14 Feb 2022How To Give Away Your Best Content For Free (without undermining your paid stuff)00:50:17

Have you ever asked yourself “If I give away all this free content, why would anyone pay me?” or perhaps you’ve pondered, “What type of content should be free, and what types of content should be paid?”

If so, you’re not alone. Those questions are some of the most common ones I get from my business coaching clients and LTL students. And I get it. Creating content takes a lot of time, effort and energy - all of which as a small business owner, we need to be smart about allocating.

In this episodeI share:

  • The 4 types of content you should give away for free
  • The 5 things you should probably be charging for and
  • The reason you should create free content in the first place

03 Oct 2022Ritual As Remedy with Mara Branscombe01:11:36

👉 Kajabi For Yoga Teachers

Episode Description:

I’m always doing rituals. Before my morning practice. Before I see clients, teach a class or record an interview. Bigger events get bigger rituals. And to be honest, I’ve never given it much thought, except for the fact that it’s something I like to do, and so I do it. However, when today's guest, Mara Branscombe, reached out to me to talk about her new book, Ritual As Remedy, I was intrigued.

ABOUT MARA

Mara Branscombe is a mother, writer, yogi, artist, teacher, mindfulness leader, ceremonialist and spiritual coach. She is the author of “Ritual As Remedy: Embodied Practices For Soul Care.”  Mara is passionate about weaving the art of mindfulness, self-care, creativity, mind–body practices, and earth-based rituals into her life and work, and she has been leading community ceremony since 2000. An adventurous spirit, Mara has sailed across the Atlantic Ocean, trekked across the Himalayas, studied yoga in India, planted trees in Canada’s north, lived off the grid in a remote cabin in the woods, worked as a Waldorf (Steiner School) teacher, and then found her passion for dance and choreography. All the while yoga, meditation, mysticism and ritual have been at the heart of Mara’s journey. Her trainings in the Incan Shaman lineage and the Pagan tradition have greatly inspired her life’s work of earth-based, ceremonial, intentional, and heart-centered living and loving. Mara currently lives in Vancouver, Canada with her husband and two daughters.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mara’s morning ritual & what a typical work day looks like
  • What makes something a ritual

17 Oct 2022The Magic Of Teaching A Series (vs. drop in classes) with Lauren Enright01:19:30

Teaching drop in classes can be fun. You never know who you’re going to see in class, you start fresh every time & students can come and go as they please. However, teaching drop in classes also has it’s limitations; it’s hard to progress or build from week to week, or build a strong container as the students change from week to week.

One alternative to teaching drop in classes is THE SERIES. A predetermined number of classes, held together by a strong theme in which students register in advance to attend the whole shebang. In today’s episode I speak with Lauren Enright - yoga teacher, doula, and coach who has successfully mastered the series model of teaching classes, and agreed to come on the show today to share how she did it.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • How Lauren went from studying neuroscience to teaching highschool students to running a business as a doula & yoga teacher.
  • How Lauren built her confidence to promote herself and her work
  • The magic of teaching a 6 week class series (vs. drop in classes)
  • Why 6-8 weeks is the sweet spot for setting up your class series
  • How working backwards, repetition & focusing on community can make your series a massive success
  • Lauren’s daily routine + how she stays balanced as a mom, wife, teacher, doula, coach & business owner

On today’s show I talk with Richard Miller.

Richard is a world-renowned spiritual teacher, author, yogic scholar, researcher and clinical psychologist. 19 Dec 2019The New Hands On Adjustments In Yoga with Ashley Brodeur of Feelosophy Ep.0801:21:48

Yoga and touch are heavily associated with each other - as yoga teachers, we are often given some training in how to use our hands, feet, and bodies to align, adjust and even comfort our students. As a student, chances are you’ve been touched by a yoga teacher in class. Many students have told me that the main reason they go to yoga is to be touched, and still countless others have told me they’ve been injured, or even abused by their yoga teachers using touch.

As awareness finally grows in the yoga community about consent to touch being a non-negotiable necessity ( hello & thank you #metoo + the netflix Bikram doco + writings about somatic dominance + Karen Rain going public to name just a few! ) some teachers have become ( understandably ) hesitant and confused about touching their students. I get it. And I think we should be concerned, I think we should educate ourselves around consent, I think we should reevaluate the need to adjust anyone with the intention of taking him / her / them deeper into a pose.

Touch can heal. And touch can harm. Can we as a yoga community relearn how we use touch to make it helpful rather than harmful?

Ashley Brodeur thinks so. Ashley offers us a way to touch that is informed & supportive. It’s not designed to fix, or correct anything. Instead of taking a student deeper into his / her / their pose, Feelosophy uses informed touch to take the student deeper into their connection with themselves.

