17 May 2022The Myths of Supplementation with Giorgi Dinkov01:56:02

Today we are talking all about supplements.  The good the bad and the ugly.  I will often see clients who have seen many people before me and some will come with a container of supplements that they have been prescribed or they have looked up on the internet and are taking for this and the other.  So, are they really doing anything?  Is it as simple as just looking at your blood test and saying, you’re low in vitamin X so take supplement X?  Are you just wasting your money?

Today, my guest is independent researcher Giorgi Dinkov, whose focus is on biochemistry and physiology.  Giorgi has become a great resource for me, which has helped with so many clients, and so I wanted his biology and chemistry expertise to talk about all things supplementation.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • Blood test says lacking in x so you take pill for X
  • Allopathic and functional medicine really work the same-one prescribes drugs, the other, supplements
  • Cholesterol and statin
  • Fish oil
  • Is it true that diet can never be enough as the soil is depleted etc so we must supplement.
  • Food works in combinations, not on their own ie. iron myth.
  • The most over prescribed supplements like iron, zinc and vitamin C
  • Why some don't work and can actually be bad for you
  • The most underutilized interventions, medicinal and supplements?
  • Niacinamide
  • Thyroid
  • Aspirin -
  • Progesterone
  • Thiamine
  • Vitamin A
  • Caffeine
  • Copper.
  • Vitamin E
  • Cascara
  • Cyproheptadine
  • How does metabolic health affect our levels of vitamins and minerals
  • How can under eating in general or under eating certain food groups effect our vitamins of minerals and thus lead us to think we need supplementation?
  • Endotoxin
  • Gut health
  • Tamoxifen -Oestrogen - Vitamin E
  • Cortisol atrophies everything discriminately

01 Nov 2020The Foundations of Talking About Our Bodies, with Sarah Sproule01:05:40

Sarah Sproule is an occupational therapist with a masters in sexuality studies and host of the fabulous podcast, “Sitting in a Car” where she helps parents stay connected with their kids while having conversations about puberty, bodies and sex.

I don’t really think that we can truly get in tune with our body, to understand how it never lies, until we can get comfortable with talking about it.  All the parts of our body, relay messages to us about the state of our physiology.  Our nervous system, our digestive system, our musculoskeletal system AND so does our reproductive system.  For instance a man might have problems with erections or ejaculation because of a spinal disc injury or nerve compression or because of inadequate calories or glucose dysregulation, thyroid hormone conversion or emotional and financial stress.  A woman’s vaginal mucus and it’s changes, can tell her if she has adequate progesterone which is an anti anxiety, anti inflammatory, immune enhancing, recovery hormone.  And as a coach, I can use all this information to know whether my exercise and nutrition program is enhancing or decreasing physiology for performance.

So, how do we get comfortable with talking about these parts of our body.  How do we get comfortable with seeing them as more than the cultural labels and functional labels of sex and how do we move past the connotations behind that?

Well, I love Sarah’s work because she is an influencer and an experienced practitioner in this space of changing our thoughts, our programming our beliefs and getting in touch with why it is so important to have these conversations about our bodies, not only with our kids, but ourselves.

In this episode, we talk about

  • Where our thoughts about sex come from and our negative associations of shame, sin, dirty
  • How culture affects our thoughts about our bodies
  • Our sexual system is just another body system
  • How we can live in a culture of openness and liberation, but how we might and can love and care ourselves through our own past experiences and beliefs about sex
  • The narrative around sex and bodily functions that I was brought up with and how I got over them
  • Sarah’s tips for changing our narrative
  • The problem of viewing ourselves as broken or needing to do lots of work
  • How do we talk to our kids about bodies and sex
  • How we do it over years, laying foundations
  • What to do if our kids our older and we’ve never spoken to them about sex
  • What words to use with our kids and when
  • How even as a sexuality educator, Sarah had to have some love and care for where her thoughts and beliefs came from
  • How getting comfortable with these topics empowers us in many areas of our lives

03 Feb 2022The Myths of Exercise Intolerance with Libby Wescombe02:07:22

So what if you exercise and you have a negative side effect to exercise?  You might experience fatigue post workout, odema, trouble sleeping, night sweats or even DOMS for days.  Or you might just not be able to put on muscle or lose weight no matter how much you exercise.

Well, this is something I have seen in my work for 19 years but has been recently been coined “exercise intolerance” in the pro-metabolic community and along with it has stemmed a whole further list of myths like “cardio is bad for you” and left a whole group of people feeling like they will never be able to deal with stress.

Another cohort is frustrated with the knowledge that to be healthy, you need muscle mass, but then any time they push the weights, they are having these negative reactions.

So what is this all about?  Is there really such a thing as exercise intolerance? Why does it happen and what do we do about it?

Well, back on the show today is one of my favourite muscle building experts and nutritionists, Libby Wescombe and we’re going to tell you everything you need to know about getting out of this funk.

