15 Dec 2021Symbaroum Post-Game with Mattias Johnsson Haake01:31:06

We wrap up our incredible gaming session of Symbaroum by inviting back to the table Symbaroum’s co-creator, Mattias Johnsson Haake.

This conversation was recorded fresh of the heels of our August recording sessions so while the players and GM knew how things went later in the campaign Mattias himself had only listened to the first two episodes. But after all the fun we had playing his game we absolutely had to invite him to join us for our post-game debrief.

This hour will not be your typical interview with a game creator. We heap love on him and gush about the game and share our favorite story point and Mattias opens up about the design choices and some of his favourite themes in the game and how Symbaroum formed into what it has become.

This is the final episode, for now, in our 12 part campaign of Symbaorum. If you haven’t listened to the complete playlist we highly suggest you go back into our feed and listen to them all before this interview, because we are going to spill the beans all over your spoiler alert.

Night Witches is a game that follows the airwomen of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment. They flew in obsolete bi-planes, at night, with no parachute.

Things are desperate. It is incredibly dangerous. They fly in darkness, sometimes a dozen missions each night. The Soviet army wishes they didn’t exist and nobody expects them to succeed. They are going to succeed anyway.

The Beast Clan has retreated into the forest, the town puts up barriers and believes it is safe. But we know better…

Before our trio begins their investigation into the mystery surrounding the woman at the Fern Tavern, they look back on where they’ve been and how they got here.

More than a Recap

The Terrible Warriors exists to help empower you to feel confident enough to play and run the games we enjoy here. Which is why this is much more than a recap episode, it is as much a part of our "actual play” as the rest of the story we have presented.

Every GM needs to have a session, especially after a major battle or a story arc that has concluded, to take stock and let their players recount the events in their own words.

A recap session like this helps equip the GM with specific information about what their players are interested in and what, up to this point, has stuck with them the most. And it equips the players with a renewed sense of motivation and inspiration as they remember why they are invested in seeing this story through.

27 Jan 2021Session Zero: Nibiru01:42:41

Life In A Skyless World

Session Zero returns with a dive into the unique world of Nibiru. A colossal space station home to millions of humans and the player characters who have no memory about where they came from.

“From The Core We Hail”

Nibiru first came onto our radar a few years ago when our friends at Modiphius sent us a press release about a game where your characters have no memories and your character sheet, mostly blank at the start of the game, will be filled in over time as you remember your past. What a neat concept! And when we finally decided to explore this game this series we found out very quickly that this game was much more and very different than what we suspected.

Nibiru is home to millions of humans who have lived in this artificial environment for as long as their recorded history. The exact length of time is kept vague but it’s alluded to be in the thousands, possibly tens of thousands, of years. Nibiru provides all the air, water, food, and gravity that humans need to survive and clustered in and around massive hollow spheres called Vaults they have built their city states each with unique cultures and customs. The further from the core of Nibiru, where the gravity is closest to Earth and the majority of humans live in and live in mostly luxury, the more alien and strange and inhospitable becomes. There are a lot of questions about Nibiru and no answers will be found in the rulebook. To answer them you’ll have to explore Nibiru as a Vagabond.

Remember Your Origin Stories

The Vagabonds are a strange class of people in Nibiru. They show up in every corner of the station, always without any memory of where they come from. Confused and vulnerable they find a way to survive among the humans who call this strange station home. And then they begin to recall those memories. And sometimes those memories aren’t always… human. Through playing the game you can declare certain dice rolls to be resolved through a flashback. By remembering something about your past you grant your character a permanent boost to a skill and if you remember enough times you can unlock almost supernatural abilities called Revelations. The quest to uncover your memories will also uncover the secrets of Nibiru, which will always be unique to your game group every time.

This is an incredible world to explore with a journaling-centric character creation mechanic (The MEMOs system) to help you craft a unique story for your characters.

Special Thanks

Special thanks to Modiphius Entertainment for sending us a copy of Nibiru back when they were shipping the game and today you can get your own copy now directly from Arukana Media or on DriveThruRPG

In Shanty Hunters, you set out to capture and return rogue sea shanties back to shore. Using the gumshoe engine, each game generates it’s challenge and investigation around the lyrics of the sea shanty you’re trying to claim. It’s a wild idea and perfect for groups looking for a short one-short or limited run campaign to give yourself a break from a longer game you’re currently playing.

