07 Oct 2020 | Camille Radford 'Rainbow vlg warriors, poetry, black girl magic and cats' | 01:15:12
This week Michelle speaks with Camille Radford a small Esty business owner from Maryland, Baltimore all about the inspiration behind her faux locks business, Rainbow VLG Warriors. Camille designs and creates faux hand-rolled and dyed wool dreadlocks using sustainably sourced wool from a farm in North Carolina. She initially wanted to find a hairstyle that wasn’t damaging or brought tension to her scalp, so she started experimenting with making vibrant and colourful locks. The locks proved to be quite popular on her Instagram account and people were reaching out to ask where they could buy the hair, so the idea was formed to create a business selling the locks. But for Camille, the locks aren’t just about making colourful hair for people to buy. They are used as a statement to represent emotions, causes, and events such as; Pride, Breast Cancer Awareness, and Political statements. Camille is also the co-author of a poetry book called Cookies and Cream created with her college roommate and co-author Crystal Durachko. She talks to us about the inspiration behind creating the book of poems and a brief insight into some of the poems in the book. We talk about what black girl magic means to Camille, some of the stigmas about wearing natural hair, and creating protective hairstyles. She is also a cool cat mum to her cute care called Killmonger Toothless Radford-Jackson, and she shares the adorable story of how they first met. Camille also shares a personal story of experiencing panic attacks and talks about Killmonger being an emotional support pet for her and her mom. This is one cute kitty story not to be missed! This week Michelle speaks with Iona Allan, she is an Australian violinist and avid cat lover, who also happens to be one of our cat sitters at Chatty Cats Care. Iona moved to London 3 years ago to start a master's degree in music and has been performing and teaching violin. She grew up with a variety of animals in Australia including a bird, guinea pig, and finally, after many years of begging her mother, on her 14th birthday, she got her dream pet, a cat! Iona's beautiful cat Dusty was a rescue and in such poor condition her fur looked like it was covered in dust, hence the inspiration behind the name! She needed a lot of special attention and many vet trips as a kitten to get her healthy. When Iona has to leave Dusty with her mum to move to London it was one of the hardest things she has ever done. Sadly Dusty passed away just over a year ago when she was visiting back home. Iona's experience and love for cats made her an exceptional candidate for Chatty Cats Care and now she looks after our sweet Chatty Cats. 26 Aug 2020 | Aisha Hussain 'Feline Friends International' Street Cat Rescue | 00:51:47
This week Michelle speaks to Aisha Hussain all about her cat rescue mission to help the colonies of stray cats living in the UAE with friend Evelyn, who lives in Canada. Evelyn has also been working tirelessly to help stray cats internationally and together they are helping so many cats. Aisha is a British teacher currently living in the UAE with her husband. She quickly noticed a vast local problem with sick stray cats and wanted to take action to do something about this. So many of our fellow cat lovers and owners often feed cats on holiday abroad and whilst this is a beautiful sentiment there is a bigger problem that needs to be addressed. Aisha has been working hard to ensure that colonies of cats aren’t rapidly multiplying or catching diseases, especially living in such hot and harsh conditions. The two women aim to ensure that stray cats are set up on a neutering program; receive health checks, provide starving cats with food and water, and help cats find a foster or forever home. So many cats are testing FIV and parvo positive, which is heartbreaking. Aisha has been doing this work alone thus far and now it’s time for us as a cat-loving community to step up and help support. Aisha's sister called Henna has set up a go fund me page titled ‘Feline Friends International’ https://www.gofundme.com/f/4jjs4d-feline-friends-international so please visit the page, read what they’re doing and donate. Every little donation helps, so please help to save a cat's life today. We have set up a special PRIZE GIVEAWAY in this episode. To win listen out for the special code word in this episode and email us at michelle@chattycatscare.co.uk for a chance to win.
