25 Mar 2022No Literal Meaning in the BIBLE!? | Peterson, Pageau, and Dr. Strange | Bp. Ep. 3201:51:35

What do we mean when we ask for Scripture's "literal" meaning? Is there a "neutral reading" one can have of the Bible? What is the battle between the scientific atheist and fundamentalist?

31 Aug 2020Being Jewish and Believing In Jesus (A conversation with Peter Greenspan.) (BP episode 13)01:12:09

I sat down with a great friend of mine, Peter Greenspan. We talked about him growing up in Brooklyn, being ethnically Jewish, becoming a doctor, becoming an orthodox Jew, wrestling with Jesus, and then accepts Him as Messiah.

14 Feb 2023”We Clamor for those Qualities we are Rendering Impossible” | DC Ch. 1 | pt. 3| |BP Ep. 5601:16:11

As we journey further into the implications of values disconnected from actions, flying upside down, Daniel and I find help in C.S. Lewis's "The Abolition of Man" and get some more help from Newbigin.

As Daniel and I continue to talk about the Ideas in chapter 1, we drill down on what happens in the third culture when they want the kingdom of the second culture without the first.

The Belfast Podcast exists to help recapture the Christain imagination. Luke and Daniel see the trend of modernism doing no favors for a vibrant view of scripture. It is our goal to widen the field of vision for modern people reading the Bible as we grapple with its ancient context, literary beauty, and symbolic underpinnings. You may have been taught to read texts with an eye for their literary and symbolic structures in English courses in high school and/or college, but rarely is this taught to seminary students or lay Christians alike when it comes to the Bible. We want to keep this eye for symbolism, repetition, and structure as we investigate the Biblical canon, linking it to modern and old examples that are extemporaneous yet connected to aid in giving the broader field of vision mentioned earlier. Come along with us on our journey to read your bible again for the first time. We hope that through the words of those that have come before us, we can give Western Christianity its imagination back.

21 Jun 2024Why Christians get Kat Von D Wrong | Divine Conspiracy | Ch 9 | Pt 2 | BP Ep. 8100:38:15

About 6 months ago, Kat Von D went onto Allie Beth Stuckey's podcast. They talked about her conversion, and Kat shared stories of the backlash she has experienced due to her appearance. She also sheds light on why she doesn't like modern worship music. These clips help us dive into Willard's words from "The Divine Conspiracy" regarding our out-of-order values in personal transformation.

23 Mar 2020Where do we place our faith? (BP episode 6)00:41:15

This is a talk I (Luke) gave at Icthus, the student ministry I was involved in when I went to MSU when I was down there a few weeks ago. I spoke about our restoration and where it is found. This is content I have been wrestling with for a long time, and I hope this message is able to provide freedom to those who listen as it has for me.

24 Aug 2020How did we grow up praying? (A conversation with Matt Dean.) (BP episode 12)01:06:07

What was your example of prayer growing up? How did this affect how you pray now? Is there a "proper" way to pray? What did Jesus say about prayer? What are some things you can do to get started praying again?

Matt Dean and I address all of these questions in this episode on prayer! We begin with a discussion of how we grew up praying (0:00-21:45). From there we move on to how prayer for us has changed over the years (22:00-40:35) and how having a "partner" in prayer can be a very beneficial thing. To end the episode we discussed the importance of the layout given to us on the Lord's prayer and Dallas Willard's invaluable words about it (40:35-1:03:30).

09 Sep 2022Some Problems with Prophecy | Typology pt. 1 | BP Ep. 4500:33:41

#dune #prophecy

In this episode, Daniel and I start a short series on typology. To start, we discuss some of the problems we had with our template for prophecy growing up. This episode is meant to lay the table for a better way to view how the Old Testament is used in the New.

16 Apr 2022How does it feel to be Lonely? | Henri Nouwen, Loneliness, and Relational Expectations | Bp. Ep. 3401:28:41

In his book "Reaching Out: Three Spiritual Movements" Henri Nouwen starts talking about the move from loneliness to solitude. I read to Daniel in this episode from the first chapter, "A Suffocating Loneliness," and we discussed how we have felt these things in our lives.

