27 Nov 2022Episode 48: Dr. Paul Wood01:08:52

Dr Paul Wood is a motivational speaker and author. The 45-year-old is also a husband and father of two boys.

The life he lives is a far cry from his late teens and entire twenties- when Paul was 18, he convicted of murder and served 11 years in prison.

Some of you will make your mind up about Paul without even listening to this episode. He knows this and understands your 'why.'

For those of you who listen with an open mind, there are so many lessons we can all get from Paul’s very long road to redemption.

It was in jail that Paul Wood decided to use the time wisely by studying. He became the first person in New Zealand's history to progress through undergraduate and master’s degrees while in prison. He was also the first person to begin a doctorate while incarcerated.

Really hope you like this one.

Thanks, Dom

04 Dec 2022Episode 49: Kendra Cocksedge01:12:01

Kendra Cocksedge was part of the Black Ferns team who just recently won the Rugby World cup in front of a packed Eden Park crowd.

That final was her very last game after 15 years in the team.

That win put the bow on what has been a mindblowing career:

15 years in the NZ Black Ferns.

2015 world player of the year.

And in 2018 the first woman to ever win the Player of the Year at the NZ rugby awards.

When I caught up with Kendra I offered her transport to my place. She declined and said she could make her own way there….then she turned up on a lime scooter.

I really enjoyed getting to pick her brains and find out what makes her tick and I hope you guys do as well.

08 Dec 2022Bite size: Kendra Cocksedge00:04:13

On the evening of Saturday November 13, 2021, while Kendra was overseas with the Black Ferns, her sister and brother-in-law in Taranaki were dealing with the tragic news that their 18-year-old son, Jordy had drowned in the Waiwhakaiho River.

Speaking to media at the time about her sons passing, Kendras sister Nic said:

“He was just one of a kind. He was so loveable, so witty. Life without him is going to be dim. We still are broken, and we will be for a long time. I’m dreading the rest of my life to be fair.”

In this poignant bite size clip taken from our full conversation, Kendra reflects on Jordy and how she managed her own grief while being stuck in MIQ, away from her family.

It was an incredibly difficult thing to talk about so I can’t thank Kendra enough for being so open.

11 Dec 2022Episode 50: Rachel Maia01:14:07

Rachel Maia from Whanganui is total bad-ass. But just DON’T call her “Inspirational.” (She explains why during our conversation).

As well as being a mum to three kids, Rachel is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world.

What makes this even more remarkable is the backstory. When she was 16, Rachel had a freak fall from a reasonably small height at an indoor climbing wall and broke both her ankles.

Then years later as an adult she decided to return to the spot she loves…even though it had, in many ways, ruined her life.

In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee.

It’s a hell of a journey and I really hope you guys like it. Rachel Maia is a woman on a mission to remind each and every one of us that we all have unlimited potential.

Need to warn you, there were a couple of sound and microphone issues with this episode. I’m so sorry about that. If you are listening with earplugs in it may not be too annoying (hopefully) but yeah, its an incredible story so I hope Rach's story is bigger than the technical difficulties.

15 Dec 2022Bite size: Rachel Maia.00:04:31

This “bite size” podcast episode comes from my full conversation with Rachel Maia. If you like this snippet, feel free to listen to her whole remarkable story when you have a spare hour.

Rach is mum of three from Whanganui. She is also one of the best lower limb amputee para-climber in the world. Hell of a story. She only got the leg amputated 3 years ago after sucking up a lifetime of pain from a climbing wall injury she suffered in her teens.

In 2019, Rach made the decision to amputate below her left knee.

18 Dec 2022Episode 51: Shane Cameron00:47:10

Shane Cameron is one of New Zealands best known boxers. He is now a sucessful businessman.

Shane and I sat down for this podcast way back in January. Long before the podcast “Runners Only!” even launched. Being on the cusp of being an actual boomer, I lost this entire audio file and some others…or so I thought. They turned up the other day on an SD card (long born story).

Shane’s a good dude and I forgot how enjoyable our conversation was. We talk in depth about the “fight of the century” against David Tua (and how long it took him to recover mentally from the beating), Dancing with the stars, life before and after boxing, the Commonwealth games, and heaps more.

Please “subscribe” if your podcast platform allows it, and it’ll be on your phone on Monday morning when you wake up.

Here is the you tube link to THAT fight against David Tua which we discuss in detail:

25 Dec 2022Episode 53: Ian Winson00:59:37

In 2011, Ian Winson went to his job as an engineer for Watercare in Onehunga in Auckland.

An explosion occurred which killed one of Ians Collegaes. Ian survived the blast but was seriously injured. The accident cost him both his legs, caused severe injuries to his arms, and left him close to death.

Before the explosion Ian's life had revolved around work, sport and family. In one day he went from being an Ironman competitor to an amputee requiring months of rehabilitation just to reach a stage of basic mobility.

Ian story is an incredible one. It’s a story of bravery, determination, and hope.

22 Jan 2023Episode 54: Dame Lisa Carrington 01:22:33

Dame Lisa Carrington is possibly the most esteemed guest on the podcast so far. Not only the very first Dame but also the greatest NZ Olympian of all time with 5 gold medals and hundreds of other accolades to her name.

This is such a cool conversation. We see Lisa on TV, usually smiling on the podium with a gold medal around her neck followed by a 30-second sound bite on the news. But I have never heard Lisa be this candid before. Ever. This is a true look into the mind of a world-class athlete. You’ll get to know her strengths, weaknesses, flaws, fears, insecurities, and everything in between.

I always thought she was a good role model. Now I know for certain that she is!

29 Jan 2023Episode 55: David Seymour (ACT party leader)01:39:30

David Seymour is probably most famous for two things- being the leader of the Act party for almost a decade. And twerking in lycra on DWTS!

We talk about his relationship with other politicians including Jacinda Ardern and Winston Peters.

We talk about the death of his mum to cancer in his early 20 and why he has never watched the DVD she made for him in her final weeks, his whole DWTS experience, all the strange little moments he has gone viral for, his relationship with alcohol and how drunk was he really at the last election night?

I understand politics is a murky area. So polarising. But I genuinely care what you guys think so please let me know. Are you keen to hear more from any of the people who run our country? Or not really? My goal is just to speak to really interesting people from all walks of life and learn what makes them tick…but I also want to make sure I deliver you guys a great show each week.

Ryan Fox is one of the world’s greatest golfers.

At the time of writing this, his world ranking was number 30. In this conversation, recorded during his Christmas holiday we talk about loads of stuff- what it feels like to win $1.1 million dollars in a week, and how much of that he must pay out to his team.

Life growing up as the son of Grant Fox – one of the greatest all blacks ever.

Max Key is a person that most people probably have an opinion on.

This conversation will either change your mind or reinforce what you already think. Either way, Max said he doesn’t care…and I believe him!

He was 13 years old in 2008 when his dad became the Prime Minister of New Zealand, a job that meant every single teenage mis-step Max made was played out in the public eye.

In this conversation we cover alot of topics including...

His earliest memories of his dad talking about a desire to become Prime Minister.

Perks of being the PM’s son

Growing up in a wealthy household,

Internet trolls, online bullying and his reputation as a “party boy”

His mental health and the rock bottom moment that happened during his OE in the Bahamas. Then the road to recovery.

The rare disease he caught overseas that caused him to lose 20 kilos and visit hospital 7 times.

The fight in Croatia where 4 strangers “beat the shit” out of him

His obsession with judo and just how hard his training bootcamp was.

His relationship with his sister, as kids and how it is now

26 Feb 2023Episode 59: Dean Lonergan (NZ league star/event promoter)01:20:10

Dean Lonergan was a Kiwi rugby league player in the late 80s and early 90s. He is reluctantly most remembered for a sickening head clash where he was knocked out cold and convulsing on the field…before returning to play on only 6 minutes later.

