Ruskin Hartley of the International Dark-Sky Association joins Raelle and Liz to help us understand outdoor lighting that is not wasteful or harmful. Show Notes Ruskin Hartley is the Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director at The International Dark-Sky Association. Lighting Certified since 2000, Shirley is a Past President of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES), with 7 years on the IES Board of Directors. Shirley is active on several IES technical and service committees, including the Roadway Lighting Committee, the Outdoor Nighttime Environments Committee, and the Street & Area Lighting Committee. Shirley is also a Board member of the CIE’s Canadian National Committee.

Show notes Michael Weems serves as Vice President, Public Policy for the American Lighting Association. He came to ALA with a decade of experience in constituent services and a vast knowledge of various government policy topics. He has dedicated his career to public service and advancing quality lighting. Michael joined ALA in 2014 after spending 10 years working for the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. While working on Capitol Hill, he learned the ins and outs of the legislative process and its impact on the implementation of regulations. Before his time in the nation’s capital, Michael earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. During his time with ALA, Michael has worked to establish ALA’s presence in vital policy discussions, successfully representing the positions of the residential lighting industry. He is known as a strategic thinker with deep policy knowledge and possesses the skill to forge relationships and alliances. His ability to build consensus with industry experts and key decision-makers helps ensure policy victories for ALA. Away from ALA, Michael enjoys spending time with his wife, their daughter and the family Welsh-Terrier. He volunteers at his daughter’s school and serves on his neighborhood advisory council as well as the area school board ambassador program. Michael enjoys being outdoors running, hiking or playing golf. As a travel enthusiast, he is always searching for the next great bottle of wine or a nice glass of bourbon.

In honor of Women’s History Month, Raelle Bell sits down with Laura Van Zeyl of Dallas Market Center and Karyn Hayes of Hinkley to discuss their work over the past five years building and growing the ALA Women in Lighting (WIL) Committee. Learn how you can get involved in WIL and ALA. Plus, they dive into the trends impacting the industry and what they might mean for the coming years.
Show notes Laura Van Zeyl has been a leading figure in the lighting, home, and design industries since 1993, initially as an editor with Residential Lighting, Accessory Merchandising and Home Fashion Forecast magazines for more than two decades. Since 2016, Van Zeyl has worked on lighting events for Dallas Market Center, including Lightovation and ArchLIGHT Summit. Van Zeyl co-founded and chaired the Women in Lighting Committee for the American Lighting Association and currently leads the Committee’s Marketing Subcommittee. She also serves on the Advisory Board for ART - The Creative Home Furnishings Network, the Advisory Board for The H Foundation and the Allied Roundtable for AIA Dallas. She is a member of Women in Lighting + Design (WILD), an Affiliate member of the International Association of Lighting Designers (IALD) and an Associate Member of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES).
Karyn Hayes is the Director of Sales – Showroom for Hinkley. Karyn began her career in the lighting industry in 1993 as the National Business Manager for Lighting at Ferguson Enterprises, Corporate. She began her career in 2012 with Hinkley as East Regional Sales Manager, moving to showroom sales manager for North America in 2016. In 2023, she took over as director of sales for showrooms. In this role, she manages regional sales managers, independent sales representatives and oversees approximately 500 customers for the showroom channel. As an active member of Women in Lighting since its inception, Karyn has been involved in guiding the committee and leading program development. In her current role, she serves on the mentoring subcommittee.

The color rendering needs in a space vary, so how could one number accurately depict which light source renders colors “best?” While Color Rendering Index (CRI) provides one metric, TM-30 provides a robust suite of metrics that convey much more information than any previous attempt at characterizing color rendering. Jason Livingston, co-chair of the IES Color Committee, explains what TM-30 is (and isn’t) to Liz and Raelle, and explores how we can use TM-30 when evaluating lighting needs. His lighting work has garnered awards from the Illuminating Engineering Society and project profiles in Lighting Design + Application, Lighting & Sound America, Design Bureau, and Architectural SSL. We expect LED lamps to act like incandescent lamps, but they don’t. Why is that, and what do we need to consider to make LED light beautiful? From flicker, to burn out, to the color just seeming “off,” there are reasons why consumers run into issues and report dissatisfaction with their LED light bulbs. Don Peifer joins Raelle and Liz, taking us through the key points to consider as we switch from a hot glowing wire (tungsten) to the glowing computer that is an LED. Show notes Don began his career in lighting as a designer for film and fashion. He designed the lighting for Annie Leibovitz, Steven Klein and a variety of award-winning cinematographers. He received his Masters of Architectural Sciences in Lighting from the Lighting Research Center at RPI. He designed the lighting for the Nike Media Store in NYC. In 2007, he founded Lunera Lighting, a venture-backed start-up, which provided lighting for the fleet of Apple Stores and scores of Fortune 500 companies. He has worked with many of the industry leading manufacturers including Acuity Brands Lighting, where he was the VP of Innovation and Legrand, where he held the position of Creative Director for the Lighting Sector. He is currently the founder of Smash the Bulb, a luminaire manufacturer that uses alternative manufacturing techniques, circular design and sustainable materials to address issues with the current paradigm of lighting. In February, 2022, Smash the bulb was awarded one of 4 L-Prizes by the Department of Energy.

