The Blue-White Podcast: A Penn State Athletics Podcast (Blue White Illustrated)

Penn State hosted various players over the weekend during its second junior day. Several interesting names were on hand despite lacking a depth of high-end recruits showing up on campus. With that in mind, Greg Pickel of Blue White Illustrated joins the Daily Edition to discuss those that stood out. 

They start with one of the most important names of the weekend, Cornell offensive lineman Hunter Nourzad. While he's not a prospect in the traditional sense, Penn State is recruiting him hard out of the transfer portal. He visited the Nittany Lions this weekend, and Pickel has his thoughts on the situation.  

The next player that stood out to Pickel was Georiga native Dee Crayton. Pickel shares some of what the four-star linebacker prospect had to say after his visit. Crayton was impressed by several aspects of the weekend, which should bode well for Penn State. Pickel then points out an interesting part of Crayton's recruitment that will be worth monitoring going forward. 

The next topic they discuss deals with recruiting, but not junior day. Four-star offensive lineman Jven Williams updated his recruitment, which Pickel details on the show. They also talk about his importance to the in-state recruiting effort and where Penn State might stand in Williams' pecking order of schools. They also explain how On3's RPM, or Recruiting Prediction Machine, works and why the Nittany Lions are a favorite right now. Finally, there are key events that fans should know about that shape the recruiting process, which are a factor in the prediction. 

The final piece of recruiting news they discuss is Dani Dennis-Sutton's ranking for On3. On3's recruiting expert Charles Power gave Dennis-Sutton his fifth star this week, making it three for Penn State in the Class of 2023. Pickel and T-Frank discuss Dennis-Sutton's senior year and some of the factors that led to his late rise up the rankings. 

Finally, Pickel fills T-Frank in on the Penn State wrestling team's exploits over the weekend. The Nittany Lions dominated third-ranked Michigan and then took care of business against Michigan State on Sunday, sweeping their road schedule this past weekend. Who stood out? Why did Penn State handle Michigan in such a fashion? 

First, they discuss those topics and then comment on how dangerous head coach Cael Sanderson's squad is after the intermission. Next, they discuss some critical moments of the weekend and then look at the team with a big-picture view. 

Lastly, Pickel gives fans a heads up on what's coming up from the team and him this week. 

Penn State football is still searching for several important pieces for the class of 2023, but with football season drawing closer, those conversations may be on hold for the moment. News surfaced yesterday that may benefit Penn State football dramatically. The Nittany Lions are stuck in the toughest division in college football. But reports this week by The Athletic suggest that the conference is considering doing away with divisions entirely. Is that a good idea? Senior Editor Nate Bauer joins the BWI Daily Edition to talk about that and more.

He and host Thomas Frank Carr start with Bauer's article yesterday on realignment. On top of the Big Ten ramifications, the conference is also considering dropping a conference game and adding in a scheduled ACC and PAC 12 game each year. How would that work? They talk about the realities of the college football landscape, what the future holds for college sports, and how football and basketball are driving change that replaces old notions.

Their focus is obviously on how Penn State can benefit from this change and how tenuous the future is for conferences that want to play by old rules. They discuss the role television plays for game selection and how organizations that think outside the box have an advantage. Finally, T-Frank asks how far away these potential changes are and when fans might see a positive or negative effect from said changes.

Next, they take questions from viewers of the show. Questions each Thursday are solicited from either the Lions Den message forum or Twitter.

They start with a question about special teams and how it might change with the loss of several key players and coaches on Penn State's third unit this offseason. Can Penn State rebound? Nate and T-Frank discuss.

Penn State fans have been saving up questions like Christmas presents. Today, T-Frank steps in for Nate Bauer, who is under the weather, to join Sean Fitz on the BWI Daily Mailbag show.

There were several notable Penn State recruiting prospects at the Under Armour camp in Baltimore on Sunday, and the BWI Daily Recruiting show was there to see them perform. Host Greg Pickel and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder was on-hand to see the Class of 2023 and beyond test and compete during the final weekend of March. So, they'll tell you the major news and observations that came out of the event on the show. 

They start with four-star linebacker Tony Rojas. He delivered some significant and rare news to Snyder on Sunday, which Snyder retells on the show. Next, they discuss the top schools in Rojas's recruitment and then give their thoughts on how he looked and performed at the camp. 

After that, Snyder breaks down what he saw from players positionally, starting with quarterbacks. The first two quarterbacks he mentions are Stone Saunders from Bishop McDevitt and Michael Van Buren from St. Frances Academy. So what did he see from them on a windy day? Next, Snyder explains how the weather hindered the camp, especially for the passing game. Finally, Pickel calls into question how useful recruiting camps are for evaluating quarterbacks. 

After discussing the tight ends and receivers at the camp, Pickel follows up with his thoughts on Penn State offensive line commit Anthony Donkoh's day. It was the first chance to see the four-star lineman up close for both Snyder and Pickel, who were impressed with how Donkoh rebounded from a slower start to the day. Next, Snyder explains where Penn State hopes that the Virginia native fits into their recruiting class. 

The most important and loaded group of the day was the defensive line. It's a stacked group in the region for the Class of 2023 and 2024, so Snyder goes through the names in the group, which includes edge Desmond Umeozulu, stand out defensive tackle of the day Sydir Mitchell, Congo native Joseph Mupoyi, and 2024 edge Dominic Nichols just to name a few. 

They filter through the other important Penn State targets that were on hand Sunday before getting to the other important news of the weekend. Four-star athlete Neeo Avery de-committed from the university on Sunday and was on hand to explain his decision to Pickel. Snyder and Pickel go through what happened and what comes next for Penn State and Avery. 

Finally, they discuss the players visiting Penn State over the last three days. Van Buren made his way to Happy Valley before camp, as did 2023 DB Amare Snowden. Monday, Tennessee native and four-star receiver Justin Brown made his way to campus. Lastly, Snyder runs down the newest commitments that the Nittany Lions sent out over the last few days.

The Penn State football team fired offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich on Sunday after the team's 24-15 loss to Michigan at home. On today's BWI Live show, we discuss what happened on the field that led to that decision. We'll take you through the game plan against Michigan, some of the major sticking points for the offense and what head coach James Franklin had to say about the matter.

Game Day execution a big sticking point for Penn State staff

The Penn State offense developed a plan each week of how they were going to attack the opposing offense. But, accoring to Franklin, that plan didn't get executed correctly each week. When asked to clarify what he meant about getting quarterback Drew Allar into a rhythm early, Franklin said it was more than just that.

"As you can imagine, I have conversations about all the things I have concerns about, and more so than I speak in the press conferences.

"I think you guys have heard me come in and talk, whether it's openers, third down, starting fast, all these things are things that we've had lengthy discussions about and had a plan for, but a lot of the times when we got to the games, either we did not call the games that way or we did not execute the games the way we intended them to."

Those things were asked for."

We'll discuss how the Michigan game was a terrible example of getting Allar into rhythm and how Yurcich took what the defense gave him to the detriment of his passing game.

Penn State running game

There was a viral clip of Penn State running back Nick Singleton missing a potential touchdown run on the Nittany Lion's drive that led to a field goal. We'll discuss how that play is a microcosm of how Singleton is performing this year and what factors led to him not taking the cutback lane for a touchdown. It's a systmatic issue for Penn State who aren't putting their players in the best position to succeed.

Penn State scheme could help mitigate the loss of Olu Fashanu

Earlier this week, we discussed the concept of working around the team's new tackle situation with first-time starters Drew Shelton and Anthony Donkoh or Nolan Rucci by leaning into what Kotelnicki did best at Kansas: run the football. Successfully deploying the ground game keeps the team out of obvious passing situations, which was the strength of Fashanu.

But what if you didn’t need those skills the same way? We’ve talked about this previously, but true passing situation opportunities can heavily influence the perception of a player’s skills. Last year, Fashanu saw 142 of PFF’s true passing situation blocks in Penn State’s run-first scheme, which equated to 57th among all Power Five tackles.

But Kansas had even fewer of those plays. Kansas left tackle Dominic Puni played in as many games as Fashanu and only had to block 86 times in obvious passing situations, which is tied for 122nd.

Penn State football came out after a crushing defeat to Michigan in a big way. They dominated Minnesota in a blowout win during the 2022 White Out Game. Despite moving the ball in the second quarter, Penn State went into halftime with a 17-10 lead. Minnesota scored a quick touchdown before the half and then got the ball to start the third quarter. 

Unfortunately for the gophers, that was as close as it would get. Penn State scored 21 points in the third quarter and raced out to a 38-10 lead to start the final frame. 

The offensive resurgence was led by quarterback Sean Clifford, who played the game of his life in front of 107 thousand fans. The senior quarterback rallied from an ugly interception in the first quarter to throw for 295 yards and four touchdowns, completing 74% of his passes. 

Offensive coordinator Mike Yurich finally cracked the code for using tight ends. As a result, the offense went to the position early and often. Theo Johnson and Tyler Warren caught 25-plus-yard touchdown passes and were a nightmare all night in the middle of the field. 

Penn State avenges its first loss of the season in a big way. Find out how they did it on the BWI Live postgame show following the conclusion of Penn State vs. Minnesota. 

Penn State wrestler Terrell Barraclough has entered the NCAA transfer portal, a source confirmed to Blue-White Illustrated. The Wrestling Room founder Pat Mineo first reported the news. Barraclough, who is from Kaysville, Utah, is in as a graduate transfer. He has one season of eligibility remaining.

Barraclough’s decision to move on is not a shock. He has been a tremendous teammate while operating mostly in a backup capacity during his time in blue and white. He was 12-2 in 2023-2024 but competed in just three dual meets, where he was 2-1. Throughout his time at Penn State, he has been flexible with his weight, filling in at both 165 and 174 pounds when needed. His most dual meet matches in one year came in 2021-2022, when he was in seven of them and went 7-8 on the year including a near upset of Nebraska star Peyton Robb.

Barraclough is the first Penn State wrestler to hit the portal since the 2023-2024 season ended. He may not be the last. Wrestlers have until May 3 to enter the portal and still be eligible next season.

Penn State vs. Indiana Preview

With the Nittany Lion's struggles on offense last week, we'll focus mainly on the offense and how things can improve on that side of the ball. The defense allowed only 20 points to one of the most dangerous teams in the country, so we'll discuss them, but the spotlight will be on Drew Allar and his teammates.

Most importantly, can Penn State regain their identity? Head coach James Franklin thinks they got away from it last week.

"Yeah, I think we talked about staying true to our identity, and I thought we got a little bit away from that at times."

"Somebody asked me earlier about our goal line package that we've been using, the three running backs and things like that that have been very successful in short yardage. We kind of got away from that."

While Franklin acknowledged that the team's identity is grounded in the run game, his main point was that they are an efficient team.

"I thought our identity was staying on schedule converting on third downs and then either converting on third downs or going for it on fourth down situations. I feel like that had been our identity for the season," Franklin said

"We have a lot of respect for their short-yardage defense and how they were defending it, but we did not do that. We did not either convert on third downs like we had been doing or put us in a situation where we were in fourth and short to go for it."

