30 May 2022Impossibly Old Artifacts - Michael Cremo, Forbidden Archaeology01:40:08

How do you explain a gold chain pulled from a 300 million year old lump of coal, a perfectly crafted brass bell pulled from a mine in the Appalachians, delicately inscribed stone obelisks found deep in gold mines, hammers embedded in impossibly ancient rock? Archaeology can't... which is why most researchers disregard these findings in order to maintain a 300,000-year-old timeline for modern humans. But Michael Cremo is not your typical archaeologist, and he isn't willing to ignore the compelling evidence for a much stranger, deeper history of human emergence. Join us as we explore the world of forbidden archaeology and establish an alternative theory for human emergence.

13 Jun 2024Transhumanism: Path to Transcendence or Extinction? - Dr. Miklos Lukacs, USMP - DemystifyPod #25602:00:47

Dr. Miklos Lukacs is a Research Professor of Science and Technology Policy at the University of San Martin de Porres in Lima, Peru. He also happens to be one of the leading critics of transhumanism, which he defines as the technologically-driven push for super longevity, super intelligence, and super wellbeing. Lukacs argues that this campaign threatens the historical relationship between humans and technology, where our tools serve us, rather than the other way around. He worries that by placing such an outsize importance on external tools, we allow ourselves to be molded into an entirely new form that emerges not from bottom-up evolutionary forces, but from an external, top-down locus of control. Our conversation lays out the basics of what Lukacs identifies as transhumanism, and then turns to an exploration of how to balance progress with tradition. 23 Mar 2023Strange Behaviors of Humans and Magnets - Arnie Benn, Quicycle02:27:29

Arnie Benn is a writer, composer, designer whose recent work has been focused on the behavior of humans and magnets. In his upcoming book, the Animal in the Mirror, Benn explores the evolutionary patterns still at play in the human mind, with an emphasis on the animalistic aspects that tend to govern cognitive processes. For the Quantum Bicycle Society, he has been exploring material explanations for magnetism as a function of atomic orbitals shape. We talk about music, the endless project of maintaining the landscape of the soul, cosmological mysteries, and material explanations for atomic phenomena. 24 Mar 2024Are the Pyramids Made of Synthetic Stone? - Dr. Michel Barsoum, DSPod #23501:48:45

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 Dr. Michel Barsoum is a materials scientist at Drexel University who is the champion of a controversial theory about the great pyramids of Giza, which says the pyramids were not fully carved from natural stone, but were cast from a geopolymer concrete mixture. For decades, Egyptologists have dismissed the notion that the pyramids incorporated any human-made cement-like materials. But Barsoum's team at Drexel University has uncovered startling new evidence from advanced microscopy analysis of pyramid samples. We talk to him about becoming entranced with the deep history of Egypt, the process of determining the true nature of a stone, and the open questions about this lost civilization that keep him up at night. What if these discoveries are enough to reshape our understanding of just how advanced and ingenious the ancient Egyptian builders were? 09 May 2022The Crisis of Mass Formation Psychosis - Dr. Mattias Desmet, Ghent University01:06:25

There are three steps to mass formation psychosis, and signs point to the fact that we are living through the very last stage. In this week's conversation, Ghent University's Dr. Mattias Desmet, lays out his psychological theory of how entire societies go insane and fall prey to totalitarianism. What are the conditions that bind people into collectives rather than communities? What causes a woman to hang her own child? Most importantly, we finish on a ray of optimism - about how to balance on the knife's edge of chaos and come out whole on the other side.

07 Mar 2022Natural Selection Isn’t the Whole Story - Dr. Richard Watson, University of Southampton01:06:20

Is competition really all there is? If you take the word of those who insist that natural selection is solely responsible for all of life on earth, then yes. The story goes that competition drives fitness, that maximizing fitness ensures survival, and that survival ensures your traits become fixed in the population. But that's not the whole story. On the other side of the competitive evolutionary coin, there is natural induction, a cooperative process that balances the competitive aspects of natural selection.

On this week's episode, Dr. Richard Watson uses the language of machine learning and artificial intelligence to make a compelling about how our understanding of evolution has misunderstood a key point: The success of individuals and groups depends on cooperation as much as it does on competition.

Scott Turner is a physiologist who has contributed extensively to our understanding of collective intelligence through his work on the behavior of mound building termites. Early in his career he realized that the the textbook explanation for the mounds - that they contributed to temperature regulation of the underlying colony - were woefully incomplete. Through his work, Turner was able to demonstrate that the mounds were actually an integral part of the physiological success of the termites - rather than being a temperature regulating mechanism, the mounds acted as an external lung that was built and maintained by the colony for the express purposes of air filtration and circulation. Downstream of this realization, Turner developed a theory that suggests Darwinism alone - in context of survival of the fittest as the sole driver of the diversity of life - was an incomplete representation of the dynamics of life. We talk about the details of how to rewrite Darwin with a greater emphasis on epigenetics, collective intelligence, and the innate drive of purpose that is particular to life. (00:00:00)

