11 Apr 2018129: Leveraging Your Voice to Grow Your Business Series Intro00:02:01

Your voice is the most undervalued asset in your business. The next three episodes of The Brassy Broadcast are a mini-series of conversations with sharp entrepreneurial women that are leveraging their mission, their voices, and their expertise to produce podcasts that are helping them grow their businesses.

Although they all work in very different fields, you will find common themes running through these conversations.

We talk a lot about creating community, building relationships, and how they define success for their podcasts. Spoiler alert: It’s not huge download numbers and money from random sponsors.

We also get into the tactical stuff. We talk about favorite tools, how their shows have evolved over time, and how they are growing their audiences and using social media to engage with them.

I’m so excited to introduce you to Shawnee Kilgore in this episode!  She is an Austin, TX based singer-songwriter living a crowd-funding fairy tale.

In 2014, Shawnee launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund her fourth solo album, A Long and Precious Road. In her video message to potential backers, a tribute to Dylan's Subterranean Homesick Blues, she held up a card that said "I'm learning to ask for help." This vulnerable and honest phrase struck a chord for one particular music fan perusing Kickstarter projects on his rare off time  Joss Whedon. Whedon, one of Hollywood's most prominent directors (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, The Avengers) loved Shawnee's music and her voice, and backed the project, taking the first step towards what would become the unlikeliest of creative partnerships.

02 Nov 201658: Music Producer Catharine Wood Talks Mixing, Mastering, and Production00:51:01

Jen chats with Catharine Wood, owner and producer at Planetwood Productions about working with corporate clients as well as singer-songwriters, what the pre-production phase of recording looks like for her, how she prefers to receive the tracks she is going to mix or master, and tips for prepping to go into the studio.

In 2000, she began producing, singing, mixing and writing on projects and, after graduating #1 in her class from Full Sail's Los Angeles Recording School in 2005, added mastering to her professional offering.

From 2005-2007 Wood engineered at Play Studios in Santa Monica (national and international commercial campaigns -- including the first iPhone commercial, the Geico "Caveman" campaign, all of the original Apple iPod "Silhouette" commercials, the Priceline "Negotiator" William Shatner campaign, Netflix, and hundreds of other highly visible campaigns -- which included engineering on Voice Over for Keifer Sutherland, William H. Macy, legends like Dick Van Dyke and many more). In Spring of '07 Wood made the full-time shift to freelance engineering, music composition, production and post production.

In 2012 Catharine was invited to join the Los Angeles Recording School's Recording Arts Program Advisory Committee. The select committee determines the curriculum of the school and its degree programs. Additionally, Wood was invited by The Recording Academy into the Producers & Engineers Wing as a GRAMMY® Voting Member. She is a Voting Member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the former Hollywood Manager and Director of Southern California for the West Coast Songwriters organization and a proud, professional member of The Society of Composers & Lyricists. In 2016, Catharine Wood was elected to the Board of Directors for the California Copyright Conference.

As a songwriter, Wood is the recipient of Nine (9) Honorable Mentions from the BILLBOARD WORLD SONG CONTEST and currently endorses Audio-Technica, A-Designs pro audio and SJC Custom Drums. Wood's custom composition projects include a commissioned theme song for ESPN's "Viernes de Combates" airing on ESPN Deportes. Her original compositions can be heard on NBC, CBS, BBC, CTV and many more. Wood's specialties include: artist producing, music mastering, mixing, vocal recording, drums recording, audio post production, music composition & production for film+tv.

31 Dec 2022185: Why Haven't You Done the Thing You Keep Saying You Want To Do?00:07:41

Why haven't you done the thing you keep saying that you want to do - start the podcast, write the book, create a course, or make YouTube videos?

Whatever your thing is - why haven't you done it? What obstacles or issues keep getting in your way?

This episode is inspired by two books I'm currently reading:

1. The Obstacle is the Way by Ryan Holiday

2. Traction by Gino Wickman

I'm sharing how I'm using inspiration and practices from both books to help me name my own obstacles and work through them, so I'm more consistent in publishing my own podcasts, YouTube videos, social media posts, and blog posts. These are all things I say I'm committed to doing for my business, but have struggled to do consistently in years past.

