08 Feb 2020Season 1 Episode 21: Too Much Technology?00:27:55

In this episode, Chey and Pav discuss the idea that there might be too much technology in the classroom for students today, and that the abundance of it is taking away from students being able to engage in true Social Emotional Learning. They are suffering in terms of their communication skills, and not necessarily engaging in true community and culture building because they are constantly hiding behind a screen.

Chey and Pav refer to an article from the New York Post (link provided below), where the author discusses the idea that there is too much tech, and not enough development of social skills. They agree that in some ways, students can become too dependent on the technology in the classroom, but there are many different ways that students can engage with one another with their technology, based on how it is being used.

They introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest, Evan Whitehead, who talks about his 3 B's - Balance, Boundaries, Brakes.

They discuss a few of their own anecdotal stories and thoughts about how tech can be used to support SEL, and also how Social Media plays a big impact on students and their mental states.

22 Nov 2023Building a Thinking Classroom - 13101:17:24
In Episode 131, Chey and Pav reflect on how they've been implementing "Thinking Classrooms" in their respective learning spaces. The "Thinking Classroom" model has been coined by mathematician Dr. Peter Liljedahl and his work of creating math learning spaces that encourage students to think more with their math tasks. This problems based approach has several best practices attached to it (outlined by this edutopia post by Peter, himself) and Chey and Pav talk about a few of the first chapters and how they've implemented these strategies. Pav teaches Math and Science, and Chey teaches Language and History - so it has been interesting to see how the two of them use the Thinking Classroom model in different ways to support learning. Learn more about Building Thinking Classrooms from his book found here, and his website. Chey and Pav are always open and willing to engage in meaningful chatter about educational topics. 15 Feb 2020Season 1 Episode 22: Introverted Learners00:34:03

In Episode 22, Chey and Pav talk about Introverted Learners, and how to accommodate for them appropriately in our classrooms. We all have students with varying learning styles in our rooms, and those with Introverted tendencies tend to experience the most strain. The classroom experience is traditionally set up for Extroverted learners. Introverted learners often get left behind in this situation.

Chey and Pav discuss that Introverted learners have their own character traits and shouldn't necessarily be trying to strive for extroverted learning traits - sometimes we as teachers unintentionally push all students to try and fit into this box of being extroverted - that this is the ideal personality for success, but that's not necessarily the case.

The duo talk about some of their experiences, both personal and in the classroom, that have led to them changing up some of their teaching styles and best practices in order to engage in more equitable practice for all kinds of learners in the classroom - starting with the set-up of the physical space, to include more areas in the room to use as reflection zones, so that introverted learners can be comfortable and thrive in their classrooms.

We want to celebrate Introverted learners and how they learn and differentiate our instruction so that even in collaborative settings, they still have the ability to thrive.

The pair introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes Guest, Dr. Cristobal Sandana, administrator from the Austin area in Texas. Links to his twitter and blog are located below.

30 May 2020Season 1: Episode 37: A Great Time for Appreciation00:46:11

In Episode 37 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the incredible work that has been done by teachers, students, administrators, families - in the face of crisis learning, in the hopes of moving towards remote learning. Education had to pivot on a dime in the face of this pandemic, and teachers, first and foremost, had to completely change the way they did everything for their students in their classrooms. And they did it extremely well. On their morning radio show, The Drive on VoicEd Radio, Chey and Pav had a two-part dedication episode, during which they had an incredible amount of educators submit dedications to other educators, students, parents and administrators - to thank them for the incredible work they have done in the past year with respect to building something incredible for their students during such a difficult time.

Chey and Pav emphasize that sometimes the need from appreciation for educators, students and families arises from some negative criticisms that might occur. We use this as an opportunity to reinforce and dedicate some appreciation for our peers at this time.

Chey and Pav introduce Dustin Pearson, a SPED Teacher and Coach from Kansas City, Missouri for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Dustin  talks about his initiative called #WeAreOneTeam - focusing on the culture and relationship building that needs to occur to Increase Student Achievement!