14 Jul 2024Could We Be This Wrong About the Solar System? - Simon Shack, Tychos - DSpod #26403:01:05

Simon Shack is an amateur astronomer, independent researcher, and author. He is the modern champion of an old idea, last held in Tycho Brahe’s time, that the sun is not at the center of the solar system. At first blush, this sounds preposterous, for we have hundreds of years of data that supports the heliocentric Copernican model. But the more you listen, the more your mind melts, because not only does the data fit… it seems to fit better than the conventional model in multiple cases. We spend the conversation unpacking Simon’s model, figuring out what makes it run, the assumptions that make sense, and the loose threads that still need to be woven in. It is a WILD ride, and a truly great exploration of what it means when the same set of observations can produce a radically different interpretation. To follow along visually, check out https://www.tychos.space/ where you can find a copy of Simon’s book and the Tychosium, a stellarium-type simulator built to show the inner workings of the model. 13 Mar 2023Aliens Unlike Us - Dr. Anthony Aveni, Archeoastronomer01:55:02

Dr. Anthony Aveni has been writing about the relationship between humans and our astronomical habitat for more than fifty years. His latest work is inspired by a renewed interest in a more... biological aspect of the cosmos: Aliens. In his new book, Aliens Like Us, he explores why our stories about extraterrestrial visitation are just so, so boring. Rather than imagining a true “other” reaching out and contacting Earth, we seem to just be inventing a capitalist dystopia *in space,* with alien visitors who are just extracting resources or looking for potential experimental subjects. Aveni proposes a more interesting way of looking at it, where instead of just imagining ourselves from the future coming for a visit, we actually come up with something truly interesting.

28 Apr 2024Liquid Sun, Mercury's Precession, Solar Cycle +Q&A - Dr. P.M.Robitaille, DemystiCon '24, DSPod #24302:36:53

This presentation was recorded on April 7th, 2024 at the first DemystifySci conference in Austin TX. Dr. Pierre-Marie Robitaille presents an overview of his multi-decadal quest to understand the material basis of the stars. He also reveals a new theory to explain Mercury's anomalous precession - one that doesn't revert to warped spacetime or mathematical acrobatics. In the process, a clever solution to the mysterious solar cycles of magnetism is revealed, along with a possible mechanism for planetary formation, and sun spot production. Dr. Robitaille has faced an onslaught of attacks from the astrophysical community since he first turned his attention to the sun, perhaps because the material basis of the sun underpins all astrophysical revelations of modern times from black holes to the big bang. Like it or not, the material understanding of the sun appears to be in dire need of revision, and Dr. Robitaille has some unimpeachable concerns about the status quo. 27 Jun 2022Electric Harmonics of Consciousness - Andrés Gómez Emilsson, Qualia Research Institute01:10:33

What is the dividing line between the feeling of sitting in a fluorescently lit cubicle vs flying down the Gold Coast, sea foam in your hair and music in your ears? Obviously almost everything, but where is the root of the subjective emotional experience, the qualia, come from? Andrés Gómez Emilsson, director of research at the Qualia Research Institute, suggests that it lives in the harmonic patterns of the brain. Enjoyable experiences can be understood as consonant resonances, negative ones as dissonant, disorganized ones. He and his colleagues are working on a mathematical model of experience - both the mundane and the transcendent, as they are informed in their work by the hyperbolic geometry of DMT and other psychedelic substances. The goal, at the end of the day, is to create a functional map of human experience so complete that it can help eliminate unnecessary suffering.

06 May 2024The Day Physicists Broke Reality - Dr. Alberto Martinez, UTAustin, DemystiCon '24 DSPod #24502:17:46

Today we're proud to share another talk from DemystiCon '24 with legendary history of physics, Dr. Alberto Martinez from the University of Texas, Austin. This is our second podcast with Dr. Martinez, unpacking the hidden history of the physicists that brought us to the strange quantum foundation for reality where reality stops making sense. In his talk, Dr. Martinez explores a few key moments where things appear to have gone astray around the turn of the 20th century. He then entertains a luxuriously deep Q&A session exploring solution sets, alternative approaches to physics education, and the role of epistemic humility in truly productive science. Professor Martinez is a prolific, and ingenious author and we can't recommend his books enough. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! 12 Sep 2024Meet Your Dark Side - Rex Riepe, Eristics, DSPod #28102:42:06

Rex Riepe is a philosopher who created the Eristics Test as a tool for helping people understand how they process emotions. In his view, emotions are a deeply rational aspect of our personalities that argue for us to take specific actions in three spheres - the self, the world, and society. We discuss the structure that he has developed for understanding the relationship between emotions, how he identified the fundamental building blocks of our interior landscapes, the way that different personalities fit together, and how unexamined emotional strategies can take on a life of their own. 27 May 2024How Much Money Can We Print? - Warren Mosler, Modern Monetary Theory - DSPod #25102:41:36

Warren Mosler is an economist, hedge fund manager, and proponent of modern monetary theory, an economic model that posits fiscal crises are caused by governments not spending enough money. From Mosler’s perspective, the reversal of any recession starts with getting very comfortable with deficit spending. Opponents argue that unchecked spending eventually leads to inflation of the currency and economic collapse, which Mosler argues is impossible as long as you know how money actually works. We dive deep into chartalism, the theory about the creation of money that sits at the heart of MMT, lay out why deficit spending doesn’t have to lead to inflation, and why the Federal Government’s checks will never bounce. 22 Mar 2021What is Good? The Shifting Line Between Wrong & Right - Dr. Cory Clark, U. Penn.01:23:18

Environmentalism, equality, gun laws, lockdowns, these are all areas where people are interested in doing the RIGHT thing, but end up with very different ideas of what that looks like. ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ Join the mailing list http://eepurl.com/gRUCZL ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª

Though it might not look like it on the surface, most of the problems in the human world today are all about how to tell the difference between wrong and right - but most people don’t spend a ton of time trying to figure out if their definitions of those words make sense.

