22 May 2019Gerald Home and Simon J. Williamson: (Even More) Tales from Jabba's Palace00:17:50

This is my special TALES FROM JABBA'S PALACE conversation with previous guests Gerald Home (Tessek and a Mon Calamari officer) and Simon J. Wiliamson (Max Rebo and a Gamorrean Guard).

We got to talk to them again, this time in person, to tell some of our favorite stories, as well as quite a few new ones in this special anniversary episode.

I can’t really believe it but, yes, this is the one year anniversary of this podcast. I wanted to take some time at the beginning of the episode to thank each and every one of our listeners, guests, partners and sponsors for making this first year a dream come true.

To celebrate, I partnered with the good people at Order 66 Toys to make this happen. If you are in the Dallas area today, May 22 2019, definitely swing by Order 66 to visit Gerald and Simon from 12:00-6:00PM today.

Mr. Longworth’s stories and charm are absolutely incredible, and this interview is one of my favorites ever. I hope you enjoy it.

03 Aug 2022Ken Cunningham and David Shayne: Behind the LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation00:18:37

I had the opportunity, through Lucasflm, to talk to the director, Ken Cunningham and Executive Producer / Writer, David Shayne of the upcoming LEGO Star Wars Summer Vacation special.

This is a really quick, really fun deep dive into the newest addition of the LEGO universe, and I had an absolute blast talking to them both. (To set the scene for all you audio listeners, yes, I was wearing a tank-top and a Skywalker Ranch butter dish Hawaiian shirt.)

Sit back and enjoy the vibes.

Thank you so much to Ken and David, as well as Lillian and Rachel at Lucasfilm for coordinating all of this. The special is so much fun and comes out this Friday, August 5, on Disney+. Highly recommended on my end.

We have some cool episodes coming up very soon, including one with Senior Editor at Del Rey Books, Tom Hoeler. (And maybe a couple of surprises too.)

23 Mar 2022Frank Ordaz: Tales from the ROTJ Matte Department00:29:11

Frank Ordaz was a matte painter for Return of the Jedi, as well as for movies like Temple of Doom, E.T. Star Treks II-IV and many more.

An incredibly talented painter, Mr. Ordaz is such a fascinating conversationalist and brings to life a lot of the behind the scenes stories from the making of Return of the Jedi and beyond.

I really had such a blast getting to delve deeper into his stories and the matte department. To check out his beautiful current work, head to ordazart.com

17 Apr 2024Warren Fu: Prequel Concept Artist and Designer of General Grievous01:12:39

Today is my conversation with legendary prequel concept artist, Warren Fu, live from South by Southwest 2024.

We dive into Warren’s incredible contributions to these movies, including MagnaGuards, The High Republic's vector ships, and, of course, General Grievous. From there, we take a deep dive into his wildly prolific music video career, and especially his work with Daft Punk. This is such an incredible conversation and may truly be my favorite interview yet.

Thank you so much again to Warren for his time and flexibility while he was in Austin, and allowing me to come to his hotel armed with art books and action figures for reference. His incredible portfolio can be found here.

A huge thank you, as well, to Li-Wei from Partizan for helping coordinate this, and an EXTRA huge thanks to guest producer Alyssa Vidales, who absolutely crushed it and helped make this live recording go super smoothly

In other news … I co-wrote an official Star Wars book. I cannot believe it. Star Wars Encyclopedia from DK Books is coming out this fall and can be pre-ordered now. More info to come, believe me.

29 Aug 2018Dave Barclay: Puppeteer for Yoda and Jabba the Hutt00:40:40

Dave Barclay worked on both The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, bringing two of the most iconic Star Wars characters ever to life. Beginning as a sculptor working with Stuart Freeborn, Mr. Barclay was then quickly ushered into the Henson world of puppets, controlling Yoda alongside Frank Oz. Returning to the galaxy to work as Jabba's right hand, Mr. Barclay has had a storied career in movies (including great work on Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?).

We go through as much as we can!

We want to give special thanks to Derek Maki and Coolwaters Productions for setting this interview up. For more information about upcoming appearances (as well as how to purchase autographs), check out CoolwatersProds.com

Mr. Barclay's next appearance will be at the Central Canada Comic Con, from on October 26th-28th, 2018 at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg, MB.

10 Mar 2022Sandy Dhuyvetter: Making Boba's Original Costume, AKA "Momma Fett"00:21:06

Sandy Dhuyvetter is an artist, musician and communicator, who is affectionately known as “Momma Fett” … Mrs. Dhuyvetter was tasked with the painting of the original Boba Fett costumes, and added so many of the details we’ve come to know from the bounty hunter, including wookiee braids, and more. Mrs. Dhuyvetter is such a delight, and is a wonderful storyteller. You all are going to really love this.

To see everything we talked about for yourself, head to her Twitch channel, AllMusic Considered, for some wonderful music and fun.

23 Sep 2020Niki Botelho: Teek in Ewoks - The Battle for Endor00:13:03

We're LIVE and talking to Teek herself, Niki Botelho from The Battle for Endor.

This is a pretty short, fairly rare look inside making the second Ewok film, as well as Niki’s return as an Offworld Jawa in The Mandalorian ... and if that was her as Teek in the Star Tours boarding video. (And, of course, since this was recorded live, some of our audio is not as crisp as other episodes, but you’ll get over it.)

If you want even more Teek stories, head on over to the most recent episode of Blast Points, where there is almost 5 extra minutes of this interview, which I recorded to help celebrate their Ewok Movie Month.

And, of course, this episode would not be possible without our friends at Galactic Productions. Head to their website for future appearances, as well as a really great stock of online autographs: galacticproductionsevents.com

Next week: my very rare conversation with prequel production designer Gavin Bouquet, who I don’t think has talked about Star Wars in nearly 20 years. Wild stuff.

