20 Oct 2024Sylvester Williams was a First Round draft choice and won a Super Bowl in his first few years in the NFL. But, there’s so much more to the man they call “Sly”01:07:58

He was a first round draft pick of the Denver Broncos. He went to the Super Bowl as a rookie and played with guys like Peyton Manning and Von Miller. But the Broncos lost that game, and it was humbling for Sylvester Williams. Two years later, the Broncos won Super Bowl 50.
Not bad for a guy who only started ONE high school football game, after which he was a walk-on at Coffeyyville Community College, then transferred to North Carolina and was named All-ACC and then an All-American as senior.
That seemed to be the way things go for Sylvester Williams (known as "Sly"). He has spent most of his life overcoming long odds to enjoy success through hard work and perseverance. After all, one doesn't live like a champion by taking short cuts.
This is an amazing story of a life that could have easily gone in the wrong direction, but didn't and because of his personal make-up, couldn't.

14 Apr 2024One of the greatest Play by Play voices of All Time, Thom Brennaman calls on The Approach Shot00:51:33

There are only a handful of play by play voices that rise to the very top of their profession; Vin Scully, Jack Buck, Joe Buck, Marty Brennaman, Jon Miller, Vern Lundquist, Pat Summerall, and Jim Nantz. Our guest on this week's episode of The Approach Shot is in that group; Thom Brennman.

From broadcasting Cubs games opposite Harry Carey to NFL Games for Fox while always remembering his roots in Cincinnati, Brennaman is (simply put) one of the All-Time greats.

In August of 2020, Brennaman was fired from Fox when we was caught on a hot mic making an unfortunate anti-gay slur (which we do not condone) and immediately apologized, and has spent time since the incident consistently apologizing and insisting "that's not who he is", which many folks, including those in the LGBTQ+ community agree with.

We spend much of this episode celebrating his great career, and while we don't usually get into the controversial, Thom spends time discussing the incident, as well.

It's a very rewarding and intriguing episode of The Approach Shot.

08 Dec 2024All Star AND All Pro? Yep! 2 sport star BRIAN JORDAN talks baseball, football and GOLF! So, maybe he's really a 3 sport star!00:58:41

He loves golf almost as much as he loves hitting a WR across the middle. His love for Missouri is only matched by his love for his adopted home- Atlanta. An All Star for the St. Louis Cardinals and a Pro Bowl (alternate) for the Atlanta Falcons, Brian Jordan's excellence didn't care which sport he played (though he admits to loving the contact of hitting a wide receiver over the middle more than hitting a home run).

These days his love for Atlanta extends to his Brian Jordan Foundation which provides scholarships for deserving students.

And when he talks about his annual Brian Jordan Celebrity Golf Tournament, his pride lit up the room.
BRIAN JORDAN is our guest on this fun-filled episode of The Approach Shot

26 May 2024It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a SUPER MAN! Super Bowl Champion Derek Kennard is in the clubhouse!00:33:40

Part One of our conversation with DEREK KENNARD includes the emotions he went through as a first year Dallas Cowboys and the expectations that ended abruptly in the NFC Championship games against the 49ers, and then the redemption he felt when the Cowboys went back to the Super Bowl and won. He also talks about playing in the Super Bowl with a severely separated shoulder. This is one tough hombre!
DEREK KENNARD is our guest on this episode of The Approach Shot.

04 Jun 2024Author and Columnist for the Baltimore Sun, JOHN EISENBERG brings decades of stories to The Approach Shot00:27:41

This is Part Two of our conversation with longtime columnist and author JOHN EISENBERG. We talk about his golf game, and he faces (and aces) the dreaded SIX PACK!
We talk about his new book, "Rocket Men", which offers an inside look at the Black quarterbacks whose skill and grit transformed the NFL; and some of his other books including "The League", which focuses on the pioneering sportsmen who kept the league alive in the 1920s, 1930s, and 1940s, when its challenges were many and its survival was not guaranteed; and "The Streak" the book dedicated to Cal Ripken pursuit and eventually takeover of Lou Gehrig's Iron Man record. This is a great listen from a terrific storyteller.