The Penn State Football team made a distinct shift since offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich was let go in the middle of November. The team made sublte changes over the last month that culminated in the team's approach in the 2023 Peach Bowl.

While new offensive coordiantors Ja'Juan Seider and Ty Howle didn't change many plays, they did change some key elements of the offense that we'll discuss on today's BWI Live Show. Who is seeing the offensive targets changed took an even more dramatic shift at the end of December, which we'll explain today. We'll also discuss how that shift narrowed the focus of the offensive attack in a way that made things harder for quarterback Drew Allar.

Finally, we'll discuss the team's defensive mentality after the first drive. We'll look into how the team performed to understand if there was an impact of former Penn State defensive coordinator Manny Diaz's absence.

Penn State defense set up to fail

There's no doubt that Penn State's loss of it's top two corners and best defensive player in Kalen King, Johnny Dixon and Chop Robinson. We break down how losing Dixon and King affected the Penn State defense's schematic choices. From there, we'll discuss how Abdul Carter's injury further drove a nail in the coffin of Penn State's defensive efforts.

Next, we'll highlight the players who did a good job despite giving up over 500 yards of offense to Ole Miss. Did Cam Miller and Zion Tracy show anything on film that should make fans feel better about the day they had covered Ole Miss' receivers? We'll also discuss how Abdul Carter was playing before his injury in the second quarter.

Passing attack has issues before third quarter

Why didn't Penn State get the ball to running back Nick Singleton more on Saturday? We'll detail how the game flow radically altered the plan in the second half. Then we'll discuss the day that the offensive line had in pass protection of quarterback Drew Allar.

While it's easy to point to the general dysfunction of the Penn State offense on Saturday, Allar does share in the blame for the performance. We'll take you through some of the issues hidden behind his decisions to check the ball down or scramble. We'll talk about how Allar suffered from some of the issues he seemingly overcame at the end of the season before regressing this past weekend.

Friday is an important day on the Penn State recruiting calendar. Four-star linebacker from Pittsburgh, Ta'Mere Robinson, makes his college decision between Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Miami shortly after 6:15. How will that decision play out? Recruiting reporter Greg Pickel and host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, preview the evening's event. 

First, however, they start with a recap of Tony Rojas' decision to join Penn State one day prior. A fellow four-star linebacker, Rojas chose Penn State over similar schools. So how significant was his recruitment? Pickel and T-Frank discuss. 

Next, they get into Robinson's preview and explain how confident Penn State fans should be in the outcome later in the evening. 

From there, T-Frank asks Greg to give him the short-list of players he'd choose to pursue for Penn State if he were in charge of recruiting. He mentions the most elusive prospect this month, offensive lineman Evan Link, who has gone silent in communication with media and coaches, according to Pickel. He also birngs up Virginia linebacker Kevion Keys and receiver Carmelo Taylor. 

T-Frank follows up that list by asking if Pickel thinks it's wise to hold off on taking a wide receiver in case the Nittany Lions can flip a commitment from a higher-ranked recruit. Both Pittsburgh-area receiver Rodney Gallagher and top-150 athlete Cameron Seldon are players that T-Frank would target first. 

Lastly, T-Frank brings up a question from Thursday's BWI Daily Mailbag show for Pickel to answer. A Lions Den member wants to know if four-star offensive lineman Alex Birchmeier will get a fifth-star from On3 and if any players in the class will jump from three to four-star profiles. Pickel chooses receiver Yazeed Haynes and explains why. 

Next, they shift their focus to Penn State wrestling. Head coach Cael Sanderson received a new contract this offseason. How does that impact the program's stability? How dominant can they become in the future? And how doe NIL add to that already sizable lead? Pickel and T-Frank discuss that at length before turning the conversation to NIL at Penn State and the lack of enthusiasm to contribute to football. 

From there, they take a quick look at the 2022 Nittany Lions for a preview of the season. Which underclassmen will take a step forward and jump up the depth chart? T-Frank and Greg give their thoughts. 

Finally, they close out the show discussing Bo Nickal's MMA career and a big moment coming up in the near future.

Penn State takes on Delaware at noon for its second game of the 2023 season. While fans may not feel the same juice as the opening game, which was a primetime stripe-out, it's an important part of the calendar for the Nittany Lions. Can they get better this week and improve on the mistakes they made in the prior game?

We're breaking it down into five things you should watch for in the game to see if the offense and defense made the corrections they needed to from the previous week.

We'll take you through some hidden areas that West Virginia attacked during the opening game, critical corrections for the offense and defense, and which players should dominate in the matchup against the Fighting Blue Hens.

Penn State Five Things:

The first area we'll start with is the defense. Last week the unit played well in critical moments, as head coach James Franklin explained in his Tuesday press conference.

"I thought defensively what stood out to me is we played our best when it was needed most. There's some things that we've got to get cleaned up for sure. But when we needed to make plays on defense, we did. That was important," Franklin said.

We'll highlight the areas where Franklin wants his team to improve.

The next area on our countdown is the offensive line. The group, along with the running backs, was efficient and gained good yardage on each play, but one area still bothers the group up front. We'll dive into the numbers of where and how the Penn State offensive line gave up pressure.

Does West Virginia set a template?

The Mountaineers had a sneaky-good idea for attacking Penn State's third-down defense. Is this an area other teams will exploit? We're not expecting Delaware to try the same plan of attack, but we'll explain how Penn State's vaunted Prowler defense was put on the defensive during the game last Saturday.

From there, we'll dig into how the defense can improve and clean up their play from the previous week. It's not as drastic as some fans think, but there are corrections the team needs to make to be ready for Big Ten play.

Lastly, we'll look at the position group that we think will impact the game this weekend. Find out why Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen need to lead the way for the offense on Saturday.

The Penn State football team takes on UMass Saturday for its final non-conference game of the season. While no one expects this to be a challenging game for the Nittany Lions, it's important to examine how the team can prepare for the second half of its season with this contest. Today on the BWI Live show, we'll examine five things we're looking for when Penn State takes the field against UMass.

Penn State getting its groove back

The Penn State running game is productive but hasn't had the feel-good plays they wanted this season. Despite that, running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider is happy with how his tandem of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen have played so far this year.

"I really like where we're at. Contrary to belief, we run the ball effectively. We haven't had a long runs. Everybody knows that. But if you watch the film, you watch the defense the week before they play us, and the week when they play us, we are getting different defenses every week," Seider said.

However, we'll discuss what head coach James Franklin said earlier in the week about how great running backs can get off their groove. Does Penn State need to re-establish that?

We'll check in with Seider, who again puts that on the coaches and the defenses paying extra attention to his dynamic duo.

"Well, I mean, talking about instincts, I think a lot of that is on us as coaches, being able to get back to who we are in our running style and what plays we want to carry out the week. You know, we probably added some stuff in there that we wish, as a coach, you wish you'd maybe take back and get back to our fundamentals. But it's also a defense a lot of time, dictate what type of scheme we run throughout the week."

UMass making things happen for both sides of the ball

We discussed earlier in the week that UMass's offense is explosive but plays with a risk-reward style. We'll dive into some numbers that illustrate what kind of day it will be for the defense if they can be opportunistic with their chances.

Next, we'll examine how the UMass defense plays and how it might be tailor-made to get Penn State's struggling passing game back on track this week.

We'll also discuss the team superlatives for this group. Which players have the most upside? Which players are the most underated? How about the players who were the biggest surprise additions to the class? Snyder will give out his awards during the middle porition of the show. 

But no class is complete and there are always misses along the way. Which ones will sting Penn State the most when looking back at this group in the following years? We'll discuss that, and then end on a positive note with the biggest hits among the group.

Penn State Football Signing Day Special

Penn State football has been a .500 team with embattled quarterback Sean Clifford at the helm for the past two seasons. However, many fans are frustrated that Clifford is the presumed starter heading into next Fall. So the host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, is endeavoring to find out how the Nittany Lions can be successful next season by looking to the past. He’s examining the 2019 Penn State football team through PFF data to determine what they did to win ten games and threaten a College Football Playoff spot. 

The key to winning is surrounding quarterback Sean Clifford with a team that can help shoulder the load. Of course, a critical part of any winning team is a solid defense, and today, T-Frank looks at that side of the ball. 

However, it’s not a clean translation since the departure of former defensive coordinator Brent Pry. So while T-Frank starts in 2019 to give a sense of what that team was like, he quickly transitions to what Manny Diaz did at his zenith in Maimi. That means he looks instead to the 2018 Miami Hurricanes and the DNA of that defense under Diaz. T-Frank looks at the main features of the defense, critical stats, and overall team production to find common threads.

The Penn State football team heads into their final week of spring practice, and the BWI Daily Edition is here to get you ready. Host Thomas Frank Carr looks at the 2022 Blue White game, the first in two years, to give you a sense of what to expect on Saturday.

T-Frank starts with the Penn State offensive line and how things have gone so far this spring for the Nittany Lions. Then, he plays clips from head coach James Franklin to explain how that group will affect what you see on the field in Beaver Stadium this weekend. To illustrate the problem, T-Frank shows viewers the depth chart at the start of spring practice. Penn State had been very thin at the position before injuries started mounting this year. Without knowing which players have been missing and what amount of time they've missed, he explains the problem broadly.

Next, he brings up the issue of installing and refining the offense under second-year coordinator Mike Yurcich. While most fans and media focus on the quarterback's mastery of the scheme, how is the rest of the offense? Specifically, what about the offensive line? With players missing time and depth scarce, has that helped the available players get more reps? Or has it hurt the unit to be down in functionality? T-Frank asked Franklin last week, and he plays Franklin's answer.

The following conversation springing from Franklin's answer is about the rest of the offense. Can they effectively pick things up with the line struggling to field a complete unit? Does the defense get quality work going against them? Next, t-Frank dives into one specific aspect of the offense, helped by Yurcich's comments about trying to improve the team's deep passing game a year ago. He explains how important each rep is and why the team has worked hard to make things normal this spring.

Lastly, he gets into what fans should expect out of the game on Saturday.

However, T-Frank points out a fact about both young quarterbacks that should help them play above their second-year status. 

Next, they discuss the offensive line. Just how good can this until be if fully healthy? Can they be a top five or ten unit in the country? T-Frank is still determining if he's ready to say that, but Pickel is bolder. They're discussing the potential of the offensive line with returning star Olu Fashanu at left tackle, Landon Tengwall at left guard, Hunter Nourzad at center, Saleem Worley at right guard, and Caedan Wallace at right tackle. 

But will that be the lineup? The line's interior had a shaky season last year with extensive injuries and some struggles from Wormley at right guard. Next, they discuss the reality of what Penn State faces heading into the spring.

Penn State football kicked off the 2023 season and didn't disappoint. The Nittany Lions defeated the West Virginia Mountaineers on the arm of new starting quarterback Drew Allar. Join the BWI Live Postgame Show to discuss the season-opening win for head coach James Franklin and his team.