02 Sep 2020Aaron McBride: Designing Maw Monsters, Fathiers and Maul's Robotic Legs00:46:08

His work has spanned the prequels, the sequels, the spin-offs, Star Wars Insider covers and even the introduction of Darth Maul’s robotic legs, so it was a real thrill to be able to dive into the career of Aaron McBride, as well as his process and his inspirations.

Some topics discussed: Blade Runner and Ridley Scott, interning on The Phantom Menace, working with Steven Spielberg on A.I. and Minority Report and what organic beef jerkey has to do with the skeleton pirates from Pirates of the Caribbean.

With Star Wars, we dive further into his work on Revenge of the Sith (ballet dancers, the model shop making lava for Mustafar), Rogue One (working with John Knoll, designing K-2SO), The Last Jedi (Canto Bight, Fathiers), Solo (Maw Monster) and ILMxLAB (Vader Immortal).

02 Dec 2020David Dozoretz: Pre-Visualization of Dewbacks, Podraces and Droid Factories01:02:54

David Dozoretz spearheaded the pre-visualization work on the Special Editions and the first two Star Wars prequels, as pre-vis effects supervisor. He is such an immense talent and has such incredible passion for his work, so it was a real honor.

This is such a fun episode, a deep dive into what it was like to be working at Skywalker Ranch ... while they were literally changing how movies we being made forever. (Also stick around for a John Knoll egg toss picnic story.)

To see more of his work (including the effects reel from The Phantom Menace we were talking about), head to his website: https://www.daviddozoretz.com/

This Friday, at 7:30 PM Central, we will be live again on Scener.com, breaking down Episode 6 of The Mandalorian Season 2. 22 Apr 2020Duwayne Dunham: Editing for George Lucas and David Lynch00:38:24

Duwayne Dunham is an editor, a director .... and he is the original, original Boba Fett.

Whether working with Marcia Lucas, watching Eraserhead with Stanley Kubrick or his multiple decade working relationship with David Lynch, I was blown away by the talent and enthusiasm that Mr. Dunham has for his art, during this interview. And, yes, we talk about The Clone Wars episodes he directed, too.

And, if you haven’t watched Twin Peaks: The Return yet ... buckle up and get ready to have your life changed.

Next week, gearing up for the end of the Siege of Mandalore, is a Star Wars 101 deep dive with the legendary Sam Witwer. You won’t want to miss it.

15 Aug 2018Nick Gillard: Stunt Coordinator for the Prequel Trilogy, Lightsaber Fights00:20:23

It was a real treat talking to today's guest: Nick Gillard, stunt coordinator for the Prequel Trilogy and father of the modern lightsaber technique. He is one of the unsung heroes of the making of these Star Wars movies.

Mr. Gillard was so humble and so gracious, literally pulling over during a long car ride to talk to Talking Bay 94. During our short conversation, we get into a lot, from the skill of Ray Park to the twelve minute uncut version of the Mustafar fight to some of the lost duels which were never even filmed.

But, this is our first episode of SEASON 2 ... so of course we don't just talk about Star Wars ... we hear his incredible stories from working on Captain EO, Ghostbusters 2, The Ewok Adventure.

23 May 2018Stephen Costantino: Gamorrean Guard on Jabba's Sail Barge00:28:52

This episode is the second part of our 35th Anniversary retrospective of Return of the Jedi. We talk to Stephen Costantino, who traveled to the Yuma desert with his bandmate Corey Dee Williams, thrown into what was then called Blue Harvest. We talk about his time on the set as a Gamorrean Guard, as well as his interactions with Peter Mayhew, Carrie Fisher and Kenny Baker.

Check out Stephen's music (Gamorrean Sound), including the Stormtrooper-esque jam, GET EM ALL, that we talk about at the end of the episode, on his Soundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/stephen-costantino/sets/stephen-costantino-1

26 Sep 2018Jim Swearingen: Creator of the Original STAR WARS Action Figures00:31:17

Designing the original figures and vehicles, Jim Swearingen had a huge effect on our perception of the original Star Wars. From 1976-79, this Kenner project became Swearingen's project, witnessing portions of the film being made and even attending the first public showing.

Straight from an episode of Netflix's Toys That Made Us, Mr. Swearingen takes us through that early period, before Star Wars was the phenomenon we know and love.

20 Feb 2019Michael Carter: The Man Who Played Bib Fortuna in RETURN OF THE JEDI00:14:59

"Die wanna wanga?"

Michael Carter portrayed the Major Domo of Jabba the Hutt ... the creepy, great and wonderful Twi'lek: Bib Fortuna. Live from Madness Comics in Plano, TX, we got to talk to him all about working with Richard Marquand on the set of Return of the Jedi.

In addition to his work on Star Wars, I couldn't help but ask him about his iconic scene in John Landis' American Werewolf in London (which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ss0nT5DGHw).

Seriously, for how short this episode is, we pack in some great, great stuff.

10 Apr 2024John Jackson Miller: Writer of THE LIVING FORCE and KNIGHTS OF THE OLD REPUBLIC00:44:03

Today is my conversation with one of my favorite Star Wars authors, John Jackson Miller.

We talk all about the beginnings of his career, as well as his iconic work on the Knights of the Old Republic, Kenobi, A New Dawn and his latest novel, Star Wars: The Living Force (out now!). It’s a fantastic conversation and I can’t wait for you to hear it.

The Living Force is now available anywhere you buy your books, and I highly recommend it: https://amzn.to/3PZ3suK

I also recommend delving into his KOTOR run, especially if you have a Marvel Unlimited subscription. Just awesome stuff.

Next week is my live conversation with prequel concept artist Warren Fu

This is another very special episode of Talking Bay 94, to celebrate the finale of ANDOR. A few weeks ago, thanks to Lucasfilm, we got to participate in roundtable interviews with the crew of the upcoming Disney+ series, ANDOR.