In this episode:

  • What is Exercise Intolerance?
  • Adrenal Fatigue
  • Thyroid Conditions
  • Diabetes Type 2 and Insulin Resistance
  • Keto, Vegetarian, Paleo diets and the affect on Exercise Physiology
  • Fat Burning and Fat Loss are separate things
  • Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness DOMS for days

  • Mould Disease - CIRS
  • Cellular Respiration

05 May 2022The Myths of the Skin with Emma Sgourakis02:09:04

Skincare has to be one of the biggest industries, turning over multi millions, billions, trillions of dollars per year.  I would also say that it is one of the industries that is full of the most BS and preys on the vulnerabilities of both women and men and often I find clients are doing more harm than good with their skincare regimen.  Be it an aging issue, or a condition like eczema, rosacea, melasma, pigmentation and the like.  To me the skin is one of the biggest messengers in our body.  And remember, The Body Never Lies

Today, my guest is nutritionist and business woman, Emma Sgourakis who owns Saturee with Kitty Blomfield.  In the wake of Saturee launching their new skincare line I really wanted to put her in the hot seat and ask her all about the skin from a nutritionist’s perspective, but also from someone who has spent the last three years researching and developing a product in the midst of an industry praying on our vulnerability of what’s happening to our face.  Today, we’re going to talk today about how the Body Never Lies about what’s going on with our skin.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Acne
  • Eczema
  • Cellulite
  • Wrinkles
  • Stretch Marks
  • Melasma
  • Thyroid
  • thiamine
  • Dark circles
  • Sun Damage
  • Lipofuscin
  • How much sun should you have
  • Accutane and the Pill for acne
  • Botox
  • Skincare with Saturated Fat vs PUFA
  • What is really happening when getting treatments that stimulate collagen and is that a good thing.
  • What are the ingredients in skincare
  • What are we paying for

15 Feb 2022The Myths of Men’s Health with Jay Feldman02:17:42

I feel like we have spent a lot of time on the show, talking about women’s physiology and general physiology and how the body never lies about health, but I wanted to dedicate and episode for men specifically.

Can men really tolerate stress more than women - physiological speaking? Is fasting more suitable for them? Why do men get man boobs?  Why can’t some men put on muscle mass? Is there really such a thing as Andropause?  Are fish oils going to save men from neurodegenerative disease and heart issues?  What about the rage or even an inability to express rage?   What does this all say about men and their health, specifically?

Well today, I have back on the show, Jay Feldman to talk all about men’s health.  And fellas, if this is your first time here, you might really like to go back and listen to Jay’s interview on the Myths of the Liver as a good follow up to this one.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Belly Fat

16 Nov 2021The Myths of Fertility and Pregnancy with Loren de la Cruz01:44:17

Fertility and pregnancy, birthing and mothering are high energy demanding processes.  I think we really take for granted just how much our body needs to make and recover from having babies.

There are so many myths around this area of a woman’s life and I think a lot of them leave women fraught with emotions, guilt, shame, disempowerments and to be honest, long term health issues.

My wish is for women to learn about their bodies more to have empowered lives and so I really wanted to dismantle all these myths around fertility and pregnancy.

My guest today, Loren de la Cruz, is a Nutritionist specialising in preconception, prenatal, pregnancy and postpartum nutrition, from all backgrounds, but she does have a specialty for helping couples with metabolic issues like thyroid and autoimmune conditions.

Today we are talking about all the Myths around Fertility, Conception, Pregnancy and beyond.

In this episode we talk about:

  • The common misconceptions about fertility, preconception and pregnancy
  • A healthy cycle and how long it takes for a healthy egg to form
  • Coming off birth control
  • Understanding fertility issues like low thyroid which might not present as low thyroid on a blood test, mineral deficiencies etc
  • men’s role in fertility
  • Myth of not eating liver in pregnancy and vitamin A and copper deficiency
  • Myth of prenatal and antenatal vitamins and ascorbic acid,
  • Iron overload and copper deficiency.
  • Pre-Eclampsia
  • Gestational Diabetes

13 Jul 2021The Foundations of Nutrition Application with Kira Sutherland01:44:19

It is so confusing as a consumer, to know which nutrition protocol is right for you.  The market is oversaturated with different diets and protocols and with the rise of social media, it is saturated with all types of practitioners and influences.  How do you know what to do?

Well, I think as a consumer, you have to get smarter and filter out the BS.  I have had clients come to me telling me the most outrageous things they have been advised to do, from doctors, from dieticians, from health coaches, you name it.  The qualification does not make the practitioner great.  It is the application of the practice.

There are, I believe, some fundamentals that need to be the absolute baseline for getting a result with nutrition and today’s episode is all about that.  I hope at the end of this, you can be more discerning about what you do and who you work with and if you’re a practitioner go that extra mile for your clients.

Kira Sutherland is a Naturopath and Sports Nutritionist with more than 25 years in clinical practice.  Her focus in performance nutrition led her to be the first Naturopath in Australia to undertake the International Olympic Committees diploma in sports nutrition. She is also the 2019 winner of the BioCeuticals Integrative Medicine Award for Excellence in practice (Nutrition/Dietetics).  And she is someone I look up to for a few reasons.  She harps on about the basics to both her students and patients, she’s a stickler for food logs and measuring physiology and performance and she is amazing in what she does for female athletes as “women are not small men”.

Kira divides her time between clinical practice, lecturing at the undergraduate level, and mentoring practitioners of complementary medicine in the application of holistic sports nutrition. I hope you enjoy this episode with Kira Sutherland.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How is nutrition research done and what are its limitations
  • How do you look at research and translate it
  • How much study is done on women
  • Who is research done on
  • Research in practice in the clinic
  • Genetic predisposition for body types
  • The importance of lifestyle factors
  • Treating the whole person
  • What is an athlete and when does sports nutrition apply
  • Popular diets like Keto, IF
  • The importance of food diaries
  • Helping our kids be in tune with their bodies
  • When in the day are we best to eat?
  • The foundation of nutrition is mitochondria
  • Anti-aging is about creating more mitochondria
  • Timing eating with training
  • The myths of carbohydrates
  • The myths of caloric deficits
  • Basal Metabolic Rate
  • Losing weight healthily
  • Losing weight for competition for athletes and not compromising performance
  • Metabolic slow down that happens with chronic low a,b,c diets
  • Why one size fits all doesn’t work
  • Safe calorie restriction for weight loss
  • Statins and mitochondrial damage
  • Genetics and Epigenetics
  • Different body types and what sports suit them

Kira practices clinically in Sydney, lectures in undergraduate studies, mentors nutritionists and also is a keynote speaker.  You can find her on instagram @uberhealth and on her website:

01 Jan 2025Why Food Logging is the Key to Your Health with Leila Lutz01:04:32

In this episode I tackle the common misconceptions around food logging and reveal how this powerful tool can actually enhance your health, fitness, and overall wellbeing.

