21 Apr 2016Jill Ozovek - What's your professional narrative00:39:14

Jill Ozovek, is the founder of Jill Ozovek Career Coaching.

As a career coach, Jill partners with millennial and mid-career women to help them find and develop careers that align with their passions.

But this wasn’t always the case.

The first part of Jill’s career was spent as a corporate employee where by the age of 26 she had been promoted to head of a division, with a multi-million dollar budget.

As you would expect from a position like this, it came with high responsibilities and equally high expectations.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on how you look at it, it was those expectations that challenged Jill’s values and eventually led her to make a life-changing decision one evening after she caught a glimpse of her reflection in the window of a subway car.

JILL OZOVEK’S CAREER JOURNEY

Like the rest of us, Jill started her career as a corporate employee and steadily worked her way up the career ladder.

Shortly after the financial crisis of 2008, Jill found herself in charge of the strategy and team for a business with a $13M annual budget.

This is where Jill got her initial exposure to career development with her direct reports. Unfortunately, this was only a small portion of her overall job.

As you can imagine with a job like this the responsibilities and expectations were as big as the role and over time they began to wear on Jill.

Through a culmination of events, including leaving her house to go to work in her slippers, Jill knew it was time for a change when one day she saw a reflection of herself in the window of a subway car.

Rather than continue, Jill decided then and there it was time for her to let go and change her position in life.

JILL OZOVEK’S 30 DAY CAREER CHANGE BOOTCAMP

Jill launched the 30-day career change boot camp in 2015. The course is designed more for the DIY’er. She provides all of the exercises and worksheets she uses with her one-on-one clients.
The course takes you through Jill’s career change process in 5 phases.

  1. Reflection Phase
  2. Dreaming Phase
  3. Explore Phase
  4. Narrative Phase
  5. Job Search Strategy Phase

The goal of the boot camp is to provide you with everything you need to put in place your plan for your career change.

19 Jul 20163 Reasons to Attend Conferences - BYOB2500:07:45

I’m in Omaha, Nebraska this week to attend the very first Clifton Strengths Summit. The Summit is being hosted by Gallup, the company that brings you, StrengthsFinder.

So for the next two days, I’m going to be hanging with fellow Strengths enthusiasts and geeking out about our Strengths.

As I was flying here today, I started thinking about my objectives for the conference. And yes, you should have objectives or goals of some type when you attend a conference.

You may recall Madalyn Sklar gave us some great reasons why you need objectives when attending conferences. If you don’t remember, head on back into the archives and check it out.

For the next three days, I have identified three objectives I want to meet while I’m here and I thought I would share them with you on today’s show.

OH, in case you are wondering, I’m recording this from my hotel room using my iPhone which is why the audio is not quite up to my normal standards.

And while it would have been easy for me to just skip this show this week, considering I’m at the conference and my main computer died on me, I thought doing it this way would serve as a great reminder that you really don't need any fancy equipment to produce content.

You CAN make due with what you have.

Which is exactly what I’m doing with today’s show.  So here you go, my 3 reasons why you should attend conferences.

With the DICE framework, attending conferences falls into the "E" or the Engage step. But you probably already guessed that didn’t you.

Before I started this journey, I never went to a conference that wasn’t directly related to my day job.  In fact, I had never paid to go to a conference myself.

Now I go to at least two a year.

Conferences are just a great way to force yourself to get out there and push the boundaries of your comfort zone.

If it’s true that growth takes place just outside of our comfort zone, then I think we all need to be uncomfortable at times in to stimulate our grow both personally and professionally.

Conferences can do both in spades.

11 Aug 2016Melissa Llarena - How to prepare for a job interview00:44:27

Melissa Llarena is the president of Career Outcomes Matter, where she coaches top executives how to prepare for a job interview.

Melissa is an employee transition expert, interview specialist, career coach and blogger. Her articles have been featured in Forbes, The Wall Street Journal and The Huffington Post just to name a few.

She is the author of the eBooks The Mommy shift: A reentry strategy, The guide for landing a global assignment and the ebook we will discuss today How to get back in the driver seat Become the strongest job candidate.

MELISSA LLARENA’S CAREER JOURNEY

Melissa started her career in careers after soon earning a full-ride scholarship from Chase Bank to attend NYU. At the time, Chase, now J.P. Morgan Chase, offered many different professional development programs to participants in their scholarship program.

As a result, Melissa was exposed to many career-related workshops such as how to write an effective resume and how to interview more effectively. Because she attended these courses, she was always surrounded by high-level senior executives.

The combination of exposure to these executives and the workshops provided Melissa with the opportunity to apply what she was learning with her peers for free.

This eventually led Melissa to turn her “pro-bono” work into a full-time business helping senior leaders or corporate Olympians as she refers to them, prepare for job interviews.

THE 90 DAY PLAN

Melissa recommends going into the interview with a 90-day plan. The plan is both for you and the employer. You develop the plan as you prepare for the interview.

The 90-day plan you develop could very well be the plan you follow in your first 90-days in the role. The plan is derived from your research and forces you to scale up your knowledge of the company, the role, the competitors, the skills required, and how you meet or exceed all of them.

The plan gives you a good sense of how you would approach this new role if you were to be hired. In addition, it once again allows the employer to see you in the role as well.

When developing your plan Melissa recommends starting with the job description and using it as a skeleton to draft your plan. Look for “themes” within the job description.

As an example, one theme might be you in the role of leader with five direct reports. In this case, as yourself what will you do with those reports in the first 30, 60, and 90 days.

Will you review their current projects, will you attend their meetings, will you travel with them to a customer location?

If the role is cross functional, how do you plan to interact with your peers over the 90-day period? List out the activities you intend to complete.

The 90-day plan will show you’ve given serious thought to the role and that you’re able to hit the ground running.

I think the 90-day plan framework might just be the best way to prepare for a job interview.

Just as he promises on his podcast Brendan provides us with some serious inspiration, motivation and actionable advice in today’s show.

Brendan, Welcome to the show.

BRENDAN’S STORY

We all have the same 24 hours in a day it’s what we choose to do with our time that matters. If you were to conduct a time audit of how you spend your time, what would you discover?

To his time “in check”, Brendan has a two sticky notes on his computer. One reads,“ No news feed” meaning stay off Facebook. The other is a little more personal and reads, “Wasting time online is wasting time with your son and wife”. This one hits me maybe as hard as it hits Brendan. I’ll just let you marinade on that for a minute.

In the intro I mentioned that Brendan is still a full-time teacher. We discuss the most difficult part of being a teacher. Hint: It’s not what you think.

Having not gone to school to become a business owner, Brendan and I talk about how to gain the skills you need to be successful. We also walk through the 3 stages of blogging and Brendan’s Ah ha moment when he moved from stage 2 to stage 3.

Critical to his business success, Brendan and I discuss the difference between mentors and heroes. Mentorship is a big ask and a lot more of a

26 Nov 2015Gratitude and the Abundance Mindset00:11:14

Welcome to the 51st episode of The BRAND New You show THE podcast dedicated to helping you OWN your BRAND.