We got about 30 minutes each with composer Nicholas Britell, Supervising Sound Editor David Acord and Visual Effects Producer TJ Falls, and Production Designer Luke Hull and Costume Designer Michael Wilkinson.

It was a huge thrill, obviously, and I hope you all enjoy as much as I did.

09 Dec 2020Dan Perri: Designer of STAR WARS' Opening Crawl00:38:30

Dan Perri is an iconic title designer, who, well, created the opening crawl of the original Star Wars.

You know, the crawl.

His work spans decades and directors, and I try to tackle as many as I can: from William Friedkin (The Exorcist) and Martin Scorcese (Taxi Driver, Gangs of New York) to Steven Spielberg (Close Encounters) and, of course, George Lucas.

We dive deep into his process and his experiences, from his early years being inspired by Saul Bass to designing the titles for the Suspiria remake. To be the first to find out when his book is coming out, head to www.danperri.com.

08 Oct 2021Rest in Peace: Gerald Home (1950 - 2021)00:32:33

Hey everyone, it's Brandon. It was announced yesterday that Gerald Home, who portrayed Tessek ("Squid Head") and a Mon Calamari Officer in Return of the Jedi, passed away.

I am very lucky to have gotten to know Gerald ... interviewed him three times, gone to dinner with him, emailed back and forth for years, and played Cards Against Humanity late into the night.

He was a good man and an incredible part of the Star Wars community. And he is intrinsic to this show, always recommending his friends and being such a supporter. He called this "the best interview he had ever done" and it might have been because I heavily edited it, but I am grateful for it and for him.

Rest in peace.

29 Apr 2020Sam Witwer: Playing Starkiller, Voicing Maul and Hyping The Siege of Mandalore00:55:04

You may know Sam Witwer as Starkiller from THE FORCE UNLEASHED and, of course, the voice of Maul in THE CLONE WARS, REBELS and SOLO.

But, right before we talked (just a few days before the first episode of THE SIEGE OF MANDALORE premiered), he tweeted "this may be the best thing we've ever done", so we had to talk about that first.

After that, though, just buckle up for almost an hour of incredible stories, lore and the importance of "George Lucas Star Wars".

You can find him on Twitter at @SamWitwer and on Instagram at @switwer1, as well as his website: samwitwer.com. His newest album, REVENGE OF THE CRASHTONES is some great music to blast while working from home.

Until next time, stay tuned, leave a five star review …

And May the Force Be with You.

05 Aug 2020Scott Trowbridge: Imagineering Star Wars Galaxy's Edge for Disney Parks00:34:18

Today I’m talking to Scott Trowbridge, Portfolio Creative Executive and Studio Leader at Walt Disney Imagineering, who helped spearhead Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and the land we now know as Black Spire Outpost.

It was a huge honor to learn more about his background, story and experiences, as him and his team created a tangible Star Wars world from scratch, with some fascinating insight into building Batuu.

I want to give a special thanks, as well, to Kevin at Disney Imagineering for his help coordinating, promoting and making this all possible!

Upcoming episodes will include incredible conversations with Aaron McBride, Noah Segan, Silas Carson, and so many more!

And, quick announcement: since August would have been a time for us to all meet at Star Wars Celebration, and I would have had swag to give out to you all, I’m instead giving away a ton of rare, signed stuff online, instead. Head to our Twitter account (www.twitter.com/TalkingBay94) to see how you can win by just leaving a 5-star review this month for the show.

05 Jul 2019Galactic Innovations: Marcia Lucas, Ben Burtt, Dennis Muren, John Knoll and John Dykstra01:08:24

So, I did something dumb.

When The Academy announced a panel featuring Marcia Lucas (!!!!), Ben Burtt (!!!!), John Dykstra, Dennis Muren, John Knoll, Harrison Ellenshaw (TB94 Episode 18), Richard Edlund (TB94 Episode 19) and many more ... I bought a ticket. And then it sold out.

The event was in Los Angeles on a Thursday and I, well, live in Dallas. So I booked a flight, flew out to California and ended up having the time of my life.

Here's a fun, quick listen about my trip, both my experience and some snippets from the panel. It is probably the closest I'll ever actually get to getting Marcia Lucas on this show.

And definitely check out The Academy and all of the great events they are doing: https://www.oscars.org

23 Jun 2021Katy Kartwheel: Swinging from the Circus to Portray Rio Durant00:34:41

Katy Kartwheel is incredible: a multi-talented circus performer and actress, she portrayed many characters in the recent Star Wars movies, including Rio Durant in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

She was such a delight to talk to, full of a deep love for her craft and incredible stories from her time on set, working as a creature and droid performer for The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi and Solo.

Check out her website, www.circuspassion.co.uk for more information about her upcoming projects.

My interview with legendary producer Robert Watts is in this month’s issue of the Star Wars Insider #203, so definitely pick it up and let me know what you think! It is really a dream come true.

First up, we're talking to David Ankrum, voice of Wedge Antilles, as well as various voices in Rogue One.

The second interview of the day is with Mark Dodson, the man responsible for the most iconic laugh in the galaxy: Salacious Crumb. If you love stories about Ben Burtt and raccoons (and tid-bits from Gremlins, the Ewok TV Movies and more), this is the interview for you.

01 Dec 2021Scott Squires: Visual Effects Supervisor for THE PHANTOM MENACE00:46:29

Today I'm joined by the wonderful Scott Squires, who might be known to Star Wars fans as one of the three groundbreaking Visual Effects Supervisors for The Phantom Menace.

His career is inspiring and really incredible, ranging from working with Douglas Trumbull on Close Encounters of the Third Kind (where he developed the Cloud Tank Effect) and receiving Academy Award nominations for The MaskDragonheart, and, of course, Episode I.