26 Sep 2023188: Embracing Alignment and Expanding Your Professional Impact with Amy Woodall and Lindsay Boccardo00:41:36

This episode reminded me why I started podcasting. It was an opportunity to spend time with two of my most favorite people in the world while sharing them with you. It’s a win for everyone!

Amy Woodall and Lindsay Boccardo join me for this episode. They are both returning guests, but it has been more than a minute since we last chatted.

You know those people that always make you feel better when you’ve spent time in their presence? That is how I always feel after spending time with these two! They leave me in better shape than they found me, even when I’m already having a fantastic day! I have a hunch they will do the same for you.

We are constantly told by the online business “experts” that we need to niche down. Amy and Lindsay are taking a more expansive approach to their podcasts and their work, and it is working for them. They share why they started their podcasts and what keeps them coming back. Spoiler Alert: It’s not big sponsorships and massive download numbers!

I intended to talk about podcasting, but as it goes with these two, our conversation goes deeper than just podcasting. We talk about alignment, mindfulness, authenticity, curiosity, playfulness, and of course, and how those things impact our podcast and how we show up.

As we wrapped up the episode, I felt inspired, empowered, and reconnected to why I started podcasting. Let's tap into our alignment, embrace mindfulness, live authentically, nurture our curiosity, and sprinkle a healthy dose of playfulness into our lives.

Podcasting is not just about the numbers and business strategies. It's about creating a space for connection, authenticity, and clarity. Trust your intuition, follow your heart, and let the conversations flow.

Key Takeaways

(01:45) The Power of Mindfulness: Amy reminds us that true growth and leveling come from working on the internal stuff, not the external.

(14:22) The Power of Self-Reflection: Amy shares how the fears we project on other people are really telling us something we need to discover about ourselves

(17:12) The Importance of Representation in Telling LGBTQ+ Stories: Lindsay reminds us that the story of LGBTQ+ folks doesn’t just end when they come out. It’s ongoing and it’s important to continue to hear these voices and stories.

(22:58) Worthiness and Confidence: Amy talks about how our ability to learn, recognize patterns, process, and make shifts that impact our confidence and how we view our worthiness as we grow into ourselves

(23:12) Finding Alignment: Lindsay stressed the importance of aligning our thoughts, actions, and values.

(33:59) Playfulness Fuels Connection: Lindsay emphasized the magic of playfulness in creating engaging environments and fostering connections. Through laughter and light-heartedness, we can tackle serious subjects and make them more approachable. So, let's loosen up and have some fun.

11 Nov 2022182:The Brassy Broadcast is Back00:04:00

Welcome to the latest incarnation of The Brassy Broadcast. The podcast that has taken long periods of rest and has served a variety of purposes since it launched in 2014. I'm Jen Edds, The Head Broad in Charge at The Brassy Broadcasting Company and this is my podcast.

There are a few definitions of brassy when you look them up online. Most definitions paint “brassy” in a negative light of being harsh, loud, tasteless, showy, or resembling brass in color.
And then….when you scroll down….you see brassy described as brazen, bold, audacious, unashamed, unrestrained by convention and propriety.

I want to live a brassy life - A life lived boldly, brazenly, audaciously, and unrestrained by convention and propriety.

In my world, Brassiness thrives in the intersection of curiosity, creativity, and caring no more what most folks think.

I'll be sharing what I'm learning along my own adventures to live a bold and brassy life. Here’s your disclaimer: I’m no subject matter expert. Far from it.  I’m just a curious broad full of questions.

22 Sep 2019165: SEO for Podcast Audience Growth - Podcast Marketing Series Pt 200:25:58

How Do I Optimize SEO for My Podcast?

How do we grow our podcast audience and get new listeners? How will people find my podcast?

Podcasters need a basic understanding of keywords and SEO (search engine optimization) so our podcasts can be discovered by new listeners.

How can podcasters capitalize on SEO to help new listeners find their podcasts?

