04 Jan 2021Ep 034: Coaching mindset00:11:53

Today, I'm talking about mindset. We love that word, don't we? So I'd love you to think about what mindset means for you.

For me, I see mindset as the belief that we can do something. So if we have a strong mindset, then we are really confident in our belief that we're able to do whatever we put our minds to and overcome any challenges.

I also think that when we look at mindset in this way, it's really about those thoughts and beliefs that we hold about our ability not only to do what we want to do but to overcome any challenges that happen along the way. Because in life, things are not always as easy as they seem.

So how can coaching transform your thoughts, your beliefs, your feelings, and your emotions so that you feel that you have those resources inside of you so that you can tackle anything head-on?

Let’s dive in and find out.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

{2:49} What will be different about this year if you've not done the work on your mindset?

{3:41} Recognising unhelpful thinking patterns

{4:37} How the work you do on yourself is visible in your energy

{5:53} How coaching can help to reprogram limiting beliefs

{9:47} How coaching helps to explore what happens between the brain and the mouth or hand

08 Mar 2021Ep 044: Thinking differently00:10:32

In a world where it can often feel like we live in an echo chamber, surrounding ourselves with people that think the same as ours, that echo our beliefs and our values, Coaching allows us to have space to really challenge how we think.

I've been reading a fantastic book by Adam Grant called Think Again over the last couple of weeks and what really struck me is that part of the way that we help people be successful through coaching, is that we get them to get out of their head and to examine what is going on with their thoughts and where these thoughts come from and how valid those thoughts are if they can look at things in a different way.

It's becoming increasingly important that we allow ourselves that space to really examine what is going on in our heads, because we can so easily go through life on autopilot, thinking that we are doing things in the way that we've always done them and not really knowing why.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

{2:21} Modelling the thinking of successful people

{3:18} Encouraging clients to look at different viewpoints

{6:26} How slowing down our thinking helps us to make better decisions

{8:45} Having the mindset of a scientist who looks to update their hypotheses constantly

09 Nov 2020Ep 026: How to build a coaching business on your terms 00:13:52

The online world is awash with gurus sharing the one way to build your business - some of these gurus are truly amazing at what they do and will show you exactly how to create the course / program / membership site that you want.

The issue is that we can be sucked into marketing and can create businesses which are not aligned for how we want to work and how we want to show up in the world.

In this episode I share how it is important that we go back to basics when we look at our business model: what are our strengths? What do we enjoy? Where do we get our energy? What are our values and how do we want our life to look?

Some of my clients work 1:1 and do some teaching, training or speaking, others run memberships and group programs, others combine corporate work with 1:1, others run courses and workshops. There is no right way: the important thing is that you do what you want to do rather than what you think you should and it works for you.

Here are the highlights from today’s episode:

{2:08} A business model that works for you

{3:33} Consider your strengths

{4:39} What you enjoy

{6:23} What is important to you: values

{10:36} Be clear on the life you want

14 Sep 2020Ep 018: How to be a good leader00:10:16

In this episode I will talk about leadership and how we can be real leaders. If we really want to be a leader, we need to step up with powerful self-leadership first.

Leadership is not about what we tell others to do, it is an inside job. The most powerful, compassionate and authentic leaders are not those who shout the loudest, although they may be like me and they may be loud.

They are people that practice leadership mastery and self-leadership first. I will share with you my experience and why it’s important to lead ourselves before leading others.

15 Jun 2020Ep 005: Connecting with yourself to work on what really matters00:13:02

So how often are you honest with yourself about what you actually want and what you want your life to look like? I see so many people take on goals from other people. They say online "I want to make 10K months. I want to have a six figure business or a seven figure business. I want to weigh nine stone, 10 stone. I want to run a marathon in under three hours."

We see all of these goals other people are setting and sharing, and we have this 'me too' approach.

Honestly, if we're not connecting with ourselves and what we really want, then the goal setting is merely a vanity project and it's not going to have any meaning. Goals without meaning, money without meaning? There's nothing there.

In this episode I’m talking about working on mastery goals and how you can implement them in your life so you have more of a focus on growing and learning and living within your values.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

{0:43} How often are you honest with yourself?

{2:27} Are your goals really important to you?

{3:01} Simple daily journaling practice

{4:59} Values as the rules for our lives

{6:38} Mastery goals

{10:42} Being focussed on learning

30 Jan 2025Ep 192: Why Being You as a Coach Matters00:10:41

You've probably been told that being a "blank slate" as a coach is the professional way to go, but this couldn't be further from the truth. In this episode I challenge the notion that coaches should be clinical and robotic in their approach. You'll discover why building genuine relationships with your clients through selective self-disclosure is crucial for creating a safe, trusting coaching environment. Whether you're a new coach struggling with how much of yourself to bring to sessions or an experienced practitioner looking to deepen client connections, this episode reveals practical insights about showing up authentically while maintaining professional boundaries. You'll learn how sharing relevant personal experiences, especially when working with neurodivergent clients, can build powerful bridges of understanding without turning the session into a one-sided story.

