So enjoy learning from these smart entrepreneurs and hearing their stories! _______ In this episode, I am chatting with the founder and creative director of Studio Danu and student of the Modern Marketing Collective, Michelle McCarthy. Michelle has built her graphic design studio in Melbourne and has brought together over a decade of experience in Australia, America and Europe to create a truly admired business that specialises in strategic design and bespoke branding. We chat about Michelle’s first year of business, leaving her corporate job, and branching out on her own. Michelle shares the challenges, lessons and most importantly, the mindset change she adopted to grow her business and bring in more clients. 12 Aug 2019 | Let’s Audit Your Instagram Profile! | 00:11:56
It’s time to talk Instagram profiles and in today’s episode I’m here with you to help you audit your own! When someone searches for you on Instagram - or stumbles across you - they are going to quickly make up their mind whether or not they want to follow you. And one big factor that will help them make up their mind is what they see sitting in your Instagram bio. Your bio is a key part to get right if you want to attract your ideal audience and clients. It should quickly and clearly communicate to your audience what you are all about and why they should follow you (or not!). I am all about showing up on Instagram as people (not faceless companies) - and creating connections and relationships. Your Instagram bio can help you do this. So to make it super simple and actionable for you I have put together a checklist that you can use to audit your bio. Let’s get into it! Plus this October 25th to 27th I’m running a business retreat in the beautiful country Victorian town of Trentham. It’s an opportunity for you to spend a full weekend working ON your business and having me help you do it! The retreat is all about taking your business and your brand to the next level to help you create a stronger connection with your audience, a more premium experience and a more profitable business. Three deep dive workshops, a small group of amazing women in business, gourmet meals and two stunning venues including my amazing client Acre of Roses that we’ll be taking over for the weekend. 19 Aug 2019 | Behind the Business with Jess Worrall | 00:36:00
In today’s episode I’m speaking with the AMAZING Melbourne family and newborn photographer Jess Worrall.
When I went to launch this podcast, I asked the members of my private coaching group, The Modern Marketing Collective, who they would love to hear on the show. And I won’t lie - I was a little surprised! I expected them to mention some of the “big names” that we’ve all probably heard of. But instead, they said they really would love to hear from others just like them who are in the trenches building their business. People who are “in the making” rather than those who have “made it”. People BEFORE they get to millionaire status with 50 staff! So I thought, who better to bring on than one of my own students, the very talented (and all round legend) Jess Worrall who I personally consider as having “made it” 100 times over, but who I know has so much to share as she continues to grow her business. In this episode I speak with Jess about how she has evolved her business over the past two and a half years, how she went from being overwhelmed and overworked to now working less, significantly raising her prices and attracting her ideal clients who *have* to work with her. So I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I loved speaking with Jess! 26 Aug 2019 | How To Write Better Captions | 00:12:12
Don’t you think we can forget that the captions WE engage with should be the type of captions we write ourselves?!! We think “oh I don’t want to bore people” or that a clever little phrase is the way to go because that’s what we see some other brands do. Or because the Kardashians just post an emoji that doing that must be best practice for us too. No no no! Instead of stating and telling, discuss, ask, invite, ENGAGE. As business owners, our captions are there to create a deeper sense of connection with our audience AND to generate engagement. Captions are conversations. And the more engagement our content receives, the better it will rank with the Instagram algorithm, meaning the MORE of our audience Instagram will show it to and the higher the chance of it being shown on the Explore tab too, to help us be exposed to thousands more people. But know it might seem hard to come up with great captions so let’s look at some tips in today’s episode! MY DETAILS: Website | Instagram | Free Resources

02 Sep 2019 | Syncing your Business to your Cycle with Alisha Rose Kruger | 00:53:18
When I launched this podcast, there were a few women who I knew I really, really wanted to bring onto this show. Alisha Rose Kruger was one of them. Alisha opened my eyes to the way our bodies and hormones as women are really working - even when we aren’t aware of it. And she’s taught me how we can use this knowledge to thrive in life and business. So listen in as we discuss what our inner seasons are exactly (if you haven’t heard of these before - prepare for your mind to be blown just like mine was!) and how we can use them to our advantage to avoid burnout, fatigue, our inner critic and more. 09 Sep 2019 | Why I Wish I Had Niched Sooner - And My Advice To You | 00:15:14