06 Oct 2024"Professional hitter" Pete LaCock tells stories of MLB, his rivalry with Bob Gibson and his famous family on this episode of The Approach Shot00:54:53

To a baseball purist, Pete LaCock was a dangerous hitter. His eye, his plate discpline and his ability to come through in the clutch allowed him to have a terrific 9 year MLB career before playing in Japan. But it's his love for the game, his rivalry with Hall of Famer Bob Gibson, and his famous family (and their friends) that make this such an endearing conversation with a great storyteller.

If you're a Cubs fan, Royals fan, fan of Hollywood Squares, My Three Sons, The Dick Van Dyke Show or just of great stories, this episode is a must listen with Pete LaCock. (listen closely and you can hear his wife "helping" Pete with his stories. We got a 2-1!!)

14 Jul 2024A 13 MLB veteran and a member of the Canadian baseball Hall of Fame, eh? ROB DUCEY is our guest on The Approach Shot01:01:43

When you think of 13 year MLB veteran, you don't think of a ton of home runs. Nor do you think of a bucket of stolen bases. But as a left handed contact hitter, who hit well and was a great defensive player, Rob carved out a terrific career that got him inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame.
These days, he plays a lot of golf and is involved with the company that makes and sells the Core Energy Belt, which is being used by both baseball players and golfers alike. Rob talks about baseball, golf and the growth of Core Energy in Japan and here in the US on this episode of The Approach Shot.

28 Jul 2024Actor, Athlete and adventurer BRIAN KURLANDER’s new role- our guest on The Approach Shot00:59:23

He has acted with Morgan Freeman, Reese Witherspoon and so many of the greats. He has appeared on countless TV shows including Cobra Kai. But it’s the man, the adventurer and of course, the golfer that had us so fascinated.
It’s our pleasure to talk with BRIAN KURLANDER on this week’s episode of The Approach Shot.
SPOILER ALERT- John and Brian get into a Shakespeare monologue challenge that can’t be missed!

15 Dec 2024BACHELOR NATION- He's one of the faces of the franchise- BEN HIGGINS talks "The Bachelor", friendships within "Bachelor Nation" and of course, his love for golf01:01:38

Dashing and Handsome? CHECK!
Sharp witted? HECK YEAH!
A great friend to Wells Adams and Joey Graziadei? YOU GOT THAT RIGHT!
Happily married? UH HUH.
Golf nut? YOU BETTER BELIEVE IT!

BEN HIGGINS is all of those things plus an amazing business man who runs a coffee business whose proceeds helps other non profits around the world. He's also a hilarious and great guest and we have him on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.

This is a must listen for BACHELOR NATION and even non fans of The Bachelor (gasp!)

01 Dec 2024We get a KICK out of our conversation with long time MINNESOTA VIKINGS punter and broadcaster Greg "Coffin Corner" Coleman on this episode of The Approach Shot01:10:55

A 12 year veteran of the NFL? CHECK!
A member of the fan-chosen 40th anniversary Vikings team? YEP!
A member of the Florida A & M Football HOF? YOU BETCHA
A member of the State of Florida Track and Field Hall of Fame? MMM HMMM
The first exclusively black punter in NFL History? YES SIR

But none of those things define Greg Coleman. His smooth, witty, selfless personality does, though. Having accomplished so much, he is heavily invested in giving back, in staying involved and making sure that people that he touches understand that he is all about helping build character, developing skills and enjoying life.

You'll truly enjoy this inspiring and fun episode of The Approach Shot.

05 May 20244x Pro Bowl Sack Master from the KC Chiefs, ART STILL takes over on this week's Part 1 of The Approach Shot00:40:05

What happens when you bring in one of the great personalities and story tellers to be your guest?
ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE!
Art Still takes over this episode of The Approach Shot with stories of football when a Defensive Player used to actually be able to hit a quarterback. He then talks of HIS fear of the little round white ball. And he makes John and Neal say "Still" 3 times...A LOT! (It feels a little like Beetlejuice around here). I'm telling you; we lost all control!
This is part one of the incredible fun discussion we had with ART STILL. (Part 2, which includes the six-pack comes out later this week).