Here are the Highlights:

00:00 Introduction

05:44 Bring your whole self to coaching but be mindful of the impact on clients; have regular supervision.

07:17 Distinguish between sharing for empathy and self-focus; use it to build bridges.

09:47 Build those relationships with trust and safety,

08 Feb 2021Ep 039: Money, money, money 00:17:10

In this episode, I'm lifting the lid on the seven-figure business. Let's be honest. We can measure this in so many different ways. Is it all sales? Is it all cash and bank?

Is it on profit? Part of the confusion I see online is that when people are talking about seven figures, they are including any of those. So I wanted to talk about what is a seven-figure business. Is it what we all need to aspire to, or really, is it a benchmark that is there for some people?

Here are the highlights from the episode:

{2:09} How we can use money as a measurement tool in our businesses

{3:26} Our beliefs about money

{4:26} What money represents for you

{5:41} How much money do we actually need?

{6:48} Deciding what’s important to you right now

{7:53} What money can allow you to do

{9:28} Is the business you want to grow the one you have?

{12:47} How you won’t always make the right decisions

{14:07} Sacrifices

{14:43} Behind the scenes of a 7 figure business

01 Aug 2022Eps 130: How parent coaching is on the rise and how transformational it can be with Penny Philips00:27:45

If you are a parent this is a must listen. I am joined by Penny Phllips, a graduate of the Optimus Coach Academy program and the founder of a new charity Parent Village where I am a trustee.

We are delving into how parent coaching is on the rise and how transformational it can be for both parents and their children.

Let’s be honest there is no manual for being a parent and despite the Instagram facade some people have most of us admit it can be pretty hard and sometimes we suck at it! This is where coaching can come in for all parents and especially those parents who are isolated as it can help parents to get clarity on what is going on and move forward in a purposeful, intentional way.

The work that Penny does with parents enables them to turn around their relationships with their children and also to have the confidence that they are doing okay - something we all need sometimes!

I would love everyone to have the support of parent coaching (maybe a vision for the future)

22 Jun 2020Ep 006: Having honest conversations with ourselves about money00:13:30

How often do you think about money?

Let's be honest, It's something that most of us have an interesting relationship with.

In this episode I’m talking about us having honest conversations with ourselves about money, because ultimately however much we dislike or we don't respect money, it is something that is significant in our lives.

If we're looking at a hierarchy of needs model like Maslow, we know that at that very basic level, we need to have our basic needs met, which includes shelter, food, clothing, warmth and safety. Ultimately, in the modern world, we need to have money to support us so we can meet those needs. If we have anxiety around our ability to meet those needs for ourselves and for others, then that's going to impact every area of our lives.

Talking about this topic can feel difficult because many of us have these deep entrenched feelings, beliefs and stories that we tell ourselves about money.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

{2:35} Our relationship with money is not about money

{3:58} Reflecting on your relationship with money

{5:34} Our unconscious patterns around money

{6:50} Challenging our beliefs and the stories we tell ourselves about money

{8:28} What do you tell yourself about money?

{10:49} Acting in ways consistent with your new beliefs

03 Oct 2022Episode 138 - A Focus On Self-Acceptance and Self-Awareness00:18:41

A huge part of the coaching process is self-awareness. Understanding who we are, what motivates us, and what our personal goals are.

Before we put ourselves forward to guide and coach others, we need to have a clear understanding of what makes us tick.

I believe that developing our self-awareness is crucial to understanding ourselves better, so we can not only learn from our mistakes, but also learn to embrace them and realise they are part of who we are- and of course, that ultimately helps us to become better coaches!

In today’s episode I discuss my own experiences with ADHD, drama triangles and offer tips on how we can acknowledge our own imperfections.

Here are the highlights:

(01:02) ADHD

(05:05) Not everything is personal

(09:07) Misinterpretation

(11:50) Guilt

11 Jan 2021Ep 035: What does a coach do?00:13:04

In today's episode, we're exploring what a coach does. We know that the word coach is pretty widely spread, and is used really for a whole range of interventions.

In an unregulated industry, I want to talk about what the  ICF version of a coach does. The ICF is the International Coaching Federation, and they are the biggest coaching accreditation body in the world, and probably the most respected. There are other coaching accreditation bodies available, I do have to mention that. We're going to look at it from a pure coaching perspective.

