26 Sep 2022How to Find Strength in the Holy Spirit with Max Lucado00:42:11

I have a question for you, friend. Do you ever feel like you’re drowning in questions you can't answer and problems you can't solve? Today on the show, I welcome back pastor and author Max Lucado for a conversation about how we can learn to lean into the life-saving strength of the Holy Spirit.

In this conversation, Max and I speak candidly about who the Spirit is, how he can empower us to be more joyful, and the ways we can overcome anything when we draw closer to God.

Max encourages us that while the chaos of our lives often feels like too much to take on by ourselves, there is no more need to feel as if we are walking this path alone. There’s also no more carrying weight we were not intended to bear. We can rest easy knowing that help Is here.

Trust me when I say this is another conversation you don’t want to miss!

Max Lucado is a pastor, speaker, and bestselling author who, in his own words, “writes books for people who don’t read books.” He serves the people of Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, and his message is for the hurting, the guilty, the lonely, and the discouraged: God loves you; let him.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • How Max has found strength and purpose through understanding the Holy Spirit.
  • The ways the Holy Spirit can impact our daily fears and anxieties, not just milestone moments in our lives..
  • Why God gave us an advocate in the Holy Spirit and how we can use Him as an everyday guide.

Favorite quotes:

~Jesus described the Holy Spirit as our helper and our counselor and that’s when it dawned on me that that’s who has been helping me lately and that opened my mind with a deep appreciation and a better understanding of the Holy Spirit.

~Any voice I hear has to submit to scripture.

~The Spirit is always going to be kinder to you than you are to yourself.

~The Holy Spirit is the seal of the saint. He seals us for eternity which means that though I may not know much about what’s going to happen, one thing that I don’t have to question is where I will spend eternity.

~The Holy Spirit is our advocate. He knows exactly how to pray and he takes the groans of our heart and turns them into prayers worthy of heaven.

In this episode I answered this question:

  1. You seem as if you always have it all together. Do you ever get stressed out and can’t think? How do you stop doing that? (35:09)

23 Nov 2020Healthy relationships with sugar and Social Media with Wendy Speake00:53:32

Hey Friends! Joining me on the show today is author Wendy Speake, who is passionate about pointing others to Christ through the power of storytelling. She’s written many wonderful books on how we can help take back our lives from things that have power over us.

So it’s safe to say we covered a lot of ground in our conversation, including how setting healthy boundaries with both sugar and social media can lead us to a deeper connection with God and how the stress of 2020 has impacted mothers especially.

Plus, I’m sharing my best advice for handling overwhelm this season and the seemingly endless stream of information and opinions we’ve been bombarded with over the past few months.

Things we discussed:

1. How staying connected online can keep us distant from the ones who matter most

2. How triggering situations affect relationships and lines of communication between moms and their kids

3. How social media can act as a crutch to ignore our relationship with God

Favorite quotes:

1. God never asked us for a sugar sacrifice. He asked us for a living sacrifice. So we lay down sugar in order to feast on Him like we’re fasting but the whole goal is feasting. We’re taking a break from what we usually shove in our mouths, in our lives to say I want to consume you Lord.

2. The fast is so much more than a detox because we are lifting our eyes to see Christ, to see our people and then to see others.

3. If your device is your vice, if your device is divisive. It is separating you from God and others in real life. Take those details to the Lord.

4. It’s possible that when we turn to our pantries and our freezers to get us through our stress, that is actually causing us more stress.

In this episode I answer this question:

How do you not let information overwhelm you? (49:17)

Great things we discussed:

1. Wendy Speake (Website and Facebook) 2. 40 Day Social Media Fast

3. Behold Him 4. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air 5. The God Dare 6. Muscle milk chocolate powder

7. Mrs. Doubtfire

8. First Love

9. The 2020 Christmas Gift Guide

22 Apr 2024Navigating Faith Through Uncertain Times with Sarah Bessey00:48:27

This episode shares a great conversation with one of my favorite writers in the whole world, Sarah Bessey. Today, we are diving into an important topic that I don't think gets covered enough: what do you do when you feel like you're in the wilderness of your faith. If you're struggling with doubts about your faith, or supporting someone who is, you're not alone. Sarah's wisdom, empathy, and thoughtfulness are going to be a blessing to you like it has been to me.

Sarah Bessey has authored or edited five books, including the New York Times bestseller A Rhythm of Prayer. She also leads Evolving Faith, a conference and online community for people who are reimagining their faith with hope. In her new book, Field Notes for the Wilderness: Practices for an Evolving Faith, Sarah becomes a shepherd for our curiosity, giving us a table for our questions, tools to cultivate what we crave, and a blessing for what was, even as we leave it behind.

Join Sarah and I as we talk about:

  • Examining our faith

  • What it means to be in a season of reimagining our faith

  • When you are going through a season in the wilderness

  • Healing through hard hurtful situations

  • Learning what you are for and how to love the world

Favorite quotes:

  • “You can’t wander away from God’s love. You can get a few things wrong and still enjoy the goodness and friendship of God. This is not a thing that is jeopardy.” (18:15)

  • “In the midst of all of that, you can’t outwander God and you can’t run away from the run of God. That is still the thing that is holding everything including the wilderness inside you.” (20:56)

  • “It is not enough to just be against things. I need to begin to name what I am for.” (21:52)

  • “One of the other ones that was really important for me was learning how to love the world again.” (23:04)

  • “God is hiding in plain sight in our everyday walking around lives.” (24:00)

Coaching this week:   Cultivate Self-Awareness This week in coaching, I discussed how Self-awareness means paying attention to our feelings and reactions, especially in stressful situations. By noticing where we feel tension in our bodies and understanding our wants and needs, we can learn to respond to challenges with more wisdom and grace instead of numbing out and leading ourselves to burnout.

09 Jan 2023How We Relate to God, Ourselves, and Others with Jesse Eubanks00:36:25

Welcome back, friends!

I can’t wait for you to listen to today’s conversation with Enneagram coach and podcast host Jesse Eubanks as we discuss his soon-to-released book, How We Relate: Understanding God, Yourself, and Others through the Enneagram.

Ok, so I’m going to come right out and say it… It’s very intriguing to consider the Enneagram alongside our relationship with God, isn’t it?!

Jesse and I discuss so much in this one, including ways to experience more meaningful relationships with God, others, and ourselves. The value of understanding how we approach our relationships is the same way we approach our relationship with God as well.

Jesse Eubanks is a certified Enneagram coach and host of The EnneaCast, a podcast exploring personality and relationships through the lens of the Enneagram. He is also the founder and executive director of Love Thy Neighborhood, an urban missions agency putting young adults on the front lines of nonprofit work. Jesse and his wife, Lindsay, have two children and live in Louisville, Kentucky.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • The nine essential desires and how one comes to the forefront in our lives.
  • Some of Jesse’s cardinal rules for using the Enneagram and why they are essential to consider.
  • The three vital underlying emotions that are harming us and their antidotes.

Favorite quotes:

~~“You can not have healthy relationships without self clarity. Self clarity is essential. It is essential for intimacy with other people, intimacy with God, and emotional flourishing. You need a tool to help you grow in your ability to see yourself from the outside and the Enneagram can serve you in that way. It will absolutely lead to deeper, more fulfilling relationships with God, other people, and yourself.”

~~“Our story that we have lived has a profound influence on who we are. We can’t understand our personality and our Enneagram type apart from understanding our life story.”

~~“The Enneagram as a tool can definitely be utilized to help us grow in our self awareness and have an understanding of what’s happening on our end of the relationships we have with other people.”

~~“It is really important to understand we are wielding something powerful when we look into the Enneagram and we suddenly have insights into other people. We have to approach that with a huge degree of humility, kindness, and empathy.”

This week’s coaching segment:

  1. A simple trick to make a new habit stick while giving yourself grace. (27:51)

30 Jan 2023How to Change the Way You Think with Megan Hyatt Miller00:42:42

Hey friend! Have you ever felt stuck, like you’re circling the same issue in your life over and over? Or maybe you have dreams that feel out of reach because you don’t know how to move forward?

If either of those applies to you, I’ve got some good news!

  1. Change is possible.
  2. There is a way forward.
  3. This episode will help you get there!

Listen in on this great conversation with my friend Megan Hyatt Miller who (literally) wrote the book on why our thoughts matter and how we can change them.

Megan and I don’t hold back on this conversation, friend! While it’s normal to struggle with limiting beliefs at times, we don’t have to get stuck there.

Tune in to learn more about:

  • What science says about how our brains are wired (and why this is good news for anyone who feels stuck!)
  • What happens when we feel uncomfortable (and what we can do about it!)
  • Why the stories we tell ourselves feel so true, even when they aren’t
  • One quick action step you can take today to change your mindset

Megan Hyatt Miller is the President & CEO of Michael Hyatt & Company, host of the popular business podcast Lead to Win, and author of the new book, Mind Your Mindset. Megan and her husband, Joel, have five children and live in Franklin, Tennessee.

Favorite quotes:

~“If we go upstream from our actions we can actually produce way better results then if we just double down on new and different actions without understanding what is driving those in the first place.”

~“Your brain can change. You actually can cut new pathways when you learn to leverage your thinking.”

~“We are not victims to the thoughts that come into our head and that is not the final word.”

~“We want to take the stories that are disempowering and we want to be intentional about rewriting those.”

~“You get a choice in what you believe about yourself, the world, and other people.”

29 Oct 2018Tyler Reagin on leadership, growth and using our influence well00:49:15

In this episode we discuss:

  1. What a life-giving leader looks like.
  2. How your influence is your leadership.
  3. What it looks like to build a lasting legacy of influence.

Favorite quotes:

  1. As followers of Jesus, that's a pretty clear thing, that we would follow and are connected to the source of life, which is Jesus the Holy Spirit. Is that overflowing to the people around us or are there things in our lives that are hindering the flow of life?
  2. What we do with our leadership is our influence.
  3. How you steward that influence is what matters. And for me the concept is, is it life-giving? Are you bringing life to people that you have been entrusted with to steward? If you don’t, guess what? You probably won’t grow; your influence will not grow.

In this episode I answer these questions:

  1. What can you do if your friends seem to be threatened by your goals and your dreams in life? (29:28)

  1.  Is it okay to ask God for clarity for things in my life? I heard a Bible teacher say that God gives us wisdom and we don’t need to ask for more clarity.  (34:43)

  1.  I need to have tough conversations with my employees that are under-performing. Do you have any advice? (37:21)

24 Apr 2023How to Know What God Wants For You with Heather MacFadyen00:48:47

What if I told you that shrinking back when you’re called to something big is not a display of humility? It is so ingrained in us, especially as women, to think of ourselves as less-than in an effort to be humble. But what if it’s actually pride that makes us play small?

This idea of understanding true humility was a big focus for me when I wrote Standing Strong, and I couldn’t wait to have a conversation with my friend Heather about it!

Heather MacFadyen is the one to talk about this with because she shares such good insight on this very thing in her new book, Right Where You Belong: How to Identify and Fully Occupy Your God-Given Space.

And we’re not holding back on this one! Join us as we talk about:

  • Four boundary lines that will help you identify the core of the assignments God has for you in this season

  • How to use those boundary lines as a decision-making tool

  • Ways to process rejection in a way that invites God into it

  • The impact of social media on mom guilt and shame, and why we need an inner circle

  • How to listen to God as an important first step in everything you do (and Heather’s example of what that process looks like for her!)

Each time Heather visits the show she brings truth and wisdom. You can listen to her last visit where where she shares about the dangers of comparison. Her relatable stories remind moms they are never alone in the pursuit of becoming the best mom they can be.

Heather MacFadyen is the host of the Don’t Mom Alone podcast, a speaker, and the author of two books, including her latest, Right Where You Belong: How to Identify and Fully Occupy Your God-Given Space.  Heather lives with her husband and their four sons in Dallas, TX.

Favorite quotes:

  • “You don’t have to hustle. You can trust that God is outside your space hustling on your behalf.”
  • “Nothing new is under the sun. It is just are we doing it. Are we inviting God into our decisions and are we looking for his invitations for what he is doing?”
  • “God speaks through the Holy Spirit in us and through His word and we can know if it is him if it resonates with the truth of who he has always been and what is written.”
  • “Your current living is what dictates your future moments so how are you spending that time.”
  • “When we experience God it ignites the Spirit in us and we can hear those promptings and invitations.”
  • “If you have never sat and listened to God’s voice, what he thinks about you, and what he is inviting you into, that would be a great first step.”

Coaching this week:

  1. Believing the best about our partners. (36:23)

03 Jan 2022How to Live a More Authentic Life with Hosanna Wong00:54:05

Happy New Year, friend! Thank you for being here and investing in yourselves.

Joining me today on the show is with the lovely Hosanna Wong. She is an international speaker, author, host on TBN’s “Better Together,” and spoken-word artist who grew up in an urban ministry on the streets of San Francisco.

Hosanna shares with us her story of growing up in San Francisco, and some of the lessons learned along the way. We also talk about living authentically and the right (and wrong) way to do evangelism, especially with your own family.

We also talk about:
  • Revisiting significant places in our histories, like Hosanna returning to San Francisco and some of the trauma she experienced there as a child.
  • How we can fight for the people that we love by stepping into their world and fighting for the relationship.
  • The importance of coaches and therapists in the lives of Christians, even though they already have Jesus.
  • How to make an impact with or without big, public (sometimes viral!) spiritual moments

I sincerely hope you are inspired from my conversation with Hosanna, feeling empowered to fight for your relationships and to live an authentic life this year.

Favorite quotes:

1. There are so many lies that the enemy tells us that we often believe that keep us from being who God has called us to be and doing what God had called us to do.

2. Fighting to be right is the perfect plan on how not to save the world. It’s the perfect plan how not to show God’s love to people.

3. If we want to reveal God’s real love to the people right next to us, many times our greatest witness will be our with-ness. How are we coming alongside people and being with them where they really are.

4. We are partnering with Him on His mission for everyone to know how loved they are.

5. When we overcomplicate it and believe the lie that we have to do something big to do something important, the enemy has victory in us ignoring the people right in front of us.

In this episode I answer this question:

1. How can I get over my fear of promoting myself? As a coach I know I need to promote but I feel self conscious about it. (45:16) Great things we discussed:

1. Hosanna Wong 2. How (Not) to Save the World: The Truth About Revealing God’s Love to the People Right Next to You

3. Believe For It 4.  The Office 5. Breaking Free from Body Shame: Dare to Reclaim What God Has Named Good

24 Jan 2022How to Uncomplicate Friendship with Andi Andrew00:44:18

Hey friends! For almost two years we’ve been doing what we can to navigate a global pandemic, lockdowns, and basically a new way of life. Our relationships with others have taken a dramatic hit because of this. We’ve had to make choices on what’s best for ourselves and our families, sometimes at the expense of our friendships. That’s why I’m so excited about today’s show as my friend, Andi Andrews joins me to talk all about friendships, how to maintain healthy friendships while practicing good boundaries.  Andi also shares about her book, Friendship: It’s Complicated. I loved her perspective on what it was like writing a book on friendship in the middle of a pandemic!

Andi Andrew is an author, speaker, as well as co-founder, and co-pastor with her husband, Paul, of Liberty Church, in New York City. In 2015, she launched the She Is Free Conference to equip and activate women to walk in freedom, spirit, soul, and body, and see others set free in their sphere of influence.

Listen in to learn more from Andi about:

  • What life has been like leading a church in the middle of a pandemic in New York City
  • The importance of being vulnerable with a few and authentic with many
  • How to determine if your friendships are healthy
  • The difference between self-preservation and good boundaries
  • How to reduce the drama in our friendships

Favorite quotes:

1. A wrestle really came for me when I got to a place where I got so defeated in my female relationships that I sat before God and I felt the Holy Spirit say to me “Andi you are the common denominator in every relationship you are in.”

2. You can have self control, you can’t control the outcome of anyone else's choices. You can’t stop them from doing what they’re doing but you can make decisions that change who you are so that you can become a better friend.

