03 Oct 2022 | Valuing Human Capital with Derek Guide at Fragomen | 00:12:46
On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Derek Guide, Talent Acquisition Director at Fragomen, to explore some ways in which talent acquisition leaders can embrace the human element of the recruiting industry. As Derek highlights in this conversation, it’s important for recruiters to remember several important tenets of talent acquisitions: - Face-to-face interaction will often provide greater returns than digital communication. - Automate as many tasks as you can to free up your team to do the work that only a human can do. - A candidate experience is more than a data point. Understanding the desires and motivations of candidates will lead to more successful recruiting. - Talent acquisition is a very human industry. Embrace that part of the work and lean into its relational quality. - Mentorship is an unspoken, but fundamental, part of any HR manager’s job. - Following up with former team members is a great way to develop broader industry knowledge and learn better hiring practices. In an increasingly digital age and an ever-more automated workflow, Derek’s emphasis on human interaction is an important reminder of the unique value proposition talent leaders bring to their organizations. - Fragomen - https://www.fragomen.com/trending/worldwide-immigration-trends-reports/index.html - Sagemark HR - LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/sagemark-hr/about/ This episode is brought to you by SageMark HR.Sagemark HR can help you: ✔ Improve your talent practices and make better, more informed people decisions. 15 Nov 2022 | Creating Efficient Processes with Jane Curran of JLL | 00:17:53
On today’s episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Jane Curran, Global Head of Talent Acquisition at JLL, to discuss how Jane is shifting her organization’s focus to more streamlined operational processes. For recruiters and talent leaders looking to grow their staff and their tech stack, Jane has some advice about the processes behind that growth: - Efficient processes are the bedrock of any talent acquisition department. All other tools depend on strong processes underneath them. - Technology is not an end in itself. It’s simply a tool to strengthen systems that are already in place. - Adopt tech that your organization can use to solve specific problems, not just the tech with the most features or capabilities. - Pursue progress over perfection. - In a global organization, cater your systems to meet the needs of different departments and talent pools based on their geographic location. Maintain curiosity and a drive for personal growth and development. As Jane tells it, a company with well-organized systems can seamlessly slot in new tools, personnel and technologies to drive continued growth. On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull welcomes Jon Finch, SVP of Talent at Milwaukee Tool, a tool manufacturing company that has invested heavily in technology and innovation across its power tool and hand tool businesses. Jon boasts a lengthy career at the company, starting more than 20 years ago as a sales rep calling on hardware stores and lumberyards in four states. After taking on several different sales roles, he worked his way into recruiting sales and marketing hires. He took on his talent acquisition position in the fall of 2020. Having such a diverse career path has helped Jon approach TA with a well-rounded business perspective. When he took over, he instinctively knew he needed to look at the available technology to maximize efficiency in hiring and to track important business metrics. Having the right tech stack in place allows him to manage growth in a realistic way, based on those business metrics. 02 Aug 2023 | Values-Based Recruiting with Beth Michele Greenberg at Integral Ad Science | 00:18:44
On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Beth Greenberg, Vice President of Global Talent Acquisition at Integral Ad Science, to hear how she transformed her organization’s recruiting process to align with company values. To adopt this values-based recruiting approach, Beth offers these guiding principles: - Values-based recruiting starts with understanding what your organizational values actually are. You can’t lean into a cultural vision if you don’t have one in the first place. - Pre-briefs and debriefs ensure the whole team is aligned on what the must-haves are when interviewing a candidate. - Even recruiters who don’t conduct interviews should be trained in the interview process to fully immerse them in the values they should look for in candidates. - Spend time with the team you’re recruiting for, like sales or finance, to better understand their needs, operations and standard procedures. This hiring approach brings in candidates who are not only competent in their skills, but fit the organizational culture and who can drive company growth. 24 Oct 2022 | Expanding the Labor Pool with Peter Brooks, formerly at Northrop Grumman | 00:14:42
In today’s conversation, host Ryan Dull is joined by Peter Brooks, formerly at Northrop Grumman, but who has become Vice President, Global Talent Acquisition at Protiviti since the date of this recording. The workforce is undergoing seismic shifts in its makeup and workplace expectations. With a lesser emphasis on formal education and a greater focus on remote work and work/life balance, recruiters are being forced to change their approach so as to reach the right talent. Peter offers a path forward in this new hiring landscape. Some of his proposed solutions include: - Prioritizing skills over education in the talent search. - Taking advantage of new technologies, including AI, to streamline the search for talent. - Focusing on developing the careers of internal team members rather than filling open positions with new hires. - Encouraging recruiters to take a more active role in organizational operations. Approaching talent acquisitions from this new angle can widen the talent pool. This allows recruiters to reach the right candidates while also bringing them a value-added proposition that encourages longevity. Peter describes how this holistic method brings together the needs of businesses and candidates in mutually beneficial relationships. 02 Jun 2021 | Accountable Recruiting with Robin Linn, Senior Director, Creative Talent Acquisition of Activision | Blizzard | King | 00:29:16
