24 Feb 2013The Candid Frame #175 - Brooke Shaden00:40:54
Brooke Shaden was born in March of 1987 in Lancaster, PA, USA. She grew up near the "Amish Country" until attending Temple University. Brooke was photographically born in December 2008 after graduating from Temple with two degrees: film and English. She now resides in Los Angeles, CA, USA with her husband and two cats.  She began creating self-portraits for ease and to have full control over the images, and has since grown into a self-portrait artist. Self portraiture for her is not autobiographical in nature. Instead, she attempts to place herself within worlds she wishes we could live in, where secrets float out in the open, where the impossible becomes possible.  Brooke works to create new worlds within her photographic frame. By using painterly techniques as well as the square format, traditional photographic properties are replaced by otherworldly elements. Brooke's photography questions the definition of what it means to be alive. http://brookeshaden.com/gallery/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Crewdson www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com

When it comes to portraits, people who are being their unique selves can result in the best photographs. Muir Vidler is a editorial/commercial photographer who makes the most of such opportunities in all of his work. You can see it showcased especially well in his project, Rebels Without a Pause where he photographs some of Britain’s aging rebels and Mavericks. 22 Jul 2013The Candid Frame #196 - Sam (Whittier Sam) Smotherman00:51:48
Sam (Whittier Sam) Smotherman is narrative street photographer from Los Angeles, who believes in the power of dialogue and that is what he tries to create through his images. Not just a dialogue between observers but within the whole process. He is not removed from his pictures, but chooses instead to speak where subjects often have no voice, making sure to give articulation to those who have not only shared their image, but their words. Photography helps him to define and connect him with the world and his surroundings in a way it does not when he is not shooting. It is not just about the seeing or feeling an image; he wants to be compelled to think. Conveying truth in his images is important and he looks for the beauty in the broken because that is often where the truth lies. Working to show the conditions of life on the margins, he wants all people to feel they can help make the human condition better by working for social justice and spiritual grace.  www.thecandidframe.com info@thecandidframe.com

Radcliffe strives to tell the stories of their victories and ills by bringing their voices to matte fibre paper.   Recently, Radcliffe began experimenting with interpretative photography, preferring to allow the abstract content within the frame to dictate the voice and purpose of the image. His Elements series focuses on the bold, austere, graphic and emotionally raw imagery, that is trapped behind a diffused lens. With painterly abilities, Radcliffe uses this diffused methodology to subtly awake the subconscious and expose the isolated figure or vision painted within a rhetorical frame.   Podcast Awards   Photographer Links:  Listener Intro: James Lee   Education Resources:   Candid Frame Resources   Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device. 23 Nov 2015TCF Ep. 300 - Lois Greenfield00:53:44
In her exuberant and explosive pictures, Lois Greenfield captures not just the lithe and acrobatic forms of dancers performing their art, but the purity and exhilaration of movement itself. Without tricks or manipulation of any kind, she catches fleeting and impossible moments in a style that is both lyrical and graphic. Greenfield has been compared with Eadweard Muybridge for his exploration of human locomotion and with Henri Cartier-Bresson for capturing the decisive moment. Unlike her predecessors however, her images depict but don’t refer to the “real” world. They are documents of her imagination. Beginning her career as a photojournalist, Greenfield covered the experimental dance movement scene for the Village Voice from 1973 to the mid 90’s. In 1982 she decided to open her own studio where she could control the lighting, and work with dancers in a collaborative environment. Her exploration of the expressive possibilities of photographed movement and her unique approach to photographing the human form in motion has radically redefined the genre and influenced a generation of photographers. Greenfield has created signature images for countless contemporary dance companies as well as commercial clients.  Her photographs have been featured in many magazines worldwide and exhibited internationally. She frequently gives lectures and offers workshops. Since 2014 Greenfield has been an Artist in Residence at NYU/Tisch Department of Dance and New Media. In 2015, She was honored with the Dance in Focus award in recognition of her ground-breaking contributions to the field. Her third book, “Lois Greenfield:Moving Still”, (Thames & Hudson, UK & Chronicle Books, USA) will be released in Fall 2015.   Order Lois Greenfield’s new book, Moving Still via Amazon and help support the show. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1452150206?creativeASIN=1452150206&linkCode=w00&linkId=BH7ROEXYRG72PIM4&ref_=as_sl_pc_qf_sp_asin_til&tag=thecanfra-20   Resources:   Lois Greenfield http://www.loisgreenfield.com   Sebastião Salgado http://www.amazonasimages.com Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device.   Click here to download for . 19 Feb 2018TCF Ep. 409 - Jeffery Saddoris01:01:54