Each week we meet here to learn how you can use today’s technology to own your career, grow your influence and build your personal brand.

In honor of Thanksgiving here in the United States, today's show is about Gratitude, specifically the differences between a scarcity mindset and an abundance mindset.

THE SCARCITY MINDSET

A lot of people I talk to about owning their brand always seem to have an excuse, or I guess it’s a reason in their mind, why they think they can’t do something or why they don’t believe personal branding is a real thing.

Most of the time, these folks exhibit what I would say is a deeply engrained Scarcity mindset.

Unfortunately for them and for us, they tend to see life as having only so much, and there's not enough to go around. Using the analogy from my discussion with Jared Easley, it might help you think of the scarcity mindset as a pie.

The scarcity mindset tells us there is only one pie in existence. Therefore, if someone were to take a big piece of the pie, it would mean there is less available for everybody else.

In this way, people exhibiting a scarcity mindset often have a difficult time sharing recognition and credit and being genuinely happy for the success of other people. When they see someone taking what they feel is their piece of pie, they become very self-centered and will do anything they can to keep you from getting a piece of pie.

Sadly this is the mindset that exists in many corporate cultures and I'm guessing this reminds you of someone you know?

The truth is, I think under certain circumstances we all can develop a scarcity mindset.

For example, do you ever take things too seriously?

Have you ever thought that if you tried something new and failed, the sky might fall so to speak?

Have you ever been concerned about what others might think about you if you do that thing you've always wanted to do, whatever the thing might be?

Do you compare yourself to others?

Do you want to write a book but as soon as you put the pen to paper you think, why should I write this book - there’s already a book on that topic.

These are all symptoms of your scarcity mindset at work and this mindset is holding you back.

When you think this way, you invite failure in into your life because your negativity becomes an obstacle on your path to success.

The scarcity mindset keeps you where you are in your life and in your work.

But, if you’re going to create a BRAND New You, you need to OWN your BRAND by moving away from the scarcity mindset and embracing the abundance mindset.

THE ABUNDANCE MINDSET

To see life through the lens of abundance takes a conscious effort on your part especially in the beginning.

The abundance mindset comes from a sense of personal worth and security. It comes from owning your brand.

When you reach this point, you are no longer concerned about what others might think, you’re not concerned about the sky falling or that someone else already wrote a book on the same topic.

Getting to this point requires a paradigm shift on your part. You have to see that the pie is no longer limited.

There is enough pie to go around.

This is an important point so repeat after me: There is plenty for everyone. Say the sentence often enough, it’ll become second nature and you’ll be well on your way to an abundance mindset.

The abundance mindset will enable you to own your career, grow your authority and build your brand.

FIVE STEPS TO GAINING AN ABUNDANCE MINDSET

1 - Focus on abundance, not lack.

2 - Appreciation what you have.

3 - Choose to see opportunity.

4 - Carefully select the company you kee

08 Nov 2018Using assessments to define your brand with Sean Scoffield00:43:13

Today’s guest on the BRAND New Your Show is Sean Scoffield.

Sean reached out to me on LinkedIn after listening to a few of my older podcasts.

We exchanged a few messages and shared a couple of files when I realized he had a unique take on the power of personality assessments such as StrengthsFinder, Stand Out, and the Fascination Advantage.

Specifically, he has developed a method to pull together the results from all of the assessments into one comprehensive document that as he says creates a “tapestry” of your brand.

10 May 2016Repurpose Your Content - BYOB1500:18:47

Time is an interesting thing. It’s the only real constant in the universe. We each get 168 hours every week. The math is easy but what we do with those hours sometimes is not.

That’s why if you’re going to stand out in your career, you need to be productive during those limited hours. You need to learn how to repurpose your content.

Building on last weeks theme of the content pyramid, today I’m going to talk about something that will amplify your content production.

Repurposing.

Repurposing is simply the act of using the content you produce in a different medium and on a different platform. It’s also the single best way to get more done in a shorter period of time.

It’s like gaining extra hours in a day. Let me explain.

28 Jun 2016The StandOut Assessment - BYOB2200:17:59

It's Discover month here on the BRAND New You show.  This month I’m taking a deep dive look into how you can become more self-aware during the Discover step of DICE.

In today’s show I’ll be covering the third and final assessment I recommend to help you more self-aware.

So today I’ll be talking about an assessment I originally took about 3 years ago and it still stands out to me as one of the best.

I’m talking about the StandOut assessment by Marcus Buckingham.

Understanding what you are naturally good at is critical for you professionally.  By engaging in work that requires you to call on your strengths, you will increase your focus and enhance your performance.

Discovering your personal brand starts with an understanding your strengths and your inner talents.  This is a key step in discovering who you are as a person and what you are good at doing.

We’ve all experienced days where when we reach the end of the day, we’ve said out loud, “Wow. Today flew by”.  Odds are on those days, you were working in your strengths.

Those are the days when you StandOut.  Wouldn’t it be nice if those days happened more often?

It can if you understand what makes you StandOut.

Danny is an author, a podcaster, and location-independent entrepreneur originally from San Diego, California.

He is the founder of Open World magazine and the Open World podcast, where he interviews the world’s most exciting adventurers and location-independent entrepreneurs.

Danny has traveled to over 30 countries on four continents and during his travels He has crossed half of Southeast Asia on a motorcycle.

He’s rafted down the Amazon and climbed the tallest mountains of South America. He’s rappelled off waterfalls in the jungle and sailed across the South China Sea.

He’s even tangoed in Buenos Aires and fought Thai boxing matches in Bangkok.

Danny believes that we should live life on our own terms without the outside pressure from others.

To this end, his book, “Buy your own Island is a playbook designed to help individuals find the love, adventure, passion and purpose they seek.

Help me welcome Danny Flood to the brand new you show.

BUY YOUR OWN ISLAND - THE ULTIMATE GUIDE TO BREAKING FREE AND MAKING YOUR DREAMS A REALITY

Buy your own Island is not a book on how to buy an island. Rather, it’s a highly actionable and motivational book which I consider to be a great mix of two of my favorite books, Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill and The 4-hour Work Week by Tim Ferriss.

This book provides the reader with an MBA in location independent lifestyle.

During our discussion, Danny Flood dispels the notion that location-independence is just for “certain types” of individuals. It really can be something we all enjoy if we have the right mindset.

Because he has “been there done that” Danny understands more than anyone the games your mind will play with you to keep you in your comfort zone.

Danny spends a good deal of time in the first section of the book walking the reader through exercises to help the reader overcome their own fears and self-doubt.

ALIBI-ITIS

We all suffer from an affliction known as alibi-itis, our secret excuses that keep us from getting what we want from life. These excuses act to postpone action and defer the things we really want out into the future.

To overcome alibi-itis help Danny Flood recommends taking small steps out of your comfort zone by “leaning in” to the edge of your comfort zone.