I'm not someone who tends to dwell on the past but when I am asked what I would do differently if I had my time again starting my business, it doesn’t take me long to respond! As my business developed in its first few years, I was offering a range of services (basically whatever I was asked for!). Branding, website design, copywriting, brand strategy, event marketing, social media strategy, social media management… But as the months passed, I had a feeling in my gut and underlying anxiety as well. I was asking myself “What do I want to be known for?”. And being someone like I know that you are too, who wants to achieve and wants to do big things, I just knew that what I was doing wasn't going to help me get there. I needed to get more focused, but I was resisting the advice that I was being given over and over again: Go all in on Instagram. Focus on just Instagram. Niche, Emily! And did I take that advice? Of course not - that would have been way too easy ;) It took me FOUR YEARS until I actually took on this advice to niche, after many months of feeling very anxious, lost, stuck and having a feeling in my gut that I wasn't on purpose. Finally, about 12 months ago, I decided it was well and truly time to take this advice on board and focus on JUST Instagram. I tweaked my messaging, starting saying no to jobs outside of this and really focussed on delivering great content based around Instagram... Wind forward to now, and niching has been the BEST move for my business. So even though you might be scared you'll lose work, even though you want to work with everyone (just like I did!) and even though you don't feel like you are an "expert" enough to claim that space (like I SURE did!)... I encourage you to do that scary thing and go "all in" on what really lights you up and the area you know you can help people in the most. Because niching DOWN will GROW your business. In this episode I discuss my advice to you for how to find your niche and why it might be one of the best business moves you make. First up, register for my FREE Instagram Stories Challenge HERE to bring the FUN back to Instagram Stories and learn how to maximise them for your business! Sometimes we can overcomplicate marketing. We can become overly focussed on the things that don’t move the needle forward, trying to figure out hacks and tactics, rather than work on simple strategies, because they seem just that: too simple to possibly work We can get stuck on what are really the little things like hearing we should use 11 hashtags versus 30… add the hashtags in a comment not our caption… I heard I should post 2 a day… I want more followers then I’ll have more sales… or we say we hate the algorithm. But in this episode I’m sharing with you the three super simple ways that I leverage Instagram to grow my business that EVERY business owner can use too. What I focus on that works without any special tactics or hacks. And it’s why I don’t buy into the algorithm hating. Instagram is a FREE platform for our business - seriously how LUCKY are we?! 21 Oct 2019 | The Four Types of Content Every Business Needs | 00:22:32
It has really never been easier for us to share our message. In the good old days, we relied on advertising and working with publicists to actually get our messages out there and while they are still fantastic ways of reaching our ideal customers, we have the power to share our own messages directly and have conversations with our audience for free through social media. How lucky are we?! But despite this, it's actually not any easier to stand out and have cut through in the market and in some ways, it’s harder than ever to make an impact with our audience because there is so much noise out there. So how can we actually attract that attention from the right people, maintain that attention and turn it into results for our business? In this episode, we're looking at the four types of content for us to share on our social media PLUS some of the common content sharing mistakes business owners make. Let’s get into it! 29 Oct 2019 | Money Mindset with Clare Wood | 00:45:18
As hard as it might feel sometimes, in business we have to learn how to not only be comfortable with pricing, selling and money, but also in control of it. Depending on your personality type, you might dig your head in the sand and rely on other people to manage the finance side of things for you. You might keep your finances at arm’s length just hoping they are going ok, but feeling disempowered and like they are just something you don’t “get”. Or you might hold onto your money so tightly, scared that it will run out and therefore limiting the amount you invest in yourself and your business. With money comes so much baggage when it comes to our mindset, and today’s guest is someone who - just like me - is constantly working on her own relationship with money. Clare Wood is a business coach who has helped many women grow their service based businesses, through one-off sessions and ongoing coaching to help guide them to success. Clare has been able to TRIPLE her prices within a year through working smart, focusing on strategic marketing and investing in herself and her business. In this episode we are going to hear the common traps we are business owners fall into when it comes to our money mindset, along with practical solutions that will help us move past our money blocks and start earning more. Clare recently launched a podcast, The Clare Wood Podcast - and I am actually her guest on the show today! You can find Clare at clarewood.com.au, on Instagram at @clare_wood_coach and also make the most of her free business building resources at clarewood.com.au/free-stuff. 05 Nov 2019 | What I Learnt From Running A Business Retreat | 00:16:51
This episode is a little different to normal. I ran my first ever business retreat a couple of weeks ago now, and I recorded this episode with many thoughts and feelings very fresh in my mind. It’s more pondering in style than an episode that’s very structured. This is because I wanted to take the opportunity to speak out my thoughts, reflections and learnings and share these with you. So listen in to hear about where the idea came from, what I was most nervous about going into the event, how and why the workshops I designed and ran during the retreat were different to any I’d run before and what the outcome of the retreat was personally for me. 11 Nov 2019 | Behind the Business with Tanya Harrison | 00:33:55