Penn State leans on young QB in primetime win

Penn State entered halftime up 14-7 but the Nittany Lions drove down into the redzone twice and came away with zero points due to missed field goals from Sander Sahaydak, who lost his job at halftime to transfer kicker Alex Felkins. 

Despite the fanfare of Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen coming into the game, Allar was the star. The first-time starter showed great poise and vision during his debute, completing over 70% of his passes on the night. Allar finished the game with 325 yards and three touchdowns. But Allar didn't compile short passes to get his yards. He averaged 15.5 yards per completion, pushing the ball downfield. 

On the other hand, the offensive run game played the efficient supporting role against the Mountaineer defense. Allen and Singleton combined for 121 yards and a touchdown on 23 combined carries. The offensive line opened impressive holes and put in a positive effort to start the season.

Defense gets off to shaky start, rights the ship

The Penn State defense, a highly-touted group of playmakers, got off to a rocky start. The defense only gave up seven points by halftime but gave up 69 yards in the first two quarters. West Virginia was also aggressive on the night, going for five fourth downs during the competitive portion of the game and making two short conversions.

Penn State practice preview

It's an important week to gauge Penn State's health heading into the game of the year for the Nittany Lions. The team holds open practice on Wednesday night and we'll preview what we're looking forward to learning and what Penn State head coach James Franklin might say about his team's progress through the week. It's not just Penn State that is dealing with a rash of injuries. The Buckeyes are also dealing with problems at key spots including left tackle and safety. Reporter Greg Pickel discusses what he learned this week from Ohio State's media availability.

Penn State's tight end recruiting in the 2023 class is nothing short of excellent. At one time, the Nittany Lions had four four-star players cycle through the room, with Mathias Barnwell, Neeo Avery, and Joey Schlaffer as the first three. But the last addition, Andrew Rappleyea, may yield the most results the earliest. Rappleyea sits down with Blue White Illustrated's Sean Fitz in an exclusive interview to discuss his transition to college, his comparisons to former New England prospect Pat Freiermuth, and his desire to play early in his career.

Fitz starts the interview by asking Rappleyea to chronicle his journey to Penn State, starting with how he landed at Milton Academy in New England. Rappleyea takes Fitz through his journey from an under-recruited part of the country, through COVID, to his destination at Milton. He also describes when the light came on for him as a recruit and when he started to take football seriously. 

The switch to his new school opened up his recruitment and launched him from an unheard-of prospect to one of the top tight ends in the country. Rappleyea and Fitz talk about that journey from Rappleyea's perspective and how it made him a more confident person. 

Next, they discuss his game and what sort of things he can do on the football field. The Millbrook, NY native discusses what he does to train, how he embraced the weight room and how that has changed his prospects. All that training and confidence makes Rappleyea not only believe that he can play early in his career but already knows which tight end position he wants to play and is embracing that role. 

Blue White Illustrated senior editor Nate Bauer and host Thomas Frank Carr take questions from the audience for their weekly mailbag show. Today they discuss the name image and likeness questions submitted by message board members at bluewhiteillustrated.com. In this video, both questions deal with NIL. 

First, the duo is asked which unexpected Big Ten school might compete with Ohio State atop the Big Ten in terms of NIL money spent. Bauer suggests that Michigan State and head coach Mel Tucker as the team to keep an eye on. Next, T-Frank brings up Maryland as a school with possible ties to large donors that can make waves. 

From there, they discuss the current ruleless landscape of college football with NIL. The viewer wants to know what conference or governing body can pass rules to reign the spending and even the playing field for each school. Both men agree that the US Congress will have to step in and make a ruling about the situation. If they were to do that, it would likely lead to an NFL-like model in college sports, complete with a labor union and a salary cap. The only way around the issue would be through anti-trust laws and legislation. 

Penn State recruiting enters the first big official visit weekend of the summer today. Recruiting insider Ryan Snyder joins the BWI Daily Edition to preview the weekend's events, including a seven-on-seven tournament and a prospect camp. He and host Thomas Frank Carr take you through the names and events you need to know.

T-Frank and Snyder start with Penn State's seven-on-seven tournament they're hosting Friday morning at the Penn State football complex. Next, Snyder breaks down the top schools in attendance at the event and the notable players from each institution. After that, T-Frank digs into the nature of tournaments like this and what added benefits they can provide the Penn State coaching staff beyond talent evaluation. Finally, Snyder explains the broader seven-on-seven landscape.

Next, they get into the weekend's biggest event, official visits. Eight uncommitted prospects for the Class of 2023 visit campus this weekend, starting on Friday. Check out the complete list in his notebook from earlier this week.

From that list, T-Frank picks several intriguing players he wants to learn more about from Snyder. For example, where does three-star defensive tackle Tyriq Blanding fit into the defensive tackle board? Will high-priority tackle prospect Evan Link commit after this weekend? And who else is in the picture for Alabama safety Dakaari Nelson?

Lastly, Snyder updates the linebacker situation in the Class of 2023. Penn State's top two targets, Tony Rojas and Ta'Mere Robinson, are seemingly going in different directions. Despite the murky outlook, Snyder tries to shed as much light on the subject as possible.

Today, host Thomas Frank Carr is joined by senior editor Nate Bauer to discuss the game. While the quarterbacks dominated the discussion postgame, T-Frank puts his foot down and opens the show with a discussion of the Penn State defense. Manny Diaz's defense put on another show Saturday, blanking Maryland and quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa. Bauer describes how they did it by discussing what happened on first and second down during the first half and the majority of the second. Meanwhile, T-Frank comments on how Penn State learned lessons from earlier in the season and applied them to this game. In all, it was a dominating performance at every level of the defense. 

Next, they flip the script and look at the Maryland offense. T-Frank discusses his continued surprise at the poor play from Tagovailoa and his performance. Despite laying out the issues that Maryland presented, T-Frank expected more from the offense. They also paint a bright future for the Penn State defense with the number of young players that are playing at an exceptionally high level.

Next, they shift to the offense and discuss the quarterback situation. They spend a lengthy time discussing when to play and when not to play freshman Drew Allar. While both disagree with his usage on Saturday, they try putting the situation into perspective. T-Frank also gives an evaluation of how Allar played when he did see the field. Meanwhile, Bauer juxtaposes head coach James Franklin's "bold and aggressive" mentality with his decisions surrounding the quarterback. 

Finally, T-Frank and Bauer discuss running back Nick Singleton and what his performance on Saturday means for his Penn State career. The duo agrees that Singleton's abilities took a leap in this game, describing his journey to get there and how he's progressed. 

Lastly, they wrap up the show by giving parting thoughts about Allar and how much experience he's gotten this season. Bauer compares that to what starter Sean Clifford received his first season and how much that can help him in the future. T-Frank adds on by saying it's okay if the young player doesn't excel every time he steps on the field.

Today’s show is based off of the offensive and defensive scouting articles from earlier this week at Blue White Illustrated. We’ll pull critical information about how Michigan likes to operate and how Penn State can attack those processes on either side of the ball. Here’s an excerpt from that premium content.

The threat of the running game and Michigan’s mystique as a run-first team have opened up some explosive options in the passing game. Most of the Michigan offense is vertical-based. MCcarthy’s arm strength and velocity on the ball come in handy in this over-the-top passing scheme. His average depth of target is 10.6 yards downfield, which is third in the Big Ten. While McCarthy isn’t chucking the ball deep as much as other quarterbacks, he’s shockingly far ahead in completion percentage.

Lions offensive line presents a new challenge for Michigan

The Penn State offensive line will be one of Michigan's best this year.

While the run-blocking grade doesn’t consider the scheme, situation, or any other context, it’s a broad gauge to show that this is the best offensive line that Michigan has faced this year. It’s also true to point out that Michigan has seen 224 run snaps in 2023. That’s the third-fewest among Big Ten teams.

Penn State pass game grows up

After a late-game surge that helped the Nittany Lions defeat Indiana, Allar picked up right where he left off. The 6-5 passer looked calm and poised in the pocket against Maryland. That confidence resulted in three first-half touchdowns for the Nittany Lions. Allar completed 76% of his passes in the first half, and the offense converted 80% of its first downs on the way to 21 first-half points.

Penn State head coach James Franklin has been happy with the way his young quarterback has progressed this season but was still looking for more heading into this matchup.

"I'm pleased with how it's going, but there is obviously a lot of room for growth there, not just specifically with him, but the pieces around him as well."

"The last thing I'll say, because we've talked about this a lot, is I also think the explosive plays help. You know, when you're able to complete a ball like we did with KeAndre, the more times you can put that on tape, that affects the defense very similar to a mobile quarterback."

Penn State completed those explosive plays against the Maryland defense and got support from players not named KeAndre Lambert-Smith. Receiver Dante Cephas had a breakout performance in the win with his most yards and catches of the season. Cephas had two touchdowns on the day and six catches for 53 yards.

Defense rebounds for lights-out performance

Aside from one drive, aided by a roughing of the punter penalty, the Penn State defense locked down the Maryland offense. Yes, Taulia Tagovailoa started the game 17-17, but the defense also sacked the Maryland quarterback four times.

Also, halftime was good for the Nittany Lion's defense again, who shut out another opponent in the third quarter. Penn State allowed -51 yards rushing through three quarters and allowed only 15 yards in the third frame.

Penn State defensive adjustments a work in progress

While Penn State fans are excited about Abdul Carter’s move to defensive end, the team still needs to sort out details about the move. Head coach James Franklin preached caution about the move being a slam-dunk positive for everyone involved this spring.

“Moving Abdul to defensive end, everybody’s excited about but it has an impact on our linebacker room, too,” he said last week.

We discuss the issues that moving Carter created for the team’s linebackers and what that group needs to do to make up for the loss of an impact player at the position. Franklin thinks that it will take time beyond spring football.

“So hopefully, they’ll finish out the spring on a real positive and have a really good spring game and go into the summer with some confidence,” Franklin said. “And then again, a couple of weeks into summer camp, feeling like we have depth there. Because right now, ‘we’ve got to create some more depth there to feel good about.”

Jaxon Smolik injury puts a new spotlight on Ethan Grunkemeyer

Penn State's coaching staff is out on the road recruiting this week and next. Locking up the majority of those who have already committed remains their key focus, but with coaching changes happening across the country, that could have an impact on any potential additions down the stretch.

Of course, the Nittany Lions already lost a key member of their staff, too. On Tuesday it was announced that defensive coordinator Brent Pry would become the new head coach at Virginia Tech, which means Franklin has to replace a very important member of his staff now.

On Tuesday's episode of the Blue White Illustrated recruiting podcast, Greg Pickel and Ryan Snyder get into the impact of Pry leaving and what it may mean moving forward. Pry has already made two hires for his staff at Tech, which could provide some insight on who he'll target, if anyone, from Penn State's staff.

Penn State also lost a member of its 2022 class on Tuesday in offensive lineman Spencer Rolland. Ryan and Greg discuss the impact of that decision and how his scholarship could potentially be used elsewhere. With 25 high school players still committed, potential outgoings from Penn State's roster will have a big impact.