3. We need to learn to be vulnerable with the few and authentic with the many.

4. Boundaries protect us instead of causing us to self preserve. It helps us to guard our heart and our mind and to take responsibility for our lives.

5. Sometimes to break the drama cycles in our life we have to sit with someone and have a hard conversation and sometimes that will bring peace and be beautiful and sometimes it will end a friendship.

In this episode I answer this question:

What are 3 tools you swear by in your business? (35:18)

Great things we discussed:

1. Andi Andrew 2. Friendship—It’s Complicated

3. Gratitude

4. Bridge to Haven

5. Facing Codependence: What It Is, Where It Comes from, How It Sabotages Our Lives 6. Secrets of the Secret Place: Keys to Igniting Your Personal Time With God

7. Savor Beauty

16 Jan 2023Parenting Well with Sandra & Andy Stanley00:40:32

Hey friend! When it comes to parenting, have you ever wondered if you’re getting it right? What does success look like as a parent anyway?

If you’re a parent, have a parent, or want to be a parent, don’t wait to listen to this episode! I had a fantastic conversation with Andy and Sandra Stanley about their new book, Parenting: Getting It Right.

With three grown children who love each other and love being together, even now that they no longer have to and can make those decisions for themselves, Andy and Sandra don’t hold back on sharing what they’ve learned in raising their family.

Listen in as Andy, Sandra, and I discuss all things parenting, like:

  • How establishing their end goal for raising their children shaped their parenting decisions
  • Why the law of the harvest applies to parenting (and why you can’t ignore it!)
  • One of the most important things we can help our kids understand about their behavior
  • Why teaching kids how to repair and restore relationships so is important

Andy Stanley is the founder of North Point Ministries, with eight Atlanta-area churches and a network of 180 churches around the world, a gifted communicator, and the author of over 20 books. Sandra Stanley is the author of two devotionals, and she loves speaking and writing about faith, family, and fostering.

They have three grown children, whom Sandra homeschooled, and Parenting: Getting It Right is their first book.

Favorite quotes:

“Your potential relationship with your adult children is much longer than the years or seasons you are in right now. Later is longer and you are sowing now you repent a healthy adult relationship with your kids.”  - Andy Stanley

“Parenting with that relationship in mind gets us to the finish line.”  -Sandra Stanley

“We don’t have rules just because we want to have rules. We have rules for reasons and to protect relationships. Our consequences for breaking the rules in our home were all tied to restoring the relationship.” -Andy & Sandra Stanley

“One of the greatest gifts we can give our children is a healthy marriage.” -Andy Stanley

“A great marriage sets our kids up for success in a lot of ways.”  -Sandra Stanley

14 Oct 2019Liz Bohannon on Sseko, pluckiness, and the joy of being average00:54:41

What a fun episode! I'm introducing you to my new friend, Liz Bohannon, she’s the Founder and CEO of Sseko Designs. Liz is changing the world through socially conscious fashion (and flying through the air in Spanx in front of thousands.)

Tune in to hear why she'll never run a chicken farm again, how she uses sandals to send women to college, and her major life decision that made her entire family think she was crazy.

  In this episode we discuss:

1. Why most of us are just average joes--and that's a great thing!

2. The magic a novice brings to the table.

3. How dreaming small is more likely to change the world.

Favorite quotes:

1. Ultimately we build beautiful lives, businesses, and families when we consistently show up and the idea of that not waiting for luck but instead saying I’m gonna be a person of pluck is really intriguing.

2. I think that’s the power of community when you hopefully hear my story and hundreds of other people’s stories that say,  “I wasn’t equipped, I didn’t have the connections, I faced a lot of difficulties, but I still did it. I think that enables people to show up for their own lives.”

13 Jan 2020Beth Moore on fruitfulness, calling, and staying strong.01:12:51

In this episode, I'm with the one and only Beth Moore.

Beth needs no introduction as a trailblazing Bible teacher, author, and speaker-- but we will discuss her call to ministry as a young girl, the fire that keeps her going no matter the circumstances, and what Tuscany taught her about suffering, growth, and God.

In this episode we discuss:

1. How to know if you are actually called or if it's your own desires.

2. Why I almost killed a man on Mount Olympus in her honor.

3. Her enneagram number, favorite mascara, and the one female product you shouldn't wear on stage.

Favorite quotes:

1. A vine produces a grape when a vine is concerned that it may not survive. It has to be under enough stress that it wonders, “I wonder if I’m going to make it here.” It is only then that the grape produces.

2. I feel like there are so many people at risk of quitting because they think that God somehow gave out on them or up on them.

3. If we don’t recognize that going forward involves cutting back to prepare us to go forward and that a lot of times growing looks a lot more like shrinking, then what happens is we quit.

4. I think one of the things I’m most called to do in this era of my life is to cheer people on in their calling. I feel a tremendous responsibility to that. To say to people He’s not done with you. Even if you are going through a time of chastisement with Him, even if you have reaped the whirlwind here. God so faithful. His grace is so immeasurable and He will be faithful. Anybody that cooperates with Him and abides in the vine- He will see to it that we bear much fruit.

In this episode BETH answers your questions:

1. What prompted you to start writing and teaching? (30:33)

2. How do you discern when the calling is from the Lord or your own secret desires? (57:07)

01 Nov 2021Do It For A Day With Mark Batterson00:49:21

Our life is directly related to our everyday habits. We are one habit away from accomplishing any goal that we set. But what if those things don’t come naturally to you? What does it take to build a new habit?

I’m super excited about today’s show. The always brilliant Mark Batterson joins me today to talk about the intersection of faith and habits, how the practice of gratitude can be life-changing, and his new book, Do It For A Day.

Mark Batterson serves as lead pastor of National Community Church in Washington, DC. One church with multiple locations. NCC is focused on reaching emerging generations and meets in theaters throughout the DC metro area. NCC also owns and operates the largest coffeehouse on Capitol Hill. Mark holds a Doctor of Ministry degree from Regent University and is the New York Times bestselling author of 19 books.

Listen in to learn more about:

  1. Mark’s experience of writing his latest book  and why he chose the topic of habits
  2. When setting your goals, you should make them measurable, meaningful, and maintainable.
  3. Mark shares how the science of habit formation is as old as the sermon on the Mount.
  4. If the habit we are trying to implement doesn't match who we truly are, then we won’t keep doing it.

Favorite quotes:

1. Leadership starts with self leadership and self leadership boils down to daily habits. What are you doing one day at a time? 2. If faith is being sure of what we hope for then I think goal setting can actually be a spiritual exercise. 3. You have to 3-M your habits. You have to make them measurable, you have to make them meaningful, and you have to make them maintainable.

4. Habit formation is really identity formation.

30 Nov 2020Lysa Terkeurst on forgiving what you can’t forget00:47:50

The holiday season is upon us! And while it brings us moments of reconnection, Christmas magic, and a whole lot of festive cheer, it can sometimes reveal deep pockets of pain that we haven’t fully addressed yet.

If you know all too well what I’m talking about, today’s episode is for you. I’m honored to share my conversation with author and speaker Lysa TerKeurst, but you may know her as the President of Proverbs 31 Ministries. She shares about her journey with forgiveness, specifically while dealing with a betrayal in her own home, and how she used it to find true healing.

In Lysa’s new book, Forgiving What You Can’t Forget, she teaches us new ways to work through pain and move on with joy in our hearts. She brings a new level of honesty and vulnerability that helped me find a new perspective on this essential skill we all practice in our day-to-day lives.

Things we covered in this shorter-than-usual episode:

1. The shocking blessing of bitterness

2. The best time for forgiveness (the answer will surprise you!)

3. The false narrative we tell ourselves when we experience a trigger

After our conversation, stick around for our coaching time where I share listener-submitted questions about life, faith, and business!

And while you’re here, have you downloaded my FREE Christmas Gift Guide yet? My team and I spent weeks putting together this extensive guide to all things gifts, and I just know you’ll find the perfect item for everyone on your list. Grab your copy at alliworthington.com/christmas

One more thing, this is the last week to join Called Creatives at the introductory price of $19! After this week, the price jumps up to $29 (but if you join now, you’ll lock in the intro rate forever and ever amen).

Favorite quotes:

1. I always thought forgiveness was an unfair gift we have to give to the person who hurt us, and what I discovered is forgiveness is more about God giving the gift of healing to our hearts. 2. Forgiveness is both a decision and a process. 3. The blessing of bitterness is it actually shows us what a tender beautiful heart we have because bitterness doesn't often visit people with cold hearted hearts. Bitterness often comes to people who have loved deep so they got hurt really deep.

4. Forgiveness is supposed to be that step toward healing that we take early on, so that our heart can embrace, not just the reality of the situation, but the potential beauty of the life lessons we can learn along the way.

5. Boundaries aren't meant to shove another person away, but they are meant to help hold me together, so I can fully forgive someone.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. What do I need to do to take care of my skin as I near my 40s? (30:17)

2. What should I do if I don't agree with all my church’s teachings? (36:30)

3. How do I know what to invest in my business? (40:36)

Great things we discussed:

1. Lysa Turkerust 2. Forgiving What You Can’t Forget 3. The Forgiveness Journal 4. Epionce 5. Bye Bye Foundation

6. Bare Minerals 7. The Crown 8. Take Courage

06 Apr 2020John Eldredge on how to get your life back00:55:15

Is it possible to reclaim the abundant life, the un-distracted life, a life deeply rooted in God--without making drastic life changes? We are going to tackle that today and let me tell you--our guest is a legend and an inspiration!

Author, Speaker, and counselor John Eldridge pulls back the curtain and shares his struggle with burnout and digital distraction and the simple steps he implemented to regain a life worth living. He shares how one minute a day could change everything, why you don't have to move to a remote island to find peace, and how to turn the volume down on life to hear God more clearly.

We also chat about:

-Why grandparents need to occasionally press pause on social media too

-Why beauty is important for healing

-and why you need to take your shoes off more often

Favorite quotes:

1. God never intended your soul to carry the heartache of the world.

2. There is a direct correlation between the amount of social media you imbibe and rising levels of anxiety and depression.

3. If you’re able to name what you were feeling it reduces the negative consequences.

4. We can all handle a crazy day. Everybody has crazy days and we can handle a crazy week but what’s become normal for us is crazy as normal. We don’t ever get out of it. We don’t have non-crazy weeks, we don’t have non-crazy months. We are sucked into it and the cumulative effect of that over the years is what really erodes our soul.

5. The world that we live in right now is really brutal on human beings. What we assume to be a normal pace of life, the amount of media that we intake, the amount of time on technology, but also the complexity of the world that most people find themselves having to navigate the trauma, the heartbreak in the world or in friends and family- all of it. That requires souls that are really well and really strong if you’re going to make it through this particular moment but this particular moment is perfectly designed from preventing your soul from being strong and from you being really rooted in the life of God.

In this episode, I’m coaching you on how to not let fear overtake you and sharing three things you can do right now to help overcome anxiety.

15 Mar 2021Defeating Our Doubt and Disbelief with Angie Smith00:46:05

Today I’m with the hilarious, vibrant Angie Smith. She is the author of Woven: Understanding the Bible as One Seamless Story and I couldn’t be more honored to have her by my side as we talk doubt and disbelief.

We all have moments where we doubt God’s plan for us and, maybe, even wonder if He’s really even there. Certainly, a loving God wouldn’t allow us to suffer or withhold the things we most desire, right?

Friends, I’m here to tell you that doubt and disbelief happen to all of us, even the most public Christian figures, writers, and speakers. But doubt doesn’t surface because we don’t want to believe. Instead, it helps us gain clarity on what we believe in and reveals the true nature of our faith.

That’s why I’m so glad Angie is here with me today. She shares her own experience of trying to run from God during a traumatic season, how doubt affected her faith journey, and what we can do to process the guilt that sometimes comes along with disbelief.

Join us for the conversation as we talk about:

  1. How God continues to call us, even during the most traumatic time of our lives.
  2. How our doubt is proof that we want to be reminded that God is real.
  3. And about that time that Angie broke into an American Airlines lounge.

Favorite quotes:

1. I feel like through the process of this I lost my dad and I found my Father again. 2. For a lot of us, the doubting doesn’t come because we don't want to believe, it comes because we so desperately want to.

3. People don’t feel smart enough to study the bible. They feel like it's all been figured out. But here's this and it's super empowering that we have access to all of these things and we can look it up.

4. I always say go into scripture with curiosity. I think that starts to uncover all of these “wait, I didn’t know” moments. Then you kind of chase that rabbit for a little bit.

09 Mar 2020Seth Haines on waking up, faith, and sobriety .00:51:58

What if finding true sobriety is so much more than ditching our substances?

In this powerful interview, my friend and brilliant author Seth Haines shares the heart wrenching story behind how he became an alcoholic after receiving his young son's terminal diagnosis, how he ultimately won his battle against addiction, and how he found true wholeness.

Seth also shares the heart behind his newest book Waking Up and how can we truly wake up physically, emotionally, and spiritually to so much more.

In this episode we discuss:

1. The role of pleasure and self-control in our lives, and how they point us to sobriety.

2. The science behind addiction and how it can help us change addictive patterns.

3. Why our smallest vices are still costing us big.

Favorite quotes:

1. The opposite of drunkenness is not just not drinking. The opposite of drunkness, true sobriety, is being awake to the divine love of God and the world around you.

2. I was using a substance to numb the pain. I won’t only say a substance. Social media was something I used, books, binge-watching Netflix. All of these things became addictions.

3. We have the choice and the chance to wake up. We have the choice and the chance to say, I believe we can wake up. I believe we can wake up from despair. I believe we can wake up from the pain. I believe we can wake up to something beautiful.

4. God didn’t just give us pleasure for the fun of it, it's an invitation to do something.

5. Do the work to wake up! Do the next right thing.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. What is your policy on chores in your house with all those boys? (34:18)

2. Why am I afraid to pray out loud? I live in fear of people asking me to pray. (39:1)

12 Apr 2021Make Overthinking Your Superpower with Jon Acuff01:01:08

There’s an old bumper sticker quote that goes, “Don’t believe everything you think.” But we’ve all done it. It starts as a tiny idea or worry that we push to the back burner. Then slowly over time, it grows and grows until we eventually act on it or let it dictate our decisions.

Changing our mindset is a choice, but it’s easy to forget that we are in the driver’s seat when it comes to our thoughts. That’s why I asked my good friend Jon Acuff to join me on the show today. Jon is whip-smart, funny and a New York Times bestselling author, but more than that, he’s on a mission to help others flip the script on overthinking and turn it into a superpower.

Throughout our conversation, he shares what he’s learned throughout his research on overthinking and talks about the tools we need to master our thoughts. I loved this conversation, and I just know you’ll love his unique blend of humor, honesty and hope.

Stick around to the end to hear all about:

1. What Dolly Parton has in common with telegrams and bald eagles

2. The four simple words you can use to make any goal easier

3. How words can easily control of our thoughts, feelings and emotions

4. The most surprising discovery Jon learned from his research for his new book Soundtracks

Favorite quotes:

I think everyone tends to undervalue the things they're good at and overvalue the things other people are good at. 2. At some point, everybody has to live out the thing they are good at and enjoy being good at that. 3. The soundtracks we listen to have a lot more power than we think. They’re playing constantly and what if we can do something about that? What if we can choose the soundtrack we listen to?

4. Repeating things that are positive about yourself puts them at the top of your playlist. So when you’re in a situation where something happens, it’s like your brain grabs the most recent song.

In this episode I answer this question:

1. How do you decide when to invest in your business?  (52:28)

Hey hey! If your story and career have had highs, lows, and lots of twists, you’re going to want to listen in on this conversation!

She started with a network marketing company and worked her way up to the top 1%. By the following year, she had lost the majority of her income, and her family struggled to pay their bills.

Stefanie found her footing in entrepreneurship in online business! Today, she is a multi-six-figure CEO, podcast host, and Christian business and podcast coach.