Audio is a little funky on my end, since I was moving studios at the time, so please bear with us! It's a fantastic conversation.

Chris Bartlett is not only is the official "Media C-3PO", but also has had numerous roles in these first two seasons of The Mandalorian, including bounty hunter Q9-0 and the flute-playing Kubaz from the very first episode.

His story of turning his cosplaying and costume-building hobby into a profession is super inspiring, and his stories of working with people like Anthony Daniels, Carl Weathers, Werner Herzog …and Barack Obama, are such a delight. You’re going to love this one.

On Black Friday, we'll be dropping our newest line of merch, featuring restocks of old shirts, as well as new items I’m really excited about (including an “Edited by Marcia Lucas” credits shirt and a reproduction of an Empire Strikes Back sound crew shirt that you’re not going to believe). 17 Feb 2021Don Bies Returns: An Inside Look at the Lucasfilm Archives and the Special Editions01:18:40

Don Bies came on this podcast way back on Episode #5 (!). If you haven’t listened to our previous conversation, definitely give it a download first, to hear all about his incredible career … because this episode is me asking all the questions I wish I had asked him 3 years ago.

Japanese Panasonic commercials (and adventures with Peter Mayhew + previous guest Niki Botelho)… the 1988 Marin County Fair … the Special Editions … and so, so much more.

I think I broke my mic (sorry) from laughing so hard.

It truly means the world that Mr. Bies came back on the show, and that he took a chance on this podcast 3 years ago … and, of course, his stories are just the best, if you can’t tell by my reactions.

Keep the Gaslight Burning is now streaming on Amazon Prime: https://www.amazon.com/Keep-Gaslight-Burning-Markie-Post/dp/B07K1FQ9C5

Next week, Episode #99 (!), is with ILM legend David Carson, who was mentioned several times in this episode. It's a great one ... he designed the Gamorrean Guards!

In this lead up to Episode #100 (which is crazy to even say) I would really appreciate some new reviews on Apple. If you can leave a 5-star review of the show right here on your favorite podcast app, or on Podchaser: podchaser.com/TalkingBay94

13 Jun 2018Don Bies: The Man Behind Both Boba Fett and R2-D200:54:06

Today we're talking to Don Bies, a man of many talents and one of the few to make an indelible mark on all of the original six Star Wars movies. Model maker, R2-D2 puppeteer and droid unit supervisor, Don has some great stories, ranging from the Japanese Panasonic commercials to (correctly) designing Darth Vader's helmet in Revenge of the Sith.

From Boba Fett to original Biths (to Indiana Jones!), he's played them all! We even delve a little bit into the great R2-D2: Beneath the Dome, a mockumentary, that you can watch online: https://www.starwars.com/video/beneath-the-dome-part-one

We also get into his latest project, Keep the Gaslight Burning, an awesome horror film that he produced, alongside some truly great Star Wars alums and talents. For more Gaslight news, check out KeeptheGaslightBurning.com or follow them on Twitter: www.twitter.com/GaslightGhost

06 Jan 2021Paul Duncan: On the Creation of THE STAR WARS ARCHIVES and Interviewing George Lucas01:23:28

Paul Duncan is a writer, historian, and the author of the two volumes of Taschen's Star Wars Archives.

Mr. Duncan’s research, insights, and his exclusive multi-day interviews with George Lucas, himself, make these books a must-have for any Star Wars fan ... and this interview, if I do say so myself, a must-listen.

Listening back on this interview while editing, I was again just so impressed (and obviously so inspired) by Mr. Duncan, and I hope to one day be half the interviewer, researcher and writer that he is.

To buy Mr. Duncan’s Star Wars books from Taschen: https://www.taschen.com/pages/en/catalogue/film/all/01170/facts.the_star_wars_archives_19771983.htm

26 Apr 2023Amy Richau: LIVE from Star Wars Celebration 202300:53:28

Today is our 150th episode and it is special because its a full recording of the LIVE official panel from Star Wars Celebration London 2023.

Making it extra special is our guest, Amy Richau, an incredible author and one of my personal biggest inspirations. She is the author of many Star Wars books, including I LOVE YOU. I KNOW. and the recently released, much-anticipated STAR WARS TIMELINES.

As a bonus, the last ten minutes of the episode include our very silly "DON'T LET ME BUY THIS ... LIVE", featuring my wife, Maggie. It's a very visual portion, so apologies in advance.

It is a true honor to get to talk with him about his career, from USC and Alfred Hitchcock to the Yuma Desert and forests of Endor.

We are also joined by Consulting Editor of Mr. Kazanjian's biography, the great Brandon Alinger, who offers some behind-the-scenes tidbits about the making of the book, alongside the late J.W. Rinzler.

17 Apr 2019Rob Bredow: The Visual Effects of SOLO (from L3-37 to Hyperspace)00:27:33

SVP, Executive Creative Director and Head of ILM, Rob Bredow was also the co-producer of SOLO: A Star Wars Story, working side-by-side with Ron Howard to bring the story (and its visual effects to life).

We go through it all: L3-37, working with Tippett Studios with the new Dejarik pieces and, of course, the breath-taking in-camera work for hyperspace and more. We discuss his previous work with ILMxLab, as well as his vision for the future of the legendary company.

If you’ve ever listened to this podcast before, you know how much I love the fascinating stories of the puppeteers and mime artists, especially from Jedi. And this is no exception.

03 Nov 2021Ian Whyte: Stories from Behind the Mask of Moroff00:27:16

Ian Whyte didn't mean to become an actor: he started as a professional basketball player, before a call to play the Predator changed his life.

