"How have we never heard off this DCOM?" Is the #4 question we ask ourselves. Preceded by is the math mathing, is the science sciencing, and is the logic logicing?

The answers to all of the above might be no, but this movie just might be a yes! Find out as we discuss Invisible Sister in this week's episode of Disney Deviants!

We strutted our way through the streets of Barcelona to bring you amazing insights as to the best songs, the best gossip, and answer the question that's been on everyone's mind since 2006. It's a bird! It's a plane! Wait...it's world renowned chef Bobby Flay? That's right this week we shook things up and watched Eddie's Million Dollar Cook Off and we have never been more excited about purple goo!

If you'd like to know who to thank for jumping the gun, it's one of our faithful listeners, Shai! We may also have completely forgotten that the entire plot of this movies hinges on blatant and excessive misogyny 😅 Hey, you win some, you lose some.

Neigh Neigh Neigh!

That's horse for "Whoa is it already time for another Disney Deviants episode?" If you haven't guessed already, we watched the critically acclaimed Horse Sense starring every single member of the Lawrence Brothers dynasty. (Joey, Andrew and Matt) And yes we are counting Matt's cameo as *reads note* Cowboy in Airport.

This movie is as close to DCOM Western as we're ever going to get, and has us asking ourselves, "Are we sure this is a Disney Channel Original Movie?" The scenery is delectable, the acting is on point, and the horses are wild (in every sense of the word)! So what didn't we like about the movie? You're gonna have to listen to find out!

Join as we digest every aspect of this slow burn revenge flick(?) in this week's episode of Disney Deviants - Horse Sense!

18 May 2022Descendants 301:04:31

Send us a text

Damn Mal! Back at it again with the hiding major parts of your identity from the supposed love of your life!

That's right, we watched the final(?) installment of The Descendants DCOM series, Descendants 3, starring, Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, Cameron Boyce (R.I.P.) and Booboo Stewart. And we had so many questions (and very few answers) like:

  1. How'd your budget get bigger and then wigs got worse?
  2. Are these 4 leads even friends?
  3. What is the point of Jay's character?
  4. IS THAT WORLD RENOWNED CHOREOGRAPHER JAMAL SIMS???
  5. And last but not least, You popped off on the choreo Kenny!!!

Ok that last one wasn't a question, but it needed to be said! Join us as we sing Kenny's praise, to see if we're singing about anyone else in this week's episode of Disney Deviants, Descendants 3!

13 Jul 2022The Color Of Friendship01:02:31

Send us a text

This is possibly the realest movie Disney Channel has ever made. And we aren't just referring to the fact that it is based on a true story. Disney really gave us a lesson in apartheid, blatant racism, and iconic 70s looks. TBH, we're not sure which if those was the most beneficial.  T

31 Aug 2022The Bloods Trials by N.E. Davenport01:47:58

Send us a text

Textual Deviants is back and better (read: rustier) than ever!

In our much anticipated return to our textual roots, we tackle a listener suggestion, The Blood Trials by N. E. Davenport and from us to y'all, Mrs. Davenport might have just ate! Don't let the stunning cover or description fool. This is no YA novel, more like Adults ONLY!

We follow Ikenna, our protagonist, (and fellow vaguely Naija gyal!) as she tries her best to figure out who killed her grandfather in the novel with a sci-fi/fantasy landscape. To make matters worse, the only way she will be able to figure it out is to pledge to participate in the Praetorian soldier (blood) trials, in order to get closer to the people she believes ordered the hit. Even worse? She has to manage to hide her blood gifts all while desperately trying to remain alive herself.

Dive into Ikenna's world of the Mareenians and Khanaians with us as we discuss this weeks book deviation, The Blood Gifts by N.E. Davenport!