They wrap up the show then with some of the more interesting visits that Penn State has done over the past couple of days. DT Zane Durant was one of the first visits they took after the contact period began on Sunday. They get into the implications of that, plus some notable players that Mike Yurcich is planning to see.

Fitz's recruiting update

Penn State football used the bye week to do some traveling and recruiting, which our reporters documented this weekend. BWI recruiting expert Sean Fitz will discuss Franklin's travels and which stops are meaningful. 

The On300 update for the Class of 2025 dropped yesterday and several Penn State prospects made moves in the rankings for the top 300 players. Fitz will discuss what's important to know and where you can find more information. We'll also preview his deep dive into offensive lineman Michael Troutman. Troutman is a little-discussed commit in the Class of 2025 that Fitz will educate fans about on today's show. 

Between the Lines

Franklin spoke with reporters for roughly 40 minutes on Monday to kick off the team's game week against Kent State. Our Penn State reporters were there and will discuss the meaning behind some of Franklin's most interesting answers. What's the injury status of KJ Winston? Is Franklin more open about injuries this year? We'll dive into those topic and more.

The dust has settled since national signing day, and Penn State's Class of 2023 is mostly situated heading into the traditional signing period in February. Today on the BWI Daily Recruiting Show, insiders Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz will discuss the important names and positions to know for the final phase of 2023 and then take the first official look at 2024. They start with the biggest news coming out of the weekend. Penn State has secured an official visit for one key recruit left in the 2023 cycle. Fitz discusses which player will meet with Penn State before national signing day in February. Next, Snyder discusses why he's hesitant to put too much stock in official visit plans before the new year has started. They discuss how hard it is to land the top players remaining after signing day and how much competition Penn State will have for those players. 

Next, they briefly discuss the transfer portal and how Penn State is trying to address the receiver and cornerback positions. 

The rest of the show is dedicated to previewing the top players in the next class. While 2024 hasn't officially started, the next batch of recruiting targets is already taking shape. Fitz and Snyder go through each position and list the top players that Penn State may wish to land by this time next year. While some names, like Pittsburgh area athlete Quinton Martin and New England offensive lineman Liam Andrews, are apparent, some other positions are not.

 Fitz discusses why hearing names early for specific positions can be an issue. This list is comprehensive for the moment, but he says that more names will emerge as serious contenders over the next six months and which positions this applies to most. 

Additionally, they discuss which positions have an early lead on depth in the region compared to last season. Finally, they highlight the top players and debate which players, such as linebacker Aaron Chiles or wide receiver Elijah Moore, could grow out of their current positions.

Wisconsin upperweight Connor Mirasola is No. 5. New York’s Zack Ryder, who could compete at 174/184, is No. 6. 165-pound Pa., native Joe Sealey is No. 8. Heavyweight Cole Mirasola is No. 14. And middle weight Brock Weiss is No. 91. PSU only team with multiple top 10 members.

Penn State Wrestling DOMINATES top ten of 2024 Class Rankings

Penn State should land several commitments this week, according to Blue White Illustrated's recruiting experts. Today on the Recruiting show, Ryan Snyder discusses Kari Jackson and Kenny Woseley's timeline for possible commitments. He and host Thomas Frank Carr also break down the On300, which dropped Monday at noon.

While Penn State fans wait to hear the outcome of a Board of Trustees meeting that's expected to confirm a contract extension for James Franklin this afternoon, there's still plenty to recap over the past week on the recruiting trail.

The big news this week is the updated On300, which saw two Penn State commits, QB Drew Allar and RB Nick Singleton, earn a five-star rating. Hosts Greg Pickel and Ryan Snyder get into their rise, especially Allar, who has jumped from outside the top 15 at his position to the No. 1 quarterback in just 11 months.

The list also includes top Penn State prospects like DE Dani Dennis-Sutton, LB Abdul Carter, RB Kaytron Allen, CB Cam Miller and Saf. KJ Winston, among others. Ryan and Greg get into some of the reasons they're ranked where they are.

Ryan also feels as if future Penn State WR Kaden Saunders, who's down at No. 231 overall, needs to be someone On3 looks at closely when he participates in the Under Armour All-America game in January.

The pair finish up the podcast discussing a few notable recruits who attended the game against Rutgers this past Saturday. Notable names include Saf. Dakaari Nelson, OL Sam Pendleton and LB Kamar Archie.

Penn State basketball won two straight last week thanks largely to the efforts of point guard Jalen Pickett. Today, he joins the Penn State Hoops Show to discuss the team's push for an NCAA tournament berth. Afterwards, host Thomas Frank Carr and Nate Bauer discuss the interview and the decisive remaining four games on the schedule.

Penn State football takes on Auburn Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium for a non-conference road clash with the Auburn Tigers of the SEC. With that, only one question has been on the mind of Penn State fans heading into the game. 

Can Penn State stop the Auburn rushing attack? 

Host of the BWI Daily Edition, Thomas Frank Carr, tackles that question on the show to try and demystify the non-conference opponent that most fans are probably unfamiliar with. He discusses the offensive line in depth and shifts his focus to the primary rushing threats in the Tigers' offense. 

T-Frank starts by discussing the problem with our collective understanding of the offensive line in football. With no hard statistics to illustrate individual performance, it can be hard to explain to people how well a group of players who cannot touch the ball is performing. Also, he points out a flaw in the media's ability to understand the position. So to describe what he's seen on film, he uses PFF run blocking grades for his evidence. 

From there, he goes through each of the Auburn starters that he expects to play against Penn State on Saturday. He gives their performance against San Jose St. from week two and their run blocking grades from last season where applicable. He paints a picture of performance, scheme, and talent for the audience. 

Next, he looks at the rushing threat presented by Tank Bigsby, Jarquez Hunter, and backup quarterback Robby Ashford. Then he highlights the explosive play ability of this group and compares the Auburn rushing attack to teams closer to home for the Nittany Lions. 

Finally, he shines the light on the Penn State defense tasked with stopping them. Does Penn State have the size and strength up front to stop the Auburn offensive line? Is that even the right question? He concludes on Penn State's chances of limiting Auburn's rushing attack and containing the big-play threats they present.

The Big Ten has four teams in the top five of the College Football Playoff Rankings, with the Nittany Lions coming in fourth. There's been significant backlash from the national media about the situation. Recently, however, SEC coaches have also taken issue with the top-heavy rankings. After practice, Penn State head coach James Franklin responded to that criticism. Today, we'll discuss Franklin's response to start the show. We'll also recap yesterday's practice. 

Penn State Recruiting news

After the team's two-week recruiting surge to start November, things have settled down, leading to signing day. But there are sharks in the water after Ohio State commit Zahir Mathis decommitted from the program. The Buckeyes offered recent Penn State commit and Ohio native Chaz Coleman this week. 

What's the danger of the Buckeyes flipping the ultra-athletic edge defender from the Lions right before signing day? We'll discuss the situation with recruiting experts Sean Fitz and Ryan Snyder on today's show. 

We'll also continue our conversation from Tuesday about the latest Class of 2025 rankings and the players that moved up and down the list. Penn State Faces Flip Challenge of Latest Commit | Minnesota Game Preview

Penn State will host over 100 college football prospects for the annual White Out game this weekend. It is one of the biggest games of the year on the field and has significant implications for the program's future in recruiting. The BWI Daily Edition will discuss both on today's show. One of the most important players attending on Saturday is a four-star receiver from Roman Catholic high school, Tyseer Denmark. Denmark is one of the top players in Pennsylvania next cycle and announced that he will end his recruitment soon. His top schools include Penn State, Ohio State and others but Snyder says that the list really ends with those two programs. 

So, where does Penn State stand in that order? Snyder discusses that to start the show. After he sets that up, T-Frank wants to know how good of an opportunity this is for Penn State to make an impression. With so many players and prospects on the sideline, can Penn State give its best effort this weekend? Snyder weighs the pros and cons of that situation. 

After discussing Denmark, T-Frank and Snyder run through important names that Snyder has added to the list since the recruiting show on Tuesday. Those players include Ellis Robinson IV, Kaveon Keys, and more. Check out the show to learn about who those players are and why they're important.

Penn State basketball got an and-one of good news yesterday, and basketball reporter Dave Eckert joins the BWI Daily Edition to discuss it. He and host Thomas Frank Carr lay out the impact that Class of 2023 point guar Logan Imes can have before teasing out the threads of Myles Dread's return to the team. Finally, they give a quick preview of Penn State football's second open practice.

The biggest news for hoops on Wednesday was the commitment of 2023 point guard Logan Imes. The 6-4 point guard from Indiana is friends with a fellow commit in '23, Braeden Shrewsberry, the son of head coach Micah Shrewsberry. Eckert gives his thoughts on what Imes brings to the Nittany Lions and what he can be in the Penn State offense under the elder Shrewsberry.

Next, T-Frank asks about Imes' ranking. On3 does not rank the Zionsville point guard or its consensus ranking, which has raised some fans' concerns. So what is the disconnect? Eckert explains why that is and how that can change this year.

Finally, they discuss Imes' profile as a basketball player. What are his strengths, and where does he need to improve? While Imes considers himself a creative basketball player, Eckert sees one area that has to improve before he steps on the court for the Nittany Lions in the future.

After that, they move on to the news that senior guard Myles Dread is returning to Penn State for his extra year of COVID eligibility. How does his return affect the team? More importantly, will he be ready to contribute next fall after having surgery on a torn labrum in his shooting shoulder? T-Frank gives a very general timetable for recovery from such an injury and then asks Eckert what Dread can bring to the team if he's less than 100% during the season.

Eckert looks at the roster and sees one key component missing that Dread can bring to the table. Aside from that, T-Frank points out that Dread just proved that he could be effective at less than his best. The Penn State offense needs to adjust if they want to recover from their dysfunction that led to six points against Ohio State in the meaningful part of last weekend's loss. Raw point totals won't fix the Penn State offense against Big Ten basement dweller Indiana. The offense needs to force the issue and make some meaningful changes to how they operate on the football field. 

Today, on Friday's Five Things, we're running down the five adjustments that could help the Penn State offense achieve a better threat balance for the season's final stretch.

Penn State balance in the passing game

The Nittany Lions have struggled to use the full field this year, relying on select areas and routes to win. Head coach James Franklin acknowledges that this is a problem. 

"Yeah, we've got to be able to attack the entire field. If most of our production is coming in similar areas of the field, then it makes you easier to defend. There's no doubt about it," Franklin said. 

We'll look at where the targets are going and what the production looks like in the under-utilized areas of the field. While offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich likely has plans to fix the issue, we'll take a stab at it too. 

Focus on the passing game

Most of today's show focuses on the Penn State passing game. The Nittany Lions don't represent enough of a credible threat to open up the running game right now. So restoring a balanced attack and credible threats is the critical fix. Franklin agrees that the team is behind in this area. 

"Yeah, we're behind in the passing game. I think we've shown some flashes," he said. 