Since retiring from sport, he had a very successful career in breakfast radio before reinventing himself once again and becoming New Zealand’s most well known sports promotors, introducing the fight for life concept to NZ.

His life story is one hell of a ride with some huge highs and some very deep lows, and we cover all of them in this conversation:

His league career then radio days

His yearlong depression and what caused it.

The acrimonious split with his Duco events business partner

Why he is now back in NZ and flatting with his mum and sister. And so much more.

05 Mar 2023Dai Henwood 01:41:25

Dai Henwood has been a part of the New Zealand comedy and TV scene for over 20 years.

Starting as a stand up comedian he ended up as one of the team captains on 7Days, a role he held for over a decade. More recently he has hosted big mainstream TV shows like Family Feud, DWTS and LegoMasters.

In late January 2023 he announced publically that he had been living with cancer for 3 years.

At the time of writing this, treatment had included fourteen rounds of chemotherapy, high-dose radiation, three lung surgeries and having parts of his liver and bowel removed. But after the cancer spread to his lungs and lymph nodes, his oncologist told him the cancer was incurable.

Naturally, there is a lot of cancer chat in this conversation. But there is also a lot of other stuff about his life and career which is important because, as Dai has said himself, cancer doesn’t define me.

In this short "Bite size" podcast, which is a small portion of our full length conversation, Guyon reflects on the last time he got drunk (3 years ago) and his decision to give up alcohol altogether.

19 Mar 2023Adam Parore 01:29:19

In the 90’s and early 2000s, Adam Parore was a star of the NZ cricket team.

Then he could be seen on the cover of Women’s Day every other week.

Over a decade ago he went to ground and there has been very little written about him in the public domain ever since.

This conversation is sort of in three different chapters:

The cricket career, including being mentored by his mate Martin Crowe.

Climbing Mount Everest….and almost dying the day before he made it to the summit.

Why he removed himself from the public eye, his loves and losses and the toll that’s played on his mental health and a bunch of other really special stuff that I loved and I hope you do too.

Thanks so much to the sponsors of this episode. Radix Nutrition. The podcast is just over a year old now and it is only through the support of cool brands like Radix for being adventurous and jumping on a project like this that it is possible to keep making a brand new episode each week. So please check them out:

26 Mar 2023Rachel Hunter01:31:03

Rachel Hunter was a secondary school student in Auckland when she was "discovered" by a photographer. She soon became one of the world’s most in demand models, earning a reputation only a handful of people had of people had as a “super model.“

So, what business does she have being on a podcast called Runners only? Glad you asked! She literally was out running when she was “discovered.”

This conversation was so enjoyable. We cover a lot of ground including the moment she quit school to become a model- great story…it involves a phone call to the school office landline while she was mid math’s exam.

Her reflections on Andy Hayden and how she got a gruff ex All Black to be her manager (Spoiler: it was a lot harder than you'd think).

We chat about the iconic Trumpet ad, posing for Playboy and staring in the iconic Stacie’s mom music video.

Why she has never read the chapter about herself in the Rod Stewart autobiography. We talk about Rod a lot…probably way more than she was comfortable with- sorry Rach!! LOL

The death of her mum, becoming a grandmother, menopause and much much more.

27 Mar 2023ZANE ROBERTSON- A worldwide exclusive interview00:42:55

On Tuesday March 22, it was announced that NZ distance runner, Zane Robertson had received a seven-year ban for failing a drug test.

Four years was for taking the banned substance EPO, an additional three years was for trying to cover up his failed test.

At the age of 33, this likely spells the end of his professional career.

Zane and I connected to have this conversation the morning after, Thursday March 23.

In this podcast, a tired and understandably emotional Zane talked openly and frankly about the announcement and the events leading up to it.

To WATCH the conversation with Zane, please go to my YouTube channel:

02 Apr 2023Sir Ashley Bloomfield01:12:43

Sir Ashley Bloomfield was the director general of health when Covid-19 came to New Zealand early in 2020.

He became one of the most recognizable faces and names in New Zealand for his daily 1pm briefings with the PM which because essential viewing.

We sat down for this podcast conversation on the 3rd anniversary of New Zealand’s initial Covid lockdown.

He turned up to my place on a bike (not one with a battery either, full old school bike) wearing a correctly fixed helmet, of course.

We chat about his marathon running experiences and why he is taking a break from mountain biking for a while.

His early life growing up and meeting his wife Libby at medical school.

The anxiety of facing the media at 1pm every day and the terror of doing radio interviews with Mike Hosking on Newstalk ZB.

His relationship with Jacinda Ardern during the pandemic and their relationship now

The viral "spread your legs" moment. His Knighthood and much more.

We had limited time so there was a lot of stuff I would have liked to cover that we didn’t get round to. But I can’t thank Dr Bloomfield enough for being so generous with his time, experience and stories. I loved his company and our chat- he came in with really good energy. I genuinely hope you guys like it too.

30 Mar 2023Bite size: Rachel Hunter reflects on her break up with Rod Stewart00:06:44

Rachel Hunter was a secondary school student in Auckland when she was "discovered" by a photographer as she ran along an Auckland beach. She soon became one of the world’s most in demand models, earning a reputation only a handful of people had as a “super model.“

In this "bite size" clip taken from our full conversation, Rachel and I speak openly about her ex-husband and the father of her children, Rod Stewart,

She reveals why she has never read the parts about herself in his book and reflects on that moment she told him the relationship wasn't going to last and her feeling about him now.

Even though they broke up over 20 years ago, I know this is a tough subject so I can't thank Rachel enough for going back there and reflecting.

If you like this bite size podcast, please go and listen to the whole conversation when you have time. It was a very enjoyable one to do.

09 Apr 2023Mitch James (NZ singer/songwriter)01:33:02

This is Mitch James. Episode two.

This episode is incredibly special to me. Mitch was the very first guest on this podcast when it launched a year ago.

Since then, a lot has changed for both of us so I wanted to get him back for a catch up episode.

Some of you may have heard that very first episode. I’m guessing most of you guys haven’t heard it. But either way,

This IS NOT a recap episode. We cover completely new stuff. Including a track-by-track deconstruction of Mitch’s recent album, Patience.

Thanks very much to the legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.

They make a whole range of awesome products at their state of the art factory in the Waikato I’m obsessed with their protein and have one for breakfast every morning without fail.

06 Apr 2023Rich Farrell (NZ Strongman and depression survivor)00:46:44

Rich Farrell!! I suspect you have not heard the name before. Rich isn’t famous, but he is one of the physically strongest men in New Zealand.

Using his stage name “the madness” he goes to competitions and lifts boulders and logs, flips big tractor tyre's, those sorts of things.

He went through a lot of ups and downs before finding himself and then finding this sport that gave him focus and purpose.

He has never told his full story publicly before, so I thank him for the opportunity.

He only wants to share his journey in the hope that it can help some other people.

This chat needs to come with a trigger warning. It does contain chat about depression and suicide.

16 Apr 2023Mike Rudling (Radix Nutrition founder and CEO) 01:09:59

Mike Rudling is the founder and CEO of Radix Nutrition (who are the sponsors of this podcast).

The team at Radix Nutrition asked if I would consider having Mike on as a guest and I didn’t hesitate to say yes.

We discuss the origins of this company which he started in the Bay of Islands 10 years ago when he was 23.

We dive into Mike's childhood in England and his experiences with dyslexia and boarding school.

We also explore his transition from competitive swimming to cyclist and the mental health challenges Mike faced after being forced to give up on his dream of professional sports.

This is an episode full of insightful conversations and personal reflections with one of the most intensely focused guests I’ve ever had.

Mike Rudling is a man with a mission to make you and I healthier through what we eat. I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if, ten years from now, Radix Nutrition is a household name in New Zealand and many other countries so it’s an honor to introduce you to the very big brains behind it while they are still in a self-described start-up phase.

