27 Sep 2023What is Functional Nutrition and How Does it Help With Endo?00:41:26

Send us a text

Today's episode is jam-packed and it answers the question that I receive often of "Alyssa, what exactly do you DO?"

I got into the work that I do because it has been absolutely life changing for me. I tried so many things to help with my endo symptoms and felt like nothing was working.

Until I figured out a way to actually get to the root cause of my symptoms so that I could allow my body to heal. That is the same process that I use with my clients each and every day.

And the process I am here to share with you today!

In today's episode you will hear:

  • What functional nutrition actually is and how it can help you even when you feel like nothing else has.
  • How I determine the cause of digestive symptoms like bloating/endo belly, diarrhea, constipation, abdominal pain, and more.
  • How I identify the source of inflammation that can cause symptoms like pain, fatigue, and even infertility.
  • How I identify exactly what foods your unique body is sensitive to that may be contributing to those inflammatory symptoms.

...and more!

Enjoy!

11 Oct 2023What is Endometriosis Really?00:37:57

Send us a text

Let's face it, endometriosis is...well...complicated.

In simple terms, it is a disease where tissue similar to the endometrial lining in your uterus grows outside of your uterus. This causes symptoms like pain, fatigue, digestive distress, and so much more.

But those who suffer from endometriosis is so much more than that.

There are so many layers to endo. In this episode, we will unpack all of it.

We will dive into what endometriosis is, both from a western perspective and from a more holistic perspective.

We will also bust some common myths around endo.

This is a wonderful episode to listen to to gain an understanding from a deeper level and can also be a great episode to share with a friend or family member who just doesn't quite get what you're going through.

Enjoy!

21 Feb 2024Decode Your Menstrual Cycle: Unravelling Hormonal Shifts, Fertility Cues, and more00:27:16

Send us a text

In today’s episode I delve into the intricacies of the menstrual cycle.  It's something that often gets overlooked in our education, but understanding it can empower us with valuable insights into our bodies.

We're all familiar with the basics: a 28-day cycle, ovulation on day 14, followed by menstruation. But there's so much more to explore beyond these surface-level facts. To truly understand our bodies, we need to dig into what's happening during each phase of the cycle. It's about going beyond the calendar dates and getting to know the inner workings of our menstrual cycle.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-Understanding the four phases of the menstrual cycle: the follicular phase, ovulation, luteal phase, and menstruation; each phase has its own unique characteristics and functions within the cycle.

-How these phases are not isolated events, but rather intricately connected and dependent on each other; the actions and changes in one phase often set the stage for the next, creating a seamless flow throughout the cycle.

-When your body produces key hormones such as estrogen and progesterone during each phase, and understanding these hormone fluctuations can provide insight into physical and emotional changes experienced throughout the cycle.

-What you may feel during each phase of the menstrual cycle, from energy levels and mood swings to physical symptoms, and why recognizing these fluctuations can help you better manage your well-being throughout the month.

-The difference between the fertility awareness method and the rhythm method, and how you can track biological signs like basal body temperature and cervical mucus to determine fertile and infertile days.

This episode is packed full of information that you don’t want to miss! By delving into your menstrual cycle, you'll gain a deeper understanding of why you experience certain emotions and physical sensations throughout the month. This knowledge will empower you to navigate hormonal shifts with ease and grasp a clearer picture of what's happening inside your body.

-There are many different variations of endometriosis, and everyone experiences it differently.

06 Mar 2024The Role of Gut Health in Managing Endometriosis00:37:09

Send us a text

Today, I'm thrilled to dive into one of my favorite topics: gut health!  You might be thinking, how is this related to endometriosis? Well, gut health is crucial for both the progression and healing of endometriosis. Endo is not just a reproductive disease, but a full body disease.  Understanding and addressing your gut health is fundamental to tackling endometriosis effectively.

In today’s episode, you’ll hear:

-How endometriosis is rooted in immune dysfunction

-The gut-immune connection and how most of your immune system resides in your gut, influencing immune responses throughout your body, including in the context of endometriosis.

-How your gut can play a role in systemic inflammation in your body.

-How leaky gut contributes to food sensitivities and increased inflammation.

-Addressing food sensitivities through techniques like food sensitivity testing, adopting diets like Paleo AIP, and adding gut healing practices can help pinpoint triggers and alleviate symptoms.

-How gut infections like dysbiosis can trigger immune reactions and worsen endometriosis symptoms.