Franklin believes that getting Harrison Wallace back up to speed and integrated into the passing game will help. However, the pass-catchers need to step up and it's something they've been told behind closed doors and now, publicly.

"I don't want to ever say anything's divisive between the offense and the defense. Or, a position group feeling like they're being called out. We do those things behind closed doors. But, the reality is, there's room for growth there."

Franklin believes this week is a good chance to take a step forward and execute properly. 

"But, this is an opportunity to take a step this week and build confidence moving forward. I think there's guys in that room that have the ability to do the job and do the job at a high level. But it's about consistency physically. But, it's also consistency mentally."

Can Penn State Recruit on the ROAD at West Virginia? | Weekend Preview and Game Predictions

Penn State basketball introduced new head basketball coach Mike Rhoades last Thursday, but the fallout of former head coach Micah Shrewsberry isn't over. After public bickering over NIL spilled into the social media landscape, and since then, more formal means of communication, it's clear there is a battle going on inside Penn State. 

The Athletic Department, led by new director Pat Kraft and the university are attempting to chart a productive course through the new name image and likeness frontier. But inside, political infighting is causing serious concerns for that future. 

That is, according to an alumni-elected board of trustees member, Brandon Short. 

Short sat down with Blue White Illustrated's Nate Bauer for an interview about the situation surrounding Shrewsberry's departure and warns of more trouble to come. "Losing Micah Was a wake-up call"

Short didn't mince words speaking with Bauer. 

"We lost Micah for a number of reasons, but one of the biggest reasons was a lack of support through NIL," Short said. This backs up the reporting that Bauer had conducted prior to Shrewsberry's decision. Short went on to say that the situation is a black eye for national perception.

"It's a wake-up call for me. When he chose Notre Dame over Penn State, I felt heartbroken and embarrassed that a school could come and take our coach. We're Penn State. We're not a stepping-stone job. Penn State is a destination job, and I think we need to do everything that we can to make sure that that never happens again."

More trouble coming for for Penn State

For Short, the issues surround a dissenting minority of Board of Trustees members that he claims are undermining the athletic department. 

"I can tell you that our current football coach has been here for nine years, and we have alumni-elected trustees who claim to be leading the NIL efforts who've never met with the head coach in the nine years that he's been here, much less discussed NIL initiatives."

It's not just NIL, though this is the latest frontier the fight has come to. Short, who did not reference former Penn State coach Jay Paterno or trustee Anthony Lubrano by name, citing some specific events where this group of trustees tried to hold back progress.

"For a lot of people that are upset about losing Micah Shrewsberry, or some of the things they see in athletics, we have three incumbent trustees who all voted against Lasch, all voted against supporting our football program at a time when they needed it."

Short discusses pressing matters for the program and is concerned that the infighting will spill over, affecting football and, thus, the program's overall health. Listen to the full interview for more.

While the list of recruits will certainly be more intensive for the next home game against Michigan, the list for Indiana included some impressive players. On today’s show, we’ll discuss Alex Tatsch, Jermaine Kinsler, Naeshaun Montgomery, and more.

Game reaction and discussion

Even in Penn State’s blowout wins, they’ve seemingly struggled to be consistent on offense. We’ll discuss the Nittany Lion’s offense on today’s show to dissect the good and bad from the game.

On the bad side, the team went three and out three times and had several sub 25-yard drives during the afternoon. Yet after a costly turnover late in the game, the Penn State offense and Drew Allar responded with an emphatic 78-yard touchdown drive, capped off by a 57-yard strike from Allar to KeAndre Lambert-Smith.

So, was this an evolution from the offense or a one-off play? If it’s an evolution, did the way it happened to come as a relief to an offense that seems to play tight and afraid of mistakes?

“No, but it was awesome. I enjoyed it. That was awesome. I wouldn’t describe it that way, but yeah, obviously Drew’s being able to sit in there and deliver that ball. KeAndre, being able to make that play and finish and stay in bounds was awesome. As you guys know, we talked about it enough. We talked about it a bunch. We’ve got to continue to be able to do that. So, that was awesome. It was awesome,” Penn Stae head coach James Franklin said after the game.

Penn State Basketball coach Mike Rhoades discusses NIL, blown call vs GA Tech

Penn State football is still finding ways to add players during the winter season, but things have finally settled on the roster churn from the end of 2021. Senior Editor Nate Bauer took a look at what transpired and the multiple layers of complexity to it. 

Bauer joins the BWI Daily Edition to talk about what he wrote and how Penn State chose to navigate the COVID exemptions for seniors and super seniors this past year. With four different groups of seniors making decisions about their status with the team, The need for practicality and organization was critical. So how did head coach James Franklin navigate this? Bauer and host Thomas Frank Carr look at the players that stayed and left to find the clues. 

Next, they discuss a minor addition to the program, walk-on receiver Jake Spencer. The former Colgate wideout spent two seasons with his former program and now joins Penn State for the 2022 season. T-Frank took a quick look at his bio and his high school tape to get a sense of where he’ll help Penn State as a depth player and what skills made him a target as a walk-on. 

After that, they take a look at Penn State’s linebacker situation for next season. Franklin made news at the bowl game when he said that safety Jonathan Sutherland would be playing linebacker in the game and going forward. After initially rejecting the idea, T-Frank has come around on the notion of the sixth-year defender moving closer to the line of scrimmage. He does have some caveats, though. T-Frank talks Bauer through how defenses can use personnel and how Sutherland fits into that picture. 

Finally, they wrap up discussing Penn State basketball’s frustrating slog through January. They’ve lost two after starting the month 2-2, with a canceled game in between. How much did losing that game hurt? Bauer highlights that, explains what happened in the Nittany Lions’ loss to Iowa and how the team needs to play to win games.

Penn State football fans have lots of questions after the team's season-opening win against Purdue nearly a week ago. So the BWI Daily mailbag show will give you some of those answers. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss fans' questions submitted to the Blue White Illustrated message board.

They start the show with a discussion about the Penn State running game. A message board member wants to know if the Nittany Lions offense should take Fox commentator Joel Klatt's suggestion and line the Penn State running backs up deeper in the backfield to give them a running start at the handoff. 

Bauer gives his thoughts on the matter before T-Frank describes what he saw on film during the game. From there, T-Frank shifts the conversation towards freshman Nick Singleton and how using him in certain formations could be advantageous for specific reasons. 

They also discuss the travel roster for away games and the rules set by the Big Ten. Now that teams are making exponentially more money, is that an outdated rule? T-Frank and Bauer discuss that theoretical change in the future. From there, that conversation bleeds into one about the wide receiver position. Does Penn State have a clear picture of their rotation beyond Parker Washington and Mitchell Tinsley? Bauer tells T-Frank what he knows about the situation. 

The next question deals with rotation at all positions but focuses on the running backs. Does the staff need to limit the rotation of that group to get players in a rhythm? T-Frank doesn't buy the rhythm theory, but he does explain why getting more opportunities for one player is advantageous based on his experience. 

They answer questions about how fans should view the game and the opponent from week one and how it compares to last season's opening win against Wisconsin. They also take an extended portion of the show to discuss Landon Tengwall's best position, the problem at right tackle, and if it's too early to worry about those players. 

They wrap up the show discussing Keaton Ellis' performance and how Penn State can match up against Ohio State in a month.

The Penn State Nittany Lions have been active in the transfer portal for the last week, acquiring several former high-profile recruiting targets from Big Ten foes. On Today’s BWI Live Show, we’re discussing what both Julian Fleming and Nolan Rucci bring to the table from a skill perspective based on their film. Penn State getting upside with Nolan Rucci

The first part of today’s show will center around BWI’s assessment of Nolan Rucci from his bowl game film against LSU. Here’s a portion of that article from earlier this week.

It seems Rucci’s physical talent hasn’t been accentuated by great coaching based on how unnatural it seems. Despite that, he’s fast and fluid enough to win. Furthermore, Penn State offensive line coach Phil Trautwein is known as a detail-oriented coach in regards to fundamentals. While we’re just skimming the surface of those skills, it seems like Rucci could quickly turn into a plus-pass protector.

We’ll discuss more of the context around Rucci’s play and what sort of player they’re getting out of the portal from Wisconsin. The Badgers have gone through several radical changes over the last several seasons, and the stereotypes about Wisconsin linemen are not the same as they used to be.

Fleming provides a veteran presence

While there’s little film on Rucci, Fleming is another story. The former Penn State top receiver target has extensive film and playing time at Ohio State. But what does the tape say about his usage and production with the Buckeyes?

We’ll discuss his talents, what sort of athlete he is and how he could figure into the Penn State passing attack this upcoming season. With one year of eligibility left, Fleming is trying to make an impact now.

Wide receiver discussion continued

However, the issues surrounding the wide receiver room aren't over. Penn State fans want to know why the team had so many problems getting production out of its wideouts in 2023. We'll discuss the multiple factors and nuances of the situation that ultimately led to the team declining to target the position for the final three games after offensive coordiantor Mike Yurcich was fired. We'll also discuss how new offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki fits into the equation and how he can potentially fix the problem.

Lastly, we examine the hole in the transfer portal roster at cornerback. Penn State is pursuing several players at the position. We'll give you a brief breakdown of A.J. Harris and how he could fit into the room if and when he commits to the program.

There are multiple spinning plates for the Penn State football team this offseason, like every college football team. While the coaching staff is wrapping up the January contact period and junior days, the current Nittany Lions are hard at work preparing for next season. On top of that, the college football landscape is continually changing with NIL, the transfer portal, and more unforeseen changes ahead.

To make sense of all of it, the BWI Live crew comes to you live at noon every Monday to talk about this week's Penn State sports topics. Host Thomas Frank Carr, senior editor Nate Bauer, and reporter Dave Eckert cover Penn State football, basketball, and hockey on this week's edition.

They'll start with the state of Penn State football in the offseason. Then, they will give what they think are the most impactful facets of the 2022 offseason. Is it a lack of transfers? What about the traditional signing day coming up on Wednesday? Each panelist picks one topic they think is essential and presents their case.

Bauer and Eckert will give their thoughts on the last several weeks and how Penn State can bounce back in the next month.

Blue White Illustrated broke news Monday morning that Penn State has found its next receivers coach. Head coach James Franklin tagged Virginia assistant head coach and receivers coach Marques “Biscuit” Hagans to fill the same position with the Nittany Lions. Hagans survived two coaching changes at Virginia and had been in his current position since 2011. Today on the BWI Daily recruiting show, insiders Ryan Snyder and Sean Fitz discuss the recruiting implications of hiring Hagans. They’ll also highlight the notable players that attended Penn State’s junior day on Saturday.

In the show’s first half, Snyder and Fitz take a deep dive into Hagans fit with the Nittany Lions as a recruiter and developer. Then, they draw some parallels between his best players at UVA and how he was able to help them, highlighted by Olamide Zaccheaus, now a starter for the Atlanta Falcons. 

But because it’s a recruiting show, they dive deeper into that element of his hiring. Penn State has done very well in Virginia over the last several cycles. Yet there’s one talent-rich area they haven’t been able to mine successfully, and it’s one that Hagans knows well. So they discuss which recruits in the upcoming class he could help Penn State land from the region and what other players outside of receiver he could sway. 

