08 Jun 2022 | 006: Geoff Castellucci: Beyond Basso Profundo - Part II | 00:45:49
This is Part II of our conversation with musician, bass singer, and arranger, Geoff Castellucci. Last week, we started to brush just the surface of what makes Geoff Castellucci so incredible. We talked about his origins and how he began singing with members of VoicePlay way back in middle school. We also discussed some of his role models and he’s able to manage time between his passion and his family life. Plus, we took our first plunge into understanding how he learned to make sounds so low they can cause the screws in your furniture to come loose. In this episode, we continue our discussion around subharmonics and its origins. We’ll also take a closer look at his recording tools and tips, including one of the voice tools nearest and dearest to my heart – straw singing. I also particularly love how Geoff gave us so many details about his recording process. Every singer has a different instrument but we all have to figure out how to record that instrument well. Geoff’s understanding of what works best for him can be applied to many others. Finally, we have some extra fun questions at the end, including which roles he’d most like to play in the future and how many marriage proposals he has received!

02 Nov 2022 | 027: Peter Hollens: Creative Entrepreneur - Part I | 00:52:24
While many singers only need to think about singing one line and maybe a few harmonies, Peter has to think about singing tons of lines. Just imagine the additional time it takes for him to create a song because he is the whole band. His songs are also released with music videos of high production value. His channel has been going strong since its debut in 2011, it’s amazing how he’s able to keep up his pace – even with a team in place. Now actively taking a role beyond singing, Peter offers consulting and advising services for creators and creative companies. Today, Peters talks about his influences and mentors, how he’s able to release music videos consistently, and his process of producing high-quality videos. In this episode, you will hear:

27 Jul 2022 | 013: Alissa White-Gluz: The Queen Beast - Part I | 01:04:43
Imagine the powerful and practically magical presence of Elsa combined with the animal-loving nature of Snow White. That’s Alissa White-Glutz, the lead vocalist of the death metal band Arch Enemy. Known for harsh, distorted, aggressive, and intense tones, Alissa takes pride in a healthy lifestyle, practicing veganism, and nurturing positivity all around. Alissa has a scary video game character called “Queen Beast” modeled after her. She also is an adept clean vocal singer, talented not only at creating beautiful lyrics and melodies but also adept at harmonizing and producing her own music. Her music video outfits are some of the most extremely creative I’ve seen – evoking power, darkness, and aggression altogether in flashy sophistication. It’s amazing the influence that Patreon and Patrons can have on an artist. Patrons are the reason I initially heard Alissa’s music and that eventually led to this interview. 25 May 2022 | 004: Devin Townsend - Heavy Metal Genius and Life Philosopher - Part II | 00:46:01
Last week, we started to take a peek inside the incredible genius of Devin Townsend - an extreme metal singer, songwriter, and producer… and notably, a life philosopher as well. Devin’s on-stage persona may be larger-than-life, hardcore, and sometimes even extraterrestrial. Yet while getting to know him, I quickly realized Devin is also incredibly humble, transparent, and dedicated to bringing authenticity to everything he creates. In this episode, we continue our interview with Devin where he discusses some upcoming projects, studio gear, video games, favorite venues, and our quick bonding moment over stuffed animals! One of the highlights of our conversation is how Devin views the journey of discovering one’s voice as something that goes hand in hand with self-discovery where we learn to accept ourselves – and part of accepting ourselves is also accepting our limitations. This is contrary to how we’re all sold in society right now where there’s that pressure of being perfect when we all know we’re not. Therefore, being able to say you’re not perfect is okay. You just have to do your best and when you make a mistake, learn from it and don’t beat yourself up. Learning how to fail efficiently is the only way to move forward.

How does one growl and scream with so much passion, yet also make these vocalizations without hurting anything? Well, it turns out that our guest today, Lzzy Hale, is extremely technically proficient when it comes to using those techniques. Lzzy Hale is the lead singer and guitar player of the Grammy Award-winning rock band and my heavy music idol, Halestorm. Gifted with powerful and aggressive yet effortless vocals, Lzzy indeed embodies what it means to be a strong rocker chic. Being so nervous and excited going into this interview, I already had immense respect for this awesome chic, not to mention how I was fangirling over Lzzy’s achievements and the female empowerment that she represents, sharing her love with the world. Listen in as we take a deep dive into how Lzzy Hale creates powerful, passionate, and aggressive vocal lines with deliberate attention to vocal technique, making her singing in actuality feel effortless. 17 May 2022 | 003: Devin Townsend - Heavy Metal Genius and Life Philosopher - Part I | 00:45:04
Have you ever wondered what goes on in the bizarre genius of an extreme metal singer, songwriter, and producer? Devin Townsend, known to many as “Hevy Devy,” was one of my earlier introductions to metal on YouTube. He quickly became one of my most beloved because of his wide range of vocal styles from musical theater to hardcore screaming, all while contouring some of the most expressive vocal lines I’ve heard. Having released more than 25 albums, Devin has been given the title “The Hardest Working Person in Metal.” Also a total nerd, Devin’s concerts often feature an extraterrestrial puppet named Ziltoid the Omniscient, and he occasionally writes songs about Disney. Our conversation on singing technique took a different turn than I expected as we went down the philosophical route, becoming one of the most transparent conversations I’ve ever had with a singer. We talked about the power of meditation in rewriting your inner dialogue around criticism, how nature enhances the creative process, and embracing your vulnerability versus living up to the expectations we set as professionals in the recording studio and in our live performances.

