15 Jul 2023The Un-gentrified Body. A conversation with Adam David Bencomo00:52:06

Adam David Bencomo is a photographic artist currently based out of Baltimore, Maryland. Adam came to us in 2020 presenting a unique perspective on the queer bodies of larger men. His humor and light are threaded throughout his different series of photographs and give a perspective that welcomes all types of men into the queer world. Adam identifies as male-ish. Adam uses both they/them/their and he/him/his pronouns. They are in the process of dismantling toxic masculinity and all the negative traits that have come with what it means to “be a man.” Their work deals with a variety of subjects including but not limited to queer identity and subcultures, memorialism, gentrification, public art interaction, human consumption, and human usage.Currently, Adam has been focusing on queer subcultures and what it means to identify as a queer person of color. Additionally, they have come to celebrate radical body acceptance in queer culture by humanizing bodies that do not fit the mold of what is considered traditionally “good-looking.” They create queer art by humanizing their subjects while preserving the unique cultures to which they belong.

23 Sep 2023Journey of Transformation. A conversation with Alex Cabrera (Español)01:02:47

Through introspection and a profound exploration of his past, he embarks on a transformative journey, assuming the roles of actor, spectator, and photographer engaged in constant dialogue. Within this intimate process, he unearths the characters and memories that serve as catalysts for his creative expression. The themes of body, gender, and memory take center stage in Cabrera's artistic endeavors. Each of his photographs serves as a window into his personal intimacy, capturing hidden desires, unsettling discomforts, and the intricate web of relationships that have shaped his identity. 27 Dec 2023Holiday Bonus Podcast Episode: The Gaze Reimagined: A Candid Chat with Queer Painter Zara Monet00:37:30

Get ready for a special journey in our latest bonus podcast episode featuring the remarkable Zara Monet, a Los Angeles-based Queer painter. I had the pleasure of meeting Zara several years ago when our studios neighbored each other in Ventura, California. This meeting sparked a connection that has flourished into a profound artistic dialogue.

This episode is a time capsule. We're taking you back to the first five months of the Covid-19 pandemic, a period that redefined our world and the art community. Picture this: we're 1200 miles apart, connected only through the digital lifeline of Zoom, navigating the uncertain waters of quarantine lockdowns.

In our conversation, we dive deep into the politically charged atmosphere of that time, where movements like Black Lives Matter, Feminism, and Queer politics were not just intersecting but actively collaborating. We explore how words can be both a shield and a bridge, serving as armor in challenging times and as connectors that bring us closer in solidarity and understanding.

Zara's insights and experiences as a Queer painter provide a unique lens through which we examine these complex themes. Her voice adds an invaluable layer to the discourse around art, identity, and activism during one of the most tumultuous periods in recent history.

So, I invite you to join us on this reflective and enlightening journey. Tune in to this bonus episode available on your favorite podcasting platforms tonight. Let's travel back together to those intense days, and rediscover the power of art and conversation in shaping our understanding of the world.

06 Apr 2023Ugly, Beautiful, Vulgar, and Free. A conversation with Costa Gorel01:04:26

There is a long history of art made during times of war which can be used to paint a broad brush stroke over the experiences of the multitudes. If you are studying art history or at all interested in the stories of those affected, you discover the voices of humanity and the inhumane acts of violence live in proximity to life and beauty. Costa Gorel left Moscow to participate in Art Madrid in the spring of 2022 and had no idea he would become one of those voices. Gorel’s art had been shipped to Madrid to sell, his studio lay dormant, his dog waiting at home, his family hoping for success. Art Madrid had proved a success selling out all his paintings, so he and his wife traveled to meet friends in Vienna. On day two of vacation Russia invaded Ukraine and Gorel became a refugee.

08 Jul 2023The Emperor's New Clothes. A conversation with Robert Rausch00:59:27

You know when you meet someone special. Someone with that light shining bright and full of talent. Robert Rausch came to us as part of Fotografia 2021 and joined the residency program to develop several new projects. His photography is an astonishing amalgamation of painted and sculpted objects which create their own worlds. It also doesn't hurt that Rausch is extremely humble and collaborative in his processes. We got to catch up after some time apart and reflect on how things continue to change but also stay the same.