07 Jan 2020LGBTQ Inclusivity For Yoga Teachers with Tristan Katz Ep. 1001:21:47

I found Tristan through her instagram page, Tristan Katz Creative, when she started putting out LGBTQ Inclusivity content for yoga teachers. Over the last several months Tristan has put out a series of posts that help educate yoga teachers around language, pronouns, what to do when you fuck up, and finding ongoing support. Alongside this work, Tristan is also a business consultant for yoga teachers and healing arts professionals, and a graphic + web designer. You’ll hear a little about Tristan’s story in the episode, but I highly recommend that you check out Tristans website and instagram. She’s on instagram at t m katz creative and her website is tristankatz.com

13 Jan 2020Making Bold Ass Moves with Dana Falsetti Ep. 1101:07:50

Today on the show I speak with Dana Falsetti.

Dana is a yoga teacher, fat liberation activist & serial entrepreneur. Dana’s newest yoga related venture, “practice with dana” is an online, pay what you can, accessible yoga platform. In 2013 Dana started an instagram account under the username @noaltrees and brought the conversation of yoga and body image to over 300K followers.

Throughout Dana’s career, they have made many bold ass moves to put their values before profit and fame. When it no longer felt healthy, or in alignment, Dana closed that instagram account with all those followers. When a company they were involved in wasn’t in alignment with their message, they spoke out. Dana has been faced with loss and lawsuits, and yet, has remained resilient, and true to what they believe in.

As you hear me say in the interview, Dana has been someone who has been a constant source of inspiration for me. From day one, I have watched them show up with a level of honesty, vulnerability and integrity that is surprisingly rare, even in the yoga world.

When I reached out to Dana, I honestly didn’t think I would ever hear back from them ( they’re kind of a big deal ) and I was super nervous to interview Dana - you can totally hear it in my voice in the first few questions.

Although I’m almost a decade older than Dana, I look up to Dana - as a shining example of how I want to show up in the world.

27 Jan 2020So You Want To Start A Yoga Union with Markella Los Ep.1301:25:36

In November 2019, Yoga Teachers at YogaWorks in New York city came together to create the world’s first ( that we know of ) Union For Yoga Teachers.

From The Yoga Works Union:

“We are Yoga and Mindful Fitness Educators. We’ve come together to have a voice in our industry, raise industry standards, and create a more equitable and sustainable profession for all. Our goal is for employees, students and businesses to thrive”

I was lucky enough to interview Markella Los, one of the union organizers for today’s podcast.

Markella is a yoga teacher, movement educator and one of the organisers of the worlds first union for yoga teachers teachers. I’ve been following Markella on instagram for a few years, because we share a similar philosophy about movement. We’ve had similar experiences with a long period of “yoga only” movement, and suffered pain and injuries as a result. After which learning from humans outside the yoga system, and upgrading our knowledge of how to keep the body healthy and resilient through movement.

But then… last year, I noticed that Markella was part of a group of teachers at YogaWorks studios in new york who were organising a union. Markella was one of the first people I reached out to, to be on the new show - and due to the fact that the union was literally forming when I asked her to come on - we had to postpone recording until a few weeks ago.

We talk about:

  • Why Markella & the Yoga Works teachers began to pursue creating a union
  • Pay barriers to becoming a yoga teacher
  • Pay transparency
  • Why the burden of getting a pay rise shouldn’t fall on the individual
  • An update on where the YogaWorks union is now (after the YES vote in November)
  • How a union works - collective bargaining, creating a contract
  • What types of things the union is able to ask for
  • How much time takes to organise a union
  • Thinking globally and acting locally
  • Bottom up organising in your community
  • Criticism & union busting tactics
  • Organizing for independent contractors ( vs. employees )
  • Misclassification of yoga teachers as independent contractors
  • The personal investment and growth of organising
  • The first thing to do if you’re thinking about starting a union
  • The main criticisms / challenges of yoga union organising
  • Union busting tactics
  • How the financial backing of a union works
  • How a yoga union can help foster diversity and access in yoga

03 Feb 2020A Month In Review: Yoga News January 2020 Ep. 1400:14:34

This week the podcast takes on a different form - solo episode of a monthly round up of what happened in Yoga during January. Aside from locking myself out of “my” ( I use quotes because I house sit full time ) apartment and missing an interview, a yoga news show has been bubbling around in my mind for a while. Members of The Teachers Club will receive a Yoga Weekly newsletter detailing the news of the week, so I thought I would venture out and try this new format on the podcast.

Of course, this report is biased. I’ve selected yoga news stories I felt were relevant, important or interesting. Other things happened in yoga during January 2020 - this is the highlight reel I’ve curated.

Let me know what you think…

NOTE: I have no formal education in journalism, writing or media law. My education is in yoga and psychology. If anything I have mentioned on the podcast is incorrect, or causes harm please email me at cora@corageroux.com and I will make every effort to correct my mistakes. I am open, and willing to learn.