23 Apr 2023Suzy Cato 01:19:20

SUZY CATO.

I think for the most part Suzy is a New Zealander who needs no introduction. Chances are if you are in your 20s or 30s now, she was a big part of your childhood (she is the undisputed queen of children’s TV in Aotearoa).

In this episode, I had the pleasure of diving deep into her life and career. We explored her beginnings in radio, her transition to TV, and how she met her husband, Steve.

We also discussed Susie's experiences dealing with the heartbreak of losing a baby and being let go from TV3, as well as how she bounced back from those terrible experiences.

We talked about Susie's relationship with exercise and her childhood growing up in Kaikohe.

We touched on Suzy’s personal experiences with prioritizing mental health, coping with grief and navigating career changes.

We also discussed her stints on reality TV with Dancing with the Stars and The Masked Singer.

She is such fun company and I really hope you guys enjoy it as much as I did.

30 Apr 2023Billy Evans (Boston police commissioner)01:04:16

William "Billy" Evans.

It was an absolute honor and a privilege to spend an hour with Billy Evans in Boston, just 2 days after the 2023 Boston marathon (which he ran with his two sons).

Ten years ago, Billy ran the Boston marathon, then shortly after finishing, he and his entire Boston police force had to get to work to try and find out who was responsible for the two bombs that went off near the finish line of the marathon.

If you have seen the Netflix documentary series, “American Manhunt: The Boston marathon bombing” you will be familiar with Billy.  He is the first face you see in episode one. He is also the person responsible for capturing one of the two bombers alive after he called for a ceasefire after an intense shoot-out on a boat.

Billy has lived in Boston his whole life and spent his entire adult life in law enforcement.

He is a passionate runner, husband, dad, and Bostonian. And I could not believe my luck when he kindly agreed to sit down with me while I was in his city.

In our hour we talk about his relationship with running, his upbringing and losing both his parents at a young age, his decades as a cop in Boston then the Boston bombing, a case that defined his career.

Thanks very much to my mates at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. These guys are doing incredible work with their small team from their big factory in Waikato. And it’s an honor to have a front row seat as they take on the world: They do a whole range of exceptional products- I start the day with a protein shake using their powder (usually banana or coconut).

07 May 2023Campbell Johnstone: First openly gay All Black.01:13:41

Campbell Johnstone made a name for himself in NZ rugby circles as an All Black and Canterbury Crusaders rugby star in the early 2000's,

He made a name for himself internationally in early 2023 when he became the first ever openly gay all black. This is his story.

This is as they say in rugby, a podcast of two halves- the first half zooms in on his sexuality and the second half looks back on his rugby career which included three super rugby titles.

We chat about his decision to do the interview on Seven Sharp with Hilary Barry, growing up gay and his earliest sexual experiences, coming out to his parents, dabbling with the Grindr dating app and much more.

Then we look back on his rugby career- his thoughts on Razor Robertson as a coach, the hilarious reaction from his dad when he told him he was an All Black, his awkward haka experiences and more.

I really enjoyed Campbells company and I hope you guys love this conversation and get something from it.

Thanks very much to the absolute legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. I start every day with their protein powder mixed with ice cubes and a bit of trim milk. If you are not using protein powder- you should give it a go. Its not just for weightlifters…its useful for anyone who wants to hang on to the muscles you already have (which is so important, especially as you get older).

10 May 2023Jono Ridler (NZ record holder for longest open water swim) 01:01:11

Just 4 days before recording this podcast, Jono Ridler had SMASHED the New Zealand open water swim distance record when he swam 99 kilometers (previous record was 80km)

His 33 hour non-stop swim without a wetsuit started on a fine Tuesday morning and finished on a very story Wednesday night.

I really hope you guys like this chat. Jono is not a big name guest…he’s just a regular guy who has done something incredible and inspiring. Actually, to give you an idea of just how regular he is, after finishing this 99km swim on Wednesday night he spent Thursday in Hospital then was back at work on Friday! .

I absolutely love that- ordinary people doing extraordinary things

There are lots of lessons in here about staying positive and not giving up when things get hard. Even some techniques that any of us can use to achieve greatness in our own lives, whatever your goal is.

14 May 2023Leigh Hart (NZ TV royalty- his most raw & vulnerable interview ever)01:49:09

If you say you don't know who Leigh Hart is, I'd probably raise an eye brow.

He has been part of the New Zealand comedy and TV landscape for two decades now.

He is also the face of Hellers sausages, the creator of Wakachangi beer and, more recently, the insanely good Snackachangi chips THE best Salt n Vinegar chips in the world).

BUT whether you know him or not, I think you’ll be a fan of Leigh after this. It’s a fascinating insight into the mind of a creative genius.

We get real deep and talk about his childhood which included a whole year without seeing his parents.

His entire TV career and which of his old work he regrets now, and how the famous snackachngi chips came about.

Lee also reflects on his marriage breakup, the resilience needed to get through it, and how he has become more emotionally vulnerable with age. This was my favourite part of the conversation. His honestly and vulnerability was profound.

Thanks to my friends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode. I am a daily user of their protein powder. Start every day with a shake for breakfast. Their banana flavor is incredible. They are much more than amazing and delicious protein powder though. You can go to Radix.co.nz to see their whole incredible range of world class products made in the Waikato and shipped to wherever you are on earth.

21 May 2023Hadyn Jones (TVNZ journalist & host)01:10:54

Hadyn Jones is an ultramarathon runner (that’s one of the caps he wears).

He is also a well-known current affairs TV host. You may recognize the face or voice from Fair Go, Seven Sharp, the good sorts segment at the end of the news on Sunday night (a really cool feature he has done for years).

He is also a dad and a husband. All roles that he juggles successfully. His secret includes getting his long runs done when the kids are in bed!

We discussed his running journey, his career including his early years working with Sir Paul Holmes and the decision to relocate and work from Taranaki. We talk about his home life, his recollections from losing his dad at the age of 5 and much more.

I loved sitting down with Haydn and I hope you guys enjoy it too.

Thanks to Radix nutrition for sponsoring this episode.

24 May 2023Simon Cochrane ("Ultraman" world record holder)00:56:20

Simon Cochrane:

A week before this podcast conversation took place, Simon Cochrane travelled from his home in Hamilton NZ to take part in the "Ultraman" event in Noosa as a relative unknown in this event. After 3 days of intense and brutal racing he not only won the event, he also SMASHED the world record.

The Ultraman event is a crazy few days of racing. It was created in 1983 by some mad bastards who, I'm assuming, decided the Ironman distance was too easy LOL. This is what an Ultraman weekend looks like:

Day 1: 10km ocean swim and a 145km bike ride.

Day 2: 276-km bike ride.

Day 3: 84-km run (double marathon).

This is definitely an episode for the running and multi-sport nerds. But there are takeaways in this conversation for everyone. Including time management and how to get more out of yourself every day, and how you can change your situation if you aren’t happy with it and the importance of enjoying everything you do- and how that’s a mindset you can choose. As Simon says with his endurance events: “Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.”

28 May 2023Kelsey Waghorn (Whakaari White Island eruption survivor)01:35:14

Kelsey Waghorn was a Whakaari White Island tour guide in December 2019 when it erupted.

This is a powerful and raw conversation with Kelsey. And it is a tough listen in parts, made slightly easier thanks to Kelsey's ability to find the humor and light in the darkest situations.

We talk about Kelsey and her life before, during and after the eruption, the resilience and courage it takes to navigate life after such a harrowing experience.

Through her journey of healing, both physically and mentally, Kelsey opens up about her struggles with PTSD and how she learned to be kinder to herself.

Her story serves as a stark reminder that even in the darkest of times, laughter and hope can help us heal and move forward.

I loved Kelsey's company so much. She left me feeling inspired, moved and motivated. She doesn’t do much stuff like this so I can’t thank her enough.