HACK UPWORK - HOW TO MAKE REAL MONEY AS A FREELANCER

In Hack UpWork Danny Flood takes all of his experiences using UpWork, an online staffing website for freelancers and clients developed to connect companies with talent, and boils them down into an actionable strategy you can follow to make the most of the system for freelance work.

Companies post project based jobs and registered freelancers in areas such as web development, writers, sales, marketing and accountants review the job postings and bid on the o

05 Nov 2015Marc Miller - Career Pivot and Personal Branding00:39:07

Today we welcome to the BRAND New You show Marc Miller founder of career pivot.com.

Career Pivot was selected as one of the top 100 career websites and has been featured on Forbes.com, CBS money watch, and US News and World report.

Marc is a career design specialist who helps baby boomers design a strategy of manageable pivots in order to help them move towards a career they can grow with and be fulfilled with for decades.

No stranger to career pivots himself, Marc has personally made 6 of them including stints at IBM, two successful start-ups in Austin TX, teaching math in an inner-city high school and even working for a local non-profit.

He is the author of Repurpose your career - A practical guide for Baby boomers. In the book, Marc provides a roadmap for boomers who are looking to find a career they can grow into and that meets their needs.

In His latest book which is called Personal Branding for baby boomers - Marc answers personal branding questions such as What is it, how to manage it and why it’s no longer an option.

CAREER PIVOT AND PERSONAL BRANDING FOR BABY BOOMERS

Marc looks at personal branding as being able to tell your story in an authentic way.  Not so long ago your personal brand was limited to your reputation within the “four walls" of the corporate office.

Today however with the internet and social media we compete with people from all over the world for the same positions. In these cases getting the next position or promotion comes down to your ability to help people answer this question:

“How do I know that you know your stuff?”

Some people see personal branding or telling your own story as self-promotion.  These folks were not raised to be self-promoters. Marc and I talk about a very simple philosophy he uses with his clients to get past this mental barrier.

Key Elements to building your Brand Story

1 - Strong Opening

2 - Memorable label

3 - Brand theme

While each of these micro mavens (Chris Borgan, Gary Vaynerchuck, and Darren Rowse for example) were operating in very different and distinct niches, Trevor noticed during his research seven characteristics that each one shared.

While the micro mavens he researched had been engaged in each of the seven characteristics for quite some time, Trevor did point out that it is possible for each one of us to become a micro maven.

But to do that, to reach that level of success we need to adhere to each the seven characteristics outlined below.

The 7 characteristics of a Micro Maven

1 - Power of Authenticity

In addition to everything else we’ve reviewed and assessed so far there is one more aspect of our personal brands we need to explore before we can start to relate the Discover step to our career and what we want to be known for.

We need to know our skills and our traits.

21 Jun 2016Fascination Advantage Assessment - BYOB2100:13:34

Welcome to Discover month here on the brand new you show.  This month I’m talking a deep dive look into how you can become more self-aware during the Discover step of DICE.

So to help I’m covering in detail the three assessments I have taken in order to help me become more self-aware and this week, I’m going to talk about one of my favorites.

The one I recommend everyone take.

To say that the Fascination Advantage® assessment is unique would be an understatement.

Asn an example, The SF assessment we discussed last week , is designed to help you look inside yourself and describe for you how you see the world.

The Fascination Advantage® assessment, however, flips this traditional approach on its head by giving you insights on how the world sees you.

It’s a subtle but key difference and it’s why I like this assessment so much.

If you’re interested in taking the assessment, head over to Ryanrhoten.com/FAA, yes like the airline industry.  I will get a small commission if you use that link, but it comes at no additional cost to you and using the link will ensure you take the correct assessment.

Anyway, let’s dive into the world of fascination and discover how you fascinate.

26 Apr 2016Overcoming Negative Search Results - BYOB1300:14:44

This past week a listener emailed me the following question about how to overcome negative search results.

“I have an arrest record that still flashes online. It was years ago, I’ve moved on and created a new life helping others but still even 10+ years later, the news article will surface. How do you combat news organizations who, with one article can effectively ruin years of work?"

First, thank you for your question, and second This is a tough position to be in for sure. The answer to the question is simple but fixing it will not easy and to be honest it’s not guaranteed to fix it forever. I’ll explain why as we go along.

At a high level, there are two parts to this puzzle.

One you can control. One you cannot.

HOW TO FIND JOB OPPORTUNITIES USING SOCIAL MEDIA

With employer branding and social recruiting defined, Audra and I moved on to the topic of finding jobs via social media. We covered multiple platforms including:

How to find jobs using LinkedIn

How to find jobs using Facebook

How to find jobs on Twitter

HOW TO RESEARCH A COMPANY’S CULTURE USING SOCIAL MEDIA

In today’s social world, there’s really no excuse for not understanding a company’s culture. In fact, it’s now possible for all parties, candidates and employers, to completely understand each other’s brand.

Job seekers can learn more about a company now than ever before. In the not to distant days past, job seekers were limited to what the employer wanted you to find. Today, because of social media, candidates have many places they can turn to discover what its like to work at a company.

Audra and I discuss several platforms for job seekers to review when assessing a company’s culture. We started our discussion with Instagram.

Determining company culture using Instagram

Determining company culture using LinkedIn

Determining company culture using Facebook

Determining company culture using Twitter

They are passionate about building engaging, persuasive and intelligent brand offerings that help their clients stand head and shoulders above their competition.

YOU ARE A BUSINESS OF ONE

While Arielle Careers started as a side business writing resumes, Steven and Irene clearly have their pulse on the personal branding space.

They understand and exemplify what Tom Peters first assured back in 1997, each of us is a business of one.  Arielle Careers will help you see yourself in this way.

Now before you say “I’ve got a good job, with a good company, and I’ve got nothing to worry” please go listen to show 23 with Richard Kirby so you can be reminded that those days are past.

Job security is being replaced with employment security. Embracing yourself as a business of one and treating yourself as such, as Steven says during our discussion, is the best way for you to ensure your future employment security

12 Jul 2016Tie your brand to your compensation - BYOB2400:15:30

Who do you think about when I say the science guy?

Can you name a Self-Help Guru?  Who comes to mind when I say Daily Vlog?

Did someone’s name immediately pop up in your mind? Why did you come up with their name?  Is it because you hear their name often?  Or is it because when you google a specific topic, their name surfaces to the top.

Maybe it’s because you follow them on social media, read their blog or their books.

Whatever the reason, I think you’ll agree their names came to you quickly because you regard them as an expert in whatever the topic or niche you follow.

Here’s another set of questions for you.

Who do you think about when I say, electrical engineer?  Don’t follow electrical engineers, no worries, let’s try CPAs or real estate agents.  No? How about human resources?

Do any names and/or faces come to your mind?

Let’s go deeper.

What if I said name a product manager, project manager, talent acquisition specialist, SEO specialist or recruiter?

I’m guessing you drew a blank for a few of those, didn’t you?  If you did that’s ok, maybe project management is not your thing.

However, when it comes to one specific topic you are personally passionate about, I bet you know who all of the “players” are in the space.