14 Sep 2022Alley Cats Strike00:58:30

Send us a text

It's a cat eat cat world in the competitive world of Middle School (High School?) basketball...I mean bowling.  West Appleton has just won the face off against East Appleton tying up the years long bid competition for the mighty Apple. And now, the deciding contest must take place in a bowling alley. While watching this semi forgotten Disney Channel Original Movie, Adaeze and Taiwo find themselves faced with these nail biting questions:

1. When did bowling fall out of favor with the general American public?
2. Did this movie restore bowling's relevance in the zeitgeist?
3. How little can you consider the feelings of your friends, while maintaining best friendship?
4. What IS the Alley Cat Strike?

To all these questions, a simple answer must suffice..."Wouldn't you like to know"?

3. Where can we find our very own Mummy friend to have and to hold?
4. Is Disney extolling the virtues of Latch Key Childhoods?

All that and more in this episode

30 Nov 2022How To Build a Better Boy00:58:15

Send us a text

***This episode contains our upcoming Christmas lineup. Thank you so much for all the wonderful suggestions***

This week, we took a deep dive into a newer DCOM that somehow still feels nostalgic? In How To Build A Better Boy, Gabby and Mae take on a challenge that is almost Pixel Perfect. However, as this experiment comes crumpling around them, we find ourselves asking important questions like
1.  When will The Iconic China Anne McClain grace our screens again?
2. How many military men does it take to arrest 2 teenagers?
3. Is that REALLY the perect boy?
4. Will we actually answer any of these questions in the episode

All this and more on Disney Deviants

07 Dec 2022Falling For Christmas01:12:03

Send us a text

This week, Adaeze and Taiwo begin their holiday deviations with Falling For Christmas. Lindsay Lohan is back on our screens, but is her appearance taking us back to simpler times? In this Christmas movie, Netflix attempts to come for Hallmark's neck. Bringing about some very important questions like... How many tropes is too many tropes? Is it possible to hold yourself hostage? What do you get when you cross a big city girl and an heiress? And most importantly, are outtakes finally making a triumphant comeback? All this and more on this week's episode of Disney Deviants.

25 Jan 2023Z-O-M-B-I-E-S 301:10:35

Send us a text

This week we watched the finale of the Disney Channel Original Series Z-O-M-B-I-E-S. This iteration of Disney's new "classic" takes on Aliens, and boooooyyyy, do we have questions.
1) How does one REALLY apply for college?
2) If you replace a whole teenage girl with a pile of junk metal and a screen, and no one is there see it, will it go unnoticed?
3) Who has been led to believe that Zombies, werewolves, and Aliens are real based on this Movie?
4) Is the love story between shrimpy the mascot, and eel, potentially the most important love story in the franchise?
5) How does. Addison's mom keep that wig so laid?

These questions (maybe the answers as well?) and more, on this episode of Disney Deviants

We know we promised Stepsister From Planet Weird, but hopefully you can forgive us for this deviation, because we got to sit down and talk with the director of the ENTIRE Z-O-M-B-I-E-S  franchise!

After a DM to our Disney Deviants Instagram, we saw that Paul had not only listen to our last episode, but that he had was totally game from coming on the podcast to discuss all of the questions, comments, and concerns we had about the final (?) movie in the franchise. And our chaotic selves of course said yes!

So sit down, relax, and make sure you grab a cup  of tea, because we spill of our ours in this week's episode of Disney Deviants!

Will Adaeze ever get over these blank pages? (Hint: she doesn't). Will Taiwo ever truly teach Adaeze how to pronounce Michaelides? Did Alicia Berensen kill her husband? And who among us will drop a huge secret about their involvement with the Hunger Games Trilogy (saga? idk)? Who knew that stories about uprisings could be such a pleasant distraction from our current state of affairs?

Join us as we take a necessary departure from our regular schedule to "read" and discuss The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes!