After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up their takeaways about appreciation. They discuss the necessity for showing appreciation towards all of the parties involved with this difficult school year, as we have all needed to pivot on a dime in order to make everything work.

Remember to Inspire, Don't Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies.

23 May 2020Season 1 Episode 36: Conversations on Conflict00:47:47

In Episode 36 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav recap the chat conversation that was hosted by Education Never DIes on Twitter a few days prior. They use the chat as a way to work a little deeper into the topic of what conflict truly is. Chey and Pav discuss the fact that conflict resolution among educators can only be attempted when the school culture and relationship building has occurred and a safe space has been set up. They also discuss the necessity of the sometimes difficult dialogue that needs to happen in order to be able to attempt to resolve conflicts. The culture of the conflict itself is also discussed. 03 Oct 2020EP55: Can We Learn to Code without Computers? 00:42:30

In Episode 55 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about coding, as it is now included in the new Ontario math Curriculum. Coding is something that not many teachers have had the opportunity to be able to teach their students, especially in the younger years. Chey and Pav thought about the ways in which they are able to start teaching students about coding and programming, when they likely have had no exposure to it.

Chey and Pav tried a few coding activities this past week that don't require the use of technology, and they found that the range of knowledge with the students was quite vast. They concluded that all students should really be starting their journey into coding without the use of a computer or tablet to start - in that they need to understand the WHY behind the coding to begin. And also, from an equity standpoint, there's so much disparity between students and their abilities due to the access that students would have to tech.

Chey and Pav introduce Yaritza Villalba, High School Social Studies teacher from Brooklyn, New York, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Yaritza talks about the importance of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy with her students, who are, "Overaged and under credited." Working with older students, Yaritza recognizes the importance of being culturally relevant with teaching.

After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up by giving a few examples of the coding work they have done with their students, with and without technology, and some of the learning that has arisen from these experiences.

Chey and Pav talk about all kinds of different scenarios that affect students in regards to homework, and which ones they tend to use in their classrooms. Chey talks about an episode on Homework of The Monarch Experience, a podcast that incorporates student voice in its episodes. 19 Sep 2020EP53:How can we embed SEL into our Math programming?00:49:40
In Episode 53 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about Math and Social Emotional Learning (SEL). The new Ontario Mathematics Curriculum includes SEL as one of the 6 major strands, and therefore there needs to be more of a conversation about what that could look like when embedded in math programming.  Chey and Pav talked about a few different resources they used to direct their conversation. They have both received lots of training at school with respect to the new curriculum, and a major piece of their professional development over the past few weeks was centered around SEL. Chey and Pav also were lucky to be able to catch the OnEd Mentors Podcast with Noa Daniel. This past week, the live broadcast was focused on the new math curriculum, featuring a few amazing guests, who are all well-versed with mathematical pedagogy. Noa referenced a TedTalk focused around math, called "5 Ways to Share Math with Kids" by Dan Finkel.  In this Ted Talk, Dan discusses 5 principles geared towards sharing math with students. There are important points that Chey and Pav discussed, including - Students need time to struggle, in order to deepen curiosity and the ability to take a risk, and Saying YES to students ideas. The ideas presented were very helpful in establishing a great relationship with students and also helping them along the social emotional pathway with respect to math.  Chey and Pav introduce Santiago Meza, principal from Rosamond, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Santiago talks about his experiences growing up, and the lessons he learned from his family. He also speaks about his initiative, #RootedInStrengthCA.  After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up with some further exploration of what teaching math with embedded SEL might look like. They give lots of great examples of their own experiences as well.  OnEd Mentors Podcast with Noa Daniel: https://voiced.ca/podcast_episode_post/responding-to-the-new-ontario-math-curriculum/ TedTalk with Dan Finkel: https://www.ted.com/talks/dan_finkel_5_ways_to_share_math_with_kids?language=en Remember to Inspire, Don't Require, always be a Humble Servant, and Education Never Dies. 28 Mar 2020Seaons 1 Episode 28: Creating the Perfect at Home Learning Environment00:33:52

In Episode 28 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about their at-home learning environment for their kids. They discuss what the atmosphere has been like, what they have established as their schedule for the day, and what they predict schedules will be like once the distance ed programs begin with school.