04 Jun 2023Jay-Jay Feeney (NZ Queen of music radio)01:19:32

Jay-Jay Feeney is the undisputed queen of music radio in New Zealand. She started the radio station The Edge and grew it into the massive brand that it remains to this day. She currently hosts one of New Zealand’s most listened to afternoon shows on the station, More FM.

She is the author of two books and has won too many NZ radio awards to count!.

This is a strange episode...jeust because of the intensely personal nature of it. I can’t imagine I will ever record a podcast that is as raw, emotive, and vulnerable as this one is.

The reason being- the personal relationship.

JJ and I got married in 2004. We separated about 5 years ago but remain very, very close.

Because of this relationship, we know everything about one another and had the ability to touch upon some very serious stuff. Because of that a trigger warning is needed- this podcast episode discusses family violence and sexual abuse, infertility and IVF, depression, and suicide.

If you listen to this and need some professional help in New Zealand, you can call or text 1737 free of charge to talk to a trained counsellor.

This podcast also includes a lot of light moments too as we zoom in on some of JJs many career highlights.

Adding to their popular Protein range, they have just launched a new range of breakfasts which are incredible: strawberry banana, coconut, vanilla, mixed berry, Apple and cinnamon and chocolate. These are super simple and super healthy. They are filling. And did I mention they taste amazing?

07 Jun 2023Sarah Gearhart (American author)01:03:30

Sarah Gearhart is a New York based sportswriter and now author. You name the organization; she has probably written for it! USA Today, New York Times, Wall Street Journal, ESPN, Runner's World, Vice Sports…

In April 2023 she published her first book: “We Share the Sun: The Incredible Journey of Kenya's Legendary Running Coach Patrick Sang and the Fastest Runners on Earth.”

https://www.booktopia.com.au/we-share-the-sun-sarah-gearhart/book/9781639363551.html

I met Sarah in Boston during the 2023 marathon weekend, and we sat down for this podcast conversation about her experience writing this book including how she convinced the notoriously private Patrick Sang to take part in it, the many many months she spent in Kenya and her observations and experiences with the greatest marathon runner of all time, Eliud Kipchoge. And his coach, Patrick Sang.

I’m a sucker for a running book. I’ve read just about every single one imaginable. This is my new favorite.

(Disclosure: I am a Kipchoge fan boy. But this is so much more than a book about running or the guy behind the guy).

Whether or not you buy or read the book. I do hope you enjoy the conversation with Sarah.

11 Jun 2023Dean Barker (Yachting legend and bowel cancer survivor)01:24:35

DEAN BARKER:

Dean Barker is a name that is synonymous with yachting in NZ. Especially the Americas cup. When you think of that event his name is up there with Coutts and Butterworth back in the day and now Burling and Tuke.

Unfortunately, he is probably remembered most for being the Team NZ skipper when we were on the receiving end of one of the greatest comebacks in sporting history- remember that? San Francisco 2013.  Team NZ was up 8-1 then we ended up losing to Jimmy Spitalls Oracle boat by 9 races to 8.

We reflect on that period in great detail in this conversation.

We also chat at length about Deans battle with bowel cancer recently. Bowel cancer is the most commonly reported cancer in New Zealand…and probably one of the least talked about cancers. As a country we have 3000 cases and 1200 deaths each year.

https://bowelcancernz.org.nz/

Dean has always struck me as being like an old school kiwi guy- stoic, strong, silent and intensely private. So I really appreciate him coming on the podcast and being so open about

some really personal and painful stuff.

Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.

Even before they jumped on board as a sponsor, I was a fan of their products. Now their protein powder is part of my daily plan. Every morning without fail.

18 Jun 2023Mea Motu (World champion boxer and domestic abuse survivor)01:36:33

Mea's life today as a mum of 5 in her early 30s looks very different to how it did just a few years ago.

Through her 20s she was stuck in marriage as a victim of relentless and brutal domestic abuse with unimaginable violence and cruelty.

Mea bravely opens up about her past and how she managed to survive and rebuild her life. By sharing her story, she hopes to empower others to find their own strength and use their voice to make a difference.

I absolutely adore Mea and I know you guys will too.

I think we can all get something from Mea’s journey from rock bottom to the top of the world. If she can get through this, still smiling and laughing. We can all get through whatever adversity life throws your way.

This episode needs to come with a strong warning and I would urge anyone who feels triggered by this discussion to reach out and ask for help. In the words of Mea herself:

25 Jun 2023Duncan Garner Tells All - Today FM Collapse, Getting Arrested, Divorce, and more!01:47:10

Duncan is one of New Zealand's most recognizable broadcasters. He spent 17 years in parliament as TV3s political reporter as well as hosting the AM show for several years and a bunch of other TV and radio shows.

He is now doing a daily podcast called “Editor in chief.”

In this conversation we talk about his journey of overcoming life's obstacles, from the sudden end of his time at Today FM to navigating a divorce, the pandemic and even a wrongful arrest- something he has never talked about publicly before.

Duncan also shares with me his insights on family, happiness, and resilience as he shares some of the lessons he's learned along the way.

28 Jun 2023Shorty Clark - Defying Aging and Becoming a World Champion Triathlete at 7100:58:56

Shorty Clark from New Plymouth is officially the worlds best triathlete in the 70-74 category.

He became a world champion in Abu Dhabi late in 2022 at the age of 71.

9 months later, in this podcast, he still gets emotional talking about that moment.

It’s a sport he only took up in his late 40s and back then he couldn’t even swim so its been a long journey- a 26 year apprenticeship he jokes.

I thought Shorty's story would be a good one to share for a few reasons. The main one being what YOU and I can get out of it. It’s a good boot up the arse and reminder that with hard work, persistence, and some good old fashioned self discipline, even things that might seem impossible can become possible.

02 Jul 2023Marcus Daniell - Winning an Olympic Bronze Medal, Founding a Charity, Mental Health, and more!01:21:46

Marcus Daniell is New Zealand's fifth greatest tennis player of all time (According to a random website I found with a google search).

Questionable website rankings aside he is a phenomenal tennis player, especially in doubles. He won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics. And has beaten Novak Djokovic!

He is so much more than a good tennis player though. Off the court, he is the founder of an epic charity called HIA (High Impact Athletes) which we discuss in this podcast.

He also shares his remarkable journey in the world of tennis, philanthropy, and mental resilience.

09 Jul 2023Mils Muliaina Reflects on All Blacks Career, Wrongful Arrest, Life After Rugby, and more!01:32:19

Mils Muliaina would dispute this, but he is one of the Greatest All Blacks of all time.

He was only the second All Black to play 100 tests (less than a month after Richie became the first).

He was part of the team that won the 2011 Rugby world cup against France in that nail biting final. He was also part of the team that lost the world cup 4 years earlier after being beaten by France.

But Mils is so much more than a former All Black and accordingly, rugby only makes up a small part of this epic 90-minute conversation. I can’t thank Mils enough for being so willing to open up about his life, especially the messy stuff. He is by his own choice a reasonably private person these days, so this was a rare glimpse into mind of Mils.

06 Jul 2023James Constantine - Sydney’s Quest for a World Marathon Major (Bonus Episode)00:28:05

*BONUS EPISODE: VERY MUCH ONE FOR THE RUNNING NERDS*

James Constantine is a keen runner (he’s bloody quick, too) and he is also part of the huge team putting on this year’s Sydney marathon, presented by Asics, on Sunday September 17.

It is a very special event this year- it is a “candidate race” in hunt to join New York, London, Berlin, Boston, Tokyo and Chicago as a World Marathon Major. To earn major status, they have a checklist of 104 requirements, one of the key requirements being the number of runners participating.

Already they have over 10,000 people signed up which will make it officially the biggest marathon event ever held in Australasia.

In this conversation with James, we talk about the process of Sydney trying to join the ranks of the world’s most prestigious marathons.