Through her courses and coaching, Stefanie helps other women build their businesses via podcasting while staying present in their lives. And she does it all without relying on social media!

  • The first question to ask if you’re reevaluating your relationship with social media

  • Staying motivated on the days you just don’t have it in you to keep going

  • Stefanie’s advice on where to focus your efforts as you build your business

  • “For some people he wants to show you there is another way for you to either grow your business or your ministry. You don’t have to do it the world's way just because everyone else is doing it that way.”
  • “The biggest most incredible changes that you make here on this side of heaven are the things you don’t even know about.”
  • “Don’t create something and try to sell this thing that you have actually not done successfully yourself.”

15 Nov 2021Break the Pattern with Karen Ehman00:49:37

The holiday season is fast approaching, friends! You know, the busy season where we overperform, try to make everything perfect  and say yes to all the things. But, what would the holidays look like if we didn’t run around trying to make others happy all the time?

I’m so excited to have my friend and prolific author, Karen Ehman, back on the show again this week. We sit down to talk about Karen’s new book When Making Others Happy Is Making You Miserable and how to live out your own priorities despite what others think. Plus, Karen shares ways that we can cultivate strategies for knowing when to say yes and how to say no to ultimately break the pattern of people pleasing and confidently live our lives.

This one is super practical, with grace-filled advice, and I think it will resonate with so many of us during this busy season.

Listen in to hear more about:

  1. Why Karen knew it was time to write this particular book
  2. How saying no can be one of the most important things we do
  3. How to handle the pushers, pouters and guilt-bombers when we start putting up boundaries
  4. Karen’s practical and simple advice on what to say yes or no to and shares her “stop it” statements for recovering “people-pleasers”

Favorite quotes:

1. As Christians, we want to be loving and helpful. We want to serve, we want to put other people before ourselves and consider others as better than ourselves. We want to do all of that. But when we cross the line and we're doing it because someone expects us to or we're trying to get in their good graces, now we are doing the right things for the wrong reasons. 2. I realized after the first 10 years of parenting that I don't have to do every single tradition, every single year, in order to make fun memories for my kids.

3. Other people's happiness is not my assignment. It's God's assignment to bring people joy. It's not my assignment to bring them temporary happiness.

4. If God is really calling you to do something, don't fail to do it because you're afraid that somebody won't approve. You don't need their permission.

In this episode I answer this question:

1.When you’re working with your business coaching clients, what habits or beliefs are the ones that make some of them unable to succeed? (40:45)

31 Jul 2023How to Raise Kids with Love and Emotional Intelligence00:41:40

Hey hey friend! If you’ve been here for a while, you know I am passionate about emotional health. I want good emotional health for all my friends (yes, you!), and I brought in one of the smartest people I know to help us get there.

Terra Mattson is a licensed marriage and family therapist and licensed professional counselor who has practiced for nearly two decades and oversees a team of 20 clinicians.

She’s a wife, a mom of two teenage girls, and passionate about helping moms raise their kids well. Terra and I go all in today on a conversation about my favorite topic: emotional well-being in moms and kids.

Listen in as Terra and I talk about:

  • Women discovering who they are apart from a specific role, even in the trenches of motherhood

  • How to disentangle ourselves from unhealthy messaging about the calling of motherhood, even within (maybe especially within) the Church

  • Why emotional regulation is an important piece of raising kids who love like Jesus

  • How our emotions reflect our being made in the image of God

Favorite quotes:

  • “Our identity especially in the Christian community gets wrapped up in motherhood in good and not healthy ways."
  • “The power of knowing our story and how it has influenced us is so important.”
  • “Emotional regulation is one of the number one resources and modeling that we have to give our children.”
  • “Each of us have something to offer and teach each other.”
  • “We don’t have to be in competition. We can link arms and model a different way to our children.”
  • “The work that you are doing at every stage of your children’s lives is affecting the relationship even today.”
  • “Think about the long haul while you are figuring out who you are.”

10 Aug 2020Beth Moore on staying strong.01:17:36

We are back with THE BEST OF- and bringing back the one and only Beth Moore!

Beth needs no introduction as a trailblazing Bible teacher, author, and speaker--but we will discuss her call to ministry as a young girl, the fire that keeps her going no matter the circumstances, and what Tuscany taught her about suffering, growth, and God. And, Beth was so on fire that we let her take over coaching today.

We'll also discuss:

-When to know if you are actually called or if it's your own desires

-Why I almost killed a man on Mount Olympus in her honor

-Her Enneagram number, favorite mascara, and the one female product you shouldn't wear on stage

04 Feb 2019Sheila Walsh on mental health, healing, and the courage to rise above00:57:24

I’m with the amazing Sheila Walsh with one of the most impactful shows we have ever done. We dive into mental health, healing, and rising above what the world throws at you. I think this is a show you will listen to and immediately send it to five friends. It’s that important! Grab a tissue, and a notepad, and get ready to have your life changed with this one!

In this episode we discuss:

1. The importance of taking care of our mental health

2. Why taking care of ourselves is so important for raising the next generation

3.The journey of dealing with buried pain and long-time struggles

Favorite quotes:

1. To love God when you don’t understand His ways is a greater miracle than an instantaneous healing.

2. Some of God’s most precious gifts comes in packages that make your hands bleed when you open them but inside there something you been longing for your whole life.

3. I think that we as the church have not done a great job in helping us struggling with mental illness sometimes it’s been purely out of ignorance that we don’t understand the process.

4. It’s totally to struggle. It doesn’t mean you love God less. It’s okay to be angry with God doesn’t mean you don’t trust Him. It means you think He’s big enough to handle it.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. How do you handle differences with all your kids? (42:21)

2.  How should I handle fasting as someone who has a tendency to have an eating disorder? (45:57)

3. What’s the best way to promote products without spamming people? (49:26)

09 May 2022How to Stay Present in the Here & Now with Jeanne Stevens00:55:28

Hello and welcome! Today I am joined by the amazing speaker, leader, and writer, Jeanne Stevens. Let me just say that I waste no time at all in this episode by asking her all of my many questions about her trek up Mt. Kilimanjaro, You heard that right… Mt. Kilimanjaro! That’s so amazing!

I asked the questions, and she delivered my friends… from hilarious to deeply personal thoughts; she shared all the details with us about what God was doing in her in the midst of this life-changing experience. And interestingly enough, Jeanne shares how she wonders if her book didn’t actually start to take shape during her experiences on Mt. Kilimanjaro.

Her soon-to-release book is called What’s Here Now?, and I just love the subtitle - How to stop rehashing the past, rehearsing the future, and start receiving the present. So good.

I promise you don’t want to miss listening in to hear Jeanne teach us how to embrace the present moment and all that God has for us here, now.

Jeanne Stevens is also the founding and co-lead pastor of Soul City Church in Chicago, one of America's fastest-growing urban churches. Prior to starting Soul City Church, Stevens was on the pastoral staff at Willow Creek Community Church and North Point Community Church. Jeanne's passion is to help people wake up to their purpose as they pursue a life of wholehearted freedom. She lives in Chicago with her husband, Jarrett, and their two children. What’s Here Now will be available nationwide on May 17, 2022.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • Valuable questions to ask ourselves as a way to come into our “now” moments often throughout the day,
  • How the present is where God lives, and it is where God invites us to live with Him.
  • The differences between our automatic self and our authentic self.

Favorite quotes:

~ When things don’t go the way you believe they should go, it is packed with all the very best learning.

~ It was such a great inner teacher for me to not make it to the top and to unwind all of what that meant in my life.

~We are so inclined to think about what happened, to go to the ‘what was, the what ifs and all I had was what IS’ ,this present moment - here on the mountain. And the thing to do each day was to put one foot in front of the other and to be present with that.

~I was doing the work of God but the work of God was deteriorating in me.

~What I began to realize and recognize in my own life  was that the places  where I was most hanging out were in the past and in my future. I was all about rehashing things that already happened or rehearsing things that had not yet happened and I wasn't allowing myself to be present to this NOW moment.

~I need to locate myself to this location and check into this present moment.

In this episode I answered this question:

  1. How can I calm myself down when I am feeling stressed so often? (44:17)

25 Apr 2022How to Stop Performing for Your Worth with Mary Marantz00:43:44

You cannot achieve your way into worth. Full stop. Oh, friends, did you feel the weight of that statement along with me.

Be sure to listen in today as Mary and I discuss her soon-to-release (and absolutely beautiful, I might add) devotional, Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots. This is a message that I believe will resonate with so many women. The woman who feels like she must always be "on." The one who is always performing. You know her. Maybe you are her.

Mary shares some practical ways to move from achieving, striving, and performing for our worth to the grace, freedom, and purpose that come from knowing our identities and callings are determined by God. Whether you lean toward what Mary describes as the Performer, the Contortionist, the Tight-Rope Walker, the Masquerader, the Illusionist, or all of the above, this is a conversation you won’t want to miss out on!

Mary Marantz is a speaker, an entrepreneur, plus the bestselling author of Dirt and her soon-to-release book, Slow Growth Equals Strong Roots. She is also the podcast host of The Mary Marantz Show. She lives in an 1880s fixer-upper by the sea in New Haven, Connecticut, with her husband Justin and their two very fluffy golden retrievers, Goodspeed & Atticus.

Listen in to learn more about:

Signs that you may have an achievement orientation/mentality.

How we must release other people’s dreams and expectations of us.

The filter we walk through life with and how that can affect everything.

Favorite quotes:

  • For those of us who did not grow up with a lot, a self-preservationist switch got flipped. It can appear to the outside world as selfish or self-absorption, but we just feel like we are trying to survive.
  • So many of us are walking around -we are ears to dreams that we have never dreamed, hopes that we have never hoped , a crystal plated version of the good life that someone else has held on our behalf.
  • I started treating God like a Pez dispenser, keeping the sugary sweets and the highs of getting everything I ever wanted of more of success coming. Never mind the anemic in my faith, in the process. Never mind that what I actually needed besides a filling is an extraction of all the I have tried to fill my life with just so the raw nerve endings go quiet for a while - It never works.
  • Have you ever reached a point where you are starting to get tired of all of this achieving and  running and acquiring and accumulating? Then none of the other stuff is going to work.

20 Jan 2020What to do when you feel called to write and speak with Lisa Whittle00:56:22

Do you feel called to write or speak? Over the past decade, I have received questions from hundreds of women who feel called but haven’t known where to start. This week, I have a special episode for you that lays it all out!

I'm with my good friend Lisa Whittle to share our personal stories of how we built writing and speaking careers. We'll share common misconceptions, practical advice for getting started, and how to take the next step. We are also announcing something extremely exciting for those wanting to step confidently into this space. If that's you, don't miss this episode!

In this episode we discuss:

1. How do I start speaking if I've never been invited?

2. What if I don't have any connections?

3. What do I do if I'm struggling with writer's block?

Favorite quotes:

  1. God is doing big things in the hearts of women and we change the world when we share our stories. You may not feel creative, but God has called you to create!
  2. We are launching a coaching community for women who are called to share their messages of freedom with a lost and broken world. We want to remove the intimidation, confusion and frustration of navigating your calling to write and speak by guiding you in developing your gifting, building your message and expanding your reach.
  3. On what holds women back-

We think it’s a lack of information or skills, but what really holds us back is our self-doubt and our imposter syndrome. We get overwhelmed because we don’t know where to start. We want to help you start!

  1. On progressing to our goals-

If God has called you and you stay obedient to learning what you need to learn and take small steps every day, He will take you exactly where you are supposed to go. You can’t let your present circumstances or your past define where you go in the future.

  1. On deciphering his will and our will-

When you walk with God, His dreams for you and your dreams and desires for yourself tend to morph. You will know much more clearly what you’re supposed to be doing with your life if you stay in tune with Him.

In this episode we answer your questions:

1. How do you get started when you are unconnected and feel unqualified? (26:52)

2. How do you know the difference between the dream of writing and speaking being God’s dream for you or a dream you need to let go of? (31:33)

3. Is there anything I can do to position myself as a speaker before I’ve actually been called up to the mic? (35:55)

4. Do I have to be published to be a credible speaker? (43:39)

5. I have an idea of what I want to write about and I’ve begun keeping notes.  But when I open up my computer to start writing I freeze up staring at a blank screen.  How can I take my ideas and thoughts and create something cohesive. (47:31)

As a listener, you have access to Called Creatives today! We are only opening the doors for seven days and you have early access!

Called Creatives is a specialized coaching community for women who are called to write and speak.

25 Jan 2021Surviving the Storms with Ruth Schwenk00:46:06

Hi friends! We’ve been through a lot over the past year, as people, as communities, as a nation and world. And although there is comfort to be found in suffering through hardships together, what happens to our souls when we’re left suffering privately or by ourselves?

My good friend Ruth Schwenk is joining me on the show today to help us figure that out. Ruth is an author of many wonderful books about parenting, the founder of TheBetterMom.com, and the co-founder of FortheFamily.org.

But what I’m really excited about is her most recent book she co-wrote with her husband Patrick. It’s called In a Boat in the Middle of a Lake: Trusting the God Who Meets Us in Our Storm.

She talks about this new book along with an update on her husband’s health, which inspired the idea of writing about God meeting you in the roughest waters and in the darkest storms.

We also chat about some practical tips on how to take care of yourself right now, even if you’re sitting in the middle of one of those dark, stormy lakes.

Stick around for the whole episode to hear:

  • Ruth sharing some of the ways God has used suffering and trials to change and teach His people.
  • How suffering can be a form of education and how God protects us through unanswered prayers.
  • When it’s okay to take a step back from giving of your time and resources (and who you should surround yourself with and why!)

Favorite quotes:

1. When we’re put in the middle of a storm our faith is tested. It exposes what we really believe about God. And honestly that’s where God really grows us and helps us learn because we have no other choice but to cling to him in that. 2. The biggest thing he does in our suffering is helps us to turn to him and deeper and grow our faith.

3. It’s ok to sit in your pain. It’s not comfortable. Who wants to sit in their pain? But it’s the day after day, step after step looking towards him that he used to change us.

4. I think in dryness and in burnout, he’s using that to purify our faith and to deepen our faith. He wants us to keep seeking him. Eventually if we keep seeking him day after day we discover that he was there all along waiting for us.

In this episode I answer this question:

1. How should I handle fasting as someone who has a tendency to have an eating disorder? (41:32)

Great things we discussed:

It's the 2019 Summer movie season! Candace Payne (AKA Chewbacca Mom) my movie-loving friend, joins me and we take you through the biggest movies of the Summer.

18 Sep 2023How to Trust God’s Grace with Max Lucado00:40:48

Hey friend! Have you ever wondered if your past is too much for God to use you? What can He do with all of the ways we struggle? Have you ever bargained or wrestled with God?

One of my favorite guests (and fan-favorite!) Max Lucado is here to talk with us about it all today.

Called “America’s Pastor” by Christianity Today, Max is the bestselling author of 45 books and counting. He is a pastor and speaker who says he “writes books for people who don’t read books.” Max is a father of three, grandfather of two, and he lives with his wife in San Antonio.

In his newest book, God Never Gives Up on You: What Jacob’s Story Teaches Us About Grace, Mercy, and God’s Relentless Love, Max examines the life of Jacob in Scripture, how God loved and pursued Jacob, and what that means for us.

Join Max and I for a great conversation as we talk about:

  • Where he gets his  book ideas

  • Why there aren’t as many books about Jacob as there are about biblical heroes like Daniel and David

  • How to discern when our understanding of God has become too small

  • Why Max connects with and treasures the story of Jacob

  • God’s faithfulness to his people, no matter what

You’ll also love hearing my chat with Max about how to have hope in a divided world. Check it out here.

Favorite quotes:

  • “In the story of Jacob he is hot and cold, in and out, weak, and then he’s strong. He has dreams and then he wrestles with God. Then he falls and flops. It is every person’s story.”
  • “Jacob’s relationship is a transactional relationship with God. You do this. I’ll do that. That really strikes home with many of us.”
  • “All of us go through some negotiation or transactional relationship with God.”
  • “It is okay to wrestle with these things. Ultimately there is one authority and it is not you or me.”
  • “Be kind to yourself. God hasn’t given up on you. Don’t give up on yourself.”