This months stories include:

  • More #metoo + yoga reports
  • A diversity in wellness photography campaign
  • A partnership between Lululemon & a super futuristic tech company

And heaps more

09 Feb 2020Reclaiming Ayurveda with Navi Gill Ep. 1501:18:49

Much like yoga, I have a deeply personal relationship to Ayurveda, however I’m very aware that like yoga, Ayurveda comes from a culture that is not my own.  As I continue to explore my own lineage, and the healing practices that come from within it, I am also committed to sharing my gratitude for a system that has bestowed so much benefit upon my own life by bringing you interviews like this weeks show with Navdeep Gill.

17 Feb 2020Closing The Wellness Gap with Nicole Cardoza Ep.1601:05:11

Nicole is one of those people that I definitely felt was way too cool to talk to me, especially since we scheduled the interview, Nicole is now the face of Nike's Spring 2020 Yoga campaign. Not to mention her plentiful accolades, multiple not-for-profit businesses and the fact that she is an all around changemaker in wellness - I felt truly lucky to have the opportunity to speak with her. I first learned of Nicoles work, sadly, due to the mess that Yoga Journal made after her cover shoot last June.

Since that time, I’ve been watching Nicole spread her message of reclaiming wellness, closing the wellness gap and making wellness accessible to all.  She’s taken what could have been a career defining controversy, and parleid it into a launch pad for equity and justice. #impressed

ABOUT NICOLE

Nicole is a serial entrepreneur passionate about the reclamation of wellness. As the founder and Executive Director of Yoga Foster, a national nonprofit that empowers educators with yoga and mindfulness resources for the classroom, she’s re-invested over $2.5M in resources from the wellness community to increase the health equity of schools across the country.

After controversy with Yoga Journal over her cover feature for their August / September 2019 issue, Nicole’s work and mission went viral. From that experience, she launched Reclamation Ventures, a fund that invests in high-potential, underestimated entrepreneurs making wellness more accessible in their communities.

In today's show, Nicole and I discuss:

  • What the Wellness Gap is
  • Why inclusivity is deeper than who you put on your marketing materials
  • How to make your business truly inclusive, and bring wellness to all
  • Why true inclusivity starts with the people behind the business
  • A concrete way to start unpacking our own blind spots, and do the work to create inclusivity from the inside
  • Intention vs. Impact
  • A definition of Intention
  • A definition of Impact
  • The best analogy of intention vs. impact I’ve ever heard
  • Spiritual bypassing in the yoga community to avoid accountability
  • Community Care & Healing Justice
  • Building community into every part of your practice
  • How the wellness industry operates within capitalism
  • Unpacking what community really means
  • Starting a social impact organization
  • Deciding on a not-for-profit or for profit business structure

18 Mar 2020Ageing Well with Myra Lewin Ep. 1701:04:40

Myra and I spoke before the COVID-19 Pandemic became a serious social and public health emergency. However, it’s been several weeks since I last put out the podcast, and I know I’ve found respite in the podcasts I love in the last few days. Taking dog walking breaks and listening to shows that have nothing to do with the pandemic have been healing for me - so in case The Teaching Yoga Podcast can be that for you right now - here is an episode with an incredible woman and teacher, Myra Lewin.

Myra is the founder and director of Hale Pule - a Yoga & Ayurveda training centre and space for healing. I’ve been following Myra’s work for quite some time through her podcast Everyday Ayurveda and Yoga.

As I think you can tell in the interview Myra is someone that I really admire, because as far as I can tell, she runs an incredibly successful business, yet truly LIVES the principles of Ayurveda and yoga.

Myra has been practicing and teaching Yoga and Ayurveda for over 30 years, is the author of two books - Freedom In Your Relationship To Food and Simple Ayurvedic Recipes. Hale Pule is also a teaching space, and each year Myra and her team lead numerous professional training in Yoga & Ayurvedic studies.

I was most excited to speak with Myra about how yoga & ayurveda can help us age with grace.

*Please note - in the actual audio podcast I mention that Hale Pule also has an organic farm. While that was true when their center was located in Hawaii, their new home in New Zealand will have an abundant garden instead.

04 May 2020Running A Social Conscious Yoga Studio with Robin Lacambra of Good Body Feel Ep. 2301:09:23

Last week my guest Eliana Chinea spoke about some of the issues that arise in the typical yoga studio model - and inside of The Teachers Club we questioned weather the studio model, as we know it, will go extinct.

It's true that studio after studio are closing their doors. Many of them were in real financial trouble before the pandemic, and the closures were the last straw. However, I believe that there will always be a demand for a place where people can gather in person, in community.  And as past podcast guest Nicole Cardoza says, the studios that survive will have to shift their value proposition.

So this week I'm pumped to bring you a conversation I had with Robin Lacambra before covid closed the world. Robin runs Good Body Feel, what I'm calling a socially conscious yoga studio. Robin runs GBF on a dramatically different business model than 99% of the other yoga studios out there. Right now, getting creative, and thinking outside the box are what will help us adapt and reinvent what the yoga industry can become.

