24 Feb 2023 | Bonding with Baby isn't Always Easy: Ronnie's Birth Story | 00:37:05
Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle! Today I am chatting with a new mama who found me at the end of her second pregnancy. Ronnie is married to her high school sweetheart and mama to a son and a daughter. Ronnie had a traumatic cesarean in 2020, leading her to seek a VBAC birth when she was pregnant again. Ronnie sent me this lovely email, "You were the only birth-related blogger/podcaster that didn’t make me feel ashamed for being so uneducated about and traumatized by my first birth. I felt so broken after my traumatic c-section. I thought my body was a failure, I was weak, and my babies were just too big. Then…you. You and my (new) very supportive doctor gave me the confidence to jump in head first and pursue a VBAC. Thank you. I feel whole again. I found you, and you gave me the confidence I needed to push through! I had a very redemptive VBAC last November…and I feel like a new woman!" We chatted about her VBAC birth experience and how she was surprised that her bond with the baby didn't happen off the bat. Mama, this is normal and doesn't mean you are a bad mom. When you first bring your newborn home, it can be hard to figure out what to do. Here are some tips to help you and your new baby bond more easily. It's normal to feel like you're not bonding with your newborn. You're exhausted, and it can feel like your baby is just an extra thing you have to care for in addition to your other responsibilities. The most important thing you can do is give them a safe environment, so they feel secure and loved. Make sure that you and your partner have time together with the baby. This will help you feel connected to each other and ensure everyone meets their needs. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s important to remember that this is a big change for everyone—for you, your partner, and your family members—and there are many ways people can get support when they need it. If something isn’t working for you or someone else, don’t hesitate to reach out! Here are some tips and tricks to help you overcome the initial hurdles and enjoy this incredible experience. 1. Take time for yourself. It's crucial that you set aside time for yourself so that you can recharge your batteries and come back to parenting with a fresh perspective. 2. Have realistic expectations about what kind of parent you will be. Don't expect to be perfect at first—or ever! You won't have all the answers, and it's okay not to know exactly what you're doing. If your baby is safe and healthy, everything else will eventually fall into place! 3. Accept help from others when it's offered (and don't feel guilty about taking advantage). Accept offers of help when your friends and family suggest them--especially when you are so tired that you feel you can't do anything right. People who know you well will not be offended if you ask them to hold your baby while you shower or if they take the baby while you go to the store for diapers. People who love you want to help, and this is an excellent opportunity for all of you to get to know each other better! Here's a tidbit of our conversation: "My husband goes to take a shower and I'm doing bedtime with my toddler. I'm sitting on his bed and singing a song. We're doing the whole bedtime thing. Then I just have a moment of going, oh no, and quickly stand up so that my water doesn't break on his bed. However, I stood up and my water broke all over my toddler's bedroom floor, my mom's brain was like, don't let your water break on your toddler. Then he was very nice and asked if I peed myself. I said, Yes! And he said, mommy, we're not supposed to do that in the middle of the floor." Resources: Ready to be empowered & Prepared for Birth, Take a Birth Class NOW! Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle! Trish educates on how to push like a pro during labor using purposeful positioning and pushing that makes sense, emphasizing the importance of education and listening to your instincts. This episode encourages you to take control of your birthing experience by understanding labor stages, learning about different pushing positions, and trusting your instincts. Trish cannot emphasize enough the value of being educated to minimize fear and anxiety, while sharing practical advice for preventing 3rd to 4th degree tearing, and advocating for your own birthing preferences. “You have to understand the stages of labor, because the movements that you do pre labor, during early labor, during active labor, during transition, and during pushing are so different in some ways. And it all really depends on the passenger, the baby. So, you have to be educated, you have to take an evidence based birth class so that you can recognize what stage of labor you're in, and you have to take a class that teaches you how to move your body. Your body is powerful, and your voice is critical in the labor room.” - Trish 01:53 The Importance of Education in Birth 05:28 Trusting Your Instincts During Birth 10:10 Mindset and Preparation for Pushing 11:52 Purposeful Positioning To Push like a Pro 17:15 The Power of Gravity in Labor 19:57 Understanding Baby's Station 20:59 Understanding the Urge to Push 21:45 Laboring Down with an Epidural 23:35 The Importance of Laboring Down 27:43 Empowering Your Voice in the Labor Room 29:45 Making Informed Decisions 32:07 Preparing for Your Birth Experience 35:49 Join Our Birth Classes and Community 38:25 Final Thoughts and Encouragement More from this episode: Go to http://labornursemama.com/join and use code “LOVE” for $100 off LNM courses! 20 Oct 2023 | We Need to Talk About Pregnancy Loss: Forget Me Not | 00:37:43
Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle! Today's episode will be one that no one wants to have to talk about but it is the side of labor and delivery that is not happy smiles and laughter. Labor and delivery nurses have the most incredible job in the world. We have the honor of standing in the presence of your family's most wonderful moment in history, the birth of a family member. But there is a side to birth that many do not talk about, which has to be honored because many parents experience it, and that is the loss of their little one. This episode is dedicated to the many babies who are born sleeping, and as I write this, I am crying because my entire life has been affected by the loss of a newborn. My sister, Michelle, came into this world sleeping, forever changing my mother's heart. In 2013, amidst the turmoil of experiencing the first of three miscarriages, my niece brought her daughter, Alivia, into the world, asleep forever in the arms of Jesus. Grief has left an indescribable mark on my family, touching us in ways words fail to capture. Today's guest is sharing how she is impacting the world of newborn loss and educating those who care for the ones who have been devastated. Listen as we chat about the other side of birth. 02 Jun 2023 | The Incredible Benefits You Need to Know About Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy & For Newborns: Dr.Kim Tran | 00:38:08
Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle! Join Dr. Kim Tran and me as we break down the incredible ways seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy can make all the difference in the world. At least your world! Dr. Tran is a pregnancy and pediatric Chiropractor from Houston, TX. She also does functional nutrition, focusing on gut health and hormones. She has 4 kids, 3 girls, and a boy. From Dr. Tran: "Chiropractic care during pregnancy looks at the power, passage, and passenger. The power is nervous system health and making sure power to the uterus is nice and strong. That way, the uterus can function at 100% and contract/relax properly when it's time. The passage is about Mom's pelvis and its surrounding structures. It’s so important that the spine and pelvis are in good alignment during pregnancy. A misalignment in the pelvis can cause instability and surrounding muscles/ligaments to be pulled in an uncomfortable direction. This can cause discomfort during pregnancy. Babies are super smart and will go wherever and in whatever position is comfortable for the baby. Baby is the passenger. We always want to ensure mom is aligned so the baby is in the best position for birth. Then after birth, it's always good to get the baby checked as well. Baby has been in utero in awkward positions for months. During the check, I’m looking to see if there are any Torticollis, primitive reflexes intact and strong, oral restrictions, cranial shape, range of motion, and misalignments. Checking babies is super gentle; any adjustments are with no more pressure than you’d check a ripe avocado or tomato. Getting babies checked during the first year of life is great! I like making sure babies are developing well and hitting all developmental milestones. Then if they’re not, what’s going on there and how to address it?" 11 Oct 2024 | Changing the Birth Culture through Evidence Based Birth with Dr. Rebecca Dekker | 00:35:02
Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle! Trish is excited to welcome Dr. Rebecca Dekker to the podcast! Dr. Dekker is a PhD, RN, and the founder of Evidence Based Birth®. Dr. Rebecca Dekker had a traumatic birth experience when she trusted doctors to do what was best for her, and was shocked after finding out the care she got was not evidence-based. Doctors advised restricted food and drink, bed rest, and an epidural, only to end up with a vacuum-assisted delivery and separation from her newborn baby. For her second child, she opted for a midwife-assisted birth, even though it was illegal in her state. She’s now looking to change parents’ mindsets during pregnancy to question if the care they are being provided is the right one for them and what alternatives they should have access to. As a RN for two decades, she’s experienced firsthand (as a nurse, researcher, and mother) that routine care in hospitals is not tailored and can even be harmful at times. The conversation centers around empowering women through education and understanding during childbirth. This episode highlights critical topics such as the importance of finding your voice, individualized birth plans, and the significance of evidence-based care and informed decision making. Also covered are common concerns around inductions, particularly for gestational diabetes, and how to engage confidently with healthcare providers. They emphasize the value of a supportive birth community and continuous learning for both parents and birth practitioners. 00:54 Exciting Guest Introduction: Dr. Rebecca Dekker 02:57 Dr. Rebecca Dekker's Birth Story and Realizations 07:37 The Creation of Evidence Based Birth 10:31 Empowering Women in Childbirth 19:42 Discussing Inductions and Gestational Diabetes 28:21 Navigating Provider Relationships and Birth Choices 33:45 Conclusion and How to Connect Connect with Dr. Rebecca Dekker: Connect with her on Instagram @ebbirth Listen to the Evidence Based Birth Podcast Resources: Join our 5 Days to A Fearless Birth Experience and watch 5 Online Birth Classes FOR FREE!! 🎙 FREE Birth Workshop: 3 Secrets to a Confident Birth! 🎙 Want to feel prepared and in control? 09 Jun 2022 | All about Pain Relief Options During Birth: Which Work Best? | 00:26:50
Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle! One of the biggest questions you might ask yourself before you have your baby, is this: "How will I handle the pain of labor?". You have choices. That is the first thing I want you to focus on. After that I want you to be educated on what causes the pain and how you can lean into it, prior to utilizing your pain management plan. Labor pain is not a pain that you should fear, it is a pain that is necessary to bring you the baby. During birth, there are pretty much 3 common options for pain control: Analgesics, Anesthetics, Nitrous Oxide, and Unmedicated options. Today we talked about the first three options which all fall into the medicated pain management options. Analgesics include IV narcotics such as Nubain, Stadol, Morphine, Fentanyl (which works the best in my opinion), and sometimes Demerol. Analgesics do not take the pain away, rather they lessen the pain, and still allow you to move somewhat freely. They cross the placenta and affect the baby, for this reason, they can not be given later in active labor. Nitrous Oxide is another option for pain relief. It does not eliminate the pain. is administered through a face mask during the contractions. Once you remove the mask, the effects are almost gone immediately. Many women love this option as it allows movement throughout labor. I have found that some women love it and some women hate it. An epidural is the most favored option for pain management during labor. It is considered an anesthetic and if it works properly will eliminate the pain. I teach my students to not solely rely on it being the savior of the day, as there are many times an epidural might not work out. Always have a backup plan. I hope this episode helped you understand pain relief options during labor. I would be so grateful if you hit subscribe and write a review!! Resources: Take my free birth workshop now! Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle! Today's guest, Taylor Mckay, is our team doula over here at Labor Nurse Mama, and we adore her. Of course, we talk about her birth experience and why her birth led to her dream of becoming a doula. According to AmericanPregnancy.org, a doula is "The doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. They aim to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience." Inside our birth classes, we felt it very important to provide our students with multiple support layers, including a doula. So last year, we brought Taylor or board; it was the BEST decision ever!! Listen in as we break down the significance of the presence of a doula during your birth. Resources: Ready to be empowered & Prepared for Birth? Take a Birth Class NOW!
