07 Jul 2024Talking about Style with Hannah Jensen Fox, Jen Sievers & Carla Grace00:47:08

I wanted to finish off season 1 with something special, and when I put a q&a up on the podcast instagram, more then half of the questions were about style. I've asked all the guests from season one to come on and give their thoughts, and most of them have agreed which is fabulous. So I'm going to split this up into 2-3 episodes that I'll release over the next 2 weeks.

This week, I'm talking to Hannah Jensen Fox, Jen Sievers and Carla Grace about style, how they see it in their work, how it evolves and changes and much more!

14 Jul 2024Talking about style with Madeleine Simson, Johnny K, Emily Raubenheimer and Willy Russo01:00:53

In this final episode of Season 1, I'm talking with Madeleine Simson, Johnny K, Emily Raubenheimer and Willy Russo about style.

I loved hearing the similarities, differences and threads that carried across all these interviews and in a way, these short segments at the end of this season capture what I wanted to do with this show as a whole, the show a diversity of opinion, because sometimes the lessons that you learn in your first 10 months creating art are as important and game changing as those that you learn 10 years in.

Thank you so much to all of the guests from this season, and thank you to all the listeners too!! I've loved making this and it means the world to me that you are all enjoying it too.

see you soon for season 2!

01 Dec 2024Season Finale- Endings and Beginnings with Danielle Krysa, Jordan Barnes, Susan Nethercote, Lisa Doust, Anita De Soto & Rosie Holt01:10:02

To round out the season I'm talking to almost all of this seasons guests again, with Danielle Krysa, Jordan Barnes, Susan Nethercote, Lisa Doust, Anita De Soto & Rosie Holt coming back to share their thoughts on endings and beginnings. We talk about how these artists see the end of an artwork, the end of a body of work, the cyclical nature of themes and work that can carry over into many years, or a lifetime as well as how they generate and explore new ideas. I thought this would be a particularly great topic to explore close to the end of the year.

I also give you two small projects

1- Share the pod ( Merry Christmas to me)

2- Top 9- Will you join us in sharing 9 artworks of others that have made a difference to you or your work this year? If you do join in, find 9 artworks (from other artists) that you love and want to share and put them in a 3 x 3 grid, tag me or the pod @thecreativekindpodcast or share the post with me so that I can share it too and we can all see more art from different people and all get to explore some more art & artists for Christmas (Merry Christmas to us!). I'll pop and example in the newsletter this week.

hopefully one more Secret Santa episode to come out next week, maybe the week after! stay tuned :D

06 Jan 2025Creative Matters Interview with Julie Battisti01:23:24

Happy new year! Welcome back to The Creative Kind, Today’s episode is a little different — instead of interviewing someone else, I’m sharing an interview that I recently did for the wonderful Creative Matters podcast.

I’ll admit, it feels a bit strange to put myself in the spotlight here, but I think it’s a great opportunity to let you in on some of my personal journey, especially since I’m always asking my guests to do the same! A big thank you to Mandy Jakich interviewing me and allowing me to share it here with you all. I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed chatting with her.

13 Jan 2025Studio Session with Jenni Stringleman, Amanda Billing and Julie Battisti00:38:39

Today, I’m introducing a new style of episode that I’m calling Studio Sessions. These aren’t the usual interviews you’re used to hearing here. Instead, they’re more laid-back conversations with one or two other artists about art, creativity, life, and how these things combine and collide.

I’m not entirely sure how often these episodes will happen—it’s a bit of an experiment. They’re d a chance to dig into the raw, real side of the artistic process and chat to past and future guests from the podcast. I’m so excited to see where this new direction takes us!

Don’t worry—the interview episodes you know and love aren’t going anywhere. I’ve got a whole series planned, and I can’t wait to share what’s coming up this year. But every now and then, you’ll spot a Studio Session in your feed. These episodes will have a blue background and “Studio Session” in the title, so you’ll know when to expect something a little different.

For today’s Studio Session, I sat down with Amanda Billing—a photographer, actor, and artist—and Jenni Stringleman, a painter. Both are based in Auckland, New Zealand, and we had an honest and wide-ranging conversation about the ups and downs of the creative process. We talked about navigating those tricky in-between times, the moments of doubt, and the sparks of joy that keep us going.

It’s raw, it’s real, and maybe even a little unpredictable. I hope you enjoy it!

06 Mar 2025Rachael Mayne- Artists and Anxiety00:58:35

In this episode of 'The Creative Kind,' I’m joined by Rachael Mayne, a psychologist and painter based in Aotearoa, New Zealand, to discuss the intersection of anxiety and art. Rachael explains that anxiety is a normal, protective mechanism but can become problematic when it impacts daily functioning. We explore how anxiety manifests for artists, and how tools like journaling, mindfulness, and therapy can help. We touch on issues of imposter syndrome, the impact of social media on self-esteem, and the challenge of staying inspired. We also discuss our personal experiences of navigating the "ugly phase" in paintings, recognizing it as a natural part of the process rather than a sign of failure. Racheal offers practical strategies for managing creative anxiety, including having multiple projects at different stages and recognizing when energy levels allow for experimentation.