Spoiler Alert: There is no magic bullet or SEO

Jennifer Denney, Digital Strategist and Owner of Elevated Marketing Solutions, breaks down what we need to understand about SEO for podcasters.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) isn’t just one thing. It is small incremental tweaks combined to impact your site’s user experience and performance in organic search results.

SEO is a long term strategy. There is no SEO magic bullet. It takes grit, time, energy, and expertise.

What is the Ideal Length for Podcast Show Notes or Blog Posts?

Jennifer does a little myth-busting here. I was under the impression that there was an ideal length for show notes. Turns out, this is not the case.

People are going to Google to get questions answered. Google is looking for you to completely cover the subject from beginning to end and do it better than anyone else.

How does Google determine who has the best answer? It’s all of those hundreds of little tweaks.

Formulating the Right Questions for SEO

Think about how your listeners are phrasing questions when they are going to Google to look for answers. What words are they using? What questions are they asking?

Get out of your own language box and how you say things. Ask your audience how they would search for an answer.

Recommended Tools for Keyword Research

Ubersuggest

SEMrush.com

Keywordtool.io

Keywordseverywhere.com

AnswerThePublic.com

How to Optimize Show Notes and Blog Posts

Optimize your show notes and blog posts because there are still folks that would rather read than listen to podcasts.

Think about having your episode transcribed. This makes it easy to create detailed show notes.

Jennifer has created a search optimization checklist to help optimize blog posts.

Don’t just describe what is in the episode.

If your intention is to share information with your audience, give them the option of how they want to consume it. Listening to a podcast is not an option for everyone.

Use the episode description, blog post, or show notes to give detailed information that actually answers questions.

  • Flow the Keywords into the content
  • Write a title that is for the user
  • Use a Title Tag
  • Use subheadings
  • Add internal and external links

18 Sep 2020169: It's Not a Priority if It's Not a Practice00:06:18

Its not a priority if its not a practice.

The one thing that has become crystal clear to me in 2020 is that if I dont have a practice around something that I say I want to accomplish, then it really isnt a priority. Its a just that would be nice.”

One of the core pillars supporting that bridge to Legendary status is RESPONSIBILITY.

As the HBIC (Head Broad in Charge), I have to take responsibility for failure to meet the goals I have scribbled down in scattered notebooks and spreadsheets.

If these goals were really priorities for me, I would have built a practice around how I would reach them.

This isnt new information. As a kid, when I wanted to make more free throws, I spent time practicing shooting free throws. I had a ritual that I followed every time I stepped to the line. I still do it. BackSpin the ball. 3 bounces. Line it up. Shoot. Follow Through.

You already know what practice looks like. Now its time to take action to achieve the priorities that really matter to you.

My process for creating practices around priorities:

1. Determine if the WHY matters enough that I will show up and put in the necessary work.

2. Outline your practice and keep it consistent.

3. Block Time on your calendar

I started a morning routine after reading Hal Elrods book The Miracle Morning a few years ago.

I always felt better when I did it, but I was inconsistent in the practice.

I got serious about committing to practicing my morning routine back in March. It was the ONE THING I could do that felt like I had some control over what was happening in a world filled with uncertainty.

The Practices in My Morning Routine

1. Work out hard for 20 minutes

2. Journal

3. Meditate

4. Work on my business and not in” my business.

Each practice has a very clear WHY attached to it.

My morning routine practice is sacred. Nothing else happens in my morning until my morning routine is completed.

Ive accomplished more in my business, during a global pandemic, because I have committed to this morning routine practice.

Now it's your turn. I want to hear from you. What practice has changed your life or business? Do you have a morning routine that sets the tone for success?

25 Sep 201538: Share Ross - Bass Player for Vixen, Author, and RocknRoll Life Coach01:00:41

Jen chats with Share Ross, bass player from Vixen, knitting book author, and rocknroll life coach about her journey.

When you think of a rockstar from the decadent and wildly amoral 80's the last thing you'd expect is an outrageously positive personality. Share Ross loves to give you the unexpected. As The Rock N Roll Life Coach, she inspires her clients to take quantum leaps in their lives and businesses while still playing gigs to thousands of rock fans.

