Much of the work that Katy created over her public radio career was made possible by Doug's technical abilities. She was asked to create an audio obituary for him, a project she accepted with a trepidation, considering her long professional relationship with him. In doing so, she got to know her former colleague on a deeper, more personal, level. Here's the result.

Lots of people pack up the ghostly decor come November, but in truth, November is the real month of the dead, starting with All Saints' Day on the first and All Souls on the second. (Halloween is really only the preview.) On this ghostly episode, we chat about the origins of halloween and how they are connected to more religions than you might expect. We also share a few ghost stories that were shared by some of our listeners during our recent live virtual meet-up event for our Patreon supporters and long-time donors. We often chat with expats on The Bittersweet Life, whether they are corporate expats off to a new country every other year, passion expats who follow their dream of living in a foreign land, or anything in between. But what about the expat spouse? What about the person who never signed up for the expat life but finds themselves living it anyway?

This week we talk with Beth M. Howard, author of the new memoir, Hausfrau Honeymoon: Love, Language, and Other Misadventures in Germany. She tells the story of her challenging years as a “trailing spouse” in Germany, how despite her best efforts, she just couldn’t seem to find happiness there.

But when you’re a trailing spouse expat, you can’t just pick up and leave whenever you like. What happens when the success of your marriage hangs on whether or not you can tough it out in a country you don’t like living in? What happens when, try as you might, you can’t manage to learn your new husband’s (and new country’s) native tongue? What happens when the man who seemed so evolved in your country turns out to be a bit of a chauvinist in his?

Well, if you’re a writer, you curl up in a cozy coffee house and write a book about it, of course! In this interview, Beth reveals the power of admitting that a place just isn’t right for you, accepting that the glamorous expat existence you imagined is actually quite lonely, and discovering that sometimes the biggest adventure of all is moving back home.

Tiffany joins us from the Spanish Steps for this mini-episode, where glorious azalea plants are spilling down the steps and there is nary a tourist in sight. May 2021 the first—and most likely the last—time it will be possible to see the Spanish Steps this way.

As Tiffany marvels at the spectacle, she also marvels at how fast Italians seem to be able to transition in and out of the country's various lockdowns and restrictions. Every time the city opens back up, it almost feel like there was never any pandemic at all. Why is that?

She’s bored of her job, she’s not overly attached to San Francisco, her lease is up in September, and she’s yearning for something new. One way to get some direction is to go to a psychic or a medium, someone who has a vision that goes beyond the everyday, perhaps even beyond the realm of the living. Katy and Lynn take the show into the studio of a psychic medium to get his insight on the direction Lynn should take next.

Since Victorian times, people have been obsessed with Jack the Ripper. There are endless volumes full of history about him and the gory deaths of his five victims. What's missing is information about the lives of the women he killed—until now.

This week, we sit down with Hallie Rubenhold, social historian and author of the recently published book, The Five: The Untold Lives of the Women Killed by Jack the Ripper.

In this eye-opening interview, we discover that, contrary to popular narrative, Jack the Ripper’s victims were almost certainly not all prostitutes. Rubenhold has painstakingly reconstructed the previously untold stories of these five women, whose greatest tragedy was not being in the wrong place at the wrong time, but rather being born women in the Victorian era.

Instead of focusing on these women’s deaths, as virtually all study pertaining to the mystery of Jack the Ripper does, Rubenhold instead focuses on these women’s lives, which have been roundly ignored by historians until now. The story of each woman provides a portrait of the underbelly of Victorian London, as well as gives incredible insight into the entire Victorian period, highlighting the vivid contrast between rich and poor and demonstrates how unbelievably precarious life was for women, particularly lower-class women, of the time.

Rome is crumbling...just as it has been for centuries. But what does it say about us adopted Romans that we choose to live in a city's whose glory days are all in the past?

Why do so many of us, who can't even use the excuse that this is our native land, choose to live here, often at considerable financial and professional inconvenience, despite how little it has to offer us? Why do we leave in frustration only to return again and again, as if it were "more familiar, more intimately our home, than even the spot where we were born"?

The inspiration for today's episode comes from one line (albeit a very long line) from Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel, The Marble Faun. (The quote in its entirety can be found here.)

It leads us to made a rather stark comparison: is living in Rome a bit like being in an abusive relationship?

Bonus: turns out ancient Romans complained about the city's traffic problems too! And apparently, Juvenal coined the term "traffic jam" back in the 1st century AD. We discuss one of his quotes, which can be found here.

Rome in August. It’s hot, it’s sticky and it’s surprisingly empty. August is the month in which Romans desert the city en masse and head for the seashore or the mountains, searching for a welcome respite from the sizzling city heat. Many shopkeepers and restaurant owners take part in the exodus as well, so shuttered shop windows and the ubiquitous “chiuso per ferie” (closed the for holidays) signs are a common sight.

