20 Jan 2023VBAC Lab Student Birth Story: Gina00:52:23

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

On today's episode, I'm talking to one of my VBAC Lab students, Gina.

She is a mom of 2, whose first birth was a cesarean due to a string of events that lead to complications.

So when she got pregnant with her second baby, Gina wanted the birth that she didn't get originally and set out to learn everything she could about having a VBAC.

Prepped with what she learned throughout our birth course, The VBAC Lab, her second birth experience was completely different than the previous one, and even though it did end up as a cesarean as well, the experience was completely different because she was armed with all the knowledge she gained and she was the one calling the shots.

Gina's birth story speaks of resilience in healing–through the ups and downs before and after giving birth.

Tune in as we discuss:

- What Gina experienced with her first birth and how she gained the strength to keep going

-How Gina prepared for her VBAC

- What hindered her from having a successful VBAC

- How she handled her second cesarean birth

Today's topic is one that many of us do not want to chat about but, it is so relevant as you begin your mothering journey.

The things that cause the Mother Wound can be different for each person. Do not compare yourself to someone else who may have had it "worse". Comparison will not help you heal. You deserve to heal! And your wound is yours alone.

Join me as Maranda and I breakdown the Mama wound and she shares the following insights

The Mother Wound is a hurt that can come from:

  • Experiences in childhood like trauma, abuse, or neglect.
  • Not being supported or having communication issues with mom.
  • Feeling pressure to put other people's needs first instead of your own.

Wounds from your family of origin and specifically your mama can make you feel bad in different ways.

Some common symptoms are:

  • Low self-esteem
  • Depression and anxiety
  • Difficulty forming healthy relationships

29 Apr 2022Here’s What You Need To Know About Labor Induction: Plus My Opinion00:27:35

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

Today we are breaking down getting induced. We talk about medical and elective induction.

You have a choice mama. You do not have to be induced if there is not medical indication. Being past due is not legit unless there is something else going on that makes out safer than in.

I am all about you making choices for your plan of care. Do not make emotional choices. Ask for time to think, and unless there is an emergent reason, this is reasonable.

Top 10 birth fears and How to overcome them is our topic today!

I am a huge fan of tackling fear by the ...you know, and throwing it out.

Here's What I am talking about today:

The unknowns of birth. This is such a common fear.

Tearing (I mean, who wants their vagina to tear? No one. Read this article now) LINK TO

Pooping during birth is another top fear of many women, but it is one that I love to chat about. The truth is this: you don't need to worry!

The Fear of ending up having a cesarean (c-section) is a fear of many mamas. So to this I say EDUCATION and taking a birth class, like ours!!

Not getting my epidural in time

The birth plan going awry or not having the birth I want

Not being listened to/communication

Not being able to handle the pain

Pooping

Losing control

Something happening to baby or me

What's your top birth fear? Is it the one we talked about?

24 Feb 2023Bonding with Baby isn't Always Easy: Ronnie's Birth Story00:37:05

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

Today I am chatting with a new mama who found me at the end of her second pregnancy. Ronnie is married to her high school sweetheart and mama to a son and a daughter.

Ronnie had a traumatic cesarean in 2020, leading her to seek a VBAC birth when she was pregnant again.

Ronnie sent me this lovely email, "You were the only birth-related blogger/podcaster that didn’t make me feel ashamed for being so uneducated about and traumatized by my first birth. I felt so broken after my traumatic c-section. I thought my body was a failure, I was weak, and my babies were just too big. Then…you. You and my (new) very supportive doctor gave me the confidence to jump in head first and pursue a VBAC. Thank you. I feel whole again. I found you, and you gave me the confidence I needed to push through! I had a very redemptive VBAC last November…and I feel like a new woman!"

We chatted about her VBAC birth experience and how she was surprised that her bond with the baby didn't happen off the bat. Mama, this is normal and doesn't mean you are a bad mom.

When you first bring your newborn home, it can be hard to figure out what to do. Here are some tips to help you and your new baby bond more easily.