Featured in the Efímero | Vida, Muerte, Arte exhibition, Eszter’s pieces evoke deep reflection on life, death, and the stories that linger after we’re gone. Her art is not meant to last but to live on in the memory of those who experience it—challenging our notions of permanence and celebrating the beauty of impermanence.

03 Oct 2024Bonus Interview | Alonso Yañez | Mexico City, MX.00:08:36

We’re excited to release a bonus interview with Alonso Yañez, available in Spanish with English subtitles, just days before the premiere of his latest work En el laberinto (Into the Maze), created during his online residency with The Bureau of Queer Art.

Alonso Yañez’s latest creation, Laberinto, draws viewers into a mesmerizing journey through the complex intersections of life, death, and identity. Featured in the Efímero | Vida, Muerte, Arte exhibition, this piece serves as a vivid metaphor for the corridors of human desires, societal expectations, and the unrelenting cycle of life and death. The labyrinth itself becomes a symbol of our personal struggles—an intricate web of decisions, desires, and experiences that shape who we are, while also trapping us within their patterns.

Yañez, a participant in The Bureau of Queer Art’s online residency program, explores this tension between personal transformation and the systems that bind us. The corridors of his labyrinth are not mere walls but are formed by layers of stories, emotions, and histories. As viewers engage with the piece, they are asked to confront the mazes in their own lives—their own cycles of rebirth and loss, freedom and constraint. Yañez’s work doesn’t offer a straightforward escape but instead challenges us to find meaning in the journey itself.

Crafted during an intense period of creative development, Laberinto merges visual poetry with deep philosophical exploration. His work becomes both a reflection of our inner worlds and a guide, gently pushing us to recognize the beauty, chaos, and inevitable struggle of existence. His careful use of materials and composition invites us to look deeper, beyond the immediate layers of complexity, to uncover what’s hidden in the turns and twists of the maze.

As we approach the premiere of this new piece, we invite you to experience Alonso Yañez’s unique vision firsthand. The bonus interview offers an intimate glimpse into his process, thoughts, and the inspirations behind his work, enriching our understanding of this powerful new addition to Efímero.

Don’t miss the chance to explore Laberinto—a thought-provoking visual journey that, like life itself, offers as many questions as answers.

We also want to offer our eternal gratitude to Xuan Rios who continues to help support this project with his video talents @xuanrios (IG)

23 Aug 2024Bonus Episode | Stefan Hagen | Foto(grafia) 202100:39:12

Welcome to a special episode of The Bureau of Queer Art. In this episode, we dive into the archives to revisit an insightful conversation with visiting artist Stefan Hagen, who participated in our Foto(grafia) 2021 group exhibition in Mexico City. Stefan's work, part of his series Encompassing, brings a unique perspective to photography, exploring the relationship between time, space, and the limitations of our perception.

Stefan's process is both meditative and experimental. He leaves his cameras alone, allowing them to record time and space as they unfold, independent of his presence. Whether he's walking away, sleeping, or simply letting time pass, the cameras capture what they can—defined by the limitations of the optics and the movements of celestial bodies. Yet, as Stefan poignantly notes, even the most sophisticated equipment can't fully encapsulate the vastness of space and time. His work, like *Pilot Peak 1*, evokes a sense of the sublime, depicting places of historical significance, such as where the Donner Party struggled through the mud in 1846, reminding us that some spaces are larger than we can ever fully comprehend.

As we look back on this impactful project, we're excited to announce that we are now accepting applications for Foto(grafia) 2025. This annual group exhibition will take place during Art Week CDMX in February 2025, one of the most vibrant and international art weeks in Mexico City.

In addition, we're seeking an elite group of artists for our online residency incubator, designed to prepare artists for solo and group exhibitions on platforms like Artsy, and in art fairs and other prominent events during Art Week CDMX 2025. These intimate groups will meet once a week over 12 weeks, providing an intensive, collaborative environment for artists to refine their work and prepare for these significant exhibitions.

