12 Sep 2019 | The Art of the Email Broadcast | 00:51:38
What should I put in my email broadcast? This question is one we all face on a regular basis. You have an email list, but what do you do with it? This week, J. breaks down a recent email broadcast and explains why it was one of the most effective he’s ever sent. The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon share their struggles and successes as full-time authors, advice for improving your writing craft, and honest discussions of what it takes to build a successful career as an author. In this episode, you’ll discover:
Types of email broadcasts:
J.’s actual email Subject: That's what she said. Did you immediately hear Michael Scott's voice from The Office? That stupid gag always made me chuckle. In all seriousness, I've worked with hundreds of authors, and I tend to hear the same thing again and again. There's no shortage of writing advice available on the internet. Good advice. Great advice. But filtering it and then executing on those ideas is insurmountable for many of us. When I hear a client tell me, "I don't know where to begin," I immediately want to say, "That's what she said." I've heard it so many times. In the next few months, I want to create and build things that will help you become a career author, to live the author life. But I need your help. I need to know what you need. No catch, nothing for sale. Just hoping you'll take 5 minutes and fill out this anonymous survey. [link removed] Thanks for the help. I can't do this alone. And...that's what she said. Later, J. 28 Nov 2019 | Lean Launch vs. Fat Launch | 00:39:25
Lean Launch vs. Fat Launch is a tactic that every author should consider before publishing a title. Overesourcing a launch, using ads, taking advantage of a series can all be optimized to maximize exposure on the sales platforms. On the other hand, lean launch is a single release designed to test a market or demand without committing long-term. There is no right way to launch and Fat isn’t better than Lean or vice versa. It’s all about deciding what’s best given what you want to accomplish. The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon share their struggles and successes as full-time authors, advice for improving your writing craft, and honest discussions of what it takes to build a successful career as an author. Accounting for AuthorsAccounting for authors is something we’re asked about all the time. Special shout out to John Box for suggesting the conversation. “How do self-published authors handle their income? Both part-time and full-timers? Are authors setting up LLC's or the like? Is this something that we can do on our own? Or is there a respectable service out there that can help us?” These are all great questions. 06 Feb 2020 | The Three Story Method Influencer Series: Aristotle | 00:48:52
The Three Story Method Influencer Series: AristotleIn the first of this special 5-part series, Zach and J. examine Poetics by Aristotle and how those ideas have influenced modern storytelling. In addition, Zach asks J. how he incorporated Aristotle’s ideas in Three Story Method and the ways they apply to novelists. From Wikipedia: Aristotle's Poetics (Greek: Περὶ ποιητικῆς; Latin: De Poetica;[1] c. 335 BC[2]) is the earliest surviving work of dramatic theory and first extant philosophical treatise to focus on literary theory.[3] In it, Aristotle offers an account of what he calls "poetry" (a term that derives from a classical Greek term, ποιητής, that means "poet; author; maker" and in this context includes verse drama – comedy, tragedy, and the satyr play – as well as lyric poetry and epic poetry). They are similar in the fact that they are all imitations but different in the three ways that Aristotle describes:
In examining its "first principles", Aristotle finds two: 1) imitation and 2) genres and other concepts by which that of truth is applied/revealed in the poesis. His analysis of tragedy constitutes the core of the discussion.[4] Although Aristotle's Poetics is universally acknowledged in the Western critical tradition, "almost every detail about his seminal work has aroused divergent opinions".[5] The work was lost to the Western world for a long time. It was available in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance only through a Latin translation of an Arabic version written by Averroes.[6] The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon share their struggles and successes as full-time authors, advice for improving your writing craft, and honest discussions of what it takes to build a successful career as an author. 13 Feb 2020 | The Three Story Method Influencer Series: The Hero’s Journey | 00:45:03
The Three Story Method Influencer Series: The Hero’s JourneyIn the second of this special 5-part series, Zach and J. examine the Hero’s Journey as created by Joseph Cambpell and recreated by Christopher Vogler. They discuss how these ideas have influenced modern storytelling. In addition, Zach asks J. how he incorporated the Hero’s Journey in Three Story Method and the ways they impact novel writing. While some may believe that we’re transitioning out of the monomyth era, it’s still important to recognize the underlying story architecture that has become second nature for most of us. The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon share their struggles and successes as full-time authors, advice for improving your writing craft, and honest discussions of what it takes to build a successful career as an author. 20 Feb 2020 | The Three Story Method Influencer Series: The Virgin’s Promise | 00:48:04
The Three Story Method Influencer Series: The Virgin’s PromiseIn the third of this special 5-part series, Zach and J. examine the Virgin’s Promise developed by Kim Hudson. They discuss how these ideas will change modern storytelling. In addition, Zach asks J. how he incorporated the Virgin’s Promise in Three Story Method and the ways they impact novel writing. The Virgin’s Promise provides an alternative to the monomyth, a non-linear story archetype that accentuates the duality of feminine and masculine energy. Being open to new ideas and techniques can yield great results and add tools to the novelists toolbox. The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. 27 Feb 2020 | The Three Story Method Influencer Series: Story | 00:49:24
The Three Story Method Influencer Series: StoryIn the fourth of this special 5-part series, Zach and J. examine Story by Robert McKee. They discuss how his ideas changed the way Hollywood approached modern storytelling. In addition, Zach asks J. how he incorporated elements of Story in Three Story Method and the ways they impact novel writing. Although not strictly a methodology like the Hero’s Journey or Virgin’s Promise, McKee’s seminal work explores critical elements of storytelling such as plot vs. character, the importance of choice, and theme. Heavily influenced by many of the ideas in Story, J. and Zach take a deep dive into some of the more abstract concepts and explain how they relate to long-form storytelling. The Career Author Podcast is a podcast where co-authors J. Thorn and Zach Bohannon share their struggles and successes as full-time authors, advice for improving your writing craft, and honest discussions of what it takes to build a successful career as an author.