Jeffery Saddoris is endlessly curious – about people, about creativity, about line and shape and color – and his personal and professional pursuits are driven by learning, discovering, imagining, listening, celebrating, and making. Years of practicing and teaching photography led Jeffery to realize that few people were talking about the why of creativity – the motivations and inspirations that fuel the work of photographers and other visual artists. He began the website as a way to showcase photographers’ creative inspiration through editorials, in-depth Spotlights, and a podcast series of one-on-one interviews. One of Jeffery’s interviews was with New York-based portrait photographer , who later invited Jeffery to become the co-host for his new weekly podcast . Jeffery often refers to himself as a “serial conversationalist” and podcasting has become an increasingly important platform for his lifelong interest in learning, exploring, communicating, and sharing about art and artists – between more than 5 years talking about photography on , hosting the 12-episode , and , his ongoing podcast of long-form conversations about creativity and how the creative process manifests itself across a wide range of genres and disciplines.   Resources: Download the free Candid Frame app for your favorite smart device. 17 Nov 2020TCF Ep. 539 - Hunter Barnes00:44:39
Hunter Barnes is a documentary photographer whose work captures aspects of culture and communities ignored by the mainstream and often misrepresented in the modern American narrative. Hunter trained in photochemistry and traditional photographic techniques. At a young age, he began a nomadic life on the road. In his early twenties, Hunter self-published his first book, Redneck Roundup, documenting the dying communities of the Old West. Other projects followed: four years spent with the Nez Perce tribe; months with a serpent-handling congregation in the Appalachian mountains; bikers, lowriders, and street gangs; inmates in California State Prison. Intense, true pockets, and subcultures of America. The process is an integral part of Hunter’s work. He shoots exclusively on film—the pace of analog in harmony with his approach. Fundamental to Hunter’s work is the journey, the people, the place. Then committing them to film before they are greatly changed or gone forever. 14 Sep 2015TCF Ep. 291 - Jaime Ibarra00:47:29
Once you’ve made the decision to practice photography and after you’ve made the investment in a camera and software, well, that’s when the real challenge begins. The questions becomes how you get from being yet another guy or gal with a camera to one that actually produces work that is unique, beautiful and hopefully personal.   Yet, as difficult and challenging as that might be, we see examples of ordinary people make work that stuns and inspires, using the vary same tools that we readily have access to. Jaime Ibarra is one such photographer.   Jaime Ibarra is a self-taught photographer whose creative life began as a musician, then a graphic designer and eventually a photographer. But even though photography came later in his life, he used the skills he he had developed teaching himself music to teach himself how to do extraordinary things with a one camera, one lens and Photoshop.   Resources:   Jaime Ibarra http://ibarraphoto.com/     Oprisco http://www.oprisco.com/     Los Angeles Center of Photography http://juliadean.com/an-evening-with-ibarionex-perello-sept-22/     Support the work we do at The Candid Frame with your donations via PayPal.   https://www.paypal.com/us/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_flow&SESSION=_mbo5ws_YJk4b5gYgCW9F_LOL2MnFyOCvX0u0j_E2Uv3tm9Hx3HxlHOCHTe&dispatch=5885d80a13c0db1f8e263663d3faee8d0b9dcb01a9b6dc564e45f62871326a5e

His effective use of a camera originally intended to create stills for filming a full episode of a network television showcased how this technology continues to change and evolve. His years of experience behind the lens has provided him great insight into the use of light, composition, movement and time. While many focus on the technology itself, Gale Tattersal is a big proponent for using these new capabilities to improve our ability to tell stories whether they find a home on a television, computer or even a mobile phone. 11 Apr 2016TCF Ep. 318 - Sven Markus Richter00:46:48
Sven Markus Victor initial career path was that as a doctor. Though he had an interest in photography, he succumbed to familiar and cultural pressure to study medicine. But at some point, he realized it could only be a career in photography that would bring him happiness and fulfillment. So, he’s made the choice to replace the stethoscope with a camera. Part of that transition has involved a recent collaboration with US-based photographer Riley Draper. They journeyed to Greece to document the fate of tens of thousands of refugees, largely from war-torn Syria. Situated in these make-shift camps in the small town of Idomeni, these men, women and children struggle to survive as Western counties debate what’s to be done with them. All this is happening in the midst of economic crisis in Greece, growing xenophobia and fears of terrorism. Victor and Draper’s work attempt to put a face a people that are often looked upon as some amorphous mass. His work, and the work of photographer and reporters like him, hope to humanize a crisis that shows no sign of diminishing or going away.   Resources:   Sven Markus Victor   Riley Draper Mark Power Alex Soth Build your website today by taking advantage of l. Robert Fischer is a photographer and artist who once thought his life path would be that of a psychologist. Instead, he chose to lead a creative life as a painter, sculptor and a photographer.  He appreciates that the camera provides him the opportunity to closely examine his skewed perspective of life, sexuality and personality. He sees himself really a painter that takes pictures.  He is often in pursuit of getting the image rather than the perfect photograph. Robert Fischer was the subject of the 1999 documentary Original Schtick, which covered his 3-months collaborating with several Australian artists and fine-art galleries. 02 Feb 2015TCF Ep. 265 - Kale Friesen00:42:32