For more information and to apply, visit TheBureauOfQueerArt.com. Don't miss this opportunity to be part of an extraordinary journey of artistic growth and international exposure.

08 Jan 2025FOTO(grafia) 2025 | Brian Van Camerik | Los Angeles, CA.00:12:22

Season 6, Episode 1 | Brian Van Camerik

In the premiere of Season 6, we explore the transformative artistry of Brian Van Camerik. Known for his meticulous homage to history and queer resilience, Van Camerik reclaims the narrative of queer identity through his Homosocial project and the poignant series A Little Queer. Inspired by 16th-century portrait miniatures, his work layers historical elegance with contemporary queerness, turning slurs and symbols of stigma into emblems of empowerment.

This episode delves into the intimate windows Van Camerik creates—both in his art and his reflections on queerness, HIV/AIDS, and the ongoing redefinition of identity. “The term ‘queer’ was once a slur,” he shares. “Now it’s a source of pride. My work engages with other slurs and taboos to guide them toward a similar reassessment.”

Join us as Van Camerik discusses how his art challenges stigma, celebrates queer intimacy, and rewrites the narratives surrounding the HIV/AIDS crisis. His insights illuminate the power of art to transform pain into beauty and reclaim humanity’s overlooked fragments.

Visit Foto(grafia) 2025 at The Studio Door in San Diego, CA, with the show opening January 8th. Van Camerik’s work will be featured as part of the group exhibition until February 8th and online with the Foto(grafia) group show or his solo exhibition A Little Queer.

Stream the episode now on iHeart, Spotify, or Apple Podcasts, and discover Van Camerik’s work in Volume 4 of TBQA: Pink Tide, available for free at TheBureauOfQueerArt.com.

09 Feb 2024Welcome to Season 3 and Art Week CDMX 202400:10:00

Welcome to the Art Week CDMX 2024 edition of The Bureau of Queer Art, a pivotal moment as we unveil our third volume and season. This year’s edition is particularly special as it brings together an eclectic mix of artists from all three volumes and seasons of our magazine and podcast, showcasing the evolution and diversity of queer and queer-allied contemporary art.

As curator, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the journey we have embarked upon. We have traversed a path that has been illuminated by the creativity, courage, and unapologetic expression of the artists we’ve featured. In this edition, we celebrate the new and honor the past, weaving together a tapestry of narratives that span the entire spectrum of our publication’s history.

This year's collaboration extends beyond the walls of Art Gallery Studios, embracing the vibrant artistic community of Colonia Juarez. In partnership with Farmacia Internacional and our participation in the sixth edition of Clavo Movimiento, we are casting a wider net, creating a rich and interconnected queer art experience throughout this culturally rich neighborhood. This expansion is not just a physical one; it symbolizes the growing influence and reach of queer art in our society.

This edition is a vibrant exploration into the realms of art that challenge, inspire, and redefine. From Costa Gorel’s resonant narratives of resistance to Jessica Ledwich’s transformative artistry in Mexico City, each piece is a reflection of the artist’s unique journey. Miguel Casco’s ‘Send Nudes’ challenges our notions of intimacy and vulnerability, while Paul Gravett’s ‘Color Studies’ meld traditional photography with contemporary art, creating a mesmerizing visual narrative.

We are excited to showcase the diverse range of talents that have graced our magazine and podcast over the years. Artists like Nancy Oliveri, with her pioneering work in AI and photography, and Leah Cupino, with her insightful explorations of geography and memory, are just a few examples of the myriad voices that have enriched our publication.

To our loyal fans and new readers alike, we offer a unique opportunity: the chance to immerse yourselves in the rich history of The Bureau of Queer Art. We invite you to visit ArtGalleryStudios.com where you can download all three editions of our magazine for free. This is a chance to revisit the journeys of artists from our past volumes and to discover new inspirations in the current edition.

Moreover, our podcast, now in its third season, offers an intimate glimpse into the studios and minds of contemporary queer and allied artists. It’s an auditory journey through the creative landscapes of these incredible talents, providing deeper insights into their processes, inspirations, and the stories behind their art.