23 Jun 2024MLB All Star closer TREVOR ROSENTHAL throws some heat on this week's episode of The Approach Shot00:59:34

Batters did not want to see him on the mound. Fans loved his heat! One of the very first to throw 100 mph, he had tremendous success in the majors, when healthy. He is one of only SEVEN pitchers in Major League Baseball HISTORY to ever have back-to-back 45 save seasons (not even the great Mariano Rivera did that).
His golf game may not be All Star caliber, but he sure tells great stories of baseball, golf and coming back from injuries. TREVOR ROSENTHAL takes the mound on this week's terrific episode of The Approach Shot.

14 Jan 2024Donny Most, more than Ralph from "Happy Days", he sings, he acts and he golfs!00:39:03

"Happy Days" are here, as Don (Donny) Most, is our guest this week on The Approach Shot. We talk "Happy Days" with Donny (who played Ralph Malph) and his continuing friendships with cast members Henry Winkler, Ron Howard, Anson Williams and Marion Ross. We also talk with Don about his "second" career; singing and his top 10 charting single "New York High", his love of golf and we grill Don with our 6 pack of questions. It's a fun-filled episode with some great storytelling and a lot of laughs.

02 Mar 2025He's a 2x All Star, 2x Silver Slugger, a Gold Glove winner and a member of the Red Sox Hall of Fame; Ellis Burks swings by with baseball and golf knowledge on The Approach Shot01:08:04

He's been called a "manager's dream".
Johnny Damon once said of him "Just to be his teammate is something I will always remember."

ELLIS BURKS is a great story teller with so much wisdom to share, which he does with humor, charm and grace.

You're going to want to hear the story of the year that he and the Red Sox broke the curse and how it effected him personally. Not to mention how EB handles the 6 pack! (Here's a hint- he aced it!)

Red Sox Nation, Rockies fans, you gotta listen to this episode!

02 Feb 2025Brewers and Dodgers pitcher Jimmy Nelson shares his success and his frustrations with injury on a very real episode of The Approach Shot01:01:03

He describes himself as a "science project", an athlete with all of the tools and the success that goes with it, but the injuries that kept him from "next level" success.

JIMMY NELSON, the starting pitcher for the Milwaukee Brewers who finished 9th in the Cy Young voting in 2017, the same pitcher who pitched 177, 179 and 175 innings respectively in 2015, 16 and 17 battled injuries his entire career. He then reinvented himself as a reliever for the LA Dodgers with 44 strikeouts in 29 innings in 2021.

He pitched for 10 years in the majors, but had 6 surgeries and rehabbed for 7 years.
He shares the pains, the ups and downs and how the journey created the mental toughness needed to get through it all, on this episode of The Approach Shot.

23 Feb 2025He’s the definition of a ballhawk- VENCIE GLENN takes it to the house on The Approach Shot01:06:12

Vencie Glenn, the man picked John Elway off and ran back the INT 103 yards, which was an NFL record that stood for 18 years, has so many great stories and shared many of them with us. Vencie’s 35 career TD’s made him a prolific ballhawk but we didn’t realize he’d also intercept the 6 pack!!

This is an incredibly entertaining episode of The Approach Shot.

17 Nov 2024Gonzo Gates, GH and Golf- Gregory Harrison, one of the greatest actors of our generation graces our stage on this episode of The Approach Shot01:18:02

People ask why we love doing The Approach Shot and talking with actors, athletes, authors and others about their lives and their golf games.

It's episodes like this, where we talk with one of the most humble and real celebrities you'll ever meet, Gregory Harrison. He is just as excited to talk about his almost 50 year acting career as he is about his golf game.

Having just come off shooting a 75 the day before we talked with him, he shrugs and says, "if I had just chipped a little better, my score would have been better." Sound familiar?

Humble, handsome and hilarious, our conversation with Gregory Harrison is a must listen.