Have you ever wondered what launching an online store involves? Been curious about what the first year in business can look like as an e-commerce entrepreneur? Or perhaps wanted to know what strategies work best when it comes to building an audience and making more sales? Well today’s guest will help answer those questions. As one of my students inside The Modern Marketing Collective, Tanya Harrison launched Raja Homewares, a beautiful online store that offers rattan furniture pieces for nurseries, in December 2018. In our conversation, Tanya shares what her expectation was when she “launched” her online store, versus what the reality looked like and what she wished she had done differently looking back. Tanya lets us in to her process of sourcing and even designing products, and how she has grown her Instagram to almost 13,000 followers within a year, with sales now coming in more consistently and frequently too, through strategies collaborations, giveaways and showcasing at events. 25 Nov 2019 | Scaling for Success with Tina Tower | 00:41:40
Meet Tina Tower: a woman who started her first business at age 20, grew it to a national franchise business, went on to sell it - after realising it actually wasn’t the business of her dreams. Tina is now is a business coach and she helps other women to package their expertise into online courses, speaking, content, podcasting and credibility. Now, with a small but mighty team, and more profitable business, Tina is an example of why bigger isn’t necessarily better (or happier!) and why "revenue is for vanity, profit is for sanity!". We explore how all of us can start scaling our businesses, including how to create systems - and why these are important, where to start when building our team, how to figure out what roles to fill and what tasks to keep to ourselves, plus the biggest lesson Tina has learnt in business so far. We recorded this episode on the launch day of Tina’s new (and first!) book, One Life: How to Have the Life of your Dreams. So head to tinatower.com to get your hands on it. 02 Dec 2019 | The Power Of Your Email List | 00:20:22
Email marketing is "dead". I don’t want to come across as “spammy”. No one reads their emails anymore... The negativity can be pretty big when it comes to email marketing. Maybe it’s because email doesn’t seem as fun or as easy as posting on social media, or because we don’t have that instant feedback from our audience, or because there is a sense of extra technology involved. But so many small business owners are nowhere near using email marketing as much as they could be to grow their business. At this point, you might be thinking, “Aren’t you all about Instagram, Emily?”. Well no. I don’t care about Instagram in and of itself. I care about what works for small business owners. Right now, that’s Instagram with a strategy, and email goes hand in hand with it. In this episode we discuss:

23 Dec 2019 | Grow your Profits with Melanie Miller | 00:43:45
I’m the first to admit that I used to avoid the numbers side of business. I could feel quite anxious about it. I mean I was always the humanities girl and never the maths student. Which of course, I now know, was just an excuse (I wonder if you have a few of those too?!). I avoided looking too much at my numbers and hoped, somehow, it would all work out. Until I realised I needed to get serious about my business if I wanted to meet my goals, which meant taking my finances seriously too. 07 Jan 2020 | Knowing Our Body to Better Our Business with Jema Lee | 00:50:31
Let’s start with some honesty here. How many things do you do at the EXPENSE of your health? What do you prioritise AHEAD of your health? How often do you find yourself saying, "I just need to get this done"... "this project finished"... "this quote out"... and THEN I’ll focus on my health, on getting fit, or eating well? What if instead, we understood more about how our bodies work? And what if our bodies could actually HELP us be better, achieve more and thrive more in our day to day and in our business? In today’s episode, I’m joined by Jema Lee of www.wellsome.com and @wellsome_jemalee on Instagram. Jema is a women’s cycle health educator whose work helps to reconnect women with their bodies and find their unique flow. In our discussion we cover:

13 Jan 2020 | Should You Create An Online Membership? | 00:24:15
Did you know that acquiring a new customer is anywhere from five to 25 times more expensive than retaining an existing one, according to the Harvard Business Review? And it makes sense: you don’t have to spend time and resources to constantly attract new clients: instead you get to focus on keeping your existing clients happy. So what would it look like if 97% of your clients paid you again next month? This is the business I have created with my online membership. About 18 months ago, I was only offering one to one services. I really had no idea or experience in the online business world. But I knew the way I was working wasn’t making me happy. I wanted to work with more people, but my time was capped out. I also wanted freedom to work when I wanted to, to work from where I wanted, and for most of my time to be spent teaching and supporting. And of course, I wanted to grow my revenue too without needing to put in more hours. Within a year, I grew my membership to a six figure income stream in my business, and have the freedom to work from where I want to, when I want to AND really love the work I do. In this episode we are going to look at if an online membership could be a great fit for you, and what questions you need to ask yourself to find out. We cover:
This episode is brought to you by my new online program, Scalable, where I’ll teach you how to map out, create, launch and sell your first online membership. Go to www.emilyosmond.com/scalable to enrol.