What happens is that a lot of people, when they start to think about the difference between right and wrong, conflate legality and morality. It’s a reasonable confusion - there have been thousands of years of empire on Earth, all of which have asserted that rules about good and bad behavior originate from a supernatural authority, rather than from the individual. But in the modern democratic age, it doesn’t make much sense to look to laws for moral guidance when you’re the ones expected to build the laws of the future.

In the absence of a trustworthy top-down source - whether that’s an institution, God, or nature itself - individuals have to take on the heavy mantle of moral reasoning for themselves. It can be hard, in an atomized isolating world to make sense of this responsibility. The Western world is one of the most permissive societies in the history of your species and it might feel impossible to establish the difference between right and wrong.

In building a moral framework, you really have to look out for motivated reasoning, which means that if you reeeeeaaaally want to do something, it’s going to be really easy to convince yourself that it’s morally okay. That’s because reason is a post-hoc justification that animals generally  give to their actions after the fact. As David Hume, one of Kant’s contemporaries argued, reason is slave to the passions.

Remember, the ethical and legal system in which you live right now isn’t the best version of the world - it’s just the latest greatest adaptation in the aftermath of the church, the rise of reason and nation, and the emergence of the individual. What comes next, humans?

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 How did Christianity go from persecuted sect to the official religion of the Holy Roman Empire in just 300 years? The details of how a sidelined theology became the mainstream have always been obscure but fascinating, an indication of a powerful hold that a spiritual movement exerted in just a few generations. But what if thinking about the emergence of Christianity as a folk tradition is all wrong? What if it sprang, fully formed, from the minds of the Flavian Emperors who wanted to negotiate a lasting peace with the messianic Jews besieging Rome? 29 Aug 2024Push the River, It Pushes Back - Kevin Fedarko, Author - DS Pod 27701:57:08

Kevin Fedarko is a writer, journalist and river guide explores the interface between wilderness and industrialization, most recently through the lens of the Grand Canyon. Fedarko recently published "A Walk In the Park," the story of his somewhat ill-conceived but ultimately successful quest to walk the trail-less expanse of desert wilderness that hides beneath the canyon's rims. We talk about the struggle to tell a story about the Colorado and the canyon that contains it that avoids the conventional morality tale of environment good, technology bad; the astonishing feat of engineering, unseen since the Great Pyramids that holds back Lake Powell; the punishment of untrailed nature; and the mythology of science, man as an island, and the wilderness as something we both crave and fear. 05 Apr 2021Sometimes Science is About Power - Jeremy Rys01:32:14

There are two opposing forces that steer the course of consensus science - quality of thought on one hand, and narrative control on the other. When you’re pushing the limits of human technological ability, should you be worried that modern science is about power? This is a conversation with Jeremy Rys, @Alienscientist on YouTube, about what happens when you hang out on the cutting edge of engineering outside the institutions.

Jeremy has grown a community centered around doing just that - and has started a lab that builds and tests various propulsion prototypes to see what gems may have fallen through the cracks of history. Extreme patience rewards the seeker, for even the most far-out ideas will produce the occasional pearl of wisdom. If researchers on the cutting edge dismissed everything ever labeled as “pseudoscience,” maps of the universe would probably still have Earth at their center.

21 Jun 2021The Modern Creation Myth & Stephen Crothers, Checking the Math 02:37:10

The Modern Creation Myth: At the start of the 20th century, mathematical physics, inspired by a series of instrumental discoveries in astrophysics, attempted to formulate an answer to the question of how the universe came to be. The resulting creation story, the big bang, was hailed as a triumph of reason and cosmic understanding. But was it really something new, or was it just a new version of the oldest myth known to humanity?

19 Apr 2024Techno-futurist SkyGod & UAP Mania - Dr. M.S Delay and Dr. A.V. Bendebury, DSPod #24001:05:49

On the road between Austin and Santa Fe we make a pit stop in Roswell, New Mexico and sit down to make heads or tails of the UAP phenomena. Both of us are skeptics who want to believe, but are cursed by a nature that prevents us from committing to a single perspective. Instead, we dive into the mythological signifiers that surround the phenomenon, the deep yearning for someone who can take care of us, and the psychological innovations that are driven by the fear of living on a planet whose uncaring systems are so immense that they appear wholly beyond our control. 31 Mar 2024Is Water the Dark Matter of Biology? Dr. Michael Hughes, DSPod #23702:40:48

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 Today we are hanging out with our friend Dr. Michael Hughes, a post-doctoral fellow at St. Jude's Research Hospital in Memphis. Michael has a long history of trying to understand the role that water plays in fundamental biological operations from structural assembly to diseases like Alzheimers and Prion disorders. Presently, he is hard at work on a biological theory of everything where water plays out the role of central actor in biological processes from form to consciousness. Our conversation today begins with Michael's journey into the water rabbit hole, exploring the strange way that water structures itself within cells. We work toward an understanding of water as a photo-electrically, an electro-statically sensitive molecule capable of mechanically altering cellular function in response to conscious and external signals. We hope to have Michael back to explore a mutual fascination with the historic interface of spirituality and science by way of Rudolph Steiner and Western esotericism. 23 May 2024Invisible Light Matters - Scott Zimmerman, DSPod #25001:43:49