20 Aug 2024Minnesota Vikings punter GREG COLEMAN, World Series Champion and Olympic gold medal winner DOUG MIENTKIEWICZ and Sports Talk 610 KILT Houston's PATRICK CREIGHTON are our guests on SHOOTIN' BULL01:17:35

We call Shootin' Bull THE celebrity sports talk roundtable program show, and want it to feel like we're all just listening in on guys Shootin' Bull about sports.

Enjoy!

12 Jan 202513 year MLB pitcher SCOTT FELDMAN talks baseball and golf on our first new episode of 202500:56:39

It’s 2025!  Our first new episode in the New Year is one of our favorites!  Long time MLB pitcher Scott Feldman, who pitched in the majors for 13 years is our guest and together we wish everyone “Shalomha”!  As the only Hawaiian-born Jewish player to ever play in the big leagues, interestingly Shalom and Aloha both mean “hello”, “goodbye” and “peace” in their respective tongues.  So why not start the New Year with a new word?  It’s just part of the fun we had with Felds talking baseball and golf!

If you’ve ever wondered how to stay feeling youthful as you age, lose stubborn fat, and improve your sleep,, this conversation is packed with life changing insights.

Jay and Dr. Wright start by debunking the myth that aging is an inevitable decline. Dr. Wright explains how lifestyle choices in your 20s and 30s directly impact how you feel in your 40s, 50s, and beyond. They dive into how excess fat, especially around the belly, isn’t just about appearance—it’s a sign of inflammation that accelerates aging. Dr. Wright shares how movement, muscle mass, and diet play a crucial role in fat loss and energy levels.

They also explore the powerful body-brain connection. Dr. Wright breaks down how physical activity releases key proteins that protect the brain from cognitive decline and diseases like dementia. Jay and Dr. Wright discuss how poor sleep can sabotage fat loss, slow down recovery, and disrupt hormones—leading to more cravings, weight gain, and reduced longevity.

In this interview, you'll learn:

How fat storage impacts aging and energy levels.

The critical role of sleep in weight loss and brain function.

How movement and muscle mass keep you youthful.

How lifestyle choices in your 30s affect long-term health.

02 Jun 2024Sports, sports and more sports; Columnist and Author JOHN EISENBERG, brings his unique perspective to The Approach Shot00:37:11

As a kid, I dreamt of going to the biggest sporting events; Super Bowls and World Series games, NBA Finals and the Masters. It all seemed to glamorous and historic. We talk with long time BALTIMORE SUN columnist JOHN EISENBERG about how lucky he was to have covered them all. But he also points out that for columnists, who have to write SOMETHING every day, it's a job, and not an easy one.

After almost 30 years with the Sun, John evolved into an amazing author of books like "Rocket Men", "The League" and others. We'll talk about that in Part 2 of our conversation, which comes out later this week.

15 May 2024Scott Hamilton faces the dreaded six pack, in Part 2 of our discussion with men's figure skating GOAT00:32:41

If you enjoyed Part One of our conversation with Men's figure skating legend Scott Hamilton, you'll LOVE Part 2. Scott gets very personal about his Mom, his uplifting attitude toward life, meeting the love of his life and moving to Tennessee. This episode includes our six pack, which Scott aces! Mostly, this episode will make you feel good. Enjoy!

23 Mar 2025One of our favorite episodes ever- LOFA TATUPU brings the passion and the charm to this episode of The Approach Shot01:05:03

Yes, he is a three time Pro Bowler with the Seattle Seahawks. Yes he is a two time national champion with the Trojans of USC. But where did the fire and passion come from? LOFA TATUPU credits his family and talks with love and reverence about his dad LOFI TATUPU (who was a star in the NFL with the New an England Patriots). So yes Lofa brings the fire but there’s a soft spot there and you’ll enjoy it all on this episode of The Approach Shot.

11 Mar 2024MLB All Star Justin Masterson sinks in and does some great storytelling01:02:25

One of the most intriguing careers we have had the pleasure to discuss, All Star pitcher Justin Masterson joins us on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.  We marvel at the fact that Justin had not one, not two but FOUR historic events linked to his career.  By historic, we mean his name is in the record books!  (SPOILER ALERT- one of those accomplishments was that he became only the third pitcher in MLB History to defeat BOTH of the previous year's Cy Young Award winners in the same season.  As if that wasn't enough, Justin actually became the first EVER to do it in his first two starts of the season.)  You'll have to listen for the other historic events.  Justin also talks, with humor about his golf game, and about helping people, which has always been his passion.  Great episode with a great guest!

