Welcome to the first episode of The A24 Project, where we examine and review the movie catalogue of film distribution company A24, two movies at a time.

We start back in 2013 with A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III starring Charlie Sheen and Bill Murray and then British period drama, Ginger & Rosa starring Elle Fanning. ​

This week we discuss one of the most infamous A24 releases, Spring Breakers starring James Franco and Sofia Coppola’s The Bling Ring based on the true story of a young group of thieves who stole from Hollywood celebrities.

Lee Hutchison and Dallas King look at Green Room, about a punk rock band who are forced to fight for survival after witnessing a murder at a neo-Nazi skinhead bar. The film stars the late Anton Yelchin who died tragically after the film was released, we celebrate his short but special career. We also discuss The Lobster directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, one of the most original films in the A24 catalogue, it's set in a dystopian near future, where single people, according to the laws of The City, are taken to The Hotel, where they are obliged to find a romantic partner in forty-five days or are transformed into beasts and sent off into The Woods.

In A24 Hour News, we look at the success of The Lighthouse at the Cannes film festival.

Brian De Palma is the subject of A24's first documentary 'De Palma' as he shares experiences and insight into a career that has spanned over fifty years and in 'Swiss Army Man' Paul Dano is a suicidal young man who encounters a farting corpse played by Daniel Radcliffe in one of their most original films.

Lee and Dallas watch two A24 movies for the first time, Equals which is set in an emotionless utopia, stars Nicholas Hoult and Kristen Stewart who fall in love when they regain their feelings from a mysterious disease, causing tensions between them and their society and Into The Forest which sees two sisters learn to survive on their own in their isolated woodland home after a massive power outage.

In A24 Hour News we discuss Fox News and their outrage over the new HBO/A24 series, Euphoria.

Lee speaks with Jared Moshe, the writer/director of A24 western, The Ballad of Lefty Brown starring Bull Pullman in the titular role.

Jared discusses his early career as a producer before transitioning to writer-director with his first Western, Dead Man's Burden. The Ballad of Lefty Brown followed and after its premiere at South By South West, A24 acquired the rights to the film. Jared tells us what it was like to hear A24 was interested in his film, how their marketing team work on a film and what their reputation is like from a filmmakers point of view.

Dallas and Lee watch two A24 films for the first time, Morris from America and The Sea of Trees.

First up we check out Morris from America, Morris is a 13-year-old African-American who moves to Germany with his dad and falls for a girl at a youth club who encourages him to open up and share his rapping skills.

In The Sea of Trees, a suicidal American played by Matthew McConaughey befriends a Japanese man lost in a forest near Mt. Fuji, a popular suicide spot and the two search for a way out.

In A24 Hour News we look at the release of Midsommar, A24 Public Access and preview an upcoming interview on our podcast with the writer/director of The Ballad of Lefty Brown, Jared Moshe.

Lee Hutchison speaks with filmmaker Azazel Jacobs, the writer/director of the A24 produced film, The Lovers. Debra Winger and Tracy Letts play a long-married, dispassionate couple who are both in the midst of serious affairs. But on the brink of calling it quits, a spark between them suddenly reignites, leading them into an impulsive romance.

Azazel discusses coming from a filmmaking family and his early career in shorts and features before working on the HBO/Sky Atlantic series, Doll and Em.
Azazel followed this up by writing/directing The Lovers, which was the second film after Moonlight to be produced and financed by A24. Azazel shares what it was like when A24 got involved, how they supported his creative vision and helped with the marketing and release of the film.

Lee and Dallas are joined by Megan Wilson, writer and podcaster for Screen Queens to breakdown American Honey and the Oscar winning Moonlight.

In American Honey, a teenage girl with nothing to lose joins a traveling magazine sales crew, and gets caught up in a whirlwind of hard partying, law bending and young love as she criss-crosses the Midwest with a band of misfits.Moonlight sees a young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.

Lee is joined the writer/director of A24's Into The Forest, Patricia Rozema. Into The Forest sees two sisters after a massive power outage learn to survive on their own in their isolated woodland home.

Patricia shares with me about how she went from not watching a movie until she was sixteen to becoming one of Canada's most prominent filmmakers. Patricia talks about the success at Cannes for her debut film, I've Heard The Mermaids Singing, tackling an adaptation of Mansfield Park, working with Miramax and the Weinstein's, directing for HBO and streaming, adapting Into The Forest and collaborating with Ellen Page and Evan Rachel Wood and we look at her new film, Mouthpiece.

Oasis: Supersonic details the history of the Britpop band Oasis during their formative years and the height of their success in the 1990s.
Zoe Kazan stars in The Monster, which sees a mother and daughter confront a terrifying monster when they break down on a deserted road.

20th Century Women is set in 1979 Santa Barbara, California, Dorothea Fields is a determined single mother in her mid-50s who is raising her adolescent son, Jamie, at a moment brimming with cultural change and rebellion. The Exception sees a German soldier try to determine if the Dutch resistance has planted a spy to infiltrate the home of Kaiser Wilhelm in Holland during the onset of World War II, but falls for a young Jewish Dutch woman during his investigation.

Within Brooklyn’s ultra-orthodox Jewish community, a widower battles for custody of his son in Menashe, we also have an interview with its producer and co-writer Alex Lipschultz.

The Safdie Brothers sophomore feature Good Time takes place after a botched bank robbery which lands Connie Nika's (Robert Pattinson) younger brother in prison, he embarks on a twisted odyssey through New York City's underworld to get his brother Nick out of jail.

Dallas and Lee continue on with A24's 2018 filmography with Lean on Pete and Backstabbing for Beginners.

In Lean on Pete, the teenage Charley befriends Lean on Pete, an ageing racehorse, when he arrives in Portland. When Charley learns that the horse is bound for slaughter, he tries to save him.

Backstabbing for Beginners is based on the real life story of Michael Soussan, a young United Nations employee, travels to Iraq with his mentor, who wants to show him how successful the UN's Oil-for-Food Program has been. When Michael gets a deeper look at the organization, he unveils a corruption conspiracy in which officials -- both inside and outside of the UN -- are skimming billions off the top of the aid meant for the Iraqi people.

Lee sits down with writer/director Trey Edward Shults to discuss his critically acclaimed 3rd feature film with A24, Waves.

Waves traces the journey of a suburban family - led by a well-intentioned but domineering father - as they navigate love, forgiveness, and coming together in the aftermath of a loss.

Lee is also joined by the cast that make up the family at the heart of this drama for a spoiler filled discussion , Sterling K. Brown, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Renée Elise Goldsberry and Taylor Russell.