By addressing the widespread belief that food logging is only about restricting calories and causing disordered eating I debunk these myths and explain how logging is vital in learning how to maintain optimal health and performance - not just for weight loss.

You'll also discover how food logging can help you overcome issues like binge eating, digestive problems, and low energy availability. Leila emphasizes the need to look at the emotional and psychological drivers behind our eating habits, not just the numbers on the plate.

By the end of this episode, you'll have a whole new perspective on food logging. I will show you how organization and structure around your nutrition can actually create more freedom and balance in your life - enabling you to pursue your passions and interests beyond just your health goals.

If you're ready to ditch the diet mentality, get off the restriction rollercoaster, and start feeling your absolute best, this is a must-listen episode.

In this episode:

  • Understanding food logging and its misconceptions
  • The role of food logging in performance and health assessing and interpreting food logs
  • Macronutrient and micronutrient analysis
  • Consistency and meal timing in food logging addressing emotional and psychological aspects
  • The role of stress and circadian rhythms challenges and solutions in food logging
  • The importance of self-care and balance

02 Nov 2021The Myths of Pelvic Floor and Abdominal Wall with Joelene Murdoch and Tamara Woods01:38:43

There was something that I put off for years and years.  My body was telling me it was out of balance, but I ignored it until I got really motivated about it.  I had a super tight pelvic floor.  It needed manual therapy to release it and retraining on my part to get it functional again and it wasn’t until I wanted to have a baby without any intervention, to protect my precious parts and my future in all the lifting I like to do, that I did something about it.  It was a bit like an accountant not doing their taxes, but hey, you know.

Joelene Murdoch and Tamara Woods from the Physiotherapy Clinic were the two women who were integral in my journey to overcome years of dysfunction, have the birth I wanted and come back to lifting and training, even stronger than before.  They also look after a lot of my Sydney clients, some without babies, some during pregnancy and some many years and years after the fact.

Like most topics on this show, I feel there are a lot of misconceptions about the pelvic floor and the abdominal wall, as well as a barrage of programs and prescriptions that misunderstand it, confuse the consumer and oftentimes, make it worse.

So today, on The Body Never Lies, Tamara, Jo and I are diving into all things pelvic floor and the abdominal wall.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • What is the pelvic floor and what does it do
  • How we can have pelvic floor dysfunction that is not birth or pregnancy related.
  • Indicators of dysfunction that are not incontinence
  • Pelvic floor function affects - fertility, labour, birth and recovery
  • Childbirth is at fault and its normal to have issues
  • Having a C-section will save your pelvic floor - I can’t believe and OB told me this once!
  • Kegels in pregnancy, kegels in general
  • The importance of an internal assessment
  • Preparation for birth
  • How other parts of the body affect the pelvic floor.
  • Training and pelvic floor
  • Abdominal wall dysfunction and the problems with exercise programs
  • What exercise is appropriate in pregnancy - the problems with the guidelines
  • Safe return to exercise - the problems with the guidelines.
  • What to do if you had your babies years ago
  • What about women who have not and/or aren’t going to have babies?
  • When aesthetics motivations are really helpful
  • Men and their pelvic floor

22 Mar 2022The Myths of Menopause with Keith Littlewood01:30:36

I’m sorry to say that you guys have been asking for this episode for ages and it has taken Tommo and I this long to get to it.  So I apologize.  There really is not enough great info out there about menopause, but that is slowly changing and I hope Tommo’s amazing wealth of knowledge really helps you today.

For those of you who don’t know, Keith Littlewood aka Tommo, is a friend and mentor of mine and has fast become our resident hormonal expert.  He is currently doing his Phd in endocrinology (the study of hormones) and would love your support and for you to donate to his gofundme.  And if you have not listened to his previous episodes, you're going to find out why his work is so important.

There is a significant amount of misinformation and poor applications in medicine in relation to Hormonal Replacement Therapy, especially with Thyroid, but also reproductive issues in general and menopause.  Today we are going to be exploring those around menopause, especially the erroneous idea of Oestrogen being an appropriate application.

We’re going to be talking about just why women suffer - some more than others.  And I’m really hoping that this is going to be listened to by women of all ages, because it is in fact years of cumulative lifestyle and environmental factors that contribute to how we shall in fact go through the change and what our health will be like afterwards

So, share this one with your daughters, your sisters and your mothers so that we can all live long healthy lives with great bone mineral density, thyroids and muscle mass.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Adolescence
  • The role of oestrogen
  • The myths of applying oestrogen as HRT
  • Oestrogen Overload
  • Ovulation
  • Why do some women suffer more than others?
  • Pre Menstural Syndrome

30 Nov 2021The Myths of the Liver with Jay Feldman02:07:52

Liver health is a big focus in the holistic health world.  Yet, I am seeing more and more that "healthy people" who eat "whole foods" are suffering from issues such as Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease, Diabetes, Thyroid Issues etc.

I am also seeing that a lot of people are doing liver detoxes to boost their immunity for the current health issue of our time and that these programs involve cutting out food groups and/or significant supplementation.