The Kickstarter launches on November 2nd and you can visit the page right now to set your reminder by visiting kickstarter.com/projects/1395430458/shanty-hunters

19 Dec 2017Ashes of the Empire (Part 4)01:03:55

History would call this time the Iron Blockade.

The Emperor has been assassinated -- And proof has been provided by Grand Admiral Thrawn. The regional governors fight for the scraps that remain.

In the Greater Javin Area, in the Anoat Sector, hangs a planet called Nethoin. Official communications for everyone but the Empire are blocked. The people are starting to get anxious, they've begun hoarding the essentials as store shelves quickly become barren. Gang activity and smugglers are becoming brazen with alarming swiftness, as businesses and private citizens alike begin to turn to grey areas of the law in order to get food, clean water, and life-saving medications that have all but disappeared.

Things are escalating quickly, and now Governor Adelhard is dead. Imperial Forces now look to Grand Admiral Thrawn who assumes command.

Which is where the Terrible Warriors come in.

Taking on the role of a group of mercenaries (mostly chaotic alignment) Tom, Derek, Conal, Mike and Justin swagger into Freeport and already start derailing the plot right on the deck of the ship. Set many years after the events of Rocket Resistance 2 we set aside the unwieldy rules from Pokemon Tabletop and embrace a custom made Fiasco playset for our 3rd chapter in the Rocket Resistance saga.

18 Feb 2021Meet The Makers: Francesco Nepitello (The One Ring)00:34:52
Today in a special feature of Meet The Makers, Justin connects with Francesco Nepitello, the co-creator of The One Ring, to talk about the ongoing kickstarter success for it’s second edition, partnering with Free League Games, and the unique foundations of the Lord of the Rings mythology in crafting their game.

From Wargames to Boardgames to Role Playing Games

Francesco shares with us his past and how he came to fall in love with role playing games. From early days in Venice playing wargames with his brother to the lucky happenstance of getting to meet a legendary game designer and coming to recognize the joy in developing games himself. Francesco is also one of the three creators behind the War of the Ring strategy boardgame and in 2011 co-created the first edition of The One Ring.

There And Back Again, A Game Designers Tale

For years fans of The One Ring have been waiting on a second edition, a new book that would streamline the old rules and provide a more cohesive experience and iron out what Francesco himself calls the “fiddly bits” of the game. Promises of a second edition and of a Moria campaign setting have gone unanswered as Francesco and his team have battled through complications with their old publisher. But those days are behind them now as they’ve found a new home with the prestigious Free League Games (Forbidden Lands, Tales from the Loop). Their attention to detail and connections with award winning artists and writers have made a perfect match for Francesco’s desire to serve up the sort Second Edition that The One Ring deserves.

Language Is Key

Francesco recognizes the unique qualities of the Lord of the Rings as a setting and understands that at the core of Tolkien’s work was a love of language. Which is why he shares us how the mechanics of the game are all informed by the language of the game, from the names of skills and stats, to the three core pillars of the game (Journeys, Councils, and Combat). And even if certain other world famous tabletop RPGs also use three pillars to describe their gameplay and dice mechanics that seem suspiciously similar, Francesco will kindly point out that they had it printed in the One Ring before they did. It wouldn’t be the first time Lord of the Rings has helped inspired tabletop games

23 Dec 2020Spotlight: The Critshow00:42:20

Today in a Terrible Warriors Podcast Spotlight, Justin connects with Rev from The Critshow!

The Critshow is in their 3rd season of playing Monster of the Week but that wasn't what they had originally intended to do. Days before they had planned to launch their pathfinder actual play podcast they sat down and recorded a dummy session using Monster of the Week as a stand-in game. After recording the tech demo they realized they had stumbled up the real show they wanted to make.

The Critshow has since expanded to include Tales from the Omniverse, a series travelling between multiple words and game rules, and have invited developers of the games they're playing to join them on the show. Currently their working closely with the creator of Rapscallion as they play through a Patreon exclusive campaign called Perilous Tides.

Rev has put a lot of thought into the show he's producing and the intentions behind that show and I'm sure you're going to love listening to The Critshow as much as I have.