I’m signed up and I cannot wait- I’d love to see you there too!

They have an “early bird” entry available until the end of July ($165)

And Air New Zealand have some decent priced flights that weekend ($600 return)

16 Jul 2023Hannah Wilkinson talks FIFA Women's World Cup, Sexuality, Football career, and more!01:15:54

Hannah Wilkinson or “Wilky” as she is known by her team mates is one of the star players of the New Zealand Footballs Ferns, a team she has played in since she was a teenager. 13 years ago.

She has played over 100 games, been to three Olympics, played in 3 (soon to be 4) FIFA Women’s World Cup tournaments and that’s just the tip of her football iceberg.

I would like to think this episode is a good glimpse into the mind of one of New Zealand’s greatest footballers of all time. And hopefully you’ll come away with a better idea of who Hannah the person is on and off the pitch.

23 Jul 2023Maia Wilson Opens Up About Silver Ferns Career, Body Image Issues, and more!01:18:12

Maia Wilson first made the silver ferns in 2016 when she was still 19 and has been there shooting goals, and lots of them ever since.

But she is so much more than an awesome netballer- sports wise, she made the NZ women's basketball team when she was just 16.

In this conversation we chat about a whole range of stuff like body image, self-worth, and the societal pressures faced by professional athletes. Also coping with the death of her nana and dad in quick succession. Then getting through the lockdown while helping nurse her mum through a diagnosis of lung cancer.

Maia has dealt with a tonne of adversity which has helped make her the fierce bullet-proof resilient waihine that she is today.

She is a real breath of fresh air and so much fun to talk to- as well as being talented, fiercely competitive and driven…she is also bloody hilarious!

30 Jul 2023Jay-Jay Feeney Asks Me YOUR Questions - 1 Million Download Special!00:55:19

Last week we hit a massive podcast milestone- the one millionth download.

To celebrate, we have taken a departure from the usual weekly podcast. On this episode, Jay-Jay Feeney takes over and asks me the questions- all centered around the podcast journey so far. Some of them are her questions but most of them come from you guys on social media.

Some nerdy podcast stats here - 1 million downloads puts us firmly in the top 1% of all podcasts worldwide which is insane. And we reached this milestone in 17 months.

For that I cannot express enough gratitude to YOU for listening. Especially if you have been along for the ride since the beginning or early into the podcast journey.

Also, thanks to all the businesses who have supported the podcast so far. In particular, Radix Nutrition who have been the longest and most loyal sponsor. I love you guys!!

02 Aug 2023Ryan Hall on Running Fastest EVER Marathon & Half-Marathon in USA History [Bonus Episode]01:11:43

Fun fact: Ryan Hall and I raced each other in 2011 at the Boston marathon (only, he had no idea we were racing).

I finished in 5528th place with a time of 3 hours 20 minutes.

Ryan finished in 4th place with a time of just under 2 hours and 5 minutes, around 2 minutes per kilometer quicker than me!

That day he set a record that still stands now as the fastest marathon ever run by an American.

On this episode, we trace the highs and lows of his illustrious running career, from that epic run in Boston to the disappointment of having to pull out of the Olympic marathon in London and the career ending injuries he endured.

Ryan gives us a peak behind the curtain on the massive physical and mental effort that goes into preparing for these huge races- both for himself as a runner, and now in his role as coach to his wife, Sarah Hall, who is a total badass.

We talk so much more than running though:

Ryan's now a tank as a result of years of weightlifting so we chat about that transformation.

He was 63 kilos when he stopped running…now he kind of looks like Dwayne Johnson.

We also chat about Ryan and his wife Sarah's decision to adopt 4 sisters from an orphanage in Ethiopia and the challenges of raising a family who know very little English language or American culture.

Ryan's story is about resilience, perseverance, and the courage to let go, pivot, and embrace new paths.

Ryan has such a good attitude. He might be the most laid back and chilled serious athlete you could ever meet. I loved our time together in Boston and I hope you do too.

06 Aug 2023Arch Jelley pt. 2 - 100-Year-Old Reflects on Career, Technology, Life After Death, and more!01:04:55

Arch Jelley is one of New Zealand’s greatest running coaches. He coached the great John Walker through his entire career and all the highlights that entailed including an Olympic gold

medal in 1976 and 3 Commonwealth Games medals, over 100 sub 4 minute miles and the first man to run a mile in under 3.50.

But this podcast has very little to do with running. I met Arch last year when he was 99 when we recorded a podcast and we have remained in touch since then. On the week of this podcast being released, Arch turns 101. So, I invited him back for a podcast where I would put YOUR questions to him. Arch is still in tremendous health, physically and mentally, so this was a real treat- it’s not often you get to pick the brains of someone who has seen and done so much and is still around and able to share that wisdom.

I really enjoy spending time with Arch and I hope you guys do too. He really is a national treasure.

13 Aug 2023Sam Harvey Reflects on Tying WORLD RECORD for Non-Stop Running, Tall Poppy Syndrome, and MORE!01:46:33

In June 2023 Sam Harvey from Christchurch came painfully close to breaking the world record for ultra distance running, after running pretty much non-stop for more than four days.

Sam ran for 101 hours and covered 677km at an event in Queensland. His heart and mind are so unbreakable that he was FORCED by organizers to pull out of the race after he fell over and collapsed on the course.

Sam is a fascinating guy with an unbreakable mindset so this episode is so much more than a podcast about running.

For most listeners, as well as getting to know a bit more about this average ordinary guy who is on a mission to redefine what the human mind and body is capable of, most of us will get to learn a bit more about the fringe running events known as backyard ultras.

20 Aug 2023Cameron Jones OPENS UP About Shortland Street, Life in Hollywood, Mental Health Issues01:37:55

Cameron Jones is a New Zealand actor. If you’re an old fan of Shortland Street, you may remember him from that. He cut his teeth as Dallas Jones the ambulance driver in Shorties ten years ago.

He was also in the Hobbit movies, a Christmas movie with Dolly Parton and has a brand new movie called Home Kills which has been showing as part of the NZFF.

I didn’t know much about Cam prior to this conversation. But I learned so much- what his dad thought about his career choice as an actor and the final conversation they had before his dad passed away, the stress of trying to break into the LA acting scene, the bizarre thing he got offered thousands of dollars to do, his struggles with his mental wellbeing and much more.

A mutual friend of ours suggested I get Cam on as a guest and he didn’t disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know more about him and I hope you do too.

27 Aug 2023Penny Taylor - Surviving Meningococcal, Life as Double Amputee, and more!01:15:36

Chances are you don’t know who Penny Taylor is. But hers is a story worth listening to. She’s an inspiration. And offers a reminder that bad things happen to good people and whatever it is you are going through; you CAN get through it.

In November 2009, Penny Taylor, a single mum of 2 from Palmerston North contracted meningitis and was given 30 minutes to live.

She not only survived. She thrived.

Despite being told by doctors that she would never walk again, she has 2 prosthetic legs and is fitter and more active than most of us. You can follow her on inspirational Instagram account: https://www.instagram.com/fitness.amputeenz/

Penny doesn’t do a lot of this stuff, so I appreciate her sharing her story and going back to some pretty bleak times and I hope you guys like it too.

Thanks to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.

I start every day with a protein shake made with protein powder from Radix. But they do so much more than just protein powder. I don’t want anyone to buy something they don’t want or need, but it would be nice if you would support the people who have enabled me to grow this podcast this year. Also, their products really are the best.

03 Sep 2023John Hart, Former All Black Coach - Mental Health Struggles, Remembering Jonah Lomu, and more!01:37:51

This is the very first podcast that former All Black coach John Hart has ever agreed to do (thanks to our mutual mate Kerre Woodham for convincing him to do it)..

John was the coach of the legendary Auckland NPC side who won titles in 82, 84 and 85.