-Self-blame does not help you heal yourself; it is about feeling empowered to take steps to better health.

-How digestion impacts hormone imbalances, and ways to help your digestive system function better like chewing your food properly, drinking water, and daily movement.

I love talking about gut health, and focusing on it has truly transformed both my own health and that of my clients.  By improving your gut health, it can alleviate many endometriosis symptoms. Addressing one helps manage the other, as they are closely linked.  Understanding your gut empowers you to approach your health comprehensively. This is an episode you don’t want to miss!

13 Mar 2024Unlocking the Power of Functional Blood Chemistry for Endo00:29:36

Send us a text

In this week’s episode, I'm delving into an exciting addition to my nutrition practice: functional blood chemistry. Functional testing is a powerful tool for uncovering potential imbalances in the body, especially when it comes to understanding symptoms like those associated with endometriosis.

By combining functional blood chemistry with dietary interventions, I can pinpoint specific issues and tailor my approach to each client's needs. This testing provides a deeper understanding of the body's inner workings, and enables my clients to make more informed decisions about their health and well-being.

In this episode you’ll hear:

-What functional testing is vs conventional testing: at the doctor's office they typically use conventional testing, but functional testing offers a lot more data.

-Optimal ranges vs conventional ranges: optimal ranges give you a better idea of how much of a nutrient your body really needs to thrive, rather than to the bare minimum you need to survive.

-Functional approach vs conventional: with functional work, it's all about diving into the data and letting it guide our decisions; whereas, when you see a doctor, they're mainly focused on diagnosing your condition based on symptoms and tests.

-What you can learn from a functional test and how that applies to endometriosis.

-Functional blood tests give you a comprehensive view of your thyroid health, unlike typical doctor's tests that usually only cover two markers.

Functional blood chemistry is crucial for addressing endometriosis effectively. Join me for a free live webinar on Thursday, March 21st at 4pm PST, where I'll dive into the wealth of information it provides. Attending live ensures you'll get all your questions answered and maximize the benefits.

Additionally, I'll be introducing the Thrive with Endo Starter Package, a more accessible and affordable program. Applications open the same day as the webinar, but only for a few days. Check out the links below for more details!

20 Mar 2024The Hidden Costs of Birth Control w/ Crystal Felice00:44:10

Send us a text

In today’s episode  I'm thrilled to be joined by Crystal Felice, a former Pharmacist who's now a functional practitioner. Today, we're delving into a crucial topic: birth control. So many of us are introduced to the pill at a young age as a solution to our hormonal issues, and we aren’t told what it is actually doing to our bodies.  We both feel very passionate that we should be educated about the medication we use daily.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-Birth control isn't a hormone replacement—it's designed to prevent pregnancy by halting your regular cycle, and your period while on the pill is a pill-induced bleed, not a natural cycle.

-The difference between bioidentical hormones versus synthetic hormones, and how that affects your body.

-The side effects, like depleting your body of nutrients, and this can lead to other issues, such as depression and anxiety, often resulting in the need for additional medications.

-How birth control is often prescribed to address problems like acne or period pain, but it's more of a quick fix than a long-term solution; when you stop taking it, those issues tend to come right back.

-Ways to support your body when you are on and getting off birth control, and how quitting cold turkey is not the best way to go about it; you need to focus on supporting your detox pathways, nurturing your gut, and replenishing your nutrients.

-Women deserve to understand the effects of birth control before starting it, and informed consent is essential for the medications we take.

-It's important to include your partner in decisions about birth control; whether you're stopping or continuing, keep them informed about what's happening in your body.

Education about birth control is key for women to feel confident discussing their symptoms with their doctors and advocating for themselves.  Remember, there's no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to your health. It's all about informed consent!

27 Mar 2024Gut Health and Endometriosis w/ Lindsay Little00:50:08

Send us a text

Welcome back to the Endo Belly Girl Podcast! In today’s episode I talk with my dear friend, Lindsay Little, about my favorite topic: gut health.  Lindsay is a holistic nutritionist who helps women with embarrassing digestive issues. We're total nerds when it comes to gut health, and I thought it'd be super beneficial to bring Lindsay on board to get another expert perspective.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-The difference between what is common with digestion, and what is normal; just because it is common does not mean that it is normal.

-How a lot of the symptoms we experience start with the gut, and how our gut health affects every other system in the body.

