22 Jun 2022BONUS MINISODE: Films to add to your watchlist from Sundance London 202200:25:15

BONUS SOLO EPISODE ALERT: I just wrapped Sundance London 2022 at Picturehouse Cinemas so this mini solo episode lets you in on the festival's film highlights. You asked for more suggestions from indie filmmakers so I've come with goodies.

Listen up for reviews on:

  • Resurrection (starring Rebecca Hall as Margaret, a woman whose carefully constructed life is upended when an unwelcome shadow from her past, David, played excellently by Tim Roth, returns)
  • Watcher (part of the Official Selection at the Sundance Film Festival 2022 U.S. Dramatic Competition, it was shot during the pandemic and stars Maika Monroe as an expat being stalked)
  • Hatching (an inventive Finnish horror, the film follows Tinja, a 12-year-old gymnast, who brings a strange mop egg home and nurtures it until it hatches)
  • The Princess (British director Ed Perkins’ highly anticipated doc lets archive footage do the talking in this compelling and uncompromising documentary of Princess Diana’s story)
  • We Met In Virtual Reality (Directed by Joe Hunting, this doc takes place entirely within the online platform VRChat)
  • Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul. (An American dark comedy satire by Adamma Ebo in her directorial debut, and featuring a stellar cast that includes Regina Hall and Sterling K. Brown)
  • Bodies, Bodies, Bodies (Directed by Halina Reijn and produced by A24, a party game goes awry in this fresh and funny look at backstabbing, fake friends & the TikTok generation)

05 Oct 2022Don't Worry Darling review and ending explained, Harry Styles' acting chops & Wolverine joining Deadpool 3 reactions00:49:17

Well. We couldn't resist but jump on the Wilde-Pugh-Styles-Pine train with this episode. No, we don't talk about The Spit all that much (y'all are just looking for drama) but we do go all in on the plot, direction & story of the most talked about film of the year (as of yet).

Dive right in to hear:

  • Simon taking some of our film recommendations, as mentioned in the podcast (he finally watched THE PRESTIGE!!)
  • Sophie finally catching up on Only Murders In The Building Season 2 (and she has thoughts about it)
  • Ben still pushing through with Rings of Power and House of The Dragon
  • Our reactions to Hugh Jackman's Wolverine joining Deadpool 2
  • Our much-heated reactions to Don't Worry Darling (let's just say we didn't agree on much)
  • Our thoughts on the film's ending and how we'd make it better (we agreed a bit more here)
  • The difference between assumed endings and cliffhangers (and how they make an ending great)

19 Oct 2022Donnie Darko, Cabin In The Woods & Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (Halloween Special)00:52:23

Hi friends and foes - Spooky season is upon us and we're getting all dark and gnarly with a Halloween Special episode for you.

We're full of treats (no tricks) with this one:

  • Sophie is back on her bullsh*t with loads of TV and film recommendations (yeah The Watcher is the absolute best and worst at the same time)
  • Simon has some strong thoughts on the upcoming Netflix film Roald Dahl's Matilda
  • Ben is slowly losing his patience with Rings of Power and House of The Dragon
  • What constitutes a Halloween film? If Die Hard is a Christmas film, isn't Donnie Darko a Halloween film? A DEBATE
  • The meta-ness of Cabin in The Woods is far superior to what we've seen from other recent meta horror films like The Matrix 4 and Scream 5
  • How the nose and wig acting in Sweeney Todd delivers spot-on Macbeth vibes

02 Nov 2022The best films to cheer you up + Little Miss Sunshine ending explained00:57:56

It's National Stress Awareness Week here in the UK so we are directing our attention to all things low-stress in this episode. What things you ask? Well...