It's normal to feel like you're not bonding with your newborn.

You're exhausted, and it can feel like your baby is just an extra thing you have to care for in addition to your other responsibilities. The most important thing you can do is give them a safe environment, so they feel secure and loved.

Make sure that you and your partner have time together with the baby. This will help you feel connected to each other and ensure everyone meets their needs.

Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It’s important to remember that this is a big change for everyone—for you, your partner, and your family members—and there are many ways people can get support when they need it.

If something isn’t working for you or someone else, don’t hesitate to reach out!

Here are some tips and tricks to help you overcome the initial hurdles and enjoy this incredible experience.

1. Take time for yourself.

It's crucial that you set aside time for yourself so that you can recharge your batteries and come back to parenting with a fresh perspective.

2. Have realistic expectations about what kind of parent you will be.

Don't expect to be perfect at first—or ever! You won't have all the answers, and it's okay not to know exactly what you're doing. If your baby is safe and healthy, everything else will eventually fall into place!

3. Accept help from others when it's offered (and don't feel guilty about taking advantage).

Accept offers of help when your friends and family suggest them--especially when you are so tired that you feel you can't do anything right. People who know you well will not be offended if you ask them to hold your baby while you shower or if they take the baby while you go to the store for diapers. People who love you want to help, and this is an excellent opportunity for all of you to get to know each other better!

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

Today's guest is Bailey Knight. Bailey is one of my students inside Calm Labor Confident Birth Class who joined our class in hope of having a more knowledgeable & empowered second birth.

Baliey's labor begins in the midst of a string of tornadoes that wreak havoc on the east coast.

Here's a tidbit of our conversation:

"My husband goes to take a shower and I'm doing bedtime with my toddler. I'm sitting on his bed and singing a song. We're doing the whole bedtime thing.

Then I just have a moment of going, oh no, and quickly stand up so that my water doesn't break on his bed.

However, I stood up and my water broke all over my toddler's bedroom floor, my mom's brain was like, don't let your water break on your toddler.

Then he was very nice and asked if I peed myself. I said, Yes! And he said, mommy, we're not supposed to do that in the middle of the floor."

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

In this insightful podcast episode we focus on preparing for an unmedicated birth.

Emphasizing on how you can address your fears and the importance of understanding your “WHY” for choosing an unmedicated birth.

6 Ways to Prepare for An Unmedicated Birth:

  1. Mindset Matters: Addressing your fears and your mindset happens long before the labor room. Replace your fears with TRUTH, and having a clear “WHY” for choosing an unmedicated birth is essential for a positive mindset.
  2. Being Educated: Education gives you a sense of calm & peace to make the best decisions for your during your birth. Winging your birth is not an option.
  3. Preparing Your Body: Understanding the power of the pelvis and movement during birth is monumental to your birth experience.
  4. Creating a Supportive Birth Environment: If you create a birth environment that is supportive, you are going to feel safe while allowing the natural pain killers that we have flowing through our body to flow.
  5. Unmedicated Pain Management Tools & Techniques: Understanding the importance of various unmedicated pain management techniques, including breath work, hot/cold therapy, & the comb technique.
  6. Understanding Your Interventions & Your Birth Rights: Like I’ve said before, we don’t just refuse willy nilly. You need to know what this intervention is for, why it is used, and when it is appropriate. Should I say yes? Should I say no? You need to know your rights to navigate this.

14 Jun 2024Purposeful Positioning To Push like a Pro00:39:22

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

Trish educates on how to push like a pro during labor using purposeful positioning and pushing that makes sense, emphasizing the importance of education and listening to your instincts.

This episode encourages you to take control of your birthing experience by understanding labor stages, learning about different pushing positions, and trusting your instincts.

Trish cannot emphasize enough the value of being educated to minimize fear and anxiety, while sharing practical advice for preventing 3rd to 4th degree tearing, and advocating for your own birthing preferences.

“You have to understand the stages of labor, because the movements that you do pre labor, during early labor, during active labor, during transition, and during pushing are so different in some ways.

