31 Oct 2019#14: When You Have Had a Bad Day00:10:32

BH014 When you have had a bad day

We all have bad days. Whether it’s due to a stressful event in our personal lives or an unexpected situation occurs at work that causes us to feel upset, worried, or otherwise stressed - we all experience moments when we think we’re prepared for just about anything, but something unexpected occurs. The question is - how do you handle bad days?

In today’s episode, I share a recent bad day experience I had at work and the strategies I used to put that situation into perspective. I discuss the importance of identifying what you know to be true about a bad experience or situation and how it can differ from the story you tell yourself in the heat of the moment. I explain the process I used to help me learn from that experience, to allow me to make better decisions in the future when a similar situation arises. I also explain why it’s critical to separate your feelings and emotions from the facts of an event and how it can change your entire perspective on a situation.

“We all have bad days. We all have situations where you think you’re prepared, and something else happens.” - Tara Humphrey

Download my 7 questions to ask yourself after a bad day

This week on The Business of Healthcare:

  • The importance of separating your feelings from the facts of a situation
  • Understanding your role in a situation and the importance of identifying the areas you could have influenced
  • Identifying the best-case and worst-case scenario and what you would do if they occurred
  • Addressing whether your proposed actions are aligned with your personal and professional values
  • Determining what you could do differently in a similar situation

Ask Yourself:

  1. What do you know to be true, and what is the story you’re telling yourself?
  2. What is your role in the situation? What is in your power to influence, and what is out of your control?
  3. What is the worst-case scenario, and what would you do if that happened?
  4. What is the best-case scenario, and what would you do if that happened?
  5. What do you want to do now, and are you willing to do it?
  6. Do your proposed actions go against your values?
  7. If you could turn back the clock, what would you do differently?

05 Jul 2023#253 Lessons in leadership with Dr Ursula Montgomery00:39:52

Dr Ursula Montgomery is a GP and former NHS England Senior Clinical Advisor and latterly, Interim Director of Primary Care, having dedicated 26 years to working and transforming healthcare. She is also a successful business leader and Mum of two, and I was absolutely delighted when Ursula agreed to be interviewed for #TheBusinessofHealthcare podcast.

This week’s episode focuses on the journey to senior leadership and why it isn’t always, and doesn’t have to be, straightforward, traditional, or linear. Ursula is proof that you can balance being successful in all areas of your life and take time out when you need to, without compromising your career path.

We discuss:

  • Weighing up our own strengths (and where there is room for additional training, development, and continuous improvement)
  • Starting from the place where you draw the most energy from, when it comes to embarking on new work projects and stepping up
  • Life as an NHS England interim director and Senior Clinical Advisor
  • The mechanics of landing policy and the importance of lessons learned
  • The wider Primary Care landscape right now
  • Ursula’s advice for aspiring leaders
  • Why protection of physical and mental health is key to realising success – and the benefits of professional coaching
  • Having the courage to take time out if and when you need to – and how not to get drawn back in (!)

01 May 2024#303 Why you should NOT hire and when to let people go...00:14:45

In this thought-provoking solo episode, Tara delves into the critical considerations of hiring within healthcare networks and businesses.

Drawing from candid discussions with primary care network clients and personal insights, Tara stresses the importance of having a clear vision before recruiting for pivotal roles and explores the detrimental effects of bringing someone into a visionless environment (and the unfairness it entails).

This Business of Healthcare podcast instalment is a masterclass in leadership responsibility, strategic planning, and the delicate balance of nurturing talent within and, when needed, beyond your organisation.

19 Aug 2021#156 A Sense of Responsibility to Speak Out with Cedi Frederick00:51:56

#156 A Sense of Responsibility to Speak Out - with Cedi Frederick

Welcome back to the Business of Healthcare Podcast – this episode is extremely, extremely special to me. I had the absolute pleasure of interviewing Cedi Frederick.  Cedi is the Chair at NHS Middlesex University Hospital, he is an entrepreneur, a coach and mentor and he also sits as a Non Executive Director.

Cedi’s background is in both public and private sectors and for over 25 years held a chief executive level positions in housing associations, social care and organisations that support older people living with learning disabilities, autism and mental health problems.

We had a very open and honest conversation around out of the 233 trusts that are currently here in the NHS, only 10 Chair positions are held by people from an ethnic minority background, we discussed our thoughts and feeling around this.