Scott Zimmerman is a mechanical engineer whose life took a sharp turn when he started to think about the relationship indoor lighting, biology, and solar radiation. He believes that near-infrared light, an invisible component of sunlight from ~800 to 3,000 micrometer wavelengths, is vital for human health. Unfortunately, these are the exact frequencies that our indoor lights and digital devices are incapable of producing. Zimmerman believes that the shift away from incandescent lighting inside of homes has contributes massively to wide-spread hormonal issues in modern population. His mechanism is that our skin, the largest endocrine gland in the universe, is actually a light harvesting organ that uses all the components of light to produce everything from sex hormones to vitamin D. We talk to him about the effect of sunlight on the human body, how he transitioned from mechanical engineering to making lightbulbs, the active harm of blue light, and much more.Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! 21 Dec 2022Universe Conspires to Create Life - Dr. Nick Lane, University College London02:00:37

Is life inevitable? Or are we the unbelievable result of an against-all-odds game that has produced a pair of eyeballs capable of unravelling the mysteries of the universe? Nick Lane, Biochemist at the University College London, is torn. On the one hand, life seems like it has no choice but to occur. The biochemistry of metabolism is completely spontaneous, even in the absence of cells. But complexity? That's a whole different ballgame. We talk about why life on Earth is so strange, why a metabolic theory for life is so good, why Panspermia is so unsatisfying, and how some lab results imply our understanding of metabolism isn't as good as we think.

02 Feb 2021Starting Assumptions are Everything in Science - Dr. Daniel Pauly01:50:52

UCB biologist, Dr. Daniel Pauly on what breaks a scientific argument, the fate of your future seafood, and the limits of controlling one’s environment.

This conversation with Dr. Pauly, spanned many topics - ecology, how change is simultaneously difficult yet necessary, the political situation on Earth, and the strange nature of the human animal. Somewhere in there, we even tried to reckon with the non-material aspects of biology, and how futile it is to treat humans as nothing more than a stack of inanimate atoms. But more than anything else, the trio circled around the tricky question of starting points in science. How can we navigate to an explanation, if we aren’t sure of the phenomenon itself? Take, for example, the Earth’s focus on the causal relationship between man-made CO2 and global temperatures. This assumption about carbon dioxide then leads scientists to the conclusion that reducing its emission will ultimately stabilize the climate. But what if Earthlings have made a mistake, and managing CO2 is a necessary - rather than sufficient condition, for maintaining the wellbeing of the planet? What if there are other, equally insidious threats to humans and their habitat, like pesticides, industrial waste, single-use plastics, or overconsumption? Currently, the conversation about carbon dioxide is totalizing, with only one correct answer - that industrial interventions are necessary to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and that the planet’s climate must be stabilized and prevented from further change. This is one of those cases where getting where you want to go, rather than just getting somewhere, requires more than a mastery of logic. It also requires a careful evaluation of that first assumption - much like navigating by the north star requires actually knowing the north star. When our ability to correctly estimate a reliable starting point is compromised - either by time, politics, or belief - it becomes almost impossible to reach a robust conclusion about anything - whether it’s orienteering, the fate of the climate, or what to have for breakfast.  In the case of science, the systematic process by which we understand material existence, our conclusions can only be sturdy only if we start by considering all of the possibilities. If one refuses to consider a possibility because it complicates a political message or undermines a belief system, no amount of logic can lead to understanding.

03 Aug 2023Rising Waters, Hidden History - Samo Burja, Bismarck Analysis01:54:45

Samo Burja is a research fellow at the Long Now Foundation, the founder of Bismarck Analysis, and originator of the Great Founder theory, who is driven by a simple question. Why have all prior civilizations failed, and how can ours escape the same fate? Our conversation focuses on the ways in which getting good data is almost impossible. Civilizations rise, fall, and their skeletons get scavenged to nourish what comes next. Floods sweep the landscape clean of the best laid plans, and rising sea levels bury the rest. We talk about the future of the academy, the search for buried treasures, and informed searches for long-lost cultures. Note - we had some technical difficulties at the end here, and so the audio for the last 20 minutes is pretty choppy. Apologies! We're working on making sure it doesn't happen again.

01 May 2023Will & Meaning in Living Beings - Dr. Michael Levin, Tufts University01:50:10

Michael Levin is the Vannevar Bush Chair of the Biology department and director the Center for Regenerative and Developmental Biology at Tufts University who is focused on understanding the cellular motivations that govern biological systems. In other words, why do cells create the bodies that they do, and what are the environmental conditions that need to change in order to rewire the bodies that these cells will make? The successes of his work, including permanently altered body plants in planarian flatworms and synthetic bodies from frog skin cells, have significantly challenged our limited perspectives about the extent to which biological systems have wants and needs that can only be satisfied through the fulfillment of an inherent program. We talk new perspectives on the nature of bodies, teleophobia, the game of life, and much more. 19 May 2024Goodbye to Dark Matter - Dr. Raj Gupta, Cosmologist, DSPod #24901:40:19