And it all really depends on the passenger, the baby. So, you have to be educated, you have to take an evidence based birth class so that you can recognize what stage of labor you're in, and you have to take a class that teaches you how to move your body.

Your body is powerful, and your voice is critical in the labor room.” - Trish

Labor and delivery nurses have the most incredible job in the world. We have the honor of standing in the presence of your family's most wonderful moment in history, the birth of a family member.

But there is a side to birth that many do not talk about, which has to be honored because many parents experience it, and that is the loss of their little one.

This episode is dedicated to the many babies who are born sleeping, and as I write this, I am crying because my entire life has been affected by the loss of a newborn.

My sister, Michelle, came into this world sleeping, forever changing my mother's heart. In 2013, amidst the turmoil of experiencing the first of three miscarriages, my niece brought her daughter, Alivia, into the world, asleep forever in the arms of Jesus.

Grief has left an indescribable mark on my family, touching us in ways words fail to capture.

Today's guest is sharing how she is impacting the world of newborn loss and educating those who care for the ones who have been devastated. Listen as we chat about the other side of birth.

02 Jun 2023The Incredible Benefits You Need to Know About Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy & For Newborns: Dr.Kim Tran00:38:08

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

Join Dr. Kim Tran and me as we break down the incredible ways seeing a chiropractor during pregnancy can make all the difference in the world. At least your world!

Dr. Tran is a pregnancy and pediatric Chiropractor from Houston, TX. She also does functional nutrition, focusing on gut health and hormones. She has 4 kids, 3 girls, and a boy.

From Dr. Tran: "Chiropractic care during pregnancy looks at the power, passage, and passenger.

The power is nervous system health and making sure power to the uterus is nice and strong.

That way, the uterus can function at 100% and contract/relax properly when it's time.

The passage is about Mom's pelvis and its surrounding structures. It’s so important that the spine and pelvis are in good alignment during pregnancy.

A misalignment in the pelvis can cause instability and surrounding muscles/ligaments to be pulled in an uncomfortable direction.

This can cause discomfort during pregnancy. Babies are super smart and will go wherever and in whatever position is comfortable for the baby.

Baby is the passenger. We always want to ensure mom is aligned so the baby is in the best position for birth.

Then after birth, it's always good to get the baby checked as well. Baby has been in utero in awkward positions for months. During the check, I’m looking to see if there are any Torticollis, primitive reflexes intact and strong, oral restrictions, cranial shape, range of motion, and misalignments.

Checking babies is super gentle; any adjustments are with no more pressure than you’d check a ripe avocado or tomato. Getting babies checked during the first year of life is great! I like making sure babies are developing well and hitting all developmental milestones. Then if they’re not, what’s going on there and how to address it?"

In this episode, Trish welcomes Gina Mundy who is a childbirth attorney, bestselling author, wife, and mother of three children.

Gina is an attorney that specializes in childbirth cases. For over two decades, she has analyzed the mistakes that are made during labor and delivery.

Drawing on this knowledge, she has authored the book "A Parent's Guide to a Safer Childbirth" to help parents prevent these mistakes and have a healthy baby. Rather than merely getting involved after an unfortunate mistake was made, Gina has taken a proactive approach by getting involved before childbirth.

Trish and Gina dive into the importance of childbirth preparation, advocating for oneself, and understanding the role of Pitocin in deliveries. Gina shares insights from her 21 years of specializing in childbirth cases, emphasizing the necessity of being informed to avoid medical malpractice.

The discussion highlights the critical role of educated support persons, the benefits of having a doula, and practical advice for navigating hospital interventions. This conversation underscores the need for proactive education in childbirth for healthier outcomes.

Both Gina and Trish are on a mission to change the birth culture, one birth at a time. Tune into this episode for passionate insights and realities for what goes on in the labor and delivery room, and why it is so important to be well educated in childbirth.

The early postpartum days and hours can be a little bit of a rollercoaster.

You're still recovering from the childbirth experience and learning to adjust to your new role as a mother.

