25 Nov 2024 | What Does Having a Healthy Baby Mean? - 56 | 00:42:45
In this episode of the Birth Rebel podcast, Angel delves into the concept of what it truly means to have a healthy baby. She explores how the current standard often emphasizes merely having an alive baby and argues for a deeper understanding of health that includes long-term physical, mental, emotional, and immune health. Angel emphasizes the perinatal period as a holistic phase from conception to one year postpartum, advocating for integrated care for both mother and baby. She critiques the modern reliance on 'scientific mothering,' highlighting the loss of intuitive mothering wisdom passed down through generations. Angel also discusses the importance of skin-to-skin contact, or kangaroo care, for the newborn’s immediate and long-term health, bonding, and immune system. 01 Apr 2023 | Skin to Skin Series: Introducing A New Type of Doula: The Kangaroula -30 | 00:59:01
Madison and I talk about the unique job of being Kangaroulas, a unique birth worker that was developed by Dr. Nils Bergman and his wife Jills Bergman to focus on bonding and attachment of baby and mother. We also talk about our unique premature baby stories. Madison Hendry (aka Mama Bird), transitioned into motherhood in 2014. As a visual artist and recent graduate in 2011 with a Master of Fine Arts in Sculpture from Brooklyn College, Brooklyn, NY, she began to see a shift in her artwork, career, and perspective on life. Her artwork has been exhibited and published internationally and included in pioneering events such as Project AfterBirth; the first-ever international exhibition based on the subject of early parenthood. With the premature birth of her second son, Madison became fascinated with the dynamics of the mother/infant relationship. She realized her touch, sound, smell, milk, and relationship with him were not only beneficial; she was essential and played an active role in his development. The process of having a premature infant taught her to listen to her instincts and her child's needs and respond to them. Madison received a scholarship and completed her Breastfeeding Educator Certification with Birth Arts International in 2018. She went on to become a Certified Birth Doula with BirthWorks Int. And Certified Kangaroula with Jill & Dr. Nils Bergman in 2020. Madison has over 9 years (and counting) of personal breastfeeding experience. She lives in a 1950s Sears Home in Cleveland, OH suburbs with her husband, tattooer, Angus Hendry, two boys, Angus and Huckleberry, daughter, Evergreen, and a baby on the way. Episodes in this Series:1. Skin to Skin Series: Introducing A New Type of Doula: The Kangaroula -30 2. What is skin to skin and why it's vital to improving infant health and mortality -31 3. 25 Mar 2023 | HOT TAKE: Challenging Mainstream Birth Work Norms and the Role of Doulas - 29 | 00:35:34
In this episode of the Birth Cafe podcast, host Angel Coleman discusses her evolving views on the necessity of doulas, pointing out that not everyone benefits from or values having a doula during birth. She shares her experience and observations to argue against the mainstream belief that everyone should have a doula, stating that some individuals may not fully utilize or understand a doula's services, which can lead to wasted resources. Additionally, Coleman expresses concern over insurance companies covering doula services, fearing it could lead to a lack of appreciation for doulas' skills and increased control over the profession by the healthcare system. She also advocates for doulas to be recognized as patient advocates and possibly reclassified as bodyworkers to allow for more comprehensive training in physical support techniques. 00:00 Welcome to the Birth Cafe Podcast! 00:33 Diving into Hot Topics: The Doula Debate 07:29 The Controversy of Insurance Coverage for Doulas 18:36 Advocacy: A Core Aspect of Doula Work 28:01 Exploring the Role of Doulas as Body Workers 32:13 Engaging with the Audience: Your Thoughts? 20 Nov 2023 | What is Radical Accountability with Nathan Riley - 38 | 00:56:28
In this episode, we dive into the world of Radical Accountability with special guest Nathan Riley. The conversation kicks off with a shared frustration towards the conventional medical model for childbirth, especially in the United States where 99 percent of births happen in hospitals. The alarming rise in induction and C-section rates, averaging close to 40 percent nationally, sparks a crucial discussion on accountability. Nathan Riley, a passionate advocate for radical responsibility, challenges the common narrative of blaming healthcare professionals and institutions while neglecting personal responsibility. The episode explores the disruptive potential of making the existing system obsolete and emphasizes the need for individuals to invest resources, energy, and willpower in preventing reliance on hospitals. Nathan is a father of two, the second of home was born at home. He’s married to his high school sweetheart, Stephanie. He grows food, reads more than he probably should, and enjoys coffee, mountain biking, and being in nature. He and his wife are perennial Burners. Nathan is also a psychonaut, procuring his own ceremonial medicines for fellow travelers. In his spare time, he supports clients through fertility challenges, pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. He also supports fathers-to-be through the spiritual transformation of childbirth. He manages a private practice called Beloved Holistics, a private contract association. He also attends home births, and he provides collaborative care for midwives across the country who struggle to find a friendly OBGYN with whom to consult on clients. 10 Sep 2022 | Opinion: Why race doesn't matter when picking a provider - 08 | 00:25:21
Maternal Mortality is a huge concern and many lately have been focusing on Maternal Mortality rates among BIPOC women. There's been a huge push in having more BIPOC people join the medical field to help lower rates. However, when looking at the structure of medical school and health care system I believe that will not help the rates.