07 Sep 2022 | 019: Will Ramos: Make Weird Noises - Part I | 00:59:44
Imagine a goblin meeting a Nazgul, and together they decided to sing an epic opera using only harsh vocals. That’s what our guest today, Will Ramos sounds like. Will is the lead harsh vocalist of the deathcore band, Lorna Shore – and the sounds he makes are almost unreal! Many traditional singing teachers would point to his grunts and gurgles and say that he’s destroying his voice – but he isn’t. We actually decided to put a camera down his throat, and surprisingly, it was even more amazing than I had anticipated. Will engaged multiple areas of his vocal tract, from false folds to aryepiglottic. At one point, his throat even constricted so much that it looked like a black hole trying to suck the camera down. Whoa! But the most fascinating thing from putting a camera down Will’s throat was the asymmetry we found, where there’s a twisting motion that happens inside his larynx. It’s likely part of what contributes to Will’s unique sound. In this episode, you will hear:

06 Jul 2022 | 010: Brent Smith - Healthy Body, Healthy Voice - Part II | 01:02:46
This is Part II of the interview with Shinedown frontman, Brent Smith. Brent’s easygoing yet direct manner comes across throughout our entire conversation. He is truly a rockstar who has figured out life balance despite his massive touring and having a family. Last week, we started to unveil why it’s essential for Brent to train like an athlete. The more I get to speak with incredible singers like him, the more I’m convinced that you can’t separate the health of the person from the health of their voice. After all, your voice is in your body so it’s not surprising that Brent now trains himself like an athlete. In this episode, Brent talks about their upcoming album, Planet Zero, which releases this Friday, July 1. We’ll also take a closer look at his influences such as Chris Cornell, discuss the impact of COVID on his music, and answer some juicy Patron questions.

This is Part II of our conversation with Dream Theater’s lead singer James LaBrie. Last week, we began what seems like one of the most transparent conversations I’ve ever had about vocal injury and how a professional singer like him can recover and continue to create great music. Today, we continue the discussion as James talks about what he does right before a show, his support system, and some vocal idols. We also touch a bit on work-life balance as well as dive into some extra spicy Patron questions at the end! It’s amazing how James takes care of his voice and how he is continuously inspired by other artists. Learning about how he overcame a traumatic vocal injury and how he hasn’t let that stop him from continuing to produce incredible music was truly inspiring. Finally, his advice, especially on vocal health, is just pure gold.

If you've never experienced the glory of your entire room rumbling as if a sonic earthquake had struck, and noticed that the screws and your shells were starting to come loose, then you haven't heard Geoff Castellucci on an adequate speaker system. Known for his ability to sing mind-boggling bass notes that are so low even some keyboards can't contain, Geoff is the low voice in the a cappella group VoicePlay. He also releases his own covers with multiple vocal layers which demonstrate his massive range, including high notes you never would have thought such a low voice could produce. Geoff also arranges and produces and creates fantastic music videos. In today's episode, Geoff shares his voice technique, specifically, how he’s able to extend his low notes so far, what he does to record pristine vocal layers in his studio, and what makes a great collaborator.

Interestingly, this episode is the first time they’re meeting face-to-face. This week, we're going to continue the story by discussing how sound can heal, which straws are best for singers, and how placement can be helpful for extending your range. They also explain why they don't want to go to shows when not on tour. This episode is filled with great energy coming from their first time meeting, making it a fun and light episode to listen to! 16 Nov 2022 | 029: Tatiana Shmayluk: Growls and Giggles - Part I | 00:52:10
Tatiana Shmayluk is the lead singer of the Ukrainian metalcore band, Jinjer. But don’t let that trick you into thinking that she’s a gentle performer. Tatiana packs a punch with her vocals – both clean and harsh. In fact, she was the first female singer that I’ve ever heard going into full death growl mode. The song started off with a groovy, almost jazzy punk feel, and then dropped into this intensely heavy section. And at that moment out of Tatiana, a boss monster just seemed to spring. It’s insane! It’s also one of the reasons I just nerd out about voice science. In this episode, learn about how she visualizes her voice. Also, be sure to tune in to the second part of this series next week as Tatiana shares how she determines if a growl is good or bad. We’ll also talk about touring and how to support the band during these incredibly tough times.

