For Naked & Famous Denim founder Brandon Svarc, denim is art and escapism.

In an interview with Roadtrip Media, Svarc said, “I remember knowing and realizing that there’s no way that my imagination is going to get any better as I get older. I knew that as a kid, as a little boy, you have the greatest, most powerful imagination ever so when I try to design crazy things, I just try to remember being an 8-year-old boy.”

Svarc pours that creativity into Naked & Famous Denim, a brand renowned for design as well as an ability to toe the line between quality and kitsch—manufacturing both clean, distress-free Japanese raw denim and novelty pieces like rainbow fade denim, glow-in-the-dark varieties, scratch-n-sniff pieces, blanket-lined styles, and a slew of other unique creations.

And the Canadian native is proud that he’s doing it all from Canada, where the line is manufactured.

For the past 11 years, Svarc has played an active role in how the company’s products are conceived and created, traveling between Japan and Canada to design, source, strategize and organize the denim powerhouse from behind the scenes.

24 May 2022Ed Parcaut00:27:07
Born in Burlingame, California, Ed Parcaut moved around a lot in childhood, following his dad’s work at telephone company Bell. After his father’s death, Parcaut wound up in Turlock, California. A skinny kid, Parcaut played sports like soccer before graduating and enlisting in the Navy.

After 18 months at Camp Pendleton, it came time for Parcaut to choose a specialty. Willing to do anything that wasn’t on a ship, Parcaut ended up studying physical therapy, concurrently getting a bachelor’s degree in marketing and a master’s in international business and marketing.

After getting out of the Navy, Parcaut gave the tech world a try before realizing it wasn’t for him. He turned to work for his neighbor’s mortgage company, which is what stuck. Parcaut’s love for numbers and helping people have kept him in the mortgage field ever since.

In August of 2018, Parcaut accidentally fell into the radio world when the creator of a defunct radio show approached him to see if he would take it over, understanding his passion for helping people own homes. Though the technology may be a bit outdated, Parcaut’s show, Real Estate Jerky, is going strong.

As a veteran, Parcaut loves to work with other vets, wanting to be there for a population that has often been mistreated. Having a strong understanding of the value of a helping hand, Parcaut makes an effort to help his employees grow as people, hoping to one day sell his business to them.

This helping spirit makes coaching a natural evolution for Parcaut, who has experience being on stage speaking to thousands of people as part of an initiative called No Homeowners Left Behind, which helped to modify people’s loans during the 2008 recession. In the mortgage industry and beyond, Parcaut is committed to paying it forward.

19 Jan 2021Talor Zamir00:37:16

Talor Zamir - In 2013, Talor was wracked with intense, inexplicable pain and inflammation that was putting his health, his hope, and his family’s financial future in danger. He could not type more than a couple sentences without feeling massive pain throughout his arms. Desperate for relief, or even an answer, he turned to multiple medical professionals, both mainstream and alternative, to no avail. He deteriorated to the point where he had to use a voice dictation software because he couldn't type more than a couple sentences without massive pain. His anxiety about his ability to support his family escalated to panic.

Talor refused to give up, he came to the all-important realization that INflammation comes from INside of you. He had an epiphany. He started to change what he put IN his body and mind instead of treating it from the outside. This new understanding began to change everything. He returned from his quest, victorious, having been led to the solutions he had all along been seeking. How he successfully put out the fire of pain and inflammation is why he created Peak Performance. He now has a new quest: to help others transform their health and life in the same way he did.

21 Nov 2023James Dixon00:26:13

James Dixon's life has been marked by immense hardship since his early life growing up in the notorious Cabrini Green neighborhood in Chicago. A catastrophic accident left him paralyzed from the neck down, and the daily struggles of caring for him became too much for his overwhelmed mother who subsequently signed over her parental rights, leaving him essentially orphaned. This daunting experience pushed young James to the edge, instigating him to contemplate suicide at such a tender age. He spent his nights reflecting on his situation through a mirror on the ceiling placed there to foster communication due to his paralysis. The trials continued one morning when he woke to find his leg had been amputated, an act done without his prior knowledge or consent, pushing him further into a realm of fear and uncertainty. James entered his 11th birthday confronted with a grim reality - he had lost his mobility, his family and now his leg, making for an extraordinarily challenging childhood. Despite the adversities he faced, James Dixon stands as a testament to human resilience, embodying a remarkable story of survival and strength.