Chances are you’ve also noticed that the top individuals in this space seem to get all of the opportunities.  Whether it be speaking gigs, promotions, etc.

Why is that do you think?

Well, that’s exactly what I want to talk to you about on today’s show.

How your brand, specifically your digital brand, in the eyes of others can lead to additional opportunities and compensation for you.

31 May 2016Employability Score P2 - BYOB1800:15:12

Last week, I introduced the concept of the employability score.  A score that would be used by employers to rank you against other job candidates.

This score would be created by algorithms based solely on predetermined criteria about you found on the web.

The show struck a chord with several of you listening so I wanted to expand on the concept of an employability score further today, because whether we get to the point of having an employability score or not, I want you to start thinking about how your brand impacts your compensation.

Richard Kirby Interview Highlights

ATTITUDE AND EMPLOYMENT SECURITY

Richards starts his book by discussing the important of attitude not just in your job search but in your life. Your attitude is always on display for everyone to see even in places that never occurred to you to look.

When was the last time you checked the message you left on your voicemail? Richard tells you why you need to check it and maybe update it.

To say there has been a shift in employment over the last few years would be a huge understatement. We used to think about job security now we need to consider employment security.

Employment security is all about you becoming the CEO of You, Inc. You need to be vigilant about the changing career landscape and required skills in order to develop transferable skills and knowledge that other employers will want and need.

Employment security keeps you relevant and will help you weather the economic storms that will happen throughout your career.

We discuss job hopping and I ask Richard how long is too long to stay with one employer. You can either hand around in abad situation and wait for something to happen to you or you can be more proactive and look for an opportunity elsewhere.

If you subscribe to employment security over job security you’ll know when it’s time to go.

CAREER PLANNING STARTS WITHIN

If you’re struggling with answering the question “what do I want to do with my life” it’s probably because you’re fixated on a job title rather than where you can add the most value.

To help you understand what you are naturally wired to do, Richard discusses different assessments all designed to help you assess your Behaviors, your skills, your interest and motivations.

Todd Lohenry | Online Reputation | Thought Leadership

Show Notes: http://ryanrhoten.com/toddstips

On today’s show I welcome back to the show Todd Lohenry from toddlohenry.com.

Todd’s first appearance on the podcast where we discussed thought leadership and online reputation management at a strategic level can be found HERE.

A thought leader himself , Todd’s passion is helping thinkers become thought leaders in their own right using a process he calls the elevation workflow.

When Todd was last on we walked through each of the nine steps in his elevation workflow at a higher more strategic level

This time we’re going to dive a little deeper and talk about the tools and apps Todd uses to help facilitate and execute the elevation workflow process.

Contemplate

Consider your avatar and how you can be in strategic alignment with your audience. This will help you speak their language and meet their expectations.

Tools to help determine your avatar’s language: Google search, Google Trends, and Google Adwords keyword planner. TIP: During a basic Google search scroll to the bottom of the page. There you will find additional more niche keywords and phrases suggested by Google.

Consume & Curate

The tools and applications used during the consume and curate steps can be the same. Todd uses them to divide content into four buckets; sites (website), searches (Google searches), sources (current thought leaders you follow) and someday maybe information.

Todd looks to RSS content readers to help both c

19 Nov 2015How to make a Podcast - Show #5000:41:06

The step-by-step process I use to make this podcast.

Hello and welcome to The BRAND New You show this is THE podcast dedicated to helping you thrive in the reputation economy.  We meet here every week to learn how you can Build your personal brand, grow your influence and ultimately Impact your career.

Today I’m super excited.  Why is that you ask? Well, today is episode #50.  I can hardly believe it myself.  Especially considering 14 months ago all I had was an idea.

There are a lot of people to thank for helping me get to this point, but I’ll start with the Stars of this podcast, my guests.  All of my guests have been so gracious and it's humbling to me they were so willing to share their time with us.  After all time is our most precious asset.

I also have you the listeners to thank for clicking the subscribe button and tuning in each week.  It’s your 5-star rating and reviews on iTunes, your tweets and emails that keep me motivated and inspired to keep going.

It’s because of you we’ve hit show #50.

Now a lot of podcasts when they hit show 50 or other milestones, like to do a top 10 list of things they've learned along the way.  And to be honest, I was planning to do the exact same thing.

But, I went back and reviewed the list of topics from my email subscribers.  Items one and two we covered with the show on Master Minds and last week’s show on Twitter.

Believe it or not, number three on the list was “How do you make a podcast”.

So I thought it about and decided instead of doing a top 10 list of lessons learned, I'm going to use this podcast to teach you everything you need to know about starting your own podcast.

10 Apr 2017CareerKred Book Launch Day!00:07:01

Hello and welcome to a very special Monday edition of the BRAND New You show or as I like to call it launch day.

Since I spent on last week’s regular show explaining the principles behind the book, CareerKred, I won’t do that again today.

Instead, today’s show is about gratitude.

Because the book could not have been written without the guests on this show sharing their wisdom and of course without you listening in each week giving me the motivation and inspiration to continue.

As I reflect back on writing the book I realize that no good work can be done in a vacuum and that all great works come via teamwork.

So thank you for listening each and head on over to Amazon to pick up a copy of the newly released book, CareerKred - 4 simple steps to build your digital brand and boost credibility in your career.

23 Apr 2015Dorie Clark - Author Stand Out00:26:22

Dorie Clark | Stand Out | Personal Branding

Show Notes: HERE

Today we welcome back to the show Dorie Clark author of the just released book

Stand Out: How to find your breakthrough idea and build a following around it.

For those of you who are traveling along the journey with me to create a BRAND new you, it really is required reading.

In Stand Out, Dorie provides us with the roadmap we need to take our personal brands to the next level.

To that place, where we can all become the Google of our niche as I discussed in episode 16 of this podcast; Building your personal brand online.

Speaking of building your brand online, I’ve developed an online brand assessment that will help you understand whether or not you Stand Out online.

The assessment is free and when you’re finished you’ll be given a score and a link that will explain your score and how well you stand out online. The best part? You can do all of this from your phone.

Head on over to mypersonalbrand.rocks, sign up and take the assessment. When you finish send me tweet @RyanRhoten let me know your score and how well you stand out online.

Stand Out: How to find your breakthrough idea and build a following around it.

Standing out is no longer optional. And with the release of Dorie’s book any excuses you may have about “not knowing how to get started” have been erased.

  • How many of you listening to this right now are driving to a job that doesn’t fullfill you?
  • How many of you listening feel stuck either in life or in your career?
  • How many of you listening feel, deep down inside, that you are meant for something bigger, something better?
  • If you answered yes to any of these questions, I have one additional question for you: Why?

Why are you choosing this direction for yourself, when you know you were made to be so much more.

Speaking of choosing your direction I’m reminded of yet another quote from Dr. Seuss:

She embodies a lot of the qualities we’ve discussed since the start of this podcast. Becoming a brand new version of yourself takes courage, perseverance and a lot of hard work on your part.

This is especially true if the new version you see for yourself is to become an entrepreneur.