It doesn’t matter what colour you are or from what background, I truly feel it is a powerful discussion which everyone will benefit from hearing.

This week on The Business of Healthcare:

  • Who is Cedi Frederick
  • I am not what I do
  • When does our own wellbeing and sense of worth override financial responsibilities
  • What needs to happen to increase the number of ethnic minorities in senior roles
  • Being as good will not be good enough

07 Jun 2023#246 Disrupting your thinking to enable change with Dawn Jarvis00:42:40

As regular listeners will know, I am always keen to promote great leaders on the Business of Healthcare podcast, and offer a platform for others, including myself, to learn from their skills, knowledge, and experiences, particularly when it comes to those leaders who are open and willing to effect disruptive change.

Leaders don’t come any more fearless, passionate, or purposeful than this week’s guest Dawn Jarvis, Managing Director of People and OD Partners, a consultancy focused who are committed to supporting the public sector to deliver better value with better leadership.

Having worked previously at senior level in many areas of the NHS and the UK public sector more broadly, Dawn is now based in Australia and spends her time coaching and mentoring c-level executives (and their teams), as well as offering services in mediation and facilitation, transformation, strategy and improving team dynamics.

Dawn and I discussed:

  • Making the leap into consultancy and growing an internationally renowned business from the grass roots up
  • Comparing notes on the Australian and UK healthcare systems
  • Bridging the gap between what organisations think they want versus what they actually need
  • Dawn’s approach to facilitation
  • How to effect, often difficult, organisational change and transformation
  • Development of The Stellar Model
  • What Dawn most enjoys about her work - and why we believe loving what you do is key to maintaining demand for your services (and realising success)
  • Dawn’s preparations for her PhD and why she thrives on consistently challenging herself

Mentions in this episode:

Dawn Jarvis and Munu Wuthuga Dardakiin: Leading Corporate Clans uses the STELLAR MODEL® and the stories of the oldest people in the world, the first people of Australia, to describe what high performance in teams feels like. This book provides an insight into how to coach leaders and their teams to deliver high performance.

04 Jun 2020#46: When YOU are the Bearer of Bad News00:10:19

In this episode, I share my perspective on what it feels like to deliver bad news. People in leadership positions go through this all the time, but their perspective is often not documented and it is just as hard to give bad news as it is to receive it.

Join me as I share my planning and thought process on how to go about it. I share the questions I ask myself as I approach it. I talk about how to do it whether it’s a formal conversation or chat over coffee, how I prepare and gather evidence and I talk about how to move on from it in a positive and constructive way.

15 Mar 2023#234 Using coaching to help you grow and enhance your career00:17:56

Hey, and welcome back to the Business of Healthcare podcast…. recording from Nashville, Tennessee!

In episode 224 I talked about travel being firmly back on the agenda (since the height of the pandemic has passed) and how 2022 was a big travel year for me both nationally and internationally.

The reason I’m in Nashville is because I’m here on a business retreat with my business coach and mastermind group, and I thought some of you might find my approach to business coaching, consulting, and mentorship helpful. This is equally applicable to you as an employee, or business owner.

In this podcast, I talk about:

  • What a business coach is and can offer, and why I would recommend hiring one

  • The difference between coaching, consulting, and mentorship

  • The difference between a group coaching programme and mastermind group

  • The benefits of attending a business retreat

  • The costs of coaching

For those of you who are keen to listen to the podcasts I’ve mentioned relating to my former and current business coaches:

08 Mar 2023#233 Aiming for Better with Dr Nikki Kanani MBE00:26:08

It’s International Women’s Day and with this in mind, today’s Business of Healthcare podcast guest really requires no introduction.

I am extremely proud to feature NHS England Director for Clinical Integration (and deputy lead responsible for the delivery of the Covid vaccination programme), GP, Mum of two and former NHSE first female Medical Director for Primary Care, Dr Nikki Kanani MBE

To say I was super excited to do this interview would be an understatement and amongst the many things we managed to cover within our relatively short chat, I was particularly focused on finding out what it’s really like being Dr Nikki Kanani;

  • How does Nikki manage her time, day to day, in her professional, and her home life?

  • When did Nikki’s career evolve from GP to GP and national leader?

  • What does being a celebrity in her field really feel like and what are the practical impacts?