As we celebrate Art Week CDMX 2024, we are not just showcasing art; we are fostering a community, building connections, and creating a space where queer art is not just displayed but lived and experienced. We are weaving a narrative that goes beyond the canvas, beyond the photograph, and into the very heart of what it means to be a queer or queer-allied artist in today’s world.

Join us in this celebration of artistry, identity, and community. Let us explore together the narratives that have shaped our past, define our present, and will illuminate our fexceptionuture. Welcome to a journey of discovery, inspiration, and unbridled creativity. Welcome to The Bureau of Queer Art, Art Week CDMX 2024 edition.

05 Feb 2025 TBQA Vol 8 | Sebastian M. Tovar | The Boundaries of Being | Los Angeles, CA00:20:46

Sebastian M. Tovar’s paintings resonate with a rare and luminous complexity, inviting the viewer into a world that is at once deeply personal and profoundly universal. As part of Volume 8 of The Bureau of Queer Art, his exhibition at Casa Cultura Emilio Caballido during Art Week CDMX captures the essence of a journey—through identity, memory, and human connection—with all its inherent contradictions and moments of revelation. Each canvas serves as a portal to an emotional landscape where the vibrancy of queerness meets the rawness of vulnerability, forming a narrative that feels both intimate and boundless.

09 Dec 2023Between Disco Balls and Philosophy: Leo Wang00:27:28

In the sprawling tapestry of Chicago—a city where architectural grandeur and the ethereal beauty of Lake Michigan coalesce—we find the intellectual and aesthetic locus for sculptor and installation artist Leo Wang. This metropolis, notorious for its mercurial climes, serves not merely as a home but as a metaphysical playground for Wang, igniting a confluence of humor, rich symbolism, and layered cultural dialogues. For Wang, this Windy City has been both an academic and spiritual hearthstone, having completed his graduate studies at the venerated School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). Wang philosophically quips, “You could say Chicago’s weather keeps you on your toes, much like my work.” Ah, the ever-elusive nature of artistic expression—temperamental, fleeting, but ceaselessly compelling us to evolve or face existential obsolescence.

To encapsulate, the art of Leo Wang isn’t just a nuanced play of opposites; it’s a complex dialogue—a polyphonic symphony that dances through the spaces between cultural identities, caution and liberation, and the fleeting and the everlasting. His oeuvre serves as a compelling compass in an epoch where navigating the labyrinth of our ever-complicated identities and spaces is more challenging yet more vital than ever. Indeed, Wang’s art emerges as a luminous guide through the twilight zones of contemporary existence.

Witness firsthand his work's cerebral and sensorial tapestry by visiting our sponsor gallery, Dabster Arts Inc., on Artsy.net. But the journey doesn’t have to end there. To feed your intellect and soul further, listen to the full podcast, where we unfurl the many layers of Wang’s art and philosophy, exclusively on The Bureau of Queer Art.

We're casting for our 2024 adventures: art fairs, exhibitions, and our very own The Bureau of Queer Art podcasts and magazines.

26 Aug 2023Messy is Beautiful. A conversation with Jessica Ledwich01:16:43

A new episode just released - Messy is Beautiful. A conversation with Jessica Ledwich!

Journey with us as we traverse the captivating landscapes of artistry, igniting connection and expression within the Queer and Allied studio art community. Experience artistry at its finest, unified in both form and content. This is more than a podcast and magazine; it's an odyssey through the boundless realms of creativity.

Messy Beautiful explores notions of collective shame and desire, giving voice to the more unconscious parts of Ledwich’s psyche. With much of her work drawing from themes of perversity and pleasure, she seeks to find a productive tension in the space between desire and taboo to create work that is both erotic and visceral. The glossy and hyper-saturated images draw on the aesthetics and codes used in advertising, to display subject matter such as flowers, food, and the female body. Ultimately, Jessica is interested in exploring the ambiguity and complexity of the emotions of female desire and pleasure. Apply to participate in our exhibitions and publications at ArtGalleryStudios.com. Our call for applications for the Autumn issue is now OPEN to be included in our podcast, magazine, and or the Artsy exhibition.

