What does it take to stay relevant professionally and to get ahead today? This episode isn’t specific to the medical field but is extremely applicable regardless. You see with the ever changing dynamics of business and medicine, there are certain things we must do to grow and evolve with the times, and to place our brands in the best light.

I recently read two articles of general career advice that I felt dove-tailed into the topic of branding very nicely. The first was “To Create Your Own Luck, Do Any 1 of These 5 Things” by Jeff Haden and the second “How to Reimagine the Second Half of Your Career” by Jeff Gothelf.

In the first, the Mr. Haden discusses the phenomenon of luck as it pertains to entrepreneurship and business. So many successful people are either perceived as having had a “lucky” break or they themselves attribute their success to luck. How much of that “luck” was true coincidence and circumstance and how much relates to habits of behavior that successful people have developed? 

The second article is all about the ways in which to better and reimagine the second half of your career. Mr. Gothelf's core message was that to become "forever employable", no matter if that is for yourself with clients or for your employer you have to have a certain mindset and cultivate certain qualities.

What does it mean to be your “true” or “authentic” self in the workplace? One of my amazing listeners, Shelley, wrote in with a note about how she had been shying away from her own personal branding without realizing that she was hindering her upward mobility at work. She thought it was more authentic to stay quiet even though she knew that she was being passed over. Then, she had an a-ha moment. 

In recent years, there has been a push for employees and employers to be more ‘authentic’ and true to themselves in the workplace, but what does that really mean? What does it mean to be authentic?

In this episode, I share some views on this topic, and ask the important - but often controversial questions about whether/how the concept of authenticity can actually hold us back from what we really want (and what our ‘true self’ really wants is indeed part of our authenticity!). 

When viewed rigidly, being authentic to your “true” self could spell disaster for your career and your personal brand. It’s important to be authentic, and to keep a wide and adaptive view of what that really means. This is one of the core principles that we explore at the TransforMD Mastery Retreat - a special event for women physicians only offered once a year (with registration open right now - check it out!).

In the old days, you’d get assigned a work mentor, and that was that. More recently, there’s a lot of discussion about having a sponsor  in addition to a mentor, and savvy docs know the difference between those two types of allies (and why you need both).  However, it’s not sufficient to have just one or two people in your corner. Plus, it’s more effective to have several different types of people in your robust network to help you continue moving upward in your career - or to help you when you want to change completely

I was inspired to put together this episode after I received a message on LinkedIn from one of my very loose connections (someone I really don’t know at all) asking if I would be willing to mentor her as she navigates a career change. So, in thinking about mentoring someone for a career change, it’s helpful to consider more broadly the kind of people who can really help you.

I recently received a message from one of my students in the Industry Insider program thanking me for the program and letting me know that it was key to her landing a new job. This recent exchange was the inspiration for this podcast episode, because it was a great reminder of how important it is to leverage feedback opportunities and make the most of them! 

So often we leave good and bad feedback at the comment itself. We forget to dig deeper and find out additional information about the feedback, the person giving it, and ways we can use the feedback constructively. 

In this example, I could have just focused on the compliment and enjoyed feeling bubbly about it, but that would have been a missed opportunity.  Instead I asked her some follow up questions to try and dig a little bit deeper and gain more insight on exactly how the program helped her. Doing that helped me better understand who would benefit from my program and how, AND resulted in a tangible professional asset. Let me explain...

Last week we were discussing how you could use positive feedback to improve your work (whether that’s your  business or yourself as a professional) and how to create tangible business assets from the feedback you get. This week I want to share how you can use less than stellar feedback to build relationships, grow in your business and skills, and perhaps create even stronger business assets (really!). 


These two episodes are a great introduction into the ways that you can put feedback to good use in your business or practice, but if you’d like to go deeper, we get into this with lots of specific strategies and tactics in Modules 1 and 6 of The Branding Rx Course - be sure to check that out!


The first thing to remember is that no matter what kind of feedback you’re receiving, the person providing it is taking their time to tell you how they feel. Whether they intend to help you improve, or they’re sharing their disappointment with their own experience in mind, either way they’re invested in the conversation. They’re taking time and effort to share information and perspective, and this is a gift - so, remember to make them feel heard. 


All feedback is useful, whether you agree with it or not. Every bit of feedback can be used in different ways. It’s your job to keep track of the feedback you’re provided, think about it, and determine how to make it useful right now. 


Always remember to ask additional questions. Many times the issue with feedback is that it’s too general. Asking clarifying questions gives you a better chance to turn negative feedback into something actionable.


I’m not saying that you should incorporate every bit of feedback that you’re given. Instead, this episode will help you preserve relationships, ensure an enduring stream of feedback in the future, and determine which pieces of advice would actually help move you, your brand, or your business forward.

I recently had the opportunity to virtually attend the Pennsylvania Conference for Women and it was really enlightening. As I was listening to the speakers one in particular stood out to me because she got me to think about one of my favorite topics in an entirely new way. You know I’m all about professional branding - how others perceive you, and ultimately, promote you. This session was an excellent take on the same overall topic.  

The speaker was Charmaine McClarie, an executive coach focused on helping leaders get more visibility and get promoted. She was presenting her paradigm of 6 “Executive Success Principles” but there was one specifically that captured my attention. She said “stop auditioning for the role”. Essentially, she was making the case that lots of folks who get passed up for promotions and recognition at work aren’t fully owning their roles, and instead come across as if they are “auditioning” to be a leader.

As I was listening I couldn’t help but think of ways that you could stop auditioning and start showing leadership in your role. If you want more responsibility, opportunity, and visibility for your contributions, you’ve got to show up in a different way.

It’s not an earth-shattering comment, but it felt so very timely, because especially with COVID, I know that so many of you are not feeling valued. Many of you feel trapped, and even unsafe or expendable. That’s not OK.

Lots of people love their colleagues but generally don’t feel like they have a supportive work environment when it comes from the top. Your boss sets the tone for your workplace culture. He or she should be saying the right things, saying them often, and leading by example. 

*When I talk about ‘my boss’ in this episode, I mean either my actual boss, or another leader in an organization with which I am professionally affiliated. These are real statements, but I’m not intending to attribute all of them to any specific person.

Was there any bright side to 2020? To be sure, 2020 was pretty rough for a lot of reasons. With so much going on in the world that is inarguably terrible, it can be hard to focus on any silver lining from 2020. Yet, happiness experts and researchers agree that we should indeed look for and celebrate positive moments or events. 

Today’s episode comes from Kristen, a long-time friend and colleague of mine, asking a private Facebook group, “Tell me something you achieved 2020. Not even humble brag, modifier, good girl, downplaying, minimizing...just brag! You’ve earned it.” Indeed, well over 500 women physician members commented with their wins, large and small (myself included). They have many, many reasons to be proud. 

So I was inspired to start off The Career Rx 2021 by reflecting on my own wins from 2020. I’ll share with you four practices I implemented this past year that really made a difference. But they aren’t just wins for me - they each come with a nugget of wisdom I hope you can apply to your own life.  Start off 2021 by giving these some thought, and take this year to an entirely new ‘best’ level!