From there, he starred in fantastic films, including as the Engineer in Prometheus, numerous roles in Game of Thrones (including Wun Wun the Giant), and in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Of course, his roles in Star Wars are equally fantastic, including the furry Moroff in Rogue One, Bollie Prindel in The Force Awakens, and performances in The Last Jedi and Solo!

21 May 2020THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK at 40: An Anniversary Celebration00:23:36

Today May 21, 2020 is the 40th anniversary of the best movies (and one of my favorite movies) of all time: The Empire Strikes Back.

With the two year anniversary of this podcast happening this week, as well, I thought it would be fun for me to go back through the past 65 or so episodes of this show and pull some of my favorite moments from some of my favorite guests, as they talk about what it was like, firsthand, to work on the sequel to Star Wars.

If you know me at all, this look back focuses mostly on the special effects: Industrial Light and Magic’s move from Van Nuys to San Rafael, the Hoth sequences, the Tauntauns, the walkers, and go motion.

I’ll be introducing the previous guests who are talking throughout, but just know that it is a combination of ILM wizards, legendary editors and unsung heroes. I’m talking about a total of 16 Academy Awards won in this 25 minute episode.

So let’s all just buckle up and take a trip back even before that 1980 release, before we knew who Luke’s father was and before anyone of us had ever even seen The Empire Strikes Back.

Also included in our conversation: his first time working with Sir Alex Guinness, as well as the camaraderie and friendships forged on the set of a galaxy far, far away.

06 Jul 2022David Menkin: The Voice of LEGO Luke Skywalker00:17:38

Today, I’m talking to newcomer to the Star Wars universe, David Menkin. David recently voiced Luke Skywalker (!!!) in the incredibly popular and well received LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. We dive into his inspirations and the journey to voicing one of the most popular characters in the galaxy.

The audio is slightly choppy but this is a fun, quick, wonderful conversation with a very talented and very enthusiastic actor. I hope you all enjoy.

Thank you so much to Mr. Menkin for coming on the show and telling his stories. Look for him soon at a convention near you, as well as on his Twitter account: twitter.com/DavidMenkin

03 Mar 2021Tony McVey: Sculpting Salacious, Sy Snootles, Jar Jar, The Child, and More00:32:26

Today is our 100th episode of Talking Bay 94, and I’m talking to the legendary Tony McVey: model maker, sculptor and character designer, who has worked on three generations of Star Wars.

The designer of Salacious Crumb and sculptor of Sy Snootles, the Rancor and Gamorrean Guards for Return of the Jedi, Mr. McVey returned to bring Jar Jar, Geonosians, and Yoda to three dimensions for the prequels, and then once more to The Mandalorian, to help design already-iconic creatures like The Child and Kuiil.

I can think of no better person to be our 100th interview.

For a more in-depth look at his process and creations, definitely go to his Facebook page, which is jam packed with incredible models and sculptures: https://www.facebook.com/tony.mcvey.777

And so yeah, that is our 100th episode. I cannot believe that we’ve gotten to this point and to this milestone.

I want to take this time to thank so many people: our guests, who have been so generous and gracious, our partners, who have helped make a lot of these interviews possible, and, of course, all of you, our fans, for supporting the show, listening every week, telling friends, reviewing us on Apple, and buying the merch.

I, Brandon, want to especially thank Jason, the producer of this show, who tirelessly works behind the scenes with recordings and video call set ups and all the incredible graphics you see every week. He was the first person I texted with this idea, way back in 2017, and I am so grateful that he’s been on this journey with me ever since.

It has meant much to hear from you all and to be welcomed into the Star Wars community with such open arms, over the past 3 years. And really, I just can’t wait to see what happens next.

05 Aug 2021Rest in Peace: J.W. Rinzler (1962 - 2021)00:43:13

Hey everyone, it’s Brandon. It was announced yesterday that the incredible Jonathan Rinzler (J.W. Rinzler) had passed away late last month.

It is no secret that him and his books were a direct inspiration for this show … and he was actually one of the first people I ever reached out to, asking to appear on it. He was incredibly gracious with his time and came onto a podcast that did not even have a published episode yet.

I wanted to put this interview, our 6th episode ever, back into the feed, unedited, complete with the sounds of doing dishes and cats in the background, and me being vocally very nervous and very new at this interviewing thing, and just everything else, because I just so thankful I got the chance to talk with him and thank him, even for just these 40 minutes.

If you haven’t already, pick up some of his non-Star Wars pieces, including his Making of Planet of the Apes, Making of Alien, and his book about the space race, All-Up. His biography of Star Wars producer Howard Kazanjian comes out this fall, and has been my most anticipated book of the year. He will be  missed.

Rest in peace, thank you for everything, and may the Force be with you.

09 Oct 2024Ahmed Best: The Man Behind Jar Jar Binks00:08:47

Today is an interview I have wanted to record since I was 8 years old – the incredibly talented Ahmed Best. He, of course, played Jar Jar Binks beginning with Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, as well as Jedi Master Kelleran Beq beginning with Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge and most recently in Star Wars: The Mandalorian.

He changed movie-making forever, and is currently working to change the rest of the world too.

This was recorded live at this summer’s Rebel Scum Con and was a true dream come true.

Thank you so much to Mr. Best for taking the time to impart such passion, wisdom, and inspiration in such a short time. Thank you as well to manager Zach Avino and Alliance Appearance Agency for making this happen. Their next appearance together will be at SpaceCon San Antonio.

In other news … I co-wrote an official Star Wars book. I cannot believe it. Star Wars Encyclopedia from DK Books is coming out next month and can be pre-ordered now. More info to come, believe me.

08 Nov 2023Revenge of Tom Spina: Trips to the Lucasfilm Archives and the Art of Creature Maquettes00:57:00

Tom Spina, the mad man behind Regal Robot, returns to the show for a third time. Because of that, we go a little wild, talking about trips to Skywalker Ranch, the archives, and the just-announced, absolutely incredible, Phil Tippett Legacy Edition of the Rancor maquette. It’s always a good time when Tom comes around.

