22 Mar 2024Frank White: Exploring the Overview Effect00:39:04

In this episode, we had the privilege of exploring the profound insights of Frank White regarding the overview effect—a cognitive shift experienced by astronauts when viewing Earth from space. Frank shared with us his journey into the realm of space exploration and his research into this remarkable phenomenon. We delved into the core characteristics of the overview effect, including the sense of awe, interconnectedness, and profound appreciation for our planet that astronauts report experiencing. Frank highlighted the transformative nature of this experience and its potential implications for humanity's future, from space exploration to environmental conservation efforts.

Throughout the conversation, we explored the cultural and individual variations in the experience of the overview effect, as well as its intersection with spirituality, and philosophy. We discussed the role of technology, such as virtual reality simulations, in simulating aspects of the overview effect for those of us bound to Earth. Frank also shared captivating anecdotes from his interviews with astronauts, providing fascinating insights into their perspectives and the enduring impact of the overview effect on their lives and actions upon returning to Earth. This episode served as a thought-provoking exploration of the overview effect, leaving us with a deeper appreciation for the fragility and interconnectedness of our planet and a renewed sense of wonder about the vastness of the cosmos.

Professor Sara Seager is an astrophysicist and a Professor of Physics, Professor of Planetary Science, and a Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where she holds the Class of 1941 Professor Chair.  She has been a pioneer in the vast and unknown world of exoplanets, planets that orbit stars other than the sun. Her ground-breaking research ranges from the detection of exoplanet atmospheres to innovative theories about life on other worlds to development of novel space mission concepts.

In space missions for planetary discovery and exploration, she was the Deputy Science Director of the MIT-led NASA Explorer-class mission TESS; she was PI of the JPL-MIT CubeSat ASTERIA; is a lead of the Starshade Rendezvous Mission (a space-based direct imaging exoplanet discovery concept under technology development) to find a true Earth analog orbiting a Sun-like star; and most recently has directed a mission concept study to find signs of life or life itself in the Venus atmosphere and is PI of a small mission to Venus targeted for launch in 2023.

Her research earned her a MacArthur “genius” grant and other accolades including: membership in the US National Academy of Sciences; the Sackler Prize in the Physical Sciences, the Magellanic Premium Medal; and has been awarded one of Canada’s highest civilian honors, appointment as an Officer of the Order of Canada. 23 Jul 2021Jeffrey Roth: Film Director behind "The Wonder of It All" an intimate documentary00:41:15

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the Earth." These words, spoken by President John F. Kennedy in May 1961, changed the lives of twelve Americans who walked on the moon. The Wonder of it All focuses on the Apollo astronauts; Buzz Aldrin, Alan Bean, Edgar Mitchell, John Young, Charles Duke, Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt, as they reflect on the training, the tragedies, being on the moon and the impact of space travel. They became heroes to a nation, fulfilled their dream of setting foot on another world, and forever changed the way we see ourselves.

In this episode of Astro Ben Podcast, Ben sits down with film director Jeffrey Roth. Jeff makes TV shows like "How I Met Your Mother," but is currently re-releasing his hit documentary "The Wonder of It All," which focuses on the rarely-told human side of the men behind the Apollo missions through thoughtful and candid accounts from seven moonwalkers.

14 Oct 2022Avi Loeb: theoretical physicist who works on astrophysics and cosmology00:37:16

Avi Loeb is an Israeli-American theoretical physicist who works on astrophysics and cosmology and is a Professor of Science at Harvard University. He had been the longest serving chair of Harvard's Department of Astronomy, founding director of Harvard's Black Hole Initiative and director of the Institute for Theory and Computation (within the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics). In July 2021, Avi became head of The Galileo Project. The project was inspired by the detection of ʻOumuamua' and by release of the Office of the Director of National Intelligence report on Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP).

In this episode, Ben and Avi discuss how Oumuamua (the first interstellar object detected to pass through the solar system) could be space junk or it could be a message in a bottle from an extra terrestrial civilisation. They discuss the importance of interstellar archeology and why we should be looking further for evidence that we are not the only sentient beings in the universe!