Finally, they dive into the latest junior day for Penn State football. The list surprised both Fitz and Snyder, who expected a lower turnout for the second of the team’s three junior day events. Instead, several high-level athletes, including a top-25 player in the upcoming class, made the trip to Happy Valley. Find out which 2024 and 2025 players stood out to BWI’s recruiting experts. 

Penn State's recruiting efforts for the Class of 2023 came into sharper clarity this week with the release of the On300 from Blue White Illustrated's parent company. The BWI Daily Edition, Recruiting show focuses on that list and details where Penn State's commits and targets ended up in the new rankings. Then, host Greg Pickel and recruiting insider, Ryan Snyder, go through the most important players.

First, they start with Penn State's top committed players. Five-star offensive lineman Jven Williams cracked the top 15 players in the nation, while four-star interior lineman Alex Birchmeier is outside that five-star group. So, could Penn State have two five-star linemen in the same class? Snyder gives his thoughts.

Next, they look at the top 100 players in the nation and detail the targets that Penn State has a chance to land. Snyder starts with Thayer Academy tackle Samson Okunlola, who clocks in at 59th nationally. Okunlola has an even split between Penn State, Georiga, Rutgers, and Virginia in the On3 RPM Prediction Machine. So Snyder fills in the context of Penn State's standing with the four-star tackle prospect. He also highlights tackle Kadyn Proctor and receiver Noah Rogers.

From there, Snyder singles out Florida defensive tackle Derrick LeBlanc, who is the 71st player in the nation per On3's update. His relationship with a current Nittany Lion is a bonus for Penn State recruiting. How much? Snyder relays which player he's close with and how realistic the possibility is. Later in the podcast, they discuss LeBlanc's teammate, John Walker, who went from unraked to 125.

Other players that Snyder goes over include Maryland defensive tackle Jason Moore (89th overall) and 2nd ranked safety in the country, Cameron Seldon, as potential targets in the top 100.

From there, they discuss the following 100 players and Penn State's targets in that group. Gonzaga's Evan Link leads this group. The 6-5 tackle jumped 75 spots in the rankings, and Snyder gives the story on how Link made such a giant leap.

Linebackers Ta'Mere Robinson, Tony Rojas, and receiver Rodney Gallagher are regional prospects with which Penn State sits in a strong position. Pickel details their movement on the list and gives his thoughts on their Penn State recruiting fit. Penn State commit Neeo Avery also checks in at this part in the list.

Finally, Snyder highlights physical freak Joseph Mupoyi from Archbishop Carroll at the defensive end position.

Lastly, they look at the final third of the group from 201-300. According to Snyder, quarterback JJ Kohl is a hot name, as is Florida QB Marcus Stokes. Check out the show to hear more about the quarterback situation.

They also touch on the running back situation with London Montgomery from Scranton Prep. The 5-9 tailback made the 300 list, but Penn State is seemingly looking elsewhere. Will he get an offer? Again, Snyder gives some details on the situation. Finally, Snyder highlights dark horse defensive end, Jameial Lyons, from Roman Catholic in Philadelphia.

So, with the deep plunge of the Big Ten schedule ahead, it's a good time to look back and evaluate how the first half of the season went. T-Frank and Pickel start the show discussing what transpired Tuesday night at James Franklin's post-practice press conference. After defensive tackle Coziah Izzard made his season debut against Northwestern, the obvious question then becomes the status of defensive end Smith Vilbert. Both players sat out the first month of the season, and Franklin announced yesterday that Vilbert would not play this season. What impact does that have on the Penn State defensive line? Pickel and T-Frank discuss that topic before discussing what Izzard brings to the table at defensive tackle now that he's returned. 

Next, they discuss their general impressions of the team over five weeks. Pickel gives his thoughts on how the offensive identity has shaped through the first half of the season and what he thinks they need to be going forward. Then T-Frank asks for his impressions of Manny Diaz's defense now that Pickel has seen it in-depth. Next, they discuss that side of the ball and T-Frank gives stats he found interesting when researching how the team compares to last season's 5-0 start. 

Then, they discuss which players performed the best on offense and defense through the first half of the season. Next, they review the players that need to elevate their play or contribute more in the upcoming critical three-game stretch of Big Ten opponents. 

Lastly, they review the wrestling schedule release earlier this week and talk about Bo Nikal's rise through the UFC ranks.

T-Frank and Fitz's Favorite Penn State Wide Receiver Prospects in 2025

Penn State football takes on Maryland Saturday at 3:30, and Blue White Illustrated is getting you ready for the game with the official Penn State vs. Maryland preview. Host Thomas Frank Carr fills in for Sean Fitz and Nate Bauer returns to give you his thoughts on practice and the upcoming game. T-Frank and Fitz start the show by discussing what they saw at Penn State's open practice on Wednesday evening. Bauer oversaw the defensive observations this week and reported what he did and, most importantly, who he didn't see at practice Wednesday evening. Bauer also noted a specific tonal shift with the practice this week. He attributes that to a late-season effort for engagement from the coaching staff.

Next, they shift to the offense and discuss what T-Frank saw with the offensive line, where he spent most of his time. First, he discusses what he saw from right tackle Caedan Wallace, coach Phil Trautwein, and freshman left tackle Drew Shelton when he was observing the evening's proceedings. From there, they discuss the state of the offensive line with the news this week about Landon Tengwall's surgery, Hunter Nourzad's announcement, and Olu Fashanu's absence. 

T-Frank has some thoughts about the narrative of Fashanu as a top-10 draft pick and his reservations about that reality coming true in the spring. In addition, he discusses facts he found when researching younger offensive linemen entering the league and other factors that he thinks others are ignoring in the evaluation. 

After discussing Penn State head coach James Franklin's post-practice comments, they dive into the preview of Maryland. First, T-Frank discusses what he's seen on film from the Terps and how which key matchups he thinks will determine the game on Saturday. Next, they discuss the Maryland passing game and how T-Frank thinks Taulia Tagovailoa's injury affects him during games. Penn State isn't the only team with an offensive line in flux, either. They discuss Maryland's issues at center and how Wisconsin neutralized the passing game last week in Maryland's loss to the Badgers. Finally, check out the podcast to hear why he thinks screens are such an important part of the upcoming game.

Today on the BWI Live Recruiting Show, we're recapping all things Penn State vs. West Virginia. A new edition of the Penn State wrestling show from Blue-White Illustrated is live. Hosts Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel are back with the latest on head coach Cael Sanderson's program. This week's episode is heavy on recruiting talk with news of another honor for Aaron Brooks, as well.

The duo start the show by breaking down the Nittany Lions' Class of 2024. MatScouts and InterMat both recently released their final team rankings for the latest recruiting cycle. Penn State leads both top 25 lists.

It's not a surprise, as the program is bringing six top-100 wrestlers into the Lorenzo Wrestling Complex, including No. 1 pound-for-pound Pa., prep star Luke Lilledahl, who will wrestle at 125 pounds and possibly start this season, in addition to top-15 recruits Connor (No. 5, projects at 197 pounds) and Cole (No. 14/heavyweight) Mirasola from Wisconsin, New York's Zack Ryder (No. 6/174 or 184), Wyoming Seminary standout Joe Sealey (No. 8/165), and Jersey Shore's Brock Weiss (No. 91/157). Those rankings are courtesy of MatScouts. Penns Valley middleweight Ty Watson rounds out this year's signing group. It arrives on campus soon and a few members of it could find their way into the starting lineup. Why did Penn State have another successful recruiting run? Zollers is just one part of the recruiting news heating up the first week of the dead period. The team earned a commitment from two defenders this week. We've discussed both linebacker Alex Tatsch and defensive athlete Dayshaun Burnett in their commitment breakdowns, but we'll review the week's developments on today's show.

Junior Day #3 recap

Speaking of the dead period, Penn State hosted several important prospects during the team's final Junior Day in the last half week of January. What has the response been to the event? Snyder caught up with several prospects to gauge their impression of the Nittany Lions. He'll share several of his conversations on today's show.

From there, we'll review the action from the last month. Which positions are clearer after Junior Days? Which are still emerging? We'll recap the prospects and boards for several of the team's positions.

Class of 2025 Recap

Penn State practice update

The team hosted its weekly media session on Tuesday of its second bye week, and Blue White Illustrated was there to observe and report. On today's show, we discuss the nature of this week's practice and why Penn State eased up on the pace this week compared to previous bye weeks.  

Next, we'll discuss what Penn State head coach James Franklin said after practice. While it's his least favorite topic, Franklin discussed injuries and the situation at punter return with Kaden Saunders and Zion Tracy.

Also, after a big game, quarterback Drew Allar was a significant topic Tuesday night. Franklin gave the entire quarterback operation credit for the success. 

"I think [QB Coach] Danny's [O'Brien] done a really good job of spending time and building trust and having kind of a demeanor on the sideline that I think has been really good for him as well. And then [offensive coordinator] Andy [Kotelnicki] is doing a really good job of playing to Drew's strengths as well as playing to our personnel strengths. I think it's a combination of all those things."

Midseason report card

Today's show topic is also derived from Franklin's comments last night. He felt that the bye week after the USC game was a very good time in the season and under the right circumstances. 

"I just think when you talk about the middle of the season, game six, it's a good point to have a bye. Sometimes you get a bye really early, sometimes you get a bye late, and not the best position for the bye to land, but this is at a good point. And then, obviously coming off a win, I'd probably feel very different if we hadn't come off a win."

News broke on Friday afternoon that Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh would be suspended from all games for the remainder of the season by the Big Ten and commissioner Tony Pettiti. While the legal case continues to evolve, we'll discuss what the role of a head coach is on the sidelines and how Harbaugh's absence can affect the team. We'll discuss what the role of a head coach is on game days and what Michigan will potentially be missing.

Also, does this move give Michigan extra motivation? We'll turn to Hawkins to get a player-level understanding of how the team will likely feel about the situation.

But the actual game still matters

While headlines off the field are one thing, the game is another. We'll discuss how the Michigan offense matches up with the Penn State defense and vice versa. You'll also hear features, look at the Big Ten Schedule for this week, and more.

But what type of game are we in store for? Penn State head coach James Franklin knows how these things go.

"I think we're going to have to be patient. I mean, could this game turn out to be game where there is multiple touchdowns scored on both sides and it comes down to a one-possession game and more of a shootout?"

"Yes," Franklin said rhetorically.

"Is it more likely to come down to a low-scoring game and a battle and a one-possession game and four-minute, two-minute type situations at the end? Probably most likely."

Franklin implored fans as much as his staff to embrace the game style and not get impatient for big plays or points when they're not there.

"So, for us, we got to make sure that we don't lose patience. There will be times where punting may be the best option. We just got to manage this game, and when the opportunities present themselves, we got to take advantage of it. I think patience is going to be critical."