So why is this and does it even work?

Do we even need to detoxify our livers?

Is detoxifying the liver really the answer to strong immunity?

Why are seemingly healthy people having liver issues?

Well, I invited Jay Feldman on the show to talk about exactly what the liver is, what its function is and what it needs to operate at its highest capacity

Jay is a health coach and an Independent researcher who set out to study medicine at university so that he might become a doctor, but after seeing the modern medical perspective - a this for that approach to fight against our bodies - he moved into studying energetics and physiology so that he could teach people to harness their energy and work with their bodies.

You can catch a more in-depth look at the liver on his podcast, The Energy Balance Podcast, where he has a six part series on the liver if you're hungering for more after this episode and if you head over to Jay's blog at www.jayfeldmanwellness.com , you will see just how meticulous he is in his research and writings.

In this episode we talk about:

  • The liver as a filter
  • Detoxing the liver
  • The gut and the liver
  • Fructose malabsorption and intolerance
  • Carbs and giving up sugar for liver health
  • Fasting for liver detoxification
  • Animal Protein and the liver
  • Fats and the liver
  • Endotoxin
  • PUFA
  • Alcohol
  • Oestrogen
  • Iron
  • Metformin
  • Statins
  • Birth Control Pills

I hope this episode dispels a lot of myths and confusion and helps you remember that The Body Never Lies.

I would love it if you would comment below or share in your stories what your biggest takeaway was and tag @jfwellness and me.

23 Aug 2020The Foundations of Transformation with Pip McKay01:36:57

Pip McKay is one of Australia’s most successful coaches and trainers who has helped thousands of people clear away their blocks to success and fulfill more of their potential.  Pip was one of the founding members of the Australian Board of NLP and went on to create her own techniques: she pioneered Matrix Therapies in 2001 to clear parental programming so you can step into your true identity.  She then created Archetypal Coaching so you can get clear on your passion and purpose and express your soul’s code in all areas of your life.

Pip was my personal coach for many years and then my mentor as I took on all her techniques and integrated them into my health and performance programs.  Her amazing work really helps me with clients because as you have heard from all our other guests, the path of health and healing is one of clearing your stress and trauma, getting in touch with your emotions and learning the art of parenting self, so that you can be your own empowered person.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • The Hero’s Journey a concept I find really helpful for people “stuck” in a health crisis or feeling like they don’t have a way out.
  • The Journey of turning from a child, to a teenager into an adult
  • The coach who coaches from the place of a mature adult vs the coach who teaches from the place of the teenager
  • Getting stuck in the place of the teenager
  • Compliance, defiance, obedience and disobedience and traditional models of patriarchy
  • The cycle of addiction
  • Why do people tear each other down - The oppressor, oppressing the oppressed.
  • Why people are so scared of the pain
  • How do we truly connect with self
  • Clearing parental programming using Matrix Therapies
  • The beauty of Matrix Therapies is you don’t have to go in to, or relive the pain.
  • The Archetypes of Manifestation and Transformation and how they helped Pip to meditate when she had been trying to for years.
  • The difference between Pip’s Archetypes and Jung and Carolyn Myss
  • Masculine and Feminine Coaching
  • The beliefs that are passed down through generations that affect the way we live, work and rest

29 Jun 2021The Foundations of Holistic Health with Suzi Nevell01:55:19

Suzi Nevell, physiotherapist and CHEK faculty, is my dear friend and has been my greatest mentor for working with the physical body and so I have invited her here today, to talk about Holistic Health.

Suzi has an amazing professional career as a physiotherapist spanning more than 27 years. After some years touring the world with a variety of high performance athletes and sports teams, and becoming New Zealand’s Women’s Trampoline Champion, Suzi moved to the United States.

While there, she was invited by Paul Chek to join the CHEK Institute’s senior teaching staff in San Diego. Over the course of the next 16 years, she absorbed Paul’s teachings on blending physical, nutritional, mental, emotional and spiritual coaching into a coaching model for health.

Today, Suzi brings all her experience, professional expertise and philosophies on life, health and wellbeing, for the benefit of her clinic and gym, Sweet7 back in her hometown, Auckland, New Zealand.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why we need to look at the person that has the disease, not the disease that has the person.
  • Suzi’s experience as an athlete that inspired her to be a holistic practitioner
  • My experience with trauma and how movement helped me overcome that.
  • How Suzi moved from a physiotherapist into being holistic health practitioner
  • The Six foundations of health: Breathing, Hydration, Nutrition, Movement, Thoughts, Sleep
  • Suzi’s 7th Foundation - hence naming her business Sweet 7
  • How to choose the priority issue for a client
  • How the client actually tells us what the diagnosis is
Practitioners working together for the client - Suzi and I talk about our referral networks of allied health practitioners and how the dream team can get a client real success.
  • Real client cases Suzi and I have worked on/are working on where the issue has required us to use the totem pole assessment and build a treatment plan encompassing all aspects of healing and sometimes we’ve not even been the practitioner needed to work on them.
  • When things are actually nothing to do with the musculoskeletal system and we need to refer out.
  • My experience of orthodontics for a chronic jaw issue and what that taught me about coaching clients.
  • Being able filter out what is appropriate for a client
  • The Totem Pole, created by Paul Chek and the hierarchy of bodily systems for survival.  https://chekinstitute.com/totempole/

You can find Suzi Nevell at https://www.sweet7.co.nz/physio-in-auckland/

She is available in Auckland for physiotherapy appointments and online for practitioner mentoring and presentations.  I highly recommend you get in touch with Suzi if you are a practitioner wanting to expand your practice.