  • When is being better good enough versus delivering the very best, across Nikki’s multi-hatted portfolio?

  • How does she feel about her work right now?

  • Bearing in mind that her role has often involved overseeing the release of (sometimes not well received) policy and, particularly where the vaccination programme is concerned, potentially divisive strategy, how does Nikki deal with conflict and ensure she has ample time for self-care and access to  personal sources of support?

  • And of course….I had to ask about the future for PCNs!

This is a fascinating listen from a truly inspirational female leader…. enjoy!

02 Feb 2021#105 How To Embed A New Role Working Virtually00:17:18

#105: How to embed a new role when working Virtually

In this episode I wanted to talk you through and share some advice on how to successfully embed a new role when you are working virtually, even though many of us are months and months into this pandemic and are used to working virtually it is a challenge introducing clinical roles when we don't have that face-to-face interaction with the team as we usually would, and in the field of primary care, and in my particular niche, which is working in primary care networks, I know many people have indirectly made the error of thinking once we've recruited, then we're sorted and they have underestimated how much time and attention and investment is required in making sure those new roles feel welcomed.

In order to successfully embed a new role, it starts before they join your organisation, and it starts in the design of the role. You have to think very carefully on what do you want the role to do?

Start at the very beginning

This all starts at the very, very beginning. Even before you've created the job description, what do we want this role to do? And it should be a collaborative effort. If you're in a primary care network, it is an exercise that is done with more than just the clinical director. We need all of the practices on board.

For those of you operating outside the field of primary care, you will need to work out who you need to be talking to, to make sure when you do recruit, everybody is as clear as they can be on what this person is going to be doing. And to design that role either virtually or in person, get out some post-it notes and process map what the patient journey looks like. Now, work out where the gaps are and then process map what that role would look like if you had your ideal role or that missing piece of the jigsaw in place.

Celebrate Small Wins

Another area where I feel like people overlook this, and this is celebrating small wins. So again, your new hire is working virtually. So if they have a good day, who are they going to tell? And the answer is, they're going to tell you, and then you're going to broadcast that into your organisation. If they don't feel comfortable doing it themselves.

27 Oct 2020#80: Planning and Patience00:10:56

Making goals for your work and home life can help give you direction of where you want to go. I’ve always made 12 month goals, but recently I’ve been able to plan further ahead and see the vision of my business for the next 3 years.

Today I’m sharing why it’s important to make goals, but also why it’s important to remind yourself of your goals as you go, and to go back and review what you have achieved. I talk about how sometimes when you put the hard work in, you won’t see the fruits of your labour until a few months time, but it will be worth it. I share how it’s important to find the right pace to keep momentum yet maintain it. And finally I talk about the importance of a 3 year vivid vision.

“We’ve always planned for a 12 month cycle and it has worked for us – now it’s – what do the next 3 years look like? And I’m really excited, I’m really motivated.” Tara Humphrey

This week on The Business of Healthcare:

  • Why it’s important to make goals.
  • The importance of reminding yourself of your goals.
  • Looking back and reviewing what you have achieved.
  • Put the hard work in now, but be patient.
  • How to find the right pace you are able to maintain.
  • Sharing your goals to create accountability.
  • The importance of a 3 year vivid vision.

12 Apr 2023#238 The importance of checking and challenging each other with Monique Carayol00:54:06

For regular listeners of The Business of Healthcare podcast, Monique Carayol needs no introduction. She is my friend, ally, sounding board, informal coach; my champion; my go-to person when I need support or advice and an absolute inspiration.

As well as being a key influence on me professionally (and personally), Monique is an experienced leadership coach, consultant, ex-NHS director and now MD of Your New Avenue. She’s an award-winning strategist and change agent and started her NHS career as a PA, navigating her way to a high profile board executive director of strategy and transformation role.

In 2022, Monique co-founded Bravery in the Boardroom; a movement which focuses on increasing diversity in senior leadership, to ensure that boardrooms are more representative of the communities and staff they serve.  The movement has hosted a series of roundtable discussions and Q&As to help grow and sustain diverse talent at executive level across the NHS and will be launching a podcast and platform in Spring 2023.

