27 Jun 202416: How She Grew Her Consulting Firm from 6 to 7 Figures with Karen DeYoung00:39:05

Did you know that less than 2% of women ever build a business to seven figures or beyond in annual revenue? Get ready to be inspired!

Karen DeYoung, who owns DeYoung Consulting Services based out of Minneapolis, joins me to  share her business journey building a SEVEN figure consulting firm.

I had the honor of coaching Karen DeYoung for three years from 2017 to 2019 and helping her grow from six figures to multi-six figures. When we first met, she was only working with contractors and I remember her taking that big step of hiring her first full time consultant.

Karen and I both hope that her story of steady growth inspires other women, including other black women, to consider the possbiilties of what they might create.

02 Dec 202438: [coaching] Exploring a Signature Offer with Jenny Kontos00:48:58
***Currently reviewing applications for 2025 1:1 Coaching and Impact Collective Mastermind!***
The majority of consultants start off as GENERALISTS and over time find they need to POSITION themselves as an expert in the marketplace by either "specializing" by the services they offer or by "niching" the clients they serve AND in some cases they do both.

Jenny Kontos niched her marketing agency, Hillhouse Creative, in 2021 to only serve established nonprofit clients and this streamlined many of her business development activities and focused her team.

In this coaching session, I surprise Jenny by suggesting she position her business further by SPECIALIZING her services with a signature offer.

We discuss the pros and cons of this shift, strategies for client acquisition, and the importance of maintaining long-term client relationships plus best next steps.

Spoiler alert: changing your positioning for your NEXT clients does not need to impact your current and favorite clients!

23 Sep 202429: Build a Lean Dream Team00:19:18

My clients do NOT yearn to have a massive team, but they DO want to hire some support so they can focus on their zone of genius -- the work that they love and is most highly valued by clients.

In fact, you can build a highly profitable consulting busines with a LEAN DREAM TEAM!

The challenge in leading a small business, is that EVERY team member needs to be high performing. Listen for all the details.

Remember your team includes anyone you pay to support you — either in your business, or in your personal life.

20 Jan 202542: Why Generalists Struggle to Hire (And How Tight Positioning Makes It Easier)00:18:13

New coaching clients often share they don't know how to hire another consultant. They say things like,  "I don’t know how to find someone that knows all the things I know and who can work with clients in all the ways I work with them."

The truth is, they are right. Most people who have all of their capabilities alreay have their own business or are running an organization. They are not available for hire and if they were it would likely be too expensive to have them on your team.

When you do a lot of types of work for different types and sizes of organizations, hiring decisions feel overwhelming because there’s no clarity on the exact skills or expertise needed.

The solution is to focus on positioning your buisness away from being a generalist.

Once you specialize by what you do and/or niche by the organizations you serve, it simplifies everything in your business including hiring.

CASE STUDY: Using examples from fundraising, I cover how targeting particular services or clients can facilitate easier hiring, more efficient team building, and ultimately, business growth

17 Oct 202432: Boundaries with Team00:28:38

Once you have team members, a good portion of your time needs to be devoted to leading them by coaching, training and providing feedback. 04 Nov 202435: 5 Watchouts for a High Ticket Project00:19:01

***Currently reviewing applications for 2025 1:1 Coaching and Impact Collective Mastermind!***   High ticket projects which I define it as a project anywhere from $25K to $300K and everything in between require more sophistication in several areas to protect yourself as a business owner.

High ticket projects are normally delivered over the course of several months and for multi-six figure projects, those can extend beyond a year and even up to 3 years.

While the big project numbers I just shared likely sounds amazing, there are several things that make this type of business more complicated.

I have 5 watchouts to cover with you in this training episode.

1) Longer Sales Cycle

2) Pricing

3) Scope Creep

4) Project Management

5) Advance Cash Flow Techniques Required

This episode is an example of things that I help my clients with regularly and demonstrates how I teach and train.

03 Feb 202544: Unspoken Challenges of Scaling a Consulting Firm from $200K to $500K00:31:01

Welcome to a MASTERCLASS on scaling a consulting business from $200K to $500K.

This phase of business has one of the STEEPEST LEARNING CURVES because so much is changing at once. If you feel overwhelmed, you’re not alone—this is the stage where every major area of your business shifts simultaneously.

In this episode, I dive into the unspoken challenges that occur as you grow toward $500K, including changes in your clients, team, finances, operations, mindset, and leadership.

I have personally listened to A LOT of podcasts about growing a business and have never heard this phase addressed in the comprehensive way I do in this episode.

Drawing from my work with nonprofit consultants and service providers, I break down why this stage of business growth can feel overwhelming, why so few coaches specialize in it, and the key transformations you need to navigate successfully.

If you’re in this growth phase, know that you’re not alone. There’s a path through the messy middle, and I’m here to guide you through it.

***Please share this with at least one other consultant today.***

15 Jul 202419: Do You Have a Chaos Business?00:23:55

The three pillars in my model of an ENDURING business are that it is enjoyable, profitable AND sustainable.

It is common to have seasons where any of the above are out of sync, but long term we won’t stay in business if all three pillars are not addressed.

In this episode, we provide actionable steps to help you get out of overwhelm and “chaos” and build a business that endures.

If you could use support in your business, consider our mastermind with 1:1 coaching and a retreat.

27 May 202407: Scope Creep with Nonprofit Clients00:24:54

One of the most universal issues Nonprofit Consultants face is Scope Creep. This is when clients ask you to do tasks and projects beyond your original work agreement (assuming you have one 😬).

There are ways to prevent scope creep from the beginning of an engagement and also ways to change course if you are already knee deep in projects you never intended to say yes to, but already did.

🎉 The good news is that we LOVE helping clients through this and to maintain boundaries in relationships with clients.

Join my colleague Elizabeth Cook and I talk as we cover how to set boundaries, how establishing policies makes things easier, and how to handle difficult conversations with clients.

05 Aug 202422: Just Because You Can, Doesn't Mean You Should00:13:25

Seizing every opportunity that comes your way isn't always the best strategy.

Doing all the tasks you “can” do in your business and home, may inhibit your business growth and lead to overwhelm.

But how do you know what tasks to do and what not to do?

How do you decide what opportunities to say yes to and what to decline?

Elizabeth Cook, who coaches alongside me in our programs, joins me as we discuss practical filters for assessing opportunities, the importance of strategic thinking, and even provide scripts for gracefully declining offers that don’t align with your goals.

If you’re striving to build an enduring business while keeping your mission front and center, this episode is a must-listen!

13 Jun 202412: The Power of Specializing - Leah Roman’s Public Health Consulting Success00:38:15

One of the things I teach in my coaching programs is that you can position your nonprofit consulting firm in the marketplace by specializing by the work you do, niching by who you do it for, or both!

Our guest today has found success by specializing!

Leah Roman, of Roman Public Health Consulting, joins me to share her path from accidental consultant, who did lots of different types of work for public health nonprofits, to SPECIALIZING in e-learning solutions for adult learners.

While Leah has always maintained a referral based business, she found that once she specialized from doing many different types of work for clients to only offering instructional design support, that the QUALITY of her referrals increased.

Leah’s desire to create community and serve others has followed her in every role, so naturally she founded and continues to host a free community for public health consultants that has been fostering collaboration and connection for several years.

Also, it was lovely to hear how Leah’s Mom's work in healthcare inspired her career path and that she remains one of her biggest supporters and fans!