Robin and I discuss:

  • Why the body is political - and what that means
  • Why diversity in leadership is so important
  • Running a socially conscious yoga studio
  • The 4 pillars Robin uses to measure success in her business
  • Running a ‘pay what you can’ sliding scale movement studio

Ely currently lives in Shanghai - and we recorded this interview in February before COVID-19 intensified in the rest of the world - however, during this interview Ely was in lockdown - something many of us are experiencing now - she’s written a great piece about self compassion and survigin covid-19 - I’ll link to that in the show notes.

27 Apr 2020Teaching Yoga Outside Of The Studio Model with Constanza Eliana Chinea Ep.2201:16:48

In today’s show I speak with Constanza Eliana Chinea - a Latinx Yoga teacher living in LA. Eliana began teaching and consulting after noticing a need for diversity and representation in the industry. She now teaches Yogis and entrepreneurs how to decolonize their practice, create equity for teachers of color, and build inclusive spaces in the community.

The conversation that Eliana and I have centers on a topic that I think is super important right now - how yoga teachers can teach, outside of the typical studio model. As I mention in the interview, even before I was a yoga teacher, I was volunteering and working at studios. I’ve done everything from clean mats, mop floors, to managing a studio inside of a large chain, to teaching at a million different studios, and eventually to owning one. However, the majority of the time I was hovering right around the poverty line, getting burnt out, and feeling pressure to make my classes conform to the studio standards.

Eliana left the traditional studio model several years ago, and in this episode, she shares how she shifted her mindset, and began teaching in a more fulfilling and sustainable way.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • 6 issues with the current studio model
  • Finding freedom outside of the studio
  • How to manage the transition from teaching inside of the system, to teaching outside of it

I had the pleasure of meeting Manoj in person late last year when he came to Sydney to teach about anxiety and burn out, two things I’m incredibly familiar with.

I was really excited to speak with Manoj about his experience as a meditation teacher because he is so open about the balancing act between being a normal human being, and also someone that people look to for guidance, especially during challenging times.

Manoj drops some great wisdom about not throwing the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to navigating the difficult terrain of tradition, abuse and lineage.

I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Jivana Heyman, author of Accessible Yoga; Poses & Practices For Every Body, Founder and Director of  The Accessible Yoga Organization - an international not-for-profit dedicated to bringing the teachings of yoga to communities that are under-represented in traditional yoga spaces.

Jivana also runs the Accessible Yoga Conference, and holds multiple accessible yoga teacher trainings around the world each year. A lot of Jivana’s work has focused around making asana accessible, but as he’s mentioned before, one of his deepest passions is actually making the essence of yoga, or yoga philosophy accessible. I was so excited to speak with Jivana about this.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

25 May 2020What is Yoga Alliance Doing To Support Its International Members? with Dr. Christa Kuberry and Catherine Marquette Ep.2601:16:15

Today on the show, I speak with Dr. Krista Kuberry and Catherine Marquette of Yoga Alliance.

My intention with this interview is to ask the questions that you, Yoga Alliance’s international members, especially here in Australia, wanted me to ask. I reached out to my own community in the teachers club, and created polls and posts on my Instagram and social media. The responses that I got back reflected a feeling of frustration and confusion with Yoga Alliance in general, and specifically with their international support. However, in preparing for this interview, I became aware that YA is aware of their “reputation concerns” and desire for more support from the community - and are taking multiple steps to address both. In this interview, we get into questions, within the scope of international support, that hopefully help you make a more informed decision about your membership with YA (if you have one) - and how to reach out for more support if you need it.

We didn’t have time to cover some other really important, and relevant topics like how Yoga Alliance is / will handle accounts of sexual assault with the community (hopefully that conversation can happen soon too) - or questions around larger problems within the yoga industry like exploitation of teachers.

However, in this interview we do cover:

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • The original purpose of Yoga Alliance
  • The development of the YA RYS standards, and their new updated RYS standards
  • How the new, more rigorous application process may serve as one tool for ensuring that the standards are upheld
  • The role of social accountability - that companies like AirBnB or Uber use as one possible, yet currently problematic part of the solution to the questions of enforcing the new RYS standards
  • The role that online learning may take in YTT’s in the future
  • The Yoga Alliance Foundation International Emergency Relief fund - which at the time of this release will be live and accepting applications
  • Yoga Alliance’s position and current plans for partnering with international professional insurance companies as a member benefit
  • New provisions for international continuing education with multiple time zones & non-live CE credits

08 Jun 2020Understanding Vedic Astrology + 2020 Predictions with Mark Ashmore Ep. 2701:33:29

On today’s show, I speak with my good friend, yoga teacher and astrologer - Mark Ashmore. Some of you might remember Mark from episode 0, where he interviewed me, and helped to introduce the show way back in November of last year. Mark and I have known each other for years, and have even led yoga & astrology workshops together. I was really excited to speak with Mark today about one of his passions - vedic astrology.