27 Sep 2020The Foundations of OUR Relationship with Shaun Reynolds01:54:31

Well, this is a pretty special episode to me, because I got an overwhelming response from my audience to hear how Shaun Reynolds, my amazing fiance and I, do life together to achieve health for ourselves, each other and our family.  I can’t tell you how much I loved recording it with him too.  Shaun is a really private person.  He does not do social media, he does not work in health, but is a corporate lawyer, working in Mergers and Acquisitions, so we couldn't have more different careers. And even though his colleagues listen to my podcast he was really supportive of my mission and agreeable to the interview.  What a guy!

Now, Shaun and I are in no way perfect, but we do share that too.  What we do have, I know for sure, is a real team effort and collaborative process that ensures health in our family.  From cooking, shopping, housework, finances, time management, careers and parenting.  We are 100% a team and that flows over to health and happiness in all areas of our life.

We do not always agree and hit a huge bump in the road and did some couples therapy last year, but we talk about that too.  We also have no idea what we are doing as parents, so we regularly seek help and advice for that too.

This is our relationship.  Yours will be different and unique to you and your personalities, values and goals, but I hope this inspires you to create a healthy life together, no matter what that looks like for you.  And to my single listeners, when I was single, I would spend lots of time hanging out with couples who I wanted to have certain aspects of their relationship in my future relationship.  So, I hope this inspires you too, to find a partner who supports you and creates with you.  I LOVED recording this with Shaun, so I hope you love and enjoy it too.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How we met - ofcourse!
  • Knowing your own values
  • Having relationship values
  • Setting Goals together
  • Working through your past
  • Your partner’s stuff is not your stuff
  • You can’t “fix” your partner
  • Your greatest strength is often also your greatest weakness
  • Holding Space for each other
  • My negative patterns
  • Shaun’s negative patterns
  • Love Languages
  • How we live life according to our goals and values
  • Being discerning and cutting out stress
  • My health and how Shaun has been with that
  • Being on purpose and supporting each other through that
  • How we got through isolation and what it meant for our careers, relationship AND finances
  • Budgeting, managing finances and setting goals as a couple
  • Mine and Shaun’s negative money habits that we both agree we need to work on
  • Life is never fair or balanced and the weight constantly changes
  • How we budget, plan, shop and cook food

10 Aug 2021The Myths of Adrenal Fatigue with Josh Rubin01:09:56

Josh Rubin’s interview on episode one, was one of the most popular in the series, so I gather most of you know him well.  Honestly, I just love working with him anyways, so whether you guys liked him or not, he was coming back.

Josh is a CHEK Level 4, Certified Nutritionist and is about to complete his studies in Osteopathic Medicine. If you don’t know Josh yet, I highly recommend you listen to his first interview on Metabolism and look him up as @realfoodganstas on Instagram.  Josh has been helping people heal, using nutritional foundations, from metabolic issues such as thyroid disease and various fatigue syndromes for many years.

Adrenal Fatigue is a term coined by the functional medicine practice.  It has been helpful in many ways in recognising that there is such a thing as physiological burnout.  We need to make space for that or we will never heal.  But Josh and I really share the view that the blanket diagnosis and protocol skims the surface and may limit you in terms of recovery.

Today we would like to discuss the adrenals and what they do and if they really can get fatigued or not.  We also talk about what we need to do to get out of this syndrome that allows you to return to a fully nourished and energetic state, enjoying life.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Hans seyle General and Adaptation Syndrome
  • Supplements
  • Food intolerances
  • Stage 1-3 of adrenal fatigue
  • The Saliva test and unbound cortisol
  • Sugar and salt cravings
  • Mineral ratios
  • Adrenal thyroid relationship
  • Temp and pulse
  • Histamine intolerance
  • Oestrogen dominance
  • Liver detoxification myths
  • Stress hormone addiction
  • Finding the root cause of dysfunction

I highly recommend Josh’s program, the RTN Method. He and his wife Jeanne are available for one on one and group sessions and you can find them at www.eastwesthealing.com and on instagram as @realfoodgangstas.

If you took something away from this episode, I would love it if you shared it on instagram and tagged @realfoodgangstas and @leilalutz

I would also be so grateful if you would rate and review the podcast.  And remember to subscribe so you never miss an episode.

19 Oct 2021The Myths of PCOS and Endometriosis with Jessica Ash01:29:55

Getting diagnosed with PCOS and/or Endometriosis can feel like a life sentence for some.  I’ve seen two kinds of camps.  One where women have been having issues with their cycle or periods and getting diagnosed and feeling like it was a really deflating, non solution answer and others who really struggle with the debilitating symptoms of either condition with repetitive surgery and medications. There are of course many band-aid approaches, like the pill and lots of dietary recommendations like quitting sugar, dairy, gluten etc, (and I say bandaid because as soon as you take off said bandaid, the wound opens up again),  but what is the cause of these hormonal issues and how do we really overcome them so we can have beautiful, healthy reproductive systems and hormones?

Jessica Ash is a Clinical Nutritionist, Functional Diagnostic Nutritionist and Holistic Health Coach and her course “Fully Nourished” has helped thousands of women overcome hormonal issues like PCOS, Endometriosis, rebalance their hormones after coming off birth control as well as solve underlying thyroid and hormonal issues.  All with Food!