Thank you so much again to Tom for coming on the show and waxing poetic about the incredible work him and his team at Regal Robot are doing. If I did not gush enough, they are the best around.

The Phil Tippett Legacy Edition of the Rancor Maquette goes on sale next week … for all the details and some insane photos, head to regalrobot.com.

07 Feb 2024Judy Elkins: ILM Creature Shop, RETURN OF THE JEDI00:41:41

Today is a very special episode, featuring my conversation with ILM Creature Shop legend Judy Elkins. Judy is responsible for many iconic designs and sculptures for Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, including the infamous Yak Face.

This summer, I was honored to spend the day with her in Austin, Texas, as we went around to different museums and sculpture gardens that had inspired her while growing up, including the Elizabet Ney Museum and the Umlauf Sculpture Garden (where the works of her professor, Charles Umlauf, are on display). We also visited the gorgeous Littlefield Fountain on the University of Texas campus, that especially inspired her and her creature designing.

Some of those recordings are in this interview, spliced into our larger conversation about her incredible career. Photos and captions of the art we discussed can be found on our website.

Spending the day with her was so inspiring and one of my favorite memories of last year, as well as this entire podcast.

In other news … I co-wrote an official Star Wars book. I cannot believe it. Star Wars Encyclopedia from DK Books is coming out this fall and can be pre-ordered now. More info to come, believe me.

And, if you’re enjoying the show, please head to Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen to these episodes and leave us a five-star rating and review! It means the world.

That’s all for now … until next episode, stay tuned, leave s 5 star review, and May the Force Be with you.

There is so much to catch up on since the last time “she has spoken” on this show … way back on Episode 84.

27 Feb 2019Anthony Forrest: "Move Along" Sandtrooper and Luke's Friend Fixer00:36:57

Anthony Forrest played two different key roles in the original Star Wars. As a Sandtrooper on Mos Eisley, he was the first on-screen recipient of a Jedi mind trick. And, in the legendary Anchorhead deleted scenes, he stood out next to Biggs and Luke, as Fixer, to look to a potential space battle.

We talk about a lot, including his passion for music, as well as relationship with the fandom and conventions. He will be appearing in April at Celebration Chicago, which you can now purchase autograph / photo-op tickets for from Topps: https://store.epicphotoops.com/star-wars-celebration-chicago/2019/anthony-forrest

24 Mar 2021Alexander Freed: Crafting ALPHABET SQUADRON, the ROGUE ONE Novelization and THE OLD REPUBLIC00:41:59

Prolific Star Wars author, Alexander Freed has done so much, recently completing his Alphabet Squadron trilogy of novels.

I really loved this conversation, tracing his journey from Bioware’s The Old Republic to Dark Horse Comics to Star Wars Insider Short Stories to then, of course, full-length Star Wars novels.

And, whether it is his Rogue One novelization or his most recent book, Victory’s Price, an Alexander Freed Star Wars story is always one to be celebrated.

If this episode does not convince you to check out the Alphabet Squadron trilogy, I really don’t know what else would.

Thank you as well to Lauren and the PR team at Del Rey for helping set all of this up.

14 Oct 2020John Celestri: THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL Animator of Boba Fett00:23:24

The first time anyone caught a glimpse of the now infamous bounty hunter was in the 1978 Star Wars Holiday Special.

Yep. That one.

We talk to Boba Fett's animator, the great John Celestri all about it: how Lucas got involved, what their inspirations were, and just a ton of great stories. Some other topics include:

- Growing up wanting to be an animator (and being self-taught)

- Getting involved with Nelvana (known for Ewoks and Droids), as well as how George Lucas first heard about the studio through Cosmic Christmas

- Inspirations for the short ranging from Heavy Metal magazine and Moebius to Clint Eastwood

Paul Davids co-wrote the Jedi Prince series of books, best known for The Glove of Darth Vader, as well as characters like Trioculus, Zorba the Hutt … and, of course, the grandchild of Emperor Palpatine. And that was 30 years ago!

I grew up reading these books and so getting to talk about their creation was such a blast. (Mr. Davids sure knows how to tell a story.)

30 Oct 2019Phil Tippett: The Legendary VFX Artist, on the Cantina, AT-ATs and the Rancor00:31:05

We’re talking to one of my heroes, one of the people who has been at the very top of the list to have on this show from the very beginning ... two time Academy Award winner, the legend: Phil Tippett.

From the Cantina reshoots to the Dejarik chess table to the AT-AT stop motion to the ILM Return of the Jedi creature shop, Mr. Tippett was one of the driving forces of, not only the Star Wars world we know and love, but also the visual effects landscape as a whole.

It is really an honor to have him on the show. I haven’t stopped smiling since. It was literally a dream come true.

Be sure to visit MadGodMovie.com for information on how to watch his latest project and be sure to seek out Mad Dreams and Monsters, the new documentary about him, coming soon.

It’s been fifty episodes and I am so grateful to you all for the listens, support and love. This has been an incredible journey with you all and, really, we’re just getting started.

22 Jul 2018Timothy Zahn: Most Iconic Star Wars Author of All time00:26:39

In this very special episode, live from San Diego Comic Con, we are continuing our series focusing on the writers of the saga, by talking to the greatest one of all time: Timothy Zahn, the incredible author behind the seminal Thrawn Trilogy, as well as the upcoming Thrawn: Alliances.

We, of course, start at the very beginning, detailing his influences and his first interaction with Lucasfilm. From his initial creation of the Chiss villain to his reaction to his reintroduction into canon, you will not want to miss this conversation. We even dive into his dream projects for the saga, which legitimately gave me goosebumps.