04 Feb 2024An All Star on the field and in the studio- MLB and MLB Network's DAN PLESAC joins The Approach Shot00:59:33

He came from the golf course, literally, to talk baseball, how tough it is to say "goodbye" to a game you loved for the 18 years you played and then how fortunate to be an analyst on MLB Network's "MLB Tonight".

But Dan Plesac didn't stop there!  He told us which player he would build a team around, shared stories of growing up in Gary, Indiana and which MLB team he thought would be this year's "Sleeper".

Then we got to talking about golf and Dan has a lot to say about the "other" game with the little white ball.  Dan is a great storyteller and our time with him flew by!

19 May 2024Tortillas and Texas; Power pitching and Padres- Part One with MLB's MIKE ADAMS00:42:27

When you grow up in the Coastal Bend, it's not an easy path to the Majors. But MIKE ADAMS, with help from a determined father, his grandma's amazing homemade tortillas and natural athletic ability had a 10 year MLB career. Having pitched for the Brewers, Padres, Rangers and Phillies, Mike pitched to an incredible 2.48 lifetime ERA and an even more amazing 1.085 lifetime WHIP. He struck out 408 batters in his career while only walking 126. He also won a World Series game against the Cardinals. Now that's a pitcher with incredible control. But does he control the little white ball the same way? Is a man who spent his life putting the ball exactly where he wants it in MLB capable of doing the same on the golf course? Find out in Part One of our conversation with MLB's MIKE ADAMS on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.

28 Apr 2024Carolina Panthers' great JONATHAN STEWART stops running long enough to hang out with us on The Approach Shot00:59:27

We talk with Carolina Panthers' great JONATHAN STEWART this week about why he chose Oregon, when the biggest schools were chasing him, all the way to his Pro Bowl selection and playing in the Super Bowl. Then we turn to Jonathan's golf game and how his competitive spirit continues chasing the little white ball.

A man of great faith, Jonathan gives us one of the funniest answers ever in the 6 pack when sked who is the king of the Stewart castle- he or his incredibly successful wife, Natalie.

This is a great listen!

07 Apr 2024From Super Bowl to Emmy Awards, Solomon Wilcots is the King of this week's episode of The Approach Shot01:09:50

AFC Champion with the Cincinnati Bengals? Check.
CBS color commentator? Check
Emmy Award winning sideline reporter with Sunday Night Football? Check.
Passionate golfer? Check.
Great storyteller? You betcha!
Solomon Wilcots is the total package, whether on or off the field, and he is also a terrific story teller. He also handles the 6 pack with ease and humor. This episode doesn't feel like an interview, it feels like a chat with an old friend. Enjoy!

21 May 2024Tortillas and Texas; Power pitching and Padres. Part TWO with MLB's Mike Adams00:29:57

Part Two with MLB reliever Mike Adams. Mike's face (and voice) lights up when talking about his grandma's homemade tortillas and even when she ages and is barely able to make them, she somehow manages to. Grandma even sends her tortillas as a care package when Mike is on the road, which he shares with his teammates.
We then talk about the first annual Orlando Adams Memorial Golf Tournament, in memory of Mike's Dad. Some of the proceeds from the tournament will go toward establishing a scholarship for a deserving high school senior in Sinton TX. For information, email vfwpost2160@gmail.com or call Todd at 361-207-4377.

27 Oct 2024Houston's favorite son Nate "The Great" Griffin from Fox 26 TV talks Houston (and all) sports, favorite condiments (!!) and of course golf!01:06:14

When you turn on Fox 26's Morning show, you will see our buddy Nate Griffin, but doing what? Who knows? He is the sportscaster for the show, but has also been the general assignments reporter. That means he could be talking with politicians, city officials, sports stars or business owners. So he is a man of the people and you can tell listening to him, that he loves what he does.
He's also done color commentary for Rice Football for decades, and is just one of those lucky people that has love for his city, and is loved by his city.
And boy, does he love this golf (and sadly, mayonnaise).
So come take a trip to Houston with us and talk to one of the city's favorite sons.
Nate "The Great" Griffin is insightful, smooth and hilarious and we are delighted that he stopped by to share his tales with us on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.

