Join me for this "in the trenches" homemaker portrait of my friend, Lana. While we at AoH define the "in the trenches" homemaker as one who is 10+ years into her journey with lots to manage in a busy household, Lana is very open about her time in the trenches of struggling to "love every minute" of parenting and homemaking. We talk about what to do with that unrealistic expectation. Lana is also a gifted photographer who specializes in newborn, family and branding portraits and she shares some tips to improve everyday photos. Historical Homemaker Hints: Leave Us A Review

15 Jun 2022 | Homemaker Portrait | Gwen Cunningham | 01:04:32
To kick off Season 7, I’m chatting with my friend, Gwen Cunningham, about her 36-year practice of The Art of Home. Gwen worked as a social worker and group home supervisor while keeping a home with her husband, Paul ,who taught high school. Together they raised 3 kids and just recently gained another adult child in Paul’s daughter, Jen who sought out her birth father about 4 years ago. God is telling an AMAZING redemptive story through them which Gwen graciously shares with us in this interview. Besides that, she has so much wisdom to impart, the kind that comes with years of experience and it is my honor to share with you Gwen’s story of home.

They are past the newlywed stage and are working through how to prioritize marriage amidst a houseful of kids, schooling, activities, their husband’s career, and more. Life is busy and demands their constant attention in this stage. Kelly is no exception, but her approach to this busy season is refreshing. Here’s a hint, it requires boundaries based on her family’s values and intentionality to thrive within those boundaries. In today’s episode I am talking with In-the-Trenches homemaker, Naomi Fata. She’s been married 16 years and has 3 kids, ages 8 to 13. She homeschools and runs a sewing and alterations business out of her home--she is a very busy lady. We discuss how she has learned/is learning to balance homemaking, schooling and a home business through compromise, firm boundaries and letting go of some expectations. Naomi is passionate about teaching others how sewing can help them make the most of their clothing and home decor resources. Over the years, Naomi realized that this "stay-at-home dream life" she asked God for does not come with ease. It is challenging to manage it all, but she is learning to differentiate between what God has and has not called her to do in each new day. Whether running a home business or not, this principle applies to all of us as homemakers as we seek to thrive in our calling and not be distracted or overwhelmed by all the possibilities before us. I know you will be encouraged and learn something from Naomi's story of home.

Then we look at motivations (or the why) for establishing rhythms and routines, contrasting the world’s ideas vs what God has to say about our why. Next we talk about 4 rhythms of christian living; worship, rest, work and play—what those might look like and how we can use homemaking to help and not hinder these rhythms. 17 Jun 2024 | Monday Motivation #2 | The Magic of a Busy Box | 00:12:57
In today's Monday Motivation, I'm sharing my summer memories of creating from my grandmother's scrap box and how I carried that practice into my own home when my children were growing up. Whether to fill time on a rainy afternoon, keep little hands busy during travel or in waiting rooms, a Busy Box for your kids or grandkids will certainly spark creativity. Just remember, it's not really about the end result, it's the process and the memory you are making of being creative together. I'm also answering a listener question from The AoH Mail Bag about creating family and personal mission plans.

"There are homes in which there is nothing remarkable in the way of grandeur or elegance, yet the very atmosphere as you enter it is filled with sweetness like, 'the smell of a field that the Lord hath blessed'. It is the aroma of love, the love of Christ shed abroad in human hearts." ~JR Miller

One of the ways we can express love in our homemaking is to prioritize the family table. Slowing down long enough to gather and break bread together provides the family an opportunity to connect every day. In this episode we will look at things to consider regarding expectations and purpose as well as tips and ideas for setting the table and the mood and what to talk about once you are there.
