Today Dr. David Shirazi joins us to discuss the relationship between TMJ, Sleep Apnea, and Depression.

He discusses how TMJ (temporomandibular) disorder relates to sleep apnea. Furthermore, Dr. Shirazi deep dives into how many disorders are related to TMJ disorder. Disorders including depression, anxiety, sleep apnea, diabetes and TMJ are related, and often co-exist in a patient.

With his extensive background and knowledge in treating TMJ disorders, Dr. Shirazi explains tips for accurately diagnosing co-existing disorders in your patients.

MORE ABOUT DR. DAVID SHIRAZI:

Dr. Shirazi graduated from Howard University College of Dentistry, in Washington D.C. in 2000 and earned a Masters degree in Oriental Medicine from SAMRA University in 2006 and is also a board licensed Acupuncturist.
He has completed over 2000 hours of continuing education in TMD and facial pain, craniomandibular orthopedics, and sleep disordered breathing.  He has
also completed a hospital mini-residency in oriental medicine at the China Beijing International Acupuncture Training Centre which is the only organization the World Health Organization (WHO) has authorized to teach
internationally on acupuncture and herbology, and another at Kyung Hee University and Medical Center, the top medical hospital and medical research school in Korea.

In 2011 through 2016, he became a board licensed RPSGT; Sleep Technologists are licensed to conduct and score sleep studies. He is the founder of the Bite, Breathe and Balance Podcast, dedicated to the
multidisciplinary approach to treating craniofacial pain and sleep disorders in adults and children. Dr. Shirazi is the director of state of the art private practices, The TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre of Conejo Valley and Los Angeles, that are limited to the treatment of TMD, craniofacial pain, Sleep breathing disorders, and craniomandibular orthopedics.

His practice is part of the TMJ and Sleep Therapy Centre international family, one of over 65 Centres throughout the world, and is located in the beautiful hills of Thousand Oaks and Brentwood CA. Personally, Dr. Shirazi enjoys hiking and camping in the state parks, traveling, and speaking. He is married to the love of his life Kimberly Shirazi, and have welcomed their first son, Maximus. They live in the Santa Monica Mountains, where they are very close to nature.

Dentists in Poland have set up a network of practices that are offering free urgent dental care to refugees from the War in Ukraine. There are now more than a million refugees. Poland, because of its proximity to Ukraine, already has 505,000, with more on the way.

Today, Dr. Richard Simpson of Holland Healthcare, discusses the Ukraine Refugee Virtual Clinic and recruiting much needed dentists and licensed physicians to aid in the War in Ukraines' Refugees.

Dr. Richard Simpson is a Pediatric Dentist practicing in Alabama, and is the chief clinical officer at Holland Health Care. He has been involved with national and state advocacy groups to improve oral health.

Dr. Simpson has become very active in past few years on Linked-in. He now focuses on cross sector networking and leveraging contacts in the TeleDentistry and TeleHealth fields.

Almost 50 dentists so far are offering care to Ukrainians.

Obtaining quality radiographs would be easy if all our patients had big mouths, nice wide arches, high palettes, and straight teeth.  However, we often have crowded arches, malposed and rotated teeth, touching gag reflexes, pushy tongues, chubby cheeks, and patients who tend to be exasperated or uncooperative.   To make things even more difficult the wired sensors are smaller, harder, bulkier, more uncomfortable than film and black or dark blue.  To top it off dental assistants that have been trained on the job "learned" to take dental X-rays in one weekend.  They were never taught the secrets of shadow casting, or bisecting.   My mission is to help.   

I've been a speaker, but would like to focus more of my attention to in person coaching.

My co-worker Darlene is an RDAEF with over 40 years in dentistry.  She and I want to spend more time in dental offices coaching dental assistants in all aspects of their job.

Janet Simpson, is a registered dental assistant in San Diego California.  She began her career in 1989 working in general and pediatric dental offices, but found her niche in education.  Currently, she is a speaker, consultant and owner of Dental Fundamentals Continuing Education.   she enjoys her roles as dental assistant, dental assisting instructor, clinic coordinator, and team trainer.  She has presented "Rad Refresher" at the California Dental Association CDA presents multiple times, as well as smaller meetings and various study clubs.  She is also an experienced trainer in regulatory compliance and California infection control requirements.

Dr. Short has over 20 years of experience in dentistry and over 17 years in endodontics. He is a member of the Fellow International College of Dentist, a graduate of the ADA Institute of Diversity In Leadership Program, and an ADA Success Speaker. He is also an expert consultant in endodontics to the Georgia Board of Dentistry and an assistant clinical professor at The Dental College of Georgia in Augusta.  Dr. Short is an independent national lecturer and is endorsed by the American Association of Endodontists speaker’s bureau. Dr. Richard Huot is the founder of Beachside Dental Consultants, Inc., and started his consulting firm in 2004.
He has lectured at many meetings on topics such as leadership issues, dental practice career transitioning, common sense office design, proper insurance coding, financial planning, and buying/selling dental practices. His articles have been featured in Dental Products Report, Dental Economics, Dentistry Today, Dental Practice Report, ADA News, AGD Impact, and other state dental journals.


