We're back! This was a fun list to do, but a difficult one. So many great albums were left off my list, but I think this accurately captures my musical tastes. Goth, metal, and punk are all represented here in a wide variety, but every once in a while a curveball comes flying out of nowhere. I’ve always been proud of the fact that I can listen to a wide variety of music. You’ll find Bathory on here, but you’ll also find Janet Jackson and U2. You’re going to find goth heavyweights like The Cure and Siouxsie alongside commercialized glam metal like Motley Crue. It’s all here, and this is part one! This album was the 6th studio album released by Van Halen, and it was a more epic and diverse record than their previous releases. Featuring keyboards, but still keeping that hard rock sound, 1984 shows the band's talent as a group more than any other Van Halen record. Released 40 years ago, Ace of Spades is a badass, to the point, hard rocking album that is sure to get you pumped up. We discuss all that, the legacy of the iconic frontman Lemmy on the 5 year anniversary of his passing, and why the album still holds up today.

08 Jan 2021David Bowie-The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars01:28:16

Welcome to 2021!

First episode of the new year, and we're taking a look at David Bowie's 1972 landmark classic The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust!

We're also doing this to commemorate the fact it has been five years since David Bowie's passing back in 2016. The world lost a genius that day. This album is a testament to that.

Joining me to discuss this album is Don Grant. Don is the host of a podcast called Three Interesting Things, a podcast where they look at three of the most interesting internet stories of the week.

You can check it out here: https://threeinterestingthings.captivate.fm/ and wherever podcasts are available.

Also, don't forget we're still doing a record giveaway of Alice in Chains and their debut album Facelift! Head over to our Instagram page and like the post, follow our page, and tag a friend and you're entered to win!

22 Jan 2021Emperor-In the Nightside Eclipse00:57:40

Going in a little different direction for episode 2 of this new season! It's still winter, and so I decided to pick one of my favorite winter albums: In the Nightside Eclipse by Norwegian black metal giants Emperor.

Joining me to talk about this beautiful album is my friend, black metal fan, and former record store co-worker, Matt Kramer. We talk about the reasons this album stands out from its peers, the black metal image, Tolkien and his inspiration on this album, and more.

Combining beautiful symphonic and atmospheric sounds with harsh, cold, black metal music, In the Nightside Eclipse moved black metal to new heights and inspired hundreds, if not thousands, of new artists to do the same.

05 Feb 2021The Doors-The Doors01:33:18

On this episode, it's all about one of the best debut albums of all time!

We're talking about The Doors and their 1967 self titled album!

Sitting down to talk about this breakthrough album is Anuj Rajkumar, the creator of the Instagram page, The Legends of Music. Anuj is a massive music fan, and as seen through the Legends of Music, he knows quite a bit about it as well!

We discuss how this album fit in (or didn’t) with the 1960s Flower Power movement, what each member brought to the band, the controversies surrounding some of these songs, and what made Jim Morrison arguably the greatest frontman of all time.

Check it out!

19 Feb 2021Living Colour-Vivid01:24:28

Things get a little political on this episode as  my friend Larry Santiago (who is also a teacher and a musician) returns to discuss Vivid, the 1988 debut from Living Colour.

We talk about how this album was able to blend so many different styles together from funk, jazz, pop, metal, hip hop, and even a little country, but also touch on the messages that are still relevant today, from gentrification and racism, to cults and how our political leaders brainwash us and lead us astray. This album paved the way for bands like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, and System of a Down, and still holds up to this day as a catchy, heavy, and relevant album.

Larry's latest musical project is Big Lair and the Brown Sound. Check them out if you're into hard rock!

05 Mar 2021Queen-A Night at the Opera01:30:33

A Night at the Opera, Queen's 4th studio album, is one of the most ambitious, diverse, unique, and iconic albums ever recorded. A rock album that features just about every genre you can imagine (well besides rap), it took the band to new heights, not to mention they weren't broke after this record.

Joining me to discuss this eclectic masterpiece is Scott Ferrara. Scott hosts a podcast called The Rugby Rant where they talk all things rugby. It's a perfect combo, sports and Queen. I mean we are talking about the band that pretty much invented the sports anthem years later with "We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions."