-Bowel regularity and motility, and the differences between slow and fast motility.

-The root cause of bowel irregularity, such as dysbiosis and leaky gut, and how leaky gut occurs in the body.

-How the Standard American Diet, stress, and medications such as birth control contribute to the causes of dysbiosis, leaky gut, and how the gut microbiome behaves.

-Hormone production relies on nutrients like healthy fats, but diet culture often misleads us into cutting them out.

-You are on what you absorb, so if the body is not absorbing the needed nutrients, the body cannot function properly especially for hormone production.

-Eating healthy nutrient dense foods is necessary for blood sugar regulation, and regulating all the hormones in your body.

-How constipation can lead to an accumulation of excess estrogen, along with heavy metals and toxins, because the body struggles to eliminate them effectively.

-How the gut is the gatekeeper of hormones, and when there is damage to the gut it is unable to produce hormones and neurotransmitters that are necessary for your body.

-How good and bad bacteria in your gut help regulate estrogen levels.

Remember, you don't have to overwhelm yourself with information overload. Start small, keep it simple, and focus on building sustainable habits that'll last a lifetime. Healing isn't always a straight line, but every step forward is progress towards better health.

03 Apr 2024A Journey Through Infertility: Loss, Healing, and Hope00:54:04

Send us a text

Welcome back to the Endo Belly Girl Podcast! This month, in honor of National Infertility Awareness Week, we're diving deep into a series of discussions about infertility and our personal journeys with it. If this topic hits close to home and feels overwhelming for you, it's totally okay to take a breather and join us again in May when I'll be covering different topics.

For the first episode in this series, I wanted to open up about my own fertility journey. My hope is that sharing my story will offer you comfort, validation, and the understanding that this journey is ongoing and full of hope.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-I'm not perfect, and I'm still on this healing journey too; I've made progress and I'm not the same person I was when I began.

-My journey of when I stopped birth control to start a family, and the symptoms I experienced due to my endometriosis.

-My experience with IVF, including how it took a toll on me mentally and physically, and the lessons I took away from it.

-What I experienced after having a miscarriage, and realizing that I needed to take a step back and focus on my own health.

-The lessons I have learned along the way such as dealing with the grief I experienced from my failed embryo transfer and miscarriage, the body dysmorphia that I experienced after my miscarriage, and that boundaries and communication are important during this phase of my life.

-The profound gratitude I've developed for my body and the journey of learning to love and accept it for all its complexities.

And remember, if you're going through a similar journey and feel like you have no one to turn to, know that you're not alone. You don't have to be my client to reach out and connect. I'm here to offer support and lend an ear whenever you need it. Your listenership means the world to me, and I'm deeply grateful for the opportunity to connect and help in any way I can.

10 Apr 2024Navigating Mental Health With Infertility w/ Jessica Sorensen00:47:30

Send us a text

Today’s episode is the second of this month-long series about infertility awareness.   I'm thrilled to have Jessica Sorensen, a reproductive and perinatal therapist, joining us to delve into the mental health aspect of this journey. Jessica, having endometriosis herself, brings firsthand insight into what this journey entails. Both Jessica and I strongly believe in taking care of our whole selves through mind, body, and spirit.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-How infertility can be physically and emotionally taxing for women as they navigate challenges like grief, anxiety, depression, relationship strains, managing endometriosis, and questions of identity and self-worth.

-That it is so easy to overlook your mental health during this journey because you're always given the next steps immediately, leaving little time to process and grieve what you've been through.

-Reproductive trauma includes any distressing event related to infertility, pregnancy, birth, or postpartum experiences.

-When you're experiencing anxiety, brain fog, and other symptoms, remember to give yourself grace; your nervous system is processing the trauma you've endured.

-Ways to support yourself when dealing with these challenging experiences: seek professional help, join a support group, communicate openly with your medical team, set boundaries, and confide in trusted individuals.

-Grief is very personal and it isn’t linear, and you don’t need to just get over it; allow yourself the time and space to process and acknowledge your feelings.

-Your well-being as a table with four legs: stress, movement, sleep, and nutrition, and just like building a table, focus on one leg at a time to strengthen your overall health gradually; start with small steps and work your way up.

Remember, this journey is multifaceted. Whether you're in crisis or not, it's okay to seek support, whether it's for nutrition or mental health. Give yourself permission to process your experiences and know that there's a supportive community of women who understand what you're going through. You're not alone.

