positive protective effects of certain micronutrients on the brain. The most common dietary excitotoxin exposures in the US are from food additives used as flavor enhancers and artificial sweeteners. Her research covers effects on all age groups, from brain development in neonates, to children with neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD, to adults and elderly with neurological symptoms. More importantly, what does a nutritional neuroscientist eat on a day-to-day basis? Dr. Holton shares what a day on her plate looks like and how kids can play their part in nourishing their bodies. Remember, what we eat is crucial to our overall health, and Dr. Holton will show you how to optimize your diet for optimal brain health. Stay tuned!