That 1985 side also won the Ranfurly shield and kept it for 61 games which remains a record in shield history.

We talk at length about the disgraceful fallout after the 1999 RWC semifinal loss against France, where he was spat on at a horse race in Christchurch, something which spiraled John into a deep and long-lasting depression.

John is a man who has devoted a lot of his life to NZ sport- in rugby he coached 142 games for a total of three teams and retired from the sport with a win record of 84.5%

He keeps his head down these days by choice so I can’t thank him enough for coming over to chat- especially about some of the less sexy stuff.

I really enjoyed spending time with John and I hope you do too.

Thanks very much to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.

Without there support, it would not be possible to keep bringing you these conversations- it’s a fair amount of work each week and their investment is crucial. I only tell you this so that you may be compelled to check out what they are all about and, if you like what you see, maybe become a customer. I almost guarantee that once you try their products, you will become a fan- they are that good.

17 Sep 2023Dr. Ben O'Keefe - Abuse from Rugby Fans, 2023 Rugby World Cup, Was Richie McCaw A Cheat?01:47:30

Dr. Ben O'Keefe is one of the world’s Best rugby referees.

He is also a doctor who specializes in Ophthalmology (fancy word for eye stuff).

He made headlines for the death threats and social media backlash he experienced after he reffed the super rugby final this year between the Crusaders and the Chiefs.

At the time of releasing this episode he is busy representing New Zealand as an official referee at the RWC in France. His games include France Vs Uraguay, Japan Vs Argentina and South Africa Vs Ireland.

In this conversation we explore Ben’s journey from general medicine to ophthalmology, his passion for rugby, and how he balances both these intense careers.

I invited Ben on after he blew up on Instagram by sharing some of the gross comments he got after the super rugby final. Also, he is just an inspiring New Zealander who is kicking serious life goals and probably doesn’t get the recognition he deserves.

20 Sep 2023Sir John Kirwan: NZ's Mental Health Pioneer, Managing Depression, and more! (Re-Release)01:18:22

This podcast with Sir John Kirwan was first released in September 2022.

I am re-sharing it now to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week 2023 in New Zealand.

If you are an early listener to the podcast who has already heard this one, just skip it.

But if you have just recently discovered the podcast, you may really enjoy this one- I still get messages every other week from people telling me they listened and got a lot of valuable tips from Sir John.

Either way, thanks for checking the podcast out. I genuinely appreciate you being here to read this.

Sir John Kirwan is an All Black legend. But its what he has done since retiring from sport that has made him an all-round legend.

15 years ago JK reluctantly spoke publicly about his depression and mental health struggles (we discuss his reluctance in this chat- I won't tell you who pushed him into doing it!)

Mental health has never had more chat that what it currently gets. This guy was the trailblazer. NOBODY really talked about this stuff publicly before Sir John.

There are so many tips, tricks and tools from JK in this conversation that we can all use to improve our mental health. We also reminisce a little bit about his time as a butcher, an All Black and a DB Bitter Warrior.

If this episode triggers anything, PLEASE chat to someone you trust. Or text 1737 anytime (NZ). You’ll get to chat to a trained counsellor.

24 Sep 2023Suzie Bates - Cricket & Basketball Career, Partying with Kobe, Coaching Melie Kerr, and more!01:31:51

Suzie Bates is the GOAT of New Zealand women’s cricket. And just an awesome all-round human.

She first made the New Zealand team in 2006 when she was 19. Now she is 36 and still playing like the absolute boss that she is

She’s also a bloody talented basketballer and went to the Olympics in 2008 playing for the NZ side- we talk about that experience including how she ended up partying with the USA “Redeem team” including LeBron and Kobe.

We chat about her alter-ego "Betsy" who comes out after a couple of chardonnays, what Mick Jagger WASN’T wearing when she met him in his dressing room and much much more.

I was left with the impression that she has such a growth mindset that she doesn’t take a lot of time to pause and reflect on all the cool stuff she has achieved and experienced in her life. And there is so so much to reflect on!

Thanks to the legends at Radix Nutrition for getting behind this episode.

01 Oct 2023The Mad Butcher - Racism Controversy, Near Death Experience, Warriors & Kiwis Legacy 01:22:18

Sir Peter Leitch is better known as "The Mad Butcher"

He is a man most New Zealanders recognize from his voice.

He is New Zealand’s most high-profile butcher, a very successful businessman, a diehard supporter of the Warriors and Rugby league. And, he would argue this point, but I think he is a man that probably doesn’t get the recognition he deserves for his charitable acts. It’s hard to think of someone who have been more generous with their time and money than the Mad Butcher.

I have always liked the Mad Butcher. But I like him even more after this and I hope you guys enjoy it too.

04 Oct 2023BONUS MINI EPISODE: Dom Vs The Mad Butcher - The Argument00:05:19

This is a very short bonus episode that I thought I'd share with you guys.

Recently the podcast went through a rebrand from "Runners Only! With Dom Harvey" to "The Dom Harvey Podcast."

Part of this rebrand included a short video that blew up on social media of The Mad Butcher and myself having a heated argument about the theme of the podcast, which ALOT of people thought was very real.

This snippet is that argument in its entirely and what was said immediately afterwards.

There was no script, no guideline's, and very little pre discussion.

The Mad Butcher sat down and I asked him if we could have a fake argument about the name of the podcast and then we both just went for it.

This episode is bought to you by the legends at the Generate Kiwisaver scheme who have been big supporters of the podcast so I’m ecstatic to have them on board as a partner.

15 Oct 2023How Rob Mokaraka Survived 'Suicide-by-Cop' and Lived To Tell The Story01:20:20

Rob Mokaraka is a mental health advocate who is doing fantastic work educating people through his own harrowing story. His life looks a lot different now to how it did in July 2009. That was when he had a rock bottom moment where he decided to end it all in one of the most violent ways imaginable- suicide by cop.

This is Robs story- warts and all.

At any point during this podcast if you feel you need to speak to a professional, either for yourself or for someone you care about, here are a list of resources which I urge you to use:

22 Oct 2023Melie Kerr's Battle with Mental Health - White Ferns & IPL Cricket Star OPENS Up01:51:40

Melie (Amelia) Kerr is a ridiculously talented cricket player from Wellington.

She is also wise beyond her age. She is the youngest podcast guest ever (I think) but already has been through so much and has an ability to share her journey in a way that we can all gain from.

Melie took me back to her darkest period back in 2021 and shares some pretty dark stuff, I know its not easy to revisit this stuff so I can’t thank her enough.

As well as being an incredible cricketer she has also become a powerful mental health advocate by sharing her own struggles with her incredible video series, “Treading Water”

29 Oct 2023Matt Watson on Ending the ITM Fishing Show, David Letterman Appearance, Tall Poppy02:22:22

Matt Watson is the first name most of us think of when it comes to Fishing in New Zealand.

His iconic TV show ITM fishing is about to finish up after 20 years on our screens.

This conversation is, I hope, Matt Watson as you’ve never seen or heard him before. We discuss the struggles in the early days of getting his idea on TV, Matt gets emotional when he recalls meeting his wife Kaylene and later delivering their son in a car.

We reflect at length on his US TV appearance on Late night with David Letterman- you don’t want to miss that one. And much much more.

There is limited fishing chat in this conversation- but I’d like to think it’s a good conversation and a profile of an awesome New Zealander who has achieved so much through his own grit, persistence and dogged determination. Lessons in this about not giving in that we can all apply!

Matts career would not have been possible without the help of ITM. And I have just as much gratitude for my sponsors-

Radix Nutrition and Generate KiwiSaver- a couple of epic Kiwi owned and operated companies doing great things in their respective fields.

05 Nov 2023Shaz Dagg - Amputee & Para-triathlete's Inspiring Story & Mindset01:26:28

Sharon Dagg, known to her friends as Shaz is a phenomenal woman whose tale of resilience will leave you awestruck.