06 Jan 2024The Artistry of Sho Peng00:20:02

In the heart of the Bay Area, California, we find the enigmatic artist known as Sho Peng, a creative spirit whose journey from the world of novels to the realm of paintings is nothing short of captivating. Sho's story is one of artistic evolution, where the influence of literary giants and renowned painters converge to create a body of work that challenges perception and stirs the soul.

Sho's initial love for writing novels led him down a path adorned with the prose of literary luminaries such as Franz Kafka, Milan Kundera, and Fyodor Dostoevsky. However, the course of his life took a sudden and transformative turn when he encountered the paintings of David Hockney, a moment he describes as nothing short of life-changing.

Art Gallery Studios presents our latest residency exhibition: "Que ser un hombre" by Mexican artist Andre Juarez Troncoso, curated by Micheal Swank. Opening August 6, 2024, to January 11, 2025, exclusively online with Artsy.net. (Link in Bio)
“Que ser un hombre” (What It Means to Be a Man) offers a profound exploration of gender identity and societal acceptance, focusing on the transgender male experience in Mexico. Andre Juarez Troncoso's work transcends documentation, presenting a powerful statement on identity, masculinity, and the struggle for acceptance.
Recognized as “Outstanding Work” at POY LATAM 2023, Troncoso’s sensitive handling of subjects ensures their dignity and respect, balancing visibility with privacy. Though not a trans man himself, Troncoso shares many life experiences with his subjects, creating a bond of trust that enriches his work.
Join us in celebrating this transformative series that challenges societal norms and advocates for a more inclusive world. “Que ser un hombre” is more than art; it’s a movement and a call to awareness about the lives of transgender men in Mexico.
Despite the impact of these images, we've had to crop them to navigate social media algorithms and the prejudices they enforce. This series aims to reflect on gender identity struggles and foster societal conversations about transgender experiences, challenging stereotypes and misconceptions. See the full images on Artsy.net.

11 Jan 2025FOTO(grafia) 2025 | Francesca Reina | Playa Del Carmen, MX00:12:07

Sueños de Cenote invites viewers into the sacred, underwater world of Mexican cenotes through the lens of Italian photographer Francesca Reina. Her work transcends the surface, capturing serene yet powerful moments where human vulnerability meets natural beauty.
In these ancient sanctuaries, cherished by the Maya as spiritual portals, Reina’s subjects shed societal labels and merge with their surroundings, reflecting a timeless unity between people and nature. Each photograph is a balance of tranquility and flowing movement, embodying the delicate rhythms of life and the resilience of our natural world.
Diving without scuba gear, Reina’s process allows her to capture raw, unfiltered moments of connection between herself, her subjects, and the water. Her images reveal a message of empowerment, transformation, and self-expression, inviting us to face our fears and discover strength within.
This exhibition is both a tribute and a call to action—urging us to honor, protect, and reconnect with our natural environment. Sueños de Cenote offers a peaceful realm, inviting us to see beyond surface identities and reconnect with a shared essence that unites all life.

27 Jul 2024Garden of Penises | Ximena Alarcón | Bonus Episode00:52:24

In October 2021, under our previous name PRPG.mx, we hosted an insightful exhibition titled "Perspectivas Humanas." This show featured seven artists across six spaces, exploring the human form, perceptions, experiences, and storytelling methods. These narratives aimed to comfort, remind, educate, and unite us as humans, emphasizing our shared experiences and the diversity of voices in the art world. Visitors, referred to as "the experimenters," were invited to navigate the gallery spaces and engage deeply with the art, challenging their views on discourse, culture, and the pivotal moments in history.

One of the standout contributors was Ximena Alarcón, whose provocative sculptures highlighted the limitations and lack of reciprocity in intimacy within a male-dominated world. By adopting a feminist perspective, Alarcón encouraged viewers to re-evaluate their own viewpoints—sometimes drawing them into voyeurism, at other times into a metaphorical blindness, and often challenging them with deceptive stereotypes. Her works, featuring a mix of reflective surfaces and wood, were designed to provoke self-assessment and facilitate conversations on entrenched societal beliefs.