20 Feb 2024Rachel Miller00:27:47

Rachel Miller's early years were marked by the tranquility of homeschooling within a conservative household, a place where social opportunities were not as abundant. Venturing beyond the familiar, she stepped into college life with an uncool badge, but fostered an unwavering determination to redefine her social standing. Rachel's epiphany that the human craving for connection is universal set the gears of transformation in motion.
She honed an extraordinary talent for social mirroring, identifying and reflecting the unique quirks of those around her, and in doing so, she began to cultivate a blossoming garden of friendships. College years were a time of exploration for Rachel, where she admittedly wielded her social prowess with a tinge of manipulation, competing for the size of her friend circle.

However, self-awareness sparked evolution in Rachel's approach to relationships. She redirected her gift for connecting with others from a measure of popularity to a force for good. By matching like-minded individuals, Rachel turned her personal insight into community impact, building a business that celebrated connections, not just collected them. The cornerstone of her success lay in helping others intertwine their lives with valuable resources and companions, proving that the once self-proclaimed uncool girl could indeed become a cool architect of human networks and a catalyst for meaningful relationships.

29 Nov 2022John Ruhlin00:33:00

John Ruhlin will tell you, “how you love and treat people will open more doors than you can imagine.” In fact, one gifting experience (Brooks Brother experiment) has opened more doors than $10 Million in advertising could ever do.

After applying principles of generosity learned from “Attorney Paul,” John started selling the largest deals in Cutco history out of 1.5 million other reps and distributors. Yes. 1.5 million. Not only was he gifting knives but he was being asked to speak on stages around the country to teach sales and marketing teams how to build relationships in unconventional ways. Simple but powerful things like focusing your care on the executive’s spouse, the assistant, and kids.

Ruhlin Group started in 2000 and quickly broadened gifting options and strategies, but many of the original principles never changed. Knowing how and when to give gifts is just as important as what to gift. These “minor” details and expert knowledge have been tested and proven over a decade to bring a guaranteed “wow” to any industry from financial services to manufacturing widgets.

Today John and his team have created gift packages for some of the largest companies and pro sports teams in the world, but their mission and heart is to serve and take relationships for mid-sized, privately owned businesses to a new level using their Proven Process.

After spending a long time deliberating on things like is self publishing a book a good idea, John decided to write a book that would share his ideology and the way he works in his industry to reach new levels of success. But sure to check out John’s new book, Giftology here: giftologybook.com

11 Feb 2019Philip McKernan00:37:07

Philip McKernan is an inspirational coach who works with people to help them not only align with their life goals but figure out what those goals truly are.

In his work, he pushes people and supports them in a manner that encourages them to figure out for themselves who they are, where they should work, and what they should be doing.

He compels them to discover the relationships and the goals that mark true happiness in their lives, and then he feeds them information back to them and gets them fired up so that they can make the changes they need to make and get truly fired up.

Philip’s purpose in doing so is to prevent any one of the people he helps from having regrets down the line. He says he may seem like a pain the ass sometimes because of the work he must do to bring out people’s passions, but in the end, he admits that he has a substantial amount of compassion for the people he helps.

One thing Philip finds surprising, though, is the fact that many people find him intimidating. He actually recently noticed a person at an event whom he had seen in the past every single year, but never had the chance to connect with.

Philip went over to say hello to this man and received a surprising answer. Matt told him, “I watch everything you do, really respect your work, but you scare the shit out of me.” With that, Philip began laughing, but Matt was being serious.

He addressed this sense of intimidation that people get and says: "I just don't know how to turn it on and off. There's just Philip McKernan. There's just one Philip McKernan and I think what they're really afraid of is facing their own individual truth. They're afraid of facing their own individual pain and having an opportunity to deal with it."

The role that Philip has taken on of being a mirror for other people to learn about themselves has caused them to push him away in some cases. He explains that some people judge him and others outright ignore him. He says a lot of times that happens before they even give him a chance.

As part of Philip’s work, he has spent a lot of time calling people out. He has what some might call a “strong BS filter” and he’s not afraid to be vocal about it.

He spends a lot of time listening to what people think, and a lot of time replying to them with the facts that he sees. Oftentimes, those views don’t line up.

Interestingly, social media plays a huge part in being dishonest with oneself, and that’s something that Philip is touching on frequently with his clients, new and old. People tend to put their best foot forward, and he says those white lies can have a bigger impact--and meaning.

His work is all about helping people recognize the lies they are telling themselves and then, even more importantly, helping them get down to the honest truth about what they really want in life.

Philip has helped countless clients achieve the life of their dreams. You can learn more at his website, philipmckernan.com.

27 Sep 2022George Bryant00:40:55

George Bryant - After nearly a decade of working with some of the brightest minds in the world, I started a podcast.

I moved my family to Montana and rebuilt everything after instantly losing seven figures in a global pandemic.