In this podcast, Monique and I cover the following key topics:

  • The development of our own relationship as fellow female business leaders and entrepreneurs
  • The importance of good communication and drawing on advice from those who know you best
  • Making the move to a life beyond PAYE and the traditional 9 to 5
  • Growing your network and your business - and learning when you are most effective as a leader (and when you’re not!)
  • Drawing on personal strengths to realise success; “Be Yourself, Back Yourself and Make It Happen”
  • Driving change, tackling inequality and discrimination, challenging ourselves (and others) via the Bravery in the Boardroom webinar series and development of the soon to be launched Bravery in the Boardroom podcast

15 Oct 2020#77: When Saying Nothing is Worse than Getting it Wrong with Karen Middleton00:38:53

Karen Middleton is the CEO of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. She was Chief Professions Officer at NHS England and Department of Health between 2007 and 2014. She then joined the CSP in 2014 and has been a regular commentator on health policy. I wanted to ask Karen on the podcast because of her honesty. She issued an apology to the organisation for a slow response to Black Lives Matter.

Karen joins me today to talk about the impact of saying nothing and the impact of the fear of getting it wrong. Karen has been leading at a very difficult time and she talks about how it feels to lead during two crises. She talks about what life is like as a CEO and how she balances and manages the pressure. She shares the vital lessons she has learnt about herself during Covid-19. And she tells us about the importance of integrity, values and admitting when you don’t know something.

“I realised I was frightened of saying the wrong thing. Of getting the language wrong, of not getting the right tone. It made me look internally at myself. What do I believe in? What does matter? And what do I stand for?” Karen Middleton

This week on The Business of Healthcare:

  • The impact of saying nothing.
  • The impact of the fear of getting it wrong.
  • How to lead during two crises.

He talks about the culture and ethos at Credentially, and it is clear the company has intentionally built it this way. He shares how his organisation has responded to the Covid-19 crisis by volunteering their technology. And he shares how things have changed for Credentially when it comes to attracting funds and investors.

06 Feb 2020#26: The Role of the Clinical Lead00:13:49

Are you heading up a project, service or network? Or in a management position supporting a clinical lead? Often the role lacks clarity and you’ll not be sure what you are supposed to be doing or how to utilise the support around you.

Today I’ll share some guidance and inspiration on what is expected and what you need to do. I discuss the benefits of having a project or operations manager to support you to deliver the day to day tasks. I highlight that you are the figure head of the network, but you are not THE network, you can and will gather others to support you. And I talk about the importance of knowing yourself and being brave - because you can do this!

“Give yourself time to think and reflect. Investing in an hour of reflection time now will save you hours going forward.” – Tara Humphrey

This week on The Business of Healthcare:

  • What the role of the clinical lead is.
  • How to change your mindset and get support to deliver.
  • The importance of an operations/project manager.
  • What an operations/project manager can do for you.
  • Manage the negative voices.
  • Why you don’t need to manage the day to day deliverables.
  • How to be the visionary you need to be.
  • The importance of knowing your strengths and weaknesses.
  • And why it’s ok to accept help from others.

25 Nov 2021#180 Managing the Media in General Practice with Emma Wilkinson00:35:51

Welcome back to The Business of Healthcare Podcast episode 180 where this week I am talking to Emma Wilkinson who is a Freelance Health Journalist, Editor and Teacher.

We had a great discussion regarding Emma’s journey to becoming a journalist, the impact of negative press and her journalistic values.

We originally connected through Twitter after Emma had written a post which I thought raised a really balanced argument about what is going on with reporting in General Practice so I sent her a message and now she is a guest on my podcast.

There is lots of detail to be taken from this weeks episode and it’s great to have a conversation with Emma discussing what is going on in the field of healthcare.

12 Mar 2020Bonus Episode: Burgers, Busyness and Business00:43:09

Bonus Episode: Burgers, Busyness and Business Tara Humphrey on the 'You Are Not A Frog' Podcast

Tara puts the mic in the other hand this episode when she is interviewed by Dr Rachel Morris on the 'You Are Not A Frog' Podcast.

They chat about the main mistakes GPs and other professionals make when trying to run a business, either trying to do everything themselves or not paying enough attention to the business side of things. Even if we don’t run a practice, many of us are self-employed and are running ourselves as a business!

Time is often our limiting factor and there just isn’t enough time to get everything done that we need to. This can be profoundly frustrating and lead to all kinds of stress. Tara chats about the need for strategic planning both in our own lives and for
our businesses and partnerships and how setting goals not just for the day but the next 90 days can be vital. They also discuss how getting help can be a life-saver, be it admin support or coaching to help you set priorities.