20 Jan 2020 | Choosing A Perfect Topic For Your Membership | 00:13:51
In last week’s episode, we explored why creating a profitable online membership is the most powerful way to scale your time, impact and income and create predictable, recurring profit each month. And I loved hearing your ideas for your own membership - from public relations, to French language, dog grooming, Pilates teachers and more. And today, we’re going to nail your membership topic. We’ll discover:
This episode is brought to you by my new program Scalable, where I’ll teach you how to plan, create and launch an online membership in six weeks - sharing what I learnt (and what I did wrong) taking my membership to a six figure revenue stream in my business. Scalable is now open for enrolment with a special launch-only price available only until February 2nd. 03 Feb 2020 | How To Boost Your Productivity & Beat Distractions | 00:18:19
Above anything else, time is often the number one challenge we face as business owners. Which is kind of ironic, because for so many of us, the very reason we started our business was to have more flexibility with our time, to be in control of our time, and ultimately have MORE time for the things we love. But in reality? We’re feeling stuck and pretty overwhelmed in trying to grow our business, and there just doesn’t seem enough time to get everything we want to do done. We can’t figure out what to focus on, we move between different projects and tasks, and by the end of the day, when we feel as though we have run out of time AGAIN, and been so busy, there realistically hasn’t been a whole lot of progress made with our business. So what do we do? How can we be more productive with our time? How can we cut out the distractions that are eating into the limited time we have? And how can we move faster - and more focussed - towards our goals? Well, that’s what this episode is all about! MY DETAILS: emilyosmond.com | @emilyosmond | Free Resources

There is a lot of confusion and mistruths about marketing out there! In fact, I was speaking at an event about Instagram just recently and one of the attendees put up her hand. She said that she feels overwhelmed by trying to keep on top of Instagram. So I asked her: “how often do you think you should be posting?" Her response? She said that just a few months ago at another Instagram training that was told she “must post on Instagram 3-5 times a DAY if she wants to succeed”. No wonder she was overwhelmed! So in today’s episode, let’s set the record straight about what you should be focusing on for your Instagram - and what advice you can forget as we cover the biggest trends and strategies for your Instagram marketing in 2020. 23 Mar 2020 | Navigating Covid-19 As Small Business Owners | 00:14:07
I recently saw someone write in a Facebook Group, “no one is going to be buying right now so I'm going to stop everything”. What that signals to me is her own mindset and her own belief rather than necessarily the reality. The fact that she is just going to stop all of her marketing, stop selling and close down her business because she believes that no one is going to buy from her right now. It is actually up to your customers whether they buy from you right now or not. Don’t make that decision for them and don't shortchange yourself by assuming that no one is going to buy from your business right now. I understand that day by day and almost hour by hour, there are measures being put in place by the federal, state and territory governments, which means that some businesses do need to close down. But if that's not you, then don't just decide you're going to stop serving and stop selling. I understand that perhaps you have a sense of guilt or shame around marketing and making offers and selling right now. Let me make a point here: you can profit through this and that's very different to profiting from this. And so just know that it's okay for you to keep making money right now. Even if other people are struggling, it's okay. And in fact, the economy needs us to keep marketing and to keep selling and to keep that money changing hands and to give our customers a reason to spend. In this episode I share some approaches that we can be using to navigate during this time. Join The Modern Marketing Collective and learn how to market your business online. 25 Mar 2020 | It's Time To Quit Waiting For Permission | 00:04:12
It’s time to quit waiting for permission. I know I’m guilty of looking around to check what others are doing before acting myself. Of holding back and waiting for others to go first to give me permission. Which can mean I sit on decisions spending so long trying to figure out what the right approach is based on others’ actions and opinions. And get stuck there swinging back and forth between options. But that’s not leadership. And not trusting myself. That’s not giving myself credit for my own unique beliefs, ideas and gut feelings. AND that’s assuming that others know the ‘right way’, when really there is none. There is no right way. “I spend an insane amount of time wondering if I’m doing it right. At some point I just remind myself that I’m doing my best. That is enough.” We need to tune into what we believe is the best approach. And take action even though we fear getting it wrong. Because the thing is, we will make mistakes. Some people aren’t going to like what we say or stand for or do. They will think it, they will say it, they will tell others, and they will tell us. But that’s the trade off standing up, taking action and being a leader. What decision do you need to make today? Give yourself permission to stop holding back, waiting and believing that others know best. You have the answers. Trust yourself, back yourself and commit to action.

30 Mar 2020 | Creating An International Bridal Brand with Anna Campbell | 00:50:15
Welcome back to the show. I hope you’re holding up ok. If you haven’t, I encourage you to go back and listen to Episode 38: Navigating Covid-19 as small business owners for some strategies and approaches that we can use to navigate this time. I’m also sharing some tips and resources on my Instagram feed and Stories so come over and follow me @emilyosmond and don’t hesitate to reach out via message if you’d like me cover any questions you have. Today I’m bringing you a conversation that was recorded a couple of months ago, with Australian designer Anna Thompson of Anna Campbell. You have no doubt, whether you’ve realised or not, seen Anna’s wedding dress designs on your Instagram feed, in magazines and worn by someone you know. Anna and I actually went to the same school, but in different years, but it wasn’t until a few years later that we first properly met. I had not long started my business, and I was consulting to a venue for their marketing. We wanted to increase the brand’s wedding bookings and so I contacted Anna’s team to pitch an idea: for Anna to photograph her latest collection at the venue, and be the guest of an ‘in conversation’ evening. To my delight she said yes, and I revelled in spending the day with this very down to earth, kind and humble soul. We’ve since reconnected and I knew Anna was someone who would bring so much insight to this show. Launching the Anna Campbell brand at the age of 19, as you’ll hear in this conversation, there have been many evolutions and twists and turns. Today, with world wide stockists, dozens of accolades to her name and media features, it’s the unwavering resilience that is truly at the essence of the Anna Campbell brand. I'm thrilled to have had the opportunity to sit down with Anna in her Brunswick headquarters, with her team working away around us, to talk about all things creating Anna Campbell. 02 Apr 2020 | Rethinking Comparison and Competition | 00:11:56
It’s true that other people’s success can sometimes bring out some not so positive feelings in us. I’ve certainly got stuck for far too long in anxiety and low self confidence after comparing myself to others. And even with the support of friends who remind us we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others, and that we are doing great, it can be hard to snap out of these feelings. BUT what if other people’s results didn’t impact how we feel about ourselves? And what if they actually helped us to achieve greater things too? In this episode we’ll explore how to rethink comparison and competition.