Kale Friesen was born into the expansive vistas of Saskatchewan in 1981. At a very young age Kale became immersed in art and knew that he was destined to work in the arts. Kale spent his entire youth painting, drawing and playing music, and it wasn’t until he discovered photography that Kale understood how best he could realize his aesthetic vision.  In 2001 Kale headed west to Vancouver BC where he continued my love of arts, music and skateboarding.  A hunger to see the world and be inspired, Kale moved to Paris, France in 2006 to focus on his artistic pursuits. After visiting the Fondation Cartier-Bresson on a summer afternoon in 2007 he knew in that instant that the only thing he wanted to do was make photographs. The people and architecture of Paris became Kale’s photography school.  While in living in Europe Kale began shooting on the streets of Paris every day and traveling to abandoned spaces in France and Belgium, experimenting with Fine Art photography and street photography.  After returning to Vancouver in 2009 Kale changed direction and photographic focus on fashion photography and portraiture. The genius and originality of photographers of Helmut Newton, Nick Knight and Solve Sundsbo opened Kale’s mind and guided his path towards becoming a fashion photographer. Kale photographs emote a somber mood with a strong sense of colour, design and movement.  Kale currently lives and works in Vancouver, BC as a fashion, beauty photographer, and still carries a camera every day.  Resources:   http://www.kalejf.com/   http://www.creativeexchangeagency.com/artists/photography/sarah-moon   http://ibarionex.net/thecandidframe/   info@thecandidframe.com
27 Aug 2017TCF Ep. 384 - Anya Anti00:41:59
An internationally published and award winning photo artist from Ukraine now based in New York, Anya Anti has been into photography since 2009. She’s always been a creative person – as a child she was good at painting and crafts. As her passion for art grew she fell in love with photography and started shooting the world around her. As a self-taught photographer, she gained all her knowledge and inspiration through social media and online photography communities. A year-and-a-half later, she started creating fine art surrealistic female portraits, which became her preferred genre and a hallmark of her work. Installations, costumes and Photoshop manipulation help her to embody her fantasies into a finished piece of art. She shoots mostly with old vintage manual lenses like Helios and Petzval. 21 Apr 2025TCF Ep. 639 - Daniel Power01:06:14
Founder and Publisher Daniel Power started powerHouse Books in 1995, and was joined by Craig Cohen in 1996. The early years had Power and Cohen tag-teaming on a few books at a time, raising the bar each season when, in 1998, PowerHouse Books had its first best-seller, Women Before 10 A.M. by Véronique Vial. Power and Cohen followed up on that success in 1999 with the critically acclaimed cult monographs X-Ray by François Nars and Life is Paradise by Francesco Clemente and Vincent Katz. In 2000, Cohen became a partner in the company, assuming the title of Vice President and Associate Publisher, serving as Executive Publisher between 2008 and 2019. He quickly signed up for the next company bestseller, Back in the Days by Jamel Shabazz, and in the same year, he developed a packaging deal with Capitol Records to produce the Beastie Boys Anthology: The Sounds of Science. With the publishing program growing rapidly, Power and Cohen hired Sara Rosen, who served as Publicity Director from 2000 to 2009. Since then, the company has redefined the cultural landscape of the illustrated book, becoming the only U.S. independent publishing company to do so. He collaborated with photographer Larry Fink on the latter’s posthumous retrospective monograph, Larry Fink: Hands On / A Passionate Life of Looking. 27 Jul 2015TCF Ep. 284 - Matt Sweeney00:48:56
Hollywood is a town that has been defined more by its myths than its realities. It's a town built on fiction and endless aspirations.  So, photographs that are free from the influence of publicists and marketing teams can seem jarring and surprising. But that can be a good thing. That's what Matt Sweeney's photographs do. They show an unexpected and beautiful side of Hollywood in the early eighties, where the 1-mile stretch between Hollywood and Vine and Hollywood and Highland was a setting of public theater with every kind of character, both big and small.  Taken during his early twenties using a Nikon SLR with Kodachrome film, his images of Los Angeles capture a unique time in a way that's rare and wonderful.    Resources:   http://www.mudstonephoto.com   http://mudstonephoto.tumblr.com   http://levrukhin.tumblr.com   http://www.shootingfilm.net/2013/12/wonderful-color-photos-of-los-angeles.html   http://ibarionex.net/thecandidframe/   info@thecandidframe.com
27 Nov 2018TCF Ep. 445 - Gary Nicholls00:57:44
Gary Nicholls was born in Essex, England. He studied Design Technology and Technical drawing to B.ed level, and during that time he also took art classes where he learned that he had a natural eye, and could “see” something finished. Two turning points, since buying his first DSLR  led him to the Imaginarium concept. The first was when he subscribed to Adobe Photoshop, realizing that his drawing skills would be of huge benefit. The second turning point came in September 2012 when he bought tickets for the Lincoln Steampunk Festival at the Asylum. It was the moment when he knew he had found his niche. The idea of “The Imaginarium” was born from that meeting. Not since Hogarth with Rakes Progress has a story been told in fine art images. What started as a 20-image short story has grown into a 450 image trilogy with 150 genuine Steampunks involved, taking storytelling to a whole new level.