  • Our unofficial love letters to Sacha Baron Cohen and Timothy Spall
  • Our never-ending apathy for Lord of The Rings: Rings of Power and everything Marvel related (with the exception of She-Hulk!)
  • Our review of Black Adam without even seeing it
  • Our open call to getting one of Sophie's favourite directors, Edgar Wright, as a podcast guest
  • Your selection of films you go back to when you're not feeling 100% (we chimed in with ours too)
  • A hearty conversation about one of the sweetest films ever made, Little Miss Sunshine; we talk about family relationships, redemption arcs, the power of naivety and oh that dance-off sequence in the end

16 Nov 2022Villains Who Actually Had a Point, our Pixar favourites & Black Panther ending explained00:58:55

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is breaking records left and right across the world (hello, biggest November opening ever) so we went back to 2018’s Black Panther to sing its praises and honour its legacy.

And because we couldn’t get enough of Michael B. Jordan’s Erik Killmonger, we decided to have a chat about villains that kinda have a point??? (Why are y’all saying Thanos lol). Make sure to listen along to see if we picked your answer ;)

We also laughed our way through:

  • Ben actually JUST WATCHED Morbius and oh boy, he has thoughts
  • Our Pixar favourites
  • Obsessing over British TV for better or for worse (The Great British Bakeoff, The Crown, This is Going To Hurt)
  • Sophie’s Diana fatigue
  • Simon’s IanMcShane guy crush
  • The least expected Bend It Like Beckham callback

30 Nov 2022Picking the best actor to play Elon Musk & The Social Network ending explained00:57:17

Tech billionaires, unregulated social platforms, egotistical maniacs, lack of content moderation...all is fun and games on the internet (enter sarcastic snark here) so we thought an episode around David Fincher's The Social Network is the perfect film to revisit right now.

In this episode, you'll have to forgive us for:

  • Not watching Black Panther: Wakanda Forever yet
  • Confusing Colin Farrell with Colin Firth for no reason
  • Watching Beverly Hills Cop for the millionth time
  • Not giving a stellar review to The Crown Season 5 (we're loving some of the cast though)
  • Going hard on wig acting commentary
  • Lying about films we've watched
  • Accurately fancasting Elon Musk (thanks to your picks)
  • Shamefully mispronouncing Joaquin Phoenix
  • Spending an absurd amount of time on the ending of The Social Network (so much to debate on...)

22 Feb 2023Acting debates, Oscars predictions & Banshees of Inisherin Ending Explained (with actor Simon Haines)01:16:01

Our most anticipated episode has arrived! It's Oscars season hunny which means only one thing...we take a bunch of uneducated guesses on who's going to win the shiny goldie this year. Ben unfortunately couldn't join us for this episode but we brought someone who could turn our un-education to education; Sophie's friend and supremely talented actor Simon Haines.

Dive right in to listen: 👇

  • Simon P's iconic intro for Simon H
  • Simon H's acting background and what he's been up to (spoiler alert: he can't tell us)
  • Movie reccos: What we've been watching over the past weeks
  • The Oscars predictions debate! We're going through yours + ours and let's just say there's some contention there
  • Breaking down the final scene of the Oscar-nominated Banshees of Inisherin; We talk about the Irish Civil War, male friendships, the futility of conflict, the psyche of tortured artists and much more

A very special shoutout to the lovely listeners who shared their predictions with us (+ extra cookie to Grant for his great voice note).

23 Mar 2023The greatest decade in movie history and The Deer Hunter ending explained00:44:57

Heyllo! We're back with one of your most requested endings of all time - the one and only final scene from The Deer Hunter.

The episode deets:

  • Simon's take on True Lies (yikes) and how Sophie confused the film with another Leo film (double yikes)
  • Ben's thoughts on the "new" Daredevil and Bob Iger's rethink on Marvel's output from now on
  • Sophie's on a bad films streak these past 2 weeks...with an exception (Rye Lane!)
  • We go through your answers on the best decade in cinema history (spoiler: it's not the 80s)
  • Sophie goes on a rabbit hole to find the objective answer (we kinda found it)
  • We spend last 20 minutes on one of the most controversial, yet iconic, movie endings of all time from the 5-time Academy Award winner The Deer Hunter, starring Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep and so an absurd amount of more stellar actors.