19 Oct 2020Lisa Bevere on mentors, mom guilt, and what she would say to her younger self01:00:03

The one and only Lisa Bevere.

Lisa brings the fire and preaches the "bark off a tree" as I say in this episode, as she shares about her new book Godmothers. Lisa shares what a Godmother really is (spoiler alert: it's not a magical fairy or mafia mother figure!) and why we all need spiritually mature women intentionally speaking into our lives.

We also tackle mom guilt, how to start actually enjoying our lives instead of performing for others, and why it takes courage for older women to approach mentoring relationships.

We also talk about:

-How to nurture your dream in the early stages

-The amazing advice another mom gave her early on

-Why women need each other more than ever in 2020

Favorite quotes:

A godmother is a mother who is always going to point you towards godliness. This means she’s going to ask you the questions you don’t want to answer and tell you the things you don’t necessarily want to hear.

A godmother is someone who will be by your side, not necessarily on it because you could be wrong. But she will be by your side pointing you to growth and blessing what is in your life from your own hard lessons.

I have the right to write my life. I have the right to move forward with strength just like everybody else does. God is inviting us to write our lives well. Which means we need to do it with intent and an awareness that we have a story behind us and a story in front of us.

You are not allowed to let the enemy’s narrative be the last page of your story.

Sometimes God says step outside so that something inside of you can be enlarged. We need to be people who understand that our God turned hopelessness into a victory.

Don’t miss how she references the word reboot many times throughout this interview… such wisdom is found in each mention! I promise!

Bianca Juarez Olthoff is the best-selling author of Play With Fire and How To Have Your Life Not Suck and host of the We’re Going There podcast. She is a passionate Jesus-loving, Bible-teaching, book-writing MexiRican who loves to help people navigate life, connect in community, and live significantly.

  • The practical ways Bianca accomplishes so much in her everyday life, including what she learned after tracking 14 days of her life.

Favorite quotes:

~ If the Lord is asking you to lay this down it’s because it’s not Yours to carry and when you pick this up it will be with even greater strength.

~ When you’re building a business, when you're building your purpose , when you’re walking in you’re calling -it’s like triage, I need to invest in the things that are actually going to live.

~Anointing does not mean awesome, it means you are set apart.

~ Identify your voice. What is your teaching style?

~ Right now we have access to every amazing biblical communicator there is across the world. What happens is that we are prone to emulate the voice , the sound of other people we admire. That’s great to be inspired by, It’s dangerous to be influenced by.

Hey Friend! Merry Christmas! We are in our final week of sharing some of my favorite books.

This week we are diving into Chapter 7, Time: Finding Your Rhythm in a World of Overwhelm from my book, Breaking Busy: How to Find Peace and Purpose in a World of Crazy.

No one is living their life where they are not busy, right? We all have something to do, whether it is a work project, raising our kids, etc.

Breaking Busy" gets into all the stuff in our lives, both the obvious and the hidden, that's just adding to our chaos and busyness. As we're gearing up for the new year, it's a great time to think about the year we want and how we want to feel. A big part of that? Looking at how we're spending our time. It's key for setting up a year that really feels good.

Make sure to stick around to the end to hear some practical tips and advice on setting boundaries on our time and live with more intentionality as we head into 2024.

Listen in on these audio chapters to hear:

  • How using a time diary changed my life and can change your life

  • What is “ tyranny of the urgent” and how even Jesus set boundaries

  • Choosing discomfort over resentment

  • Practical tips on setting boundaries

  • What to take out and what to add in when it comes to time management.

Favorite quotes:

  • “The truth is when you are successful, spiritually healthy, and emotionally healthy it benefits everybody.”
  • we want to feel this next year, examining how we spend our time is really the key.”
  • “The truth is that whether you are the manager of a home, CEO of a company, or a busy entrepreneur, your ability to be successful is equal to your physical and mental health and your ability to manage your time and energy.”
  • “Instead we should be doing more activities that actually make us happy and help us grow into who we are meant to be. But we’re never going to get to those activities if we don’t first set our goals and our priorities.”
  • “Make sure you spend time doing things that get you closer to your goals.”
  • “Finding your rhythm and managing your time is about being proactive and leaving room for things in life that are the most important. We have to intentionally manage our calendars so we can give priority to the most important things.”

06 Jul 2020How to stop overthinking according to your enneagram type with Anne Bogel01:02:53

Raise your hand if the last few months has had you stuck in your head more than usual!

It's easy to get stuck on loops of anxiety, worry, or second-guessing. Today, I'm joined by my brilliant friend Anne Bogel- enneagram expert and author of the new book Don't Overthink It.

Anne breaks down how overthinking typically manifests for each enneagram type and how we can break out of unhealthy cycles with quick and amazingly simple adjustments- so you can live with more freedom, joy, and clarity.

We also chat about:

-Why overthinking may not look the way you imagine.

-How perfectionism traps us into chronic overthinking.

-Why scheduling time to worry can save you tons of mental energy in the long run.

Favorite quotes:

1. When people lose their cool or get really mad about something they see on the internet or say something they regret, or get sucked into endless scrolling on Instagram they don’t do it when they are healthy, happy, well-rested and well-fed. They do it when they’re tired and hungry.

2. I thought I knew what overthinking looked like but I did not see how many different forms it takes in our lives. It can feel like worry, it can look like second-guessing, it can look like spending too much time on second guesses, it could look like laying awake at 3am, it could look like worrying about the small stuff but the underlying thread is that these thoughts are repetitive, unhealthy, unhelpful.

3. You think nobody should know your own life and own mind better than you but I think it really comes back around to you need some limitations. Limit yourself to free yourself.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. Is it true that God never gives us more than we can handle? (49:12)

2. I want to start a side business to bring in income for the family but I don't know if I have the personality for it. How do I know if I can make it work? (52:14)

03 Feb 2020Robin Dance on doubt, overcoming people pleasing, and freedom.01:01:03

I'm with author and OG Blissdom friend Robin Dance! Robin bares all during our time together--including a season where she considered leaving the church and her faith, the trauma of losing her mom at 9, and how chronic people-pleasing left her feeling like a fake.

Robin's vulnerability and transparency in this episode will help us find the life-lines we need during times of doubt and how to let our questions point us back to God.

In this episode we discuss:

1. Why taking offense often may be a symptom of something bigger.

2. The time she caught the eye of Harry Conninck Jr.

3. How our doubt can bring us back to God.

Favorite quotes:

1. Your doubts could be the very thing He is using to call you back to Him.

2. As a woman of faith, I should be living to please God not anyone else.

3. Where you are today, you will not be here forever. God will use this hard situation and turn it around for your good.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. Can we really learn to stop self-sabotage?  (35:40)

2. How do you find joy in life when God isn't answering your prayers? (41:15)

3. How do you know if you are cut out for business? (48:55)

02 Aug 2021Kennesha Buycks Joins Us for Smart Girl Summer00:33:42

Hey Hey friends! Once again, our Smart Girl Summer series continues again this week with the amazing and inspiring, Kennesha Buycks.

Kennesha is a mom, gifted artist, writer, and curator. Also, she is the creative force behind Restoration House, a dream realized while living on the island of Oahu, Hawaii back in 2010.   A proud Alabama girl, Kennesha realized at a very young age she had a knack not only for the creative but for connecting the hearts and minds of the communities in which she had the privilege of sharing life through those very talents.

She has such a unique perspective when it comes to following her why for her life and her business, and her passion to bring encouragement, honesty, and inspiration to each and every project she works on.

In today’s episode, we discuss how we can protect ourselves from imposter syndrome, shame, and comparison, encouragement for the hard seasons of life, and how we can lean into God to make sure we are following what He is calling us to do. Also, you don’t want to miss hearing my take on Medium or Fine ballpoint pens!

Listen to learn more:

  1. How to use boundaries in place for social media so that you don't get sucked in with comparison and shame.
  2. How we need to be careful of sharing too much of our lives on social media and we need to set the standards for the generations that follow us.
  3. When you use your gits the way that you are supposed to, it serves someone in a way that no one else can do but you.

Favorite quotes:

1. I think my heart is to always try to get us back to what God always intended. If we think about Scripture and we look at Genesis, we think about the garden that was our first home. That was where we were meant to commune with Jesus, with God, with the Holy Spirit. 2. It's helpful to remember my why, remember my purpose, it helps me focus on the fact that I don't have to feel like an imposter if I'm actually doing what I'm called to do.

3. I believe that when we're vulnerable it brings freedom.

4. I think that when we're in a space where we are freely flowing, because I think when we're not publicizing our work as an artist, when we're not putting our stuff out there, whether it's words or actual paintings or whatever your artistic form is, when we're not putting it out there, we have a different energy and we have a different motivation We're literally just creating to create.

2. Instagram

3. Tome

10 Jun 2019Ruth Soukup on surviving, thriving, and why we need to do it scared01:09:32

In this episode, we are joined by business powerhouse Ruth Soukup. Ruth shares her incredible journey of overcoming depression, suicide attempts, and self-harm to becoming a healthy mom and wife and successful entrepreneur. Ruth also shares why her motto "Do it Scared" is so important for her both in life and business.

In this episode we discuss:

1. Why you should bravely take action in your life and business, even if you're terrified

2. How to recognize your unique brand of fear

3. How to break through debilitating cycles and find courage

Favorite quotes:

1. Stop chasing the numbers that you think mean you’re popular and start chasing the numbers that are actually going to make a difference in your business.

2. So often people think that “well I need more page views or I need more likes on Instagram or I need more followers in order to make more money,” and that’s absolutely not true. If you’re not leveraging the audience you have, you’re never going to be leveraging the audience you wish you had.

3. It is because of those hard times, not despite them, that I’m now able to have the business that I have.

4. There was never one moment when it magically all turned around. I think so often in life we expect there to be this magical moment, you know this huge turning point of saying “oh from now on my life is going to be different.” It didn’t work that way for me.

5. No matter how badly you up your life, you can always turn it around.

6. Fear impacts us, whether we call it fear or anxiety or we call it this apprehension about moving forward.

7. Once you can start to identify that fear and start to see those patterns in your life, that’s when you can start to do something about it.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. What do I need to do to make my skin look great as I near my 40s? (48:26)

2. What should I do if I don’t agree with all of my church’s teachings? (54:50)

02 Dec 2019Laura Wifler and Emily Jensen of Risen Motherhood on work, motherhood, and freedom.01:06:34

Today, we are with the brilliant women behind the podcast Risen Motherhood- Laura Wifler and Emily Jensen.

We chat about how potty training launched their blockbuster show that millions love, what it's like to balance work and raising small children, and how we can use comparison to point us to truth.

In this episode we discuss:

1. What it looks like when two different personalities and styles work together.

2. The importance of community for working moms.

3. How to conquer mom guilt

Favorite quotes:

1. Nothing is perfect. Nothing is guaranteed. But if I don’t have enough time for Jesus then I’m missing something and that’s something that I always try to prioritize no matter what life is looking like that day.

2. When we dig under the surface of what we’re wrestling with in our soul it’s the fact that we feel before the Lord we are not enough. We are not good enough and the good news is that God has sent His son Jesus Christ to be good on our behalf to meet all the measurements and standards.

3. In Christ, we are not called to live with guilt and shame. That’s one of the beautiful things about the gospel is that we don’t have to live with mom guilt or any guilt at all.

  3. How self-development and personal leadership are key to success

Favorite quotes-

  1. There are different images of God that we reflect as part of our personality. Every type has to be aware of when this goes to the unhealthy side. There’s beauty and there’s great things about each type but anything overused and misused can actually be a detriment rather than a strength.
  2. Lead yourself well to lead others better. The hardest person you’ll lead is yourself.
  3. One of the secrets of success is surrounding yourself in a healthy community.
  4. I love leadership I love helping people understand that sphere of influence you’ve been given, and how do you steward that well.

Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business.

In this episode, I answer these questions-

  1. I learned so much about the importance of self-talk in Fierce Faith. I loved the whole book and it literally changed my life. There’s one thing I still need more help with, I can’t seem to break the habit on negative self-talk. Any advice (47:39)
  2.  Sometimes I feel like I can hear God very clearly and sometimes I don’t feel like a hear from him at all. I get panicked when I can’t hear him and wonder if it’s because he is upset with me. Is this normal? (51:53)
  3. I keep bumping up against struggles in my business. How do you know if it’s a sign to stop? (56:09)

25 Mar 2019Kyle Idleman on courage, confidence, and not giving up.01:07:37

I’m with Kyle Idlemann discussing the secret to courage, how to live confidently, and why making the decision to not give up is so crucial for us all.

I’m also answering your questions about how I handle family struggles and personal information in my books, moral failure in leadership (yikes), and if you really need systems in your business.

  In this episode we discuss:

1. The need for courage 2. The confidence we can have in the midst of trials 3. What weighs us down and how to get through it 4. How to overcome the lies that cause us to quit

Favorite quotes:

1. There’s a difference between putting your arm around somebody and saying to them “I’m so sorry for what you are going through,” and saying to somebody “Get back out there, this is not the time to give up. This isn’t the time to quit.”

2. We want comfort but what we really need is courage.

3. Faith is this idea of sticking with the puzzle even when we don’t understand why the pieces come together.

4. As a follower of Jesus, I know who does have what it takes. I know who my confidence can be in. Instead of focusing on what I don’t have, we focus on what He offers.

5. Perseverance leads to happiness.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. How do you deal with writing about family issues and struggles in your books? (39:16)

2. If a Christian commits a sexual sin, is this forgivable? If so, why are ministers who have moral failure asked to step down? (46:12)

3. I’m a creative entrepreneur and I hate systems. So far it hasn’t hurt my growth. Do I have to build systems or can I stay successful without them? (53:15)

31 Jan 2022How to Stop Striving with Ruth Chou Simons00:41:53

Does it feel like your anxiety level is at an all-time high?! You’re not alone. Ruth Chou Simons joins me to talk about how to care for ourselves, especially when we feel like we have to keep striving to make things feel like they’re okay.

After the last two years, I’m sure that everyone is feeling it in one way or another. It’s one of the reasons why I had to hit the pause button on writing my next book till this year.

Ruth and I explore the pressure we feel to do more, define what striving is, and discuss ways we can check in with ourselves when we are doing more from our own power instead of relying on God’s plan.

We also dive into how to ultimately find God’s grace and why what He offers is so much better than the hamster wheel of performance and perfection. This conversation is so good and you may want to take notes! Ruth drops some brilliant truth bombs for us.

Ruth is a talented artist, and a best-selling, award-winning author of several books, including her latest release When Strivings Cease: Replacing the Gospel of Self-Improvement with the Gospel of Life-Transforming Grace.

Listen to learn more about :

  1. How to stop subscribing to the Gospel of Self-Improvement and replace it with the Gospel of Grace.
  2. How we can cease striving and yet be productive and fruitful.
  3. How to discern making Christ our role model as opposed to making ourselves the hero of our own stories.

 Favorite quotes:

The truth is we have to be honest and keep realigning our hearts with what is true,(because pandemic or not),  it is pretty easy to spiral into a narrative or a thought pattern that takes you far from what is actually true.

Weariness in itself is not some awful thing. It is that weariness that is self-induced by carrying the weight of performance, approval and belonging - all those things on our own shoulders, thinking that it was up to us to hold all things together and that, is not the gospel.

If we are Christ followers until we know what is unshakeable and true about our identities in Christ and until we know what is sure and true and what we already have in Christ, we will be chasing after something thinking that we can attain it for ourselves, when it was meant to be given by God alone.

In this episode I answer this question:

1. How do I know what to name my Business? (34:50)

07 Aug 2023How to Overcome Mom Guilt and Prioritize Self-Care00:56:08

Tomorrow is the big day! My newest book, Remaining You While Raising Them, releases into the world, and I can’t wait for it to be in your hands!