31 Mar 2024NFL Draft guru JOE DELEONE gives us his picks and picks his best golf stories01:02:31

JOE DELEONE joins us this week and we geek out a bit, talking about NFL free agency, how that will effect the draft and then the draft itself. Joe is incredibly insightful about everything he does, whether it's being a long snapper at the University of Rhode Island, podcasting or knowing the ins and outs of College Football. All of this makes him one of the country's most sought after minds regarding the NFL Draft. His discipline and attention to detail crosses over into golf, but is he satisfied with his golf game? What do you think? It's an incredibly fun and informative episode of The Approach Shot.

09 Feb 2025New England Patriots WR CHRIS HOGAN talks Brady, Belichick and overcoming the odds to become a multi-time Super Bowl champion01:04:31

What was it like in the New England Patriots' locker room at halftime of Super Bowl 51, with the Pats losing 21-3, and having played their worst of half of football all season?

What could possibly have been said to motivate them to overcome a 25 point deficit and make the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history, defeating the Atlanta Falcons in overtime 34-28?

You may be surprised, and CHRIS HOGAN, one of the Pats' wide receivers tells that story; his personal stories of grit, determination and how every NO was turned into "eye opening experiences".

So much to hear from CHRIS HOGAN on this episode of The Approach Shot.

16 Mar 2025He loves golf, his NFL brethren, his Notre Dame family and you can "catch" Michael Floyd on this episode of The Approach Shot01:01:45

Michael Floyd is just a regular guy. He golfs, works in real estate in Greater Minneapolis (where he spent some time during his previous occupation; as wide receiver in the NFL.)

OK, so he's no regular real estate agent. He set records for total catches, touchdowns and receiving yards at Notre Dame, and is one of the greatest receivers in Cardinals history. But, he'll still sell you a house!

His passion comes through whether you're talking about his family, his time in the NFL or about golf. Definitely when he talks about golf!

Michael exudes joy and energy and brings it in droves to this episode of The Approach Shot.

21 Apr 2024Former UCLA Bruin and International Basketball star Travis Reed talks hoops and golf01:01:53

UCLA Basketball star Travis Reed has made some tough decisions in his life including deciding to play overseas instead of the NBA. Of course, a lot of those decisions worked out well for the 6'8" power forward as he became the league MVP in Holland and the Baltic League Player of the Year.

These days, Travis talks about hoops and stays true to his roots as he can be heard on the "Bleav in UCLA" podcast, and on his "An Athlete's Journey" show on You Tube. There he can be seen interviewing "California Legends" that he has known throughout HIS journey.

Travis' love for and frustration with golf is something we can all relate to, even without being a hoops legend.

16 Jun 2024Comedian Bil Benden makes a joke out of this week's episode of The Approach Shot00:50:01

Now imagine 50+ minutes of that in one episode of The Approach Shot. If you enjoy good comedy, and good storytelling, this is the episode for you!

25 Feb 2024Kansas City Chiefs' Louie Aguiar was his own punt, pass and kick competiton01:00:09

OK, Chiefs Kingdom, this one is definitely for you.  LOUIE AGUIAR, the second team ALL-PRO punted in the NFL for 10 seasons; five with the Chiefs (including his All-Pro season).  But he will always be a Chief, through and through.

Despite being a punter, Louie could throw the ball farther than many quarterbacks (which proved in 1997 against Seattle), he could place kick, and he loved to tackle!  If he doesn't sound like your ordinary punter, that's because he wasn't.  Oh, and he's also a great storyteller.

Enjoy one of our favorite characters, Louie Aguiar on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.