Best known as the bassist in platinum-selling all-female 80's rock band Vixen she plays dates all over the globe with Ozzy Osbourne, KISS, Bon Jovi, Deep Purple, The Scorpions and more. Share also plays bass for Joe Elliott's (singer for Def Leppard) side project, The Down n Outz.

She surprised rock fans when she took up knitting and 2 years later published a knitting book, Punk Knits with a major publisher.

Share believes in creating your own luck. She never let 2 bankruptcies, divorce or a myriad of unsuccessful business ideas stop her. She's a walking testament that you gotta live in the now and let your inner rockstar guide you towards your true path.

Adventure and creativity are her life force and guiding light.

16 Nov 201660: AG - Lessons for Music Production and Life00:18:37

I chat with music producer AG about her approach to music production, as well as overcoming some of the issues we face as women in any industry.

AG is a triple threat She has been producing, songwriting and engineering music since the age of 15. After graduating from Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA, AG relocated to Los Angeles and began to make her mark as one of the few female producers in the industry. Her unique blend of diverse musical influences include M83, Peter Gabriel and PJ Harvey, has led to extensive network TV exposure, popular television commercials, and feature films.

Most recently, AG produced Ciara’s cover of the Rolling Stones’ “Paint It Black” for Lionsgate’s new vampire killer movie The Last Witch Hunter. Rolling Stone Magazine describes the song as, “a syrupy, mesmerizing slow-burner.”

AG’s music has been featured in countless TV shows and feature films including Pretty Little Liars, The Leftovers, Grey’s Anatomy, and Gossip Girl.

To learn more about AG, visit her website byaginc.com.

My biggest takeaways from this conversation were not so much about making music as they were about some of the universal challenges that we face as women.

Things like feeling like you need to be overqualified for a job before you actually think you can do it. We talk specifically about how she conquered that BS that we tell ourselves.

09 Feb 201645: Jenn Cristy00:56:22

Jenn Cristy and I chat about what she learned from touring and recording with John Mellencamp, building a successful music career in the Midwest, and starting 1Pulse Entertainment. Now on her fifth album, Jenn began her career with John Mellencamp, meeting the Hoosier rocker in Bloomington, Indiana, where she was in the midst of an all-American swimming career at Indiana University. During her stint with Mellencamp’s band she proved her versatility, playing flute, piano, percussion, organ, and violin in addition to singing. When she embarked on her solo career in 2003, she wanted to create a sound that both honored all of her varied influences – from Ben Folds to Pink and Bruce Hornsby to Queen – while creating something decidedly original. It is clear that her music has found a hungry audience. Cristy has played around the country, sharing the stage with a veritable who's-who of artists – Shawn Mullins, John Eddie, Antigone Rising, Indigenous, Bree Sharp, Jeffery Gaines, Danielia Cotton and Michael Gabliki (Rusted Root) –or dominating it herself. Her songs have earned praise everywhere from blogs and small-town newspapers to The New York Times. The piano-driven rock is a platform for lyrics that encompass everything from matters of the heart to politics to straight-ahead fun…or murder. In Cristy’s world, every story has a melody.

26 Oct 201657: Charlotte Martin00:47:43

This week I’m chatting with Charlotte Martin. Charlotte is celebrating the 10 year anniversary of the release of her record Stromata.

Over the course of her career, Charlotte Martin has recorded both major label and independent releases, performed sold-out shows to audiences around the world and shared stages with the likes of Liz Phair, Pete Yorn, Damien Rice, Jason Mraz, and many others. Her music has been licensed for a plethora of television shows, including “So You Think You Can Dance,” which regularly features her song “The Dance” during the show’s open. Details magazine called her “a seductive performer” and “a skilled lyricist who writes with surgical precision” and Performing Songwriter praised Martin as “a born storyteller and affecting vocalist.”

In addition to taking a deep dive into discussing some of the tracks on the record, this conversation is full of lessons and insight about navigating a career in music business. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not all rainbows and unicorns after you sign a record deal.