Time to get excited for our next podcast ep: Our very first Edgar Wright feature with an all-time fave, Scott Pilgrim vs The World.

28 Feb 2024The Iron Claw review + Actors who may just need new agents00:53:48

We're back with our bi-weekly movie and TV show chat (sorry for the delay, I was off to Iceland for a few days 🇮🇸). We discuss films such as 'Dune' (um yup, Ben only just saw it), 'I The Iron Claw', the TV show 'Time' and yet again...'Poor Things'. Sophie praises the performances in 'Ironclaw', while Ben critiques Tom Holland's career choices. They also touch on movies like 'Patriot Games', 'The Fugitive' and 'Saltburn'. They receive a voice note from a listener, Andres, who presents a critique on the adaptation of 'Poor Things'. 06 Mar 2024Oscars 2024 predictions + judging actor accents (with Simon Haines)01:00:27

This is the most timely podcast episode you'll hear this week - it's OSCARS 2024 PREDICTIONS time! And just because us 3 are supremely unqualified to make any educated guesses, we HAD to invite actor Simon Haines back (@thesimonhaines on Instagram) to help us with the task.

So let's do this, sip on a cup of tea (or whiskey, we ain't judging) and listen up:

  • Quick (re)-intro to Simon and what we've been watching (yes, Ben's hate-watching continues)
  • Sophie brings some audio clips from movie scenes...and Simon needs to guess who it is...and judge the ACCENT
  • A breakdown of our Oscar predictions (and hopefuls) for the major categories

25 Apr 2024Dune: Part Two Ending Explained, Roadhouse Remake, Fallout & Baby Reindeer Reactions00:59:50

Heyllo! After an extended break (and still suffering through third winter here in the UK), the gang is back with some movie and TV talk. We hope you missed us 🥹

Let's jump right in:

  • Holidays! Trips! Work! The team's been busEY but we did our best to come back in full force
  • Why is the new Roadhouse so...bad? Simon answers.
  • Baby Reindeer is the best show Sophie has seen this year
  • Ben is sort of obsessed with Fallout...which is frankly great news
  • DUNE 2 breakdown including that final scene (and what comes next)

16 May 2024Challengers reactions, Baby Reindeer discourse & is the Superhero era over?00:58:17

You'll want to stay until the END for this episode...trust me. We're back with another catch up episode (as we have soooo much catch up to do) but fear not, the next ep is going to be a massive final scene treat. In any case, this discussion was really fun:

  • A listener did not enjoy Ripley so we're diving right into it
  • Ben has now also watched Baby Reindeer and gives his reactions
  • Sophie is obsessed with Challengers and struggles to not give any spoilers
  • Simon watched A Beautiful Boy and gave his reaction
  • Tom Hanks and his Da Vinci trilogy has a cameo somewhere in the ep
  • Another listener asked us if Timothée Chamalet should stop acting and we have thoughts
  • We tackle a more serious listener question: Is the era of superheroes over? This is a JUICY one
  • ANDDDD we announce the final scene of THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING - we finally convinced Simon!!

19 Jun 2024The Lord of the Rings (Part I) - The Fellowship of the Ring Ending Explained00:44:05

Hi hi hi. With The Rings of Power Season 2 back soon (yikes) AND the upcoming The Lord of the Rings prequels, we realized we could not prolong the wait any longer. We had to sit Simon down to finally watch LOTR with us. And the results may surprise you...;)

This episode is extra special to us because Ben, Simon and I watched the film together right before we recorded this. Which is also why I sound a tad tired and said Dark Towers vs Two Towers, please forgive me 😭

Expect Part II and Part III in the following weeks. We, for one, can't wait.

29 Jul 2024The Lord of The Rings (Part II) - The Two Towers Ending Explained00:44:28

After a short summer hiatus (weddings! sunny days! boring work stuff!), we're back and excited to share the commentary of our second The Lord Of The Rings live-watch: The Two Towers. Now you may think The Lord Of The Rings is an odd one to revisit over the summer but trust us...it's a GREAT franchise to bounce back to.