14 Apr 2020 | Business After Burnout with Angela Ceberano | 00:41:51
Today’s guest carved out her career by always being “on” and working relentless hours. But when a serious health condition forced her to slow down, what happened next? And what did this mean for how she went on to design her life and business? Angela Ceberano is the founder of public relations agency Flourish PR, with a team of more than 10 and clients across Australia in the entertainment, lifestyle, property and tech spaces. But after Ange was diagnosed with life threatening pneumonia in 2017, after 15 years of being ‘always on’, she realised something had to give and set out to find a hobby that would force her to switch off and have some quality, 'me' time away from the office and away from her phone. It was here that she discovered her love of horse riding, which led her to her horse, 'Marco', who she credits for saving her soul. The experience inspired Angela to bring to life the first ever Australian made luxury equestrian-inspired candle range, Marco & Co. by Angela Ceberano. Now, she runs two successful businesses and is learning to master the idea of balance, living life after burnout. Let’s welcome Angela Ceberano to the show!
14 Apr 2020 | Five Steps To Test A New Business Idea And Make Sales Fast | 00:10:57
Right now, you might be wondering how you can adapt your business to thrive during the current Covid-19 pandemic. You may be mapping out ideas and making plans. But I want to show you how to start making sales sooner by validating your idea, and why selling before you create is the answer to success. In my online marketing coaching group The Modern Marketing Collective, many of our members are pivoting and creating new approaches to their business. Some are going from in person service offerings like photography and videography to offering online DIY consultations, retail owners are creating online stores and selling online for the first time, and others creating online programs to share their expertise in more scalable and far-reaching ways. So I put together a bonus Business Starter Toolkit for them, to help those brand new in business to get started sooner, and others who are pivoting to enjoy more success quicker. One of the lessons I’ve developed for my students is how to validate their offer - and I want to share some of the key takeaways with you in this episode. By the way if you want to turn your online marketing into a sales system for your business and get to your biggest months in revenue using strategic content and tactics that actually work, go to emilyosmond.com/free to register for my free online training. And if you want to learn how to turn your knowledge into an online program, create recurring revenue each month, and work from where you want, when you want, message me on Instagram @emilyosmond with “scalable” and I’ll ask you some specific questions to work out if my high level program, Scalable, is the right fit for you.

20 Apr 2020 | 5 Ways To Balance Social Media and Mental Health | 00:13:45
There’s no denying the power of social media as a small business owner. We all know it’s extremely powerful to build your brand, connect with existing and potential customers, and generate sales. If we look at Instagram in particular, after first discovering a brand 79% of people searched for more information, 65% of people visited that brand's website or app and 46% purchased from that brand online or offline. However, studies also link Instagram to anxiety and depression and even if it has been more minor in its effects, many of us have felt some not so positive feelings from our social media habits. So how can we as business owners, for whom social media is a crucial business tool, balance its use with our own mental health? As someone who is prone to feelings of anxiety and who has suffered from depression, I’ve learnt my own ways to protect myself and make social media use a more positive and productive experience - and today I want to share five of those with you. I hear you. When Covid-19 started impacting life here in Australia, with restrictions put in place and businesses closing their doors, I too was wary and worried that sales in mine and my friends’ business might stop. Yet if I looked at my own behaviour, I, albeit more cautiously, was still spending money on services and products for my business and life. 05 May 2020 | Four Tips For Starting Your Social Media Before You Launch Your Business | 00:11:56
At what point should you start your social media when you're launching a new business? Should you start posting before you officially launch? And if so what on earth should you be sharing? Something that trips many small business owners up is how their social media relates to the launch of their business. I often get asked if they should start posting to their platforms before their products or services are ready to start selling. And many tell me they aren’t ready to start their social media yet because they haven’t launched their business. The truth is, you can’t afford to not start your social media before you launch your business. The issue is that some small business owners equate the moment their website is finished and goes live into the world as the moment their business launches, and they expect an influx of enquiries and orders. But the trap they fall into is not building an audience that cares about what they have to offer first. Tune in to learn four ways to use your social media in the lead up to your business launch.