In the news, we always hear about the widely successful entrepreneur’s and all the money they’ve just made because they sold their business or their product is now the hottest thing on the planet.

When this happens the news reports almost always make us think the entrepreneur is an overnight success.

We all know, or at least, I hope the listeners to this podcast know, that there’s no such thing as an overnight success. In the words of Dwayne Johnson, also known as The Rock, it takes blood, sweat, and respect. The first two you give, the last one you earn.

Yet many people still think to themselves when they see a news clip about an entrepreneur who has made it big, “man are they lucky” or maybe even, “I could’ve done that.”

But the truth is we didn’t. We didn’t because, unlike the entrepreneur whose name is now all over the news, we decided not to take action.

Taking action is one of the core tenants of becoming a brand new you. Why do we choose to not take action? Simply put because action requires change and change is hard, especially if that change involves you taking the entrepreneurial path.

Nelson Mandela once said,

“Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”

Lisa has fallen down more than once but she got back up again and again and somehow managed to continue moving forward.

And while Today, Lisa is a certified body language trainer and non-verbal skills expert, this wasn’t always the case. In fact, Lisa’s story is very typical for many entrepreneurs and her story offers so many great lessons for us all.

These lessons can be applied in our quest to becoming a brand new version of ourselves but as I've already said they don’t come easy or without a struggle.

A quick note of thanks goes out to Jonathon Perrelli. Jonathon is the founder of Startupland.TV and he approved the use of the audio snippets you’ll hear on this show. You’ll learn more about Startupland later in the podcast, but for now, if you want to learn more head over to Startupland.TV.
21 Dec 2014What are Transferable Skills?00:18:22

Transferable Skills | Job Descriptions | Career advice

In today's show we discuss two important topics:  Transferable Skills and Mid-life Transitions

Many of us get to a point where we begin to question our position in life.  We ask questions like:

"Is this all there is?"

"How can I make an equivalent living doing something else?"

These are big questions that in our younger selves would not be able to answer.  Mid-life transitions are important decision points in our lives we can either Accept and Stay or Reframe and Transition.

If we reframe and transition we can begin to answer these tough questions.

And frankly we already know the answer to these questions but getting to the answer requires effort and an understanding of our transferable skills.

Once you can identify your transferable skills, you can unlock your potential and begin to move your life and career in the direction you want to go.

Are you ready to discover your transferable skills?  Then Let's go!

25 Apr 2018Dorie Clark - Entrepreneurial You00:50:43

Not everyone listening to this podcast wants to become an entrepreneur in the truest sense of the word. I get that but here’s the thing, many people who eventually become entrepreneurs didn’t set out to obtain that moniker. It happened naturally over time.

You may think that Doire’s book, Entrepreneurial You, is espousing this route. Go be an entrepreneur and if you think that after listening to the podcast, I’m afraid you’ve missed the point.

Entrepreneurial You is really more about kick-starting your journey. Getting you to take small steps, to dip your toes into the water, to fiddle around with different things so you can find something that sticks.

And when you do find that something, whatever it may be, use her book as a guide to see if you can turn it into something you can get paid for.

While I loved all of Dorie's actionable tips scattered throughout the book, To me, the most important aspect of entrepreneurial you is this notion of preparation. Preparing for things in life you don’t expect because you never know what the future may hold.

What seems secure to you today may not be so secure tomorrow and that salary you hold so dear, the salary that frankly stops you from moving forward and pursuing something you’re passionate about, well, here’s a reality check for you.

It can disappear literally overnight.

Think about that for a minute. What would you do if tomorrow you were called into your bosses office and the HR manager is there to let you know your position has been eliminated?

In today’s age of corporate consolidation and the coming age of AI and blockchain, this is a very real scenario. Some of you listening may have already experienced this.

So I ask you, what would you do if tomorrow your salary went to zero? What is your backup plan and keep in mind, get another job, isn’t really a backup plan when the mortgage is still due.

As Dorie mentioned, pursuing something on the side is a great way to mitigate risk, provide you with skills, additional income and can ultimately make you less dependant on the day job.

On the flip side, A side hustle may also make you more valuable in the day job, assuming of course if your company values the new skills you've acquired.

So I’ll close out today’s show by asking the question Dorie asks at the end of her book.

What are you working for?

If your answer is the next paycheck, then it might be time for you to consider alternatives, to pursue a passion, to take small steps towards discovering your Entrepreneurial You.

Taking those first steps is not easy, but I promise with each step you take, you will learn and move forward as long as your willing to give up the ghost of what you imagined your career would be, so can finally grasp what your career could be.

Don’t forget to pick up a copy of Dorie’s book, Entrepreneurial You and while you’re clicking things on the screen I’d appreciate it if you added in a copy of my book, CareerKred into your cart as well.

That’s wraps us up for today. Until next time. I’ve been Ryan and I’m out.

08 Oct 2015Katrina Collier - Social recruiting and employer branding00:48:56

Katrina Collier | Social Recruiting | Employer Branding

Show Notes: http://ryanrhoten.com/katrinacollier

Today I welcome to the BRAND New You show Katrina Collier from WinningImpression.com

With knowledge gained from over a decade of in-house and third-party recruitment, Katrina teaches companies to use social media to gain access to their candidates directly on many social channels, such as LinkedIn, Google+, Facebook, and Twitter.

She has been recognized as a thought leader by social recruiting solution Work4 and is one of The 100 Most Influential People in HR & Recruiting on Twitter.

Katrina was named one of The Top 15 Recruitment Experts to follow on Twitter by Bond US and she has been quoted in The HR Review, Society for Human Resource Management, The Staffing Stream, and Cambridge University’s Strategies for Success.

Katrina completely understands what companies are looking for when trying to attract the best talent which means for the active job seeker or for even those of you who are passively looking, Katrina knows how to connect companies with candidates in this social recruiting age.

WHAT IS SOCIAL RECRUITING?

Social recruiting is a real thing. It’s not a fad or a buzzword. It’s quickly becoming the way top companies recruit talent.

Katrina defines social recruiting as simply using social media channels to recruit. However, it doesn’t replace the more traditional methods of recruiting.

If used correctly social recruiting will compliment a company’s recruiting process. However to implement it successfully within a company, employers must develop a strategy to find, engage and connect with candidates directly on social media.

HOW JOB SEEKERS CAN ENGAGE IN SOCIAL RECRUITING

Most recruiters will start their search for you on LinkedIn which has become the default starting place for recruiters.

However it's important to point out recruiters will use Google to search for you as well. The more savvy social recruiters will even look to the larger social sites such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram , Bechance, GitHub, StackOverflow, etc.

So what does this mean? You must have a good online reputation.  Always remember this:

“Think through what you post. Ask yourself if you would you share it with your grandmother.”

If the answer to this question is no, then don’t post it.  The one time you post something objectionable that's the time a recruiter will be looking for you.

Good social recruiters will search social sites that align with requirements of the position.  As a candidate your job is to know which social sites you should be on, create a profile and starting sharing content.

