01 Sep 2024EP 152 ON WRITING BLOCKBUSTER MOVIES FT: NIREN BHATT00:48:53

Niren Bhatt needs no intro. A very successful writer with a range of box office hits from Stree 2, which did 400 cr. plus business, to another hit of the year Munjya. You can google Niren Bhatt and see his writing across genres, many of which you would have heard or seen.

But, more than the box office figures what is interesting to know is how does Niren Bhatt think? Because writing is a thinking process- and the way you think is the way you will structure, the way you will choose the right elements for your story, the right scene perspective, and the way to move the audience; in his case SWAY THE AUDIENCE.

Suchita digs Niren on multiple levels, and you can't miss the humour and get swayed.

1) Writing across genres.
2) Writing is a thinking process- HOW DO YOU THINK?
3) Maslow's hierarchy and the intent of self- actualization!
4) The detailed Writing process- which has to be fulfilling.
5) The Syd Fields, The Robert Mckees- And the template of screen writing?
6) From playwriting to ScriptWriting.
7) Advice from Gulzar Saab.
8) WRITER'S BLOCK- is fictional!
10)First Draft - VOMIT DRAFT to 15- 16th Final Draft.
11) SCRIPT LITERACY AND BOUNCING BOARDS- Who are you sharing your scripts with, to read- VERY IMP.
12) The rejections, traumas, imposter syndromes.
13) Importance of a DREAM PRODUCER-
14) Market research/ Algorithms- Analysis is a double edged sword?
15) What is it that your producers of Stree 2 and Munjya are DOING RIGHT?
16) The analysis of the elements of genre.
17) PLS DO NOT ASK FOR SO MANY NARRATIONS AND THEN REJECT C, TRAUMAS, MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

Knowing the INTENT and purpose of what ever work you are doing, will drive it in the right direction- in this case MASLOW'S HIERARCHY OF SELF- ACTUALIZATION ! And, the moment you know this- you will set a clear direction for your life and your values, your purpose- which is all interlinked with the kind of work you want to do!! Great takeaway.

Reflect and Enjoy!

This snacky episode of THE ARTISTS podcast condenses our year 2023,our journey, insights, memorable moments and the most heard episodes.

"At the beginning of the year, we kicked off with our 115th episode, delving into the making of 'Joyland' with one of our favourite filmmakers. In total, we've clocked 27 episodes, averaging around 2 and a half episodes each month, even with a festive break and our other commitments. Not too shabby!"

According to Spotify Wrapped data, our most downloadable episode was number 123, '9000 Feature Length Films.' Thank you to all the amazing guests who contributed to the diverse discussions on our podcast. Your engagement, messages, and social media tags have meant the world to us." Also our episode 121 on REACHING ACTORS was specially acknowledged by a lot of listeners- genuinely trying to make good cinema. We had a good listenership of Ep 130 the only episode on documentaries. We also spoke at length on audience in small towns in Ep 139.

We didn't shy away from controversial topics either.

In our snacky episodes, we ranted about ChatGPT, algorithms, and even took on the Oscars.

Our special series on "artists and mental health" covered crucial topics like synchronicities, forgiveness therapy, ambition, vulnerabilities—all vital qualities in the life of an artist."

"We dived into some significant events, such as the WGA strike in episode 126. Exploring the business side, we shared insights on building arts and culture startups in episode 136 and discussed the genius of Shakespeare in episode 140. Not to forget, our deep dives into Oppenheimer and Barbie in our snacky episode."

18 Mar 2023EP 121 REACHING ACTORS FT: GIRISH JOHAR00:45:55

I'm sure all of you heard the amazing speech by one of the best storytellers, Charlie Kaufmann, "Don’t get trapped in their world of box office numbers. You don't work for them. You don’t work for the world of box office numbers. You work for the world. Don't worry about how to pitch, don't pitch. Be nervous, be vulnerable. Make your story honest and tell it. "

But, how much of this will be applicable in the real world of Film financing:)

Our guest for EP 121 is Producer and Film business expert Girish Johar.
Suchita digs many things to begin with getting your project green-lit- which is a chicken and egg situation when it comes to getting a saleable actor. Three target areas that can resolve this problem and how can filmmakers, producers/ studios and actors, synergise, to tell a story of international calibre- because that is what the audience has got hooked onto, post the pandemic!