In this episode we talk about:

  • PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome vs Cystic Ovaries
  • How PCOS is diagnosed
  • Genetics vs imprinting
  • Adrenaline and Cortisol
  • Giving up dairy and sugar
  • Carbohydrates
  • High blood sugar
  • Low blood sugar
  • Metformin
  • The contraceptive pill as a solution
  • Metabolic Syndrome
  • Mitochondrial Dysfunction
  • Focusing on weight loss
  • Anaemia
  • Iron Overload
  • Mineral Deficiencies

05 Oct 2021The Myths of Healthy Fats with Matt Blackburn01:19:37

Ok, so what is healthy fat? We moved away from trans fats like margarine and cooking oils, but just because a fat is not a trans fat, does not mean it is healthy.

Someone who has moved deep into the study of fats, especially PolyUnsaturated Fats or PUFAs, is Matt Blackburn.  Matt is a health and longevity researcher and founder of the CLF Protocol, looking at what he believes to be the root cause of disease, calcification, lipofuscin and fibrosis.  One of the huge things his program deals with, of course, is an indepth look at PolyUnsaturated Fatty Acids: what they are, what foods they are in - they are actually in a lot of “health foods” - how to balance them and how to detox from them.

So today we’re going to be talking about all the different fats and how The Body Never Lies to us about fat for optimal metabolism and health.

In this episode, Matt and I discuss:

  • Saturated Fats
  • Monounsaturated Fats
  • PUFA
  • Essential Fatty Acids EFAs
  • Omega 3 and Omega 6
  • Oxygen
  • Iron
  • Copper
  • Oxidative Stress
  • Free Radical damage
  • NAFD and liver function
  • The importance of sugar and carbohydrates
  • How To detox from PUFA
  • Emotional connections
  • Coffee
  • PUFA and sunlight
  • Vitamin E

Matt hangs out on Instagram mostly as @mattblackburn but you can find out more about his protocol, Mitolife Academy and Mitolife supplements at www.matt-blackburn.com

And don’t forget to subscribe to his podcast Mito Life Radio where you’ll hear some familiar friends, but also some super interesting guests.

19 Apr 2022The Myths of Diabetes Type 1 & 2 with Isaac Pohlman01:57:46

So once upon a time, Type 1 diabetes was known as something you were  born with or developed as an infant or young child and Type 2 diabetes was known as being the one you developed from being overweight and living the high fat, high sugar, processed food and sedentary lifestyle.  But I am seeing more and more that these are not the norms anymore.  I have clients who don’t eat “bad food” and are pre-diabetic and I have clients with chronic blood sugar handling issues that have a myriad of issues and all that is being prescribed is metformin.  And as my guest today will tell you, there are more and more young adults being diagnosed with Type 1 later in life.

My guest today, Isaac Pohlman has a degree in Physiology, a Masters in Nutritional Science and is a Registered Dietitian.  But he also has Type 1 Diabetes and hypothyroidism, both of which he developed in college.

Today I want to ask him about his work specializing in people with blood sugar handling issues and insulin resistance ie some people have these issues and don’t have diabetes, why its happening and what we can do about it rather than cutting out entire food groups from our diet and going on drugs, that just cascade into needing more and more drugs.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • What is diabetes Type 1
  • Type 2
  • What is insulin resistance
  • What is blood sugar handling
  • How are blood sugar and insulin related
  • How is diabetes diagnosed
  • The glucose tolerance test
  • The HBA1C
  • The use of insulin
  • The use of metformin
  • Cutting out sugar for diabetes management
  • The liver and diabetes
  • PUFA and diabetes
  • Fructose
  • Grain consumption and diabetes
  • The SAD and diabetes
  • Gluten and diabetes

  • Keto
  • Restoring metabolic function using metabolic foods and food timing macro balancing

07 Sep 2021The Myth of Calorie Restriction Kitty Blomfield and Craig McDonald01:30:41

Now I think most of my audience and followers know Kitty Blomfield.  She’s my no BS metabolic bestie who rants on and on about getting off the restrictive diet hamster wheel, so you can build a body you love.  Well, Kitty and her super duper business partner and life partner, Craigh McDonald, have coached hundreds of people through their win at life program.

Now if you listened to my interview with nutritionist, Kira Sutherland and how to apply nutrition research into practice, you will know that most research studies are done for only 6 weeks and for us practitioners who have worked with clients over long periods of time and poured over months of food logs, we would argue that the data we have collected on sustainable weight loss is definitively more relative.

Craigh and Kitty have coached hundreds of women through their program.  Hundreds of women have put in their weekly data of food and subjective measures, not just weight loss, but health measures and they have achieved phenomenal weight loss transformations.  And so I had to have Kitty and Craig on the show to get the low down on healthy sustainable weight loss and what it takes to get off the diet merry go round and build a body you love.

Now, Kitty and Craig have their next break free challenge coming up and enrolments close 27th of September.  So if you would like to have the amazing experience of working with them on your food and exercise for four weeks, so that you can break free from restrictive diets and build a body you love, please click here to join the waitlist.

And if you got something out of this episode, please let us know.  Share your thoughts on instagram and tag me at @leilalutz as well as @kittyblomfield and @iamcraigmcdonald.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why 12 week challenges on extreme caloric deficits appears to work at the time but are not sustainable
  • Metabolic Adaptation and what it happens
  • The difference between surviving and thriving
  • Weightloss vs Optimisation
  • How to get back to eating a healthy amount of food
  • The importance of a food diary and data

14 Jan 2025The Importance of Knowing Your Food Story with Leila Lutz00:49:36

In this powerful solo episode, Leila Lutz delves deep into the importance of understanding your personal "food story" - the beliefs, patterns, and experiences that have shaped your relationship with food. Drawing from her own transformative journey, Leila shares how her lifelong struggle with under-eating and high-achieving behaviour stemmed from a complex web of family dynamics, trauma, and the need to create safety and security.