Lots of goodies in this conversation (mostly Simon's first-time-viewing reactions) so we guarantee you're going to enjoy it. Please make sure you join us for the last and more epic viewing yet because THE RETURN OF THE KING is coming!!!

04 Nov 2024Anora, Maria & Industry Season 3 Reviews & Gladiator Ending Explained01:01:12

Quick heads up: That Final Scene is now dropping new episodes every other MONDAY, giving you extra time to process what just happened (and us extra time to overthink them).

In which your hosts return from their partially Mediterranean adventures (coincidentally matching our Roman episode theme) to dive into the epic final moments of Ridley Scott's sword-and-sandals masterpiece.

But first, we journey through the spring/summer movie landscape, from the neon-drenched violence of John Wick 4 to the emotional gut-punch that is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (turns out all Spidey films can make us cry).

We clash opinions on the latest batch of blockbusters before storming the gates of the London Film Festival, where Steve McQueen's 'Blitz' left us disappointed and 'Maria' proved that sometimes the best films are the ones that explore a single week than an entire lifetime.

Then it's time to don our armor and dive into GLADIATOR's final showdown - a masterclass in revenge served ice-cold in the Roman sun. We unpack everything from Joaquin Phoenix's god-tier villain performance (the OG toxic failson before Succession made it cool) to Russell Crowe's journey from vengeance to something approaching grace.

Plus, we speculate wildly about the upcoming sequel because apparently what 2024 needs is more sand and sandals.

18 Nov 2024What makes a great music biopic? (and why you hate them)00:51:11

Listen, I knew this episode would derail the moment we started talking about The Foreigner (a hidden gem that deserves your time, even if just to watch Jackie Chan break your heart in the most unexpected way). The movie has Pierce Brosnan doing... things with an Irish accent, and that's all I'll say about that. Simon finally caught up with not one, but three gems - the 'Spider-Verse' animation films and Of An Age, which he claims is the best Australian romance film that nobody watched (okay Simon, I see you with the taste).

After you all lovingly bombarded my Instagram Q&A Stories with your (music) biopic takes, we had to dive into this whole... situation. Because apparently, we haven't seen enough after Bohemian Rhapsody. If you're wondering – yes, we're all terrified about the upcoming Bob Dylan and Springsteen projects. But also…intrigued.

Ben went on his monthly 'Scrubs' evangelism tour (but he's not wrong – the way that show balanced comedy and gut-punch moments? Unmatched). I just sat there and nodded because what else can you do when someone's spitting facts?

09 Dec 2024There Will Be Blood Ending Explained & Other Milkshakes01:00:00

There's a moment in There Will Be Blood where Daniel Plainview stares at a burning oil derrick with maniacal glee while others panic around him. That scene captures everything fascinating about PTA's examination of capitalism, greed, and American ambition - and it's just one of many moments we unpack in this week's episode - including of course…its final scene.

Before diving into our main discussion, Ben and I get into it over Gladiator 2 (which I maintain is a perfectly entertaining time if you accept it for the ridiculous spectacle it is), and Simon takes us through Michael Bay's 13 Hours, leading to an unexpected conversation about method acting and on-set dynamics.

But the heart of this episode is our analysis of the iconic There Will Be Blood - from Paul Dano's remarkable dual performance (pulled off with just 4 days of prep) to the film's masterful exploration of how capitalism and religion feed off each other. We dig into the historical context, decode that famous milkshake monologue, and debate whether Daniel Plainview was always a monster or if success corrupted him.

Next episode: We're closing out the year with our Christmas special, featuring what will surely be a deeply competitive movie trivia showdown.

27 Dec 2024A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Black Doves reactions & our annual festive movie quiz00:44:07

In our final episode of 2024, we do what any self-respecting film nerds would do during the holidays - torture each other with impossibly specific movie trivia. But first, some cinematic therapy:

We kick things off diving into CONCLAVE (or as I like to call it, "Ralph Fiennes Does His Best Pope Impression While Looking Incredibly Concerned"). This leads us down a rabbit hole about actors who deserve Oscars but keep getting snubbed. Speaking of snubs, we tackle the Harry Potter reboot news - I have THOUGHTS about recasting, and they mostly involve protecting the sacred memory of Robbie Coltrane. But that’s for another episode.