To celebrate, my friend Phoebe Barron is here to turn the tables and interview me!

Phoebe is the mental health consultant on Remaining You While Raising Them. She is a licensed counselor and counseling professor. She speaks to churches about emotional health and lives in Oklahoma with her husband, three kids, and fluffy golden doodle.

I’m thrilled for you to hear some of her perspectives firsthand (you know, I couldn’t resist sneaking in a few questions of my own!).

Join Phoebe and I as we discuss:

  • The single biggest driver of mom guilt (secret: it’s not your mom or your MIL)

  • Why having a mother who models caring for herself and her needs is so important to our daughters (and our sons!)

  • One magic question that keeps “taking care of mom” from becoming just another thing on your to-do list

  • How trusting your gut and doing what’s best for your family are backed by research

  • My ultimate goal for writing THIS book

Favorite quotes:

  • “When I asked about mom guilt almost all women said they had mom guilt but the single biggest driver was social media.”
  • “The most important thing we can do to be good moms is to make sure that we are as emotionally healthy as possible.”
  • “Taking care of ourselves emotionally is the most selfless thing we can do for our families.”
  • “Getting in the habit of saying what do I need right now is the ultimate self-care.”
  • “There are a few ways of really parenting up. There are a ton of ways of getting it good enough and there are no ways of getting it perfect.”
  • “Our job is to model health to our children, discipline our children, and give them discipline but most of all to love our children. If we do those things our kids are going to be just fine.”

22 Aug 2022How to Raise Emotionally Strong Boys with David Thomas00:43:19

Hey, hey! Welcome back to the show! Today’s episode will be so helpful to anyone who has a boy in their life that they care about deeply.

David Thomas joins me today to talk about raising emotionally strong boys. He’s spent 25 years counseling boys and young men. After all, we live in a world that often bombards our boys with messages like “don’t feel” or “don’t ask for help.” Both are harmful messages and, unfortunately, ones that many of them absorb throughout their lifetimes.

Listen in as David and I discuss how we can best communicate with the boys (and even the men) in our lives, along with practical ways to help them develop new vocabulary and skills that will better serve them over time.

As the mom of five boys, you know I listened closely to David’s advice in this episode, my friends. Such wisdom!

David is the director of Family Counseling at Daystar Counseling Ministries in Nashville, Tennessee. He has co-authored ten books, including his two latest titles, Raising Emotionally Strong Boys and Strong and Smart: A Boy’s Guide to Building Healthy Emotions.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • What causes boys to instinctively begin to channel all primary emotions (fear, sadness, confusion, disappointment) into anger around ages 9-10
  • Some red flags may indicate the boys in our lives are struggling emotionally and how we can help them recognize, regulate, and repair those emotions
  • How Jesus is the perfect example of healthy masculinity

Favorite quotes:

~Boys tend to have a less expansive emotional vocabulary which makes us think they have fewer emotions.

~Somewhere around  9 to 10 boys instinctively begin  to channel all emotions fear, sadness, confusion and disappointment into one emotion and that is anger.

~Having side by side conversations rather than eye to eye. Even shame registers differently for us as males and too much eye to eye ,where  females can experience intimacy and connection, we males experience shame and  threat in that.

~Anger is a secondary emotion; there is always something going on beneath.

~This evidence that Jesus felt all the things we are going to feel and had an emotional  presence and strength in the midst of it. He also was a man who walked in intimate close relationships with a handful  of men.

09 Oct 2023How to Develop Better Boundaries with Lysa TerKeurst, Sasha Shillcutt, and Gary Thomas00:44:55

How can I know if my boundaries are healthy? Is it okay to have boundaries in the first place? I know I need boundaries, but where and how do I start?

Do these questions sound familiar?

As women, we have so many questions about boundaries- what they are, how we put them in place, and if it is selfish to have them- and this episode is here to help!

Today’s show features some of the best advice I’ve ever received from experts on boundaries. I wanted to share it all with you, all in one place.

Boundaries are there to help you (and the people you love!) thrive, and by the end of this show, you’ll see how they do just that!

Join us as we learn about:

  • Why boundaries are more than a good idea (because they’re God’s idea!) with Lysa TerKeurst

  • The difference between being approachable and being accessible with Sasha Shillcutt

  • How to spot toxicity in others (and in our ourselves) with Gary Thomas

Favorite quotes:

  • “Boundaries are not just a good idea. They are God’s idea. He established the foundations of the world using boundaries. ”
  • “Where there is chaos there is usually a lack of boundaries and a need for more intentional boundaries or healthy boundaries to be put in place.”
  • “A boundary without a consequence is nothing but a bad suggestion.”
  • “If you don’t have boundaries in your life, someone will have them for you.”
  • “We want to be women who are approachable. It doesn’t mean we have to be women who are always accessible.”
  • “I walk away from toxic people not to go binge Netflix. I walk away to invest with reliable people. I walk from toxic relationships into healthy relationships.”

04 Apr 2022How to Live a Meaningful Life with Joshua Becker00:30:22

Welcome friend! Have you ever found yourself wanting to spend hours talking to someone who is not only interesting but also interested in what you have to say? Allow me to introduce you to my friend Joshua Becker.

Joshua is here to talk to us about living a meaningful life with no regrets. He shares how we can move past the things holding us back and how we don’t feel as much regret if we are in service to others. You know that I just love when research backs up what we’ve known for thousands of years.

Joshua Becker is a prolific author, father of two, and founded a nonprofit organization for orphans called The Hope Effect. He is also the founder and editor of Becoming Minimalist, a website dedicated to intentional living for the last 13 years. (He’s been blogging on the internet almost as long as I have!).

Listen in to learn more about:

  1. Joshua’s journey from being a youth pastor in Vermont to being a full-time blogger and embracing his minimalist journey.
  2. What minimalism is and how others can push back against it.
  3. How to overcome past mistakes that may make you feel regretful.
  4. Practical steps for those who choose to become more minimalist.

Favorite quotes:

Possessions were not the only distraction that kept me from pursuing my best and most meaningful, fruitful life.

Why would I want to chase more money if I don’t need more money to live on?

Admit the mistakes, notice them and do your best to learn from them. We can redeem our past mistakes if we allow them to recreate who we are.

Minimalism, to me,  has always been removing the things I don't need, so I can focus on pursuits that are more important in the short run and long run.

29 Jul 2019Lisa Jo Baker on the changes, challenges, and the beauty of being in the middle.01:13:02

I'm with the wonderful Lisa Jo Baker, as we talk about the changes, challenges, and the beauty of being in the middle. Lisa tackles how we can truly develop a healthy mindset that allows us to enjoy and stay present in this fulfilling and fruitful season of life

In this episode we discuss:

1. How to live your middle-age years to the fullest

2. How we can see our bodies as lovely and strong despite changes

3. Why she wasn't afraid to share her muffin top picture with the world

Favorite quotes:

1. I don’t need to seize the day. I just need to make time to see it. I don’t have the energy to seize the day. I can barely seize the moment to do laundry. But here’s what I can do, this is why I wrote a whole book about it. I can see the day. That is a much lower pressure threshold.

2. Somehow as women, we want to erase the marks of time, the things that show what it took to get here. I just believe so strongly, I think about that verse so often that says ‘the Lord has made everything beautiful in its time,’ and that applies to us as women.

3. My kid’s feelings aren’t supposed to be the boss of me. I’m not supposed to be the boss of me. The Holy Spirit is supposed to be the boss of me.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. I have three little kids and can’t keep up with all the details. How do you do it with 5 kids? How can I remember all the little things for them? (51:01)

2. How can I introduce God into people whos had zero exposure and not overwhelm them? (58:21)

3. I can’t work at home without getting distracted, should I pay for a fancy coworking space? (1:02:15)

26 Aug 2019Bianca Olthoff on how to have your life not suck01:17:25

Today, I'm with my battle buddy Bianca Olthoff. With humor and transparency like no other, Bianca is going to get us fired up about finding amazing mentors, avoiding unnecessary ruts and mistakes, and living a life that won't suck.

In this episode we discuss:

1. How to pursue a mentor and get the most out of your time with them

2. What she wishes she would have known in her teens and 20s

3. How she accidentally came up with her brilliant new book title #notsuck

Favorite quotes:

  1. The season and the time that we are in, we are putting forward everything that is awesome. We will post it on Instagram and put a good filter and we’ll tweak it and we’ll geotag from tropical locations. We will do all these things but I think that this is an opportunity for us to go first and for us to tell people this was a really hard season. This is a dark season. This is a season of failure and there are things that I learned. “Hey, you will probably fail, you probably will fall, you probably will falter, but this is how you can shorten up that curve, this is how you can still have your faith intact. Hey, this is some ways you can survive this season of suck in a way you can thrive and not just feel like you are barely making it out.”
  2. I feel like if we can be for each other, we can go further and faster and farther if we sincerely care about this Biblical principle; love your neighbor as yourself.
  3. Do you know what our greatest commodity is? Time. So when someone gives you time, don’t squander it.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. How do I know if I’m self-sabotaging myself and if I am how do I stop it? (54:06)

2. How do I learn to trust God? (1:01:08)

3. How should the “about me” page on my website be written? What’s the best strategy for success? (1:07:39)

22 Jan 2024Busting Myths: Sacred vs. Secular with Jordan Raynor00:45:05

Today, my friend Jordan Raynor and I are talking about the sacredness of our secular work. Join us as we dive into what we think about work in light of eternity.

Jordan Raynor is an author, podcast host, and executive chairman of Threshold 360.  Through his bestselling books, the Mere Christians podcast, and his weekly devotionals, Jordan has helped millions of Christians in every country on earth connect the gospel to their work.

In this episode, Jordan shares insights from his new book, The Sacredness of Secular Work, and reminds us that our daily jobs have significance for eternity even when we are not explicitly sharing the gospel.

Join Jordan and I as we talk about:

  • Value of our daily secular work (05:59)

  • Rehearsing for eternity (12:15)

  • Half-truths for heaven (10:16)

  • Most surprising discoveries from Jordan’s research (21:37)

  • The anti-bucket list (23:00)

  • Tips for how to make disciples (27:12)

  • Using conversation launchers to have more intentional conversations (27:54)

Favorite quotes:

05:59 - “The value of secular work depends upon the value of creation and the value of creation depends on what God's going to do with this creation in the end.”

10:16  - “The half-truths of heaven rob our joy and purpose in the present and hope for the future.”

12:15  - “The very same thing I am doing today is simply rehearsing something that is eternal and one day will be perfectly consummated with Christ on the new Earth.”

20:21 - “We mere Christians working as entrepreneurs and baristas in the pews inevitably feel guilty about working in the very places most likely to make disciples of Jesus Christ.”

27:27 - “When you understand that 100% of your time at work matters for eternity and not just the 1% of the time you spend walking somebody through the Romans Road, you are fully alive and fully alive people attract the lost like honey attracts bees.”

Coaching this week: 42:12

We are wrapping up our Clarity Questions for 2023.  These questions are a bit more fun, but just as important as the last two weeks have been.  Pause and journal your answers to get the most out of this time.

1)  What are three words to describe the past year and why?

2)  What did I learn about myself this year?

3)  Were there any risks I avoided out of fear?

4)  If you could travel back to the beginning of the year, what advice or encouragement would you tell yourself?

5)  What would your 90-year-old self advise you to pursue right now?

16 May 2022How to Be a Difference Maker with Kyle Idelman00:46:13

How does God want to use you to have an impact? If this question has ever crossed your mind, today’s episode is for you, friend!

I am super excited to share this recent conversation I had with Kyle Idelman as he talks to us about the Jesus way of changing the world--loving people one at a time.

Most of us don't want to spend our lives being time-wasters, space-takers, binge-watchers, or game-players. We want to be difference-makers. Kyle does an amazing job in giving us practical ways we can do that in our everyday lives.

Kyle Idleman is a bestselling author and the senior pastor at Southeast Christian Church in Louisville, Kentucky, one of the largest churches in America. He’s most widely known for his award-winning book, not a fan., which has sold more than 1.3 million copies and has sparked a movement among believers. Kyle has authored other books, including One at a Time, The End of Me, gods at war, Grace Is Greater, and Don’t Give Up. Kyle and his wife DesiRae have four children and live on a farm where he does no farming.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • The profound impact and influence we can have in the lives of others and the best way to go about it.
  • How the use of the two words “Jesus saw” preceded some of the most amazing stories of transformed lives..
  • The bystander effect, how it keeps people from making an impact in the lives of others, and some practical steps to begin making a difference today.

Favorite quotes:

~ We tend to define influence or influencer to describe someone who has a certain amount of social media following. While that has impact and influence, the most profound influence we can have is almost always one person at a time.

~ When Jesus loves people one at a time it begins with His eyes, it begins with what HE saw. One of the things I really would challenge people about is to pray a simple prayer of “ Jesus help me to see people the way you see them,  give me eyes for the one”.

~ One of the most important pieces is availability, is just saying    “OK ,I’ll do it, I am available” - That, saying Yes to God and being available to God is a big piece of this and is certainly  consistent in how God calls people throughout the Old and New Testament - He invites but we have to be available and have a willingness to do it.

~ Jesus talked about if you want to be great then you become the servant of all, you make yourself less. Greatness is not defined by attention, it is defined by servanthood.

In this episode I answered this question:

  1. What are some small changes I can make to feel happier everyday? (32:47)

28 Jun 2021Hannah Brencher joins us for Smart Girl Summer00:46:40

Hey hey friends! I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “Hot Girl Summer,” but around here, we’re having Smart Girl Summer.

Smart Girl Summer is an eight week series featuring some of my most brilliant friends sharing behind-the-scenes stories that you won’t hear anywhere else. And we’re kicking it off with Hannah Brencher!

Hannah is a best-selling author, speaker, and entrepreneur, and y’all have loved her episodes in the past. She is such a breath of fresh air when it comes to running a business, staying creative, and embracing God’s plan for her life.

We dive into how she got her start, the lessons she learned from passion projects that didn’t go as planned, how she manages imposter syndrome, and what she does when she feels herself beginning to play the comparison game.

Listen in as we discuss:

  • The freedom that comes with giving yourself permission to try new things (and not be great at them!).
  • How we handle the reactions of church friends when they find out our husbands are both full-time Dads while each of us are the breadwinners for our families.
  • What a good workflow looks like, and how they can help you reach the goals you set for yourself.

Favorite quotes:

1. I don’t want people to be spectators in the lives of other people. I want them to be fully in their lives. 2. I spent so many years being so scared that I wasn’t in the calling of God. And then I realized that's not how it works. Go out there, experiment, have fun with things. I would have never known that I could be an entrepreneur if I didn’t give myself that permission. 3. Just because it’s been done this one way 1000 times before, doesn’t mean that it’s what you have to do.

4. Make sure you finish things as well as you start them. Don’t let the momentum keep you from doing a good job from all angles.

5. Do the thing that scares you.

6. Invest in the craft instead of the applause.

Great things we discussed:

1. Hannah Brencher Creative .com 2. Monday Club

3. Cocokind 4. In The Heights

28 Dec 2020Rejection, FOMO, and Living Loved from Fierce Faith00:34:48

Friends, we made it to the end of 2020! Can you believe it?! At times, I didn’t think we’d get here, but here we are. And for some of us, we’ve been holding on to this expectation that if we just make it to the end of the year, things will get better. Our problems will go away. We’ll know how to better cope with suffering. The overwhelming amount of pain and trauma we’ve experienced will finally be in the past.

That expectation is lovely in theory, but really, it’s unnamed fear.

I don’t want you to head into the next week, the next month or the next year holding on to unnamed fears. When we do this, we’re saying we’d rather sit on the sidelines. That’s why I wanted to read Chapter 4 of my book Fierce Faith on the show today.

In “What If They Don’t Like Me?,” I share my own personal stories of rejection, and more importantly, how fear of rejection impacted my life. It’s not something we talk about often, fear of rejection, but it lingers in everything we do. Whether or not we post that picture of our accomplishment on Instagram. If we tell our partner about our new business idea. How we share something personal with a new friend.