They duo talks about the importance of "Soft Schedules," dedicated time to make and create during the day, and the need for students to have lots of unstructured time. The day cannot be as rigid as it was while we were in school - at home we have to give our children some loose time schedules and frameworks to work around.

There should be lots of time during the day to play, there should be opportunity to learn some life and home skills, and there should be time to read. We want to be able to get quality learning out of our children, but we have to remember the social and emotional factors that affect our kids on a daily basis.

Chey and Pav offer some strategies that can be employed once distance learning begins for them in the home, and how to go about creating a working atmosphere that works for everyone in the household.

The Dynamic Duo introduces Chuck Moss, Principal of Dinwiddie Middle School in Virginia for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, as he talks about building upon school culture in an at-home learning environment.

09 Nov 2019Season 1 Episode 10: What's the right Class Size?00:30:48

In Episode 10, Chey and Pav discuss the optimal Class Size for their middle school class. All teachers want smaller class sizes, but this is not always a realistic expectation. Chey and Pav both agree that a class size of about 25 students is optimal, so long as the special education resources remain within the class. Pav talks about the class size cap that exists in Ontario, and the pitfalls of not carrying that cap over to grades 4 to 8 as well. She discusses that when class sizes exceed a certain number of students, the teacher is not optimally able to reach all students in an effective way. Chey talks about other things that suffer as well. Access to resources is diminished, there isn't enough physical space for the class, money is not always equitably shared and the paperwork that needs to be done for a large class can become highly overwhelming. Chey and Pav welcome their second guest for the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment - Karen Fleming - who speaks about equitable teaching practices and culturally inclusive pedagogy, with the need to reflect her students as much as possible through her classroom resources. The episode wraps up with an anecdotal tale from Chey! As always, there's always lots to talk about in The Staffroom!

20 Jun 2020Season 1 Episode 40: Reflections from a Monumental Year00:55:34

In Episode 40 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the past school year, and all that it brought forth. They started the conversation by discussing what it was like for them as educators to start their own podcast. They discuss that they have they have connected with teachers all over the world, been invited to participate in conversations and chats that have led to some of the most high quality learning they have ever experienced in their careers, due to the podcast and The Drive radio show.

From there, they went on to discuss the monumental change in their teaching practice with the onset of Covid-19. From Crisis Learning, to new technologies, to the development of a teaching platform that has evolved from something that was barely functional to something that might be sustainable, was a huge shift for all teachers.

There was then the tragic event of George Floyd's murder, followed by a reawakening for many educators on the dire need for anti-racism work in their classrooms. Chey and Pav reflected on the learning they have done, and the conversations they have been able to have with their students and colleagues on Black LIves Matters and Equity work. They reflected on what this means for them, and other educators, going forward.

Chey and Pav introduce Jamie Brown, a VP at Holmdel High School in New Jersey for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Jamie talks about Social Emotional Learning in schools, and working with the Whole Child.

After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up by talking about the fear that exists now, for returning to a regular school program when so much has shifted during this remote learning time.

04 Apr 2020Season 1 Episode 29: New Horizons00:35:44

In Episode 29 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about the New Horizons that are emerging with new learning experiences becoming available to students through E-Learning platforms. The team talks about all the different ways that this new experience has been described, from distance ed, to remote learning and e-learning - Chey and Pav feel like the learning that is currently happening with students in this climate is more about crisis management than learning.

The duo goes over several different ways that they are thinking about tackling their new online learning environment - what kinds of work will they offer their students, what will be the expectations from the learning that they do. They discuss what assessment will look like, what evaluation might look like, and what sorts of things teachers should avoid that might cause them undue stress.