Jen Brons from LHRC and ALA’s Terry McGowan explain how these products were evaluated and what ALA members can expect from the future of this exciting new program.
Jennifer Brons, MS, LC, Educator IALD, earned her bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of California- Berkeley and her MS in Lighting from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Since 1997, her work has focused on lighting design applications and human factor studies for new lighting technologies. Over her more than 20-year career, Ms. Brons has developed lighting designs and specifications for a wide variety of commercial and residential clients. After practicing lighting design on sabbatical in London, she taught lighting design as part of the MS in Lighting degree program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for more than 10 years. In addition to her design and research activities, she develops educational material about the more effective use of light. Terry McGowan, FIES, LC is involved in illuminating engineering, lighting design, lighting education and lighting research. His professional career of 60+ years includes GE Lighting at Nela Park where he was Manager of the GE Lighting Institute. In 1998, he started his own consulting company, Lighting Ideas, Inc and became involved in lighting research as Director of the Lighting Research Office for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). He is now the American Lighting Association’s Director of Engineering & Technology and is the Executive VP of the J.H. McClung Lighting Research Foundation. Terry talked about his career and lighting interests at length in another great lighting podcast, Get A Grip on Lighting. The market for smart lighting and controls is growing faster than ever. Learn how to step into this crowded arena and take advantage of this billion-dollar market opportunity. Tim Vislay, Director of Sales for Lighting Showrooms at Legrand, joins Raelle and Liz, providing tips for how to bring these products to your showroom and what we can expect to see as smart lighting and controls continue to evolve.
Show notes Tim began his lighting career in 1986, when he took a job with Lamps Plus as a sales associate. He ultimately became a store manager, managing several locations within Lamps Plus. In 1999 he moved to the Expo Design Center and spent 5 years as the Lighting manager as well as several other management positions in the store. In 2004 he joined the Minka Group, first as a product manager, then became the sales manager for Minka Lavery in the Eastern Region. After leaving Minka, Tim worked as a Western Region sales manager with WAC, and then the Director of Sales for Maxim Lighting. After working as a sales manager for Minka Lavery, then WAC, then sales director for Maxim, in 2013 Tim was approached by Legrand to develop the Western Region in the showroom channel of distribution. In 2018 Tim became the Director of Sales responsible for the US and Canadian markets. Terry McGowan, ALA’s resident engineer, says “ There are so many control offerings and options today. It’s a wild market so that both consumers, as well as retailers, designers, reps and distributors are confused. What should they be reading, for example? [Note: I follow Craig DiLouie who writes for the Lighting Controls Association. “

Mark S. Rea, Ph.D., is a Professor in the Department of Department of Population Health Science and Policy at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He was formerly Professor of Architecture and Cognitive Sciences at the Lighting Research Center (LRC) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and served as LRC Director from 1988 to 2017. Dr. Rea is well known for his research in circadian photobiology, mesopic vision, psychological responses to light, lighting engineering, and visual performance. He is the author of more than 250 scientific and technical articles related to vision, lighting engineering, and human factors and was the editor-in-chief of the 8th and 9th editions of the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Lighting Handbook. His recent book Value Metrics for Better Lighting brings together a wide range of research to illustrate how the effective use of light can benefit society and the environment.
Jennifer Brons, MS, LC, Educator IALD, earned her bachelor's degree in architecture from the University of California- Berkeley and her MS in Lighting from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Since 1997, her work has focused on lighting design applications and human factor studies for new lighting technologies. Over her more than 20-year career, Ms. Brons has developed lighting designs and specifications for a wide variety of commercial and residential clients. After practicing lighting design on sabbatical in London, she taught lighting design as part of the MS in Lighting degree program at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for more than 10 years. In addition to her design and research activities, she develops educational material about the more effective use of light.

Show notes Mary Soeder, a Business Development Manager at PDI Nashville, has been with the company for over 12 years and in the industry for 16+ years. Soeder, a Nashville native, became accustomed to working with designers and their preferences while at PDI in Atlanta and later came home to open the Nashville showroom. She was recently featured in Nashville Interiors recognizing her outstanding work in the lighting, kitchen, and bath industry. Mary is commended not only for her contributions to PDI, but in her charitable work with the Ronald McDonald House in Nashville and Our Little Roses, an all-girls home in Honduras that gives girls of all ages a safe, loving home and education. Over the years, Clark has worked closely with ALA staff and committee member volunteers to support association efforts. He served on the ALA Board of Governors from 2009 to 2015, including as chairman in 2014. Some of his most notable impacts on the industry and ALA have been through his role in supporting ALA’s government engagement efforts. He currently serves as chair of the Government Engagement Committee. He has also served as chair of the ALA Political Action Committee, treasurer on the Board of Governors, chair of the Membership Campaign Committee, and is a member of the Electronic Technology Committee. Joseph A. Rey-Barreau, AIA, IESNA, is an architect and lighting designer with over thirty years of experience as a design professional. He is also an Associate Professor with tenure in the College of Design at the University of Kentucky where he has won numerous teaching awards. Since 1995, Joes has served as an educational consultant and instructor for ALA and has developed hundreds of lighting education courses and online webinars for both the lighting industry and allied professionals, such as architects, engineers, and interior designers. He is also the founder and Education Director of LED University, which offers online seminars focused on current and developing LED design trends and technology updates.