Just recently, my fiancé Koden joined me to be interviewed on a podcast called The Love Club, which is hosted by Kate Robinson. As a student inside both of my programs, Kate learnt how to book out her wedding photography services through The Modern Marketing Collective and now as a student inside my high level program Scalable, Kate is scaling her business with her online program, The Love Club, which is the go-to place for couples to supercharge their relationship and become incredible partners, for life. Kate asked Koden and myself onto her podcast to discuss our relationship along with what it’s like with one of us being more in the public realm (me!) than the other (Koden - who doesn’t have Instagram). She called the episode “How opposite personalities and driven and independent spirits work together”... which sums us and our relationship up well! We had lots of fun chatting with Kate and as Koden’s podcast debut, I think he did pretty well! If you like hearing from both of us, let me know in a review and I’ll bring Koden back onto the show for another session! 26 May 2020 | Emma Seibold on building Barre Body, dealing with competitors and innovating online | 00:42:54
If you are either looking to create an online program or you have an online program that you now want to grow, my upcoming live workshop is perfect for you. You’ll learn the exact process I’ve used to create, launch and scale my online program to become a multiple six figure revenue stream in my business - starting with a tiny email list and without constantly launching. Go to emilyosmond.com/scale to choose a time and join me for the free online workshop. Today’s guest is one of the “OG’s” in her industry. And if like me until recently, you don’t know what that means, let me save you Googling “what does OG mean”. It stands for “original” - and in this case I’m talking about being the first on the market when it comes to the exercise form of barre, here in Australia.
As founder of both Barre Body and Bende, Emma Seibold is something of a force of nature. With the first Barre Body studio opening in Melbourne in February 2012, the business has grown to eight studios across Australia as well as a very popular online studio, Barre Body Online, with hundreds of on-demand workouts. So how exactly did Emma make this happen, which marketing strategies have paid off both in the earlier days and now, what was the combination of events that almost brought things crashing down, how has Emma dealt with more competitors coming to the marketplace, what advice does she have for other studio owners and small businesses and how has Covid-19 impacted her business? We discuss all this and more in this jam-packed episode. 05 Jun 2020 | Black Lives Matter | 00:05:26
I am recording this episode in light of George Floyd's murder and the ensuing much-needed and long overdue rise of conversations about racism. I acknowledge my failure and I recognise that in my lack of action to be anti-racist, and my ignorance, I've been complicit. I am sorry. I believe that if we want to build our platforms, and in doing so be leaders, we don’t get to choose to sit out when it doesn’t suit us. We can’t have it both ways. And by staying silent, whether it's because we are worried about saying the wrong thing, believe it has nothing to do with us or don’t want to offend people who don’t agree, we are propping up the systematic injustice that prevails. In the words of Desmond Tutu - "if you are neutral in situations of injustice, you are choosing the side of the oppressor". I know I have a lifetime of learning ahead and that this learning is urgent. Here are some people and resources that are already teaching me a lot:
I commit to making my business safe for all people and to practicing true allyship; to doing the work, listening to and amplifying the voices of Black people, donating, calling out inaction and injustice, and educating myself to make this a reality. I welcome conversation and correction. With humility, Emily
11 Jun 2020 | Course or membership - which should you create? | 00:14:13
If you’re thinking about creating an online program, one of the key decisions to make is what format you’ll choose. The two most common options are a course or an online membership. Let’s explore what the key differences are between the two and which once could be the best fit for you. This episode is brought to you by Scalable - my online program where I teach you how to start and scale your online program, for revenue every month without relying on launching. I teach everything I’ve learnt in growing my membership program over the past (almost!) two years to create a multiple six figure revenue stream in my business. To find out if your idea could work for an online program that can scale, send me a message on Instagram @emilyosmond and mention ‘Scalable’.
11 Jun 2020 | How to price your online program | 00:17:15
Something that can trip a lot of people up and hold them back from getting started with creating and launching their online course or membership is how to price it. In today’s episode, let’s explore how to come up with a price for your program - and why I say at the end of the day you just need to pick a number and go for it! This episode is brought to you by Scalable - my online program where I teach you how to start and scale your online program, for revenue every month without relying on launching. I teach everything I’ve learnt in growing my membership program over the past (almost!) two years to create a multiple six figure revenue stream in my business. 30 Jun 2020 | Denise Duffield Thomas on being a chilled Millionaire | 00:30:39
Denise Duffield-Thomas describes herself as a lazy introvert and an unbusy mother of 3. She is also a millionaire. You may have heard of Denise before. She is a money mentor for the new wave of online entrepreneurs who want to make money and change the world. She specifically helps women charge premium prices, release the fear of money and create First Class lives. Earlier this year, I joined Denise and six other women at Denise’s business retreat on her rose farm in NSW, because I believe that you need to invest in opportunities to learn from the people who’ve already achieved what you are aiming for. So it was a delight to catch up with Denise to record this episode and discuss what being a ‘chillpreneur’ actually looks like, how her business makes money, and how much each year, plus the actual breakdowns between revenue streams, her advice for others to overcome money challenges and sabotages and what she considers to be the key ingredients to being a chilled millionaire. 07 Jul 2020 | Raw and Real with Lisa Messenger | 00:55:52