17 Apr 2024Navigating Fertility and Endometriosis with Acupuncture w/ Allison Locke00:40:34

Send us a text

In today’s episode, we continue our Infertility Awareness series by diving into the world of Traditional Chinese Medicine with Allison Locke, an Acupuncturist and integrative health practitioner.  Allison, who is also an endo warrior, offers valuable insights into how TCM can provide an alternative approach to addressing infertility and endometriosis.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine values balance and living in accordance with nature, and it is more than just putting needles in your body.

-How in TCM there is a very different diagnostic process; one illness can have different imbalances in the body like blood and qi stagnation, leading to different patterns that might show up as infertility.

-Acupuncture works wonders for relaxing the nervous system from a Western standpoint, but from a TCM lens, conditions like endometriosis often involve stagnation, poor circulation of qi and blood, and deficiency; TCM can pinpoint the root cause and tailor treatments accordingly.

-How in TCM, tackling infertility is all about focusing on healthy blood circulation, and whether you're aiming for a natural pregnancy or going through IVF or IUI, the approach remains consistent; research shows that combining IVF with TCM increases the chances of success by around 30%.

-The functional approach can be blended and used with TCM to help achieve the best quality of life.

-Acupuncture is not as scary as it sounds, it helps take your body out of the fight or flight mode, the needles are as thin as a strand of hair, it is a very safe practice, and it is a very relaxing experience.

If you are interested in TCM and acupuncture, but lacking access or seeking initial steps, focusing on foundational health pillars like diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep is a great starting place. The temperature of your food can affect how your body functions, and syncing sleep with natural light cycles, can positively impact overall health.  TCM encourages living in harmony with nature, so making lifestyle adjustments in line with this philosophy is a great way to begin integrating TCM into your daily routine.

24 Apr 2024Unveiling Hidden Fertility Barriers w/ Deidre Bloomquist00:47:48

Send us a text

This week is our final episode of the infertility awareness series. I am excited to talk with Deidre Bloomquist.  She is a functional nutritionist, and her specialty is reversing infertility through restoring health by reducing toxicity.  In today’s episode we dive into how toxicity impacts the body and fertility.

In today’s episode, you’ll hear:

-Endocrine disruptors like phthalates and fragrances impact hormones, which affects fertility.

-Toxins are everywhere, especially in products with fragrances, which are in many everyday products people use.

-Your gut health matters for fertility because it impacts your hormones, and when there are imbalances, like dysbiosis, it stresses out your body, which can impact your hormones too; toxins like pesticides, heavy metals, mold, and even emotional stressors can cause gut imbalances.

-In early conception, the thyroid is important in cellular replication, and if the thyroid is not functioning optimally it might cause fertility issues; heavy metals like aluminum and mercury, along with mold, can throw your thyroid off balance.

-A lot of times people think that their symptoms are completely normal, when it can be traced back to toxins that you were exposed to in utero; learning how to manage how many toxins you come into contact with will ultimately impact the health of your child.

-Unexplained infertility is definitely explainable, and what it really means is doctors don’t really know why you are unable to get pregnant; by digging deeper into the root causes of your symptoms, you are given a pathway to make the changes you need in order to get pregnant.

-When IUI or IVF doesn't work typically it's because the body doesn’t feel safe, and it is trying to keep you safe; doing functional work can help and prepare your body for those procedures or to get pregnant naturally.

To reduce toxicity and support fertility, start with your water source. Invest in a good quality filter. Look at things around your home and see what has fragrances, and buy things new in a better quality when you run out of that product.  Make changes slowly, and remember perfection is not the goal.  Prioritize daily use items for immediate improvement.

01 May 2024Demystifying the Endometriosis Diet00:40:42

Send us a text

Welcome back to the Endo Belly Girl Podcast!  In this week’s episode, I discuss “the endometriosis diet.” Contrary to popular belief, there isn't one specific diet to follow.  There is no one diet because everyone is bio-individual, meaning we all have different bodies and we do not process foods the exact same way.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-Why there isn’t a singular diet for endometriosis, and why there is so much confusion out there.

-The key is your unique bio-individuality, and what works for others might not work for you because our bodies are all different.

-Eat primarily whole foods, which are foods you find in nature like meat, fish, seafood, fruits, vegetables, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds if your body tolerates it.

-Focus on a nutrient-dense diet to ensure you're getting a wide range of nutrients like colorful vegetables, as each offers unique nutritional benefits; also prioritize omega-3s and protein, which are crucial for healing and overall well-being.

