I sat down with a great friend of mine, Peter Greenspan. We talked about him growing up in Brooklyn, being ethnically Jewish, becoming a doctor, becoming an orthodox Jew, wrestling with Jesus, and then accepts Him as Messiah. 

As we journey further into the implications of values disconnected from actions, flying upside down, Daniel and I find help in C.S. Lewis's "The Abolition of Man" and get some more help from Newbigin.

This is a talk I (Luke) gave at Icthus, the student ministry I was involved in when I went to MSU when I was down there a few weeks ago. I spoke about our restoration and where it is found. This is content I have been wrestling with for a long time, and I hope this message is able to provide freedom to those who listen as it has for me. 

What does it mean to become the kind of person who can do what Jesus says? Is it merely being pure in the ritual sense or the moral sense? Is there a way that the two interact in a meaningful way?

What was your example of prayer growing up? How did this affect how you pray now? Is there a "proper" way to pray? What did Jesus say about prayer? What are some things you can do to get started praying again? 

 

Matt Dean and I address all of these questions in this episode on prayer! We begin with a discussion of how we grew up praying (0:00-21:45). From there we move on to how prayer for us has changed over the years (22:00-40:35) and how having a "partner" in prayer can be a very beneficial thing. To end the episode we discussed the importance of the layout given to us on the Lord's prayer and Dallas Willard's invaluable words about it (40:35-1:03:30).

In this episode, Daniel and I start a short series on typology. To start, we discuss some of the problems we had with our template for prophecy growing up. This episode is meant to lay the table for a better way to view how the Old Testament is used in the New.

In his book "Reaching Out: Three Spiritual Movements" Henri Nouwen starts talking about the move from loneliness to solitude. I read to Daniel in this episode from the first chapter, "A Suffocating Loneliness," and we discussed how we have felt these things in our lives.

In this transplant episode of the Belfast Podcast, I take an episode from a podcast I was trying to make while living in Springfield called, "How to Survive College." My old friend Luke Vaughn and I discuss growing up, him going to a Christian college and me going to a Christian boarding school, how these things affected us, and how we got to know each other through Icthus in Springfield. 

Daniel and I have another, more pointed, conversation around inspiration and inerrancy. We discuss, again, the major views taken on inspiration, what can be problematic with some of them, and how these views get expressed when talking about inerrancy.

In order to avoid the gospels of sin management in our culture, we must have a view of the good news and the kingdom of God that transcends just going to heaven or simply being committed to social justice. We must have Jesus be our teacher. In doing so, we will be able to enter life in the kingdom of God, preparing us for eternity.

Continuing our discussion about the purpose of literature, using it as a lens, Daniel and I consider how time and place are necessary when understanding and interpreting a text, especially the Bible. Knowing time and place are essential; we see how the Bible communicates to us from a particular context and should be seen, especially for us today, as "cross-cultural" communication.

In the second transplant episode, my good friend Luke Ford and I discuss several topics as they relate to his story. We discuss his parent's divorce, our mutual struggles with porn, how Ford lost faith and found it later, and then grew in the community of Icthus.

I wanted to review this book because I have enjoyed much of Dr. Heiser's other work and was pleasantly surprised by his first fore into fiction. It is not perfect, but it was a delightful read!

In this episode, Alex and I attempt to break down a question he had at 15, "Why are the gospels of Paul and Jesus different? Are they different?" In thinking about this, we will look at the two extremes that the gospel can take in the U.S. The "right" fundamentalist perspective focuses on personal, spiritual salvation, and the "left" social gospel that seems to focus purely on social advancement as the marker of salvation. The trouble is that there is truth in both of these views, but for many, they are seen as mutually exclusive.

This week Alex and I try to take time to tackle the fundamentalist perspective. We mainly discuss the fundamentalist views on scripture and how that affects the view of church and salvation. There will be two parts to this conversation. Here is part one, and part two will be coming next week!

Buckle up because this one is weird!

Daniel and I continue the theme of what it means for the Bible to communicate in a particular time and place. Moving away from the Old Testament, we go to the New, seeing what awaits us there. In 1 Corinthians 11, Paul has a section many have scratched their head over for years. He is concerned with order in worship, authority, and marriage structure and oddly fixated on the length of people's hair. The answer to the last question will give us the keys to understanding his argument "from nature" for the rest of it.

In Dr. Jordan Peterson's book, "12 Rules for Life," there is a rule that has stuck with me while reading. Rule 9: "Assume the Person you are Talking to Might Know Something you don't." It is a powerful rule, and one I think we all can learn from, especially in these trying times in the U.S. and around the world.

He begins the chapter with a meditation on what it means to give someone advice, and how advice is usually not helpful, longterm at least. The section on advice ends with a resounding statement on what it looks like to leave someone the "embodiment of your damned ideology," giving them a one-sided story to wisk away their problems, or says they are no problems at all, without going through the challenging process of facilitating discovery on what they actually are and how they can be fixed, not ideologically, but individually.

I'd encourage anyone who finds this attractive to read the chapter and the rest of his book for that matter. Dr. Peterson is a modern-day prophet. One who seems to see underneath current circumstances.

I haven't stopped thinking about that ending phrase ever since I read it weeks ago. I don't want to leave anyone the living embodiment of my damned ideology, no matter the ideology. I want to give honest thoughts as I try to follow Jesus, partner with Him in building the Kingdom, and help people think about things differently, not ideologically.

In this introductory episode, Dimitry and Luke explore the question, "Are people happier in deconstruction?" Inspired by an episode of "The Bad Christian Podcast" with Chad Gardner of Kings K (episode 444), where Chad pushed back on the idea of throwing the baby out with the bathwater when it comes to church and tradition. Chad Argues that happiness can be found in a simpler faith where there is a union of tradition and vision.

In the second episode, Luke and Dimitry discuss the idea of church becoming a program in replacement of trusting Holy Spirit to work. The conversation hits on topics of money, power, and an unwillingness to change. Dimitry talks about how calling something a blessing doesn't mean you're not appealing to the idea of karma. Luke gets fired up about church programs producing robots and not disciples.   

In this episode, Dimitry and Luke leap back in history to the days of Martin Luther and the Catholic Church. They discuss the conditions that lead to Luther's 95 theses and the ripple effects, good and bad, that have been made in Christendom since the infamous papers were hammed into the church doors.  

Alex and I continue our discussion about the fundamentalist perspective of the gospel. We hit on how they frame salvation and the mission of the church. This goes off into a discussion about the relationship between the individual and the community and how we can be brought into the larger vision of unity in the body as we work for the Kingdom.

Daniel and I discuss some things I have been thinking about recently, Original sin and Hell. I have run across scholarships against the usual Augustinian conceptions of original sin common in evangelicalism and reformed circles. The typical Augustinian view also has major Christological issues, which I address. Second, Daniel and I discuss conscious eternal Torment (the majority conception of hell) versus annihilationism or conditional immortality. This section is mainly me thinking aloud as I press the major narrative issues CET has with the Bible, along with a little help from Lewis.