Dr. Rajendra Gupta is a physics professor at the University of Ottawa who was in the headlines a few months ago for his assertion that the universe might be at least twice as old as we realize. He’s back at the radical reshaping of physics with his latest paper, which proposes that we can do away with dark matter and dark energy. Currently, these invisible substances are thought to make up something like 70-90% of our universe, depending on who you ask. But they’re invisible, undetectable, placeholders for some force or particle that can make the math work out. As an alternative, Gupta proposes modeling the universe with two ideas in mind. One, that the constants of nature are not, in fact, constant and two, that the red light shift seen in the cosmos that is considered to be a signature of expansion is actually the fingerprint of “tired light.” Together, these concepts allow him to recalculate the mechanics of the universe without relying on dark matter and dark energy, which is pretty cool. We talk about the impetus for this work, the meaning of tired light, why expansion isn’t going away any time soon, and the future of physics. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! In the interview that follows this episode we talk at length with Dr. Vaibhav Diwadkar, Wayne State neuropsychiatrist who’s been mapping the deep-brain changes that happen during meditation, deep breathing, and exposure to cold. It doesn’t happen overnight, but it looks like regularly overcoming your emotional aversion to unpleasant tasks can actually change the way you react to everything else that life throws at you.

09 Jul 2023Who Debt Works For - Dr. Michael Hudson (Part 1/2)01:28:34

Dr. Michael Hudson is a professor of Economics at the University of Missouri Kansas City, a political consultant, commentator, and journalist. His career has focused on the study of debt, both external and internal, with an eye on what happens when the exponentially growing debts of a society outstrip the profits from the real economy. We talk about GDP is a false marker of prosperity, the growing influence of the rentier class, fantasies of joining the one percent, and why there’s never going to be another debt jubilee, even if it means the whole system has to fall apart. We continue the conversation about possible solutions in part 2, which will be released on Thursday. In the meantime, check out Dr. Hudson’s books: https://amzn.to/44F6J7n

01 Nov 2020Making Decisions in Times of Great Uncertainty - L. A. Paul, Yale01:01:28

When the world seems like it’s moving too fast for comfort, how do you make decisions? Is it a random walk towards an uncertain future? Is it fear based? Is it by gradually whittling down the set of possibilities to the absolute best option, given what you know now? Is it based on some prediction of what the future might hold?   Chances are, it’s a mixture of all of the above, given the circumstances in which you’re making the choice. Our conversation with L.A Paul, a professor of philosophy and cognitive science at Yale University explores the ways in which humans come to make up their minds when facing high-stakes transformative hurdles.  She also thinks a lot about the effect that those decisions have on our existence in general.   We consider what it means to choose while embracing uncertainty - and how our relationship to this discomfort can be tempered by a deeper understanding of the ways that rationality and morality overlap.  Subscribe & like so we can keep bringing the best conversations!!!  Podcast version available at all usual locations: https://anchor.fm/demystifying-science  L. Why would governments and corporations alike be interested in destabilizing society?

ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ Join the mailing list http://eepurl.com/gRUCZL ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª

Well, it depends on who’s responsible. A state like China, Russia, or Saudia Arabia might be interested in seeing the United States self-immolate to clear the way for their agendas on a global scale. Remember, Rome fell to civil war before being conquered from beyond its walls.

Then there's transnational and domestic actors, who can take many different forms: everyone from coal to big tech is very, very concerned with controlling public narratives. Why? To out-compete one another!

Bad actors to weaponize pessimism by creating exhaustion in the face of global problems. This can decrease voter turnout, decimate political organizing, and can ensure the status quo keeps purring along unchallenged.

These days, the biggest threat hanging over conflicting people’s heads isn’t mutually assured destruction by way of nuclear warheads - it’s an online battle for the heart and soul of the global populace.

08 Jun 2023Göbekli Tepe Out of Younger Dryas Impact - Dr. Martin Sweatman, U of Edinburgh02:01:53

Dr. Martin Sweatman is a chemical engineer at the University of Edinburgh working in both statistical mechanics and archaeoastronomical studies of symbolism at Göbekli Tepe. Our conversation with Dr. Sweatman circles around the missing pieces in our modern narrative of the emergence of civilization after the last glaciation. Might Göbekli Tepe have not been the first city but merely the oldest remaining after an extraordinary cataclysm like the Younger Dryas impact?

08 Sep 2024Transactional Quantum Mechanics - Dr. Ruth Kastner - DSPod #28002:05:32

Dr. Ruth Kastner is a historian of Physics and philosopher of Science who is preoccupied with rational interpretations of quantum mechanics. She serves as the third pole of the transactional quantum mechanics big tent where she, alongside John Cramer and Carver Mead, argue that the apparent mysteries of quantum mechanics can be rationalized by modeling everything from light to gravity as an exchange between atoms. Our conversation explores how she became enamored with this alternative approach to physics, the question of how accurate our models really are when it comes to the subatomic world, why the word "electron" is hopelessly confused, and why moving backwards in space and time aren't as different as they might seem at first glance. 24 Aug 2024Building a State From Scratch - The Venus Project, Simon Michaux, DSPod #27502:26:29

The Venus Project was started in the 1980s by Jacques Fresco and Roxanne Meadows with the aim of showing that it was possible to lead a more human centered existence… as long as you built outside of the capitalist market system. Over the decades, the fortunes of the project have fluctuated - from an initial burst of enthusiasm and action (Meadows and Fresco built almost all the structures on the property by hand themselves) to the grinding reality of what it means to grow a stable and vibrant community, to the immense surge of popularity just as Fresco’s life came to an end. Project members Roxanne Meadows and Nate Dwindiddie come by the show with previous guest Simon Michaux to talk about the failures and successes of the project, and what it might look like when its reborn as the framework for Michaux’s Prometheus Project. 04 Apr 2022First Hand Food - Tamar Haspel, The Washington Post01:03:59