I hope this chapter gives you a starting place to embrace 2021 with hope and confidence.

We break down:

1. How rejection causes us to overgeneralize and view the world from a place of hurt

2. The way Jesus dealt with rejection from his friends, disciples, and including his outcry to His own father.

3. What practical tools we can use to develop a battle plan for overcoming our fear of rejection and live a joy-filled life.

We talk about his random train rides to Baton Rouge, his aversion to UT orange, and what he's learning in quarantine (important stuff, like, where to buy a Star Wars mask).

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. Do you have a Bible reading plan that you recommend? (47:38)

20 Sep 2021Finding Hope and Healing with Sheila Walsh00:37:48

For over 18 months, we have been learning how to cope with the pandemic. Some of us focus on our families, and some of us watch disaster movies (or The Great British Baking Show!). But the uncertainty and the overwhelming level of sad and disappointing news has caused cases of depression and anxiety to accelerate at alarming levels.

The temptation to give up is real, which is why I’m so honored to have my friend Sheila Walsh on the show today for a very special conversation about mental health.

Sheila is an author, Bible teacher, and television host and, fun fact: she’s originally from Scotland! In this episode, she shares with us her mental health journey with clinical depression and the practical actionable steps we can take to manage this hard season. She also shares about her book, Holding on When You Want to Let Go, and what she learned as she managed her depression during the isolation of the pandemic.

Tune in to learn more about:

  1. How to best support loved ones when they’re experiencing a difficult season
  2. How the church is responding to conversations about mental health and challenging the stigma of shame around struggle
  3. How God hears and holds us even when we don’t have all the right words in prayer
  4. How you can incorporate Sheila’s daily practices to help with depression

13 May 2024The Surprising Benefits of Writing Your Story with Ally Fallon00:36:29

I’m thrilled to have you join us in this episode as we dive into the powerful world of storytelling with my dear friend, Ally Fallon. Today, Ally will share some incredible insights into the emotional health benefits of writing our own stories. She’s here to guide us through the process of getting started and tapping into the transformative power of putting our experiences down on paper.

Ally Fallon isn't just any guest; she's an accomplished author, speaker, and the founder of Find Your Voice—a community dedicated to helping people express themselves through writing. With her extensive background, including ghostwriting 11 books and authoring impactful works like The Power of Writing It Down and Indestructible, Ally brings a wealth of knowledge to the table. Her latest book, Write Your Story, introduces an 8-step framework that helps anyone craft a meaningful and captivating narrative. Join us as we explore why writing matters, the unexpected benefits it holds for our spiritual, emotional, and physical health, and how you can start making yourself the hero of your own story, even if you've never written a word before.

Join Ally and I as we talk about:

  • Why writing our story matters

  • Surprising spiritual, emotional, and health benefits to writing our story

  • Where to start if you have never written before

  • Making yourself the hero of your story

  • How to write compelling hooks

Favorite quotes:

  • (5:17 Audio) “The main reason writing our story matters is that the act of putting our story on paper teaches us who we are, what our life is about, what we are here for, why we matter, what makes our life so significant, and what is the most interesting thing about us. Beyond that, when we share that story it also allows us to connect with other people who are in our lives.”

  • (13:37 Audio) “It is really so powerful when you start to put your story down on the page. You just see it in another way.”

  • (15:33 Audio) “Every story is interesting if it’s told in the right way.”

  • (17:03 Audio) “When you know how to write a great hook, you know how to command human attention, and when you can command human attention, you can give people information that is really important to them.”

  • (20:45 Audio) “We have a lot more agency in resolving our stories than we think we do because most personal stories resolve when the internal problem resolves rather than the external problem.”

Coaching this week: How to Quit Letting Guilt Weigh You Down

In coaching on this episode, I highlight the importance of using feelings of guilt as a gateway to deeper self-reflection, suggesting that these emotions can reveal significant underlying issues, like past unresolved experiences or current unmet needs. I encourage you to engage with guilt, using it as an opportunity to understand and address the root causes, which will ultimately help you find resolution and peace.

05 Jul 2021Smart Girl Summer with Kelli Masters00:44:03

We’re continuing our Smart Girl Summer Series this week with another fantastic guest that will inspire you (and maybe even help you out at the next sports trivia night!). Now, as a reminder, Smart Girl Summer is an eight-week series featuring some of my most brilliant friends sharing behind-the-scenes stories that you won’t hear anywhere else.

And today, we have the brilliant and business-savvy Kelli Masters on the show today! Kelli is an attorney, a certified sports agent, and the founder of KMM Sports, a full-service sports management company based in Oklahoma City. AND, fun fact: she was one of the first women to represent a Top 5 pick in the NFL draft!

She has represented more professional athletes than any other woman in the sports business history and was named one of the 25 most influential women in sports worldwide by Bleacher Report. Needless to say, Kelli knows a thing or two about business, sports, and remaining true to yourself against all odds.

We sit down to chat about Kelli’s experience working in a male-dominated field, what her faith in God means to her, and some of the lessons she has learned along the way. Plus, she shares some good advice for the next generation of trailblazing women.

Listen in to learn more about -

  1. How Kelli got to be where she is and how she found her calling to be a sports agent.
  2. How to be fierce without being aggressive or unkind.
  3. The inside scoop of being a sports agent and what Kelli has on her radar next.

Favorite quotes:

1. It’s funny how those of us who try to map out what we think our life is going to look like and we fly and make all these plans. But truly, when you trust God with that and put it in his hands, it doesn't look linear at all. 2. Being fierce doesn't come from me being egotistical or or overly confident. It comes from knowing God has called me to do this. He has given me the skills to do this. And he's given me the passion and the ability to fight for my clients, to fight for the people that I've been given to fight for and there's nothing more powerful. 3. Isn't it so easy to beat yourself up for where you're not?

4. What we've created is so different and so special. And it's 100% because I just said, “God, I want to do it your way and I don't want to do it my way.” I don't want to just look successful. I want to make an impact and create successful opportunities and lives for the players that I get the chance to work with.

5. It's interesting how you can spend so much time working on the details of something when God's like- no trust me over here. Just keep being good to people. Keep listening to me. Keep being kind to people. And I'll come through for you.

Great things we discussed:

1. Kelli Masters 2. KMM Sports

3. High Impact Life 4. Rose Toronto Skincare 5. Quiet Place 2 6. 96,000

2. How tragedy can turn to purpose

3. How God uses our unfulfilled career ambition

Favorite quotes:

1. I decided that if I was going to live, I was going to figure out why and what I had been put on this earth to do and who I was because there had to be more than this. There just had to be. Surely I wasn’t a wasted life. Surely he didn’t create me to put me on earth so I can have heartbreak and die. Surely there was more. I started to search. I started to search who I was and what I was meant to do and that changed my life forever.

2. My purpose isn’t to be popular. My purpose is to be influential. I wanna be a person of influence and I wanna help people find who they are.

3. Anytime we say ‘Here I am Lord, send me,’ in whatever way that looks, he freaking takes us up on it so be careful.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. Should I let my son play with toy guns? My husband says yes, I’m not so sure. (1:05:23)

09 Nov 2020The magic of awe and wonder with Harris III01:02:07

Have you lost your childlike imagination? Do you still find wonder in the world or are you more cynical than ever?

My guest today is the incredible illusionist, storyteller, and author Harris III! Harris and I have a fascinating conversation today about the concept of wonder and why awe is vital for thriving in life. Harris shares how to reawaken child-like wonder, how awe impacts our physical and mental health in a powerful way, and why it's important to find magic in the mundane.

We also chat about:

-How gratitude can reawaken the magic in our life

-The "special" lie and why we need to debunk it

-And how to find our greatest purpose out of our deepest pain

Favorite quotes:

What I understand of wonder is that it's contagious. Their wonder and response to that first magic trick reawakened my wonder, turned on the wonder switch and gave me permission to start dreaming of this whole new possible life

Wonder is this really essential process. It’s this state that we can get back to that gives us permission to believe.

The presence of awe and wonder can boost the production of cytokines in your body. It can boost your immune system, it can decrease stress.

There’s magic in the mundane. There’s beauty right in front of our faces, we just can’t see it.

You can live an extraordinary life, just like anyone else you admire, if you understand the fact that we are all special. Contained within us all is this magic and the ability to do extraordinary things.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. Do you ever feel extra pressure to not feel busy or worried or unhappy because you write books on how to overcome it? How do you balance what you teach? (48:51)

2. How can I help my kids develop their own faith and not just depend on my faith? (51:48)

3. How do you know when it's the right time to quit your job and go all in on running your own business? (55:41)

Great things we discussed:

1. www.harrisiii.com 2. The Wonder Switch

3. STORY Gatherings

4. Forrest Gump Soundtrack 5. Atomic Habits 6. Ecamm 7. Honest Thief 8. Highest Praise

03 Apr 2023How to Transform Your Relationships with Three Little Words with Mark Batterson00:43:00

Hey hey! We all want to live and work in happy, healthy spaces, but how do we create them? How do we build a culture where people enjoy being together and working together?

Those are big questions, but what if I told you it all starts with three little words we all learned as kids?

I chat with pastor and author Mark Batterson about these concepts from his new book, Please, Sorry, Thanks: The Three Words That Change Everything. Mark and I talk about how those words- please, sorry, thanks- set the tone in the places we lead.

Join in on this conversation as we discuss:

  • What Mark calls “the crown jewel” of emotional intelligence

  • Why vulnerability is so critical, especially for leaders

  • One of the hardest lessons Mark learned in leadership

  • Two rules of life for leaders that will change how you see people

  • How gratitude can change your life, and why it is so vital for your soul

Mark blesses us with wisdom every time he visits. Last year, Mark shared how we  have to 3-M our habits. We have to make them measurable, we have to make them meaningful, and we have to make them maintainable. Catch that episode here!

Mark Batterson serves as lead pastor of National Community Church and is the author of over 20 books, including his latest, Please, Sorry, Thanks: The Three Words That Change Everything. Mark and his wife, Lora, have three children and live in Washington, D.C.

Favorite quotes:

~~“When it comes to creating culture or a happy healthy family system or just a place you want to work, those cultures are really good at please, sorry, and thanks.”

~~“Nothing opens doors like a please. Nothing mends fences like a sorry. Nothing builds bridges like a thanks. More than words, they have to become a lifestyle.”

~~“In all relationships you have to get really good at sorry because you are going to have to reset all the time.”

~~“Whatever you don’t turn into praise turns into pride so we have to get really good at giving thanks.”

~~“You don’t see the world as it is. You see the world as you are and if you are filled with gratitude you are going to find things every single day that you can be grateful for even if it is a tough day.”

22 Apr 2019Mandy Arioto on learning to have more fun, making the audacious asks, and loving the stage you are in00:53:30

I’m with the wonderful Mandy Arioto, the CEO of MOPS International. Mandy shares about her latest book Have More Fun and the journey that took her from an achievement driven life to a life of richness and enjoyment. Mandy also shares why she painted a soldier pink and why we should muster up one audacious "ask" a week.

In this episode we discuss:

1. Why we all need to learn to have more fun

2. The difference between fake fun and real fun

3. A key to learning to have more fun as a mom

Favorite quotes:

1. Isn’t that kinda how our lives work? It’s like taking that next step, saying yes and having no clue where that will take us but it will always turn out in remarkable ways.

2. What I recognize over the course of choosing to have more fun is that one of the most important things I can do as a parent is to enjoy my kids and to really embrace all the nuances in any given season they are in.

3. A really essential part of me being a more fun mom was loving whatever stage we were in.

4. When we’re not afraid to ask, door open for us that never would have before.

5. I think it’s really important to differentiate between fake fun and real fun because real fun restores our body, rejuvenates our soul and fake fun really depletes our reserves.

6. We really need to differentiate for ourselves and determine what do we enjoy.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. I have terrible social anxiety. Can you help me feel more confident around others?  (38:49)

2. If someone wanted to start reading the bible for personal growth, where would you have them start? (46:00)

3. How do I balance the work I need to do now with my creative dreams for future projects? (48:28)

04 Mar 2024How Your Boundaries Can Lead to Blessings with Sara Hagerty00:36:41

Welcome to the show today! I am so happy you are here. We are in our “Living Well” series talking about all aspects of living well, and staying emotionally and spiritually healthy, no matter what craziness the world serves up.

Today Sarah Hagerty is joining us to talk about the unexpected gift of limitations. Now you know me, Enneagram seven, more is always better, but I feel this topic, the gift of our limitations so deeply because it's how God develops us so often and how he points us to where he wants us to focus in life. Sarah is absolutely brilliant and you are going to love her.

Sara Hagerty is a bestselling author and Jesus follower. She has written four books, including her most recent release, The Gift of Limitations: Finding Beauty in Your Boundaries

As a writer, speaker, and mother of seven, Sara Hagerty knows what limitations feel like. Yet she has also seen how the boundaries of our life circumstances can bring about growth and satisfaction we'd never experience otherwise.

Join Sara and I as we talk about:

  • How our limitations can be blessings

  • Identifying and grieving our limitations

  • How to surrender to our limitations in a healthy way

  • The effects of social media on our emotional health

  • How to live in the boundaries God has given us in a healthy way

Favorite quotes:

7:10: “Comparison puts us constantly noticing our limitations against someone else who doesn’t have them.”

8:39: “There are all different flavors that women experience, but the reality is every day we wake up to our limitations.”

11:03: “We often don’t actually name our limitations, so there is an ache underneath our limits that needs to be grieved with God. But we live at such a surface level where we don’t name our limits, so we can’t grieve them. “

14:11: “There is something significant about noticing ourselves because then we can actually have something we can bring to God.”

23:29: “The “sigh of life” is surrender and a sigh that comes after the grief of our limitations.”

08 Mar 2021Transforming Your Marriage (Not Your Spouse!) with Toni Nieuwhof00:48:48

Our marriage mini-series continues this week with a question we’ve all likely asked ourselves at some point in our lives: wouldn’t I be better off alone? It’s a question that creeps up on us in moments where we feel stuck, overwhelmed and disconnected from the person that matters most.

This week, Toni Nieuwhof joins me on the show to talk about those moments of doubt, guilt and worry that affect our relationships. She has worked with hundreds of families over the years, often as a divorce attorney, and she tells us what she’s learned from those difficult experiences along with the important lessons she and her husband, Carey, have learned as they took their own marriage from unhappy to thriving.

In today’s episode, Toni shares research-driven data, real-life examples and practical tools to transform struggling relationships into healthy, safe spaces. We also chat about her book, Before You Split: Find What You Really Want for the Future of Your Marriage, and she gives her best advice for fighting for the couple instead of yourself and how the light of Christ can help us identify self-limiting beliefs.

Some of my favorite moments from our conversation include:

1. The 5:1 ratio and its importance in our interactions with our spouse, significant others, and even our children.

2. How kindness and respect are essential pillars of the family space and how we can use them to change our family dynamic.

3. How our reliance on God and those we’re in relationship with can help us become fully alive.

Favorite quotes:

1. Sometimes looking inside is scary. Or it feels painful. And yeah, there's some pain to go through, but if you can sit with it and not back away, and just move through that pain, there's just something so beautiful on the other side. 2. The victim story you may be telling yourself is probably blurring your vision.

3. We had to come to the point where we could realize that the only emotions we can really try to influence or control are our own.

4. Just sit with your spouse's emotions and validate them, and accept them for what they are.

5. It's really hard when you're in the midst of the struggle to recognize just how much value your spouse has in the eyes of your child. Your child needs both of you.

Great things we discussed:

21 Nov 2022How to Be Brave Enough to Be Broken with Toni Collier00:41:11

Welcome back, friend! I am so glad you are joining me for today’s conversation with speaker and author Toni Collier. We dive right into our discussion of hurt, hope, and healing.

Be sure to listen in as we discuss trauma, abuse, childhood wounds, and toxic relationships that have broken us and how there is no shame in brokenness. It’s in our brokenness that the healing power of Jesus comes to find us. This is such a powerful episode, friend.