Spring-Ford quarterback Matt Zollers visits this weekend before heading down south to see perennial powerhouses Alabama and Georgia. Zollers will then make his decision next Thursday. Penn State vs USC Recap | Did Lions take a step this weekend?

Each week senior editor Nate Bauer and football film analyst Thomas Frank Carr sit down to answer your Penn State questions on the BWI Daily Edition mailbag show. Today they answer questions about head strength coach Chuck Losey, how to best use freshman running back Nick Singleton, and more.

T-Frank and Bauer start the show by discussing the annual Lift for Life event, which is back and open to the public for the first time since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Bauer and T-Frank discuss the event, its meaning, and how fans can get a unique view into the program, which they usually don't.

From there, they dive into the mailbag to discuss questions from the audience. First, they start with a question about the quarterback situation. Will Penn State have a reliable backup to starter Sean Clifford this year? Bauer recently spoke to offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich and relays his conversation with Yurcich on this topic. Does Bauer think the team will have a quality player to push Clifford? T-Frank follows up with his thoughts on the topic.

Next, a viewer asks if there's a difference with new strength coach Chuck Losey leading the team in the athletic development department. Next, Bauer and T-Frank discuss some of the natural differences when transitioning between leadership, even if they believe the same things. Finally, a question about four-star defensive lineman Jason Moore steers them into the realm of recruiting conversation.

A viewer asks if there is one uncommitted player in the Class of 2023 that is most important or valuable. Bauer and T-Frank discuss the meaning of the word "important" and "valuable" and debate the different applications of those words. Does the question refer to the balance of the class? The value of the position? Or the long-term health of the roster? Bauer and T-Frank dissect Penn State's needs from multiple angles.

Next, a message board member wants to know about running back Nick Singleton. Can Penn State use Singleton in more ways than as just a runner? What about throwing him passes in the flat? Bauer dives into what sort of hill Singleton must climb mentally to earn that role first. He also references freshman teammate Kaytron Allen as a player who is mentally ahead of the curve thanks to his IMG Academy training.

Once that baseline is established, T-Frank counters the question by describing how Penn State used running back Saquon Barkley in a more valuable way than passes into the flat. Next, he explains what types of targets are helpful and how the team can put Singleton into a similarly advantageous situation.

Everything affects recruiting, but no single thing will win you or lose a group of players. So how do you measure the impact of the loss to Michigan? Host Ryan Snyder and Blue White Illustrated publisher Sean Fitz discuss that idea to start the show. For Fitz, the discussion isn’t about losing to Michigan; it’s about a larger narrative around the program he examines. 

However, individual cases can change the balance of one situation or another. For Snyder, he finds Anthony Speca’s recruitment fascinating now that the four-star linebacker will visit Michigan and Penn State in back-to-back weeks. He even discusses who he thinks the leader for Speca’s services is at this point. 

The White Out isn’t the only list this week. The On300 for the Class of 2024 got an update this week, and the next crop of talent heading into college football is crystallizing. Some interesting players that intrigued Fitz and Snyder include interior lineman Liam Andrews and tackle Kevin Haywood, among others. 

It wasn’t all good news for Penn State prospects, though. Players like Quinton Martin and Dominic Nichols dropped in the rankings, which should surprise most recruiting fans. However, Snyder spoke to Charles Power, the recruiting director for On3, about most of Penn State’s prospects and gave the reasons behind the drop for critical prospects. 

Finally, the duo discusses the White Out list. While they don’t dive into each name, they do examine five names each that they think are exciting players to watch this weekend. Some players include Quince Orchard pass rusher Jaylen Harvey and defensive end Brian Robinson out of Ohio. Fitz also highlights a contingent of offensive linemen from the Buckeye state coming to the game. Throughout the show, they also highlight players that should be on commitment watch before, after, or during the big recruiting weekend.

Fitz's recruiting update

While the game takes center stage, the recruiting efforts around Penn State's first primetime game of the year were also in action this weekend. Recruiting expert Sean Fitz dives into the important names that attended the win over Illinois in our weekly recruiting update. He also discusses the newest offer for 2026, PA native Reston Lehman. The defensive end prospect spoke with Blue White Illustrated recently, and Fitz gives his thoughts on the recruitment. 

Of course, the biggest names for the upcoming class were at the top of everyone's mind on Saturday. He'll let you know what he's learned about La Salle College High School star Joey O'Brien's visit to Happy Valley and how California native Madden Williams felt about his trip to the East Coast.

Penn State Football dons their "Generations of Greatness" jerseys Saturday for the 103rd homecoming game at Beaver Stadium. The Nittany Lions face UMass in the final non-conference class of the 2023 regular season. We're previewing the game and discussing how Penn State sets up for the second half of the season this week on today's BWI Live Show. Penn State practice observations and James Franklin press conference recap

Having a team like UMass late in the year might cause fans and media to look ahead at Ohio State on the schedule, but Franklin thinks his team is locked in and improving their performance each day in practice,

"I thought our Tuesday practice was as good of a Tuesday practice as we've had in a long time. our Tuesday practice against West Virginia was really good. But then we didn't back it up with a Wednesday practice that was right. We're starting to kind of really figure out how to practice at a really high level on a consistent basis. And whether it's football or any other industry or sport, being really successful is about consistency," Franklin said afterward.

He also made a statement to start his press conference about inaccurate reporting by national outlets, which we'll discuss on the show.

Franklin also fanned the desires of some fans to see right tackle Caedan Wallace move from right tackle, paving the way for redshirt freshman Drew Shelton to take his place. Penn State's head coach mentioned that Wallace has gotten work at guard this year.

"It's just flexibility. Obviously, when we lost Landon, that changed some things for us. I think Caedan is the guy that has the feet and athleticism to play tackle, but he's also got the size and the power to play guard. He's 330 pounds or somewhere around there. So he just creates flexibility. That's good for us, and I think it's gonna be good for him long term as well."

Penn State football held their second open practice of the spring period, and Blue White Illustrated was there to see it. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer share their impression of the 20 minutes that media was allowed to view Wednesday night and then take viewer questions for their weekly mailbag show.

Bauer starts the conversation by discussing what he saw from the special teams period of practice, which made up the bulk of the viewing experience. While it's easy to overlook, the punter and kicker positions are vacant this offseason after the graduation of specialist Jordan Stout. So was there anything to be gained? Both T-Frank and Bauer were intrigued by some of the players they saw returning punts.

After that, Bauer discusses what he saw from the all-important quarterback position while T-Frank gives his thoughts on what he saw from the skill positions, including receiver. Then, after bringing up third-year wide-out Malick Meiga, T-Frank transitions into the mailbag portion of the show.

One viewer asks if Meiga's prominence this spring is real or hype. Bauer gives his thoughts that Meiga's hype is real this spring. According to Bauer, the Canadian receiver was not a part of the picture last season for an important reason, and the positive feedback has been growing all year. On the other hand, T-Frank says that the hype is noise despite his earlier praise. Finally, he explains what he needs to see to understand what sort of player Meiga is.

Next, they answer a pair of roster-based questions about the strengths and weaknesses of the team coming into the spring and which starters might have their spot in jeopardy next year.

From there, they have a lengthy discussion about the situation and the state of the Penn State football program. If not "on the hot seat," what pressure should head coach James Franklin and his staff feel after two seasons below expectations?

Bauer and T-Frank debate what another sub-par season would mean for Penn State's perception with a critical group of individuals. They also discuss how fans and media pressure don't affect college coaches the same way professional ones do. While the current Penn State football players are hard at work in the weight room getting ready for the 2022 season, eight former Nittany Lions are gearing up for the next step in their career. Starting Tuesday, March 1st, these players will put their skills to the test at the annual NFL Combine in Indianapolis in front of 32 teams.

Which players need to make the most of an impact? You can make a case for any one of them, but host Thomas Frank Carr has picked three players to represent the three critical data-gathering facets of the Combine.

After a quick introduction about the Penn Staters that won Super Bowl LVI, T-Frank starts with the interview portion of the Combine. Most fans are not aware of the 15-minute interview sessions outside of the skills testing on the field during the week in Indy. Players meet with interested teams in scheduled blocks of time to ask just about any question they want. While the most bizarre questions make it to the light of day, the more serious questions about play, performance, and personality don't. So who needs to ace the interview portion the most? T-Frank has a candidate that he thinks fits that situation perfectly.

Next, he focuses on the testing portion of the Combine. From the famous 40-yard dash to the vertical leap, one player needs to post excellent numbers more than the other seven representatives from Penn State. So why is Jesse Luketa the pick? After all, he just finished an impressive week at the Senior Bowl. T-Frank explains.

Finally comes the medical examinations at the Combine. Who has the most checkered injury past? Penn State does not give public details regarding injuries, so this is a murkier topic. Despite that, one player stands out.

Finally, T-Frank addresses one related topic to the Combine and the players mentioned on the show. Did some players, like Luketa, make a mistake by declaring for the draft? Would one more year of development change their draft slotting? T-Frank gives his thoughts on what he thinks is a warped perception of money, draft position, and value.

The BWI Daily Edition is preparing you for the 2022 Penn State football season by previewing the Penn State football team position by position. Today, they continue their look at the Nittany Lion's offense by examining the most polarizing group on the Penn State roster; the offensive line. Host Thomas Frank Carr and senior editor Nate Bauer discuss the starters, key reserves, and freshmen on the team that will shape the fate of this group in the fall. 

They start by discussing Penn State center Juice Scruggs. Does Penn State need a great center to have the best version of its offensive line? That's the theory Bauer presents to T-Frank about senior Juice Scruggs. T-Frank doesn't have a direct rebuttal for that thought but doesn't agree. The two discuss what makes a good offensive line or player before diving into the group. 

From there, T-Frank introduces the presumed starting lineup of left tackle Olu Fashanu, left guard Landon Tengwall, center Juice Scruggs, right guard Hunter Nourzad, and right tackle Caedan Wallace. Three of the five starters from this year differ from the previous year. 

So, does that mean the stock is up because the problems from last year are no longer starting, or is the stock down becuase once again, Penn State has massive turnover and youth on the line? Bauer and T-Frank debate the merits of each point. 

They also discuss the depth issues at tackle, which players can contribute beyond the starting five, before wrapping up by looking at the first-year players.

Penn State News

In an unfortunate update, Penn State will be without Tengwall's services for the remainder of the season. The third-year offensive lineman is stepping away from football due to an injury.

"It is with a heavy heart that I am announcing my retirement from Football. Unfortunately, I have sustained an injury that will not allow me to safely continue to play the game I love, and that has given me so much," Tengwall announced in a statement on social media Wednesday night.

Fitz and Bauer will react to the news and explain how the team will move forward without Tengwall in a season that promised progress up front.

Next, they'll discuss the other news that Franklin detailed in his press conference on Wednesday evening. The final tuneups for the season opener are taking place this week but the media got a chance to see how those were going on Wednesday. Fitz and Bauer were at practice and give their impression of the offense's progress.