29 Dec 2024Ernie Witt- you know, he’s a pretty big deal in Canada00:57:54

If you vacation in Canada and want to have people buy you a Molson, mention Ernie Whitt's name. He is practically royalty in Canada, a member of the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and a beloved All Star catcher for the Toronto Blue Jays.
In fact, he was the last "original" member of the Jays, having been drafted by the Red Sox, but the Blue Jays took him in the expansion draft, as he was the anchor of the team for a decade. His power at the plate and his defensive prowess behind the plate made him one of MLB's great players from 1975-1991.
And man, does he love talking golf!

12 May 2024Part One of our discussion with the GOAT of men's figure skating, Scott Hamilton is pure GOLD!00:49:08

As if being men's figure skating's GOAT wasn't enough, we learned that Scott Hamilton is engaging, funny, driven, uplifting and so much more. His time on the ice certainly doesn't define this man who has had multiple brain cancer diagnoses, voluntarily had brain surgery, and who does so much for the cancer community; neither does cancer define him.
What makes Scott Hamilton such a joy is his tirelessly upbeat personality. He says "Every time something bad happened, I realized something good came from it".
This is an inspiring, entertaining and uplifting episode of The Approach Shot, and one we are very proud to bring to you. (in two parts).

A Major League Baseball All Star for the Milwaukee Brewers, this week's guest LARY SORENSEN is one of those guys whose life is made up of amazing stories. His self deprecating humor is charming and he never acts like a guy who made the climb to being a Major League All Star. Talk about ups and downs in life, Lary has experiences them all and is more than happy to open the book that is his life on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.

18 Aug 2024Tampa Bay Buccaneers' 10 year vet and author Randy Grimes shares his very personal story of being "Off Center" on this week's episode of The Approach Shot00:59:37

Get ready for a heart breaking, jaw dropping, but equally uplifting episode of The Approach Shot with Tampa Bay Buccaneers center Randy Grimes.
Randy tells his very personal story of being addicted to opioids, mostly so he wouldn't lose his spot on the roster. Not wanting to be "the guy who is always in the trainer's room or on the injured list" Randy did whatever it took to stay in the line-up. That included getting hooked on painkillers until the end of his career. For years after, he felt the effects, and his story is both eye opening and uplifting.
Randy's book "Off Center" tells the whole story but he shares a lot with us on this episode of The Approach Shot.

22 Dec 2024Fiery and competitive, that's what made Wally Backman a World Series champion and he is our guest on this episode of The Approach Shot01:03:07

What a way to wrap up 2024! Nothing like having a conversation with a member of the 1986 Miracle Mets and a WORLD SERIES CHAMPION.
WALLY BACKMAN is our guest on this episode of The Approach Shot and yes, he was part of the team that broke the Red Sox faithful's hearts. He too, watched Mookie Wilson's ball go under Bill Buckner's glove, but has a different perspective on that play and others.
He also gave back so much to the game he loves by managing in the Minor Leagues and was able to impart wisdom and fire in his players. That love and fire also exist in his golf game and we enjoyed every second of our conversation with WALLY BACKMAN!
Have a listen!

05 Jan 20253 sport star BRIAN JORDAN talks baseball, football and GOLF! All Pro in the NFL, All Star in MLB, so how's his golf game?00:58:41

11 Aug 2024Tired of boring podcasts? We have LeCure. MLB pitcher SAM LECURE that is!01:01:01

A 6 year veteran of Major League Baseball, turned pre and post game host for the Cincinnati Reds on Bally Sports, Sam LeCure certainly has the resume to be a strong guest on The Approach Shot. What we didn't know is that he is also funny, has some hilarious, but also heart breaking stories of his time in MLB and by the end of the show, you'll feel like you made a new friend. We certainly felt that way.
Have a listen; this is a great episode.

28 May 2024Part Two with Derek Kennard- Golf, Cigars and the 6 pack!00:28:36

In Part One with Derek Kennard, we talked about Super Bowls, his playing with a severely separated shoulder during the Cowboys Super Bowl win and how he had to be tough to deal with the emotions of winning and losing.
Part Two is a slightly softer side. Derek talks about his very personal battle with sleep apnea and how difficult is was to find a proper treatment. He then became a champion for others who are having to deal with this issue. Don't worry, it's not all softer; Derek dominates the 6 pack too!