But if you're worried you'll have a terrible time during Roman August, never fear, Tiffany is here! Amy Herman is an art expert who trains members of law enforcement, intelligence agents, counter-terrorist specialists, and healthcare professionals to enhance their observation skills by learning to look at works of art. Amy is the founder of The Art of Perception, and the author of Visual Intelligence.

In this episode, Amy and Katy visit the Whitney Museum in New York, and they discuss how observing art is a teachable skill, and why it holds the key to heightening our awareness in our day-to-day lives. Amy asks Katy to describe some of the works of art they are seeing, a fascinating study in why we notice what we notice.

At 22, Hannah has lived in France for the better part of two years, first as a study-abroad student, then as an English teacher. Tiffany sits down with Hannah to talk about how she was able to integrate into French culture so thoroughly in such a short period of time, how she became fluent in French in record time, and what led her to move back to France three days after graduation.

She also reveals that despite her passion for the country, she’s decided to move back home, although she’s leaving a door open to move back to France one day. She gives valuable advice on other study-abroad students on how to get the most out their expat experience.

Seven years ago, Katy and her sisters—who each live in different states—started gathering once a year for “Sisterfest.” But this year they are doing something different.

When they were little girls growing up outside Seattle, they watched a little-known 1980 movie called Midnight Madness. It became a kind of cult classic in their house, and everything about it somehow took on a special meaning. On this Sisterfest, Katy, Dana, and Sara trace all the film’s stops around Los Angeles, complete with custom t-shirts and even a chat with the writers and directors.

What is wonder? And how does it affect your life? Perhaps most importantly, what can we do to harness it?

Today we are joined by Andrea Scher, author of Wonder Seeker: 52 Ways to Wake Up Your Creativity and Find Your Joy, a playful, practical, and effective guide to finding wonder and joy in your daily life. Andrea’s passion and life’s work is to cultivate a sense of wonder, and to help others do the same.

She discusses how her need for wonder has grown out of her innate sensitivity, anxiety, fear, and past trauma, and how actively scanning for the good things in life can help her let go of anxiety and choose joy instead.

Andrea explains how life-changing it can be to simply scan the world for wonder instead of danger, as we are biologically wired to do. How asking yourself “How can I make this more fun and easy?” will transform even the dullest of tasks. She also talks about how being open to wonder can even make you a kinder person.

Memory is the buzz word on The Bittersweet Life this week! Monday's episode was all about autobiographical memory, and on this mini-episode, Katy's dad Dale stops by to talk about the challenges and rewards of memorizing a speech of prose as opposed to rhyming rhythmic poetry.

The wait is over—at long last, you can finally go to Italy again! But is it a good idea?

According to a recent announcement, the Italian government is not waiting for the EU "green pass" to welcome travelers from outside the EU this summer, but are instead launching their own version a month earlier, that could see the country open up to tourists from around the world in less than a week.

It's a huge relief to anyone in the tourist or tourist-adjacent sectors in Italy (and Italophiles around the world are thrilled), but is it too soon? Just a few weeks ago, Italians could't even sit outside at a bar or restaurant, and just a few weeks before that, they could barely leave their homes or see their loved ones. The vaccine rollout in Italy has so far been very slow, and infection rate is still high. Could letting in tourists en masse (even vaccinated ones) create a new wave of illness?

This week, we discuss our conflicting feelings over Italy's new plan, and Tiffany asks Katy when she plans to come visit.

Have you ever walked into someone’s house in Japan with your shoes on and had a room full of people laugh at you? (Katy has.) Have you ever traipsed into a room in an Italian home that has been freshly mopped and been given the evil eye by the lady of the house? (Tiffany has.)

Part of living in a foreign culture is learning (often the hard way) that some things that are totally acceptable back home are, at best, a faux pas in your adopted country, and, at worst, a humiliating gaff. Picking up on the social rules of your new country is part of adjusting to life abroad. To a certain extent, all expats go through it.

But what makes things rude in one culture and acceptable in another? What does it say about the people of those countries, and what they value? Why is it ok to litter on the street in Italy, but not ok to wash your hands in the kitchen sink? Why is it fine, in Italy, to wave to get your waiter’s attention, but unspeakably rude to leave a shop without saying “grazie, arrivederci”—the exact opposite of which is true in the US?

And what happens when you pick up habits that are perfectly acceptable in your new country, and take them back home with you, where they are seen as downright rude? (Case in point: after a one-year stint in Rome, polite, mild-mannered Katy has taken to cutting lines, a heinous crime in America and merely an eye-rolling annoyance in Italy.) 

We discuss these social conundrums and etiquette paradoxes and try to make sense of it all on this week’s new episode, {RUDE}.

There's nothing like a complete political meltdown in your home country to make you feel utterly alone in your adopted one.

Tiffany opens up about her feelings of isolation in the wake of the Kavanaugh debacle raging across the pond. When you are consumed for weeks on end with a political story that no one in your day-to-day life understands, it's easy to feel cut off.