Tara’s top tips:
1) Write down your priorities for the next 90 days
2) Plan your day before you start work
3) Block off time to do things that refuel you
4) Ask for help when you can

28 Sep 2022#210 Personalised Care & Social Prescribing with Dr Mohan Sekeram00:32:01

Dr Mohan Sekeram, is GP Principal at Wide Way Medical Practice in Merton, RCGP Regional Clinical Lead London (Person Centred Care) and Clinical Lead for Social Prescribing in Wandsworth and Merton Borough. Mohan’s work has set the gold standard for Social Prescribing and introducing Link Workers to Primary Care.

Mohan joins me today to talk about Social Prescribing. He shares what the difference is between Social Prescribing and Link Workers, what Social Prescribing is and the evidence of the effectiveness of Social Prescribing. He talks about why we should ask patients ‘what matters to you?’ rather than ‘what is the matter with you?’ He also shares how important it is to make the time to implement initiatives that bring patients, communities, and the practice together.

“Why medicalise all these problems when in fact actually you need a non-medical solution and getting to the root cause of the issue by being person-centred will help us get the right outcome.” Dr Mohan Sekeram

This week on The Business of Healthcare:

  • What Social Prescribing is.
  • The difference between Social Prescribers and Link Workers.
  • The effectiveness of Social Prescribing.
  • The importance of asking ‘what matters to you?’
  • How to make time to implement initiatives for patients, communities, and staff.

15 Feb 2023#230 Diary of a Managing Director with Tara Humphrey00:39:53

For a long time, I’ve felt there’s a noticeable gap in the podcast market of business leaders who are prepared to bare their souls and offer an honest and open, warts and all insight into their daily lives. And not just their professional lives; but how we balance the common conflict of being Managing Director and Mum, and maintaining ample self-care.

So here goes……

This week I bring to you the diary of me. Access all areas to six days in a very typical week where I talk about…

  • Why putting in a few hours on a Sunday can be invaluable in setting me up practically, and psychologically, for the week ahead

  • How I engage with others; my team, my networks, my mentors and mentees, and my friends- and the inevitable cold callers, good and bad…

  • Management of meetings and meeting outcomes, and the benefits of reflecting on the latter, in particular

  • Why being active, taking time out to meditate and knowing when I’ve reached my limit are all key to maximising my own productivity

  • How I manage my time (and inbox) to ensure I get the most out of my week, when I’m in and out of the office

  • Working on the move and how to remain productive, even when you’re stuck on the M25

  • Growing THC Primary Care and what’s coming next

  • Family time. How I mix business and pleasure in an average day and why my family are instrumental in shaping my approach and my decision-making.

04 Sep 2024#322 The Business of Healthcare Consulting - Do you need to hire a healthcare (business) consultant?00:19:45
Building on from episodes 312 & 314, Tara returns to discuss the importance of considering outside help from consultants for healthcare leaders facing challenges.

Tara provides a list of important questions for leaders to reflect on and determine if they would benefit from external support..

Tara's key takeaways:
  • Consider hiring a consultant if you consistently miss targets, have the same recurring issues, lack clarity on strategy, or face staffing and morale problems.
  • Be ready and committed to investing time and resources to improve the situation before seeking outside help.
  • Think about the potential impact of resolving the issue and consider if it can be resolved internally or if outside help is needed.
  • When looking for a consultant, seek referrals from trusted sources and prioritise expertise and experience over cost.
  • Consultants should deliver on the agreed scope of work and stay focused on the brief.

The book - The Five dysfunctions of a team

Questions asked in the episode

  1. Are you collectively ready and commited to invest in the time and resources to improve the situation?
  2. What is the cost of doing nothing and everything remaining the same?
  3. What could things look like if they were different? and if the situation improved, what would be the impact if things got better?
  4. Do you truly think that the issues can be resolved internally?
  5. If not, who might this person/team be?

28 Oct 2021#176 Working Towards A Common Agenda with Alison Reid00:35:54

Welcome back to The Business of Healthcare Podcast where this week I am talking to Alison Reid who is the CEO at Community Dental Services.

What I really liked about this interview is that I don't share the interview questions with the guest in advance and Alison was just in my opinion, so clear in articulating the values, her culture compass, the focus for the next 18 months, her leadership style and I just thought I aspire to be able to communicate like that.