02 Apr 2020How did we react to Christian college and boarding school? (A conversation with Luke Vaughn) (BP episode 7)00:54:55

In this transplant episode of the Belfast Podcast, I take an episode from a podcast I was trying to make while living in Springfield called, "How to Survive College." My old friend Luke Vaughn and I discuss growing up, him going to a Christian college and me going to a Christian boarding school, how these things affected us, and how we got to know each other through Icthus in Springfield.

05 May 2022More PROBLEMS with Inspiration and Inerrancy | The Belfast Podcast | Ep. 3502:22:15

Daniel and I have another, more pointed, conversation around inspiration and inerrancy. We discuss, again, the major views taken on inspiration, what can be problematic with some of them, and how these views get expressed when talking about inerrancy.

While having this discussion, we use a video from Michael Heiser, investigating what it means to say the Bible is a "channel book." https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yu5ey2nztRQ

Later, we react to a podcast episode from N.T. Wright in which he brings up some of the same issues. https://open.spotify.com/episode/4bJr8LpjVN3U5mTyUJgwrP?si=7a9a20b49339464a Belfast email: belfastpodcast@gmail.com

30 Jun 2022How Translation Affects our reading of the Canon| Tim Mackie Canonization talk| Belfast Ep. 3801:32:44

#timmackie #biblicalcanon #michaelheiser

In the last episode, Daniel and I reacted to the first half of a talk by Tim Mackie on the canonization of the Bible, focusing on the canonization of the Old Testament. In this half of the conversation, Daniel and I look at the textual strains of the Bible, how they are different, and why translators pick the words they do when putting the Hebrew canon into English. I also introduce a textual difference between the Masoretic and Septuagent texts that have large theological implications.

In our lead-off episode in the gospel series project, Daniel and I attempt to tackle the question, "What is the Gospel?" Today, we start with defining the word in Greek, seeing how it was used in that culture and how the Biblical writers used it for their own purposes. We begin reacting to a sermon by Skye Jethani.

04 Nov 2021Reading the Bible as Fiction | How ”IT” can Help us Understand Biblical Narrative | BP Ep. 2700:54:07

*Explicit Content Warning* (For the Bible too)

In this episode, I attempt to frame how reading the Biblical Narrative like we read fiction can be helpful in understanding how smart stories work. I start with Stephen King's "IT", using the story of Beverly Marsh, how her childhood affects her as an adult, and how those allusions can aid in understanding the stories of Judah in Genesis 37 and 38.

11 Sep 2024Why its Impossible for You (I) to Pray | Divine Conspiracy Ch 9 | Pt 4| BP Ep 8300:39:32

What is it about prayer that many find so difficult? What about spiritual disciples make them feel as though they are always at arm's length? How does our view of salvation affect how we engage with spiritual practices? Join Daniel and me as we go through the end of chapter 9 of The Divine Conspiracy, along with Shia Labeouf, to help answer some of these questions.

Daniel and I discuss the Augustinian framework of interpreting the Bible as art. Within this, though, is the assumption that the Bible is artistic, which it is! So we talk about how intertextuality affects the interpretation of the text along with a modern-day example in the new Spider-man film. 18 Mar 2020How do we integrate eastern thought into our Christianity? (BP episode 5) (ft. an early COVID-19 conversation and C.S. Lewis)01:02:33
In this episode of the Belfast Podcast, Luke sits down with his good buddy Matt Dean to discuss the importance of the eastern mindset in Christianity, its history, and why we must not lose it, especially for those of us in the west. They compare and contrast it with western thought, contrasting facts with truths and each culture's concern with both.   Before all of that, the gentlemen have an early discussion on the COVID-19 virus, and of course, Luke must bring in C.S. Lewis.   Hopefully, this conversation stirs your curiosity for eastern thought, especially if it is something you have not overthought about. If this conversation does that for you, The BEMA Podcast with Mary Solomon would be an excellent place to start. The BEMA Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...

Help Luke go to England this Summer: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-me-travel-to-study-cs-lewis

As we discuss becoming people who can fulfill the law, we must know what purity Christ calls us towards. Is it to be ritually pure or morally pure? Is there a difference? Does Jesus put one before the other? We will have part two next week!