Leila candidly explores how her background as the eldest daughter in a chaotic, financially-strained household influenced her tendency to push food aside in pursuit of constant achievement. She unpacks the addictive nature of adrenaline and cortisol, and how this "busy" mindset kept her from truly nourishing herself.

With raw vulnerability, Leila also reveals the generational trauma and beliefs around food that were passed down from her mother's own difficult upbringing. This powerful insight underscores Leila's unique approach to coaching, which emphasizes the critical role of self-parenting and taking responsibility for one's own healing.

Throughout the episode, Leila offers listeners a glimpse into her personal process of uncovering and addressing these deep-seated patterns, highlighting the importance of consistent self-care, mindful eating, and creating a life of balance and connection. Her story serves as a powerful testament to the transformative power of understanding your food story and the courage to rewrite it.

  • Understanding Your Food Story
  • The Impact of Under-Eating
  • The Role of Stress and Adrenaline

  • Addressing Addiction and Overachievement
  • The Influence of Family Beliefs

21 Sep 2021The Myths of Body Composition and Performance with Libby Wescombe01:43:14

So we have touched on sustainable weight loss with Kitty and Craig last episode, but now I want to get into the nitty gritty of body composition.  So, say you are training consistently and you’re at a relatively acceptable weight, but you have a certain look you want to achieve.  You want that toned and defined look and in your head it equates to eating less and training more.  But does it in reality?  And how does that work in the athletic space when we need to perform well at a particular sport, or when you just really like lifting or performing at a high intensity and don’t want to go into that stressed state that we’ve talked about in so many other episodes.

Well I couldn’t think of anyone better to talk about this with than Libby Wescombe.

Libby is a Sydney-based Personal trainer, Nutritionist, CrossFit Coach and ex Cross Fit Athlete with over ten years experience working with female clients to achieve their fitness and nutrition goals. Libby is on a mission to bring back common sense in an industry full of hype and aims to help women break free from the confusion that keeps them stuck in an unhealthy way of thinking so they can live healthier, happier, freer lives.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Crossfit and the awesome foundation it gave Libby and how she works with high performance athletes.
  • The myth of paleo dieting and how it affects cross fitters
  • The myth of focusing on the number on the scale as a barometer of health
  • Shifting from focusing on weight to body composition
  • The importance of muscle mass and the myth of women getting huge
  • Why you need to log so your coach can get your baseline
  • How to “log” without logging
  • Why you need to understand macros
  • Are we actually over training?
  • Periodisation and the myth of always going hard or performing at high intensity
  • What actually happens when you lose weight
  • Why recovery is not just sleep and why its different for everyone
  • The importance of diet breaks and re-feeding
  • The myth of cardio being bad for you and how to work in the different energy systems and have a positive carry over to body composition
  • Building an aerobic base
  • Overcoming “exercise intolerance”
  • Why you put on weight when you change diets, especially going pro-metabolic
  • The importance of consistency
  • The problem with the caloric restriction we’re seeing in clients from sedentary to athletes
  • You can have it all, but not at the same time

If you got something out of the episode, I would love you to share your takeaways on instagram and tag me, @leilalutz and @libbywescombe and post in your stories.

I think the biggest myth in Personal Training or the exercise field is if I just turn up and sweat and do something that is exhausting, I will get the result of getting fitter, leaner, stronger, whatever it is that you desire.  Another one would be that if I just get my heart rate up I am going to be healthier and that people who do so are fit.

I am finding all too often now, when I'm working with clients who suffer from thyroid, adrenal, metabolic issues or even clients with injuries, that their personal trainer also bases their practice on this belief.

Well, today on the show is Ross Gilmour from Better Body Collective.  I had the pleasure of working with Ross on a client who was not having the ideal response that they should have been having. This was easily spotted by Ross because of his intricate training program and measurements of progress, success and recovery.  Now because he had so much data, he made my job super easy.  I think he also saved the client money, because I was not needed as much, plus together we did get them a result. So I invited him on the show to talk today about his methods and practice, which I think set a gold standard for Personal Training.

In this Episode we talk about:

  • Crossfit
  • HIIT
  • Steady State Cardio
  • Resistance training
  • Functional Training
  • Hypertrophy
  • Bodybuilding
  • The importance of program design
  • Progressive Overload
  • Dieting from a fed state vs an underfed state
  • Thyroid
  • Metabolism
  • Epigenetics
  • Stress
  • Ascertaining a clients’ goal
  • Creating an environment that supports the goal
  • When to refer out
  • Building a network of professionals
  • Collaborating as practitioners
  • Physiological/Allostatic Load

Ross Gilmouris available for training clients and mentoring personal trainers.  I encourage you to get in contact with him.  He also has his own podcast called Better Body Radio. You can find him on Instagram as @coachrossgilmour

05 Apr 2022The Myths of Back Pain with Donal Carr01:52:26

At the World Congress of Back Pain, it was said that nine in 10 people will have back pain at some point in their life.  Of course that will occur in varying degrees.  What I have seen a lot in my work, working with injuries as a CHEK practitioner, is that many people who have back injuries are given such a glass ceiling with their diagnosis and treatment options.  So if nine in 10 of us are going to experience back pain, what can we do about it?  For those who have it severely, what hope do we have?  Why is there such a high incidence of back pain? And just what is safe as you know so many people are told never to deadlift again.

Today, my guest is Donal Carr, Chek Faculty and CHEK Practitioner and wait for it, my first ever mentor in the fitness industry.  You see, almost 20 years ago, Donal Carr interviewed me to be accepted as a Personal Trainer and he was in fact the reason that I became a CHEK practitioner.

