In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. Melanie Cree—physician-scientist, pediatric endocrinologist, and one of the leading researchers redefining how we understand and treat Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS). PCOS affects millions of women, yet it's still underdiagnosed, misunderstood, and often mistreated. • The misunderstood role of testosterone, insulin, and SHBG in diagnosis
  • What muscle biopsies reveal about teenage girls with PCOS
  • Intramuscular fat, mitochondrial impairment, and the true cost of sedentary muscle
  • How early lifestyle and exercise interventions could change the future of PCOS care
  • What GLP-1 agonists and amino acid supplements might offer for treatment

Whether you’re a clinician, patient, or advocate for women’s health, this episode will give you a whole new lens on PCOS—and why skeletal muscle may be the most overlooked (and powerful) organ in the conversation.

31 Jan 2023Can Women’s Health Get Better With Age? | Stacy Sims PhD01:07:52

STACY T. SIMS, MSC, PhD, is a forward-thinking international exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist who aims to revolutionize exercise nutrition and performance for women. She has directed research programs at Stanford, AUT University, and the University of Waikato, focusing on female athlete health and performance and pushing the dogma to improve research on all women. During her tenure at Stanford, she had the opportunity to translate earlier research into consumer products and a science-based layperson's book (ROAR) written to explain sex differences in training and nutrition across the lifespan. Both the consumer products and the book challenged the existing dogma for women in exercise, nutrition, and health. This paradigm shift is the focus of her famous "Women Are Not Small Men” TEDx talk.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Training methods for every-day women, not athletes.
  • Should women be taking exogenous hormones?
  • How to maintain fitness during menopause.
  • Can your health get better with age?

Based on a feasibility study in humans, his lab is currently carrying out a smartphone-based study to assess the extent of circadian disruption among adults. Dr. Panda has received the Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research, Dana Foundation Award in Brain and Immune System Imaging, and was a Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences.

24 Sep 2024The Double Standard in Sexual Health | Cindy Eckert01:26:07

Innovating Women’s Health

In this episode of The Dr. Gabrielle Lyon Show, I sit down with the incredible Cindy Eckert—serial entrepreneur, founder of Sprout Pharmaceuticals, and the driving force behind Addyi (commonly known as “the female Viagra”). Cindy shares her groundbreaking journey in advocating for women’s sexual health, challenging the medical system, and fighting for equal treatment in medicine.

Cindy reveals the startling double standards between male and female sexual health, recounting her experiences bringing Addyi to market and navigating the resistance she faced. Together, we dive deep into why women’s pleasure, health, and biology have been historically overlooked and undervalued, and why now more than ever, the conversation must change.

Key highlights:

  • Why women deserve proof and evidence-based treatments
  • The untold challenges behind bringing Addyi (the female Viagra) to market
  • How we can change the conversation around women’s health

If you want to learn more about the untold truths of women’s health and why this conversation is so critical, hit play and join us for this powerful discussion.

Who is Cindy Eckert?

Cindy Eckert is a self-made serial entrepreneur and fierce advocate for women, known for her bold leadership and mission to empower female entrepreneurs through her Pinkubator. Over her 24-year career in healthcare, Cindy has built and sold two companies for over $1.5 billion, including Sprout Pharmaceuticals, which introduced the first FDA-approved drug for low sexual desire in women, often called "female Viagra." After selling Sprout for $1 billion, she fought to reclaim the drug and relaunched it on her own terms. Cindy’s work, widely featured in major media, focuses on creating mission-driven companies with a profound impact, and she is committed to helping others achieve success.

What is ADDYI?

ADDYI is for premenopausal women with acquired, generalized hypoactive (low) sexual desire disorder who have not had problems with low sexual desire in the past, and who have low sexual desire no matter the type of sexual activity, the situation or the sexual partner. The low sexual desire is troubling to them and is not due to a medical or mental health problem, problems in the relationship or medicine or other drug use. ADDYI is not for use in men or to enhance sexual performance.

Your risk of severe low blood pressure and fainting is increased if you drink 1-2 standard alcoholic drinks close in time to your ADDYI dose. Wait at least 2 hours after drinking before taking ADDYI at bedtime. Your risk of severe low blood pressure and fainting is also increased if you take certain prescription, over the counter or herbal medications, or have liver problems. Low blood pressure and fainting can happen when you take ADDYI even if you don’t drink alcohol or take other medicines. Do not take if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in ADDYI. Allergic reactions may include hives, itching or trouble breathing. Sleepiness, sometimes serious, can occur. Common side effects include dizziness, nausea, tiredness, difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep and dry mouth. See full PI and Medication Guide, including Boxed Warning at addyi.com/pi or call 844-PINK-PILL.

01 Oct 2024How Blood Flow Restriction Changes Exercise Science | Dr. Jeremy Loenneke02:02:31

Can you Build Muscle without Heavy Lifting?

Join Dr. Gabrielle Lyon as she sits down with Dr. Jeremy Loenneke, an associate professor of exercise science at the University of Mississippi and one of the world’s leading experts in blood flow restriction (BFR) training. They discuss the science behind skeletal muscle adaptation, how BFR can help you get stronger without heavy weights, and why muscle growth and strength aren’t always the same thing.

Dr. Loenneke shares insights on how BFR works—using low loads to trigger muscle adaptation and growth—and the potential benefits for recovery, rehabilitation, and even everyday training for those wanting to avoid joint strain. They also explore some fascinating phenomena like cross-education, where training one side of your body can strengthen the other side.

Key Highlights:

  • The basics and benefits of blood flow restriction training
  • How to build muscle with low weight loads
  • The difference between muscle growth and muscle strength
  • Practical applications of BFR in both sports and rehabilitation

Don’t miss out on these expert insights that can transform your approach to exercise and recovery. Let’s take your fitness knowledge to the next level!

15 Nov 2022Train Less and Gain Muscle Faster | Samuel Buckner PhD01:28:24

Samuel Buckner, PhD, is an assistant professor of exercise science at the University of South Florida. Dr. Buckner is director of the University of South Florida Muscle Laboratory. His research group’s primary focus is on skeletal muscle adaptations to resistance exercise. Specifically, the USF Muscle Laboratory is interested in the influence that exercise-induced increases in muscle size have on exercise-induced increases in muscle strength. In addition, the lab studies low-load alternatives to traditional resistance exercise (with and without the application of blood flow restriction), and the applications these methods may have on various populations. Dr. Buckner has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How to reduce the amount of time you spend in the gym
  • Is it harder to grow muscle the more you train?