09 Mar 2022Putting the Bible in its Place | ”Dune,” Mackie, and Heiser help us understand Divine Accommodation | BP Ep. 3102:09:19

Continuing our discussion about the purpose of literature, using it as a lens, Daniel and I consider how time and place are necessary when understanding and interpreting a text, especially the Bible. Knowing time and place are essential; we see how the Bible communicates to us from a particular context and should be seen, especially for us today, as "cross-cultural" communication.

15 Aug 2020How did we grow up with the Bible? (BP episode 11)01:06:51

How did you grow up hearing about the Bible, if you heard about it at all? What was your frame of reference for the Scriptures? Do you think it is appropriate to wrestle with the text, or is it, "the Bible says it, that settles it" mentality? And finally, what do we mean when we say the Bible is inspired? all of this is discussed in this episode of the Belfast Podcast. But first, a brief talk about current social and political events in the first half of 2020, because it's been that long between episodes!

0:00-31:00 Dimitry and I start off with a short discussion of current social events in the U.S. since our last recording.

I wanted to review this book because I have enjoyed much of Dr. Heiser's other work and was pleasantly surprised by his first fore into fiction. It is not perfect, but it was a delightful read!

I start the discussion with a link to a previous Gresham novel I read and some comments from Stephen King's book "On Writing" that helped me frame what Heiser is up to. I found it fun to talk about, but again, if you want to skip straight to the review, go to this timestamp: 10:33

The Gospel in 7 Words: https://whitehorseinn.org/resource-library/articles/the-gospel-in-seven-words/

In this episode, Alex and I attempt to break down a question he had at 15, "Why are the gospels of Paul and Jesus different? Are they different?" In thinking about this, we will look at the two extremes that the gospel can take in the U.S. The "right" fundamentalist perspective focuses on personal, spiritual salvation, and the "left" social gospel that seems to focus purely on social advancement as the marker of salvation. The trouble is that there is truth in both of these views, but for many, they are seen as mutually exclusive.

This week Alex and I try to take time to tackle the fundamentalist perspective. We mainly discuss the fundamentalist views on scripture and how that affects the view of church and salvation. There will be two parts to this conversation. Here is part one, and part two will be coming next week!

In this episode, Daniel and I read through the opening section of the Sermon on the Mount, guided by Willard's "The Divine Conspiracy," in exploring the importance of the sermon's structure. We debate whether the sermon was given all at once or if Mark has compiled it for us in his gospel.

21 Aug 20221 Corinthians 11:2-16 | Paul, ”Hair,” and Head coverings | BP Ep. 4401:18:00

Buckle up because this one is weird!

Daniel and I continue the theme of what it means for the Bible to communicate in a particular time and place. Moving away from the Old Testament, we go to the New, seeing what awaits us there. In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul has a section many have scratched their head over for years. He is concerned with order in worship, authority, and marriage structure and oddly fixated on the length of people's hair. The answer to the last question will give us the keys to understanding his argument "from nature" for the rest of it.

15 Sep 2020"At least she wasn't the living embodiment of my damned ideology"|Reading from Rule 9|BP Episode 1400:43:06

In Dr. Jordan Peterson's book, "12 Rules for Life," there is a rule that has stuck with me while reading. Rule 9: "Assume the Person you are Talking to Might Know Something you don't." It is a powerful rule, and one I think we all can learn from, especially in these trying times in the U.S. and around the world.

He begins the chapter with a meditation on what it means to give someone advice, and how advice is usually not helpful, longterm at least. The section on advice ends with a resounding statement on what it looks like to leave someone the "embodiment of your damned ideology," giving them a one-sided story to wisk away their problems, or says they are no problems at all, without going through the challenging process of facilitating discovery on what they actually are and how they can be fixed, not ideologically, but individually.

I'd encourage anyone who finds this attractive to read the chapter and the rest of his book for that matter. Dr. Peterson is a modern-day prophet. One who seems to see underneath current circumstances.

I haven't stopped thinking about that ending phrase ever since I read it weeks ago. I don't want to leave anyone the living embodiment of my damned ideology, no matter the ideology. I want to give honest thoughts as I try to follow Jesus, partner with Him in building the Kingdom, and help people think about things differently, not ideologically.

