Welcome to the National Finals Rodeo Round 7 2019 recap! While some of the biggest names in rodeo, such as bull rider Sage Kimzey and barrel racer Hailey Kinsel are starting to stretch their lead in the projected world standings, team roping and tie down roping’s young guns are continuing to attack with deadly speed. Many of the world titles are up for grabs, you’ve just gotta grab them!

Jona Robles didn't start in the horse world, in fact, he only got started with horses when he was trying to impress a girl. A former professional basketball player and walk-on kicker for the University of Oregon, Jona had his degree in psychology and thought he'd always use that degree. But his education, combined with his physical athleticism, made horses an exciting challenge and one that he started to find success in quickly.

Leaving his full time job at OHSU, Jona began training horses full time taking on any and all horses of whatever discipline, whatever issues, and more. As he honed his craft, he started to become known for his colt starting processes and started traveling as a clinician and instructor. 

Right when everything started to go right, however, Jona began to feel overwhelmed with burn out. Problem horses, surrounding yourself with the wrong people, and over working himself, he stepped away from horses. At the time, he didn't have plans to come back. 

Getting away, traveling the world, and taking care of his mental health, it only two weeks for his body to reset and the burn out to go away. He came back with a vengeance, a new program and boundaries to protect his mental health, and was caught off guard when he was accepted as a finalist in the Wild Card competition of the Road to the Horse colt starting challenge. 

Join us in this episode as Jona talks about his upbringing, getting into horses, the details of the Road to the Horse that both the public see and the behind the scenes that only competitors are privy too, how he handles his mental health as a horse trainer, and his preparations for the big contest in Kentucky where he'll compete against the biggest names in the country!

When it comes to the history of the American Cowboy, modern media has painted the picture to look one way, when the reality shows that enslaved African Americans known as "Cow Boys" were truly the icons that changed the west, creating a unique equalizer post Emancipation Proclamation.

Katie Surritt & Katie Schrock take a deep dive into the history of African American cow boys and the impacts they have had on the west, cattle drives, and rodeo as we know it. 

To precursor all of this, this is what we have deduced from our own research which includes books, professors, peer-reviews articles, essays, and more. It’s a good variety, but under no circumstance do we consider ourselves experts or scratched the surface so that we can continue developing the true history. People have devoted their whole lives to this and we have devoted a very small time in reality. What we share today is what we know to be true. This is why we are arguing because we are interpreting historical facts.

Summary: Starting with the first arrival of cattle to the Hawaiian Islands, the That Western Life team take a deep dive into the history of the Paniolo and the Hawaiian ranching and rodeo culture. From feral, dangerous cattle, to their own style of shipping and being crowned the 1908 World Champion Steer Ropers, Paniolos have changed many of how we see America. Rodeo did that. 

In this episode: 

• Hawaii's Introdcution to cattle and horses
  • The first calf born on the island was recorded to have been fed fish (don't worry, the British were equally as horrified)
  • A kapu or Royal Edict was put on the cattle to protect harm or death from befalling them and were called the "King's Cattle"
  • Within 10 years, 20,000 head of feral cattle, the ancestors of the same breed of black coated longhorns set against grizzley bears in Alta, California, for sport were running feral killing people, ruining homes, and destroying agricluture. 
• Bullock Hunters brought to the islands to control the populations
  • King Kamehameha III employs vaqueros to teach the native Hawaiians how to use horses and to manage the cattle. 
  • Hawaiian horsemen and cattlemen name themselves "paniolo" 
• Paniolos create their own cowboy culture
  • Including equipement, tack and their own breed of shipping and tail horses
  • A unique situation, the paniolos had to drag cattle into the ocean to be handed off to boats that would take the cattle to the ships waiting out at sea

Carly Twisselman is a native to the central coast of California, where she grew up on her family's generational cattle ranch. Always being a part of rodeo through the roping scene, she took a chance to independently rodeo-ing for the UCLA Bruins while getting a degree in mass communications and aspirations of being an actress! 

It wasn't until she decided to step into the professional world of rodeo that she decided to upgrade from running her roper horses in barrel racing to a bred-to-run quarter horse cross as barrel racing was her only option as a woman in prorodeo. Her current mount, Charm, is a half-sister to Hailey Kinsel's great mare Sister, and is setting the way for Carly's success in the rodeo arena. But potentially even more exciting is the addition of breakaway roping to prorodeo's across the country! 

Carly dives deep into ranching, rodeo, her breeding program and bloodlines, being a television host for RIDE-TV and her involvement in the hunting industry and politics.

Katy Lucas is a former Miss Rodeo Canada who is living in Texas, ropes in Arizona, and is an all and all jack-of-all-trades. A broadcaster and a reporter, you may have thought that Katie (Schrock) was analytical when it came to rodeo stats but Katy Lucas will show you what’s up when it comes to rodeo stats and updates! Join hosts Katie & Rachel as they talk to Katy about her career as a rodeo athlete team roping and breakaway roping, rodeo sports broadcasting, Canadian rodeos in comparison to U.S. rodeos, and her time spent as a former Miss Rodeo Canada.

Kim Rounds first came on our show at the start of Season 3 and is back for a second round as a part of our collaboration with COWGIRL Magazine's 30 Under 30 Program. A specialty beef programs manager and all beef exports listed under her job title at 5 Rivers Cattle Feeders, Kim's also in charge of social media and other outreach such as facility tours. As of late, Kim's hard work has been recognized in a multitude of 30 Under 30 and 40 Under 40 awards, making her the unplanned face of the ranching (and female ranching) industry throughout Colorado and America. 