Penn State practice preview

Penn State's KEY to Stopping USC | Game Preview

Recruiting is never over in any class until it’s signed, but things have slowed down for Penn State football’s class of 2023. August is typically a slow month for the current recruiting cycle, so today, the BWI Daily Edition looks ahead to 2024. Host Thomas Frank Carr and recruiting insider Ryan Snyder go through the top names to know on offense that Penn State is interested in and vice versa. For Penn State fans that follow the show, some names are reviewed, but some are emerging heading into the fall. 

T-Frank and Snyder start at quarterback for 2024. However, unlike the 2023 cycle, Penn State has some common interest with several top quarterbacks in the country. Jayden Bradford tops the list, but Snyder has six other names that Penn State fans should keep an eye on. 

Athlete Quinton Martin isn’t just the most essential running back on the list; he’s the most important recruit in the class. Snyder considers him even more valuable than that. Outside of the five-star talent, BWI’s recruiting insider identifies several other players and highlights St. Thomas Aquinas runner Jordan Lyle as a name to know. 

The receiver group is a deep and talented list, as it usually is. But which players represent must-gets? Several to choose from, but Snyder stays in-state and highlights four-star Tyseer Denmark and Rico Scott. Scott of Bishop McDevitt has major offers, including Texas A&M and Alabama. Denmark also draws national interest from teams like Alabama, Oregon, and Georgia. Can Penn State keep the Roman Catholic player in Pennsylvania? 

Grabbing one top recruit from PA is critically important, according to T-Frank. He explains why. Moving on from the receivers, there’s one primary name to know at tight end. Rochester, MI, native Brady Prieskorn has separated himself from the group in this cycle, and Snyder explains who else is in the picture. 

The offensive line, particularly tackle, is a sore spot for Penn State recruiting. Snyder and T-Frank discuss the compiled list of names determining offensive line coach Phil Trautwein’s success in this cycle. Malvern Prep’s Peter Jones tops the list, and Snyder has some insight about his game to lead off the conversation. In addition, Deontae Armstrong of Ohio recently camped at Penn State and impressed T-Frank, who discussed what he saw from the prospect at Penn State’s final summer camp last week. 

Finally, Snyder and T-Frank arrive at the final position, the interior of the offensive line. Four-star lineman Cooper Cousins stands as the lone committed player in the class. Alongside him, Liam Andrews commands an essential spot in Penn State’s recruiting efforts this cycle. Snyder compares him to an offensive line commit in the class of 2023, thanks to his importance. 

T-Frank wraps the show by asking Snyder to assess the depth of the region and how optimistic Penn State fans should be about this class.

Fitz and Bauer start with Nate’s favorite topic, bowl selection. What’s the latest news on Penn State’s bowl destination? This weekend’s game may not matter at all, based on new reports. Find out how the Nittany Lions could skip the line and head to Pasadena in January. 

After finishing up the discussion on bowls, the team turns its attention to the players who will or maybe won’t play in the game. Redshirt junior cornerback Joey Porter Jr. opted out of whichever bowl Penn State will play in and head to the NFL. The All-Big Ten corner missed several games to end the season thanks to an appendectomy at the beginning of the month but returned to play on senior day. He finished the game against Michigan State with 11 total defensive snaps and two targets. 

So, who else might opt out of the game aside from Porter? Fitz and Bauer discuss the most likely names. 

Next, they turn to the All-Big Ten selections that Penn State earned alongside Porter Jr. Both were shocked at where fellow corner Kalen King and safety Ji’Ayir Brown landed and bandied about other names in the discussion about which players landed with what team. 

Finally, they dig into the most crucial topic of the show, the transfer portal. Penn State redshirt freshman quarterback Christian Veilleux put his name into the portal this week, marking the first soon-to-be departure when the portal opens on December 5th. There are other likely names, but it’s the unlikely names that Bauer and Fitz discuss. 

That’s because Name Image and Likeness is going to dramatically shape college football because teams will begin the attempt to poach players from other schools with lucrative or enticing deals. How will they go about that? Bauer explains how he hears the conversation framed. Meanwhile, Fitz discusses how NIL will affect the incoming recruits set to sign in December. 

Penn State football takes the field on September 1 against West Virginia to open the 2023 season. It’s a highly-anticipated year for the Nittany Lions who are an offseason favorite of the national media to push for a College Football Playoff spot. One of the key contributors to the Penn State defense is linebacker Curtis Jacobs. He joins the BWI Live YouTube show to discuss the upcoming season, along with other topics.

Penn State, Jacobs in line for a big season. 

One of the major reasons for optimism on defense is that Jacobs, a third-year player decided to return for another season at linebacker instead of opting for the NFL Draft. T-Frank and Jacobs will discuss that decision and how he arrived at it. They’ll also discuss Jacob’s thoughts on the team and preparation this offseason. 

Jacobs has spent the offseason preparing himself mentally and physically for the upcoming season, which could be a breakout performance for the fourth-year linebacker. 

“I’ve really dove deep into film study. I know I’ve been a film guy, but I really looked into NFL schemes and other teams’ schemes; just trying to learn offense at this point,” Jacobs said at Lift For Life.

“I’ve been watching a lot of pass-rush stuff too. So I’ve been watching a lot of Michah [Parsons] and Von Miller. I’ve been watching a lot of those guys and how they get to the quarterback. That’s one of the most important plays in football, knocking the quarterback off the spot.”

Jacobs is now ten pounds heavier than he was at this time last year, with his listed weight at 238 pounds. The veteran linebacker split time between positions last season after the emergence of freshman Abdul Carter. 

Jacobs was third on the team last year with 29 solo tackles and chipped in 23 assists, according to Penn State’s official stat book. He also came in third with 7.5 tackles for loss and four sacks. 

Jacobs was also a standout coverage defender at both linebacker positions. According to PFF, Jacobs finished the year with a 61.0 NFL passer rating when targeted, which led the Penn State Linebackers. He also led the unit with 12 passing game stops. 

On Thursday, Penn State football held their annual max testing day open to the media. Host Thomas Frank Carr and reporter Greg Pickel were at Holuba Hall to take in the sights and sounds.

Pickel starts by giving you his general impressions of the day and the environment in the makeshift weight room. Penn State is undergoing major renovations to its weight-lifting facility, so the team set up a makeshift quarter in Holuba Hall. What did Pickel think of the situation, and how the team responded? Next, he gives you who he thought was notable during the lifting session.

T-Frank then brings up two freshmen in running back Nick Singleton and defensive tackle Zane Durant. New strength coach Chuck Losey singled out two players as having exceptional winter conditioning workouts among the first-year players. Then, he asks Greg to fill listeners in on what Losey had to say about the young quarterbacks who enrolled in January. T-Frank follows up with his impressions of the young gunslingers during his evaluation process. He thinks what Losey said should give fans even more hope about the future of five-star quarterback Drew Allar.

Next, Pickel fills T-Frank in on what he saw from Penn State's injured or absent players in 2021. Hakeem Beamon, Adisa Isaac, and PJ Mustipher were all at the liftings session, and Pickel gave his thoughts about what they looked like in that setting. While the details about Mustipher's injury aren't precise, T-Frank thinks he has a good idea of the timeline for his return based on what he saw on Thursday.

They shift to the young defensive linemen that lifted on Thursday because T-Frank spent a good bit of time watching them lift. Fatorma Mulbah and Jordan van den Berg both drew praise from Losey, and T-Frank now thinks they can be contributors this spring at the tackle position. Along with his observations of Amin Vanover's build, that gives some insight into the depth and talent this spring. However, Pickel disagrees and gives his reason why.

After that, they shift to Penn State's young offensive line and discuss Olu Fashanu and Landon Tengwall. How did they look? T-Frank and Pickel discuss what they saw from each.

Finally, they wrap up the show with a preview of the Big Ten Wrestling Tournament, which is coming up this weekend. Penn State may be the favorite to win the tournament, but Pickel thinks it won't be a walk in the park. He details the areas that Penn State needs to get support, the key wrestlers, and highlights matchups that everyone should hope they get to see in the finals.

Penn State football is hard at work getting ready to face Purdue in Week One of the 2022 season, and so is film analyst Thomas Frank Carr. Today, he and senior editor Nate Bauer flip spots on the BWI Daily Edition so Bauer can ask questions of T-Frank and find out what he saw on film. 

To start, T-Frank and Bauer asks T-Frank to describe the overall scheme for Purdue and how the defense functions for the Boilermakers. However, T-Frank takes a different approach by describing the players that Purdue lost and how that changes what they might want to do on defense. Then, he follows back up to explain how the scheme flows from the defensive line. Without first-round edge rusher George Karlaftis bringing the heat on quarterbacks, can Purdue be as successful in 2022? T-Frank points to Murray State transfer Scotty Humpich as a potential solution and gives his thoughts on the talents of the transfer edge rusher. 

Next, they discuss the secondary and what Purdue likes to do defensively. T-Frank describes how conservative or aggressive the team is and what coverages they like to play. 

From there, he talks about the strength of the Purdue defense, which is up the middle. He is impressed by senior defensive tackle Branson Deen and his ability to cause havoc on the interior. But can Penn State control Deen and fellow returning starter Lawrence Johnson? Bauer digs deeper into that group, and T-Frank gives his thoughts.

Fitz and Snyder update fans on the competition for Penn State's open quarterback spot between Washington and borderline five-star passer Matt Zollers. Snyder explains how the timeline for the two quarterbacks ultimately affect the decision if there is one for Penn State.

The tight end board is an equally promising section of Penn State's recruiting efforts in 2023. Four-start tight end Andrew Olesh visits the program Thursday, but the team has several other top prospects interested in the program. Can the Lions land another elite tight end? We discuss the potential for the team to add to its stacked roster.

Fitz broke down Penn State's cornerback board last week in an in-depth article focusing on the major players at the position. In their return to the Bryce Jordan Center last night, Penn State basketball got a massive win with a 90-86 victory over Iowa. Reporter Dave Eckert joins the BWI Daily Edition to give his thoughts on the game.

Host Thomas Frank Carr starts Eckert at the end of the game where Iowa, down for most of the game, forced overtime. How unusual was the play that extended the contest to two overtimes? Eckert details what happened in the final minutes of a game that Penn State controlled for most of the evening.

After that, they discuss the overtime period and how the game-tying tip-in from Keegan Murray affected Penn State in the extra minutes. Finally, Eckert details the key players in overtime and how head coach Micah Shrewsberry navigated had his team respond.

From there, they work back to regulation and discuss just how rare the performance from big men John Harrar and Greg Lee was. Both were outstanding on the night to a level that, according to Eckert, Penn State hasn't seen in quite some time. However, they had to do the bulk of the work to get Penn State in position to close the game out in the final minutes becuase one key element was missing from the Nittany Lions attack. Eckert details what that was and how it led to a slum in the middle minutes of the game.

After wrapping up their discussion about last night, they move on to Penn State's upcoming game against Wisconsin this weekend. Eckert previews what waits ahead of the Nittany Lions in Madison and how the game might unfold.

From there, they move on to discuss Penn State Hockey. The team has struggled this season, and Eckert gives his thoughts about what has been going on for head coach Guy Gadowski's squad.