Supply chain collapse and food shortages are on everyone's mind these days. Is the answer to homestead, to prep, to drop out? Most likely not - it's nearly impossible to grow enough food in a small garden to sustain a family. But don't let the garden grow over quite yet - there's more to growing and getting your own food than survival.  Tamar Haspel moved from NYC to the woods and was surprised to find that growing, gathering, and hunting brought her a lot more than food. We discuss how bringing our lives closer to the foods isn't about opting out - it's about community, integration, and growth. More details in her new book, To Boldly Grow. Bernie Taylor is a Naturalist, Archaeoastronomer and Author who has written extensively about the true stories of human evolution, as told through the mythological portrayals in rock art found across Europe and Africa. Through a comparative examination of the rock art found in Spain’s El Castillo cave, at the Rock of Gibraltar, and in South Africa’s Rising Star Cave, Taylor paints a picture of a highly mobile, artistic tribe of humans that completed massive migrations and carried with them the cultural imprint of their celestial maps of meaning. This is our second conversation with esteemed physics professor, Dr. Andrê Koch Torres Assis. Following our earlier discussion of Weber's electrodynamics, we now move into Professor Assis' other passion: Machian dynamics. Mach is perhaps one of the most well-known behind-the-scenes players in the saga of modern physics. Einstein and others often point to Mach as inspiring their ideas but it is often unclear exactly what Mach was proposing when he said that inertia was simply the result of the gravity of the sum total of all of the distant celestial bodies acting upon something locally. In this podcast we explore Mach's ideas through a few simple experiments. Please tell us your thoughts in the comments!

25 May 2023Grand Unified Theory of Consciousness - Dr. Ogi Ogas, Harvard University02:37:12

Dr. Ogi Ogas is a theorist, author, and former visiting scholar at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, where he serves as Project Head for the Individual Mastery Project. Ogas boasts to be in possession of the end theory of consciousness, and he makes a rock solid case for it. You be the judge. Our conversation begins with an introduction to the problems of consciousness and walks through a topological framework for the emergence of increased complexity in biological awareness, culminating in rare cases of self-consciousness, perhaps best exemplified by our own species. We then consider the future evolution of consciousness as humans reach outward for the stars. Tell us what you think! 07 Nov 2022Civilizations in Collapse: Lost City of Teotihuacan - Dr. David Carballo, Archeologist01:14:33

Living at the end of an era, what are the historical lessons can we learn from civilizations in collapse? We speak with David Carballo, Boston University archaeologist and anthropologist about the lost city of Teotihuacan which, at the start of the Common Era, was one of the largest cities in the world, boasting a population of more than 100,000 inhabitants from all corners of Mesoamerica. But all things end, and the capital city of the Teotihuacanos was no exception. Climate change, the collapse of social trust, and rising inequality meant that a few centuries later the builders of the city were buried by history. Studying what remains of the art and artifacts can shed some light on changes we can make in our own time stave off crisis.

26 Jan 2023Fundamental Motions of the Universe - David de Hilster, Dissident Science02:03:36

David de Hilster is the creator of the Dissident Science YT channel and president of the John Chappell Natural Philosophy Society, and he's got a bone to pick with fundamental physics. Fields as the foundational organizing principle don't make any sense. In his view "push" is the only force that makes sense and is produced by four fundamental motions. We talk expanding earth, why Einstein was wrong, what makes great science, and what a new era of mechanistic physics might look like.

03 Apr 2023Sumerian Mesoamerican Connection? - Lance Weaver, Geologist02:56:21

Lance Weaver is a geologist, desert guide, and amateur archaeologist who explores alternative narratives of history since the last ice age. We catch up about new developments in his pole shift research before diving into his paleoarchaeological research on pre-Columbian contact between the Mediterranean and Meso-American cultures. Along the way we wrestle with convergent iconography on both sides of the ocean, bird gods with handbags, anomalous Sumerian artifacts, the true location of Babylon, and the Sons of Light. 11 Apr 2022Decompressing Earth vs. Plate Tectonics - Dr. Marvin Herndon, Geochemist02:31:28

What if plate tectonics isn't settled science? Consensus suggests  Earth's crust has been going through relatively constant supercontinent cycles for as long as there has been a solid crust. There are all kinds of measurements and experiments that seem to confirm this observation - but there are whose who insist that the ancient history of the Earth is not what it seems. Rather than being formed as a molten ball of naked space goo, condensed from the sun's protoplanetary disk, it's possible that the Earth formed hot and gassy - like Jupiter, or the sizzling gas giants that Kepler is regularly finding in close solar orbits.

If that's possible - and our recent conversation with NASA's Don Pettit suggests there is a solid line of evidence here - how does that change our understanding of the Earth? Enter Dr. J. Marvin Herndon, who proposes the history of our planet is a history of decompression. In this episode of the DemystifySci podcast, he takes us through his theory and, along the way, explains everything from the composition of the inner core, to the generation of the magnetic field, to the reason that the surface of the Earth looks the way it does.