It’s amazing how a lot of albums have this continuity. And he explains how everything in the album should have the same vibe because they can only shine if they’re bound together. 10 Aug 2022 | 015: Maria Franz: Voice of Our Ancestors - Part I | 00:38:43
No one knows what music from the Bronze or Iron Ages sounds like, but the musical group Heilung presents a version of what music in that era could have sounded like. Their music is often described as “amplified history” and it evokes something primal in audiences around the world. In this two-part episode, we sit down with Maria Franz, the lead female singer of Heilung, as well as two other bands, Euzen and Songleikr. We shared a cup of tea while chatting about how they’re creating intriguing sounds, fantasy roleplaying, and the banshee wails. Maria’s vocal creativity had already blown me away, and I was so eager to ask her about how she had developed such a unique sound and vocal technique. Maria decided to quit smoking to help preserve her voice. It’s incredible how much anything that affects a person’s body will also affect the voice. After all, the voice is IN our bodies, so anything you ingest or do will, in some way, work itself into your vocal folds. Allow Heilung’s music to sweep you away into another time and moment in history and grab a copy of their new album, Drif, which releases on August 19. In this episode, you will hear:

16 May 2022 | 001: Elizabeth Zharoff - Getting to Know Your Host with Julia Nilon - Part I | 01:05:01
Curious about the world of opera? Today, I’m sharing my journey from literally singing on a tractor to carving out a professional career in opera. To begin our interview series, we’re going to flip the table as I will be put in the proverbial hot seat. While I do enjoy performing and occasionally taking the spotlight, it’s much more comfortable for me to shine the spotlight on someone else. Turning my own questions to myself felt a bit daunting so I decided to ask my friend, vocal geek colleague, and fellow YouTuber, Julia Nilon to help out. Julia and I share a deep fascination for music and vocal function, and we’ve had similar yet unique journeys in academic studies, voice teaching, and YouTube growth. And so, if anyone would be able to dig into my history and pick out the little bizarre tidbits that other people wouldn’t think of as bizarre, then it would be Julia. There’s more to being a professional opera singer than just learning how to sing. Aside from getting the right education, you have to consider the costs involved, the different languages you have to learn and the cultures you need to immerse into, so you can get your message across through the power of your voice.

It’s time for yet another episode of healthy screaming with Will Ramos, the lead vocalist of the deathcore band, Lorna Shore. Last week, we looked at how Will Ramos nurtured his voice to sound like a Nazgul. Today, we continue the conversation by talking more about how to NOT mess up your voice while screaming. Learn some tips on healthy screaming, relaxing to improve technique, and how scatting can improve deathcore. Will values taking care of his voice just as much as an opera singer would. It’s also so much fun to hear him talk about cross-training in Tuvan throat singing as one of the ways that he takes care of his voice. Oh, and did I tell you that we actually put a camera down Will’s throat to see what it’s like now after years of heavy screaming? The result might just surprise you! In this episode, you will hear:

24 Aug 2022 | 017: Simone Simons: Life Balance as a Metal Mother - Part I | 01:00:46
Simone Simons may look like a supermodel – she has the blog, photographs and beauty partnerships to back it up – but she is much more than just the face of the Dutch metal band, Epica. Simone has a voice and a lifestyle to be reckoned with. Simone’s vocals are widely recognized for both their beauty and power. As the frontwoman of a symphonic metal band with death metal tendencies, Simone brings versatility in singing styles, combining both classical and contemporary technique. In this episode, we discuss how she got into singing in the first place, how she blended classical and contemporary techniques, and how she kept her infant son quiet while recording. I also wanted to discuss something I have recently experienced as well – how pregnancy and being a mother actually affected the voice. And so, this is also a bonding conversation between two new moms! Epica will be touring in North and South America throughout the rest of 2022, and throughout Europe in early 2023. They also recently released their new album, Omega, available on your regular streaming services or purchase it online at epica.nl. In this episode, you will hear:

