Last week I explained why SIBO- Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth – is now considered to be the leading cause of IBS symptoms.

 

This is a situation where unwelcome pathogenic strains of bacteria thrive and grow in the small intestines, feeding and fermenting food (that has not had a chance to be digested yet) creating bloating, distension, discomfort and pain.  The key strains of bacteria lead to either loose diarrhoea type stools, harder constipation bowel movements or a mixture of the two.

 

It’s amazing to think this SIBO phenomenon was unheard of twenty years ago and has only really become more recognised by IBS sufferers in recent years. Yet considering the vast numbers of people who suffer with IBS, most doctors are still unaware of it.

 

So how do you know if it is SIBO and what steps can you take to help your symptoms?

Study finds gluten leads to brain inflammation in mice

 

A small scale study (reported in the Journal of Neuroscience in July), showed a direct correlation between the intake of gluten and brain inflammation in mice.

 

Whilst this was a small scale study with less than 100 mice, these findings are of particular interest to researchers as mice have very similar nervous, digestive and circulatory system to humans. Of course, further studies need to be conducted to see if gluten has a similar impact with human brains, but we should not ignore these findings.

On 9th February 2023 the World Wildlife Fund produced a report in conjunction with Knorr identifying plants that help to protect the planet whilst also being beneficial for human health: “50 foods for healthier people and a healthier planet”.

The report goes into far more detail than just this – and I don’t personally agree with all the statements made- but I am always keen to ensure I am not only aware of a healthy diet, but one that will also help sustain humans and the planet long-term!

CoQ10 and healthy ageing

If you’re over 50, vegetarian and/or taking statins, then you may be surprised to discover you may be lacking a crucial nutrient linked to healthy ageing and longevity.

CoQ10 (coenzyme Q10) is a substance made naturally in the body, but as you grow older, levels start to decline. Statins also block the pathway for the production of CoQ10.

Crucially, CoQ10 is required for two key activities in the body. First it helps in the energy production cycle and second it is a potent antioxidant, protecting cells and organs from oxidative stress. Is coffee good for gut health?

Today I was asked to speak about coffee and gut health on Kaye Adam’s BBC Radio Scotland show. This follows the media interest in the announcement that coffee is good for your gut. So did I agree?

The scientists behind the Zoe app and study have discovered that those drinking coffee tend to have a healthier gut microbiome compared to those who do not. The suggestion is to drink three cups of coffee a day to deliver these benefits.

More Herbs Less Salt is an American Awareness day on 29th August. 

It is well recognised that we should be careful with our salt consumption. When we talk about salt, we are referring to sodium chloride, common table salt. The recommended salt consumption over and above the salt we find in food is just 1 teaspoon. 

Salt (sodium) is recognised to be a contributor of high blood pressure as the body will hold on to additional fluid to dilute the sodium in your blood, this increases the pressure. Processed foods can increase the sodium consumption in your diet, and there is no need to add salt to your food most of the time.

Now - new research has shown that a diet high in salt can damage one of the important families of beneficial bacteria - Lactobacillus species. We know that a high sugar and high processed diet damages the delicate ecosystem of beneficial bacteria, and now we can add salt to this list too.

How to maximise prostate health

 

March is prostate cancer awareness month in the UK, to encourage men to become more aware of health problems they could develop, I wanted to use this awareness time to focus on my 7- step plan to maximise prostate health.

 

1 in 8 men in the UK are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, but for many more men a condition known as BPH (benign prostatic hypertrophy) is far more common with over 40% of over 50-year-olds and 80% of over 80-year-old men living with the condition.

 

In both instances, the prostate gland, which wraps around the urethra, becomes enlarged. And with that enlargement, the prostate presses on the urethra - the tube that carries urine from the bladder, causing symptoms. It can act like a clamp and impede the flow of urine.