Now known as Art Gallery Studios, we are revisiting this impactful exhibition through a special feature on our podcast. As a bonus episode, we present an interview with Ximena Alarcón, exploring her feminist approach and the themes that resonate throughout her body of work, including gender, social inequalities, racism, and empathy. This insightful discussion is available on your favorite podcast platform. Additionally, members of our exclusive Patreon community, "The Bureau of Queer Art," can access and download the show catalog as part of their support for our community. This initiative not only reflects on past achievements but also continues to foster a dialogue about the evolving narratives within contemporary art.

06 Oct 2024Bonus Podcast Episode! From the cover of our English Edition of TBQA Volume 5!00:14:46

Joan takes us through her transformative journey in creating Duo Totem in this episode. This piece, originally painted 20 years ago, has evolved to reflect the raw emotion of survival, love, and queer identity. After experiencing the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Cox infused her work with deep personal symbolism, marking a profound rebirth in her life and artistic practice.

Through her art, Cox challenges conventions and celebrates the beauty of queer connection, reminding us of the strength found in vulnerability and the power of love.

Tune in to hear more about Joan Cox's artistic process, the emotional depth of Duo Totem, and how her work reflects the resilience of the human spirit. You won’t want to miss this intimate conversation about survival, transformation, and queer expression.

12 Aug 2023A Feast for the Eyes and Soul. A conversation with Miguel Casco00:57:25

In Miguel Casco’s “El desayuno” (The Breakfast) a group of young men and women gather naked to perform the sensual feast of eating. They meet in the darkness of the early morning and slowly shed shadow and clothing. Perhaps they are there to perform a Dionysian feast in which their bodies are integrated with food and nature as a puzzle that brings together actions and observable forms of behavior? Presented with his documentary film Desayunos, it begs the question: Does the video reproduce the paintings or the paintings the video? “I pay more attention to the synthetic edition because the search for an aestheticized documentary is more noticeable there, There is a post-production (Bourriaud would say) that strips the effect, that makes us understand that painting was born from video, that the technical destiny has been inverted, that the old ways of looking are now."

13 Feb 2024Metamorphosis in Sculpture: Mason Weiss’s Queer Odyssey: BANNED!00:22:03

For contemporary transgender artist Mason Weiss, art is a journey of metamorphosis deeply rooted in his queer identity. Weiss’s unique approach to sculpture involves textiles and beadwork, crafting self-portraits and interactive pieces that are both a reclamation of personal history and a break from societal norms. His “freestyle stitching” technique eschews traditional patterns, mirroring the liberating essence of queerness. Childhood memorabilia inspires his work, blending playful nostalgia with personal narratives, creating a new mythology that fosters understanding and compassion.

We hope this episode reaches you and you will share it with everyone you know. Unfortunately, our social media is being censored, and we are restricted on most platforms for the content we publish.

" “There’s something very interesting about food, especially in Western culture. It’s very fetishized,” she observed, touching upon the multifaceted meanings in her art." - @jessicaledwich_artist (Instagram)

In the bustling heart of Mexico City, within the nurturing walls of @ca_sa_lu, a transformation unfolded in a ground-floor art studio. It’s a story of metamorphosis, as Australian artist Jessica Ledwich traded the familiar landscapes of her homeland for the vibrant, pulsating streets of Ciudad de México (CDMX). As her residency at Casa Lu unfolded, so did a new chapter in her artistic narrative that I had the privilege to witness and chronicle. In this interview, we had the unique opportunity to speak to the artist while she was in residency and one month after returning to Australia.

