Show notes This week, Fiona and Hamilton continue their look at 'Eberron: Rising from the Last War' - the Eberron campaign setting for the 5th edition. Created by game designer Keith Baker, Eberron was the winning entry for Wizards of the Coast's Fantasy Setting Search, a competition run in 2002 to establish a new setting for the D&D game. From the 'Eberron: Rising from the Last War' Bio: 'Stories Don’t Always End Well Whether aboard an airship or a train car, embark on thrilling adventures shrouded in intrigue! Discover secrets buried by years of devastating war, in which magic-fueled weapons threatened an entire continent. In the post-war world, magic pervades everyday life, and people of all sorts flock to Sharn, a city of wonders where skyscrapers pierce the clouds. Will you find your fortune on mean city streets or scouring the secrets of haunted battlefields? Will you throw in your lot with the mighty dragonmarked houses, ruthless families who control whole nations? Will you seek truth as a newspaper reporter, a university researcher, or a government spy? Or will you forge a destiny that defies the scars of war? This book provides tools that both players and Dungeon Masters need to explore the world of Eberron, including the artificer character class—a master of magical invention—and monsters birthed by ancient warmongering forces.' 19 Jun 2024 | The DM's Travel Bookclub: 10. The Quasielemental Planes of Radiance & Steam! | 01:27:50
The hosts of The DM's Book Club proudly bring you a new limited series, The DM's Travel Bookclub: A Guide to The Inner Planes! In each episode, we'll explore the Inner Planes of Existence as outlined in the Great Wheel cosmology in the roleplaying game, Dungeons & Dragons. Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, continue their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Quasielemental Planes of Radiance & Steam. The four positive Quasielemental Planes (also known as quasiplanes) hang suspended between the Elemental Planes and the Positive Energy Plane. They combine matter and energy to form vivid, dynamic realms unlike those found anywhere else in the multiverse. The Quasiplane of Radiance is a place of incredible light born of the union between Fire and Positive Energy. Although it's one of the most beautiful sights a body could ever behold, it's also overwhelming. The Quasiplane of Steam forms at the juncture of Water and Positive Energy, where cutters finds themselves swept up in rolling white mists. These vapors are the stuff of clouds and fog and can be breathed safely and feel refreshing against the skin. Book discussed: 'The Inner Planes (2e)' published by Wizards of the Coast (1998). Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, continue their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Paraelemental Planes of Ooze & Smoke. These intermediary areas form where aspects of one Elemental Plane mingle with those of another. In essence, they're elemental alloys. The Paraelemental Plane of Ooze is perhaps the most offensive place in the multiverse, the forming where Water comes into contact with Earth. It's a region of filth and disease, of caustic sludge and living slime. The Paraelemental Plane of Smoke forms at the intersection of Air and Fire. Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, continue their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Quasielemental Planes of Ash & Dust. Markedly different than their positive counterparts, these four negative Quasielemental planes are generally grim places that break down matter. Undead are common in these Quasiplanes, tortured spirits invigorated by the negative energy that infuses everything. The Quasiplane of Ash is an accumulation of burnt matter pressed into a solid mass. In most areas, the quasiplane has the consistency of hard-packed soil, though some regions are much less dense. The Quasiplane of Dust forms when Earth is infused with Negative Energy. It's an expanse of tenuous atmosphere filled with swirling particles of granular matter. Created by game designer Keith Baker, Eberron was the winning entry for Wizards of the Coast's Fantasy Setting Search, a competition run in 2002 to establish a new setting for the D&D game. Eberron combines a fantasy tone with pulp and dark adventure elements, and some non-traditional fantasy technologies such as trains, skyships, and mechanical beings which are all powered by magic. From the 'Eberron: Rising from the Last War' Bio: 'Stories Don’t Always End Well Whether aboard an airship or a train car, embark on thrilling adventures shrouded in intrigue! An interesting mix of Druid-style spellcasting, Fighter-style combat capabilities, and Rogue-style skills, Rangers could be a welcome asset in adventuring parties...could be. According to the Player's Handbook: 'Rangers specialize in hunting the monsters that threaten the edges of civilization—humanoid raiders, rampaging beasts and monstrosities, terrible giants, and deadly dragons. They learn to track their quarry as a predator does, moving stealthily through the wilds and hiding themselves in brush and rubble. Rangers focus their combat training on techniques that are particularly useful against their specific favored foes. Thanks to their familiarity with the wilds, rangers acquire the ability to cast spells that harness nature’s power, much as a druid does. Their spells, like their combat abilities, emphasize speed, stealth, and the hunt. A ranger’s talents and abilities are honed with deadly focus on the grim task of protecting the borderlands.' 14 Feb 2024 | Episode #4: Oops All Darts! Monks Pt. 1 | 01:22:25
Show Notes This week, Fiona and Hamilton take a deep dive into the Monk - a playable class from the original 5e Player's Handbook. Monks are spiritual ascetics and practitioners of a mystical energy known as ki, the magical essence which flows through all living things. According to the Player's Handbook: 'Whatever their discipline, monks are united in their ability to magically harness the energy that flows in their bodies. Whether channeled as a striking display of combat prowess or a subtler focus of defensive ability and speed, this energy infuses all that a monk does. Monks make careful study of a magical energy that most monastic traditions call ki. This energy is an element of the magic that suffuses the multiverse—specifically, the element that flows through living bodies. Monks harness this power within themselves to create magical effects and exceed their bodies’ physical capabilities, and some of their special attacks can hinder the flow of ki in their opponents. Using this energy, monks channel uncanny speed and strength into their unarmed strikes. As they gain experience, their martial training and their mastery of ki gives them more power over their bodies and the bodies of their foes.' In this episode, we cover the following:

From the Grits & Glory bio: 'Realistic, historic and low fantasy are among the most difficult to fit in the D&D ruleset. When heroes grow in power and become legends, they are no longer bound to the laws of reality. They no longer fear injury or death. This supplement adds many practical rules that improve the realism of the game. For every rule that makes combat and survival dangerous and lethal, there are player options with emphasis on decision between high risk and great reward. So go ahead, put your armor, take your sword out and see how long you can survive without full hp recovery at long rest!' Check out 'The Thief' podcast: an immersive, fully cast, low-fantasy mystery. Show Notes This week, Fiona and guest host Rob from the Realm of Fire podcast take a deep dive into 'Treasure Hunt', the first AD&D adventure ever to present general rules for 0-level characters! From the 'Treasure Hunt' bio: ''The Island of Viledel, the mighty Sea King, was sacked by a pirate army 60 years ago. It's destruction was so complete that even the location of the island was lost and forgotten. Despite rumours of immense treasures still hidden in the ruined stronghold, no one ever found the Sea King's island again Until now. Through a cruel twist of fate, a small band of unwilling adventurers are washed ashore on a small, barren island, and discovers what remains of Viledel's settlement. But they aren't alone; marauding orcs and goblins have found the island too, and are frantically searching for the lost hoard. In this desperate treasure hunt, the real payoff may be survival. Content Warnings/Trigger Warnings for D&D legacy content: Discussions of Slavery and Cannibalism as described within the setting. Show notes This week, Fiona and returning guest host Rob explore the barren wastelands of Dark Sun, an original 2e D&D campaign setting set in the fictional, post-apocalyptic desert world of Athas. From the Dark Sun Boxed Set (2e) bio: 'Amid the barren wastelands of Athas lie the scattered city-states, each in the grip of its own, tyrannical sorcerer-king. Protecting their own positions with dark magic, they demand absolute obedience. The restless mobs are placated with bread and circuses --the arenas overflow with spectators seeking release from their harsh lives. The land outside the cities belong to no one. Savage elves race across the deserts while insectoid Thri-Kreen satisfy their taste for blood. Dwarves labor at projects beyond the scope of men, and feral halflings lie in ambush. Athas is a land of deadly magic and powerful psionics that offers promise of glory or even of survival. Those who do not have the cunning to face life on Athas will surely perish - leaving nothing but bones bleached white under the blistering rays of the DARK SUN' Please be aware that the legacy content discussed on this podcast does not reflect the values of the hosts or of D&D today. Our hosts, Fiona and Hamilton, continue their journey of the Inner Planes by visiting the Energy Planes of Positive & Negative. As their name implies, they're composed not of matter, but of energy. Both places are difficult to define, but their effects are inescapable. The plane of Positive Energy is said to be the mother of all life. That's because the radiation of this bright realm gives animation to all living things. The plane of Negative Energy is an everhungering maw that seeks to quench the fires of life wherever they bum. It gives power to the ranks of the undead and other such mockeries of life, but the place is anathema to all. Book discussed: 'The Inner Planes (2e)' published by Wizards of the Coast (1998). Blashfield and James M. Ward and published by TSR in 1987, Faerie Mound of Dragonkind is part of the CATACOMBS gamebook series which, according to the blurb, represents the ultimate challenge in role-playing adventure. Analytical powers would be tested to the utmost as readers must decide how to deal with the weird and wondrous creatures and artefacts they encounter, using a simplified d12 rule system. At the dawn of mankind, faeries could be found everywhere, but with the introduction of cold iron, these enchanted creatures were forced to gather their magical essences in ancient places of power, wrapped in magical illusions. Once every thousand years, the Mound is revealed in all its splendor. It is at these times only that mortals can cross over into the dangerous world of ancient magic and power that is the last stronghold of the enchanted realm. In FAERIE MOUND OF DRAGONKIND, you enter the world of a visual maze, full of surprises both delightful and deadly! You come on a quest, as a fighter or a bard. But to complete your quest, you must explore the maze of enchanted chambers of the faerie mound, where fearsome creatures lurk behind every corner and magic is everywhere! A unique feature of this book is a roguish Elf, who may either help you or hinder you and may be hiding on any page!' Book: Faerie Mound of Dragonkind by Jean F. Blashfield and James M. 31 Jul 2024 | Bonus: So what do you want to do? Proactive Roleplaying! | 00:59:20
Show notes This week, Fiona and guest co-host Liz sit down and chat about 'The Game Master’s Handbook of Proactive Roleplaying: Guidelines and strategies for running PC-driven narratives in 5E adventures' by Jonah and Tristan Fishel, writers and longtime RPG players. As part of the 'Game Master's Books' series published by Media Lab Books, this book suggests that by putting the players and their characters in the driver’s seat, every battle has tension, every faction has a function and every session is high-stakes (and an absolute blast), so GMs can sit back and simply put giant goal- (and soul-) crushing roadblocks in their way. The Game Master's Handbook of Proactive Roleplaying bio: 'Is your roleplaying in a rut? Flip the table and try something new! Proactive roleplaying will re-energize your players – and your game.' 'This unique new RPG guidebook is designed to transform gameplay in ways that empower players to create their own motivations and goals, then proactively pursue them – in effect, guiding the narrative of their characters, rather than having the Game Master do it.' 'Traditional TTRPGs have for decades relied on reactive player responses in order to function. In other words, there is an evil wizard out to take over the world. The player characters are good, therefore it’s their duty to go stop the wizard.' 'Game play then follows a traditional storytelling narrative of protagonists working to return their world back to the status quo, or an improved position. Bad guy makes a move, good guys move to stop him. The problem with this style of gameplay is that players are always reacting to what’s put in front of them.'