Toni Collier is the founder of an international women’s organization, Broken Crayons Still Color, which helps women process brokenness and find hope. She is a Speaker, Host, Author of Brave Enough to be Broken, and consultant that has helped organizations with creative marketing, leadership, student ministry, and strategic planning. Toni is teaching people all over the globe that you can be broken and worthy and unqualified and still called to do great things. She doesn’t want you to just face your demons; she wants you to quash the illusion of your brokenness so you can live the most colorful life possible, on and off stage. Toni is the wife of Sam and a mom of two living in Atlanta.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • What it looks like to intentionally build community and how to develop and maintain friend circles
  • How to identify a space, relationship, or workplace that is toxic and building healthy boundaries to protect yourself from that
  • The value of accessing your core lie and learning to speak truth to it.

Favorite quotes:

~ Hurt and hope can co-exist. That we can be going through things and we can be doing our best to survive those things but we can also have the capacity to put up a front.

~ Jesus had circles too and when we get intentional about how we structure friendship circles we can ultimately live healthier lives.

~ We have to become aware of what we need. Some of the reason why we get into toxic environments is because there is a toxic part of us that craves it and it becomes a magnet.

~ We should be curious, not condemning. We are not good about being curious about helping people.

In this episode I answered this question:

  1. How do you handle chores with all your boys? (33:27)

30 Oct 2023How to Use the Enneagram to Get Emotionally Healthy with Bill and Kristi Gaultiere00:33:15

Is the Enneagram just another personality test trend, or is it a truly helpful tool? Is it okay for Christians to use the Enneagram? Why are so many people afraid of using the Enneagram?

Whether you love the Enneagram or are skeptical, stick around, because Drs. Bill and Kristi Gaultiere are here to help us process and move towards emotional health!

Bill is a psychologist, Kristi is a marriage and family therapist, and together, they have counseled and ministered to people for thirty years. In 2009, they co-founded Shepherding the Soul, a nonprofit ministry that helps people discover and take their next steps toward Jesus, emotional health, and loving relationships.

Bill and Kristi’s newest book, Healthy Feelings, Thriving Faith: Growing Emotionally and Spiritually through the Enneagram, is a roadmap to help us go from knowing our personality type to growing in wholeness, health, and love.

Lean in and listen as Bill, Kristi, and I discuss:

  • Why people of faith are often resistant when it comes to doing emotional work

  • How to tell the difference between healthy and unhealthy selfishness

  • Using the Enneagram as a discipleship tool

  • Two things that lead to change (and how one of those pulls us towards being more like Jesus)

  • The difference between caretaking and people-pleasing

Favorite quotes:

  • “Our emotions influence our faith.”
  • “Emotions are valuable and God given.”
  • “The healthier we are in ourselves, the healthier our faith can be.”
  • “Jesus is the perfection of each of the Enneagram types.”
  • “There are two things that lead to change - pain pushers or vision pulls.”
  • “The Enneagram is helping us get under the surface into some stuff that is broken, painful, and unhealthy that we need to look at.”

01 Aug 2022How to Build Things That Matter with Annie F. Downs00:50:04

Hey friends! It’s the last week of our Smart Girl Summer series… I sure hope you have enjoyed it as much as I have! I am thrilled to have Annie F. Downs on the show today. I’m absolutely convinced that the world needs more fun and laughter, and Annie brings both wherever she goes!

In this conversation, we talk about business, marketing, podcasting, friendships, failures, and even how to chase the fun in life! You definitely don’t want to miss how we bonded over the importance of having a solid mission statement to keep us focused. Plus, Annie candidly shares how her understanding that God has called her to build something that will bring light keeps her motivated and pushing forward in all seasons.

Annie F. Downs is a New York Times bestselling author, sought-after speaker, and successful podcast host based in Nashville, Tennessee. Founder of the That Sounds Fun Network—which includes her aptly named flagship show, That Sounds Fun—and author of multiple bestselling books, Annie shoots straight and doesn’t shy away from the tough topics. But she always finds her way back to the truth that God is good and that life is a gift.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • How “knowing your lane” in your business or ministry is the absolute BEST way to manage imposter syndrome and comparison.
  • Debunking the myth that just because someone has a bit of success, everything magically turned golden for them. 100% not true, by the way!
  • How Annie views failures. Here’s a hint, she believes everything is an experiment and an opportunity to ask, “So, what’s next?!”

Favorite quotes:

~It’s a little easier to cheer for everyone who’s in their lane when we are sure of our lane. I need to see my mission statement everyday so I know MY lane and don’t compare myself to other people and I don’t live and die by the applause of the internet.

~The reality is that  nothing is a total flop or a failure. Everything is an experiment that you pivot as you build, so sometimes, you stop building the building if you don’t want to put energy into it anymore; or if the return on the investment is not matching the investment.

~If you don’t know why you are doing what you are doing when you get put in a fire, you will jump out.

~What keeps me doing this is that I really think God put me on the planet to do the thing I’m doing right now.

~What keeps me motivated is that I believe God’s really called us to bring light to the dark places.

~My biggest piece of advice is to start paying people to help you before you have the money to pay them; if it means giving away a little piece of equity or paying them hourly.

~We pray for wisdom and the mind of Christ everyday, that’s how you are going to make decisions you do not know how to make.

04 Dec 2023How to Build the Right Friendships00:42:35

Hey hey! Healthy good friendships are so important in a mother’s life and their children's lives.

Today’s show is a special one, featuring the friendship chapter from my newest book, Remaining You While Raising Them: The Secret Art of Confident Motherhood.

The research kept showing that the right friendships were important in a mother’s life. Studies even showed that children in their developing years had better levels of child development if their moms had a good two or three friends for support systems and great socialization. So this is not something we have the luxury to ignore.

I wrote Remaining You While Raising Them to help women find freedom from the heavy weight of modern motherhood. I can’t give you a step-by-step plan to raise perfect children (an impossible dream!), but I can help you thrive as a happier, healthier mom, and friendship is a big part of that.

Listen in on these audio chapters to hear:

  • Green and red flags to watch for in friendships

  • The power of friendship in our lives

  • How to use social media to actually make us feel better

  • 3 habits for healthy friendships

Favorite quotes:

  • “Those little dreams that God plants in our hearts that seem impossible over time when we keep taking little steps with that power of 1%, we can reach our dreams.”
  • “Friendships make us happier than any other kind of relationship.”
  • “Mom friendships benefit our kids. We’ve seen over and over that investing in our emotional health helps our children grow to be better adjusted, have healthier relationships, and be more successful in life.”
  • “Social media can be a valuable tool for helping us feel connected, but it also has the capacity to make us feel lonelier if we don’t use it intentionally to build connections.”
  • “Healthy, loving friendships are a gift from God. They are a key part of a happier life and a healthier mindset.”
  • “Friendships that are flexible, fun, and fulfilling are one of the best gifts you can give to yourself and your children.”

31 Oct 2022How to Find the Best of You with Alison Cook, PhD00:44:08

Hey hey! Do you ever struggle with caring for family, friends, and co-workers without pushing your own needs to the back burner? Well, friend, you are precisely in the right place today!

My friend Dr. Alison Cook joins me on the show to talk about her most recent book, The Best of You, which helps us find our true selves while in relationship with God, other people, and ourselves.

During our conversation, Alison teaches us how to find our best and most authentic versions of ourselves in a way that allows us to show up for ourselves before we show up for others. Also, she details some of the ways childhood wounds, confusing church messages, and cultural conditioning toward women and their wants have kept women stuck, overwhelmed, and defeated.

Dr. Alison Cook is a psychologist and the author of two books, including her new book, The Best of You and Boundaries for Your Soul. For 20 years, Alison has empowered women to heal from past wounds, develop a strong sense of self, forge healthy relationships with others, and experience a loving God who is for them. Her weekly email and podcast reach more than 70,000 people. She specializes in bringing faith and psychology together to create real change in people's lives. Alison and her husband, Joe, are the parents of two adult children. They are based out of Boston and spend time in the mountains of Wyoming as often as possible.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • How Christian women internalize an unhealthy message of putting our needs and wants last (and how we can work to reverse it!)
  • How to identify the differences between selfishness, selflessness, and selfhood.
  • The signs that we have given up on ourselves and how to rediscover our voice.

Favorite quotes:

~We think of Jesus' words “Love others as yourself.” There is an assumption there that there is a you that is showing up; that you know who that you is that  you are  bringing into relationships but a lot of women don’t understand or don’t feel like they have permission to do that work.

~When I hide myself, when I make myself invisible, when I play like a doormat, it’s not just bad for me , but I’m not bringing the best of who I am to the people I love.

~When I’m really being my true self , when I’m aligned with myself, I’m empowering  other people which is what helps them heal and become who they really need to be.

~We are worth so much more than just numbing through all the various ways we can check out ; God wants so much more for us.

17 Oct 2022How to Be Good & Kind with Rich Villodas00:42:59

Hey there everyone! Today’s episode is packed with wisdom and grace, and I just know you’re going to love this conversation with pastor, author, and speaker Rich Villodas. We talk about how we can truly become whole in a broken and fractured world.

Listen in as Rich invites us to ask ourselves two questions:

1. How did we lose goodness, kindness, and beauty?

2. More importantly, how do we get them back into our lives?

The answers to both are especially valuable as we live in our walled-up and often hostile world.

Rich Villodas is the Brooklyn-born lead pastor of New Life Fellowship, a large multiracial church with more than seventy-five countries represented in Elmhurst, Queens. He enjoys reading widely, preaching, and writing on contemplative spirituality, justice-related matters, and the art of preaching. He's been married to Rosie since 2006, and they have two beautiful children, Karis and Nathan.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • The five questions we can ask ourselves whenever we experience anxiety to protect both our emotional health and our relationships with others.
  • Ways to cultivate a calm and loving presence in the middle of an anxious culture.
  • Contemplative prayer and why it is important in our lives.

Favorite quotes:

At its core, sin is failure to love. If Jesus says that the greatest commandment is  to love God with your heart, soul, mind and strength and to love your neighbor as yourself, then the essence of  sin must be the violation of that.

A calm and loving presence is a presence that is not driven by your action or reaction. It’s a life that moves beyond emotionality and reactionality.

Contemplative prayer, at its core, is being present in the presence of God. It is friendship with Jesus.

The fruit of contemplative prayer is not simply greater self awareness or self actualization or religious goose bumps, it is how can I be more lovingly present with people. It begins with us befriending silence, normalizing  boredom and reframing distractions.

In this episode I answered this question:

  1. How do we view happiness in a positive way? How do I pursue happiness without harm? (32:50)

09 Dec 2019Beth McCord, Your Enneagram Coach, on how to use the Enneagram for a healthier and happier marriage01:01:52

One of my most popular guests is back: Beth McCord of Your Enneagram Coach! Today, we are talking about is the Enneagram and your marriage.

We'll chat about how to use the Enneagram for insight into your spouse's perspective, needs, and triggers as well as how to keep turning back to the gospel for our core needs.

In this episode we discuss:

1. How Christians should view the Enneagram.

2. The new Enneagram Instagram account you can't miss

3. How to use the Enneagram for healthier conflict in marriage

Favorite quotes:

1. Understanding one another allows us to have those conversations that are more purposeful and meaningful. It averts conflict and hurting the relationship where it doesn’t need to be.

2. Conflict is not in and of itself isn’t bad. People are going to have different views and desires but it’s how we deal with that conflict that really matters. We all come from different vantage points and perspectives and if we can validate and understand one another then we can work through those conflicts. We can come together and that’s where we can really honor God.

3. The Enneagram, think of it as just a flashlight or an x-ray. It pointing out what’s there or what’s broken like a bone. But the x-ray cannot heal you, it just exposes what’s wrong and what needs healing. The Enneagram is pointing out why we do what we do, our heart condition, and then the gospel shows how to heal it.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. What did you do for all the birthday parties when your kids were little? (45:27)

2. What do you do when you don’t want to do what God tells you to do? (49:30)

3. How do you know when it’s time to hire employees? I just started a small business and I want to make a plan. (57:02)

27 Jul 2020Laughter, calling, and wild monkeys with Sophie Hudson01:04:15

Get ready to laugh today! No one brings the belly laughs like my friend Sophie Hudson  and today we cover a lot of ground; her trip to Kenya, her book writing process, and how monkeys with spicy pistachios sparked her last book idea.

Sophie shares what her latest book meant to her as an Enneagram 9- trying to stand up more in life. We also explore how she felt like a late bloomer in the publishing world and why she's glad she didn't release her first book until she was in her 50s.

We also chat about:

-Why woman need to prioritize the creative process on their to-do lists

-The products that make us feel like old women, but are FABULOUS

-The hilarious reason she was drooling during our call and the facial problem her jade roller couldn't fix

We even discuss what investment you need in the bedroom. (Just wait for it!)

Favorite quotes:

1. Initially, we may have things that we want to burn it down but really what we want is some fresh fire to help however we’re meant to help usher in the kingdom

2. I think that’s something else that’s hard for women is to be kind to ourselves because you really can’t do everything. You really can’t, not all at one time. Something is always going to get the short end of the stick.

For coaching time, I’m answering this question-

26 Jun 2023How to Love our Bodies with Alisa Keeton00:38:00

Hey there! As the season of swimsuits and shorts, summer can bring up all kinds of feelings about our bodies. Women can feel afraid (or even ashamed) to talk about it. Today, we’re going there, and I’ve brought in a good friend for this special Smart Girl Summer episode to help us!

Alisa Keeton is the founder of Revelation Wellness, and she is on a mission to help women love God, get healthy, be whole, and love others.

Alisa is also an author, and her new book, The Body Revelation: Physical and Spiritual Practices to Metabolize Pain, Banish Shame, and Connect to God with Your Whole Self, is a tool to help women do just that.

Listen in our conversation as Alisa and I discuss:

  • Why we are prone to extremes when it comes to our bodies

  • How getting healthy and being whole impacts how we love God and others

  • The point in a new venture when most women quit (and why they shouldn’t give up!)

  • How trauma affects our physical bodies, and why downplaying it is so detrimental

  • The prayer you should pray if you’re not sure if your idea is your own or from the Lord

Favorite quotes:

  • “Your body has been designed by God. There is nothing about you that genetically is flawed.  He is on purpose with a purpose. Every body is a good body.”
  • “Love God. Get healthy, be whole. Love others.”
  • “I don’t think you need to be polite with Jesus. You have to be real with him and never let go.”
  • “Before you had words for life to explain and have a worldview, your body was trying to tell you things and it has always been trying to tell you stuff.”
  • “Before you go ask your friends or all the people you think you need their approval, sit down with the Lord. Take a day, pull away, go away, turn your phone off, and get in the Word and hear from Him. Once you have heard from Him, there’s no turning back.”
  • “You know it is the Lord if you don’t stop thinking about it. It keeps coming up.”

07 Mar 2022How to live with hope and more happiness with Nicole Zasowski00:42:47

What if hope only leads to disappointment? If this question has ever crossed your mind, today’s episode is for you, friend!

My new friend, Nicole Zasowski, is on the show today and, let me tell you, she is a breath of fresh air. She shares her perspective with us on toxic positivity, celebration, and hope. And she’s a therapist, so her perspective is particularly welcome today!

Nicole and I take a deep dive into why we are afraid to feel joy and what we can do about it.  For so many of us, we skip our celebrations as a way to avoid touching someone else's pain. We also talk about her latest book, What If It’s Wonderful?, and the importance of everyday celebrations.

I’m so inspired by Nicole’s insights and honesty about our hesitations and the way she illuminates a path to less fear and more happiness. Our conversation reminds us how God wants us to be joyful and happy.

Nicole is a mom, wife, licensed marriage therapist, and From Lost to Found author. She enjoys writing and speaking on topics that merge her professional knowledge, faith, and personal experience.

Listen in to learn more about:

  • Toxic positivity and how it impacts us
  • Foreboding joy and how joy can be vulnerable
  • Practical ways we can celebrate in our everyday lives and why we should.