Kim's background with the western lifestyle has stemmed from a lifelong love of cattle and horses. A show jumper turned reined cowhorse competitor, Kim's need for speed and adrenaline has created a newfound passion in the world of cowhorse where her and her great mare, Stevie, have won countless awards. As a part of that passion, however, Kim has continued to learn more and more about the cowhorse industry - even creating an Excel spreadsheet on cowhorse studs that would rival co-host Katie Schrock's National Finals Rodeo spreadsheets!

Rookie Saddle Bronc Rider Q Taylor is on the hunt for his first National Finals Rodeo - no small feat for a first year professional rodeo cowboy! The impacts of the novel-coronavirus on rodeo committees and communities around the United States has been immense. We sat down at the start of the 2020 COVID-19 Pandemic to chat with Lakeside Rodeo of California's committee members about the painful conversation that took place to make the decision to postpone their event until 2021.

It's not the first time adversity has his this rodeo committee though - situated in the heart of San Diego, they have gone above and beyond to bridge the community gap between the urban and rural neighborhoods. They continue to work towards the 2021 event, as well as a few other smaller-scaled opportunities for their local rodeo community to stay involved and relevant during these times.

Growing up in a military family, Julia Ayres moved every two years until she was seventeen years old. Despite all the new locations, there was something that she was passionate about from a young age - horses. Whether it was eight year old Julia demanding her dad follow a horse trailer to find where the horses were or asking to ride the trail ride horses, Julia was dedicated to learning all that she could.

Her hard work paid off and she completed her degree in equine sciences at Colorado State University with an emphasis in event production. Today, she works for Twisted X in marketing and sponsorships, and continues to share her passion for horses and the western lifestyle as a COWGIRL Magazine 30 Under 30 recipient.

Growing up on a horse ranch, showing sheep and pigs, Markie Hageman was a barrel racer who ran for rodeo queen contests and thoughts of agriculture and FFA never crossed her mind. A fashion merchandising major out of high school, she was planning to move to the big city of Los Angeles but that all changed in 2014 when she was named the Miss Loodlake Lions (California) Rodeo Queen and discovered the lacking gap in communication between the urban and rural divide.

Alden Stehly is a the third-generation of her family to be a part of the Thoroughbred Racehorse scene. Her great grandfather was the first to catch the bug after owning stockyards throughout southern California and being asked to auctioneer for a racehorse sale. He changed the game of racehorse auctions from slower paced, art gallery style bidding, to the cadence and energy that we are familiar with from the cattle sales pens. 

Alden's father joined the profession as well and her mother created a legacy for herself as a pinhooker who created great horses ready to be topped (or ridden). A pinhooker is someone who takes a weanling and then grows/trains them out to a yearling, or a yearling to a two-year-old. Alden has followed her parents' profession as a pinhooker.

Shaina Zollman grew up in the cowboy town of Pendleton, Oregon, and went on to follow in her families legacy of Pendleton Round-Up participation and volunteerism when she was a part of their court as first a princess and then the queen. Where the rough stock riders really shined in Round 5, our timed event contestants showed up in Round 6! The average race for the National Finals Rodeo in 2021 is starting to even out with out as many changes after each nightly performance but there is still a lot of shake up that can happen.

She's the 2019 Texas Circuit Champion barrel racer and the 2018 WPRA Resistol Rookie of the Year, a Texas Cowgirl that has won A LOT of money on her special horse, "LenaOnTheRocks" or "Lena." Today's guest is Jimmie Smith whose illustrious rodeo career started long before the 2018 Rookie title… she’s a three-time CPRA finalist, was the 2018 Puyallup PRCA Champion and placed third at the Ellensburg (Washington) rodeo. 

When Devan Reilly realized that his college of choice in Casper, Wyoming, didn’t have his sports of football or wrestling, the former standout high school athlete decided to try the sport of rodeo. A native of Sheridan, Devan didn’t have the funds necessary to buy a saddle for saddle bronc and didn’t have a desire to be chased by bulls. He did have a love for legendary cowboy and country music singer Chris LeDoux and, just like LeDoux, Devan became a bareback bronc rider. 

He would be more like his idol than he originally thought however as, in 2017, he started using his voice to share his love of the western lifestyle, rodeo, guided hunting, and war heroes through his Blazing Trails podcast. Today, Devan is a Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association bareback bronc rider, guided hunter, and hobby rodeo podcaster.

Tori Miller graduated high school at the age of sixteen years old to drive 18 hours east to audition for one of two spots on a University’s traveling singing troupe. She not only made the stop, but she traveled the country for four years while getting her English degree.

But 120 plus shows a year for that stretch took it’s toll and she felt burnt out. “Go back to your roots,” advised her step father and those roots were the world of rodeo. Three pageants later and she was named the 2016 Miss Rodeo Arkansas, the Rising Star at her next pageant - the subsequent Miss Rodeo America Pageant, her rodeo queen fashion was featured in Vogue, and then she made the Season 19 cast of NBC’s The Voice on Team Gwen Stefani!

A practicing veterinarian from the Idaho Equine Hospital in Nampa, Idaho, Dr. Jared Sharp joins us to chat all things horse myths as submitted by the fans. There’s been a new movement in the past year regarding rodeo athletes placing an emphasis on athlete as a big part of their budding career success. Natasha McCann grew up an athlete before a major injury sidelined her from her collegiate dreams. A resilient young lady, Natasha became a buckaroo riding colts and then, on the side, got her EMT license and worked in an ambulance. Her passion for fitness and the western life led her to become a 2023 COWGIRL Magazine 30 Under 30 Recipient, as well as an athletic trainer for some of rodeos top athletes and a training coach with Champion Fitness Living.