There are excellent practical tips in this episode too which I am so grateful to be able to share with you all.

"I think that's probably the one thing that shocked me most working much more directly with the dental provider was that I'd often heard the team refer to extractions and it's only when you actually go to a general anaesthetic session where a three year old is coming in to have all of their baby teeth removed, because they have become too decayed to be retained that you realise we've still got a serious problem in this country with understanding how to protect our teeth for the whole of our lives".  Alison Reid - CEO Community Dental Services

01 Dec 2020#90: Becoming an Observer of Your thoughts00:11:42

As we continue in our leadership journey there are many things, we can use to our advantage in the quest to be the best leaders we can be. I have found that becoming an observer of your thoughts is a powerful way to enhance conversations and to find the right course of action.

In today’s episode, I share one of my leadership lessons on how to become an observer of your thoughts. I talk about how to step back to look and thing about the situations you are in before acting. I share how powerful it can be to put yourself in the shoes of others, to be conscious of your language, your mindset and what you say to others. I share that if we allow ourselves this time to think it can really enhance our conversations and our actions.

07 Nov 2019#15: MBAs... More than Just a Masters00:12:01

BH015 MBAs...More than Just a Masters

Is it truly worth getting your MBA in the healthcare industry? Does a master’s degree really give you a ‘leg up’ over your competition and help you land the prestigious positions you want for your career? How can a busy healthcare professional fit continuing education into their already busy lifestyle while raising a family and helping patients? As a healthcare professional with an MBA and a busy home-life and work-life, I’m frequently asked these important questions.

In today’s episode, I share my thoughts on whether earning your master’s degree in healthcare is truly necessary and how MBAs open more doors of opportunities beyond a framed piece of paper for your office wall. I discuss how earning your MBA can improve your time-management, presentation, and leadership skills. I also share the process I used to balance working full-time in the healthcare industry while raising a family and earning my MBA.

“An MBA education enhances your understanding of the sector that you’re working with.” - Tara Humphrey

This week on The Business of Healthcare:

  • Why I decided to earn my MBA
  • How my journey as an entrepreneur in the healthcare industry began
  • How healthcare employers can benefit from hiring professionals with master’s degrees
  • The benefits of earning your MBA
  • How going back to school to earn your MBA helps you hone your presentation skills
  • How earning an MBA shows your dedication and commitment to your field and career
  • How to apply the frameworks you learned from your MBA education into your day-to-day process at work
  • How earning your MBA impacts your confidence
  • The process I used to balance my personal life and work-life while earning my master’s degree

01 Mar 2023#232 How to stop overdelivering and sustainably deliver to a high standard00:08:39

One reoccurring thought I am having currently is around the concept of over-delivering.

The age-old saying is that “we should under promise and over deliver and then everyone’s happy, but I don’t think this approach in the field of healthcare is sustainable.

Most people just want what you said you would do, and for you to be nice to them during your interactions.

If they get it quicker than what you originally said, then great, but I think the first thought should be what is the minimum high-quality standard we should be working to every single time, and to be consistent with this.

At THC, I used to take pride in overdelivering, only to find ;

·      The additional service or thing we gave went unnoticed or unappreciated

·      The additional service ate into profitability

·      We created an expectation that we then felt we needed to maintain, which became stressful, and sometimes we resented the effort we put in, which was 100% our fault and not theirs

I think we do this because:

·      We want to be liked

·      We are frightened of saying no

·      We are genuinely trying to be helpful

·      We think it’s good for business

·      We think it will give us that competitive edge

·      Because we don’t value our time

·      We are insecure

So, without this turning into a therapy session, look at all the activities in your portfolio ask yourself;

1.     What is working well regarding the delivery of your work?

2.     Are there any areas where you feel you are going above and beyond, which is not serving you?

3.     Be really honest and reflect on why you are in this situation, taking radical responsibility for your actions.

4.     Then ask yourself,  what one thing could I do to remedy this situation without making up stories and excuses as to why things can't change

5.     If you are not sure of what is expected of you, then ask your manager or client, or you set the expectation

6.     Finally, put your plan into action.

And remember, most people simply want what you said you were going to do and then be nice to them in your communications.

Douglas, a mental health nurse and digital influencer, discusses his journey from being an engineer to becoming a nurse and a politician. He talks about the importance of understanding human behavior and the value he can offer in the mental health field.

