31 Aug 2020The LinkedIn Profile Glow-Up00:11:07

I have a question for you: on a scale of 1-10 just how much do you hate talking about yourself? I think most of us sit around the 12 or 13 mark. In fact, I think many of us would rather stick hot pins in our eyes than talk ourselves (especially when it's all about how good we are) but unfortunately sometimes, we don’t really get a choice. LinkedIn profiles is one of those times.

In today’s episode I’m going to give you my process for writing a LinkedIn profile professionally and creatively. Yes, you'll still have to talk about yourself, but having a structure to simply fill in will make it at least 1000000x easier, because there’s nothing scarier than a blank white page.

In this episode, I cover:

  • How your LinkedIn differs from your CV and cover letter
  • How to break up your LinkedIn profile
  • Crafting a catchy personal slogan or headline
  • What to cover in the About section
  • Writing 'hooks' that entice people to read more
  • Career-related topics to include
  • Personal facts and whether they belong in a LinkedIn profile
  • Zhooshing your experience section
  • My personal LinkedIn copy, that you can use as a reference

03 Sep 2020What the F**k is Tone of Voice, and Where Do I Get One?00:25:08

Tone of voice is a HUGE topic — if you ask me, it’s one of the biggest puzzle pieces when it comes to building a brand. All too often, I see SO many businesses throwing money at their branding, building the perfect website, paying to work with influencers, investing in marketing strategies, and these things are all important in their own way, but most of the time, these clients have spent so much money on these elements, that they’ve got nothing left for their tone of voice or copywriting. This is usually because people have NO idea what tone of voice is, or just how important it is to the success of your brand.

So, I’m going to go ALL OUT in this episode. Yes, I’m going to explain what tone of voice, but I’m also going to give away some secrets: some of my best tips for defining a super unique voice that’s relevant to your customer, the questions I ask my tone of voice clients, where I research and how I brainstorm to create the character, and then, most importantly, how I bring it to life on every single platform or medium.

In this episode, I cover:

  • What is tone of voice?
  • What does it mean in a practical sense?
  • Why do you need a strong tone of voice?
  • What happens if you don't have one?
  • Defining your own unique tone of voice
  • Exercises to identify your audience, points of difference and voice
  • How and where we research to find a brand voice
  • Bringing your brand voice to life on social media, emails, email marketing and more

01 Feb 20216 Copywriting Mistakes You're Probably Making00:14:45

I’m here to tell you you DON’T need to be a professional copywriter or even a natural writer to DIY your copy. Of course, hiring a professional is easier, but it’s expensive, so if you’re not there yet, I’ve got some tips that will hopefully help you to write confident, effective and on-brand copy in the meantime. These are the mistakes that I see ALL the time when it comes to copy, and the biggest traps that I fell into... before I knew what I was doing.

It’s not always going to be easy to write your own copy — and you will stare at the blinking cursor a lot — but if you can at least focus on avoiding these mistakes, you’ll be so much better off.

In this episode, I cover:

  • Features vs. benefits
  • Connecting with your audience
  • Defining your tone of voice
  • Planning your messages
  • The overthinking trap
  • My favourite trick for great copy

Being called polarising — no matter how insulting it might feel — gives you a major advantage in your space, if you use it wisely.

10 Nov 2021The 4 F's to F*cking Fantastic About Us Pages (+ Free Workbook!)00:18:00

Eight months later and The Bossy. Type is back! I've been working on my first ever course, Bossy. Copy College, all year and have learned so much about my own process. One of the biggest revelations was how I write About Us pages, bios and brand stories.

After unpacking and refining my method, I couldn't help but share it — especially because these pages have a reputation for being insanely difficult to write (seriously, who wants to talk about themselves that much???). This process is SO easy, yet it always results in an effective and highly engaging About page.

In this episode, I cover:

  • Why none of us like the About Us page
  • My checklist for a 'successful' About Us page
  • How I write them differently to everyone — including other copywriters
  • Why About Us pages are not like other website pages
  • My exact 4-step framework to an attention-grabbing About Us
  • The free workbook that's packed with visual layouts, hidden gems, topic lists and a full example, written by me
  • Details on Bossy. Copy College, launching early December!

In this episode, I cover:

  • What is SEO
  • What killer SEO can do for your business
  • Why it's near impossible to have SEO copy, without forfeiting tone of voice (and our special process for making it happen)
  • Where to research your SEO keywords
  • Taylah's tips for weaving them through your copy

18 Nov 2021This is why no one opens your email00:15:43

Do you open enewsletters? Probably not. Most people are brutal with their inbox — add to that the average open rate of emails is only about 21% (according to Mailchimp), and it’s not looking good for the contents of YOUR emails. It just goes to show the subject line is IT — so you better give it the love and attention it deserves.

Today, we’re dissecting subject lines and how we can make them our bitch, with a lesson taken from Bossy. Copy College.

In this episode, I cover:

  • The two parts of your subject line you need to know
  • Top tips for open-me subject lines, from Bossy.'s creative copywriter, Anna
  • A sneak peek into our process for writing fun (+ effective) subject lines
  • Our subject line examples for welcome, post-purchase, abandoned cart + winback emails, using the two custom brands created for Bossy. Copy College

22 Nov 2021Ecomm Biz? These are the Email Flows You Need Like, Yesterday00:15:11

A lot of businesses get their auto email flows wrong — especially in the early days. Here, I run through the email flows that you absolutely need if you’re a ecomm business. For 'open me!' subject lines to match, follow this ep with episode 35.

In this episode, I cover:

  • The benefits of a *chefs kiss* automated email sequence
  • The email flows you need like, yesterday
  • The purpose of each email + what to include
  • How to save time when creating your email flows