Mr. Zahn will be appearing at Interabang Books in Dallas, Texas tomorrow (7/23/18) at 7PM. For more information about the signing, check out Interabang's website: www.InterabangBooks.com/event/thrawn-alliances-star-wars

For more information and updates about the rest of Mr. Zahn's tour schedule, promoting Thrawn: Allainces (including stops in Denver, Salt Lake City and Portland), check out the notes section on his Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/TimothyZahn/

We would like to thank Tom from Interabang Books for helping set this up, as well as David from Random House for making it happen. It was legitimately a dream come true.

29 Jul 2020Masi Oka: On Designing Effects for the Star Wars Prequels, and the "Hiro's Journey"00:34:42

You may know today's guest as Hiro from NBC’s HEROES, but Masi Oka also worked at Industrial Light & Magic as a Digital Effects Artist on the Star Wars prequels.

We dive deep into his career, both at ILM and about his start in acting. And we focus in on one of his biggest contributions to Attack of the Clones: the effects of the seismic blast on the asteroid belt.

What an incredible thrill it is to have been able to interview Mr. Oka, especially because his character of Hiro Nakamura meant so so much to me growing up. And, now that we’ve had both him and Greg Grunberg on the same show, maybe it’s just time for me to just spin off into a TALKING HEROES podcast.

Next week is my interview with Disney Imagineering’s Scott Trowbridge, all about the creation of Galaxy’s Edge. Buckle up.

It is always so appreciated if you can leave a 5-star review of the show right here on your favorite podcast app or on Podchaser: podchaser.com/TalkingBay94

21 Aug 2024John Morton: Luke's Co-Pilot Dak and Bespin Boba Fett00:12:08

Today is my conversation with the incredibly kind John Morton, who appeared as both Luke Skywalker’s Battle of Hoth co-pilot, Dak Ralter, and Boba Fett on Bespin, in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back.

This was recorded live at this summer’s Rebel Scum Con, and is full of great stories of Mr. Morton’s time in Star Wars, as well as The Shining.

It is always such an honor to talk with these Original Trilogy legends, and especially a man behind the mando mask.

A ton more episodes from Rebel Scum Con are coming VERY SOON, including Thaine Morris, Misty Rosas returning, Amy Allen, Michonne Bourriague, Nalini Krishan, and Ahmed Best so … stay tuned.

In other news … I co-wrote an official Star Wars book. I cannot believe it. Star Wars Encyclopedia from DK Books is coming out this fall and can be pre-ordered now. More info to come, believe me.

05 Sep 2018Greg Proops: Two-Headed Podrace Announcer and Comedian on WHOSE LINE IS IT ANYWAY?00:22:46

Greg Proops, who played Fode, one of the two heads of the Podrace announcer in The Phantom Menace, is on the show today. LIVE from the green room of the Addison Improv, he tells an incredible, hilarious story about his time in the Star Wars universe, from being cast to doing voiceover work in The Clone Wars.

(There is also an anecdote that will change the way you look at Harrison Ford in Last Crusade forever.) Hopefully, you get a kick out of it as much as we did! It's just a lot of fun.

Be sure to listen to his incredible podcast, The Smartest Man in the World on iTunes and check out GregProops.com for upcoming show dates (including stops in Toronto, Oregon and Washington). His act is really a blast.

04 Sep 2019Bill Slavicsek: Influential Writer of the West End STAR WARS RPG01:00:03

Today's conversation is with one of the most formative voices in Star Wars, as we know it today, Mr. Bill Slavicsek, writer, game designer and Creative Director for West End Games and Wizards of the Coast

From naming alien creatures like Ithorians, Quarrens and Sullastans to shaping what we now consider to be the “voice” of Star Wars, we take a fascinating look at the early Expanded Universe and the journey from the sourcebooks to The Clone Wars and Rebels.

If I didn’t gush enough about his memoir, Defining a Galaxy, below are links to purchase both the physical and digital copies in the description. It is truly worth your read.

Today, I’m talking to Rachel Rose, R&D Supervisor at Industrial Light and Magic. Rachel has worked on some of the incredible projects at ILM, including the virtual cameras used on ROGUE ONE, as well as Stage Craft / The Volume

Rachel is such an inspiring and vital part of what we love about STAR WARS and beyond, and it was an honor to get to talk with her.

Thank you so much again to Rachel for coming on the show, and being such an incredible inspiration and resource. Thank you, as well, to Ian at ILM for helping to coordinate this interview.

Of course, if for some reason you are listening to this show and have not watch LIGHT AND MAGIC on Disney+, it comes with my absolute highest recommendation. Just astounding.

The incredibly talented artist responsible for the designs of Jar Jar Binks, Sebulba and so many more in The Phantom Menace is the legendary Terryl Whitlatch. Just flip through a dog-eared copy of Art Of TPM and see for yourself.

Ms. Whitlatch’s contributions to the saga cannot be overstated: whether it was the Dewbacks and new Jabba denizens of the Special Editions, the Podracer pilots or the creatures of Naboo’s planet core, I am just thrilled and honored to be able to share her story with you all and I hope you enjoy it as much as you’ll be quickly able to tell that I did.

I don’t think I’ve gushed in an interview like this before, but please correct me if I’m wrong. I just want to thank Ms. Whitlatch again for the incredible, incredible interview.

In the upcoming episodes, we’ll have Disney Imagineering’s Scott Trowbridge, as well as Masi Oka, who you may know as Hiro from HEROES, but who also worked at ILM during the Prequels. Michael McCormick was one of the original puppeteers and sculptors of Salacious Crumb, Sy Snootles and Ephant Mon, who then left Return of the Jedi’s Creature Shop early into production, because of injuries.