-Organic and grass feed and finished meat, pasture-raised eggs and poultry, and wild-caught fish and seafood are best for your body and the environment.

-Avoid vegetable oils like canola, corn, soybean, safflower, and sunflower oils, as well as sugar and processed foods; these can cause inflammation in the body, potentially aggravating endometriosis symptoms.

-Focus on fats like ghee, coconut oil, and avocado oil; olive oil works well for low heat or salads. For sweeteners, opt for lower glycemic options like maple syrup, fruit, coconut sugar, and honey.

-Bio-individuality means we're all unique, with different bodies and needs; it's not just about what you eat, but also about your cultural, religious, and personal beliefs.

-Identify problematic foods like dairy or gluten that might worsen your endometriosis symptoms due to inflammation. Consider trying a 30-day elimination diet like the PALEO AIP.

Trust your intuition to discover which foods suit you best and allow you to customize your diet to your needs, ultimately understanding your bio-individuality. Check out the guide below to create your personalized endometriosis diet.  It's a valuable resource for deciding what works best for you. Remember, eating should be enjoyable, not stressful or dreaded.

08 May 2024Mind, Body, Spirit: A Holistic Approach to Endometriosis00:41:14

Send us a text

In today’s episode, I delve into the holistic approach to the endometriosis healing journey. Endometriosis is a full-body disease, and healing endo goes beyond just our diet.  It is about healing the mind, body, and the spirit.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-Ways to heal the physical body are looking at your diet and nutrients, pelvic floor physical therapy, physical therapy, massage, acupuncture, and most importantly movement.

-Movement doesn’t have to be hard core exercise, it can be taking a walk; the intensity of your workout can vary depending on where you are in your cycle.

-Supporting your gut health and digestion, balancing your blood sugar, and getting nutrients in your body to help manage inflammation and to make your body perform optimally.

-Stress has huge impacts on the body and we tend to overlook how much it affects our daily life; stress impacts on our blood sugar and adrenals, nutrient levels, and immune system.

-Stress management is very important when it comes to healing endometriosis, and movement is one of the best ways to manage stress; meditation, journaling, and anything that makes you feel great like spending time in nature are also very beneficial.

-Mindset work is very beneficial; our thoughts and the things we say to ourselves really have an impact on our daily lives and the energies that we attract into our lives.

-Negativity bias is where our brains are programmed to see negativity first.  Great practices are to intentionally notice the positive in your day to day lives, practicing gratitude, and avoiding gossiping or speaking negatively about others because it will affect the way you feel.

-Be aware of everything that you are consuming such as books, TV, or even the news that affect your negativity.

-Connecting to something bigger than yourself is also great for your whole well being.

When embracing the body, mind, and spirit approach, it's all about finding what you need.  Remember, you don't have to tackle everything at once. Take it step by step and find what works best for you. Trust your intuition.  Figure out what works best for you, and follow your intuition.  I am launching the Endo Warrior Circle, a membership program making holistic support more accessible.  We will be talking about the holistic approach to healing your endo, and doors are opening in June!

15 May 2024The Truth About Supplements for Endometriosis w/ Kate Mahoney01:13:05

Send us a text

Welcome back to the Endo Belly Girl Podcast! Today I dive into understanding supplements with my friend and mentor Kate Mahoney, a functional practitioner dietary supplement expert.  Kate and I share a passion for bioindividuality, and educating people that not all supplements are created equally.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-Quality is crucial because many supplement nutrients originate from sources like corn, soy, and grains, and are often genetically modified. Since these ingredients can trigger sensitivities in most people, opting for higher-quality supplements is essential.

-Excipients, the inactive ingredients in supplements, can also contain ingredients we don't want in our bodies.

-The quality of Omega 3s and fatty acids hinges on their sourcing and processing. Exposure to heat, oxygen, and light can cause them to go rancid, worsening inflammation instead of reducing it. A simple test for high quality is if it tastes bad when you bite into it, it's likely not good quality.

-Supplements need to be bio-available for the body to absorb and use them.

-Supplements offer temporary relief for symptoms, like hormone imbalances, but often don't tackle the root cause. Consulting a functional practitioner for a personalized protocol is more beneficial than relying solely on advice from others, as it considers your unique bio-individuality and addresses the underlying issue.

-Therapeutic protocols are temporary and not lifelong solutions.