You may not know where to turn when it comes to breastfeeding questions or how to get help if you're having trouble breastfeeding. So people will tell you that it just comes naturally, but that is not true.

Starting your breastfeeding journey can be a learning curve for both you and your baby.

That's where someone like today's guest comes in. Sterling Grey-Simmons is a postpartum doula and a certified breastfeeding specialist. From working out how much milk your baby needs each day to figuring out if there are any old wives' tales that might be causing problems for you (we know we hear them, too!), she explains how having education and support brings security every step of the way.

MORE FROM Sterling Grey- Simmons

Sterling and I talked so much more about breastfeeding, milk oversupply, and life, but we also dove into real-life postpartum. To follow along with more of Sterling’s life and business, visit @loyallactation on Instagram, or grab her free breastfeeding meal journal here.

11 Oct 2024Changing the Birth Culture through Evidence Based Birth with Dr. Rebecca Dekker00:35:02

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

Trish is excited to welcome Dr. Rebecca Dekker to the podcast! Dr. Dekker is a PhD, RN, and the founder of Evidence Based Birth®.

Dr. Rebecca Dekker had a traumatic birth experience when she trusted doctors to do what was best for her, and was shocked after finding out the care she got was not evidence-based. Doctors advised restricted food and drink, bed rest, and an epidural, only to end up with a vacuum-assisted delivery and separation from her newborn baby.

For her second child, she opted for a midwife-assisted birth, even though it was illegal in her state. She’s now looking to change parents’ mindsets during pregnancy to question if the care they are being provided is the right one for them and what alternatives they should have access to.

As a RN for two decades, she’s experienced firsthand (as a nurse, researcher, and mother) that routine care in hospitals is not tailored and can even be harmful at times.

The conversation centers around empowering women through education and understanding during childbirth.

This episode highlights critical topics such as the importance of finding your voice, individualized birth plans, and the significance of evidence-based care and informed decision making.

Also covered are common concerns around inductions, particularly for gestational diabetes, and how to engage confidently with healthcare providers.

They emphasize the value of a supportive birth community and continuous learning for both parents and birth practitioners.

09 Jun 2022All about Pain Relief Options During Birth: Which Work Best?00:26:50

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

One of the biggest questions you might ask yourself before you have your baby, is this: "How will I handle the pain of labor?".

You have choices. That is the first thing I want you to focus on. After that I want you to be educated on what causes the pain and how you can lean into it, prior to utilizing your pain management plan. Labor pain is not a pain that you should fear, it is a pain that is necessary to bring you the baby.

During birth, there are pretty much 3 common options for pain control: Analgesics, Anesthetics, Nitrous Oxide, and Unmedicated options.

Today we talked about the first three options which all fall into the medicated pain management options.

Analgesics include IV narcotics such as Nubain, Stadol, Morphine, Fentanyl (which works the best in my opinion), and sometimes Demerol. Analgesics do not take the pain away, rather they lessen the pain, and still allow you to move somewhat freely. They cross the placenta and affect the baby, for this reason, they can not be given later in active labor.

Nitrous Oxide is another option for pain relief. It does not eliminate the pain. is administered through a face mask during the contractions. Once you remove the mask, the effects are almost gone immediately. Many women love this option as it allows movement throughout labor. I have found that some women love it and some women hate it.

An epidural is the most favored option for pain management during labor. It is considered an anesthetic and if it works properly will eliminate the pain. I teach my students to not solely rely on it being the savior of the day, as there are many times an epidural might not work out. Always have a backup plan.

I hope this episode helped you understand pain relief options during labor. I would be so grateful if you hit subscribe and write a review!!

10 Mar 2023An Exciting Second Birth: Quincy 's Beautiful VBAC Birth00:31:03

Leave a review and include your Instagram username for a chance to win our monthly raffle!

Join me today as I chat with one of my beloved mamas, Quincy, from our birth class, The VBAC Lab.