5 years ago Shaz had her left arm amputated after suffering a horrific farm accident. It’s what she’s achieved since the amputation that’s inspiring (Coast to Coast anyone??)

Her story of pain, transformation, and victory will make you rethink the meaning of limitations. Shaza’s determination is truly contagious.

This conversation was only possible because of my incredible sponsors. The input from Radix and Generate allowed me to fly Shaz up from the Manawatu for this chat. If you like the podcast, the best thing you could do would be to consider supporting these guys:

This conversation with Mike King first came out in June 2022. It is a conversation I still get regular positive feedback about.

If you are new to the podcast, or you missed this episode when I first released it, you should definitely put it on your list. Its very informative, with lots of mental health advice, but its also bloody funny.

12 Nov 2023Between Two Beers - Becoming NZ’s Top Podcast, Friendship, Drinking Culture and more!01:36:28

Steve and Seamus, hosts of the podcast "Between Two Beers"

Maybe you are one of the many fans of Between Two Beers. Or maybe this will be your introduction to the Between Two Beers podcast.

Either way, thanks for checking it out.

Steve Holloway and Seamus Martin are a couple of mates from Hamilton who purchased a cheap microphone and started a podcast pre pandemic, long before podcasts with the shiny object they are today. With talent, persistence, patience and good old fashioned hard work they have built their podcast up into one of top podcasts in New Zealand. And you only have to listen to an episode of their interview podcast to see why- they do a damn good job.

This is a bit of an insight into the guys behind the podcast Steve and Seamus.

Quick technical issue to flag- this was my first ever podcast with two guests. I’m reluctant to call it a threesome. But because of this I was in a different studio with a different microphone set up so at times, the sound distorts a little. My apologies. But I hope you will push through because this was a really good chat.

Thanks to the legends at Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.

From their state-of-the-art factory in the Waikato they have plans to change the world through nutrition…and since I’ve got to know the team pretty well, I have no doubt they will succeed.

19 Nov 2023Gilda Kirkpatrick on Real Housewives of Auckland, Gold Digger Reputation & Politics01:22:53

GILDA KIRKPATRICK:

If you watch reality TV, you may THINK you know Gilda from Real Housewives of Auckland or her very short run on Dancing with the stars.

Or maybe you know of her from the gossip pages which generally label her a socialite or a gold digger. But there is so much more to Gilda Kirkpatrick than any of that. And THIS is a part of her story. Gilda as you have never heard her before.

We talk about growing up in war torn Iran before moving to New Zealand as a teenager. And how these early years and the unimaginable things she saw and experienced shaped her into the person she is today.

We discuss her stance as a Covid anti-vaxer, how her relationship developed with a man 40 years older than her and her thoughts on being labelled a gold digger. Then we discuss her appearances on reality TV, her thoughts on cosmetic surgery, what life looks like in one of Auckland’s most recognizable mansions and much much more.

Gilda is a breath of fresh air with a great perspective and outlook on life and I really hope you guys enjoy this episode.

Thanks so much to Radix Nutrition for sponsoring this episode.

Get amongst their incredible protein powder and smoothie recovery powders. I am obsessed with their banana flavored protein. But they now have an unflavored protein powder in their range (so you can mix it into various recipes and you won't even taste it!)

26 Nov 2023Karin Burger - Silver Ferns Star Opens Up About Love & Life as a Professional Athlete01:39:43

Karin is one of the stars of the Silver Ferns. Just recently she played her 50th test which happened to be a win against Australia. This conversation is part of Karins story.

We talk about her journey from a small town in South Africa to her wildly successful netball career in New Zealand. How she kept grinding for years despite the challenges, overcoming adversity, the importance of mental health in sports, her thoughts on age and even her 'famously single' status.

This episode is packed with stories of determination and resilience that I reckon we can all learn from.

Karin is a real breath of fresh air with a relentlessly positive attitude and outlook on life so I hope you guys enjoy it.

This episode is sponsored by Radix Nutrition. There products are absolutely world class. So many elite athletes are fans, but all of us can live a better quality of life by consuming their products:

03 Dec 2023Nigel Beach - Friendship with Wim Hof, Working with All Blacks, Hot & Cold Exposure01:11:59

Nigel Beach.

In the first half you’ll get to learn a little bit about Nigel, who he is and what he does.

Then in the second half, some info we can all use to improve our own quality of life.

We chat about why Nigel decided to become a physiotherapist and how he ended up working with some of New Zealand’s biggest sports stars.

We get into sauna and cold plunging and how Nigel became close friends with Wim Hoff.

We talk nasal breathing and why its so important for good health. And much more.

At the very least, from this episode you’ll get introduced to a cool person and someone I consider a mate. But hopefully this conversation will give you much more than that- potentially some wisdom and insights that could make your life better.

This is a peak into Kelsi and what makes her tick- I hope you’ll be inspired by her incredible hustle as she shares her journey from a competitive swimmer to a food blogger and now a well-known influencer who is genuinely living her best life.

If you google Kings, you can find out his song “Don’t worry about it” was number 1 on the charts for 33 weeks, making it a NZ record for most weeks at number one which is a remarkable feat.

But this conversation is jam packed with stuff you WON’T find anywhere else:

-His journey of raising a daughter after he became a teenage dad.

-The impact of therapy to deal with his anger issues as a kid.

-His complicated relationship with food which resulted in him getting a gastric sleeve operation.

-Coping with sudden fame, regrets about doing an Air NZ safety video, going on The Traitors reality TV show, finding religion and so much more.

This is a bonus re-release to celebrate Joseph Parkers superb Christmas eve upset against Deontay Wilder.

Joseph was a guest on the podcast in May 2022, in the very early days of the podcast. We sat in his garage, which is full of gym equipment and other toys and spoke candidly at length about his life and career, the good, the bad and the ugly.

If you missed this one when it first came out, now’s a good chance to have a listen and learn a little bit more about this humble kiwi hero who, at 31, has rediscovered the form of his life.

I’m so excited to share this with you guys.

To have this sort of conversation in terms of both length and content with an actor of Martins level was truly a pinch myself moment and I cannot thank him enough for his generosity.

We cover A lot of ground in this one- the early years of Shortland Street, moving to Aussie and becoming best mates with the late Heath Ledger, the Britney Spears Toxic music video, Greys Anatomy, Virgin River and that’s just the career stuff! 21 Jan 2024Andrew Webster - Coaching The Warriors to Success, Shaun Johnson, Up The Wahs Craze, and more!01:09:48

Andrew Webster, or “Webby” as he is known to his players had a phenomenal season in 2023 coaching the NZ Warriors to their first NRL semifinal in years. And winning the hearts of the entire nation in the process.

We chat about the strategies used to build a winning team spirit, including a thing called “extreme ownership.” How he balances his full-noise job and family life with a newborn son, the up the wahs movement, the bunker ref, the revival of Shaun Johnson, his viral winning speech for NRL coach of the year and so much more.

This episode offers a look into the mind of a rugby league genius who is shaping the game.

28 Jan 2024Simone Maier - Multi-Sport World Champ on Racing with Richie McCaw, Sexual Abuse & Mental Health01:40:29

Simone Maier- most of you probably won’t know the name, but you are in for a treat! Simone is, plain and simply a multisport savage. She has won the Coast to Coast four times, after moving to NZ from Germany at 20 unable to speak any English.

She was also teammates in a Godzone event with Richie McCaw and was a contestant on the reality TV show “Tracked.”

But what makes Simone's story is the adversity. Before she came here and experienced the highest or highs, she had to endure very low lows growing up, events which culminated in Simone spending a full year in rehab for an eating disorder and self-harm.

Because of all the themes we discuss, I’ve included a list of resources and numbers available to call in NZ if you feel the need to talk to a professional (You’ll find these at the bottom of this page).

