05 Oct 2022EP 94: Mauled with Jeremy Evans01:00:37

Very rare on a podcast do the hosts sit back and just listen. This is one such instance where the story was so fascinating, that's all they could do.

There are tears, there are laughs, and there are shivers down your spine as Steve and Greg take the reins on this episode, simply titled Mauled.

"I picked up my goatee, and put my jaw back in", how 'Baby Shark' kept him going, to his final goodbye letter - be ready to listen for a straight 60 minutes, because once you start, you won't want to stop.

This conversation starts in August 2017.

Jeremy Evans endured multiple ferocious attacks by a protective female grizzly bear while hunting in the Alberta wilderness.

Jeremy’s injuries were massive, his scalp and face destroyed, an eye and his jaw dangling down. The tendons on one leg had been fully severed during the mauling. His hands were damaged where he had physically fought the bear. It was more than a dozen kilometres to where he had parked his truck in darkness early that morning and absolutely no one was near. Thoughts of his wife and their eight-month-old daughter consumed Jeremy as he stumbled and crawled for hours back to his truck, before driving himself several kilometres to a backcountry lodge for help.

All the while, Jeremy thought of his young family and the upcoming sixth wedding anniversary that he feared he might never be able to celebrate.

Find his book 'Mauled- Lessons Learned From A Grizzly Bear Attack" here.

13 Dec 2023Wild Encounter: Peter Gutsche's Close Call with a Grizzly01:40:57

Kyle and Greg sit down with WSSBC Membership Chair and Director, Peter Gutsche. Affectionally know as "Gooch" Peter has been a heavy lifter on our team and spends his falls guiding for Arctic Red River Outfitters and Arcadia Outfitting.

Pete gets after it in the outdoors and spends weeks on end at his cabin in remote country living the good life. He is raising his family with that connection to the outdoors and you often see him with the whole family stalking BC's game.

This past fall Pete had a close call with a Grizzly Bear staking claim on one of Peter's clients harvests. Fast thinking and that survival mentality resulted in all humans walking away with nothing but shaken nerves and a story of a lifetime. Peter was literally within feet of ending up on the receiving end of a Grizzly collision which would have ended poorly for all parties. Quick thinking and a calm cool disposition likely saved Peter and his clients lives.

We dive deep into guiding in the Territories, hunting, whisky, a passion for conservation and of course our upcoming Mountain Hunting Expo and Salute to Conservation.

Come visit with Peter and the WSSBC team at our Salute to Conservation and Mountain Hunting Expo. To register this event visit: www.wildsheepsociety.com/salute2conservation

20 Dec 2023Stop the Spread - Chronic Wasting Disease with Cait Nelson01:08:48

We welcome Cait Nelson, Wildlife Health Biologist for Fish and Wildlife Branch, BC Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship to the podcast. Cait's area of expertise is Chronic Wasting Disease and she needs our help.

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a fatal infection that affects species in the deer family (cervids) such as mule deer, white-tailed deer, elk, moose and caribou.

Although CWD has not yet been detected in B.C., it has continued to spread in almost all affected jurisdictions despite mitigation and management efforts. In order to prevent CWD in B.C.’s cervid populations it requires a collaborative, coordinated and rapid response.

There are some relatively simple things that you can do to help Cait and help keep BC CWD disease free. For more details visit:

21 Feb 2024Metal Monkey and Metal Sheep with Jen Phillips00:29:22

Jen sits down with Peter at Sheep Week in Reno. Jen made her second appearance as a donor during the Sheep Show and 2024 hit it out of the park fetching $40,000 USD. She is know for her metal work and particular as a welder. Her “Going home heavy” art depicts a step back in time of a view known and loved by all sheep hunters. An original wooden pack adorned with a ram skull artistically welded out of pure metal. The life-sized sculpture poetically captures the weight one carries when “going home heavy” feels like you are carrying a pack full of iron.

This solid piece is one of a kind never to be duplicated and can be displayed free standing or hanging on the wall in one’s trophy room or office. The originality of the work and design is sure to capture the attention of hunters and art collectors alike as it is Jennifer’s first instalment of the metal sheep slam - this time featuring a bighorn ram.

Check out Jen's work at @officialjenphillips.

15 Mar 2024ACT NOW - Proposed Hunting Regulation Changes in British Columbia00:22:13

Recently the Province of British Columbia released their proposed 2024-2026 Hunting and Trapping Regulations on the Angling, Hunting and Trapping Engagement (AHTE) website. This is an opportunity for you to comment on the proposed changes and we encourage you to do so.

The Society has provided a brief explainer on a few of these proposals for your consideration. They can be viewed at: www.wildsheepsociety.com/proposed-changes-to-2024-2026-hunting-and-trapping-regulations/

The Society has reviewed these changes and has concerns around several of the proposals. Overall, there are several recommendations that are intended to reduce hunter density on the landscape with no evidence it will benefit wildlife. This was noted and referenced on several proposals, and it lacks the scientific data to support this. In fact, in some of the rationale the government states that they lack adequate data and are moving to a Limited Entry Hunt as a management strategy. The Society feels that there is too little rationale for many of these decisions and a lack of ingenuity to find solutions that may preclude Limited Entry Hunting and have greater benefit for the issues identified.

We encourage you to review the proposals and complete the engagement on the following site: www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/sports-culture/recreation/fishing-hunting/ahte/hunting-trapping. Your feedback will be a factor in the decision-making process on the outcome of these proposals. The deadline for comment is March 22, 2024, so be sure to comment in a timely manner. We cannot emphasize enough the importance of submitting your comments.

12 Jun 2024The Weatherby Legacy with Adam Weatherby01:03:21

We sit down with Weatherby President and CEO Adam Weatherby to talk rifles, sheep hunting, family, legacy and more. Adam is the third generation Weatherby to lead the company, one that started out by his grandfather Roy, as an ammunition manufacturer. Adam, has elevated the company to new heights, relocating from their Southern California origins to Sheridan, Wyoming. They have moved into a state of the art facility and grown to well over 100 employees all in the midst of a global pandemic.

Adam talks about legacy, innovation, family and his work in the Ministry as a youth pastor. We dive into Adam's favorite rifle and caliber, his role as the CEO, the involvement of his wife Brenda plays as Vice-President and the role his kids have played. Adam reflects on his childhood and touches on the succession from the first generation to the second and then how he came to run the company.

We take the opportunity to talk about Adam's favorite hunts and of course dive in to his trip to the Yukon to harvest a magnificent ram. He ended up with a bonus connecting on a big wolf and then in the closing hours of the trip, Brenda was able to harvest the largest Caribou taken in the Yukon for that year.

This is a great visit with a conservation minded individual that values family and community. We touch on the generosity of the Weatherby brand and why supporting conservation is an organizational ethos.

23 Oct 2024The problem with wolves with John Legnard01:06:15

We welcome Coloradan John Legnard to the podcast to discuss wolves and their repatriation in Colorado. John is a dedicated conservationist and a concerned citizen of Colarado.

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife Commission approved the final Colorado Wolf Restoration and Management Plan in May 2023, clearing the way for CPW biologists to reintroduce gray wolves west of the Continental Divide and meet the voter-approved deadline of reintroduction by December 31, 2023.

John shares with us how many rural ranchers feel about the plan and some of their concerns. It is clear that acquiring wolf source stock has been challenging for the State and John and many others are asking for a pause while the State gets their cards in order. They have asked BC to pause from the approval and allow for another year of getting systems in place to allow for broader success of the reintroduction.