Jyotish, or vedic astrology traces its origins back to the rig veda and therefore, as Mark points out, speaks the same language as yoga and ayurveda. And while I know a lot of yoga teachers, myself included, are interested in Astrology, we are probably more familiar with western astrology. So, I’m pumped to have Mark on the show to speak about a system that aligns so closely with what we already practice and teach.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Why mark decided to make the switch from studying western astrology to vedic astrology
  • The main differences between western and vedic astrology
  • The astrology of 2020 from a vedic perspective
  • How to use knowledge of astrology wisely in teaching yoga
  • The meaning behind retrogrades

22 Jun 2020Do You Need A Lawyer? Leaning Into The Legal Side Of Running A Wellness Business with Nid Ra Ep. 2901:11:26

I’m going to go out on a limb here and assume that as a yoga teacher you probably started teaching because practicing yoga changed your life in some way. Maybe it helped you heal chronic pain or illness, or showed you a more skillful way of working with your mind. And because of those benefits, perhaps you felt compelled to learn more about yoga, or wanted to share it with others. At some point, you enrolled in a teacher training, and then began to teach. For most of us, we don’t start teaching as a means to start a business - however, as soon as you begin accepting money for teaching yoga - that’s exactly what you’ve got. In rare instances, you might be classified as an employee as a yoga teacher, but the vast majority of us (at least right now) are sole traders and independent contractors.

And as a business owner, there are certain legal considerations that you need to have in place to make sure you are clear and in integrity with your students, collaborators and fellow teachers.

Like, did you know that the simple act of having a website means that you should have privacy policies, disclaimers, a cookies policy and a terms of use section???

If that’s old news to you  - don’t judge.

And if you’re like me, and are just learning this now - this episode is for you.

In today's show, I speak with Nid Ra. Nid began her working life as a dance teacher, then later became a barrister, and solicitor. She worked in house for leading media and music companies as a technology music licensing specialist. In 2012, Nid suffered a head injury and as part of her recovery, she established her first wellness business. After migrating to Australia in 2016, Nid created Spirit Law, which supports more yoga teachers, healers, mindfulness companies to grow their online business and protect their rights.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Why yoga teachers need to protect themselves legally
  • How the law helps to reflect our values and uphold integrity in our working relationships
  • Why we need to be especially mindful with legal matters when teaching online
  • Negotiating contacts between yoga studios & yoga teachers
  • Why the inner work of our practice needs to be reflected in how we run our businesses
  • How to find a good lawyer & strategies for saving money while hiring a lawyer
  • When legal templates might be enough, and when you need to hire a professional
  • And the legal considerations every website must have

On today’s show, I speak with my guest Arundhati Baitmangalkar about the business of yoga. And while I’m sure, you (like me), didn’t start out to become a business owner when you did your fist ytt, you’ve now realised that a business is exactly what you have.

20 Jul 2020Post Lineage Yoga Part 1 with Theo Wildcroft Ep. 3301:25:11

When I first came across the term post lineage yoga it immediately struck a chord with me. As I began to read more of Theo Wildcroft's blogs on the topic, for the first time, I started to have language around some of the things I had been pondering for the last several years in my yoga journey.

Theo Wildcroft, PhD is a yoga teacher, writer and scholar working for a more sustainable relationship between our many selves, the communities that hold us, and the world that nourishes us. Her research considers the democratization of yoga post-lineage, and the many different ways yoga communities are responding to concerns about safety in practice. She’s a lover of vulnerable people, of wild things and wild places, and of the simple miracle of life itself. Countless people have downloaded her yoga nidras, which are profound but gentle, take you on unexpected journeys, and are always spontaneously created.

I learned so much from my conversation with Theo, we’re definitely going to do another episode as there is so much more we could discuss.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Theo’s background in yoga & research
  • How Theo earns a living
  • A definition of post lineage yoga
  • How post-lineage yoga works

26 Oct 2020Working Rights For Yoga Teachers with Kallie Schut01:13:14

For many years, it’s clear that something has been off with how we work as yoga teachers. In the 10 years that I was a full time yoga teacher, I had countless conversations with fellow teachers who were being bullied by their employer, had their classes cut unfairly, or have simply not been paid for the classes they taught. However, late last year, the world's first union for yoga teachers was created in New York for the teachers who were employees of the YogaWorks studios there. Many yoga teachers, though, are not employees.

Then, last week (early October 2020) something groundbreaking happened. A small group of committed yoga teachers in the UK (Normal Blair, Laura Hancock, Julie Pons and today’s guest, Kallie Schut) created the world’s second union for yoga teachers, and the first for those of us who are independent contractors!