On this episode of Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, your host Ryan Dull of SageMark HR interviews Robin Linn, Senior Director, Creative Talent Acquisition of Activision | Blizzard | King. Robin dives into his career in the recruitment industry, especially his current role recruiting in the animation and gaming industry. Having grown up in the shadow of Disneyland in Anaheim, CA, animation has always been a part of Robin’s life, despite his early career as a banker. A lucky break as a sculptor put him on the path to where he is today, as a leader in animation and gaming recruiting. Robin talks about the changing landscape in recruiting with all the technological advancements in the world today—not just in the way animators and game developers work, but in the way the connected world and social media have opened the world up to recruiters like him who used to be limited to the pool of artists found in the Los Angeles area. Robin believes technology also pulls back the curtain on certain recruitment practices, forcing the industry to operate in a more transparent, accountable, and human fashion. These are all changes in the industry that he finds refreshing. 08 Jun 2022 | Leveraging Every Asset with Kerry Karle at DISH Network | 00:18:56
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull talks to Kerry Karle, VP, Head of Talent Acquisition at DISH Network, about her holistic view of her organization’s TA assets. The two most obvious tools at any recruiter’s disposal are their team members and technology. Kerry of course makes efficient use of her team and tech, but she does so by leveraging assets that may not be as obvious. One such tool that may often go overlooked is team structure. A team can only work to its maximum ability if it's organized in a way that promotes efficiency. A poorly -structured team generates poor work output and Kerry’s staff is only as efficient as the framework she builds for them. Work culture is a complementary asset that has to be wielded well. Talented team members working in a well-structured way will still underperform if they aren’t in lockstep with the company culture. Seeing how all of these assets work together is a talent in itself and Kerry has cultivated that talent well. To Kerry, no asset is an island and understanding the way each tool interacts with its counterparts is foundational to being an effective talent acquisitions leader.

13 Sep 2022 | Creating Employee Value Propositions with Sheila Stygar, Talent Executive, Transformation Leader, and Culture Champion | 00:15:59
In today’s conversation, host Ryan Dull is joined by Sheila Stygar, Talent Executive, Transformational Leader, and Culture Champion, to discuss the ways that organizations can offer something of value to the talent they recruit. Talent recruiters are in a unique position compared to other roles within a business, because the resource they manage is people. That human element can sometimes be difficult to account for, and each individual brings their own unique needs to the table when they’re considering joining an organization. Recruiters then have to walk a fine line between finding people that add value to the company and making room for the company to cater to the talent’s needs. For Sheila, finding the perfect balance in that complicated dance is one of her greatest passions. She relishes the opportunity to train and develop future leaders by understanding their needs and creating a value proposition that encourages them to fully commit to their work. To her, it’s not just about landing the right talent, but continuing to grow that talent and consistently offering them incentives to work on their own development. When done well, it creates a symbiotic relationship that promotes mutual success. - Sheila Stygar - https://www.linkedin.com/in/sstygar/ - Ryan Dull - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-dull-743a8b4/ - Sagemark HR - LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/sagemark-hr/about/ This episode is brought to you by SageMark HR.Sagemark HR can help you: ✔ Improve your talent practices and make better, more informed people decisions. 24 Jan 2023 | Eliminating Waste in the Recruiting Workflow with Tara Torres at Kasa | 00:18:11
On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Tara Torres, Director of Talent Acquisition at Kasa, for an interesting conversation about process standardization. When it comes to making recruiting workflows as efficient as possible, Tara has some words of advice: - The primary objective of a defined workflow structure should be to eliminate wasteful cost, time and energy. - Standardizing processes and procedures is the first step in creating a more efficient workflow. - Sometimes, technology and digital tools can actually create waste, not eliminate it. - Before beginning work on a project, take time to describe the problem that needs solving. - Explore tools and solutions within your organization, including those being used outside of the recruiting function to make sure you have fully optimized and adopted the existing tech stack. - Automation only improves efficiency if the tasks that require automation are carefully planned for and the tools for automation are properly chosen and implemented. - Test proposed solutions to a problem before committing to their full implementation. With a proper plan put into a standardized procedure, TA leaders can cut down on workflow waste and make the most out of their limited resources and time. On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Christy Harper, Director of Talent Acquisition at Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. To help organizations build a better candidate experience, Christy has some core ideas that she tries to encourage businesses to adopt: - Each department should have a clearly defined role in the hiring and onboarding process. - HR leaders should focus on bringing value to the whole organization, not just their own department or position. - A more centralized