-When evaluating supplements, be wary of marketing claims that boast them as the best or number one. Look for detailed information on ingredient sourcing and ensure there's documentation to support it; transparency is key!

-If the ingredient list isn't clear, it's best to avoid buying the supplement. Check if excipient ingredients are listed, and if so, see if you recognize them.

Understanding supplement quality can be overwhelming, but these basics will help you make informed choices for your body. If you need further guidance, I offer one-off sessions to review your current supplements and determine what's beneficial for you.

22 May 202410 Simple Steps to a Healthier Gut00:31:55

Send us a text

In today’s episode, I dive into my favorite topic: gut health, focusing on foundational practices that often get overlooked. I have my top 10 tips on how to support your gut health.  While many of these tips may seem simple, I promise they are incredibly beneficial and can make a huge difference.

In today’s episode, you’ll hear:

-1. Stop eating on the go, when you eat while working or driving, your brain can't properly engage in the digestion process. Your body needs to be in a restful state to digest food effectively.

-2. Take a moment of gratitude when you begin your meal; before you begin your meal, sit down, take a few breaths, and be thankful for the food in front of you.  This allows your body to go into that rest to digest state.

-3. Prepare your own meals whenever possible; when you prepare your meals, it signals your brain that food is coming, preparing your body for digestion.

-4. Chew your food; chewing is the first step in breaking down food. It interacts with enzymes and signals your brain that digestion is starting. Your food needs to be a smoothie-like consistency before swallowing.

-5. Avoid drinking water during or around your meals, take small sips if needed; drinking water during meals can dilute your digestive juices and stomach acid, hindering food breakdown.

-6. Hydrate well the rest of the day; your body needs water to produce stomach acid and other digestive juices, and staying well-hydrated keeps your digestive system functioning smoothly.

-7. Eat bitter foods; bitter foods like black coffee, tea, unsweetened dark chocolate, and supplemental bitters stimulate gastric juices, aiding digestion.

-8. Eat ginger; ginger enhances digestive motility, improves efficiency, increases your digestive fire, and alleviates symptoms like bloating. It's a powerful aid for your digestive system.

-9. Eat prebiotic and probiotic-rich foods; prebiotic foods, like chicory root, feed good gut bacteria. Probiotic foods, like kombucha, contain beneficial bacteria cultures. Pay attention to how probiotic foods make you feel.

-10. Consider digestive enzymes; if you struggle with digestion, digestive enzymes from a health food stores can be helpful.  This is not the first option, but they are a good option for additional support.

My biggest advice is to know when you need deeper support.  This list provides a solid foundation, but if you face issues like leaky gut or dysbiosis, conside

29 May 2024Red Flags to Watch for in Endo Care00:32:01

Send us a text

This week’s episode dives into red flags to look for when choosing doctors or practitioners to help you through your endo journey. The journey is hard enough, and we need practitioners who are on our side 100%.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

1. Your goals are not aligning with their methods: if you want to focus on fertility, but they suggest birth control to manage your symptoms, it’s a sign they might not be the right fit.

2. You don’t feel comfortable or get a good vibe from them: Trust your gut. If you’re not comfortable with a provider, they’re likely not the right person to work with.

3. Feeling judged: They should recognize that it’s not about being perfect and that judgment is not beneficial to your journey.

4. Gaslighting: If you’re not being listened to and your pain and symptoms are brushed off, this is a major red flag. Your provider needs to validate what you’re experiencing.

5. Giving a pill for every ill: Consider if this approach aligns with your beliefs. Often, there’s a deeper root cause to address beyond just taking medication.

6. Feeling overwhelmed and unsure what you’re addressing: Endometriosis can be overwhelming, and if they suggest tackling everything at once, it can hinder your progress. A step-by-step approach is usually more effective.

7. Taking a radical approach before starting with the basics: You can’t skip foundational steps. Ensure that basics are addressed before moving on to more radical treatments.

8. Feeling like a number, not a human: If your provider doesn’t remember details about you or past discussions, it shows a lack of personal attention. They should know and understand you and your health goals.

9. Being given up on: If they treat you like a lost cause, find someone new immediately. Your provider should always believe in your potential for improvement.

10. Quick fix solutions: Your provider should be interested in understanding why you’re experiencing certain symptoms, not just offering quick fixes.