01 Jul 2020The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett Parts 1-300:54:46

Send us a text

In this episode we are transported through time and space to Mallard, Louisiana in the 1950s. Identical twins start off life on the same path but end up on complete opposite ends of the racial spectrum. Brit Bennett takes us on a rollercoaster of emotions and as we talk our way through it all we find our selves asking all of the important questions, like: How many takes of our intro do we have to do before we get it (semi) right? What does The Vanishing Half have in common with British comedy fave Sex Education? And last, and probably most important, are children parrots or people? Join us as we come together with Brit Bennett to say BLACK TRANS LIVES MATTER in this weeks episode, The Vanishing Half Pt. 1!

08 Jul 2020The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett Parts 4-601:15:12

Send us a text

In Part 2 of The Vanishing Half we finish up our thrilling ride on the Vignes emotional rollercoaster and are left speechless. Except for our weekly questions of course! Will our computers ever make it through an episode without technical issues? Is Brit Bennett a literary goddess fully deserving of her place on the throne of the NYT Best Sellers list? And last and certainly most important, WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK KENNEDY AND FRANTZ???

We just took a DNA test, turns out we still hate Stella in The Vanishing Half Pt. 2!

In this week's episode we dip our toes in the waters of (trill) rrrrromance. Our girl Chloe Brown is getting a life and we are here to check her list twice! And of course we have some questions.

1. What does the cat say? (Hint: it's never miaow)
2.What's the male equivalent of a manic pixie dream girl?
3. When will we get to the meaty softcore porn we know we are all here for!

Join us as we cross the first half of Get a Life, Chloe Brown off our list 😉!

This week we finally get what we've all been waiting for, a deep dive into the lusty waters of softcore porn! - *cough* We mean Get a Life, Chloe Brown! Honestly Chloe's managed to actually manifest a life through the power of lists, so we thought we might create one of our own!

  1. Camping with the person of your dreams and getting. It. On.
  2. Learn to play the guitar strictly through the power of osmosis.
  3. MORE SMUDGE
  4. An Amber Riley led HBO adaptation!!!

Find out if we get everything we wished for and if we think this is the cat's Miaow as we cross the second half of Get a Life, Chloe Brown off our list 😉!

Wondering what read to buy next? Don't worry, we've got you covered. Well, we've got US covered, but we would love it if you join us. 29 Jul 2020Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Book 1): The Lightening Thief by Rick Riordan01:07:10

Send us a text

Picture it. It was the summer of 2005. School had just let out and you find yourself at your local library borrowing the hottest book of the summer, Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief. Afterwards, you jam to Hilary Duff's latest album Most Wanted featuring hits like So Yesterday and Wake Up as you head to Rita's opening day. You are in bliss. Or maybe you're a Taiwo who somehow missed out on the existence of this series until the *movie that shall not be named* came out in the year that we shall never talk about again. (Or shall we?)

Either way, join us as we travel back to the days of our youth when life was as simple as fighting a Greek god...or two.

05 Aug 2020My Sister The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite01:21:17

Send us a text

These two Naija babes are finally reading a book by another Naija gyal! This week's read sees us going back to our motherland in the comedy (?) My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite. This one is really interesting, interesting, interesting for it's content. It also brings up some questions about us, like, which one of us would help our sister cover up a murder? Dive in as we uncover some childhood trauma!

12 Aug 2020Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer01:24:47

Send us a text

The book we all begged for in 2008 is finally here! Is it 12 years too late or right on time? Does Edward watching Bella sleep age like fine wine or sour vinegar? And above all, is 672 pages ENOUGH pages to recapture our fading youth? That's for us to know and you to find out.

Join us as we answer the call of the undead and (no longer) glittery in this week's episode, Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer!

*During our reading of the reviews we discovered that the Quileute Tribe (depicted thoughout the entirety of the saga) to this day had never been given any compensation from Stephenie Meyer or the Twilight Saga franchise despite being heavily depicted and having their culture and legends appropriated for the benefit of the franchise. The tribe is currently trying to move some of their buildings out of the Tsunami zone that they are located in and are crowdfunding to help. Please find their link below where you can learn more and/or donate if you have the means. Thank you!