27 Dec 2020The Voices in Your Head: How God Becomes “I” - Dr. Brian McVeigh01:08:48

Micky & Quinn meet up with Dr. Brian McVeigh, an anthropologist and mental health counselor, who was once a student of Dr. Julian Jaynes. Jaynes developed the Theory of the Bicameral mind, which seeks to explain the evolution of conscious introspection in humanity. In other words, how did humans come to have a perception of themselves that could be abstracted - the I of the present, and the “me” of future action, cognition, and planning?

Jaynes’ proposed that this shift happened as a result of the bronze age collapse of around 1200 BCE. Prior to this event, he suggests that humans experienced thought as auditory hallucinations, theophanies, which were assumed to be of divine provenience.

In this perspective, ancient human thoughts were understood as the voice of Gods, which regularly appeared to people and helped them navigate decision making. When the bronze-age civilizations of the middle east ended, a new mentality emerged from the wreckage - a unicameral perspective where those voices were integrated into the Self. In this way, the voice that seems to create ideas and inspiration from thin air went from being the word of God to simply being a thought that belonged to the individual.

In his recent work, “The Psychology of the Bible: explaining divine voices and visions”

Dr. McVeigh adds a biblical hypothesis to the Jaynsian picture. He compares the wording in different chapters of the bible, written at different time periods, to illustrate how the voice of god receded from society over time.

We also talked about the future evolution of consciousness in Humans and other animals on Earth, and how the destabilizing effect of an overwhelming information stream might precipitate radical adaptations - much like the Bronze Age Collapse did.

10 Sep 2023Challenging Einstein with ChatGPT - Steven Bryant, Computer Scientist DSPod 18501:50:04

Steve Bryant is an author, researcher and futurist who studies the innovative application of emerging technologies, who has long been curious about the gaps and inconsistencies of general relativity. Armed with Chat GPT with a Wolfram Alpha plugin, Bryant combed through Einstein’s papers, where he discovered key mathematical inconsistencies that invalidate the mathematical basis of Einstein’s most famous theorem. We discuss the simple mathematical proof for what Bryant has discovered, the difficulty of unseating beloved ideas, and what comes after relativity.

14 Mar 2024The Shakespeare Conspiracy - Dennis McCarthy, Michael Blanding, & Derek Hunter - DSPod #23202:34:23

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 The true identity of the person who wrote Shakespeare's plays has long been debated. At least 87 potential authors - from Daniel Defoe to Sir Francis Drake to Anne Hathaway to Sheikh Zubar - have been proposed as candidates, but all of these proposals suffer from the same problem - they don't quite fit the historical facts and so have to be stretched, ill fitting, to even be considered. Only one of the theories seems to make sense in context of history and biography, and it is that the true author of the plays was Sir Thomas North, soldier, lawyer, and translator. Returning guest Dennis McCarthy is joined by journalist Michael Blanding and author Derek Hunter for a conversation about uncovering the true identity of Shakespeare, the life and times of Thomas North, and the tangled thread of politics, philosophy, and liberty that stretches from the printing press to ChatGPT by way of the Old Globe. 04 Jul 2022Element Transmutation, Electric Sun, and Biophotons - Dr. Michael Clarage, Safire Project01:41:38

Dr. Michael Clarage is a founding member of the SAFIRE project who has recently turned his attention to the nascent field of biophotonics, which has him wondering - are we underestimating the effects of electromagnetic radiation on the human body? Is it possible to assemble a DNA sequence with nothing but sound? Is there such a thing as a morphogenic field? This week, Dr. Clarage takes us on a walk through the very edges of science to see if we can figure out what will change about the models that we hold so dear today, gives us an update on the Safire project, and sheds some light on the cosmic horizon. It's a wild ride, so buckle up!!

11 Jul 2024A Sudden Savant: Futons to Fermions, Quantum Holography, and a New Calculus - Jason Padgett, #26302:33:33

Today's episode features Jason Padgett, a physicist and artist whose path to a mathematical conception of reality began with a violent attack in his early 30s. We discuss this transformation after brain injury. How with zero mathematical background he found himself reinventing calculus. We discuss his attempts to bring himself into line with peers who had a very different formal training. Then we discuss his particular theoretical projects in physics. In particular he has developed a theory of informational constants of nature, which he calls holographic quantum information theory in an effort to unify quantum mechanics and Einsteinian relativity. To make sense of that we unpack concepts like cubits, hidden information, and quantum vector spin models. We close with a discussion of probabilistic reality and the nature of material reality versus mathematical models. 29 Mar 2021Strength Without Compassion is a Road to Ruin - Dr. Ruth Ben-Ghiat, NYU01:02:24

Propaganda, strongmen, and authoritarianism are mainstays across the authoritarian-liberatrian boundary, marked by a lack of democratic and free elections, a codified hostility towards threat to the social order, a lack of accountability, and religious party loyalism. ªº¬˚∆≤≥≤≥ Join the mailing list http://eepurl.com/gRUCZL ≤≥≤≥∆˚¬ºª

Widespread lockdowns have triggered fears that the world is taking a turn towards authoritarian rule, a government system that’s marked by a lack of democratic and free elections, a codified hostility towards threat to the social order, a lack of accountability, and party loyalists at every turn.