17 May 2016The Social Resume - BYOB1600:16:33

What if in the not so distant future, let’s say within 5 years, resumes became obsolete? I know that’s sounds like blasphemy to some of you but I believe we are quickly approaching a point where the traditional tools of recruitment, resume and cover letters, for example, will be replaced with more real and telling technologies like the social resume.

What if…The resume no longer existed and cover letters…well nobody really those now anyway of they?

Play along with me here and ask yourself, if the resume is gone, how would you demonstrate to potential employers or clients your skills, expertise and the value you add?

In this scenario, which frankly I don’t think is as far-fetched as you might think, your career and your livelihood may all come down to two things:

1 - How visible you are online

2 - Your social resume

12 Nov 2015How to use Twitter the right way00:39:55

Show notes: http://www.ryanrhoten.com/how-to-twitter/

Welcome to the BRAND New You show. On today's show, I talk about what I believe is the most important tool you can use to build your brand, grow your influence, expand your network, connect with hiring managers, and ultimately impact your career.

You may remember from show forty-six about masterminds. I had asked my e-mail subscribers to submit suggestions for topics to cover or people to interview for the show.  Twitter was number two on the list.

If you've listened to the show for any length of time you know it's no secret that I love Twitter.  Which means I was going to do a show on Twitter sooner or later, but to be perfectly honest I was really leaning towards later. Why? Well, simply because Twitter is well-covered ground on this podcast.

Then I received an e-mail from a BNY listener named Dan.

Dan's e-mail said,

"Enjoying the podcast. What do you think is the best way to learn to really use Twitter?"

As I was responding to Dan, I thought about it. While we have discussed Twitter on this show several times through the eyes of many different guests, we haven't actually looked at Twitter through the eyes of all of them collectively.

So for this show, I've put together a mix tape if you will that combines the advice from several of my previous guests into this one cohesive show about how to really learn to use Twitter. Enjoy.

I want to send out a special word of thanks to my previous guests featured in today's show.  I personally learned so much from each and every one of you during our conversations about twitter that I knew as soon as I had the idea about putting this podcast together I had to call on each of you again for today's show.

I encourage all of you reading this to listen to the shows with Madalyn, Mark, Katrina, John, Hannah, David, and Maria.  If you thought the snippets from our earlier conversations were great wait until you hear everything they had to say during each of my discussions with them individually.

I HAVE A BRANDING QUESTION

In February last year, I wrote a review about a new personal brand landing page called branded.me. Along with the review, I posted a video showing how to set-up your branded.me page.

VIDEO

Since that time, the branded.me review drives a lot of traffic to my website as well as the majority of the comments on the site.

In February this year, almost exactly a year later, branded.me released a major platform upgrade and once again I created another video review.

This review is once again driving traffic and comments, but this time, I’m getting some pointed feedback like this comment from Randy who said:

“Nice article on (personal brand) landing pages. I don’t see them as very useful since they end up on page 2 or 3 of Google.”

Thanks for the feedback Randy.

As I have said on multiple occasions, both on the blog and on this podcast, I am firm believer that everyone should have their own website.

The technology has advanced to the point that you can literally have a website up and running in 5 minutes for less than $100.

Back to Randy’s comments. I told him overall, I tend to agree with him. However, I believe the benefit of your personal brand landing pages lies solely in how you implement and use it as a part of your overall personal branding strategy.

Find out what I mean in today's show.

PERSONAL BRANDING AND CLOTHES

Toi has a great quote that sums up how clothes really do make not only the man (woman) but also the brand.

“When you look good, you feel good, if you feel good then you are confident, if you are confident then world is yours”

Other topics we discuss include: colors, common fashion mistakes, and clothing delivery companies like Trunk Club and Bombfell.

Today I welcome to the show Sunny Bonnell the co-founder of Motto. Motto, is a comprehensive branding and design firm that helps visionary entrepreneurs and companies build magnetic brands.

At Motto, Sunny is a visionary thinker and branding expert who also serves as the creative director in addition to her co-founder duties.

Sunny was named one of Graphic Design - USA’s “25 Creatives to Watch in 2014” and has been featured on MSN Business, CBS News, American Express, and various print and online design publications.

She thrives on inspiring others to pursue their passions and pushes both herself and her clients to reach beyond their threshold to achieve success.

Please welcome Sunny to the brand new you show.

PERSONAL BRANDS AND BRANDING

At Motto, Sunny views branding as something much bigger than a design. It’s really the deliberate effort you make to tell the world this is who I am.

Branding is the process of defining shaping and influencing both visually and verbally the story, the emotion and the meaning you want your audience to experience.

Where Sunny sees her clients struggle the most is internally with the foundational "things" required to build a brand such as; defining their meaning, purpose, vision, values in a way that makes it easier to articulate them to the world.

Comparing this to personal branding, I see and wrestle with many of the same things. Most people I speak with about personal branding don’t even take these internal things into consideration when building their brand.

Everyone wants to jump right into the more “sexy” stuff like building a website or designing a logo but without the focus tha

Becoming known for knowing something is the key to boosting your brand. Today’s guest, Wes Gay, knows this better than most.

He went from being laid off and working from his mother-in-law’s couch to running a successful StoryBrand certified agency in two years.

30 Jun 2016It's time to Reinvent Recruiting00:31:33

Welcome to moving month on the BRAND New You Show. This month I am doing something I have been talking about and really dreaming about for as long as I can remember.

I’m moving my family west to Colorado.

To say this move is a little stressful would be the understatement of the year.  It’s especially challenging for my high school aged boys, one of whom will be a freshman and the other a Senior.

But if there’s one thing I’ve learned through 100 plus episodes of this podcast it’s that change is good.  Change, or more specifically how we react to it, is what helps to shape us as humans.

For years, I’ve made excuses about why we couldn’t move west even though it’s been a lifelong dream.  This podcast and a tweet from Pat Flynn, helped me realize that my excuses were really just that, excuses.

So after much debate and many financial calculations, The Rhoten family is packing up and leaving the Hoosier state after 16 years.

I’m telling you this because during this month, as you might imagine, I’ll be doing lots of moving type activities such as packing, loading and unloading trucks, picking up apartment keys, registering the boys in their new school, and the list goes on and on.

So rather than try to squeeze in any new shows, which would not be fair to my guests, I decided to dig into the archives and breathe life back into some “oldies but goodies”.

It’s funny.  In the online world, they say if you’re not embarrassed by your first attempt at something, then you launched too late. I can honestly say, after listening to this one again, I promise you I did not start too late.

Exactly 100 shows ago, I hosted this podcast’s very first guest, Tim Saumier.  Tim and I had been working together and he graciously agreed to help this crazy podcaster wanna-be get started.

Tim, if you’re listening, thank you for having the courage be on a completely new podcast with a host who barely knew what he was doing.  Fortunately for me, you rescued the show with your top rate and evergreen advice on everything from recruiting, to the job search, to interviewing.

And for that I am grateful.

So without any further ado, let me introduce to you my very first guest and interview on the brand new you show, president and CEO of Tyges International, Tim Saumier.