Chey and Pav discuss the fact that all teachers lie on a particular spectrum when it comes to their experience with technology, and not everyone is on a level playing field, and therefore students will be in different places with their abilities with online learning. Because of all these factors, it cannot be expected that all teachers and all students will be able to master these new environments for learning readily.

The Dynamic Duo introduces Christine Ravesi-Weinstein, High School Assistant Principal from Massachusetts for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, as she talks about advocating for mental health strategies for student struggling with anxiety and depression.

In Episode 91 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about the ways in which they have been using spreadsheets, more specifically Google Sheets, to document student progress and monitoring goals. The presentation of a unique circumstance this past year and a half has forced educators to alter their practice, and this is one way that Chey and Pav have evolved their practice to encompass the use of spreadsheets. In this way, feedback and assessment in the virtual space, but also in the physical space, have become very prominent. The dynamic duo highlights that spreadsheets offer them with flow, organization and an opportunity to monitor the advancement of explicit learning skills that have been taught in class!

11 Jan 2020Season 1 Episode 17: #OneWord202000:30:19

In Season 1 Episode 17, Chey and Pav come back from Holiday Hiatus to record their first full-length episode of 2020, with the topic of #OneWord2020, an idea they came across on Twitter not too long ago. In this Episode, Chey and Pav reflect on their One Word, which is "Us." Pav talks about how the journey for the Staffroom began on Twitter about 6 months ago, and concepts like #OneWord2020 were totally new to them. They had only just come across the whole idea a few weeks prior to the new year, and thought it was a wonderful idea, and something they could definitely get involved with. Chey and Pav thought that the word "Us" best encapsulated their partnership from the beginning of their podcasting journey, but also captured the inclusion of their professional learning community on Twitter as well. Going forward, they also want it to include everyone else in the field of education; administration, caretaking staff, office staff, occasional teachers - everyone that is involved in creating the perfect environment, and the ideas and philosophies behind the field of teaching altogether.

Pav talks about using the One Word as a Mantra to meditate on for the year. This is how she presented the concept to her class, and was a way to be able to show her students the way to really be intentional with the word over the course of the year. Chey brings up the fact that the word should be a way to define a person's mindset over the course of the year, and also beyond.

The pair talk about some of the words they came across from other people on Twitter. Pav talks about a word that fellow podcaster, Michael Earnshaw presented in his blog: "Water." Chey talks about a favourite word from our 3 Enlightened Minutes guest Tony Coppola, which was "Punchline."

Chey and Pav introduce their 3 Enlightened Minutes Segment, in which Tony talks about his journey to a new teaching philosophy, and finding the Joy in teaching.

The duo talks about how they incorporated #OneWord2020 in their own classrooms, and gave some examples of some of the great words they came across in their classes.

22 Aug 2020Season 1 Episode 49: Are You A Helicopter Teacher?00:40:52

In Episode 49 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about an article they read called "The Curse of Helicopter Teaching" by Penny Kittle and Kelly Gallagher. In this article, the authors talk about this concept of "Helicopter Teaching" - the act of teaching involving a lot of coddling of students, providing them with explicit lists and step-by-step instructions with regards to writing, specifically. Chey and Pav talk about some of their key takeaways from the article, including their thoughts on the process of Helicopter Teaching, as well as how they can see it being a part of teachers' practice (often unknowingly) and what they sometimes do to be steering clear of it.

Pav talks in detail about how this concept of Helicopter Teaching can be universally applied to other areas of the curriculum, and she has most often seen it in Mathematics. Chey discusses how the concept of Helicopter Teaching can be compared to helicopter parenting, and also Lawnmower Teaching, or parenting. They go on to discuss many other parts of the article, which can be read here: https://flip.it/oEzhYZ

Chey and Pav introduce Monsieur Steve, Grade 3 French Immersion teacher from Toronto, Ontario, Canada for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Steve talks about the ways in which the classroom, starting at the primary level, can be made to be a fully inclusive, safe and welcoming environment for all students.