This is a short, live, interesting interview, and I believe it’s his first Star Wars-related one ever. We touch on many subjects, some fun and some not-so-fun, but I hope you get a better understanding of Mr. McCormick from this, as well as of his life and his incredible talent.

19 Aug 2020Silas Carson: The Man Behind Nute Gunray, Ki-Adi-Mundi and Droid Attacks on Wookiees00:46:56

Silas Carson played 4 different characters across all of the Star Wars prequels, especially known for his iconic portrayals of Jedi Master Ki-Adi-Mundi and Trade Federation leader Nute Gunray.

Yup, same guy.

(Listen closely to when he starts doing voices of these characters and figure out if you can hear me have a minor freak out.)

Mr. Carson's time, stories and incredible charm was such a thrill. I am so proud of this fantastic interview and, as I said over and over again, it was a huge honor.

And, quick announcement: since August would have been a time for us to all meet at Star Wars Celebration, and I would have had swag to give out to you all, I’m instead giving away a ton of rare, signed stuff online, instead. 04 May 2021Jim Cummings: The Voice of Hondo Ohnaka, Everyone's Favorite Pirate00:07:47

Welcome to a very special, very short May the Fourth bonus episode of Talking Bay 94: my conversation with prolific voice actor, Jim Cummings.

Mr. Cummings is the voice of characters like Winnie the Pooh, Darkwing Duck, the Tasmanian Devil, and of course ... HONDO OHNAKA.

Thank you, as always, to Zach McGinnis at Galactic Productions for setting this up: http://www.galacticproductionsevents.com/

We’ll be back tomorrow with another episode, this time with Regal Robot’s Tom Spina, which is such a blast. Until then, have a great Star Wars Day, thank you for your support, friendship and patience, and May the Force Be with You!

18 Nov 2020Todd Vaziri: Putting the "Magic" in Industrial Light & Magic01:28:07

Industrial Light & Magic digital artist and compositing supervisor Todd Vaziri has worked on every Star Wars movie since 2002, beginning with Attack of the Clones.

Whether for the prequels (including the final duel on Mustafar), the sequels (figuring out the feel of a modern Star Wars movie), the spin-offs (helping to bring Tarkin and the Kessel Run to life), theme park rides (including Star Tours and Rise of the Resistance), or Stephen Colbert’s Green Screen Challenge, Mr. Vaziri’s passion for movie-making is evident in his every shot, and in his every answer on this episode.

I’ve wanted him to be a guest on Talking Bay 94 for such a long time, and man, it was so worth the wait.

Make sure you are following him on Twitter: @TVaziri … he is truly one of the best people to follow, period, on that app.

This Friday, at 7:30 PM Central, we will be live again on Scener.com, breaking down Episode 4 of The Mandalorian Season 2. This will be every Friday night this season, with me and special guests pausing rewinding and analyzing every shot and, thanks to Scener’s technology, you’ll be able to watch seamlessly alongside us!

Head to scener.com/talkingbay94 to set a reminder for this Friday and I’ll see you there!

25 May 2022Kevin and Tracey Thompson: Their Journey to Endor and Beyond00:24:25

Today I’m talking to Kevin Thompson, who portrayed Ewoks in Return of the Jedi and the Ewok movies, as well as his wife Tracey Thompson, who wrote the new book “My Journey to Endor”, chronicling Kevin’s career and stories.

They were such a blast to talk to, as we delved into the incredible work on the set of Jedi, as well as Blade Runner and so much more.

They will be at Star Wars Celebration this week, signing autographs and books. Please go see them at their table, or purchase “My Journey to Endor” here: https://amzn.to/3MO2cHd

And yes, for anyone still not aware: THIS FRIDAY we will be having a live panel at Star Wars Celebration on the podcast stage with special guest MATT MARTIN from the Lucasfilm Story Group, at 11AM on Friday 5/27! We’ll see you there and will have the live recording up as a podcast soon!

Hope to see you all in Anaheim! I have special swag (aka highlighters based off of the Episode 1 documentary) and would love to see all listeners of the show.

19 Mar 2025Fon Davis: Prequel Trilogy Model Maker and BattleBots Judge00:56:06

Today is an interview with the incredibly talented model maker and visual effects artist, Fon Davis.

My wife and I took Fon and his girlfriend out for some Texas BBQ (LeRoy and Lewis, please sponsor the show) while they were in Austin for South by Southwest ... and then we sat around with a beer or two and chatted all about Fon’s time working on the Special Editions and the prequel trilogy while at Industrial Light & Magic.

I hope you enjoy this conversation … it’s really a blast, and Fon is such a wealth of knowledge and stories. I really appreciate Fon accepting the invite and hanging out with me on a Monday night. It was such a joy for me.

For more information about Fonco Studios, head to their site, and follow Fon on his social media!

In other news, Talking Bay 94 is headed to Japan! I will be hosting a live recording of this podcast on Saturday, April 19 at 10AM, with a special guest and special surprises. I hope to see you there!

And in other other news … I co-wrote an official Star Wars book. I cannot believe it. Star Wars Encyclopedia from DK Books is out and can be ordered now. My next book, The Star Wars Encyclopedia of Starfighters and Other Vehicles can be pre-ordered now, coming out this fall!

16 Sep 2020Bruce Nicholson: Two-Time Academy Award Winner for Star Wars and Indiana Jones00:21:02

With his groundbreaking work on The Empire Strikes Back and Raiders of the Lost Ark as optical photography supervisor, Bruce Nicholson is an Industrial Light and Magic Legend.

If you don’t know what optical photography and compositing is, this episode is a crash course in all of that, including what is was like working alongside the Dykstraflex, mistakes in the end scene of Raiders and … the time he was the first person to suit up in the finished Boba Fett costume.

Next week: Ewok Movie Month Madness, with our friends at Blast Points.
