In 1 Samuel 22 we are told that while David was on the run from King Saul, he became the leader of a band of outlaws, misfits, and runaway slaves. This period is the focus of the first season of our Bible-Verse - an imaginary TV show that we are plotting out in order to deepen our understanding of Scripture. If you're a fan of The Chosen, consider joining us to see what goes into the work of adapting biblical stories to the screen. In today's episode, we will begin developing the plot for episodes 3-5 of Season 1. Episode 3 focuses on David's aborted attempt to join the Philistines (1 Samuel 21:10-15), in which he's forced to act mad in order to escape. It also covers his fateful decision to go fight the Philistines at Keilah (1 Samuel 23:1-4). Episode 4 picks up with David and the Outlaws saving the people of Keilah - only to be betrayed and almost handed over to Saul (1 Samuel 23:5-13). In Episode 5, Saul's effort to pursue the Outlaws backfires, when David catches him defecating in a cave and has to decide whether to kill him or let him go (1 Samuel 24). 11 Oct 2024Why did Jesus not save her? (Revisiting The Chosen Season 4 Controversy)00:16:57

SPOILER WARNING! Episode 3 of The Chosen Season 4 includes what may be the most controversial scene of the show so far (and that's saying a lot). After a public dispute with the Pharisees draws the attention of Quintus and the Romans, Jesus and his disciples flee - but not before Ramah, one of the female disciples, is stabbed by Quintus. But what makes this moment especially controversial is Jesus' decision to not heal her - despite Thomas' desperate pleas. Such a moment is not recorded in Scripture and has generated a lot of backlash against the show. Has The Chosen taken its creative liberties too far? Would Jesus have withheld healing during his earthly ministry? Is this moment an instance of fridging? This episode (generated with the help of AI) summarizes a blogpost I wrote earlier this summer that tackles many of these questions.

21 Jun 2024A New Bible Show Begins: Exploring the Story of David and the Outlaws01:10:52

Have you ever said to yourself, "I wish the creators of The Chosen would make a show based on THAT Old Testament Story?" Me too. That's why I'm gathering a few of my friends together for a new podcast series, in which we'll be discussing what it would look like to create a series like The Chosen based on the story of David and his wilderness outlaws. Now, to be clear, we aren't actually filming anything. That would take a ton of money, which we don't have. But we will be outlining the plot and themes of the show, developing characters, and perhaps even selecting a fantasy-cast. In this conversation we orient ourselves to the biblical source material. In particular, we look at where this story fits in the grander narrative of Scripture and into the Book of Samuel in particular. We also look at some key conflicts. About The Bible Artist We believe the Arts provide us fresh eyes to see the significance of the Bible and the beauty of the Gospel. We also believe the Bible provides the Arts with complex characters and stories with profound insight into the human condition. Join us as we discuss popular biblical adaptations like The Chosen and develop our own Bible-Verse.

03 Oct 2024Israel, the Temple, and End Times: The Chosen Season 5 Controversy?00:14:07

In a recent post on The Bible Artist Blog, I explored the challenges of adapting Jesus' prophecy about the destruction of the Temple and the coming of the Son of Man in The Chosen Season 5. This experimental podcast episode adapts that material with the help of two AI guest hosts, who summarize my analysis of the matters involved, including: Dallas Jenkins' connection to Left Behind, the different approaches to interpreting Matthew 24, and different ways The Chosen could adapt the material.

09 Feb 2023Quintus & Gaius in The Chosen (Adapting Biblical Characters Audio Blog)00:18:19

The Chosen has become one of the most popular and successful adaptations of the Bible and depictions of Jesus in recent memory. On The Bible Artist Blog I have an ongoing series exploring how The Chosen adapts biblical characters, and in today’s podcast I revisit an old post I wrote about Gaius and Quintus, two of the main Roman characters that we’ve encountered in the series so far. Although "Quintus" and "Gaius" are not names found within the Gospel accounts, if we analyze the depiction of these characters in light of the Gospel stories that involve Roman soldiers, it becomes clear that The Chosen is still building them out of biblical material. After analyzing the portrayal of each character, I point to some of the biblical stories that The Chosen will most likely include them in, before finally making some predictions about where Quintus and Gaius will end up by the end of the series.

04 Jun 2023Christopher Powers on Full of Eyes and Visual Exegesis00:55:02

Christopher Powers is a pastor, artist, and the creator of Full of Eyes, a ministry that seeks to visually proclaim the glory of God taught in Scripture. Our conversation covers a variety of topics: What is visual exegesis? What does it mean to be full of eyes? And why are the symbolic dimensions of Scripture so important? Christopher also walks us through a few pieces of exegetical art and explains how the rich symbolism points us to Christ. It's a spiritual feast, full of insights that I'm still mulling over and cherishing in my heart.

27 Mar 2023Little James in The Chosen and Scripture (Adapting Biblical Characters Audio Blog)00:15:01

On the blog I have an ongoing series exploring how The Chosen adapts biblical characters, and in today’s podcast I’ll be revisiting a post I wrote just a few months ago about how The Chosen depicts Little James or as he’s more traditionally known, James the Lesser.

Up until his big moment in Episode 2 of Season 3, Little James has played an appropriately small role in The Chosen. With only a handful of lines in The Chosen Season 1, most viewers barely even took notice of him. Season 2 finally started giving James a little more depth through his interactions with the other disciples, but in Season 3, Little James finally got his moment to shine.
