Friday, May 26, 2023 7:00 – 8:00 PM Convention Center Mile High Ballroom 3A Chair: Yukie Kurumiya (The Chicago School of Professional Psychology) Presenting Authors: This is an open meeting for anyone interested in the advancement and evolution of behavior analysis through the lenses of evolutionary science and cultural selection. We invite interested behavior analysts across related disciplines to share their aspirations on the evolution of our field.

2. Symposium #129 Diversity submission From the Tyranny of the Few to Survival of All: Culturo-Behavior Science for All

Sunday, May 28, 2023 8:00 – 9:50 AM Convention Center Mile High Ballroom 2B Area: CSS/PCH; Domain: Translational Chair: Nanni Presti (Kore University) Discussant: Anthony Biglan (Oregon Research Institute) CE Instructor: Anthony Biglan, Ph.D. Abstract: Periodically, social upheavals challenge well established cultural rules and practices. A sampling of current tensions includes what is observed between those who accept social stratification as inevitable and those who labor for social justice, between conservative, progressive, and libertarian agendas, between those who would grant remarkable power to businesses and those who would limit those powers in favor of public health and climate justice. Culturo-behavior scientists have advanced a number of strategies grounded in evolutionary, prevention, and behavior sciences, Skinner’s philosophy of science, and contemporary approaches to language and cognition. Advances in conceptual and empirical evidence for the planned use of interlocked behavior contingencies suggest that it is not too late to create a sustainable economy in which all humans matter, all voices are heard, and all can access basic goods and services. Sunday, May 28, 2023 4:00 – 4:50 PM Hyatt Regency, Mineral Hall D-G Area: CSS/PCH; Domain: Translational CE Instructor: Henry S. Pennypacker, Ph.D. Chair: Francisco Ignacio Perez (University of Texas Health Science Center - Houston School of Public Health) Henry Pennypacker (University of Florida) Naoko Sugiyama (Seisa University) Neil Timothy Martin (Behavior Analyst Certification Board) Abstract: The panel discussion will encourage audience participation. Together, we will focus on how we can promote and cultivate prosocial behavior on a global scale as well as in our own communities. As John Lennon told us, “imagine all the people living life in peace.” Skinner (1973) educated us that the science of behavior plays a leading role in creating an environment where cultural evolutionary changes for the better can be selected. He urged us to act and apply our knowledge about human behavior to prevent a catastrophic future and secure a healthy world for those who follow us. To accomplish these objectives, the panel will address the need to conceptualize our mission and discuss the necessity for formal training in the cultural and evolutionary sciences so that behavior analysts can become proficient leaders that can educate their communities and promote the environment that will facilitate behavior change, such as increasing the frequency of prosocial behavior, that will be needed to live together in harmony, peace, and prosperity. This can be our gift to those who follow us!

Episode 153 features a conversation with the intervening President Denisha Gingles, and Vice-President Cammie Williams of the Black Applied Behavior Analysts, Inc. which paused operations in July 2023 following two unfortunate situations that occurred at our 2023 conference in Detroit: a physical and verbal attack, as well as homophobic statements made from one of their members to another.  Among other things, these incidents exposed how far BABA had drifted from its founding purpose: the uplift of the entire Black community in the behavior analytic space.  In this episode, Denisha and Cammie outline the history of BABA from its beginnings and their path toward transformative healing. As well they share exciting news about their upcoming mini-conference, BLACK CON!

Stay tuned to the Behaviour Speak Podcast over the next few months as we share mini-episodes highlighting some of the positive experiences of attendees at the 2023 conference.

12 Jul 2024Episode 168: Tending the Garden: An Intimate Conversation with Dr. Trina Spencer02:22:31

In Episode 168, Ben chats with Dr. Trina Spencer, the first female Director of the Juniper Garden's Children Centre, a part of the KU Life Span Institute, originally founded in the mid-1960s when citizens of Northeast Kansas City, Kansas joined with faculty from the University of Kansas to address concerns about the development and education of children in their low-income, inner-city community. Since its inception, Juniper Gardens has developed and validated meaningful solutions to major community concerns identified by those directly affected - the community residents themselves. The center also provides opportunities for KU faculty and students to learn from the wisdom and life experiences of families from diverse backgrounds.

In this conversation,  Dr. Spencer bares her soul as she shares her journey of living a sheltered life in a conservative religious family, eventually raising a wonderful transgendered child, finding herself in Africa, and the many life lessons she had along the way.

28 Nov 2023Episode 120: Culturally Responsive Screening Tools for Autism and/or Intellectual Disabilities in Nigeria with Dr. Eziafakaku Nwokolo01:00:09

Episode 120 is a conversation with Dr. Eziafakaku Nwokolo, a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) and a Qualified Behavior Analyst (QBA). Notably, she is the only BCBA in the entire resident Nigerian population and one of the growing numbers of QBAs in the country.

She is the Founder and CEO of Shades of Life Care Limited (SOL), a centre that provides assessment, diagnosis, and intervention strategies to families with children that have behavioural challenges, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The facility also offers training and supervision services to Behaviour Analysts and Technicians in Nigeria.

She holds a Ph.D. in Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities from the University of Kent, where her thesis focused on “Screening for Autism and Intellectual Disabilities Amongst the Nigerian Adolescent Population”. Her thesis represents a significant milestone in Nigeria, as this study is the first of its kind in the country and will help support diagnosis and intervention for Autism and other Intellectual Disabilities because it highlights the need to create a more comprehensive screening methodology for Nigerians and Africans that is culturally appropriate.

26 Jan 2024Episode 136 From Bias to Balance: Antiracism in Behavior Analysis with Sonia Levy, Ph.D., BCBA01:49:56

In Episode 136  Ben talks with Dr. Sonia Levy, A Black, Jewish behaviour analyst and lead author on a seminal article in behaviour analysis entitled: A Look In The Mirror: How the Field of Behavior Analysis Can Become Antiracist. This article was written not long after the brutal murder of George Floyd by police in 2020 and the beginning of a new social justice movement that captured the minds and hearts of people all over the world.  Many behavior analysts, behavior analytic companies, overarching associations, and certification boards put out statements condemning racism and formed committees and task forces committed to combating racism in the field of behaviour analysis.  It's been almost four years since the murder of George Floyd and this conversation serves as a check-in to see how far this field has come.

Sawson has experienced the trauma of war from the time she lay in her mother's womb as they fled wartime Liberia in the late 80s.  Now working to support families in the West Bank, refugees escaping to Lebanon, and therapists on the front lines,  Sawson and her colleagues are using what little resources they have available to them to effect change and build resilience for all affected by the horrors of war.