This episode was made entirely possible by the team at Radix. Radix sponsor Simone and took care of all her travel arrangements for this chat. We both gush about how much we love Radix products in this chat. Simone is one of the elite communities that have known about Radix stuff for years. High performance sports people have been using the stuff for years. Its only now that us regular people are learning about this incredible Kiwi creation from Hamilton.

Protein powders, smoothie recovery powders and the best freeze-dried meals in the world.

04 Feb 2024Steve Williams on Tiger Woods' Crazy Life, How He Got Fired, Did He Ruin His Legacy?01:47:03

Steve Williams- the worlds greatest golf caddy of all time!

This was such an honor. Steve is by design a pretty reclusive guy. This is the first long form podcast about his life that he has ever done so it’s a true honor he agreed to do it.

As you would expect, there is a lot of Tiger Wood chat ahead- they were, after all, best friends and had an incredible working relationship for 12 very successful years. Tiger has won a total of 15 majors…and Steve was his caddy for 13 of them.

We talk about Tigers mindset, the dynamics of their relationship, how Steve coped with the backlash from Tigers well publicized indiscretions, the perks, and bonuses from being the caddy of the world’s best golfer and so much more. But this is not Tigers story- this is the Steve Williams story and I’m so excited to give you a peak into the mind of this reluctant hero who for a period in the early 2000s was New Zealand’s highest paid sportsperson….and then gave a lot of it away to Starship hospital.

Big thanks to my sponsors who make these weekly conversations possible. Generate and Radix.

11 Feb 2024Mere Baker - Coaching Ruby Tui, Growth of Women's Rugby, NZ Drinking Culture & more! 01:34:57

MERE BAKER

You may not know the name. But please don’t let that put you off- you are about to be introduced to a hilarious, inspiring, infectious and talented wahine who has one hell of a story.

Mere has by her own admission done a lot of dumb shit…but she has also done a lot of work to become the woman she is today and it’s a privilege to share her story.

Mere is a former sports star. She won the world cup with the Kiwi ferns in 2003 and was an Aotearoa Sevens international.

These days she dabbles in TV commentary. Before that she coached rugby all over the world and had such an impact on a young Ruby Tui that a whole chapter of Rubys book was centered around her coaching style- “abrupt” is the word Ruby uses to describe her!

This is the Mere Baker story- warts n all.

18 Feb 2024Mark Richardson on Feuds with Jacinda Arden & Shane Warne, Outing Ryan Bridge on Live TV01:11:26

MARK RICHARDSON:

Just before we pad up and get to the crease, thanks to my sponsors at Generate and Radix.

Generate is my personal KiwiSaver scheme, and I’d love it if you would consider making it yours too.

I recently moved over to Generates Kiwi saver scheme after meeting up with one of their awesome advisors. And the bottom line is, if I’d done this sooner, my KiwiSaver savings would probably be worth more than they are now.

If you want to make sure you’re making the most of your Kiwisaver account, talk to an adviser now. Head to:

A copy of their product disclosure statement can be found there too. The issuer of the scheme is Generate Investment Management Limited and, of course, past performance does not guarantee future returns.

This episode is also sponsored by Radix, the official nutrition sponsors of Simone Maier who just won her 5th Coast to Coast title.

High performance athletes, like Simone, have been fans of Radix for years, now regular folks like you and I can improve our own lives by using Radix products. The protein powder is incredible. And the freeze dried just-add-water meals are impossibly good- you really do need to try them for yourself.

Righto, onto the episode! So much coming up in this episode with Mark.

We discuss his brand new career transition to a financial advisor at Forsyth Barr, becoming unemployed when Today FM shut down and the toll it took on his mental health, reflections on his time as one of the world’s best cricketers- including his complex relationship with the late Shane Warne, becoming public enemy #1 for a week after he asked the Prime Minister a controversial question on TV, accidentally outing Ryan Bridge on the AM Show and much much more.

I really hope you enjoy this episode as much as I did.

Thanks, Dom

03 Mar 2024Alex Pledger Opens Up - Battle with Bowel Cancer, Basketball Legacy & NZ Breakers Dynasty02:16:21

ALEX PLEDGER

Alex is officially the tallest podcast guest ever. He is also the guest with the biggest feet…and maybe the biggest heart as well.

This was the first time we had ever met; I knew very little about Alex but the two hours just flew by. There are lots of lessons in here….the most important one being the importance of early detection for bowel cancer. This episode could literally save lives!

We cover a lot of ground here- the highs of his epic basketball career including 5 NBL titles with the Breakers, the harrowing lows of his bowel cancer journey, the beautiful love story with his wife Bailey and so much more. You guys are gonna love this one.

Thanks so much for my epic sponsors for the support, Generate and Radix.

10 Mar 2024Aesha Scott on Below Deck Fame, Preventing Assault on Camera, ADHD Diagnosis & More!01:42:19

Aesha Scott is one of the stars of the Bravo show “Below Deck.” Some of you will be massive fans of the woman crowned NZ TV personality of the year.

But I guess some of you would have no idea who she is.

Either way, you are in for a treat! I’ve done over 100 podcast episodes so far and this might be the wildest episode yet. This true-blue kiwi chick is amazing- relentlessly positive and just naturally likeable and hilarious. But also, so authentic.

I think this may be Aesha Scott as you have never heard before- she was so open, raw and vulnerable about a lot of really tough life events.

We chat about her mum’s battle with alcohol and this impact that had for Aesha as a young girl.

Reflections on her parents’ divorce.

Losing her older brother to a brain tumor.

Her recent therapy journey.

Her ADHD diagnosis as a kid.

How she landed a role on one of the world’s biggest reality TV shows and so much more.

Thanks so much to my incredible sponsors: Radix and Generate. Please support the legends who support the podcast.

https://radixnutrition.co.nz/

I was a huge fan of Radix even before they became sponsors. I start every day with a shake made with their protein powder. And in the past year, their freeze dried meals have become a staple in my diet. You truly have to try them for yourself to understand how epic they are in terms of taste, how filling they are, how good they are for you and how easy they are.

I read a story last week that a lot of us could be missing out on $312,000 just by ignoring your Kiwisaver. If YOU want to make sure you’re making the most of your KiwiSaver account, talk to a Generate adviser now. A copy of their product disclosure statement can be found there too.  The issuer of the scheme is Generate Investment Management Limited and, of course, past performance does not guarantee future returns.

24 Mar 2024Olivia McTaggart - Pole Vaulter Opens Up About Body Image, Online Objectification & Tall Poppy Syndrome01:28:10

Olivia McTaggart is 24 years old and is one of the greatest pole-vaulters NZ has ever produced.

Her highest jump, so far, is 4 meters 71cm (for comparison, the height of a double decker bus is 4 meters 40 centimeters).

At 18 she fulfilled her childhood dream of going to the Commonwealth Games and finished in the top 10. Then at her 2nd Commonwealth Games she finished 4th. This year, she is hoping to raise the bar- excuse the pun- and go to the Olympics in Paris.

If, like me, you know nothing about pole vaulting you are in for an education as we break down one of the most technical and complex and fascinating sports around. But this is so much more than a sports chat. Liv and I discuss so much cool stuff that I know we can all get some value from:

Building confidence through hard work.

Her 3 P’s: Passion, Persistence and Pride.

Body image and so much more.

Her pre-pole-vault mantra is “Calm and dangerous” and those 2 words definitely describe Liv.

Thanks to the legends who have made this conversation possible- Radix and Generate.

According to a study from Massey university, you’ll need around $600,000 saved up for an awesome retirement lifestyle. The best time to start planning this was yesterday. The second-best time is RIGHT NOW! Generate is an award-winning KiwiSaver provider, with a track record of chart-topping long-term performance. If you want to make sure you’re making the most of your KiwiSaver account, talk to an adviser now. Head to: https://www.generatewealth.co.nz/getadvice