Lisa Messenger is the vibrant, game-changing founder and CEO of Collective Hub, an international speaker, best-selling author, and an authority on disruption. She launched Collective Hub as a print magazine in 2013, with no experience in an industry that people said was either dead or dying. Within 18 months that print mag was in 37 countries. Five years and 54 issues into the print magazine Lisa made the courageous move to “break” the very thing that she started, enabling her to iterate and pivot into something far more sustainable and vast reaching. Collective Hub has since grown into an international multimedia business and lifestyle platform with multiple verticals across print, digital, events and education – all of which serve to ignite human potential. Lisa has also authored and co-authored 28 books, including in more recent years, the real-time, raw and candid documentation of her life and business as it unfolded. Lisa’s books and magazines were pivotal to me in realising there was a thing called ‘entrepreneurship’, and that you didn’t have to have it all figured out to start. We speak about Lisa being unable to scale in the first iteration of her business, the incredible growth of Collective Hub and what she puts down to its success, what it felt like when she realised it was time to let go of her staff, big office and the print magazine to make sure Collective Hub survived, her ego, mental health, and what she wants to be remembered for when she’s gone. Collectivehub.com is the best place to go to find Lisa’s books and masterclasses, you’ll find Lisa on Instagram @lisamessenger, and search “Hear me Raw” (RAW) on your favourite podcast app to subscribe to Lisa’s new podcast. 14 Jul 2020 | Your small business accounting questions answered with Xero | 00:42:08
I’ve been having lots of discussions with my community recently about investing in accounting software, and whether it’s an expense they can afford. This often comes after they share the all too familiar stories about staying up to the early hours to sort out their books and not really knowing how profitable their business actually is. After regularly spruiking the tool that I’ve used from day one in business, I knew I wanted to ask someone from the company to come onto the podcast and do the talking. Xero is small business accounting software born out of New Zealand in 2006, now with 2 million users across 180 countries. It allows us to be on top of our numbers at any given time, helping to inform our business decisions, saving us time and stress, and ultimately thrive. Joining me on this episode is Angus Capel, the Small Business Advocate at Xero. We chat about how freelancers, brick and mortar stores, ecommerce businesses and more can leverage accounting software to excel in their businesses, the biggest trends and opportunities he is seeing across the board right now, and his top accounting tips for small business owners. Did you love this episode? Take a screenshot and tag us on Instagram @emilyosmond and @xero. We’d love to see!

28 Jul 2020 | Becoming a six figure artist with Cass Deller | 00:49:22
I’m so excited for you to meet my friend and a total inspiration, Cass Deller in today’s episode. Cass is watercolour and hand lettering artist, designer, mother and business owner of Cass Deller Design. Her work has been featured in magazines such as Real Living Magazine and Home Beautiful and she has worked with brands including Provincial Home Living and Pillow Talk. I met Cass a few years ago at a business retreat organised by a mutual friend of ours. And I fell in love with her beautiful grounded, kind, positive energy. I have loved seeing Cass innovate, experiment, and develop her business, launching The Cass Deller Print Collection where she offers one off prints that brands can buy and use right away; creating the most incredible large scale murals, and continuing to show up and share her designs and snippets of her life. When Cass and I spoke about doing this episode, I asked if she would be comfortable talking about the money side of her business. She agreed and shared with me how she really cares about challenging the ‘starving artist’ mentality, and instead show that you can be an artist, with kids, work part time hours, have a healthy happy life and earn well too. In this episode we discuss how Cass has become a six figure artist, how she works out pricing, scaling up and down her business around her life, what marketing has worked best for her business, her experiences with hiring and so much more. Also - this episode comes out just before Cass launches her very first art collection - so go over to @cassdellerdesign on Instagram to show Cass some love and explore her beautiful designs.

30 Jul 2020 | Exactly how much I’ve invested in professional development | 00:30:23
Someone recently asked me what I’ve invested in for my professional development. Being a fairly open book when it comes to sharing what I’ve done in my business, I thought I’d step you through each year to date of my business in terms of the types of programs I’ve taken and how much I’ve actually invested in my professional development. For me, professional development is one of my favourite things to invest in. It’s the opportunity to learn, open my mind to new ideas and strategies, often connect with new people, and the return often comes back to me personally and professionally over the months and years ahead. Next week, I’m going to share what my first year in business looked like, so stay tuned for that episode. Now let’s get into what I’ve invested in for my professional development since starting my business in 2015.