The middle chunk gets spicy with chat about Black Doves (Netlix’s new smash hit), the new Bob Dylan film that feels like it exists in a parallel universe (it’s really good), and why Tom Cruise continues to defy both gravity and aging. There's a brief detour into Netflix territory, which somehow evolves into an impassioned debate about MUBI's latest programming choices. If anyone wants to get Simon a pressie, let it be an annual MUBI subscription.

Then comes the quiz portion - the main event, if you will. I channel my inner film school professor and subject Simon to a Mrs. Doubtfire interrogation that would make Robin Williams wince. I absolutely demolish the Fight Club round - turns out watching it approximately 27 times pays off. Ben tests Simon's James Bond knowledge, which leads us down various 007 rabbit holes. Which I didn’t understand one bit.

We close out with anticipation for the new Nosferatu coming in 2024. Because nothing says "Happy New Year" like a German expressionist vampire, right?

20 Jan 2025The Da Vinci Code Is Stilll Camp & Nosferatu Ending Explained 00:46:24

Well, it seems like it's time to sink our teeth into another THAT FINAL SCENE episode (sorry, couldn't resist). If you're also grappling with Robert Eggers' latest “Nosferatu” and Ellen's choice to face death in that haunting final scene, you might want to tune in.

We go deep into the shadows of this one – from death-and-maiden motifs to why some of us felt oddly disconnected despite the film's technical mastery. Plus, we somehow end up on a tangent about watching THE DA VINCI CODE over the holidays (questionable choices were made) and why old Bond films hit different now.

Fair warning: we get into a heated debate about whether this version of NOSFERATU actually makes us feel anything beyond aesthetic appreciation. And yes, we absolutely dissect that ending – you know I got you covered y’all.

Come for the vampire discourse, stay for our chaotic holiday viewing confessions and some spicy award season predictions that will probably age terribly.

The episode is available wherever you get your podcasts.

And while you're there, maybe leave us a review? Unless you're Count Orlok himself – in which case, we respectfully decline your feedback.

P.S. Between you and me, there's a moment where we completely derail into UK Traitors Season 3 territory and I regret nothing. Enjoy!

28 Feb 2025The Academy vs the People: 2025 Oscar predictions and your personal favorites (with Gabriel Frieberg)01:23:16

I've never been so unprepared for an Oscar season. This year's race feels like someone threw all the conventional wisdom into a blender, hit puree, and walked away laughing.

So in this episode, we are joined by The Schmear Hunter’s Gabriel Frieberg – whose Berlinale stories alone are worth the price of admission – to walk us through his film and TV journey, and quickly descend into our annual tradition of pretending we have any idea what'll happen on Hollywood's favorite night of self-congratulation: The Academy Awards.

Gabriel turned out to be the perfect antidote to my cynicism, bringing actual insights from the festival circuit while Ben chugged tea and ranted about why "Furiosa" deserved more recognition. We dove into the genuine surprise of Ariana Grande's performance in "Wicked" (who knew?) and debated whether Demi Moore will finally get her flowers in the Best Actress category.

The real fun came when we compared our predictions against what YOU, the TFS community, voted for in our Substack ballot. Your "will win" picks are surprisingly industry-savvy, but your "want to win" choices? Pure chaos in the best possible way.

Sean Baker vs. Brady Corbet for Best Director created our most heated exchange (sorry for the sound spike), and none of us could agree whether "Conclave" deserves its Best Picture nomination. But there's unanimous support for "Anora" in both our panel and community picks—which probably means something else will win because the Oscars love nothing more than making us all look foolish.

Make sure you listen on our take on the Bond franchise's uncertain future and stay for Gabriel’s passionate defense of the films that got completely overlooked this awards season. As always, I promise to eat my words publicly when my predictions turn out wrong.