and structured hiring process provides a more meaningful candidate experience. - A better experience for recruiters often translates into a better experience for candidates. - Involving current employees in the talent acquisition process leads to a more committed workforce and better team cohesion. - Harmonize HR metrics with broader organizational metrics to ensure business functions are aligned. - Take efforts to facilitate clear communication between HR and the departments they hire for. With these principles undergirding her efforts, Christy is creating a more inviting candidate experience and bringing out the best in a vast talent pool. - Konica Minolta Business Solutions U.S.A., Inc. - https://kmbs.konicaminolta.us/?utm_source=linkedin&utm_medium=organic%20social&utm_campaign=social%20media - Ryan Dull - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-dull-743a8b4/ - Sagemark HR - LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/sagemark-hr/about/ This episode is brought to you by Sagemark HRSagemark HR can help you: ✔ Improve your talent practices and make better, more informed people decisions. 04 Jan 2022 | Getting Students Excited About Insurance with Maura Quinn of Liberty Mutual | 00:13:07
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull welcomes Maura Quinn, assistant vice president, university, DEI & emerging talent acquisition at Liberty Mutual Insurance. Maura’s story is an interesting one. She started at Liberty directly out of college, and she was the first college graduate hired straight out of school in the human resources department. There wasn’t a recruiting role at the company at that time. She was introduced to a group of interns early on, through a program Liberty sponsored, and took to it immediately. She convinced her boss at that time that recruiting students should be her job, even though that job didn’t exist. Nearly 20 years later she is still at it. She has built up an impressive program over the years. The company has grown from 33 interns in that initial program to over 1,800 entry-level interns in college hires on an annual basis. She’s excited about their diversity, equity and inclusion programs. They currently recruit at all 102 Historically Black Colleges and Universities, unlike most companies that concentrate only on the top five. She’s done some great work and it’s a fun conversation. 08 Mar 2021 | Optimizing Candidate Experience with Michael Gruber, SVP Talent Acquisition at Compass Group | 00:23:50
In this episode, Michael Gruber, SVP of Talent Acquisition at Compass Group, sits down with us to share a bit about his career and how he and his team have developed systems and processes that allow them to efficiently hire over 100,000 people every year. Michael got his start in HR during his time in the military, so it was a natural fit for him once he transitioned back into civilian life. After an interesting two decades, including joining a company in its first year and growing it to nearly 800 employees, he landed at Compass Group about three and a half years ago. Compass Group hires at high volumes — at any one time, the company has about 15,000 hourly jobs and nearly 1,000 professional jobs open. Michael shares how he and his team have implemented a technology stack to help them manage talent acquisition efficiently and give candidates a better experience. But, despite the necessary attention to technology, Michael reinforces the importance of relationships in recruiting. He closes with his thoughts on how TA teams should be building relationships to make their roles more effective. Wondering how to make technology work better for your TA team? Visit SagemarkHR.com. 21 Mar 2023 | Supporting Diversity and Belonging with Kumari Williams at Workday | 00:18:15
On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Kumari Williams, Global Head of Programs and Operation, Belonging and Diversity/Atlanta Site Leadership at Workday. Kumari has a wealth of knowledge and experience in not only HR and talent acquisitions but also in creating diverse and inclusive workspaces. She offers wisdom to TA leaders pursuing more equitable representation in their organizations: - Data is an important tool in understanding how to best implement DEI initiatives. - DEI shouldn’t just be an organizational program, it should be baked into the company strategy and vision. - Equity means more than just equal representation in the workplace, but also equal responsibility, compensation and access to opportunities within an organization. - In a global organization, DEI initiatives should be tailored to fit within different cultural contexts. - Creating a sense of belonging requires a leadership alignment around the shared value of inclusion. When talent leaders and C-suite leadership share DEI values, belonging is a natural outflow of organizational culture. 16 Aug 2022 | Implementing Technology Effectively with Britton Bloch of Navy Federal Credit Union | 00:25:06
Today’s conversation between host Ryan Dull and Britton Bloch, Vice President of Talent Acquisition Strategy and Head of Recruiting at Navy Federal Credit Union, centers around the balance between technology and people-driven systems. Technology, and especially newly developed AI systems, have the potential to streamline recruiting processes and make talent acquisition far more efficient and effective. However, as Britton explains, these tools are only useful if they’re implemented into systems that are already functional. Her work at Navy Federal Credit Union has been a journey of using technology as a supplement, not a crutch. For Britton, technology doesn’t tend to create new structures but instead often exacerbates the functions of the structures that are already in place. A well-oiled machine will become even more effective with the right technology, but chaotic and unrefined processes will only create more chaos when paired with technology. Because of this, Britton is wary of trying to adopt new tech too quickly. She prefers to spend the bulk of her time refining and improving her organization’s processes and then using technology to supplement a system that’s already working well. As Britton tells it, technology is an enabler of systems, not a creator.