After the 3 Enlightened Minutes segment, Chey and Pav wrap up by briefly reviewing their reflections on Helicopter Teaching. They think about the ways they might have lent themselves to being Helicopter Teachers, or perhaps how they've emerged from that way of teaching over the years.

In Episode 102 of The Chey and Pav Show, the Dynamic Duo reflect on a specific item of clothing that has caused so much stir among educators in the school setting - and that is the hooded sweatshirt. 11 Jul 2020Season 1 Episode 43: Where do we get Inspiration?00:43:23

In Episode 43 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about where they find sources of inspiration for their Podcast episodes. They discuss two particular sources, a current events curating app called Flipboard, and an app that allows for easy borrowing of ebooks and audiobooks from the public library called Libby.

Chey talks about his use of the Flipboard app. With this app he is able to select interests for the stories he sees on the board. Then he can flip through many articles and blog posts, opinion articles, editorials to be able to put together a "magazine" of his own. This magazine can be made public or it an be private, or shared with a select few individuals. It becomes a great way for Chey and Pav to be able to share articles with each other, which offer lots of discussion topics for the podcast.

Pav talks about the about the ability to borrow ebooks and audiobooks from the public library system using an app called Libby. Overdrive is another common one that allows borrowing. The app allows you to put several books on hold, and several can be borrowed at a time. It has made it easier to read many of the amazing books that are available for leadership and education. Pav talks about a few of the books that she has read.

Chey and Pav introduce Joey and Kerri, owners of 25/8 Coffee from Texas, for their 3 Enlightened Minutes segment. Joey and Kerri talk about their coffee company that gives back to teachers purchasing supplies for their classrooms.

05 Nov 2019S1EP9: The Two Kinds of Professional Development00:30:51

In this episode of The Staffroom with Chey and Pav, the team talks about a topic that usually has many people unenthused - Professional Development. They discuss the different types of traditional, top-down PD and compare them to more effective and independent ways of researching and implementing new theories of pedagogy - and that is Self-directed professional development. They talk about the peaks and downfalls of each form of professional development, and also how they can be made more effective. In this episode, Chey and Pav feature, for the first time, a new segment called "Three Enlightened Minutes" - where they feature an educator they have met along their journey of podcasting. During the segment, educators tell their story - about what their cause, a topic they are passionate about, or perhaps a special project or endeavour they are proud of. In this episode’s “3 Enlightened Minutes” Chey and Pav feature Allison Carmichael, originator of Second2Arrow, and huge promotor of Mental Health strategies for teachers. Chey and Pav also discuss some fun anecdotes of their experiences with different types of Professional Development. To wrap up their episode, they talk about how top-down PD can be made to be more effective and how teachers can find their own passion projects in order to improve their own pedagogy, and what different routes they can take to improve their learning.

The conversation takes us into anti-oppressive and anti-racist language use, intergenerational trauma, and the inclusive or exclusive words that teachers use in the classroom. They refer to several anecdotes and experiences from their own lives and teaching careers, and also refer back to conversations had with PLN members. Look for Lise Farquhar's blog post on this topic at CheyandPav.com/blog!

Chey and Pav referred to a few articles during the episode. Read them here:

12 Jun 2021EP90: How Do We Talk About Racism and Oppression with Students?00:53:57

In Episode 90 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about the importance of talking to students about racism and oppression, and offer strategies on how to introduce some of the heavy topics and conversations. Chey and Pav discuss the ways in which we can do this in a way that isn't reactive or performative, and makes an impact with students. They discuss ways in which educators can honour and celebrate the identities of students, and keep the conversations local and as close to the community as possible. We must also attempt to embed the conversation everywhere we can within the curriculum and school environment, always coming at the conversation with an asset lens, and not a deficit.