Kallie Schut shares a great deal about the formation of the union (which you can read more about below) However, Kallie also does a great deal of work around decolonising yoga & antiracism training that we didn’t get into in this episode. We’ll be sure to have Kallie back to discuss those topics in the future.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • How the Yoga Teachers Union in the UK began
  • Organising as independent contractors / gig workers
  • The benefits of joining a union for yoga teachers
  • How unions rebalance power in working relationships for yoga teachers
  • How unions can help create more opportunity for folks who have been traditionally marginalised in the yoga community
  • Tips for how you can organise in your yoga community

02 Nov 2020Putting Your Practice To Work with Anusha Wijeyakumar00:56:12

Over the last few months of recording this podcast, I have received so many questions from you (my incredible listeners) about teaching yoga in a workplace setting, or bringing wellness into your corporate community. And since this is something that I know almost nothing about, I wanted to bring you an interview with someone who had found success in this arena.

And when a friend shared the work of Anusha Wijeyakumar with me, I knew I had found the perfect person to do just that. In this interview Anusha and I speak largely about applying the principles of yoga philosophy to running your own business, self confidence and “putting your practice to work” in your career life. However, Anusha filled me in that if you’re looking for a more step-by-step, “how did you do it” guide, she shares that information in her upcoming book, Meditation With Intention.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Understanding Dharma
  • How to know if you’re in alignment with your Dharma
  • How Anusha transitioned from a corporate career to starting her own wellness business
  • Brining trust, faith and divine connection into business
  • Managing self doubt

09 Nov 2020Trauma, Boundaries & The Fawn Response with Jane Clapp01:13:13

Wow. Ok. This episode was BIG for me personally. And from what I know of working with yoga teachers for many years, I have a feeling that there will be a lot of you out there who resonate with the topics I discuss with Jane Clapp.

Jane started her working life in the wellness industry as a personal trainer, but her career has spanned several decades & multiple modalities, including yoga. Today, Janes work centers around soma and the psyche, and the intersections between psychology, trauma, the nervous system and the body.

In this episode, Jane and I go deep into the fawn response, sometimes called the tend-and-befriend response, and how that pattern can play out in our relationships and life. I share my struggles with setting boundaries, cultivating a healthy fight response, and overall being a people-pleaser in recovery.

I have a feeling this episode might be a game changer for some of you - just like it was for me. I hope you enjoy the show!

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Is trauma trending in the wellness community?
  • And what the implications of that are

16 Nov 2020Understanding Sanskrit with Sunita Baste/Patil01:10:35

If you’re anything like me, and trained in yoga with western teachers (mine were incredible btw) you might not have learned much about Sanskrit in your yoga teacher training. And while I feel moderately confident in my knowledge of Sanskrit asana names, I lacked a deeper understanding of the genuine power of the “mother language of Sanskrit”, at least, that is until my friend Tara D’Cruz Noble introduced me to the work on Sunita Patil.

Sunita has over 30 years of experience in the personal practice of yoga, and recorded 15000 hours of teaching experience. She has taught thousands of students worldwide (Australia, USA and India) She is renowned for her depth of understanding in the ancient language of yoga, Sanskrit, and has taught Sanskrit to yoga teachers and teachers in trainings all over the Sydney.

After chatting with Sunita I feel inspired to expand my knowledge (& pronunciation) of Sanskrit, and can’t wait to start incorporating the so-hum mantra Sunita shared in this episode into my meditation practice.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sunita’s early introduction to yoga
  • History of Sanskrit
  • How Sanskrit was created vs. evolved
  • Why Sanskrit is being considered for a language to teach to A.I.
  • The mathematical precision of Sanskrit
  • The vibrational power of Sanskrit
  • How Sanskrit is at the very heart of yoga
  • A simple so-hum mantra meditation practice

When I launched my first website and online course in 2013, I spent over $6000 AUD and made $400 in sales (ouch). 3 businesses (& MANY learnings) later, one of the most important things I've implemented is a fundamental mindset shift that has set me up for a successful AND sustainable business.

27 Jan 2021BONUS: Cora On All Things Instagram on the Let’s Talk Yoga Podcast with Arundhati Baitmangalkar01:00:42

In today’s episode, I speak with Cora Geroux of The Teaching Yoga Podcast. Cora has been a yoga teacher since 2009. We became instant friends when we were introduced by Jesal from the Yoga is Dead Podcast. We share many interests and she has been supporting me for months now since I told her about my podcast. She is amazing with social media and the business side of teaching yoga.

In this episode, Cora talks about how yoga teachers can use social media, specifically Instagram as leverage. It is a powerful tool when used well. If you’re a yoga teacher struggling with the use of social media for your business, I invite you to listen to this episode. Let’s make your investment in social media worth it!

Cora tells the tale of her journey from being a Psychology student from the university to teaching yoga. How she managed a yoga studio for a large yoga-chain company, & transitioned to becoming a full-time yoga teacher for the same company. After a couple of years, she moved to Sydney to teach in smaller independent studios. Teaching in small studios led her to learning about the business side of yoga.

It was around 2014 or 2015 when she started running yoga teacher training. She started handling social media, website development, marketing, and graphic design. This was when she found out that she loved doing all this stuff. She left the studios by the end of 2019 to focus more on the digital and online aspects. She launched her online business and started a mentoring membership for yoga teachers called The Teachers Club in March 2020 a few months after launching her podcast. Talk about perfect timing during the pandemic!