Enjoy!!

27 Aug 2024EP 151 On Agnès Varda FT: Carrie Rickey00:55:36

A Complicated Passion: The Life and Work of Agnès Varda, is the book by award- winning film critic Carrie Rickey.

Rickey traces Varda’s three remarkable careers—as still photographer, as filmmaker, and as installation artist. She explains how Varda was a pioneer in blurring the lines between documentary and fiction, using the latest digital technology and carving a path for women in the movie industry. She demonstrates how Varda was years ahead of her time in addressing sexism, abortion, labor exploitation, immigrant rights, and race relations with candor and incisiveness. She makes clear Varda’s impact on contemporary figures like Ava DuVernay, Greta Gerwig, Barry Jenkins, the Safdie brothers, and Martin Scorsese, who called her one of the Gods of cinema. And she delves into Varda’s incredibly rich social life with figures such as Harrison Ford, Jean-Luc Godard, Jim Morrison, Susan Sontag, and Andy Warhol, and her nearly forty-year marriage to the celebrated director Jacques Demy.

Suchita talks to Carrie about this most important book on Agnes Varda who defined the French New Wave, inspired an entire generation of filmmakers, and was recognized with major awards at the Cannes, Berlin, and Venice Film Festivals, as well as an honorary Oscar at the Academy Awards.

Digs:

1) Varda and her relationships with other Artists. She got to the essence very fast. Her ability to connect with people as a photographer and storyteller was immemse.

2) Transforming from still image to moving pictures to 3 dimensional spaces- almost like a 3 Act of life!!

3) The approach as a filmmaker that was so distinct from her director husband Demy. Her approach was to discover deeper aspects of things.

4) Varda started making movies without knowing anything about movies- without having even have watched many films- and so she found her own language, her own grammar.

5) Opening up to arts, creativity and filmmaking to create a new syntax.

6) Truffaut's non acceptance of Varda as a director and his reviews in Cahiers du cinema.

7) A very imporant difference between the French and the American studios financing movies-

8) How photography taught her to capture the decisive moment!

9) 1958 when her film got into the Cannes festival was she accepted into the community of french filmmakers and new wave filmmakers?

10) The long marriage to another brilliant filmmaker Demy

11) Varda's relationship with Jim Morrison and his death- and how his funeral was for less than 8 minutes!

12) Varda with Warhol, Susan Sontag, Truffaut.

13) Scorses's immense admiration for Varda.

Enjoy this longish episode, and check out the book that is out now !!

Most of us if not all of us are fans of DC, MARVEL, and of course the DARK KNIGHT.

As comic con begins next week in the U.S we try and understand this journey from the CEO and President of the iconic brand Amar Chitra Katha., Preeti Vyas ; we dig on how comic books stay afloat in a fragmented and over saturated content market and more importantly designing characters for todays 7 year olds ( this looks tougher than a start up and making movies) and creating content when all are creators.

Digs:

1) Journey from a Comic book to a Graphic Novel.
2)India at Comic Con- where are we internationally?
3) Quality and strategy in an oversaturated content market
4) Creating content for audience that is a creator.
5)creating characters for todays 7 year olds- the tiktoking generation.
6)A cultural shift influencing storytelling.
7)Did Marvel swallow Hollywood- a gentle mention.:)
8) Future of comics in the content space.

02 Feb 2025EP 157 BENEGAL ON BENEGAL Ft: Dev Benegal00:56:21

Who Was Shyam Benegal as a Person?

How did he think? What was his style of working? And how did his worldview shape not just his films, but also the people around him?

Shyam Benegal wasn’t just a filmmaker—he was a visionary who reshaped Indian cinema. His influence extended beyond his own films, shaping generations of storytellers, including his nephew, Dev Benegal—an award-winning filmmaker who carved his own path while carrying forward the spirit of fearless, independent storytelling.