11. Getting a cookie-cutter protocol: Your needs, goals, and body are unique. You deserve a treatment plan tailored specifically to you, not a one-size-fits-all approach.

I’m not perfect and don’t have all the answers, but I wanted to share some insights based on experiences I’ve heard from clients, others, and even myself. It’s all about finding the right people for you and your goals and making you feel empowered. The endo journey

05 Jun 2024Exercise for Endometriosis w/ Amy Grace00:57:48

Send us a text

Welcome back to the Endo Belly Girl Podcast! Today, I am excited to dive into exercise for endometriosis with Amy Grace. Amy is a fitness trainer specializing in women’s fitness and a hormonal health coach. We also discuss Amy’s journey with endo and how she aims to empower women through their fitness journeys despite endo symptoms.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-Endometriosis doesn’t end your life; it’s about learning how to work with your body.

-Everyone’s starting point is very different. You might have to do some functional work to get to the point where you feel like you can reach a consistent fitness routine.

-Meet your body where it is right now. Understand your pain patterns, and menstrual cycles, and work towards feeling capable of having a fitness routine.

-Build foundational strength before you can get back to the old routines you had before your endo symptoms.

-Exercise varies with your cycle. Some days will be better, and your approach should align with your symptoms.

-Cycle syncing and symptom awareness are crucial. Knowing when to take it easy helps manage pain flare-ups, and helps you identify when to take it easy with movement.

-Identify movements that feel good. Understanding how different exercises affect your pain can help you stay active on bad days.

-Brainstorm a list of movements that you actually like to do, and then see what you feel from that movement will allow you to start exercising now.

-Start with small, light exercises to keep your routine manageable. This way, you won’t feel worse than when you started. Gradually build up your routine as your body allows.

When it comes to exercising with endo, it can be frustrating when your body can’t do what it used to, or you want to do more than you can. Start with movements that feel good and are fun so you’ll stick with them. You don’t have to do everything at once. Accepting your body as it is now is the best way to build confidence and exercise routines because, over time, you will only get stronger.

12 Jun 2024Endometriosis and Fatigue: What's the Deal?00:43:30

Send us a text

In today’s episode, I’m talking about a common symptom for us endo warriors: fatigue. Often, we don’t realize how tired we are until we start addressing other symptoms of endometriosis and experience more energy throughout the day. We don’t always recognize the signs of fatigue or understand why we have it. Today, I unpack some underlying imbalances and how to start managing them.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-Feeling tired at the end of a full day is normal. What’s not normal is feeling completely exhausted after working just a few hours or taking a walk.

-It’s normal to have slightly lower energy levels leading up to and during menstruation, and maybe even during ovulation. However, feeling exhausted daily and struggling to get out of bed is not normal.

-Good sleep hygiene is crucial for managing fatigue.

-Regular physical activity helps your body gauge when you need more energy and typically boosts your overall energy levels.

-Iron, B12, and folate levels significantly affect your energy. If your body is trending towards anemia, incorporate foods like red meat, dark leafy greens, brussels sprouts, broccoli, and use cast iron cookware.

-Inflammation contributes to fatigue, and there are many causes.

-An anti-inflammatory diet rich in whole foods helps manage inflammation. Common inflammatory foods include gluten, dairy, corn, soy, and sugar. A short-term elimination diet can help identify personal triggers.

-Blood sugar imbalances can also lead to inflammation.

-Stress contributes to inflammation, so learning how to reduce and manage your stress load is essential for combating fatigue.

-Factors like gut infections, thyroid health, slow liver function, and adrenal health can also contribute to fatigue. These more advanced symptoms are best addressed with the help of a practitioner.

The best way to start working on fatigue is by focusing on the basics: getting enough sleep, maintaining a healthy diet, managing stress, and incorporating regular movement. Think of these basics as the foundation of a house.  You need a strong foundation before anything else. Remember, supplements are meant to be supplemental. You can’t substitute a poor diet or lifestyle with supplements, and good health is about the small, consistent habits you build each day.

19 Jun 2024The Four Foundations of Endo Health00:22:27

Send us a text

This week’s episode is all about the four foundations of endo health. I’m super excited about the upcoming launch of the Endo Warrior Circle, a subscription-based program where everything is broken down into these four essential foundations. Today, I want to give you a sneak preview of the overarching topics we'll be covering, and help you figure out what you need to support right now.

