Did you know that there are better times for certain foods and certain exercises during your monthly cycle? In the first half (follicular phase) it’s best to get plenty of cruciferous veggies, incorporate flax and pumpkin seed, eat more carbs, and do harder, more intense workouts. In the second half after ovulation (luteal phase) focus on protein and healthy fat, keep carbs lower, incorporate sunflower and sesame seeds and do lighter, more restorative exercise like walking and yoga. Overbreathing or breathing through your mouth causes major metabolic and overall health problems. Breathing too much and too fast are the breaths of stress and fear. You can count calories in, but you may be blocking them from “getting out.” Insulin blocks fat burning and if you’re eating foods or drinking beverages that constantly raise insulin, you are messaging your body to store fat and not to burn it. Things like artificial sweeteners and diet drinks may not have calories, but they can still raise insulin and signal your body to be in “storage mode.”Calorie counting can be helpful, but it’s not everything. Seasonal transitions are a perfect time for a detox. The winter to spring transition, in particular, naturally encourages fasting, burning fat and releasing toxins. Winter is a higher fat and protein focused (more animal based) season of the year because there’s less plant life available when it’s freezing outside. It’s also a more natural time to fast longer because the daytime is shorter. That will change on the other side of spring when the plants are growing and it’s naturally a time for more carbohydrates and less fasting because there is more light. This all coincides beautifully with the season of Lent. People who grew up in strict food households often tell me they would go crazy eating every forbidden food as soon as they got out of the house and are now sugar-holics.