Despite the chaos, the results were incredible and The Relationships Beat Algorithms model was born.

My audience quickly grew, and I started masterminds and live events again.

The more I interacted with my audience, the more I realized:

“You never have a marketing problem, you have a relationship problem.”

Today, I am dedicated to empowering entrepreneurs to deepen their love affairs with their customers.

As the years wore on, fate led Jim to a mentor, a friend’s father, who sent him on a journey to learn about his brain and learn how to use it. Little did Jim know, it would take him down the long path of discovering different learning habits, including accelerated learning systems and tactics.

29 Jun 2020Chris Thrall00:29:20

Chris Thrall. After leaving the Royal Marines to run a successful business in Asia, Chris found himself homeless, suffering acute mental illness from crystal meth addiction and working for the Hong Kong triads.

Declining conventional support, Chris rebuilt his life to become a qualified pilot, skydiver, adventurer and bestselling author. He has expeditioned to eighty countries on seven continents and raised thousands for charity.

An extreme-endurance athlete, in 2018 Chris ran an ultra-marathon a day for thirty-seven days, unsupported, the length of Britain, to raise awareness of veterans suicide, and in 2019 a quadruple ironman consisting of a 9.6-mile swim, 450-mile cycle and a 107-mile run.

Chris firewalked forty metres on red-hot coals to raise money to work with street children in war-torn Mozambique. He's driven volunteer journalists to India and back by bus to highlight global poverty. Chris was awarded the Second Level Commendation of the Finnish Nation on the grounds of Human Generosity for his ability to inspire others. Backpacking through every country in North, Central and South America, he dived off the famous cliff in Acapulco, caught piranhas and survived without equipment in the Amazon rainforest and snorkelled with bull sharks off Belize. In colder climes, he has scuba-dived with leopard seals and icebergs in the sub-zero waters of the Antarctic Polar Circle.

Chris wrote the bestselling memoir Eating Smoke, a frank yet humorous account of his time down and out in Hong Kong. He has appeared on numerous podcasts and programs and two award-wining radio plays have been made about his life. Forty Nights, Chris’s second memoir, details how the life-changing experience of addiction led to his enlightenment.

Chris has a degree in youth and community work and is a substance-misuse/addiction specialist. He presents this topic from a progressive perspective. Along with trademark Royal Marines humour, Chris’s fascinating story, inspirational message and passionate approach appeals to those unlocking their potential and corporate clients concerned with workforce wellbeing.

06 Aug 2024Tip Entitlement00:05:08

Welcome to The Art of Making Things Happen with Steve Sims. In this eye-opening episode, Steve tackles the controversial topic of tipping culture in America and what he calls the "disease of entitled tipping." Steve shares his recent experiences shopping for jeans and hardware, where he received helpful service without any expectation of a tip. However, his trip to a coffee shop left him frustrated when the barista, who provided minimal service, automatically flipped the screen to start the tip at 20%. Steve questions why we've strayed from rewarding genuine service and instead succumbed to peer pressure and guilt when it comes to tipping. He argues that this sense of entitlement is unique to America and worries that if we don't address it now, it will only worsen over time. Join Steve as he challenges us to rethink our tipping habits and advocates for a return to appreciating and rewarding exceptional service.

13 Dec 2022Jeff Lerner00:31:12

Jeff Lerner; I have been shaped by my choices and I regret none of them. At 16, I chose to get myself fired from the only job I ever had. At 17, I chose to drop out of high school and become a musician.

At 18, I chose to start my first business and also made the choices that led to its failure. In my 20s, I chose to start 10 more businesses after that first failure and failed at them too. And I chose to keep going still, ultimately founding multiple successful companies and generating over $100 million in sales.

In my 30s, I also chose to go to therapy, start working on myself, and become the husband/father/man I was born to be.

At 39, instead of retiring I chose to commit my life to helping others and developed “the 3X3 Success Matrix”, a complete life operating system for entrepreneurs. That in turn became the foundation for ENTRE, the world’s first “Entrepreneurial Life Design” platform and one of the fastest growing education companies in the world with over 200,000 students in its first 3 years.

All my life I have chosen to disregard the advice of the people who wanted me to play it safe. Instead, I chose to believe I was created for a life less ordinary and followed my heart. I believe every person on earth has that same choice to make – each of us can choose to unlock our full potential by believing in and developing ourselves.

Jeff’s brand new book, Unlock Your Potential was an instant Amazon bestseller helping people world wide to unlock their full potential.

