Amber's Homemaking Poem

Sacred + holy is the
ground of homemaking
In all its colors + forms

Intentionality + creativity
Used to create spaces
That are safe + warm
Dishes to wash
Floors to be swept
All the chores can feel mundane
But rest assured
In the Kingdom of God
None of your work is in vain

Through the windows of home
We see glimpses of heaven
A foretaste of what is to come
Rest for the weary
Peace for the hurting
Joy…and a place to belong
As we tend to the chores
Tend to the gardens
Or tend to delicate hearts

We are building
Into a legacy
That bids us to come take part
As you gather 'round your table
Bellies are nourished
And so are precious souls
Sanctification, growth

AND failure
It all happens within these walls
With each whispered prayer
Every hug shared
And every single load of washed clothes
With every held hand
And every meal prepared
A wise woman builds up her home
Sacred + holy is the
ground of homemaking
In all its colors + forms
A high + valuable calling
A precious gift from the Lord

She has walked through the joyful, but challenging waters of newlywed life, started a business from scratch, and faced some very dark valleys of grief and loss, and it is clear to see how the Lord has carried Abby through it all.

After working outside the home for nearly all of their married life, she came home full time last year to care for her children and work alongside Luke running their  short-term rental business on their beautiful 20 acre Texas hill country property, Bird Haus Farms. In the shift from work to being home full time, Michelle is learning to relinquish control to be available for the people around her.

On today’s episode I am chatting with my friend, Dani Hamilton. She is an in-the-trenches homemaking mama of 3 little boys and wife to husband, Luke who is a professional firefighter. Dani is an amazing artist, one of the most creative people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing. We bonded over our mutual love of art, sewing and all things crafty. So the subject of creativity and art comes up quite a lot in this full and fun conversation. Once again, I am blown away by the wisdom and insight of this younger generation of women!

In today’s show, I am chatting with in-the-trenches homemaker, Kelly Gundersen. Our in the trenches category includes homemakers who have been practicing more than 5 but less than 25 years. They are past the newlywed stage and are working through how to prioritize marriage amidst a houseful of kids, schooling, activities, their husband’s career, and more. Life is busy and demands their constant attention in this stage. Kelly is no exception, but her approach to this busy season is refreshing. Here’s a hint, it requires boundaries based on her family’s values and intentionality to thrive within those boundaries.

This deep dive is the first in a series on Four Pillars of Homemaking: Identity, Values & Priorities, Rhythms & Routines, and Community. We are going to contrast what God has to say about identity with what the world has to say about where to find your identity. Then we will look at some common identity thieves—things homemakers may be tempted to look to for identity and how to avoid falling into those traps.

05 Jul 2023Homemaker Portrait | Sarah Beaugh01:17:08

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

Today, I am bringing to you a brand new homemaker portrait of Sarah Beaugh. Married 22 years with three teen daughters she is what I would call a seasoned in -the-trenches homemaker and she has so much wisdom to share. Sarah found The Art of Home Podcast through social media but then after recognizing several names on past episodes started putting the dots together that we live in the same area and have several mutual acquaintances. I got to sit down with her in her lovely home a few weeks ago and get to know her better through this delightful homemaker portrait interview.

Today I am bringing you the very first Single Homemaker Portrait on The Art of Home. "Can a single woman be a homemaker," you may ask? Well, if she has a home, she certainly can be! Of course it will look different than a married homemaker who stays home to care for the house and children full-time. Elizabeth also has the unique experience of living 2 days out of every 6 in a fire station for her job as a paramedic firefighter.  We have a lot to chat about!

Kay reflects, "It's not my story, it's God's. I’m grateful that I went through what I did because that helps me to appreciate what I have today…because I see where God delivered me. 15 Nov 2023Homemaker Portrait | Naomi Fata01:21:04

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

In today’s episode I am talking with In-the-Trenches homemaker, Naomi Fata. She’s been married 16 years and has 3 kids, ages 8 to 13. She homeschools and runs a sewing and alterations business out of her home--she is a very busy lady. We discuss how she has learned/is learning to balance homemaking, schooling and a home business through compromise, firm boundaries and letting go of some expectations. Naomi is passionate about teaching others how sewing can help them make the most of their clothing and home decor resources.

Over the years, Naomi realized that this "stay-at-home dream life" she asked God for does not come with ease. It is challenging to manage it all, but she is learning to differentiate between what God has and has not called her to do in each new day. Whether running a home business or not, this principle applies to all of us as homemakers as we seek to thrive in our calling and not be distracted or overwhelmed by all the possibilities before us. I know you will be encouraged and learn something from Naomi's story of home.

We will start with a brief review of the 4 Pillars of Homemaking, then spend some time defining rhythms and routines-talking about the difference between the two and giving some examples of each. Then we look at motivations (or the why) for establishing rhythms and routines, contrasting the world’s ideas vs what God has to say about our why. Next we talk about 4 rhythms of christian living; worship, rest, work and play—what those might look like and how we can use homemaking to help and not hinder these rhythms. Finally we end with a few pitfalls to avoid when establishing rhythms and routines.

Married for over 40 years, Jan and her husband have raised 10 children, homeschooling them for many of those years…a topic which comes up a good bit in our conversation. When Jan and her husband married the were both new Christians so not only were they learning how to live together and create a harmonious home life, they were both learning how to faithfully walk with Christ, and it wasn’t always easy. We discuss some of the practical need for structure when living in a large family and Jan shares a little about her current season of homemaking which involves caring for her husband as he battles Parkinson’s disease. Jan shares many tips, a lot of practical advice and much wisdom throughout our conversation. I especially love that her advice is centered on the need to cultivate a deep abiding relationship with the Lord.

Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.

On to today’s homemaker portrait, I am chatting with Alecia Doty. She was nominated by her friend Tina Bergs. Here’s what Tina had to say about Alecia’s practice of the art of home: "Alecia makes her home a place where children are nurtured in the love of Christ and pointed to what is true, good, and beautiful. She is a welcoming hostess who intentionally uses her home as a place where souls can find rest, and be met with the love of Christ."

After spending an hour or so in conversation with Alecia, I can see why Tina gave such a glowing recommendation. Alecia has such great insight into the art of home. She poignantly explains that homemaking is a beautiful, hard, sanctifying, creative adventure; a high and holy calling which, if we allow, God will use to draw us to himself and transform us into the image of Jesus so that the Gospel will be displayed through our homemaking.

"There are homes in which there is nothing remarkable in the way of grandeur or elegance, yet the very atmosphere as you enter it is filled with sweetness like, 'the smell of a field that the Lord hath blessed'. It is the aroma of love, the love of Christ shed abroad in human hearts." ~JR Miller

We have an opportunity, homemakers, to cultivate a particular spiritual and relational fragrance in our homes. Will it be a sweet aroma or an offensive stench? Today I am sharing a little  story about the aroma of home, some of my favorite spice mixes and I'm pulling a classic cookbook From My Bookshelf that I think will help you in your homemaking journey.

In today's Monday Motivation I'm riffing on the popular Charlotte Mason idea of Mother Culture™ and applying it to the homemaker. Mother Culture™ stresses the importance of cultivating your own soul and mind with the express purpose of having something good, true and beautiful to offer those in your care.

Homemaker Culture, as I have experienced it over the past 30+ years, involves claiming small windows of time amidst our busy days to cultivate a rich reading life, religious life, artful life and creative life. This episode will focus on the creative life, with some practical suggestions to help you begin to pursue Homemaker Culture.
