15 Apr 2024Ep. 53 The Winning Mindset: Tips for Priming Your Brain for Ballroom Dance Competitions00:19:32

In this week's episode we're doing a deep dive into something amateur dancers (and even some professionals) often neglect as they get ready for competition and that is mental preparation. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not minimizing the importance of doing rounds or rehearsing your routines and drilling technique. We all know muscle memory is vital to not only success, but fun on the dance floor! But let's face it, your brain runs the show and no amount of physical preparation is going to make up or a poor mindset. In order to be the best you can be on game day, you've got to incorporate strategies that prepare your brain as well as your body into your pre-competition routine.

It can't be emphasized enough... the key to preventing run-of-the-mill pre-competition jitters from turning into full-blown anxiety is what goes on between your ears and that's why I'm sharing some easy mental prep tools for you to incorporate into your pre-competition routine. Grab a pen and a pad of paper because trust me, you're going to want to take notes!

06 May 2024Ep. 56 The Secret to Longevity on the Dance Floor with Ron and Carrie Magee 00:18:44

Summary

Carrie and Ron McGee, senior five championship level amateur smooth and standard dancers, share their secrets for longevity on the dance floor. They started ballroom dancing after being invited to a party by their neighbors and quickly fell in love with it. They became the only couple left in Kansas City dancing as amateurs on the NDCA or the USABDA USA Dance Circuits. They transitioned from standard to smooth dancing and found success in both. They took a break from dancing for five years due to injuries but returned to the dance floor with a renewed passion. They emphasize the importance of reducing the intensity of routines and taking care of their bodies through physical therapy, yoga, and massage therapy. They also prioritize social interaction and the joy of dancing over winning competitions. They encourage older dancers to continue dancing but adjust their routines and expectations to accommodate their bodies. They advocate for more participation in senior five competitions and suggest organizing multi-day competitions to accommodate dancers who compete in multiple styles. Despite making mistakes along the way, they continue to dance and defy age stereotypes.

Takeaways

Start dancing at any age and enjoy the journey.

Take care of your body through physical therapy, yoga, and massage therapy.

Prioritize social interaction and the joy of dancing over winning competitions.

Adjust routines and expectations to accommodate your body as you age.

Advocate for more participation in senior five competitions and multi-day competitions.

In today's podcast, Randall Designs current owner, Ken Heron, and lead designer, Aron Harvey share their thoughts on the future of Randall Designs as well as the crime committed last month with tips for how we, the members of the dance community, can help with the investigation.