In today’s episode, you’ll hear:

-The foundations are what you need to build a solid base to help you create a sustainable approach to managing endo. Focusing on one thing at a time will help you make progress with your endo symptoms and sustain that progress for the long term.

- 1.  Mindset and stress: Often overlooked, mindset and stress management are crucial. Believing that you can heal your body and improve your symptoms is the first step toward better health.

-2.  Diet:  an essential part to manage endo symptoms, and the best diet to focus on is an anti inflammatory diet.

-3.  Sleep: Prioritizing sleep and having good sleep habits are crucial when managing endo symptoms. Sleep impacts your diet, stress, and mindset.

-4.  Lifestyle: This includes movement, eating habits, creating space for healing, resting, and doing activities you love. A balanced lifestyle is key to managing endo and enhancing your overall quality of life.

-While supplements can be helpful, a quality diet is more important. Additionally, seeking help from mental health professionals, functional practitioners, acupuncture, pelvic floor therapy, and other resources can be extremely beneficial in supporting these foundations.

Making one positive change at a time creates a snowball effect, pushing your life in the direction you want. It’s tempting to change everything at once, especially when in pain, but sustainable progress comes from focusing on one foundation at a time.  When you focus on one, the rest will improve because each foundation relies on the other.  Doors are open from June 24th-28th. After that, you can join the waitlist. In the Endo Warrior Circle, we’ll dive deeper into these topics and more. I hope to see you there!

20 Nov 2024Top 6 Nutrients for Endometriosis00:30:11

Send us a text

Getting proper nutrition for endometriosis is a huge step in the healing process. But with all the misleading information out there, knowing what to eat and how to get all the nutrients you need can feel overwhelming. Eating for endometriosis isn’t about following one perfect diet that works for everyone. Instead, it’s about creating a diet that works best for your unique body as an Endo Warrior.

In today’s episode, I’m diving into the top six nutrients studies have shown to be effective for endometriosis. I’ll share what these nutrients do, how they support healing, and how to focus your diet around them to feel your best.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

-Busting myths about nutrition and endometriosis.

-The Top 6 Nutrients to focus on, including:

1. Antioxidants – What they are, how they reduce inflammation, and the best food sources.

2. Omega-3s – Their anti-inflammatory benefits, how they impact endometriosis, and where to find them in your diet.

3. Vitamin D – Why it’s essential, signs of deficiency, and how to safely get enough (without overdoing it!).

4. Magnesium – The connection between magnesium and pain relief, the best food sources, and deficiency signs.

5. Iron – Why it’s critical for energy and recovery, and the best dietary sources.

6. Zinc – How it supports immune function, wound healing, and hormonal balance, plus the signs of deficiency or excess.

I always recommend a food-first approach when it comes to getting your nutrients. Supplements can be helpful, but they’re meant to be just that—supplements. A nutrient-dense diet is the foundation for healing. 18 Dec 2024Top 8 Mistakes for Endo Nutrition00:21:16

Send us a text

In today’s episode, I dive into 8 common mistakes people make when managing endometriosis. You don’t know what you don’t know, and many of us think we’re doing our best when, in reality, some of our choices might not be serving us as well as we hope. I’ve made these mistakes myself, and today, I want to bring awareness to these pitfalls and share how to correct them.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

1. Doing an elimination diet that never ends — Why long-term elimination diets can do more harm than good and how to reintroduce foods mindfully.

2. Eating a lot of gluten-free products without checking ingredients — How gluten-free doesn’t always mean healthy and what to watch for on labels.

3. Eating carbs by themselves, even healthy carbs like fruit — The importance of pairing carbs with protein or healthy fats to stabilize blood sugar.

4. Worrying more about supplements than diet— Why a whole-food diet should be your foundation and how supplements can complement, not replace, good nutrition.

5. Believing that diet doesn’t make a difference for endometriosis — How nutrition impacts inflammation and hormone balance.

6. Believing that diet makes all the difference and is the only solution — Understanding the role of diet as part of a holistic approach to managing endometriosis.

7. Eating an overly restrictive diet — The mental and physical toll of restrictive eating and how to find balance.

8. Trying to pinpoint the one food causing all your symptoms — Why symptom management is about patterns, not perfection, and how to focus on the bigger picture.

These are 8 of the biggest nutrition mistakes when trying to manage endometriosis. It’s okay if you’ve been making some of them—awareness is the first step toward change. You don’t have to tackle everything at once. Start with one adjustment at a time, and over time, you’ll notice the difference.