Favorite quotes:

Joy is not off limits to us in pain and what it does is that it trusts what’s possible with God in the midst of pain.

Joy and celebration have to be avenues of not only experiencing God’s presence, but learning and growing too, even in the midst of pain.

Savoring celebrates the ordinary.

Thanksgiving is the expression of that gratitude and the way of sharing it and is a way of celebrating the gift with the Giver.

A celebratory life is making a beautiful life with God right where you are not the perfect circumstances.

We have somehow made happiness the hedonist version of joy.

10 Jan 2022How to Recognize a Toxic Relationship with Gary Thomas00:49:46

Hey Friends! My DMs and inbox have been full of questions lately about one specific topic  – toxic relationships, and ultimately, toxic people. How to deal with them. How to identify them. And how to safeguard yourself against them as a Christian.

So, I’m bringing back an episode from the archives with my friend Gary Thomas, where he talks in depth about toxicity, how to be in relationship with others, and how to break free of a toxic cycle.

I hope it’s helpful to you as we invest in our emotional and relational health together in 2022!

Listen in to learn more about:

1. The difference between a difficult relationship and a toxic one

2. Playing spiritual offense vs spiritual defense

3. Why it’s so important to break free from toxic cycles

Favorite quotes:

1. If somebody is trying to get you to stop being you or get you to stop doing what you are convinced God wants you to do- for you that person is toxic. It’s an attack on your being and an attack on your mission.

2. Jesus had such freedom to walk away and it wasn’t about failing or succeeding it was about the person just not receiving.

3. I walk away from toxic people not to go binge Netflix. I walk away to invest with reliable people. I walk away from toxic relationships into healthy relationships.

20 Apr 2020Jen Fulwiler on finding your blue flame, stand up comedy, and big family quarantine01:00:58

Today, I'm joined by my wonderful friend Jen Fulwiler and she's sharing the jaw-dropping story of how she started pursuing her dreams of writing and of stand up comedy.

She shares so many lessons from her journey that will inspire us to fall in love with our bomb moments, find the gifts that truly set us aflame, and stop seeing our life-giving passions as "extra work." Jen is so bold and brave and I'm so excited for the belly laughs and deep truths she's bringing us today.

We also chat about:

-How she became wildly popular in a certain country in Europe

-What is a "blue flame" passion and how do we find it?

-Why her new book cover is making everyone blush

Favorite quotes:

1. The defining thing about a blue flame is that it's not about you. It's about adding light and love to the world, but it fills you with energy when you use it.

2. I believe and continue to believe, to this day that using these gifts using my blue flame is a favor to my family. I feel like I did my kids and my family a favor by making space in my life for my writing work, which turned into my radio work, which turned into comedy.

3. One of the ways you get confirmation that this is the right path is that you have these little signal graces. These things that come together that are beyond coincidence. When it seems like God is clearing your path.

25 Sep 2023How to Take Care of Yourself- The Easy Way00:37:56

What is the secret to real self-care? How can we move from self-care to soul care?

If you’re feeling burned out or overwhelmed, or maybe you’re just going through the motions, this episode is for you!

Today’s show features one of my favorite chapters from my newest book, Remaining You While Raising Them: The Secret Art of Confident Motherhood, and it’s all about one magic question that will change how you care for yourself.

If you are not a mom or are not actively in your mothering years, I hope you’ll stick around! The magic question we are talking about today is something that will help you in every season of life.

Join me for this chapter to hear:

  • Why so many women struggle with what it looks like to take care of ourselves

  • One magic question you can ask to help you care for yourself in a practical way

  • A modification to the magic question if you find it hard to answer (most women do, especially at first!)

  • Six things to consider when you’re deciding if someone’s opinion has merit in your life

  • The permission slip you may need to have your needs met

Favorite quotes:

  • “Slacker parenting” was my tongue-in-cheek way of saying that parents have permission to focus on the majors, not the minors. Not every little thing has to be perfect.”
  • “We do not have to play by anyone else’s rules or live up to their expectations.”
  • “Our biggest issue is asking ourselves what we need.”
  • “As we mother our children, we need to learn to mother ourselves too.”
  • “My relationship with God is the most fulfilling thing in my life. My family brings me deep joy and happiness but my relationship with God gives my life meaning and purpose.”
  • “Asking “What do I need right now?” is a smart first step in getting your needs met.”
  • “The magic question will not only help you survive motherhood, it will also help you thrive in light of the promise that God sees your needs and supplies them.”

Coaching this week:

  1. How to shift your mindset for perspective and freedom. (28:23)

30 Dec 2019Special Breaking Busy episode: Identifying the signs of crazy busy and finding peace and purpose.00:42:26

HAPPY almost 2020! We're looking to a new year, a new decade--and it's a great time for a fresh start. What if we all started off with less stress, more joy, greater purpose, and a lower chance of burnout?

In this special episode, I'm sharing a free chapter from my book Breaking Busy! I'll share my personal story of how busy almost broke me...until I got (a literal) wakeup call....from my bra.

We'll take inventory, learn to recognize the red flags of busy, and get a game plan to go from a frazzled to full life.

I'm also giving away chapter one from Breaking Busy free today.

Quotes from this episode-

1. Contrary to what many of us have been told, we all have limits. We can't handle it all, nor should we. We have to stop pretending we are superhuman with an endless supply of energy, because we aren't. Embracing our limits and respecting our personal capacity is the key to success and living out our calling.

2. Not taking care of ourselves works in the short run but it always spells disaster for everyone around us eventually. Taking care of ourselves means we’re willing to care for ourselves so we will be able to live out the calling on our lives. Self care is never selfish. You can’t live the life that God created for you if you’re running on fumes.

3. Having a limited physical capacity is not a flaw in my character, it is by glorious design for an incredible purpose to realize my need for him.

4. When God created us, he created us with limitless capacity to love others and a limitless ability to stretch our talents to be used for his glory.

5. We each have a different capacity level. Our levels increase and decrease, depending on our season and our situation. Identifying and respecting our own capacity is life changing and it's the first step to breaking busy.

If you love the message of Breaking Busy and want your own copy, you can grab one on Amazon on sale.

Happy New Year,

Alli

30 May 2022How to Move Forward When We are Divided with Sarah + Beth of Pantsuit Politics00:52:23

Is it possible to build a kinder society even while we’re stuck in conflict? Today’s episode couldn’t be more relevant than it is today.

Sarah and Beth of Pantsuit Politics  literally wrote a book to navigate this question! They join me to talk about their upcoming book, Now What? How to Move Forward When We’re Divided (About Basically Everything). Listen in as they share the one thing they want you to know — you are NOT alone if you find yourself tired of the anxiety, frustration, and fear that seem to be almost commonplace nowadays in your connections with other people, both online and in real life.

I don’t know about you, friend, but this feels like an important (and maybe long overdue) conversation for us to lean into given the cultural climate we find ourselves in right now.

Sarah Stewert Holland and Beth Silvers host Pantsuit Politics podcast featured in the New York Times, the Atlantic, and named by Apple Podcasts as one of the Best Shows of 2021. They are also the authors of I Think You’re Wrong (But I’m Listening): A Guide to Grace-Filled Political Conversation (2019).

Listen in to learn more about:

  • How our families of origin inform our views on politics and the ways we connect with others + reasons why this particular chapter of the book was written and rewritten multiple times.
  • Ways to have conversations about current events with the kids in our lives.
  • Navigating our differences in friendships + how being in connection does not mean being in agreement.

Favorite quotes:

~My faith informs less about my policy positions and more about the way I treat other people in the course of discussing politics.

~I hope that my faith builds in me a quiet but strong patience with other people and with myself. I hope that my faith makes room to change my mind when circumstances in  the world have changed because with politics we are often just talking about what we prioritize at the moment.

~Don’t think that because your political identity is not shared that  everything is broken.

~Something in what you absorbed from the people who raised you, the people who taught you what love means, the people who taught you what scarcity and fear mean - something connects to those bigger picture opinions and in our houses where we don’t have to make policy, we don’t have to all agree on who we have to vote for,  in our houses we can have much more deeper and interesting conversations with each other if we are willing to trace that thread back.

~Conflict can be a source of connection; it does not necessarily have to be a source of disconnection.

24 Jun 2019Jo Saxton on overcoming imposter syndrome, self-sabotage, and getting out of our own way00:58:43

I'm calling this "The Summer Of My Favorite Women" so it's only appropriate that I'm joined again by the marvelous Jo Saxton.

Today, Jo shares some tips for women who tend to self-sabotage and what to do when imposter syndrome strikes. She also shares about what she's currently dreaming to accomplish and why.

In this episode we discuss:

1. Why women tend to shrink back from leadership.

2. How to get out of your own way

3. How to surround yourself with the right people

Favorite quotes:

1. Just because it’s your vision, doesn’t mean other people have the eyes to see it and they don’t have to.

2. Virtual access is still better than no access at all and it can be the start of a different kind of mentoring, a different kind of illustration for how you can step into what you are called to do.

3. Some of our dreams and visions are ahead of the technology we have at the time.

4. One of the biggest life givers or life killers of your dreams, ideas, business -- the people you surround yourself with.

5. We are all people of influence and we don’t need to be afraid of it because leadership doesn’t automatically mean a certain personality type.

In this episode I answer these questions:

1. Could you give me just one tip that will make me a better communicator?  (43:16)

2. What’s the difference between religion and a relationship with Jesus? (43:44)

22 Jul 2019Lisa Whittle on pursuing work without guilt, work-life balance, and raising great kids without driving yourself crazy01:10:24

We are marching on with my "Summer Of Favorite Women"! Today, we are with the fabulous Lisa Whittle. I invited Lisa back on the show to talk about pursuing careers we love without guilt, balancing motherhood and entrepreneurship, and why your parenting doesn't have to be perfect to produce great children.

In this episode we discuss:

1. How to know when your work has become an idol

2. Finding work/life balance

3. How to mold your business mind with your ministry heart

Favorite quotes:

1. I appreciate other truth tellers in my life because I do think when you’re healthy and you’re operating by the control of the Holy Spirit (which has not always been the same for me by the way) but I think when that happens you can take it and you say I’m ready to hear what someone else has to say to me so I’m going to walk through this world boldly and speak bold things. I want someone to say that back to me because I know that I need to be told in the same manner.

2. (That encouragement) let me have this exhale of, “Well, yeah maybe I just really love what I’m doing. Gosh if God has gifted me to this area, He’s called me to this, I should live it.”

3. I think this season (teen years) of mothering is challenging for me and it’s amazing. I love it, it’s some ways my favorite. But I am dying to myself by kind of letting my own position go in many ways and releasing my kids to the world, believing we’ve done enough, and just praying.

4. I can’t really have a friendship where someone won’t be real and raw with me and that doesn’t mean I need them to tell them all their business, I just need the things we talk about, whether it be topics or whatever is going on, whatever we’re going to be talking about. I need you to be completely real with me about it.

24 Feb 2020Every parent needs this one! David Kinnaman on resilient faith, navigating digital Babylon, and how to parent in a way that builds faith in your kids.01:02:56

This may be the most important podcast I've ever aired. In this episode, David Kinnaman president of Barna Group and best selling author shares the results of thousands of hours or research and sheds light on why young people are leaving the church in a mass exodus. You’ll learn why kids are falling away from the faith and how you can parent in a way that builds faith in your kids.

He'll also share what young people flourishing the faith have in common and how we can parent in a way that builds a lasting faith in our kids.

David shares about interviewing young people and what helped them grow and stay in their faith. He shares the five practices of the younger generation with resilient faith: experiencing Jesus speaking to them, cultural discernment, meaningful relationship, vocational discipleship, and countercultural mission.

In this episode we discuss:

1. Why faith should be an exciting (and even risky) leap for your kids.

2. Why over-simplified faith answers aren't cutting it anymore.

3. Why the American dream may be crushing their faith.

Favorite quotes:

1. It is not a matter of if your kids are going to be exposed to it, it’s a matter of when. We have to be ready and prepared to live by what God says so that we can help our kids. We can’t protect them from everything. So it’s not saying “if this happens” but “when this happens?

2. Young people really want to learn and I think a lot of churches do a disservice by oversimplifying the message of the gospel.

3. We’re doing dial-up ministry in a wifi world.

4. To practice cultural discernment is to live under the authority of scripture.

5. We have a more American vision of what it means to be a young adult than we have a Christian vision of what it means to be a young adult.

In this episode I answer this question:

1. How can I overcome my past pain? (51:19)

30 Aug 2021Declutter to Destress with Allie Casazza00:48:59

Do you feel so overwhelmed and stressed out you don’t know where to go or what to do? What if I told you that you could have a life that is aligned with your priorities and space for all the things you want to do? Well, friends, today is an episode just for you!

My friend and friend of the show, the brilliant Allie Casazza is here to talk about minimalism and tips on how to declutter to destress our lives, families, and home. We talk about hot mess mom culture, how to make minimalism work for you, and tips for managing the kids’ toys (and the dog toys, too!)

Allie Casazza wants to eradicate the "hot mess mom" stereotype by empowering other women. She has built a massive audience and a multimillion-dollar online business based on her proven, family-oriented approach to minimalism. She is also the host of The Purpose Show, a chart-topping podcast, and the creator of multiple online programs and courses that garner tens of thousands of registrations each time they run. Her platforms continue to grow every day as more women discover her life-changing approach to creating an abundant life.

Tune in to hear more about:

  • Allie’s journey on how she become the go-to “minimalist mom”
  • How to take ownership of your life by taking ownership of your space
  • The ways being a mother impact your sense of identity
  • The importance of setting the intent for each room in your home.

Favorite quotes:

1. If you can take ownership over your space, you can take ownership over your life. 2. You being a mom is not your identity. It is a piece of what you’re here to do, just a piece. A really beautiful important piece of it.

3. There’s always going to be some level of mess even if you declutter. So what can you do to stop taking on all the pressure on yourself to maintain the house and clean it up? Put your kids in charge of their own stuff, set boundaries, do chore charts, do consequences. Whatever it is that fits in your parenting style. Set it up in some way so you're not the only one doing everything.

4. It’s about connecting with who you are in each room and setting up your space to support you. When we do that, we have an intention for the space and that helps us make decisions about the stuff.

5. If clutter is always unmade decisions, then declutter is to make decisions.

In this episode I answer this question:

I’m setting up my business, what are the most important systems I need to build right now? (44:24)

Great things we discussed:

1. Allie Casazza 2. Declutter Like A Mother

3. Asana 4. Trello 5. Woman 6. Frasier

7. Flex Disc

8. Standing Strong

20 Aug 2018Jennifer Dukes Lee on happiness, boundaries, and having it all under control01:03:46

In this episode we discuss:

  1. Why and how to make a list of core boundaries for your everyday life.
  2. Is there a difference between happiness and being joyful as a Christian?
  3. How to consult with God about what to do every day.
  4. Practical tools to help you give up control daily.

Favorite quotes-

  1. Scientifically we were made to be happy and by our creator, we are created for happiness
  2. God empowered us to do more, so I was like, "Lord what does it look like for me to let go of what I am not supposed to be hanging on to, to hang on tighter to those things you have really called me to do, and find this inner peace I once had in you, Lord that I forgot was even possible."

  3. Because I am a list maker I use to put God at the top of the list which sounds like a neat thing to do because I would do my little quiet time and put an X in the box but then what I saw happening was God became an item on my todo list instead of him being involved in all areas of my life, what I have been trying to do  is instead of making him an item on the list, I am asking for His instead of giving him mine.

  4. We have to use our tools to change our lives.

Bonus: After the interview join me as I answer your questions about life, faith, and business.

In this episode, I answer these questions-

  1. What did you do for birthday parties when your kids were little? Birthday parties stress me out. (44:32)
  2. What do you do when you don’t want to do what God tells you to do? (48:39)
  3. How do I know when it’s time to hire employees? I just started my small business and want to make a plan. (56:10)