19 Oct 2022 | 025: Myles Kennedy: Channeling Monsters of the Mind - Part I | 00:55:02
Many people say that having a classical vocal foundation will set any singer up for success. Even as an opera singer, I don’t know if this is always true, but our guest today, Myles Kennedy, has some of the best vocal techniques any metal or rock singer could have. Not only did he study the classical vocal foundation, he still continues to use it. Myles is an outstanding songwriter and guitar player who has collaborated with many artists. As the lead singer of Alter Bridge or in his work with Slash and The Conspirators, Myles makes stupid-tough vocal passages sound like a walk in the park. In this episode, we delve into all aspects of life, philosophy, philanthropy, and yes, music too! Myles discusses how he applied his jazz education and classical training to rock and metal. Due to his outstanding technique, Myles can navigate the trickiest of vocal circumstances with vocal elegance, which is quite evident in his recently released Alter bridge album called Pawns & Kings. 15 Jun 2022 | 007: James LaBrie - Triumph Over Vocal Injury - Part I | 01:02:19
Dream Theater is legendary for its complex, progressive music, and James LaBrie, their lead singer, is legendary for his ability to weave a melody over rapidly evolving time signatures and musical textures. James has a massive range and a distinctive, gathered sound which cuts through to deliver his message. Not only does James sing complex music so well, but he actually overcame one of the most difficult things any singer ever faces – a serious vocal injury. In 1994, James was stricken with a severe case of food poisoning that led to a vocal hemorrhage, which is essentially a blood vessel rupturing in the vocal folds. It was the most horrific thing that could happen to any singer. Vocal health is closely intertwined with a singer’s identity and self-worth, and experiencing the trauma that James went through would have caused many singers to quit. But he kept going and is still releasing albums, including his new solo album “Beautiful Shade of Gray” which came out on May 20, 2022. James’s determination to continue and press through for the band and his attention to recovery and vocal health now make him a glowing inspiration. In this episode, you will hear:

Last week, we started off our interview series by putting me – your host – in the interviewee’s seat. We invited Julia Nilon, my fellow vocal nerd and YouTube colleague to do the interviewing and dig into my past. We wrapped up last week by talking about vocal damage and recovery. Today, we’ll continue the chat about vocal health, especially focusing on how to build your voice. We discuss how to protect your voice and what exercises and tools can help you build up your vocal capabilities. We also talk about life as a YouTuber and why I actually decided to start a YouTube channel, why I got into AI and video games, and the huge role The Charismatic Voice community plays in my life and in the lives of other people, bringing all of us together – through music.

21 Sep 2022 | 021: Allen/Olzon: Veteran Duo - Part I | 01:05:58
Today’s conversation is made twice the fun as we feature two veteran vocalists, Russell Allen and Anette Olzon, who are legends on their own. Russell Allen is known for his work with Symphony X and the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Anette Olzon is known for her work with Nightwish. Russell and Anette recently collaborated and released their second album together, titled Army of Dreamers. Yet, it’s funny how these two fantastic artists had never met in person and never had a conversation before. And the way that they grow on each other as our tea time progresses is delightful to witness. Also, I find it fascinating how fame affects people differently. Both Russell and Anette have toured the world. Although they’ve seen a lot in their career, they both seem to particularly love the moments at home, in peace and quiet, with their family. Russell is also creating a video game and he’s happy to have his kid test it out! In this episode, you will hear:

She also dishes out some singing tips like using eyebrows to get to that high note and how she memorizes ALL THOSE LYRICS. This episode also shows so many facets of pregnancy and being a new mom that most people wouldn’t normally consider. 29 Jun 2022 | 009: Brent Smith - Healthy Body, Healthy Voice - Part I | 01:08:01
Addiction is something that plagues all kinds of people – especially creatives or performers who are feeling constant pressure. Brent Smith was on top of the lead singer world, fronting Shinedown, a rock band with 17 singles that have hit #1 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. And amidst all that, he still dealt with a lot of self-doubt. Brent started singing at four years old and began writing songs at 10 years old. By 15 years old, he was heavily influenced by grindcore and punk rock. In this episode, Brent shares how life drastically changed for him the moment he made the decision to improve his health and how he started singing better than ever – and with confidence. If you’ve ever turned to a substance or perhaps used some kind of denial to help you through a performance, this is the interview you need to hear. We’re also going to talk about unicorns, converting hard rockers to opera lovers, weight and singing, how Brent’s impromptu performance became a staple of his career, and how the band trains on the road.

We talked about the artists that piqued her curiosity in harsh vocals and how she developed her monster-esque screams. We also discussed her writing process and how deadlines can be more inspirational than diamonds. This week, we’re going to continue the story by taking a look deeper into her growls, to better understand how she delineates between a good growl and a bad growl.