23 Jan 2019Alice Little00:42:34

Alice Little is the number one sex entrepreneur and relationship expert. Alice Little stands at 4’8” but her presence is much bigger. She explains how being able to speak about the most uncomfortable, most stigmatized topic, makes her an excellent communicator - something that people come to the ranch for far more than sex. Some interesting things about the Bunny Ranch where Alice works are:

  • The facility has an on site doctor that the women see once a week
  • Clients can either request a specific woman or participate in a lineup to find who interests them most
  • The difference between a legal prostitute and an illegal one is that the legal one has complete control of who they work with or choose not to work with
  • Some of the clients at the Ranch aren’t even there for sex

If not for sex, why are they there? Alice speaks about all the distractions in day to day life and how people are no longer present and in the moment. The need for intimacy and companionship is the largest driving force that brings people to the Ranch. Alice is an open book and can provide that to her clients. Throughout the episode she speaks to the things she looks for in a client as well as breaks down some of the walls up around sex.

  • Outward appearance doesn’t indicate who you are on the inside, and what is on the inside is always far more important
  • In order the be better communicators, we need to learn to be present in the moment, have and maintain direct eye contact, and to be comfortable in our own skin
  • Content is superior to appearance and leads to the genuine and authentic
  • Sex can be cheap, the value is in the intimacy
  • While love can have a sexual component there is far more to love than sex and on the flip side sex can simply be an act or it can be an act tied in with an emotion
  • Social media and pornography are a caricature of reality

What’s next for Alice? Given her ability to communicate so effortlessly about sex and being a sex worker, she’s looking to tackle education. Only 13 out of the 50 US States require scientifically accurate sexual education. As a sex worker, she’s seen the negative effects of this first hand. She brings her open book personality to her podcast and website and is ready and willing to answer any questions you might have. Just don’t objectify her or you’ll be in for some serious schooling about what it really means to be a sex worker and the power of communication.

23 Jan 2019Chris Voss Former FBI Hostage Negotiator00:29:06

Chris Voss. To get to the level of being a hostage negotiator for the FBI, you’ve got to be an skilled communicator. Chris Voss is just that and no stranger to making things happen. In this episode he shares communication insights and teaches that negotiation is perishable.

  • Look for how people tell the truth - we only tell the truth one way but we lie 7 or 8 different ways
  • Truth comes in the corrections - if you can get someone to correct you, they’ll feel authoritative and in charge and they’ll give more information
  • Smiling is a good business practice - smiling at someone positively changes their brain chemistry and makes them more open to communication
  • We are 31% smarter in a positive frame of mind
  • The old saying ‘seek first to understand and then to be understood’ can be expanded to seek first to show how/what you understand because that helps the other side open up
  • “You’re right” is a convo ender - the other side doesn’t feel understood so they just want you to stop talking
  • If you can call out the elephant in the room, you are seen as more authoritative, responsible and responsive
  • 63-64 reps build the skill in your head

In addition to the reps building the skill, Chris also had these great tips about becoming an excellent communicator:

  • Take your time and let the convos come to you
  • Low stakes practice for your high stakes performances
  • Make verbal observations ie, when someone says “do you have a minute to talk?” respond “sounds like there is something on your mind” - you’ll get to the root faster with a shorter conversation and the other party will feel understood
  • Whoever names price first loses; whoever is doing the most talking is losing
  • In conversations it should be 5:1 listening to talking. Use your five senses to listen

For more great information about communicating well and effectively, you can text FBIEMPATHY to 22828 - this gets you subscribed to Chris’ newsletter ‘The Edge’. You can also check out his book ‘Never Split the Difference; Negotiate like Your Life Depends On It.’ You can learn more about Chris at blackswanltd.com

26 Dec 2023Mark Hawwa00:46:24

Mark Hawwa is a visionary who transformed a simple idea into a global movement. Inspired by a GQ magazine image of Don Draper, played by Jon Hamm in "Mad Men," sitting suavely on a classic Matchless motorcycle, Mark yearned to shatter the rough-edged stereotype often associated with bikers. He envisioned a world where motorcyclists were seen in a different light, not as the notorious one percenters or "bad boys," but as dapper individuals enjoying the ride of life.

With this image in mind, Mark created "The Distinguished Gentleman's Ride" (DGR), an event where riders don their finest suits and take to the city streets with open-faced helmets and wide grins. The inaugural DGR was driven by the desire to dress sharply, share a few laughs, and pivot away from the conventional biker image. Mark's initiative quickly outgrew its humble beginnings, blossoming into an international phenomenon that has reshaped the public's perception of motorcyclists across the globe. With a touch of elegance and a strong sense of community, Mark Hawwa has spearheaded a stylish revolution on two wheels, proving that change can begin with a simple ride through the heart of the city.