19 Aug 2020Circe By Madeline Miller01:07:21

Send us a text

Are you ready for the #MeToo era read you didn't know you needed (or in T's case, were reading?)

This week we read the rich,  (dollar bill bookmarks anyone!) imaginative retelling of the lesser known Greek witch, Circe by Madeline Miller. In this read, Miller questions the portrayals of women in Greek myths and leads us to ask some questions of our own, such as:

Why is the theme of the week #DisappointedAndUnsurprised? (Hint: starts with m ends with en)

What character does T see as a little, blue man?

And which characters do we #ship?

Find out the answer to these questions and why we may have subconsciously changed a lyric in our theme song as we discuss Circe by Madeline Miller!

This one truly had us in our feelings, a stress read like no other. Grab your best anxiety reducer and buckle in for a crazy ride!

It's the Wednesday before Labor Day, so you know what time it is? It's the beginning of Back to School month!

In this quite perfectly timed #WaybackWednesday we start our month of YA reads with The Rest of the Story by a Deviant fave, Sarah Dessen!

In this episode we pinpoint 5 (6?) things that make a quintessential Sarah Dessen novel. So you know we had to list the 5 things that make this a quintessential TD episode.

  1. "Interesting, interesting,  interesting."
  2. "And another thing too."
  3.  Potentially blowing out your headphones (we're sorry. We're so so sorry)
  4.  And finally, confidently stating a specific number of things and always having one less.
  5. ......wait, what was number 5 again?

It's the end of those 🎶summer nights 🎶, so catch us soaking in the end of the season in the shores of Lake North (or is it North Lake?) with The Rest of the Story by Sarah Dessen!

Welcome back to another episode of Textual Deviants where the format is made up and the schedule doesnt matter!

This week we ferociously, speed read Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson! After reading a particularly derisive 1 star review, we just HAD to tell [NAME REDACTED] just how wrong they are, point by point.

Enjoy the takedown of the century (or at least of the hour), with our 5-star (plz rate us) rebuttal of a 1-star review as we discuss Tiffany D. Jackson's Allegedly!

Welcome back to another chaotic episode of Textual *voice cracks*.

We are more than halfway through YA month and this week we had the immeasurable pleasure of reading a book with the sexiest cover to date, Incendiary by Zoraida Cordova!

It's the Badass women for me. It's the diversity for me. It's the potential for sequels month for me.

Let us know what it is for you and if we should make this theme theme a thing thang 😉 as we discuss Incendiary by Zoraida Cordova!

Demons & demon hunters
Dated gender roles
Werewolves
Cucumber sandwich shaming

And a Star Wars

What's a Star Wars you ask? Well it's when your two main characters have a steamy (debatable) romance only to find out they're brother and sister!

Listen to us work through the traumatic joy of this week's read, City of Bones by Cassandra Clare(y)!

We're just two Naija gyals, standing in front of the world, asking you to forgive us for changing up our format / putting out a late announcement yet again! (We've been very bad

30 Sep 2020Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson01:03:58

Send us a text

We are closing out #YAMonth with a throwback to 2005 Taiwo's bookshelf. This week we read Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson. Yes, that James Patterson.

We've read five books over five weeks and we've truly grown as "young adults". I mean, we FINALLY completed our first ever #TightTwo! But we also return to our old ways of horrible memories for names. Well you win some, you lose some.

Find out what caught us off guard, whose brain is just worms, and what IKYFL stands for. Don't mind us as we dot our Ts and cross our Is in this week's episode Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment by James Patterson!

Send us a text

It's October which means we are starting our month of #Spooks🎃 and let us tell you, we are starting it off RIGHT, but our sound is all WRONG. (Forgive us listeners for one of us *cough"taiwo*cough* has sinned.)

For our first episode of October, we read the truly #SpooksMcGooks I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid.

Find out which one of us had to sleep in her sister's bed after reading this and which one of us is an ITOET savant. Listen to us work through all the details of the chaotically unnerving I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Iain Reid!