We talk about the tracks, what each band member contributed, the diversity on this record, and if we're sick of "Bohemian Rhapsody" yet or not.

19 Mar 2021Alice in Chains-Dirt01:33:49

On this episode, my good friend, and history tour guide (focusing on macabre history of Boise, Idaho), Mark Iverson sits down with me to talk about one of our favorite albums: Dirt by Alice in Chains. Mark also happens to be from Seattle, giving him an insight into this band/music scene that few have.

Released in 1992 at the height of the Grunge explosion out of Seattle, Dirt (the second studio album by the band) took 90s rock to a whole new level of grittiness and darkness. With themes exploring drug addiction, depression, and death, and featuring the haunting and melodic vocals of Layne Staley, and the backing vocals/sludgy guitar work of Jerry Cantrell, Dirt was able to present heavy subject matter packaged in a painful, yet beautiful, manner.

We discuss the emotions in this album, the tragedies, the beauty, and Mark takes us through some of his old haunts in Seattle that are related to Alice in Chains.

02 Apr 2021PJ Harvey-Dry01:36:24

On this episode, I am joined by podcaster Bárbara Mendes Jorge, who hosts the music podcast Over/Underrated with her friend Fran. Each episode, they pick a theme (a genre, music scene, decade, etc) and pick two bands: one that is overrated, and one that is underrated and they try to get each other to see their POV.

However, Bárbara is not here to debate, she’s here to share her love for PJ Harvey and her 1992 debut album Dry. Featuring a guitar heavy blues punk sound, Polly Jean Harvey crafts elaborate stories about love, heartbreak, lust, power, sexuality, gender roles, adds biblical references, and caps it off with a twist of humor.

We discuss the genius behind the songs, as well as how, despite both being late to the PJ Harvey fanbase, she became one of our favorite artists of all time.

16 Apr 2021Massive Attack-Mezzanine01:26:27

On this next episode of The Broken Record Player Podcast, I sat down with fellow music podcaster Ian Clarke to discuss one of the most iconic albums of the 90s. Ian is involved in two podcasts related to music: We Dig Music and Free With This Month’s Issue! We Dig Music is a podcast where Ian and his friends get together to talk about what they love, music. Free With This Month’s Issue is a little more random. Taking those sampler CDs that come with music magazines, Ian and his co-hosts listen to them and discuss. It’s a mixed bag and you never know what you’re going to get!

For Massive Attack and their 1998 masterpiece Mezzanine, Ian and I knew what we were getting. One of the most melodic, atmospheric, sonically complicated, but also chill to the point of creepy, albums ever made. Mezzanine was a massive success, but the band had their doubts. It was a major departure from their previous two records, which were instrumental in setting forth the Trip Hop sound. Mezzanine was darker, less soulful, and felt like something was not quite right. There’s a feeling of paranoia, loneliness, and a little bit of anxiety, but mixed with ethereal and otherworldly vocals from Cocteau Twins singer Elizabeth Fraser, and the angelic yet eerie vocals of reggae legend Horace Andy. Mezzanine, simply put, is an album that could have come out today and few would have known the difference. It’s that well made.

Ian and I discuss the tense making of this album, how this album makes us both feel when we listen to it, and how for a band known for making Trip Hop mixed with R&B and Soul, this was a step in a new direction, and it was one that both exhausted the band, but also brought them to a new level.

30 Apr 2021Prince-Purple Rain01:39:16

On this next episode of The Broken Record Player Podcast, my buddy Tim Guill and I pay homage to the Purple One, Prince, as we dive deep into the masterpiece that is Purple Rain

Coming off the success of 1999, Prince was looking to push the envelope further. Already a star, Prince would cement his legacy with Purple Rain. It was not just an album, rather it was a testament to the genius that was Prince. Filled with classics such as the title track itself, “When Doves Cry,” “Let’s Go Crazy,” “I Would Die 4 U,” and more, Purple Rain is as close to perfection in an album as it gets. It was a more grand sound for Prince, and it brought him to superstar status on the same level as his peer (and occasional rival), Michael Jackson.