I'll never forget when Quincy opened up during one of our weekly hangouts without students and mama members in the membership. She was transparent and shared her struggle to bond with her first baby. It was such a vulnerable and beautiful conversation, and I am so grateful that Quincy opted to come onto The Birth Experience and share her story.

We recently talked to another mama, Ronnie, about her experience bonding and realized that so many mamas struggle with guilt when the bond isn't magical.

This is why I am adding some of the tips I have gathered throughout my career and from the mamas I hang with every week inside our private membership.

Tips for Bonding Foundation Before Baby is Born:

  • Talk to Baby
  • Call The Baby By Name
  • Keep a Pregnancy Journal

Here are some tips for bonding with a baby:

  1. Physical touch: Holding, hugging, cuddling, and kissing the baby helps to create a strong bond. Skin-to-skin contact is crucial for newborns, as it can help regulate their body temperature, breathing, and heart rate.
  2. Eye contact: Eye contact with the baby during feedings, diaper changes, and playtime help build a connection and allows the baby to feel seen and heard.
  3. Talking and singing: Talking and singing to the baby helps to establish a connection and encourages language development.
  4. Responding to needs: Being responsive to the baby's needs, such as feeding, changing, and soothing, helps the baby to feel secure and loved.
  5. Spending time together: Spending time with the baby, such as going for walks, playing games, and reading books, helps to build a bond and create positive experiences.
  6. Schedule Self-care for YOU!!!

Remember, bonding takes time and may not happen immediately. It is important to be patient and consistent in your efforts to bond with the baby.

Today I sat down with Jessica, who is an experienced RN who specializes in Mother-Baby, Postpartum, and NICU.

Basically, my opposite!

We chatted about the postpartum routine she recommends for her patients and their support partners when they enter their postpartum hospital room.

Here are the main tips:

  • Baby eats every 2-4 hours.
  • When the baby stirs, the partner/support person cares for the baby, and Mama goes and takes care of her peri-care needs.
  • Baby gets fed
  • Everyone rests
  • You do you during postpartum (you must listen, it's too much to write out!!) But basically, you decide what you are comfortable with during postpartum recovery and do it.

We focused on peri-natal considerations for women who have experienced sexual trauma. This is a topic that I am passionate about, but it also hits home hard. Many of my students and members know that I have dealt personally with sexual trauma, and it has affected my work as a labor nurse.

For many women, preparing for pregnancy is a mental, emotional, and physical journey that is traveled alone.

We see you. This chat between Emily and I, is packed with information that will help guide survivors of trauma through their pregnancy and postpartum period with an eye toward caring for their emotional well-being.

Trish shares her expert tips & insights on managing pain tolerance and raising the pain threshold during labor.

She emphasizes that your current pain tolerance level does not significantly impact your ability to handle labor pain.

Trish breaks down the importance of education, mindset, and preparation in raising your pain threshold during labor.

“ If you go into your labor understanding how intense it's gonna get, and preparing your body, having tools at your disposal, and having your mind ready to manage that pain intentionally,  you're gonna be so freaking blown away by how much pain you'll actually be able to tolerate.” - Trish

She also touches on her comprehensive birth programs, which focuses on her three part framework: knowledge, mindset, and advocacy to empower you to navigate childbirth with confidence.

This episode will leave you understanding the difference between pain tolerance and pain threshold, and the potential for a better birth experience through preparation and the right mindset.

Today's guest, Taylor Mckay, is our team doula over here at Labor Nurse Mama, and we adore her. Of course, we talk about her birth experience and why her birth led to her dream of becoming a doula.

According to AmericanPregnancy.org, a doula is "The doula is a professional trained in childbirth who provides emotional, physical, and educational support to a mother who is expecting, is experiencing labor, or has recently given birth. They aim to help women have a safe, memorable, and empowering birthing experience."

Inside our birth classes, we felt it very important to provide our students with multiple support layers, including a doula. So last year, we brought Taylor or board; it was the BEST decision ever!!

Listen in as we break down the significance of the presence of a doula during your birth.