16 Dec 2023Transmutation of Identity: The Artistic Journey of Gwen Kelling00:40:10

@theydy.bug

For Gwen, sculpture is far more than a mere artistic endeavor—it’s a central component of her identity. “I strive to create works that are not just visually compelling but also intellectually stimulating. I want my art to be a starting point for conversations, for deeper explorations into the human experience,” she says. This urge to engage audiences in deeper dialogue is conceptualized through her artistic philosophy of ‘pluripotency,’ a term she borrows from her background in botany. “Pluripotency in botany refers to the ability of a stem cell to develop into multiple forms. For me, this term represents the inherent potential within materials and within ourselves to become something more, to transform,” Gwen elaborates. The term acts as an apt metaphor for her life and art, both of which are characterized by the transformative power of potential—the potential for materials to morph into profound works of art, and the potential for individuals to evolve into their most authentic selves. Whether she’s shaping metal or shaping conversations, Gwen Kelling remains steadfastly committed to the transformative power of art and identity. We're casting for our 2024 adventures: art fairs, exhibitions, and our very own The Bureau of Queer Art podcasts and magazines.

08 Nov 2023The Art of Selection: Behind the Scenes of Gallery Curation01:07:00

Welcome to The Bureau of Queer Art, Season 2, Episode 1, the podcast and digital facet of our Mexico City-based Art Gallery Studios. Today, art magnates Michael Swank of Art Gallery Studios and Yessica Torres from Dabster Arts Inc., which boasts spaces in Los Angeles, Ventura, and Austin, share a virtual coffee chat. Their discussion traverses the contours of contemporary art curation, revealing what they prize in artists for their galleries.

Art Gallery Studios sits at the heart of Mexico City's burgeoning art transformation, hosting over 60 exhibitions and multiple local collaborations, reflecting the area's burgeoning international appeal and artistic revival. Swank's role has been pivotal in nurturing this cultural flourish.

Conversely, Torres's expansion into diverse locales reflects each city's unique artistic pulse: Los Angeles's global stage, Ventura's communal roots, and Austin's tech-tinged creative milieu.

Their exchange offers a glimpse into the art curation process, emphasizing professionalism and gallery-artist alignment. They discuss fostering artistic development and the implications of technology on art. Through their dialogue, the constant evolution of the art world is articulated, yet the inherent value of art remains immutable—undimmed by market fluctuations.

Leah Cupino’s ‘Erratic’ – A Journey Through Unpredictability and Transformation

In our latest episode, we sit down with Leah Cupino to explore her newest body of work, Erratic. This Artsy.net exclusive exhibition, running from December 4th, 2024, to March 4th, 2025, is a bold investigation into impermanence, resilience, and the unpredictable forces that shape our world.

Drawing inspiration from glacial erratics—boulders transported across landscapes by glaciers or volcanic eruptions—Cupino reimagines these geological wanderers as metaphors for human experience. With shimmering silk chiffon paintings, sculptures crafted from recycled plastics, and innovative materials that blur the line between natural and manmade, her work challenges us to see beauty in transformation and chaos.

Join us for an in-depth conversation as Cupino delves into the inspiration behind Erratic, the tension between permanence and fragility, and how her art captures the relentless forces of nature. A favorite of The Bureau of Queer Art magazine and podcast, Cupino returns to share the journey of her practice, from mountain adventures to her studio in Montana.

Catch the full interview in January 2025, part of Season 5 of The Bureau of Queer Art podcast, and discover how Leah Cupino turns the unpredictable into a stunning reflection of life, identity, and the power of change.

15 Mar 2024Nancy Oliveri’s Exploration of AI’s Artistic Frontier00:35:16

The genesis of Nancy Oliveri’s tryst with artificial intelligence is a compelling narrative. Her initial skepticism turned into fascination, leading her to navigate the digital realm with an artistic compass. The choice of ‘Exactly AI’ as her preferred model reflects a deliberate decision to embrace technological innovation and maintain control over the creative process.

In this artistic adventure, Oliveri metamorphoses into a maestro of the algorithmic, orchestrating a symphony of pixels that resonates with a sci-fi cadence, where each stroke of code is a brushstroke on the canvas of an alternate reality. Her journey into the realm of artificial intelligence mirrors the exploration of uncharted territories akin to a spacefaring explorer charting the unknown expanses of a digital frontier.