Dr. Huot retired from the USAF Reserve Dental Corps, after 30 years of military duty, and his last assignment was as the Commander of the 920th Aeromedical Staging Squadron at Patrick AFB, Florida. Dr. Huot was a private practice owner from 1985 to 2008, and still practices clinical dentistry today on a per diem basis.


Dr. Huot served on the ADA ADPAC board from 2008-2012 and was Treasurer in his last year. He then was on the ADA Council of Government Affairs and is also a member of the ADA Standards Committee for Dental Informatics (SCDI) and serves as chair of the Council on Insurance and Retirement Plans (CMIRP).


A past president of the Maine Dental Association in 1994, and the 2006 President of the Atlantic Coast District Dental Association in Florida, Dr. Huot is a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, the Academy of General Dentistry, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He served on the Florida Dental Association Board of Trustees and as ADA Vice President for two years. Dr. Huot was recently appointed to the AGD Council on Legislative and Government Affairs.


He graduated from the College of Financial Planning in 1996, and is currently enrolled in the Chartered Financial Consultant program at the American College of Financial Services.

Major life events (such as death, divorce, and job loss) and even conflict can create feelings of shock, grief and leave us struggling to cope. These events have a significant effect on the dental team and our patients.

With 30-years in clinical dentistry and 21 years as a National Spokesperson for the American Dental Association, Kimberly Harms D.D.S. has seen the importance of positive communication, management of conflict and relationship building firsthand. Her goal is to help untangle problems and support those with grief issues by sharing that accumulated knowledge with seminar attendees.

Dr. Harms practiced dentistry as an enlisted officer in the U.S. Public Health Service, as a dental associate, and for most of her career as co-owner of a private practice in Farmington, MN. She developed a pilot project for the State of Minnesota to deliver care to developmentally disabled patients living in group homes which is still going strong 28 years later.

As National Spokesperson and Consumer Advisor for the American Dental Association, Dr Harms has appeared on their behalf on the Today Show, CNN, Fox News, National Public Radio and network affiliates such as CBS, NBC, and ABC. David grew up in the dental lab industry and started and exited two national labs, built the industry’s first cloud-based management software and served as an interim VP of Operations for ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers, before starting 8&9 Consulting in 2019.

In 2000, David started Dale Dental specialized in manufacturing the latest and most high-tech dental restorations exclusively for dental labs. In this time David began building what would become the industry’s first cloud-based lab and practice management software.

In just a few year, Dale Dental became the world’s largest dental lab to labs, serving as a technology supercenter for over 5,000 dental labs. In 2014 David started Concert Dental Labs which he grew at over a 55% CAGR with industry leading gross margins. In addition, the proprietary web-based software he built, was responsible for over 90% of Concert’s cases being entered online by its doctors, an industry record for conventional impression cases.

David sold the software in 2017 and sold Dale Dental and Concert Dental Labs in 2018. 

In 2019 David started 8&9 Consulting to work with dental practices, DSO’s, dental labs, medical device manufacturers and other medical practice types, to help overcome challenges in their business, find new opportunities and improve sales, operations and profits. 

David served on the board of the Young Entrepreneurs Organization (YEO) as President and various other board seats over five years. Joseph P. Crowley, D.D.S., a general dentist practicing in Cincinnati, Ohio, is the new president of the American Dental Association (ADA). Dr. Crowley, who was elected president-elect last year, was recently installed as president during a meeting of the ADA House of Delegates in Atlanta, Georgia. He will lead the 161,000-member organization that is America’s leading advocate for oral health.

Dr. Crowley previously served as the Seventh District trustee to the ADA House of Delegates. Dr. Crowley has served the profession in a number of ways during his four decades as an ADA member, including as chair of the Council on Government Affairs in 2008-2009. He is also active in the Ohio Dental Association, and served as its president in 2005-2006. Dr. Crowley was the president of the Cincinnati Dental Society in 1996.

Dr. Crowley is a member of several professional dental organizations, including the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, The Ohio State University College of Dentistry Alumni Advisory Board, the L.D. Pankey Institute Alumni Association, the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the Academy of General Dentistry.

In 2013, Dr. Crowley earned the Ohio Dental Association Distinguished Dentist Award. He also received the Ohio Dental Association Achievement Award in 2001, the Cincinnati Dental Society Meritorious Service Award in 2007 and the Ohio Pierre Fauchard Distinguished Dentist Award.

After finishing dental school at The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in 1976, Dr. Crowley returned to his hometown of Cincinnati, where he has practiced general dentistry for more than three decades. He’s been involved in the community, and has been particularly active at LaSalle High School, his alma mater. He was named to the school’s athletic hall of fame in 2009. Dr. Crowley and his wife Pauletta have been married 43 years and have three children and seven grandchildren.