Tara & Douglas discuss various health issues, including dental health, population health management, and the challenges of an aging population. Douglas also highlights the value of personal development and being authentically oneself while studying and learning to maximise skills.

01 Feb 2023#228 How to choose which events to attend00:19:08

Let’s get event planning!

We are all well versed in mandatory training and where development within our individual roles is measured by the ‘must do’ workplace-based courses but when it comes to the events we choose, how do we target those which are most likely to make the biggest impact on our personal growth, and in our learning and progression as businesses and business leaders?

Before the ‘new year, new me’ effect truly wears off (!) and diaries fill up even further, I bring to you a podcast episode focused on my own approach to events planning; both in terms of benchmarking and recognising my own personal development goals, and when considering the design and delivery of THC Primary Care’s own events.

Listen on to hear my advice and experiences about:

  • Why not to book events too far in advance (unless there are more complex travel and logistical implications)

  • When timing matters (especially when it comes to release of new guidance or embedding new process locally)

  • How attending events which are not necessarily role or sector-specific can also be incredibly empowering

  • What to consider when choosing your events, and thinking carefully about what you really want to get out of them, be it; opportunities to network or connect with peers, access to industry insights and policy development, completion of formal professional development, and / or marketing your product or services.

I also offer insight into my approach in putting together our PCN Plus live event, which is open for registration NOW for all PCN leaders and takes place in Nottingham on Wednesday 1st March.

And my other recommended events?

The Primary Care Conference hosted by The NHS Confederation on 22nd February 2023

Best Practice London from 8th to 9th March 2023

NHS ConfedExpo 2023 in Manchester from the 14th to 15th June 2023

I also mention reading the book ‘The Art of Gathering’ and the advice I have taken about events management from Jessica Smith, Co-Founder at SomX. Both speak of the importance of value in an event, not just what we can get from them, something I have embraced and taken to heart.

12 Jan 2021#99: How to Overcome the Fear of Selling00:33:05

As we are soon to be approaching our 100th podcast episode, I wanted to address the topic of selling. Whether that is selling products and services or selling ideas, I know many of you find this challenging for various reasons, and likewise, I have also struggled with this.

The topic of selling is HUGE, so I won’t attempt to cover everything in just one episode. Today I will cover:

  1. Background on my own consultancy

I run a consultancy specialising in supporting Primary Care Networks, general practices, GP federations providing business consultancy and interim project and operational management. We also work with healthcare entrepreneurs and people wanting to establish a service in the field of health.

  1. The fear of selling and why we buy

I think many people fear selling their services because they do not want to come across as too salesy, they do not want to put people off and be seen as annoying. I also think there is a big fear that they won’t be liked.

  1. Valuing your own and other people’s expertise

Today I’m asking you – would you expect your employees to turn up to work for free? If you hired their services, would you expect a personal trainer, an assistant, an accountant, or a solicitor to work for free?

You have the expertise; you have the qualifications and the track record. You already give tonnes of value for free. The next imperative step is to get paid.

  1. How to show someone your credentials and expertise

There are many ways you can showcase your credentials and expertise. I share some of the things that I do including:

  • Blog writing
  • Free resources
  • Guest speaking
  • Sharing testimonials
  • Sharing Case studies
  • Sending weekly newsletters
  • Tips and advice on social media
  • Offering help in WhatsApp groups.

What could work for you?

Keep listening and over the next few weeks, I will talk you through how to sell and more importantly how to sell with confidence.

Work with me

I offer two key services:

  1. Interim primary care network management support
  2. Coaching calls for healthcare professionals

10 Jan 2024#286 How I Plan My Week00:09:51

In the episode, I am going to take you behind the scenes of how I plan my time for the next few weeks in my health care consultancy,

For the past 8 and half years, I have been running THC Primary Care providing interim management, consultancy, training and facilitation to Primary Care Networks & Clinical Commissioning groups which are now called Integrated Care Boards (ICBs)

Each week I look at my diary for the next 2 weeks, and I split my time in time in 5 broad areas.

1.     Family commitments

2.     Team

3.     Client deliverables

4.     Diary commitments

5.     Brand building activities

When it comes to the tool we use,

We share our work priorities in Microsoft Team teams for clarity and transparency

We use Asana to store the progress of specific project tasks, and we also use Asana to manage our content schedule.