I have watched Donal rehabilitate some of the most complicated injuries over the years and it is my pleasure to have him here today on the show to discuss the Myths of Back Pain.

In the episode we discuss:

  • Different types of back injuries
  • Treatment options
  • Breath
  • Scar Tissue
  • Dietary links to back pain
  • Stress and emotional links to back pain
  • The gabp in rehabilitation
  • When are you really fully rehabilitated?
  • Infant Development
  • Program Design for Back Pain
  • Deadlifts and danger for disc injuries

16 Aug 2020Raising Independent Children with Ferne van Zyl01:41:19

Ferne van Zyl, owner of the Independent Child is sought after parenting coach.  She  has provided training and support for hundreds of families on setting up environments for independence, effective communication skills and practical strategies for dealing with challenging behaviour. In particular, her deep understanding, sense of humour, and ability to see opportunities and find solutions in just about any situation have seen her become highly sought after by parents who find themselves ‘stuck’ for ideas about how to deal with a particular issue.

Today we are talking about how we implement everything the other guests have been talking about in terms of parenting.  How do we parent so our children can grow up authentically themselves and in touch with their emotions so they can be independent?  How do we create healthy boundaries so that we can have space and time ourselves and a role model to our children? Well, I honestly do think that Ferne has all the answers.

We talk about:

  • What is an independent child?
  • Good and Bad and Punish and Reward model
  • Where does judgment come from?
  • How do we instill intrinsic values and motivation as opposed to extrinsic rewards
  • Teaching self regulation and looking after their body.
  • Regulating our emotions especially anger and other “negative” emotions
  • Why we have to stop asking why.
  • Dealing with tantrums
  • How we usually act out of our emotions as opposed to responding with what is necessary
  • How us authentically expressing our emotions to our children teaches them to be emotionally intelligent and resilient and how to do it
  • How we should have authentic arguments with our partners for the sake of our children
  • How freedom and limits lead to positive self discipline that in turn affects others

07 Jun 2022The Long Way Home with Amy Kate Bowe01:26:26

We’re going a bit off the topic of myths this week, because so many of you have been asking me, in terms of fitness, health and recovery, what is the long way home?  What does that really mean?  And I get that, because a goal needs to be Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely otherwise it's just this obscure, arbitrary, vast unattainable thing way out in some time in the future, maybe never.

My guest today, Amy Kate Bowe is a Strength and Conditioning Coach who was once like me and many of my clients, followers and listeners.  She found herself at the bottom of the pit and had to get back up.  You might see her on instagram doing all these completely amazing things with her body.  Hanging, rope climbing, handstands, beautiful clean and snatches and with this beautiful athletic body, but one day she got injured and she had to start all the way from the bottom.  What happened to her was not able to be overcome in a 12 week transformation or by setting an aesthetic goal. She had to take the long road home.

Now in her Warrior School, she coaches women all over the world, to do just that.  I have had the pleasure of working alongside Amy with some of her clients and I have seen first hand, their leaps and bounds forward in not just making aesthetic changes to their bodies, but first and foremost increasing their capability, capacity and performance for life, like no other.

In this episode, we discuss.

  • Building a strong body from the ground up
  • The short way home vs the long road home.
  • A little bit about both our journeys to recovery.
  • Stepping outside the Aesthetic
  • Its ok to have aesthetic goals
  • Aesthetics Vs Performance
  • Functional Movement
  • Technique
  • Owning the Movement
  • Cardio vs Strength
  • What we see on insta vs real life
  • Realistic training for Mums, exercise intolerant and busy women.

You can find Amy Kate Bowe on instagram as @amykatebowe

I encourage you to listen to her podcast The Warrior School Podcast where you can here the facets of the Long Road Home broken down into bite size pieces as well as a multitude of tips and knowledge for your strength training.

27 Jun 2022Recovering from the Trauma of Disease with Theresa Piela01:42:15

I have worked with many people with chronic health issues that have had a huge impact on their life in a negative way.  Their illness, disease, lack of function has meant that they have had to miss out on their life in some way or meant they could not participate in life in the way that they wanted to.  From being in chronic pain and unable to sit at a desk to work, to having chronic fatigue and being unable to get through the day. Many of them will tell me that they do not know who they are anymore and that they are but a shadow of their former self.

Along with that comes a lot of feelings of despair, unfairness, hopelessness and a lot of time searching for the root cause or the next protocol to heal them.

Of course I have felt like this too and so this episode is very personal to me.

To get better, from whatever we want to, we have to find a place in our mind to get us into a different state.  We have to flip a bit of a switch from despair into a place of hope, so that we can take action.  And not the action of spending more time on google trying to find a solution, but the action of being a part of our life.

Theresa Piela is an independent health researcher and brain rewiring coach. Theresa focuses on supporting the most complicated cases with “chronic illness” & trauma patterns that may have lost hope and the ability to connect to joy, as a result of their conditions.

I am super excited to have Theresa on the show today for a few reasons.  She has profoundly changed the life of a dear friend of mine, Kitty Blomfield, with her work; She has some tools that I don’t use with my clients but have always been super curious about because I have seen the benefits of them in clients; AND she and I both recovered from mold illness.

In this episode Theresa is so kind as to do a demonstration so that you can have something to help shift out of that state straight away.  We have put together a video for you, so you can see it and you can find that video here:

You can find Theresa Piela on instagram as @livingrootswellness She also has an app, Tapping with T.  Her website is www.livingrootswellness.com

Theresa and I would love to know if you got something out of this episode.  Please let us know by sharing on instagram and tagging us in your stories.