Will Wegert is the founder and president of Cold Collar.

At Cold Collar, Will helps his clients tell their stories to potential employers in an accurate and compelling way through a combination of professional resume writing, LinkedIn profiles, and personal websites.

Will's core mission at Cold Collar is to help top-notch business professionals, find and capture the work they love.

PERSONAL BRANDING

Will’s big on personal branding, so of course, we were chat a little bit about it.  Will looks at personal branding as anything that represents who you are.  It represents your core message.

Posts to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, videos you like, dislike, etc. they all talk to who you are at your core.  They are pieces of the puzzle of you.

The things about personal branding that you need to understand is that it’s your brand that determines your fit in a company.  Your brand determines if you will attract or repel others.  From this viewpoint, it’s your brand that determines your compensation.

Thank about that for a minute.

In this digital-first world, you can and will attract companies to you or you will repel them away.  This means there will be opportunities, read as jobs, that you will be passed over for because you may not be the right cultural fit.

In this way, your brand determines your compensation.

10 Mar 2016Matt Inglot - Freelance Transformation00:44:13

Matt Inglot is the owner of Tilted Pixel and producer of the Freelance Transformation.

Tilted Pixel is a 9-year-old web agency Matt started while in college.

Freelance Transformation, is a podcast devoted to helping people in creative services TRANSFORM their business.

On Freelance Transformation, Matt helps fellow consultants and creative service providers earn more and build a business around their lifestyle, rather than the other way around.

MATT’S JOURNEY

Matt started out his career like so many of us do. He went to college and was on track to get that coveted “real world” job when he decided to take a part-time job doing marketing for a virtual reality company.

It was in this position where Matt’s outlook on work and life would change. This change started after he discovered one morning that his key card no longer worked to get him in the building.

Turns out, he, along with a third of the company, had been let go.

Fortunately for Matt, he was able to fall back on his website development skills and, as a result, Tilted Pixel was born.

HOW TO START FREELANCING / CONSULTING

Matt and I spent time talking to the listeners who may be interested in starting a consulting business or becoming a freelancer.

Matt has “been there, done that” so he understands the fear of the unknown, the problem with taking bad clients, and the feelings of not being to provide for your family.

He offers us 3 distinct ways you can overcome these fears including,

- Worse Case scenario
- Minimize the downside
- Do your homework

THE FREELANCE TRANSFORMATION PODCAST

Freelance Transformation is Matt’s podcast. It releases every Monday on iTunes and Stitcher and all the other pod catchers out there.

It’s a Monday staple for me. You can check out it HERE.

29 Mar 2016Blogging with no audience - BYOB900:11:00

Once you’ve started blogging people are going to ask, "Who’s your audience?”

You will hear this a lot, “Who is your audience?’ or “You need to write for your audience.”

Everywhere you look online someone has a tutorial, blog post or video promising to help you define your audience, develop your customer personas, speak your customer’s language, etc.

And I agree, you do need to understand who your audience is but I promise you taking a course to help you find your audience as you get started blogging, isn’t going to help you.

In fact, it might hurt.

You need to reach a certain level of competence with yourself and your craft before courses or memberships like these will be of any use to you.

Until then, these courses will only serve to confuse and frustrate you, which will cause you to delay or worse case, stop before you even get started.

Don’t let this be you.

Yes, you do need to have some idea of who you believe your ideal reader to be when you get started.

However, what is more, important and fundamental to your success initially, is the topic or subject matter you want to become known for.

As I’ve said before You need to be “excited” about your topic or area of expertise. You need to have a good baseline understanding of your topic.

This will make it easier for your ideas to flow from your head to your fingertips to the keyboard to the screen just to the left of the blinking cursor.

Being excited about your area of expertise will keep you going as you move along the path to building your own brand because the simple truth is, in the beginning, you will have no audience.

There will be no one paying attention for to ask what to write about or what problem you can help them solve.

Instead of having someone to lean on for topics or ask about their pain points, there will only be you, your ideas and your computer.

That’s why I believe it’s so important when starting out, not to write for an audience but to write for yourself instead.

22 Mar 20163 blogging ideas to get you started - BYOB800:13:37

If you’ve listened to this podcast for any length of time, you know I’m a huge proponent of having your own website.

In fact, I think it’s a must have today for any business professional. If you want to be taken seriously that is.

At the very least I recommend you own your domain meaning you go purchase your first name last name dot com.

Why? Because it’s important. You can listen to the BYOB episode on how to build your personal brand, for my specific reasons.

In the age of the Internet, a website is a critical tool for both businesses and individuals.

As an individual, a website allows you to control what people find about you online. In addition, it can serve as a one-stop-shop for all things YOU.

If used properly, it can also give you a leg up on your competition.

what’s interesting is The problem that most people have with starting a website is not so much the technical stuff,

which I can help with by the way,

but it’s really the “what” that they struggle with the most.

Chances are if you’re like the majority of people I speak with about starting a blog you are probably thinking to yourself right now,

“Ok. But what should I put on it?”

I get asked this question a lot. People want to know what they should blog about on their own website.

This might be the single biggest obstacle to getting started.

And like everything else in the DICE process, the answer to the WHAT is simple but it’s not easy.

If this is you rest assured I have some suggestions to get you started. So here are three high-level categories you can choose but ultimately what you decide to write about on your blog, should be aligned with Discover step and what you want to be known for.

Taylor Nieman | TalentPoolMe | Recruiting

Full show notes: HERE

Today we welcome to the show Taylor Nieman the Co-founder and CEO of TalentPoolMe.com

Talent pool me is a tech startup addressing the market gap for college recruiting and employer branding.

While not yet fully launched the platform is already gaining the attention of Fortune 500 companies, such as Geico, Mars Incorporated, and Siemens.

TalentPoolMe.com

Taylor and I discuss the online platform TalentPoolMe.com and how it links together all aspects of early career recruiting from Universities, to talent, and employers.

We also talk about employer branding, what it is and how it compares to the “traditional corporation”.

Talentpoolme is not a job board.  It will operate as a true talent pool for the employers and talent who sign up for the platform.

Talent will be able to opt-in to an employer’s talent pool as well as share their experiences with specific employers that will directly link back to the employer’s profile.

Employers on the other hand will get to watch the development of the talent throughout their college career via their internships, projects or other extracurricular activities.

Taylor and her team at TalentPoolMe.com have created a win-win platform that will benefit both employers and talent for many years to come.

04 Aug 2016The Benefits of Career Coaching with Belma McCaffrey00:34:16

Belma McCaffrey is the founder of the Work Bigger program and the author of the book, How to negotiate without losing friends, fans or job offers.

At Work Bigger, Belma helps her clients redefine what they call work so they can find their mission and lead with purpose.

THE SIX-STEP WORKING BIGGER CAREER COACHING PROGRAM

1 - Identify your mission

Blema is big on mission, so it’s no surprise this is where the Work Bigger program starts.  Your mission starts with your understanding your values.  From there Belma encourages her clients to identify their interests and activities they are naturally drawn to.