11 Aug 2020 | Refugee camp to international speaker with Pauline Nguyen | 00:47:54
Pauline Nguyen’s story is that of survival first. Escaping war-torn Vietnam as a toddler, Pauline eventually made it to Australian shores after a year in a Thai refugee camp. She went on to suffer tremendous physical and emotional abuse until she was a young woman. It’s this adversity that Pauline now refers to as her ‘training’ to have since become one of Australia’s most sought after development coaches, a leading entrepreneur, an award-winning author and an international keynote speaker. She is also the co-founder of the world’s most awarded Vietnamese restaurant, Red Lantern. Described by Huffington Post as, “The most grounded spiritual entrepreneur on the planet”, I caught up with Pauline to discuss her latest book, ‘The Way of the Spiritual Entrepreneur: The 7 Secrets to Becoming Fearless, Stress Free and Unshakable in Business and in Life’. We discussed the unconventional strategies that saw her restaurant survive the Global Financial Crisis (this can teach us all a lot); how she is helping her clients’ businesses - and her own - navigate Covid 19; what being a spiritual entrepreneur really means - and why it’s not what we think; plus why you should be making money; why work-life balance is BS; and what she wish she could go back in time and tell herself as a seven year old working in her parent’s businesses… this made us both tear up. Find Pauline’s books online or in bookstores and find out more about working with Pauline at paulinenguyen.com.au. I learnt a lot from this conversation and I’m sure you will too. 12 Aug 2020 | Don't Price Based On Your Worth | 00:11:15
Have you heard the saying that you should charge what you are worth? I disagree. Your pricing does not reflect your worth as a person. And just because someone else has lower or higher prices than you, does not mean they are worth any more or any less. Pricing is one of the questions I’m asked the most from my students - and it can really get us stumped. And many of us are chronic underchargers! Here’s a small part of a recent Money & Pricing Masterclass I ran for my students inside The Modern Marketing Collective. If you’re ready to learn how to market yourself business in a way that actually makes you more money, send me a message on Instagram @emilyosmond and mention “the Collective”.

She worked in her husband’s business - where she grew it to a successful multi-location business thanks to her love and skills in marketing. 01 Sep 2020 | The new rules of influencer marketing: what you need to know with Karan White | 00:40:45
My free Instagram Stories Challenge starts TODAY - quick register here! Influencer marketing is BOOMING! In fact, it is one of the marketing channels that did not experience a significant decline in activity even during this COVID-19 shutdown period when marketing spend in many channels experienced sharp reductions, according to the World Federation of Advertisers. But this booming industry of influencer marketing brings with it a lot of questions. How can we make sure that we see a return in our business when we are working with influencers? What legal considerations do we need to consider? How do we know which influencers our business should work with? And what if we are an influencer - or interesting in exploring this very viable business model - what do we need to know? In today’s episode I’m speaking with Karan White - Agency Director of The Lime Agency, Owner of Pod Legal, and Co-Deputy Chair of the Australian Influencer Marketing Council. Yep - she is one smart woman! In July this year, the Australian Influencer Marketing Council (AIMCO) released the industry’s first set of working practices to support brands, agencies and creators.
As someone with years of experience working in all aspects of influencer strategy, Karan breaks down:
AIMCO The Lime Agency

10 Sep 2020 | Could you halve your offers to double your sales? | 00:09:16
Psst - did you see?! My podcast producer Brianna snuck in a 15% off offer for her DIY Podcourse for you! Just go to www.bambymedia.com/podcasting-course and enter “emily-yay” at checkout to claim your savings!
Over the past couple of years, I have more than halved what I offer in my business, with the result being that my revenue doubles each time. Not necessarily instantly, but within the year. It’s not comfortable to offer less. We resist it and struggle to maintain it. And it logically doesn’t make sense. Wouldn't offering MORE to our audience, mean we would sell more? And in turn offering less, limit how much we can earn? Tune in to hear why this isn’t always the case! 24 Sep 2020 | The weird beliefs that can hold us back | 00:08:41
So much of business success can boil down to our mindset. Two people could know and intellectually understand the same strategies, but what can hold one back from achieving while the other thrives? From my experience in my own business and working with hundreds of clients is that it can often come back to beliefs we are holding on to that aren’t true and don’t serve us. In his episode, we’ll be tapping into what this looks like, exploring how to identify them and some of the weird beliefs that have held me back. 01 Oct 2020 | Scheduling 30 days of content is not a marketing strategy | 00:09:54
Ask a business owner what their one wish would be if they had a magic wand for their marketing, and many would say “to have a month of content scheduled”. There is the constant guilt of not posting enough, like a burden hanging over you. So “success” can sound like finally having 30 days of posts automatically going out on your social media. And that’s what you hear from all different people: “Post more content!” and “You have to post every day!” or even “You have to post 3 times a day!” Let’s say, you did it and you got your 30 days of content scheduled. The month comes to an end, but instead of celebration, you realise nothing in you business has changed, apart from being able to tick the box of posting every day. If this is you, how is this strategy currently actually working for you? What is the return you are seeing for your business? As business owners, time and focus are two resources we need to protect. I want you to get very clear about how you are currently spending yours and why. Here’s why treating scheduling 30 days of content like a marketing strategy just doesn’t make sense. If this episode resonated with you, you are going to love my BRAND NEW free training that is going to break down for you the system I have taught to hundreds of students to guide you in going full time in your business the right way so you can avoid the uncertainty, and be strategic in everything you do with your time with laser focus on your goals. Kim’s (very common!) resistance to showing herself in her marketing, how she overcame it, and the huge difference this has made for her business 5.