Episode highlights:

  • Reasons why yoga teachers don’t use social media
  • How to find the right social media platform for yoga teachers
  • Outsource or not to outsource social media management? When?
  • How to start your first post and how to stay consistent and organized
  • What creates a “good” post?
  • Hashtags in Instagram
  • What will Cora suggest a yoga teacher to post on Instagram?

22 Feb 2021Critical Thinking In Yoga with Bernie Clark01:20:06

I had the good fortune to start my yoga journey in earnest, only a few kilometers from the home studio of yin yoga pioneer, Bernie Clark. This meant that very early on, only a year or so after I started teaching, I completed a 50 HR Yin Yoga training with Bernie. Alongside the depth of wisdom Bernie brings to his teaching of yin yoga & human variation, I learned the value of applying critical thinking & the scientific method to my endeavors in yoga.

In today’s episode, Bernie helps me explore these concepts more deeply. At a time when we’re digesting more information than ever, critical thinking becomes even more important. It’s my hope that in this conversation, you feel inspired to question everything and keep an open mind, while not being afraid to change your opinions when presented with new evidence.

05 Apr 2021Grassroots Business Building with Kelly Sunrose01:17:13

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to run an online business without a large following on social media? Today I speak with yoga teacher, content creator & fellow podcast host Kelly Sunrose about how she runs her business in a way that aligns with her values. While I strongly believe that quality is much more important than quantity the world of social media has desensitized us to think that for someone to be successful they need 10, 50, or even 100K followers to make a real impact.

Kelly turns that idea on its head and shares how her work has prospered without relying solely on social media to help her find new students.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kelly’s first experiences with yoga
  • How Kelly transitioned from a career as an attorney to teaching yoga
  • Kelly’s current business structure
  • How Kelly was an early adopter to podcasting & blogging and the role that has played in her business
  • Grassroots marketing (i.e. how folks built businesses before social media)
  • How most of Kelly’s new students find her
  • Is it possible to run an online business without relying on social media?
  • Non-attachment in business

19 Apr 2021Why Yoga Injuries Happen with Alexandria Crow01:25:46

Wowee, this was a fun episode. I had a whole host of questions compiled, but today’s guest, Alexandria Crow, was just bringing so much gold, I had to follow it. If you don’t know, early on in her yoga career, Alex appeared in several famous yoga journal ads, performing incredibly complex asana. As a new teacher, I was heavily influenced by those ads, and they played a part in forming my ideal of what a yogi, or at least, yoga teacher should be able to do with their body.

After several debilitating injuries, Alex has done a complete 180, and now teaches teachers how to make their classes functional & accessible. If you want to know more about Alex, and read her official bio, head over to the show notes via the link below.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alex’s journey from advanced poses on the cover of yoga journal to teaching ethical & accessible yoga
  • The details of Alex’s yoga related injuries & how she’s practices now
  • Alex then unpacks the issues with how we teach pose centric yoga classes, which include:
    • Ignoring skeletal variation / proportion
    • The requirements of many yoga poses that take us beyond functional range of movement
    • The fact that most teachers currently have a misunderstanding of biomechanics
    • Coming to yoga with a seeker mentality
    • Group dynamics / giving over ones power
    • The lack of scaffolding, which leads to leading over teaching
  • Hypermobility & the rates of hypermobility among the general population vs. in yoga teachers

03 May 2021Biomechanics & Yoga with Jules Mitchell01:19:20

If you’ve been kicking around the yoga world for a number of years, I feel like my guest, Jules Mitchell will already be on your radar. Jules is a Las vegas based yoga teacher and massage therapist who also holds a masters of science in biomechanics.

She blends the tradition of yoga with her extensive study in biomechanics to help teachers develop their craft and empower them with education. She regularly contributes to yoga teacher training programs and leads workshops worldwide, balancing the somatic aspects of yoga with the most current exercise science. Bringing the most useful and applicable pieces of that science into the yoga community is her passion, even when it invokes a discerning analysis of popular opinions. Her book, Yoga Biomechanics: Stretching Redefined, is now available through Handspring Publishing.

In my 200 HR teacher training programs I cited Jule’s work extensively, and really appreciate the contribution her work has made to the yoga community.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • What is biomechanics, really?
  • Anatomy vs. biomechanics
  • What is stretching?
  • Why deadlifting might make your hamstring flexibility more quickly than forward folds
  • Why progressing & regressing asana can help make physical adaptations more effective

10 May 2021How Yoga Teachers & Studios Can Work Together with Thy Monzo01:46:02

Over the last 18 months or so, I have been a loud advocate for yoga teachers not relying on studios & gyms for their sole source of income. In Australia, the median rate of pay for yoga teachers is around $50 AUD per class. At 15 classes per week, a teacher would make $750.00. The national minimum wage is $753.80.