30 Mar 2025Is this heaven? No, It's The Approach Shot.. with former MLB closer DREW STOREN, who's also the owner of FIELD OF DREAMS WHISKEY00:55:38

His dad, Mark Patrick (Storen) is a celebrity in Indianapolis (and nationally) for his work on television and the syndicated Bob & Tom radio show. He is also, related to one of the great sportscasters ever; Hannah Storm.
But DREW STOREN made his own way by being a virtually unhittable pitcher in high school and at Stanford before pitching in the Majors. In his second year in the big leagues, Storen became the closer for the upstart Washington Nationals and saved 43 games. His love for the game and his 13 year major league career eventually drove him to the fields where dreams are made- in Iowa.
There, with his partners, he now bottles whiskey and bourbon (whiskey) with the iconic "Field of Dreams" brand. How does a kid from Indiana go from pitcher to businessman with THAT brand?
You'll just have to listen and find out.

16 Feb 2025One of the great baseball minds, and now a published (soon to be best selling) author, Clint Hurdle covers his 45 years in baseball in one hour on this episode of The Approach Shot00:54:38

Named Sporting News Manager of the Year with the Pirates, CLINT HURDLE took a team, its loyal Pittsburgh fan base and energized them enough to make the playoffs. This is a team that struggled for almost two decades.

You start as a manager in the Mets organization and work, and work, and work your way up through the minors until you catch on with Colorado and their hitting coach. The rest, including the fire, the passion and the love for the game, is well documented.

Now, his quips, daily motivational thoughts and his wisdom are captured in his new book HURDLE-ISMS, which is now on sale. And we have the joy of talking about it all on this episode of The Approach Shot.

06 Apr 20252024 NFL Hall of Fame inductee DWIGHT FREENEY brings his spin move and golf stories to this episode of The Approach Shot01:09:51

We have been fortunate to have multiple NFL all Pros as our guest on the show. We have had many MLB All Stars too. But in 170 shows, we have only had ONE Hall of Famer as our guest and that was PGA
Hall of Famer Tony Jacklin.

So it is our honor to welcome DWIGHT FREENEY to the show.

Dwight is a great storyteller, is an incredible student of the game and has a terrific sense of humor. Especially about his golf game.

This episode is a must listen!

10 Nov 2024Ernie Whitt- MLB's Canadian Hero from Detroit00:57:54

Ernie Whitt is our guest on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.

24 Nov 2024Pro Football Guru Russell Baxter talks ESPN, the NFL season and makes some early post season predictions01:09:10

There's a reason he's called the Pro Football Guru- two dozen years at ESPN working with Chris (Boomer) Berman, Tom Jackson and the crew gave him the home at which he could use his remarkable research skills. Working with CBS' Thursday Night Football, CBS sports Radio, NFL Network, Fan Sided and so many more honed his incredible skills.

But he's not just football.

He loves his golf and loves his family and we get to talk about all of that and more. RUSSELL BAXTER is a great talent, a great man and a great friend and he's our guest on this week's episode of The Approach Shot.

25 Jul 2024Golf and Gospel's Geremy Davis spreads the word, talks golf and the NFL00:56:20

Don't get the wrong idea. The Approach Shot has turned into a religious show. But when Golf and Gospel's Geremy Davis (former collegiate and NFL football player) drops by to talk about his You Tube series "Golf and Gospel" we get into a bunch of intriguing topics; food, football, music, and yes, golf and gospel.

Geremy has a great sense of humor and just because he is a "believer" doesn't mean he gets a break on the dreaded 6 pack. (also, one of my favorite questions ever- have you ever had your dreads hit you in the face when golfing? Spoiler alert- the answer is YES.)

This is an entertaining and intriguing episode!

This week on The Approach Shot we welcome in Walt Thurmond, former member of Seattle’s “Legion Of Boom” and proud owner of a Super Bowl Ring. We talk a little football but now that he has retired, Walt is seriously pursuing golf as both a recreation and a method of out reach.