If you are looking to work with somebody who is a qualified and accredited coach, you need to look out for a few things. Let's dive in!

Here are the highlights from this episode:

{2:45} Finding out the training a coach has completed

15 Nov 2021Eps 097: Adopting a Growth Mindset00:32:02

What does it mean to embody a growth mindset?

So many of us cognitively understand the growth mindset, yet we struggle to fully adopt one. In a culture obsessed with ‘doing’ and measuring, it’s not easy to stop the fixed mindset from creeping back in and taking over!

28 Dec 2020Ep 033: Making goals stick00:10:40

How do we make sure that our new year's resolutions and goals actually stick? Let's be honest. I think that most of us, after 2020, when we were all saying a year ago, "Let's make 2020 the best year. Yeah, I can feel this next decade is going to be amazing, blah, blah, blah," I think that maybe it may have changed some of our mindset on this best year ever dialogue.

However, we still see the same things. We see the articles in the magazines and hear this idea of having new year's resolutions, and we often think, maybe this is going to be the year we've finally do the thing we want to do.

So in this episode, I'm going to talk about how we can make our resolutions, or in other words, our focus and our intentions for the new year, actually stick and how we can do things that work for us, not against us, so that we feel more aligned with what we want to create.

Here are the highlights from this episode:

{2:40} Resolutions focus on the behaviours

{3:21} Making the foundations of the change we want to make, solid.

{4:52} The inside out approach

{6:18} Looking at what's underneath the changes we want to make

{7:51) What's really important to you?

{9:01} Layering your beliefs and values onto your resolutions

03 Oct 2024Ep 176: Deconstructing Dynamics in Team Coaching with Crystal Small00:24:52

Ready to transform the dynamics of your coaching practice? In today’s episode, I speak to Crystal Small. Crystal is not just any coach, she's a seasoned professional with roles ranging from supervisor and mentor to trainer and facilitator. Currently, she brings her expertise part-time to the Optimus Coaching Academy while running a successful coaching business.

Together we explore the unique dynamics of team coaching, contrasting it with 1:1 coaching and delving into the complexities of facilitating multiple voices and perspectives in a collective setting. Using the metaphor of an orchestra, Crystal illustrates how a team can either harmonise beautifully or hit those discordant "bum notes" if not properly guided.

We also discuss the importance of contracting, understanding team culture, and recognising the various archetypes individuals play within a group. Crystal shares valuable strategies on how to harness these roles to create a cohesive and transparent team environment, filled with trust and mutual respect.

Here are the Highlights:

04:25 Collective contracting ensures alignment of team values.

08:37 Recognise room archetypes: comedian, inventor, cynic.

11:11 How you show up impacts the team.

14:08 Creating safe space for truth and growth.

18:45 Truth-sharing builds trust, fostering genuine connections through conflict.

22:36 Love leadership teams; breaking the mold fascinates me.

24 May 2021Ep 073: Online coaching truths00:14:58

In the online space, it does seem that if somebody has got to six figures in their business, people then think that they are the perfect person to help others get to six figures on their own.

I am going to be blasting through some myths here, and I'm going to be talking about the difference between mentoring and coaching, how many people do a blend as well as what is actually important in my opinion, from a consumer point of view.

Here are the highlights:

{3:16} Do you talk about your client's results?

{4:20} Saying no to the cookie-cutter business model

{6:21} How we're often sold a dream online

{8:51} How you can be more curious as a pure coach if you don't have experience in what the client is talking about

{10:12} How we can believe that somebody's success is enough for them to help us be more successful in our own field

{12:09} Figuring out if a coach or mentor is for you

{13:32} Who are you choosing to work with you and walk alongside you to take you to the next level?

02 Nov 2020Ep 025: How to get in the right mindset to coach00:10:17

As a coaching mindset becomes a distinct ICF competency what does it actually mean?

I believe that as coaches our mindset is one of the most important things we can work on between client sessions to deliver great results.

Some of my top hacks, alongside the exercise / journaling / reading / silence / diet / sleep list that we all know so well are shared in this podcast, I include: having time off social media every week, switching off from our phones, either having someone else answer my emails or having the apps off my phone, reading fiction and doing other things which stimulate my brain which aren’t coaching.

Alongside this it is hugely important as a coach that we continue developing our knowledge, skills and experience through training, reading, coaching practice AND that we have safe spaces to talk about coaching for example in supervision (or in my new coaching hub membership).

Here are the highlights from today’s episode:

{2:14} A brief talk about energy hygiene

{4:24} The importance of performing cognitively at our best

{7:32} Tune in to what you find enriching