The 20th century despots were very effective at playing on endemic frustrations during long periods of economic hardships. Hitler came to power during the interwar period where Germany was dealing with extreme social instability following reparation-driven hyperinflation. A  damaged information ecology, where levels of mistrust and conspiratorial thinking go through the roof, reinforces a want to be ruled by someone who promises answers. They want an economic and social liferaft, not nuance.

Living in fear causes a cascading reaction that activates the fight-or-flight response at a constant level, which means that people’s brains actually change - we lose our ability to make well-reasoned, emotionally discharged decisions. Instead, everything becomes reactive, a panicked stormy attempt to get out ahead of the problem that they can’t get a clear perspective on.

Despite the novelty of your democratic experiment, it seems possible that you humans will live to improve it. Political tolerance is one way of finding your way to strength. There has to be an open exchange of ideas and interpretations. If you find that there are voices being silenced, you must fight to make room for their careful, public analysis, lest your satisfaction at their absence be the weakness in your armor.

03 Mar 2023Myth of The Lone Genius - Dennis McCarthy02:18:52

Dennis McCarthy is a writer, historian, and independent researcher who, in the process of tracing Hamlet’s origin, ended up unwinding the entire legend of Shakespeare. Digging deeper into the history of Shakespeare's plays alongside collaborators June Schlueter and Michael Blanding, McCarthy uncovered evidence that all but two of Shakespeare’s plays were written by Sir Thomas North, an English translator, lawyers, and justice of the peace. We dig into the evidence for the overlap between the two figures, unpack the myth of the lone genius, and seek to understand how the origin of ideas is driven by the sum total of the biogeographic connections that impinge on a given time and place.

15 Feb 2021What is the Future of the Internet? - Evan Bailyn01:18:15

Earth’s online evolution - Technological explosions weather spiritual implosions...

::!!:: Join the Demystifying Science mailing list ::!!::  http://eepurl.com/gRUCZL ::!!::

Like all ecosystems, the community that’s emerged on the internet requires a diversity of species to be optimally functional - and that threatened by the big tech monoculture emerging on Earth these days. To figure out what’s going on, we go back to the 1960s when it all started, and trace the explosion of online existence since then. Our conversation with Evan Bailyn, a 17-year veteran of getting websites to the front page of Google, considers what exactly the future of the internet might look like. His experience with the inner workings of the search behemoth leads us to a fascinating conversation about the things you won’t find on Google, the strange nature of niche radicalization, and what - if anything - is going to replace the big three that dominate the online world today.

23 Jun 2024No Petroleum, No Problem? - Dr. Simon Michaux, Geological Survey of Finland # 25902:59:25

Dr. Simon Michaux is a professor of geometallurgy at the Geological Survey of Finland. After having spent several years in private industry, he was laid off during one of the regular busts that inevitably accompany booms in the mining sector. In that period, Simon found a new appreciation for the material basis of civilization while taking temporary work as an organic farmer. When he returned to intellectual work as a professor, he brought this real-world understanding to geopolitical assessments, presenting his analyses to everyone from economists to UN delegations. Ultimately, what separates Simon from his peers is his ability to suggest a realistic solution set to the difficulty of planning a technologically accelerating future within the confines of a fundamentally finite material ecosystem. He lays out a set of alternative approaches to nuclear power, combustion power, and engines that will absolutely make you stop and reconsider the possibilities. His presentation begins with the idea that we may be running out of petroleum, but that doesn't mean we have to be running out of fuel. A subsequent podcast will explore Simon's ongoing work to demonstrate his principles in an idealized city-of-the future in the desert of Peru. More on his Prometheus Project to come, very soon. 09 Mar 2023Journey to the Edge: Structure of the Heliosphere - Dr. Eric Zirnstein, Princeton University01:50:35

Erik Zirnstein is a researcher at Princeton's Space Physics Group who is studying the outermost reaches of our solar system - the place where the heliosphere meets the interstellar medium. But how do you study something so large when you’re so very, very small? We explore the science behind the heliosphere and the interstellar medium, and the cutting-edge technologies that enable us to explore this structures found in this mysterious region of space, the sun as a point source, the slow but steady progress of technological advancements, layer-cake records preserved in the heliotail,  and intriguing mysteries of the interstellar medium.

18 Jul 2024Reverse Physics - Dr. Gabriele Carcassi, U. Michigan, DSPod #26502:59:56

Prof. Gabriele Carcassi is a University of Michigan Physicists who became obsessed with a simple question during his training. Where do the mathematics of physics actually come from? They are handed down to us as students as if they were immutable laws of nature… but are they? Or are they simply mathematical transformations that have long ago left the realm of reality and made their home in the spheres of theory? It turns out that we really don’t know where the line between pure theory and physical reality can be drawn! Luckily, Carcassi and his research partner Prof. Christine Aidala have dedicated their time to deciphering what they call the “Assumptions of Physics,” a project which they hope will let them take apart the basic principles of the foundational science and put the whole thing back together again in a way that makes much more sense. 08 Aug 2022Revolutionizing Nuclear Architecture - Edo Kaal, Structured Atom Model02:35:30

Edo Kaal believes that it would be more useful to think about the atomic nucleus in terms of architecture rather than abstract mathematics. His Structured Atom Model (SAM) addresses the material basis of whether or not an element is radioactive, how the isotopes differ from one another, how instability occurs for large elements after lead, why alpha decay occurs, and much, much more. We ask the obvious questions to try to understand the model better.