14 Oct 2020I'm Thinking of Ending Things By Charlie Kauffman01:07:15

Send us a text

Today is the first of our  book to movie reviews and we could not be more excited to be starting it off with I'm Thinking of Ending Things by Charlie Kaufman!

No we do not have that wrong. This movie is credited as having been WRITTEN by Charlie Kaufman and not Iain Reid.

If you thought Iain Reid's ITOET was weird, than you better tighten your bootstraps because you're in for a real ride.

Join us as we discuss this Netflix "arthouse fil-um", its strengths (*cough*dance*cough), its weaknesses (*cough*dance*cough*) and everything in between!

Welcome back for another chaotic episode of a differently scheduled ♫Textual Deviants, uh , uh , uh —♫

THEME SONG UNDER CONSTRUCTION

This week we are joined by long time friend of the podcast, first EVER guest, and host of her own podcast, Depp Impact, Jenna Kuerzi! (http://www.jennakuerzi.com/) as we discuss Coraline Directed by Henry Selick (NOT TIM BURTON) of Nightmare Before Christmas fame!

We learned a lot while watching Coraline and we'd love to share a little bit of it with all of you!

A Bobinsky is what your big toe does when the foot is stimulated.
Nudity in a children's (?) movie is okay as long as it's extra clothed women wearing very naked bodysuits.
Banana slugs make great mustaches for impromptu photo shoots.
Vermillion is scarlet red (read: ORANGE)
Tim Burton knows exactly one POC
Puce is the color of flea droppings(???)
And Coraline is perhaps the most body positive movie of 2009.

Learn with us in the most #iconique episode of Textual Deviants to ever grace your ear drums!

04 Nov 2020Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple01:10:10

Send us a text

It's election day and we need a really big distraction from the anxiety of it all. So why not dive into the anxiety of the titular character in this weeks read Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple!

In this absurdist (our word) satire (their word) we are thrown into the life of Bernadette Peters world renowned actress, Broadway belter, and all around believable lady and ‐‐ *checks notes* -- sorry Bernadette Fox, LA transplant, renowned architect, no waste queen and all around hater of people. We always get those two confused!

Let's make a deal with a god that we dont believe in about this election cycle. If our candidate wins (do we even have to say who?) We wont ask anymore pertinent questions like:

How are Avril Lavigne and Bernadette Fox related?

What year is too late to act like fax communication between friends is plausible?

What year did Zune stop production?

What kind of podcast are we? (Note: We are NOT a cussing podcast)

Honestly, we could use a nice relaxing cruise to the Atlantic right about now....you know, Bee might have been on to something. Brace the high, dry winds of Antarctica with us in this week's episode, Where'd You Go, Bernadette by Maria Semple!

11 Nov 2020Where'd You Go Bernadette Directed by Richard Linklater01:05:26

Send us a text

One week ago, we discussed Where'd You Go Bernadette on election day, and it was a wonderful distraction. Today we are discussing it's movie companion, by the same name, directed by Richard Linklater!

We made a deal with a god we dont believe about our candidate winning (yay striking down fascism!), so unfortunately that means no more witty questions like:

What do you get when you cross a filmmaker with a distinctly realistic aesthetic (almost to the point of absurdity) with a satirical, semi-commentary and absurd characters?

The answer?

Well you'll have to listen to us discuss Where'd You Go Bernadette directed by Richard Linklater to find out!

The highly anticipated  sequel episode that everyone has been begging for is finally here! And by sequel we mean we read an unrelated book by the same author....Oops

That's right, we read Tiffany D. Jackson's latest release, Grown, and we've got the ca-yute merch to prove it!

The book is short, but the material is heavy. And we talk about all of it (or at least as much we can fit in under 1.5hrs)

Listen to this episode to hear amazing TD podcast hits such as:

"Allegedly" (not to be confused with the book of the same name)

It Could Have Been Me

Manufactured Chaos

Men Ain't Shit!

And many more!

Extra, extra! Read (& listen) all about it in this week's episode, Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson!