500 years have passed since the bloody war that gave the wall it's name. The blood may be gone but the name remains, separating two nations forever.

North of the Blood Wall...

A compassionate half-elf, a courageous barbarian, a halfling rogue, and a young and inexperienced wizard start out in a tavern, as such adventures always do, and quickly catch word that the king's convoy has been attacked by orcs. As farmers and locals step up to the king's defence word arrives that the five orc tribes are organizing for war...

12 Oct 2021Symbaroum 05: Blightborn00:56:56

It’s too late. It’s too late for the elves to stop it. It’s too late for the caravan to escape it. It’s too late for Bellun. It’s almost too late for Ludo.

All they can do now is face the darkness and hope the light still still shine long enough to defeat The Blightborn.

Spoiler warning: This episode includes content from The Promised Land adventure included in the Symbaroum core rulebook.

Abominations can not be reasoned with. They exist only to devour the living. They will never stop. They will never rest. All you can do is run or fight. And if you run it will chase you and you will have to fight anyways. The Iron Pact tried to stop it. Now they must work with the Caravan to defeat the man once known as Bellun.

18 Jan 2022Me and Steve Talk RPGs with Jay Little01:29:11

Today we’re going to do something a little bit different. We’re on a short break and before we return with new recordings of our tabletop sessions but before we return we wanted to bring to your attention our friends over at “Me and Steve Talk RPGs”

We’re helping each out by hosting a feed swap. A few weeks ago they hosted the first episode of our Symbaroum campaign, At The Foot of the Titans, and now this week we’re returning the favour by hosting an interview that they conducted with, TTRPG system designer, Jay Little.

Me and Steve Talk RPGs was born out of those conversations that inevitably happen in the parking lot or driveway outside AFTER the gaming sessions. The two Steve’s host a podcast that is a grab bag of TTRPG related topics, stories, tips and tricks with interviews with makers and shakers from our community. Just like us they release new episodes every Tuesday so if you like what you’re about to hear check them out and follow and subscribe to their podcast wherever it is you like to listen.

In this episode, from the Me and Steve Talk RPGs podcast, the two Steves meet with Jay Little, a system designer who has worked on Warhammer Fantasy Rolplaying, FFG Star Wars, and also designed the 2d20 system for Modiphious, which you might recall powered our Star Trek: Adventures games… so he’s left an indelible mark on the ttrpg world.

Enjoy the listen, and we’ll be back next week when we return from our extended holiday break with our own actual play session playing Darla Burrow’s “Dear Great Cuthulu, PLEASE Stop Giving Me Super Powers!”

29 Oct 2021Meet the Makers: Craig Campbell (Secrets of the Vibrant Isle)00:44:29
Justin connects with Craig Campbell to talk about his “cozy gaming” solo RPG, Secrets of the Vibrant Isle.

The pandemic era of gaming has seen a lot of us forced to spend time alone. And if you weren’t fortunate enough to have a good internet connection and a quiet space to connect you might not have been able to replace your old gaming group with a virtual one. Perhaps that’s why there’s been a rising interest in the genre of sole RPGs.

In the Secrets of the Vibrant Isle you will play a person who has chosen to sail out to this mystical place, you explore the terrain and meet it’s denizens and after four weeks of in-game time they will decide if you are allowed to remain on the Vibrant Isle or be cast away. Craig will share with us how he came to create the game, some of the design challenges he had to overcome, and what you can expect if you decide to pick up this book for your next evening of alone time.

The Kickstarter is happening right now and runs until November 3rd, so there’s still time to support this unique game. You can visit the kickstertarter page by following this link or visiting https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1582756696/secrets-of-the-vibrant-isle?ref=dy7mn1

Be warned, we are going to tear Shakespeare's most famous play to shreds.

07 Nov 2017Ashes of the Empire (Part 1)00:59:09

History would call this time the Iron Blockade.

The Emperor has been assassinated -- or has he? People in back alley watering holes are beginning to whisper that the Death Star really has been destroyed -- no, really, they've seen it! There's only one thing for certain; regardless of who's really dead out there in space, the civil war rages on.

Things are escalating quickly, and the Imperials, particularly Governor Adelhard, are getting visibly nervous. Extra Imperial forces are brought in to reinforce whatever dwindling supplies are left.

Which is where the Terrible Warriors come in.