In this fascinating conversation, Suchita digs deep with Dev Benegal, exploring his cinematic journey—one that collided with legends, challenged conventions, and uncovered the truths of filmmaking. From the importance of scripts to finding your unique voice, this episode is packed with invaluable insights.

🎬 Did you know?

  • Bong Joon-ho watches a film a day.
  • Werner Herzog watches just 3-4 films a year.

Does watching too many films dilute your voice, or does it sharpen your vision?

And then there’s the question of scripts. If movies are ultimately made on the editing table, should scripts ever be considered final? Should filmmakers abandon audience testing in pursuit of raw, unfiltered storytelling?

Mira Nair once said, "Every morning you wake up, it’s like going to war." Because filmmaking is both a battle and a revelation.

🚗 ROAD, MOVIE is getting re-released in theatres—a reminder of cinema’s power to transport, to distill details into density.

This, and much more—filmmaking lessons, life insights, and untold stories—with Dev Benegal.

11 Feb 2023EP 118 "BLUES" AS A CULTURAL MOVEMENT FT: JAY & JAIRAM00:33:35

The origin of blues is ambiguous, but some details mention a 19th-century origin in the southern plantations. The inventors of blues were slaves, and descendants of slaves- African in origin, who sang while they toiled in the cotton and vegetable fields; heart-wrenching, empathetic, could be the reason I identify with this music genre the most. And, our guests for today are part of the only kind of Blues festival in Asia- The Mahindra Blues. Please welcome Jay Shah Vice-president of cultural outreach at the Mahindra Group and, VG Jairam, a veteran in the live entertainment industry.

Digs:

1) Why Blues and not Jazz!
2) Cultural Movement vs Cultural Marketing.
3) Intention behind a cultural movement.
4) Building a strong community- what does it take?
5) Spreading the BLUES- The Vision.

Enjoy!!

04 Feb 2023EP 117 WHO ARE YOU MAKNG YOUR FILMS FOR!! FT: JONATHAN ROSENBAUM00:24:55

There were approx 15000 plus films (15858) submitted to Sundance 2023. More than half of them were made by first-time directors.
There were 4,061 feature-length films,1,662 were from the U.S., and 2,399 were international.
Out of this, only 101 feature films had to be selected for the final competition section of the festival. With this rush for making a movie, what are the chances that a worthy film will go unnoticed?

Our guest for this episode is Film critic Jonathan Rosenbaum.

Mr.Rosenbaum was the head film critic for The Chicago Reader from 1987 to 2008. He has published and edited numerous books about cinema and has contributed to such notable film publications as Sight and sound, Cahiers du cinéma, and Film Comment. Regarding Mr. Rosenbaum, French New Wave director Jean-Luc Godard said, "I think there is a very good film critic in the United States today, a successor of James Agee, and that is Jonathan Rosenbaum. He's one of the best; we don't have writers like him in France today. He's like André Bazin."

Digs:

1) 40 years plus in the landscape of movie-making- what are the most significant changes besides the OTT?

2) Being a part of Sight and sound polls of the best 100 films- what are the criteria for choosing the best for 100-plus years?

3) 15000 plus films got submitted to Sundance, what defines a movie being selected, and with the rush, how many worthy films can go unnoticed? Chances are many!!

4) When we say South Asian Cinema what are the few things that come to your mind?

5) David Cronenberg's Spider and the times of piecing together- Cinema.

6) On Godard and A Woman is a Woman.

7) On the adaptation of literary works (Dostoevsky and Chekhov) for films like Winters Sleep- what does the future hold?

Enjoy!!

03 Dec 2023Ep 140 THE GENIUS OF SHAKESPEARE FT: DARREN FREEBURRY-JONES00:40:28

How would you feel like living in a town where there is Shakespeare parked in every corner, staring at you!!! And how would it feel to be surrounded by actors who only play Shakespeare and his characters all the time!!
Dr Darren Freebury-Jones is a Lecturer in Shakespeare Studies at the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust in Stratford-upon-Avon. He is the author of multiple books, all having a relation with Shakespeare.