To determine your interests, Belma suggests considering the books you read or the podcasts you listen to.  Both are easy starting points.

Belma also helps her clients identify their skills and the work environment or tasks where they feel energized.  It’s the intersection of your values, your interests and your skills where your mission lies.

2 - Tell your authentic personal story

Once you know your mission, you now need to tie your mission to your personal story.  This is where you need to connect your past to your future.

As you develop this story, Blema recommends you develop an ask as well.  The ask is essentially being so clear on your mission that people know exactly how to help you.

This is very similar to what Olivia Gamber and I discussed during our interview.

3 - Develop a powerful personal brand

Belma considers your personal brand to be how others perceive you and your mission. When you walk away from a conversation do people know what your mission is?

Belma helps her clients be as specific as possible about their mission. She coaches them to be laser focused and if necessary leave out groups of people who can’t help you achieve your mission.

4 - Develop a Connections Strategy

Belma is not a fan of the word networking.  It sounds too much like work and can be very awkward. Blema prefers to help her clients build a connection strategy.

Your connection strategy is aligned to your mission and dependent on your personal preferences.  If networking events are not your thing so to speak, don’t attend them. Instead, invite individuals to coffee for example.

5 -  How to properly sell yourself

Belma tells us one reason we feel so awkward about “selling ourselves” is because we are usually doing it without understanding our mission.

Tying your mission to your job search is an easy way for you to sell yourself without feeling bad about it.

The final step in the work bigger career coaching program is negotiation.  Fortunately, Belma has written a book on the topic.

23 Feb 2016Discover Your Career Thread - BYOB400:16:59

This is the Build Your Own personal Brand (BYOB) show where I talk specifics about how to use the 4 step DICE process to Build Your Own Brand.

In the last BYOB episode, I posed the question,“What you are good at?”

In case you missed it last week, It’s your strengths that drive your personal brand. They run through your brand like a thread in your clothing weaving together all of the various aspects of our personalities.

Like our personal brands, we also have a common thread running through our careers. Believe it or not, this metaphorical thread is what links all of our past positions together.

For some of us, our career thread is understood and easy to see. We use it as a measuring stick or guidepost when making career decisions.

For others, maybe even you listening right now, the thread is still waiting to be discovered. Finding this thread will help you understand your career path.

17 Mar 2016Ryan Ahlwardt - Singer and Songwriter00:42:30

Ryan Ahlwardt is a singer, songwriter, arranger and alumnus of the world-renowned ten-man A capella singing group Straight No Chaser.

So far over his musical career Ryan has collaborated with artists such as The Beach Boys, Barry Manilow, Shania Twain, The Temptations and many, many more.

He has appeared on the Macys Thanksgiving day parade, The Today Show and Late Night with Jimmy Falon.

Ryan got started in music in the 7th grade when he began playing his mom's guitar. He learned how to play from an early mentor, in his church youth group.

Turns out relying on mentors for advice and guidance would become a common theme for Ryan throughout his music career.

Ryan's singing career however really got started as an innocent joke, when he and some friends decided to try out for the choir.

Turns out the joke was on him because the choir teacher needed all the male voices she could find. They all made the choir.

This turned out to be a pivotal decision for Ryan because it was in choir where he was able to find his niche.

He ended up staying in choir and on stage throughout high school but it was the guitar that really kept him going and peeked his artistic talents.

TURNING POINT FOR RYAN AHLWARDT

While Ryan enjoyed playing and performing in the choir he never really considered it as a possible profession.

But there was one moment in his choir days Ryan and I talk about when he started to think maybe, just maybe there might be something to this music thing.

During high school, Ryan was a football player or, at least, he was on the team. While he enjoyed the Friday night lights, he started to realize that he was having much more fun in the choir.

So he decided to tell his parent and coaches he was going to hang up the cleats. What happened next would have a profound impact on Ryan's mindset.

In his first performance after giving up his jersey, there in the front two rows sat his former football teammates. His coaches had arranged for them to attend as a show of support.

From that point, Ryan started to come into his own and over the next few years he really pushed himself more and more into singing and performing.

INTRODUCTION TO STRAIGHT NO CHASER

With every performance, Ryan's confidence and skill continued to grow but he still hadn't completely turned the corner on music as a profession, in fact, he went to college to study marketing.

Ryan's introduction to the group Straight No Chaser (SNC) came after his mom brought home a CD of the group after watching them perform at Indiana University.

Ryan was immediately hooked.

A few months later while planning to sing with the choir at the Valentines day dance, he reached out to SNC to ask for permission to sing some of their songs for the dance.

Included with the songs was a note telling Ryan when and where auditions for the group would be held. And so it was that in the 2nd semester of his senior year Ryan auditioned for SNC and made the group.

Ryan sang for SNC throughout college and he graduated with a marketing degree. Still not looking at singing as a profession, his path at that time was to find a job in marketing.

THE COVERDALES

As fate would have it, networking played a part in the next season of Ryan's career. While still in college, one of Ryan's former bandmates had been working as a singer on a cruise ship.  On a whim, he deiced to talk to the director of entertainment on the ship and offered a suggestion about potential entertainment.

As it happens the director was looking to book some bands that had been playing together for awhile and told Ryan's former bandmate to put together a group.

So he contacted Ryan and a few other alumni of SNC and asked them if they would like to sing on cruise ships for the first 6 months out of college.

Of course, they said y

Michael Merrill is the founder and achievement architect of The Velocity Labs.

At The Velocity Labs, Michael teaches others to apply the same strategies and techniques that allowed him to become one the youngest executives at the Walt Disney Company by age 30 while at the same time increasing his earnings by over 500%.

Michael strongly believes that we, you and I, are the drivers of our careers and our life.

So, If you are in a place where you have been passed up year after year for a promotion or you feel stuck with a perceived lack of growth opportunities, then without a doubt, today’s show  is for you.

MICHAEL MERRILL’S VELOCITY LABS

Velocity Labs is a work in progress, but Michael’s goal with Velocity Labs is to help people achieve more with their careers.  He wants to help those who not only want to advance but want to do so at a more rapid rate than they otherwise could have.

Michael’s first offering in the program is the eBook we discussed during today’s podcast.  In addition, he is working on developing a coaching program utilizing videos instructions, worksheets, and one-on-one coaching.

Show Notes: HERE

Today on the BRAND New You Show I walk you through how to build your brand online.

This past weekend I had the opportunity to speak on the topic at WordCamp Dayton. For those not familiar with WordCamps, they are essentially one or two days conferences that celebrate WordPress as a website platform.

The experience levels ranged from total beginner to WordPress developer.  The organizers recognized this and divided the conference into separate tracks depending on experience and interests.

If you get the opportunity to attend a WordCamp, I highly recommend you consider going and the odds of one being near you are actually pretty high.  WordCamps are held in many locations throughout the country and the world.

The cost to attend is usually a fraction of other conferences which makes it an inexpensive way to gain new skills and meet new people.

As I mentioned, my topic was building your personal brand online which was included in the marketing track.