We all know that to teach a 60 min class, at a bare minimum, a teacher needs to be at the studio/gym for 15 minutes before/after class. Let's be moderate, and add 1 hour per class for travel & prep time. This means to teach 15, 60 min classes, a teacher is required to invest at least 38 hours of their time. Teaching 15 classes is a full-time job.

However, as a previous studio owner myself, I don’t think this reality means that we need to pit yoga teachers & studio owners against each other.

My guest, Thy Monzo has owned a yoga studio in Sydney for the last 6 years, and in today’s conversation Cora and Thy get real about the reality of owning a yoga studio. We also chat about the role that a yoga studio can play in a teachers career, and why a blended business model could support both the teacher and the studios.

ABOUT THY

Thy began practicing yoga over 15 years ago as a way to find calm and peace from the stresses of University, and everyday life. After her first yoga class (ashtanga), she felt amazing. Breathing, sweating, and fully living in the moment, she had never felt more connected to life. Thy believes that the best part of teaching is learning; learning more about the postures, about people and their bodies, and more about herself. Her classes are fun and dynamic, with a sense of lightness. Her hope is that students carry their positive energy from practice, off their mats and into their daily lives.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • Thy’s vision for opening her studio in 2015 with Modo Yoga
  • Why Thy decided to not renew her franchise contact with Modo Yoga
  • The reality of running a yoga studio during the pandemic
  • Why there's no such thing as an overnight success
  • How Thy is balancing teachers pay rates with other opportunities to increase their earning potential
  • Making pay rates transparent, and creating a clear pathway to growth for teachers
  • What it means to be entrepreneurial inside of a studio community
  • Thy’s best advice for anyone wanting to start a yoga studio in 2021

This episode of the podcast is brought to you by… YOU! After several requests from you, the listeners, this week’s guest is Laurel Beversdorf. Laurel's teaching style is very near and dear to my heart, and during our conversation you’ll hear me reminisce about a time in the not-so-distant past when I used to teach group classes. But don’t worry, we go much deeper than a trip down memory lane, and Laurel shares, in very practical and actionable terms, how you can start bringing new non-yoga movements & props into your classes, how we can offer a varied movement “diet” to our students and why she no longer believes that her asana practice was responsible for her pain.

Her classes are multidisciplinary, and blend strength training, rehabilitation practices, self-massage, and yoga. Laurel has written for Yoga Journal, Shut Up & Yoga, and the Tune Up Fitness blog. 31 May 2021Prayers of Gratitude with Sally Kempton01:16:32

Sally Kempton is one of my yoga heroes. I found her work at a time in my practice life where I felt stunted, and a bit lost. I was hungry for something that wasn’t on offer to me, at least not in the yoga circles that I found myself in. I wanted to meet a teacher who had depth, experience and as my friends and I say, is the “real deal”.

Sally Kempton is that teacher. And while I have yet to study with her in person, her book Awakening Shakti, and audio program Doorways To The Infinite had a profoundly impactful presence on my personal practice & teaching life. So it is with great joy, that I bring you my conversation with Sally Kempton.

ABOUT SALLY

Sally Kempton is a powerful teacher of applied spiritual wisdom, known for her capacity to kindle meditative states in others and help students work with meditative experience as a framework for practical life-change. She teaches teleclasses, retreats, and workshops, and is on the faculty at Esalen and Kripalu. Sally is the author of the best-selling book, Awakening Shakti: The Transformative Power of the Yoga Goddesses and Meditation for the Love of It, which Spirituality and Health magazine called “The meditation book your heart wants you to read.” Her audio program, Doorways to the Infinite: The Art and Practice of Tantric Meditation, was released by Sounds True. A former swami in the Vedic tradition, Sally has been practicing and teaching for over four decades. Her teachings combine profound knowledge of the texts of yoga and tantra with practical wisdom from contemporary psychology and integral thought.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

07 Jun 2021A Model For Collaborative Business in Yoga with Avita Bansee & Markella Los of The Connective01:19:21

If you’ve worked in the yoga industry for a while, you may have had the feeling that something “wasn’t quite right”. We’ve had many conversations on this podcast about issues inside of the industry, and how yoga businesses are set up. Being a former studio owner myself, I don’t believe it’s (usually) the fault of malicious intent on the part of studio owners, but rather a reflection of the basic structure of the studio model.

That’s why I was so excited to speak with today’s guests, Avita Bansee & Markella Los about The Connective, a teacher-owner, worker-co-op, online studio. The team at The Connective are actively creating an alternative where the teachers are also owners, who have come together on the basis of shared values to build an online studio that supports the whole, just as much as it supports the individual.

PODCAST HIGHLIGHTS

  • What The Connective is and why Markella was inspired to start it
  • Avita’s early experience with yoga at home, and how she started teaching
  • The legal structure of setting up a collaborative business
  • Why shared values are the glue that holds The Connective together
  • What it’s actually like to be a teacher-owner in a studio