In this fun chat, we talk about not just the 400-year-plus legacy of Shakespeare, but also the strong influence of his work that keeps inspiring, filmmakers across the globe. And why?
What makes Shakespeare this genius- his deep understanding of the human mind and the human condition, or his belief in something beyond what we see?

To be or not to be? Is that the question for you? Or as Darren puts it Let it be.

I do not know if there is any writer, for me who comes closer to Shakespeare- not just his multidimensional character but also how he thought about his acts and plot points and structuring - literally being the innovator of what we are following as a template. It is complex, yet it is simple- to be or not to be, or just let it be.

06 Apr 2025EP 159 CONTENT VS DATA FT: EVAN SHAPIRO00:40:22

This episode of The Artists Podcast promises a captivating exploration of the evolving media landscape, featuring renowned producer, professor, and media cartographer Evan Shapiro. Known for mapping the tech and entertainment ecosystem with sharp insights, Shapiro’s work in his Media War & Peace newsletter has helped shape the conversation around the future of media. With a background that includes running TV networks, winning an Emmy and two Peabody Awards, and speaking at prestigious events like SXSW and MIPCOM, Shapiro brings unparalleled expertise to the table.

In this episode, Shapiro dissects the mess the media universe is in and addresses the burning question: Is content still king, or has data taken over?

Key highlights include:

  • Data as the Audience's Voice

  • Algorithms vs. Creativity

  • The Global Fascination with Adolescence:

  • The Mass Middle: Streaming giants like Netflix, Amazon, Disney, and Jio are making strategic moves toward appealing to the mass middle.

  • Shakespearean Testing of Content: Shapiro draws a parallel to Shakespeare’s method of testing his plays with live audiences. Should we be testing our content in a similar way before launching it into the world?

25 Nov 2023EP 139 AUDIENCE IN SMALL TOWNS FT. AKKSHAY RATHIE00:43:00

What is the taste of audiences in small towns of India? How different it it? OR is it not after the arrival of OTT? How do they think? What do they enjoy? Why are filmmakers and content creators not including them in their creation? or is it OK to include them?

Some of these pertinent questions and more with our guest Akkshay Rathie.
Mr. Akkshay Rathie is a film exhibitor & distributor with operations spread across the central Indian states of Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh & Chhattisgarh. While carrying forward a 70 years old legacy in the show business, Akkshay has been a pioneer in the process of consolidation of the film exhibition sector by orchestrating a first of its kind alliance between single screen cinemas of his chain with the Cinepolis, one of the largest exhibition chains in the world that operates from Mexico.

A few tidbits that we got was: When Gadar 2 trailer came out- there was nothing expected out of it. In fact the word of mouth was complete opposite to the final results of the film - it broke all the previous records, myths and understanding of boxoffice in India for everyone including the makers.
Movies like Shubh Mangal Svdhan a small town story, did well not in small towns bur urban india.
Did you know that 45 percent of the screens in India are in the South- with north India having comparatively lesser film screens.

14 Jan 2024EP 143 ON MAKING GUJARATI FILMS FT: DARSHAN T & TAPAN V00:45:11

One of the most important thing in any film, and more so in a regional or an independent films is the camaraderie between the director and the DOP, where the two have to work together to not just design the film effectively, but also to deliver the film within a time span- to shoot the film in those number of days.
The most effective camaraderie is a good friendship.

Our guests are Darshan Trivedi, the director, and Tapan Vyas the DOP, on to their 5th film together, that is releasing on Jan 19th.

Also, a great point that we should always get reminded of- it is a great joy to work with people who understand the purpose of cinema. It is greater joy and good fortune if your film gets to the theatres.

Some key take aways is: Filmmaking especially for a director takes so much energy that it affects all area of their life, personal professional and- so be mindful when choosing to take this as a profession.
Be very mindful in collaborating with people, and choose only the ones who have a true passion for cinema and are not there just for money or fame or other extracurricular activities that they think is glamour.