01 Feb 2020Season 1 Episode 20: Explicit Teaching vs. Problem Based Learning00:30:45

In Episode 20 of Season 1, Chey & Pav discuss the benefits of Explicit Teaching Strategies and Problem Based Learning Strategies. They talk about why it is important to understand that it is necessary to use both aspects in order to run a good program in class. Students are not able to fully process the rich tasks until they have enough of their foundational skills covered.

Chey and Pav refer back to an article they read, to which the link is provided below. In the article, the author, Andrew J. Martin talks about how it is possible to teach the basics and attack problem based learning at the same time. Teachers can effectively do this by using Load Reduction instruction.

With this principle, teachers use a very specific method to optimally teach a foundational skill - through lots of guided practice and feedback, until the skill is stored in the long term memory, and thus does not need to be processed each and every time it is utilized in a problem based scenario.

The topic is important as there has been long-standing debate about whether Explicit teaching is more important than the Problem based approach - and so Chey and Pav ensure to stress that both must work in conjunction with one another in to have more effective teaching.

Chey and Pav welcome James Tucker, teacher from Costa Rica, as their 3 Enlightened Minutes guest - and he talks about the exact same topic: the importance of Explicit teaching alongside Problem Based Learning.

Chey and Pav end the episode with some anecdotal stories from their own experience in the classroom.

06 Feb 2022Setting Up A Culture of Reading - 10501:00:10

In Episode 105, Chey and Pav question how teachers can go beyond traditional language arts programming in order to establish meaningful connections to reading in all areas of the curriculum. Creating a "culture of reading" goes beyond the ritualistic and hierarchical reading programs that we have been accustomed to teaching. It involves incorporating reading in its many forms daily and in all areas of the curriculum. It involves going beyond the science to encompass a balanced approach. Chey and Pav talk about their experiences with establishing reading culture in their classrooms, with some fun anecdotes along the way.

06 Jun 2020Season 1 Episode 38: Reflecting on Anti-Racism00:48:33

In Episode 38 of the Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav reflect on the events of the past week, starting with the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and how it really changed the course of conversations in many spheres, including within education. Chey and Pav touch on many subtopics, starting with the discussion about Voice; specifically their own voice. Chey and Pav recognize that they have the privilege of a platform, and they intend to use it in every way they possibly can. They also talk about being able to amplify the voices of others, namely the marginalized individuals around us. Chey and Pav then move on to talk about what anti-racist conversation looks like in the classroom. They discuss the hesitancy that they experienced this past week from their own students, and possibly why they may have experienced this. They also discuss the challenge of not being in front of their students at this time, and having discussions with their students sitting with them in the room.

Chey and Pav talk about the pace at which they can engage with their students, and even with others with respect to the conversations that need to be had. They talk about what it looks like to have the difficult conversations, and then have to move on to the action portion. They need to be able to move past the difficult stages of anger and discomfort and then move on the action part of change. They wrap up by talking about the long work that lies ahead of them. There is a lot that needs to be done. If society is failing, then somewhere along the way, education is failing. There is much work to be done.

Chey and Pav wrap up by giving a few takeaways from the episode. They highlight the 5 main areas that were discussed and highlight that the difficult conversations are the first step, and then the action in the classrooms must begin.

Lots of great discussion on how books are chosen, the complementary activities to go along with it, and how to adapt for the different environments we might be teaching in. 26 Jun 2021EP92: Have we Bridged the Equity Gap During the Pandemic? 00:43:11

In Episode 92 of The Staffroom Podcast, Chey and Pav talk about bridging equity gaps in school communities over the past year and a half during the Covid-19 Pandemic. The past year has been a challenging one, and also has provided educators with many opportunities to bring students forward in terms of access to technology and providing specific professional development for teachers. Chey and Pav offer many insights with respect to their stance on this idea. What are some key takeaways from Episode 92? Don't slow down - keep looking for inequities. Don't take what Chey and Pav offer as the end of the conversation - keep the conversation going by reading more, and engaging in other conversations about bridging the equity gap. Also, let's stop saying "we need to go back to normal." The landscape has changed.