Help Luke go to England this Summer: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-me-travel-to-study-cs-lewis

I have the opportunity to join my school for a trip to Oxford for 9 days to study C.S. Lewis in his place and time! Anyone who has been following this podcast for any time knows that Lewis has had a substantial impact on my theological thinking and gives his influence to the name of this podcast. After my parent's outstanding contribution to cover the first deposit, the trip is $2,650. Any amount will help, and those who give over $5 will get access to unique content I will produce after the trip!

02 Aug 2022How are we to View Creation? Walton and Genesis Pt.1 | BP Ep. 4200:51:01

As Daniel and I continue to look at how place and time affect communication, we look back to the first few pages of the Bible, examining how the ancient near east context informs what is being communicated in the creation story. With the help of John H. Walton, we hope to provide a richer interpretation.

In reading chapter 6 of Willard's book, I was struck by the simple belief that in fasting and giving up food, the Christian believes with Christ that we have food others do not know about. Or do you believe that? It's the confession of Jesus in John's Gospel, so we may do good to consider it. Or, like me, are you addicted to the pleasure of food? Follow us on

We had to break up the conversation, but in this episode, Daniel and I react to Tim Mackies Lecture, "The Making of the Bible." Focusing on the Old Testament canon here, we uncover some important facts that meld well with how we have been talking about inspiration.

10 Jul 2019Are we deconstructing? (BP episode 1)01:03:08

In this introductory episode, Dimitry and Luke explore the question, "Are people happier in deconstruction?" Inspired by an episode of "The Bad Christian Podcast" with Chad Gardner of Kings K (episode 444), where Chad pushed back on the idea of throwing the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to church and tradition. Chad Argues that happiness can be found in a simpler faith where there is a union of tradition and vision.

29 Jul 2019Are We Programmed? (BP episode 2)01:05:54

In the second episode, Luke and Dimitry discuss the idea of church becoming a program in replacement of trusting Holy Spirit to work. The conversation hits on topics of money, power, and an unwillingness to change. Dimitry talks about how calling something a blessing doesn't mean you're not appealing to the idea of karma. Luke gets fired up about church programs producing robots and not disciples.

28 Aug 2019Are We Reformed? (BP episode 3) 00:50:18

In this episode, Dimitry and Luke leap back in history to the days of Martin Luther and the Catholic Church. They discuss the conditions that lead to Luther's 95 theses and the ripple effects, good and bad, that have been made in Christendom since the infamous papers were hammed into the church doors.

This goes off into a discussion about the relationship between the individual and the community and how we can be brought into the larger vision of unity in the body as we work for the Kingdom.

14 Sep 2021Becoming a Heretic | Talking about the Problems with Original Sin and Hell | BP Ep. 2402:11:05

Daniel and I discuss some things I have been thinking about recently, Original sin and Hell. I have run across scholarships against the usual Augustinian conceptions of original sin common in evangelicalism and reformed circles. The typical Augustinian view also has major Christological issues, which I address. Second, Daniel and I discuss conscious eternal Torment (the majority conception of hell) versus annihilationism or conditional immortality. This section is mainly me thinking aloud as I press the major narrative issues CET has with the Bible, along with a little help from Lewis.

04 Nov 2022Introduction to the Gospel Project00:19:05

Daniel and I have been working on a project we want to invite you to be a part of! Often people say things like, "We are a gospel-centered church" or "I just preach the gospel." But what do they mean by the word "gospel"? And does their use of it reflect what the writers of the stories of Jesus meant when they talked of the 'gospel of Jesus Christ? These are just some of the questions we will attempt to answer in this series. I will link the books we are studying below. Feel free to buy them, and read along with us! Please email us with questions and comments with your thoughts as we will attempt to do a Q&A at the end of the study of each book.

We ended the episode with a discussion on inspiration because how you look at inspiration affects how you think about inerrancy. Timestamps below.

The Belfast Podcast exists to help recapture the Christian imagination. Come along with us on our journey to reread your bible for the first time. We hope that through the words of those who have come before us, we can give Western Christianity its imagination back.