And I use my ipad and an app called good notes to manage my day to day tasks.

01 Jun 2021#133 Lesson Learnt from Letting People Go00:17:08

#133 Lessons learnt from letting people go

In this solo episode, I am going to be talking with you and sharing with you, my experience and lessons learned of letting people go from the business.  The reason why I'm sharing this with you is that in the six years to date that I've been in business, I have let people go due to redundancy and in preparing for these really difficult conversations, I was scouring the internet to try to find how to make somebody redundant and what to do when you need to let someone go and there are millions of articles, but the majority are written from a place of somebody teaching you the textbook way of how to do it. But what I was looking for was to hear of a business owner that had done it themselves, and I hope this podcast helps you should you find yourself in this situation.

Topics to listen out for;

  • What is best for the business?
  • What does this business need to grow?
  • What people do we need on the team?
  • What financially makes sense?
  • What is preventing me from taking the next step?

#171 Understanding the context you work within

So in this podcast, I just wanted to really briefly give my take on why it's so important we really understand and study the context that we work within.  We are all the centre of our own universe and we all want people to do what we want them to do and sometimes we forget that we are working in a complex adaptive system.

Today I am speaking with Rachel Dunscombe who is the CEO at NHS Digital Academy and Principal at a company called Tektology. Rachel is also a member of the UK Artificial Intelligence Council.  We discuss selling into the NHS and what elements need to be aligned, confidence, boundaries and managing expectations.

“ I can’t let people down, that’s part of what my thing is.  Managing expectations and not stemming the flow of that ability to deliver.  I feel like I have to help people find somewhere where they can go with it and quite often I have done and I think I am also good at spotting where an idea is viable or not”. Rachel Dunscombe

18 Nov 2021#179 Comparison & Fear of Missing Out00:19:03

This week on The Business of Healthcare Podcast I discuss Comparison & Fear of Missing Out.

It's something even the most confident of people can worry about and I have to remember that even with the best planning in the world, sometimes you then have to take a step back.

We need to prioritise, think about the pressure to contribute and become better at saying no, it's not a bad thing.

It's difficult trying to balance all the plates sometimes, but take a step back, breathe and look at the bigger picture.

03 Feb 2022#188 How to build Legitimacy00:17:48

This week on The Business of Healthcare Podcast I am discussing Building Legitimacy.

Having a boundary spanning role and building legitimacy go hand in hand.  It can feel like you are constantly trying to build legitimacy and when you join a new organisation – you have to start from scratch and you have to show who you are and share your values.

Other people can build your legitimacy by word of mouth testimonial / referral and this is really important, but you still have to live up to this expectation.  Do this by trying to get to know people, make it personal and make it not all about you but showcase your experience.

Points that are discussed

  • Offer your help with no expectation
  • Quietly putting out fires in the background that other people don't know that is there.
  • See the light at the end of the tunnel
  • It’s hard but so rewarding
  • Reflect on those little successes

You need to understand the context you work within – please take a listen to my episode 171 Understanding the context you work within by clicking here to explore this further

The most practical piece of advice I can offer is, be visible do what you say you are going to do and make the time to genuinely get to know people and be yourself.

15 Dec 2020#94: What Leader Do You Want to be Now?00:14:17

We all turn to trusted colleagues or friends for advice, but sometimes we want real advice, not just to be told how brilliant we are. When you find those colleagues it’s their advice that will push you to being a better leader and help you go in the right direction.

Today I’m talking about how you don’t have to do everything by yourself, asking for and getting help can make you a stronger leader. Asking for advice can steer you in the right direction of people or of tools and resources. I also share how it’s important to understand what your organisation, business or team requires of you now. The leader you needed to be five years ago will be different to the leader you need to be right here and now. I talk about asking ourselves what is needed for us to be the leader we want to be - now.

“I’m so happy that I made the decision and really reflected on it and slept on it, got out of my own way and just asked for help.” Tara Humphrey

This week on The Business of Healthcare:

  • The importance of real advice from friends and colleagues.
  • Why you don’t have to do everything by yourself.
  • Other people can help you see the things you can’t.
  • How advice can steer you in the right direction.
  • The importance of using the expertise around you.
  • Why you should ask yourself what the business requires of you.
  • The importance of being the leader you need to be now.