What makes this album so unique, besides the epic and grand production and quality, is that Prince is working with a band: The Revolution. Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman, Dr. Fink, Brown Mark, and Bobby Z, worked tirelessly with their mad scientist leader to craft an album that featured funky bass lines, shredding guitar solos, electronic effects, pounding drum beats, beautiful ballads, and the shrieks, screams, wails, and heartfelt vocals of Prince.

As if a groundbreaking album wasn’t enough, to showcase how ambitious Prince was in 1983, a movie of the same name was made. Tim and I discuss both as we take a look at one of the most celebrated albums, and artists, of all time.

14 May 2021Alice Cooper-Billion Dollar Babies01:21:18

On this latest episode of The Broken Record Player Podcast, I am joined once again by the host of the Metal From the Inside podcast, Sydney Taylor!

Sydney sits down with me to discuss an iconic album from her favorite artist of all time, Alice Cooper! In fact, on her podcast Metal From the Inside, Sydney recently sat down with Alice Cooper and interviewed him. Make sure you check that interview out because it’s really fascinating, and Alice is on point as always.

Billion Dollar Babies was the biggest, most epic, and most successful album the Alice Cooper band released up to that point. Featuring hit songs like “No More Mr. Nice Guy,” ''Billion Dollar Babies,” “Elected,” and “I Love the Dead,” Billion Dollar Babies told one story after another ranging from politics to bad dental trips, from road trips gone wrong to the real life controversies created by uptight politicians and parents.

At the end of the day, this album is fun, theatrical, hard rockin, and makes you feel like you’re at some macabre carnival where only you, the audience, the band, and Alice, are in on the joke.

Ryan and Matt talk about how The Sisters of Mercy, and this album in particular, influenced Matt’s music, how the record was mostly an Andrew Eldritch solo record, and how he’s not too fond of his music being labeled as goth.

Ultimately, Floodland is a catchy, dark, and timeless album that took The Sisters of Mercy to new heights, and created hit songs played in Goth clubs all over the world.

Back with me on this new episode of The Broken Record Player Podcast is Anuj Rajkumar, the creator of The Legends of Music page on Instagram! We’re discussing Soundgarden’s 1994 masterpiece Superunknown

We look at how this album took Soundgarden’s sound to another level, how they retained their heavy gritty roots while appealing to a wider audience with radio friendly songs, and how varied the album is compared to their previous releases. We also reflect on the life of Chris Cornell, and what separated him from other rock singers of the 90s.

Superunknown is a masterpiece, one of the greatest albums of the 90s. It combined the heavy sludgy riffs they were accustomed to, with more melodic, diverse sounds to make a truly unique album that stands out from their peers.

Leprosy expanded Death’s sound from their debut, Scream Bloody Gore, and really showcased the talent of Chuck. Sadly, as we discuss in the episode, Chuck’s life was cut short due to cancer, but through albums like Leprosy, he left behind a legacy that will never die.

Released in 1991, My Bloody Valentine’s second studio album changed the game. It inspired some of the biggest acts of the 90s, helped to create an entire subgenre of music, and would be on every critics top albums of the 90s list.

Combining both dreamy, drowsy sounds with aggressive and distorted guitar, Loveless was a noisy yet beautiful journey that left your ears ringing, but your mind and body uplifted.

New episode out now! I had the privilege to sit down with rapper/punk rocker from the band Old City, Mr. Tr38cho! We discussed one of the most important hip-hop albums of all time: Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) by Wu-Tang Clan!

Also be sure to check out Tr38cho’s site for music and blog posts: https://tr38cho.com

Released back in 1993, Enter the Wu-Tang brought a grittiness to East Coast Hip-Hop that hadn’t been seen before. Featuring nine unique members, all with their own styles, personalities, and influences, Wu-Tang Clan’s debut album paved the way for a new wave of East Coast rappers to make their name: Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z, and Diddy to name a few.

With its raw production, Kung-Fu movie references and samples, and its twisted sense of humor, Enter the Wu-Tang was one of a kind and it changed the rap world forever.

Kicking your ass with a wall of sound, Kyuss left ears ringing, hearts pounding, and adrenaline rushing, while being as chill as possible.