08 Mar 2022 | Culture as a Recruitment Tool with Mike Miller of Chipotle | 00:34:40
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull speaks with Mike Miller, Director of Talent Acquisition at Chipotle Mexican Grill. They talk about Mike’s storied career and the future of talent recruiting. Mike stumbled into HR while studying English at UCLA, recruiting for an SAT tutoring company to earn money while at school. From there, Mike’s gregarious personality and passion for people saw him become a successful talent recruiter for Hot Topic, Red Bull, and eventually Chipotle. Over the course of his impressive career, Mike has often advocated for a new way of thinking in his industry. Gone are the days where recruiters sifted through piles of resumés of eager candidates. In the wake of Covid-19, it is as much about selling the company to the candidate as it is about selling the candidate to the company. Mike has always sought to build systems that support the staff he hires, and he continuously tries to find ways to encourage their professional development. This, to him, is the future of talent recruitment. To hire great people, an organization has to become a business worth working for.

03 Apr 2023 | Developing Current and Future Talent with Nick Mailey at Equinix | 00:26:49
Nick Mailey, Vice President of Talent Acquisition at Equinix, has a long history of tech industry recruiting, but he began that path after a short political career pursuing social justice. That early political experience gave him a values-driven approach to recruiting that he lives by to this day. Chief among Nick’s talent acquisition values is a willingness to invest in his people. He encourages his fellow leaders to lean into this concept, his advice is to: - Provide opportunities for development after a candidate joins your organization. - Encourage organizational leaders to be part of an ongoing development structure both for themselves and their teams. - Seek out candidates that are in career transitions and provide the skills training they need to effectively change roles. - Veterans, refugees and immigrants are often avid job-seekers who can be effective team members given the right onboarding and training. Current hires lay the groundwork for future organizational leaders. Investing in those hires ensures that your company builds a pathway toward continued growth and success. 10 Jan 2023 | The Future of Recruiting Technology with Matt Rimer at Trinity Health and Host of “TA In The Trenches” | 00:38:10
On today’s episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Matt Rimer, Director of Talent Acquisition at Trinity Health (HQ Michigan) and Host of “TA In The Trenches”, join them for a real dialogue on some of the latest insights, trends, and challenges inside healthcare talent acquisition today. - TA can be hesitant to adopt emerging technologies due to a lack of connectivity to the specific use cases TA leaders are working to solve. - Though technology provides many benefits, nothing can replace the value of genuine human interaction. - With machine learning and artificial intelligence, recruiters can focus on tasks better suited for human interaction. - Recruiter, Hiring Manager, and Candidate experience must remain a priority and technology should improve it, not detract from it. With technology, the focus should always be on how it can give us leverage to improve our results. That usually starts with making things more efficient, but what everyone should be striving to deploy are those "big levers" that will have a lasting impact and truly change the game.

On this episode, host Ryan Dull welcomes Danielle McCaffrey, Senior Director of Talent Acquisition at Alorica. She details her personal connection to the talent acquisition industry and her perspective on the future trajectory of recruiting. Ryan and Danielle discuss the following in their conversation: - Passion for the human element of recruiting is essential for industry success. - Leaders who rely on technology as a primary asset instead of as a supplemental aid will be limited in their ability to attract the best candidates. - Industry leaders should seek out roles that broaden their skill set to gain a holistic perspective of the work involved in talent acquisitions. - Intimate knowledge of organizational operations produces the most effective recruiting strategy. - Recruiting is just one piece of a broader operational picture, and systems designs should factor in the whole. - AI is an effective productivity tool but should never replace face-to-face candidate recruiting campaigns. Danielle’s work as a talent acquisition leader taps into her passion for her family’s business, and her enthusiasm for her own development provides unique insights into how industry leaders can continue to evolve and grow. 09 Nov 2022 | Improving Candidate Conversion Rates with Colin Lyle at AdventHealth | 00:26:20
On today’s episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Colin Lyle, System Director of Talent Acquisition at AdventHealth, for a conversation around Colin’s efforts to improve candidate conversion at his organization. As part of his initiatives to streamline the talent acquisition processes, Colin emphasizes several important points for consideration: - The talent market is growing increasingly competitive, and moving candidates through the hiring process quickly is now an industry necessity. - The current market demands risk, and risk-averse talent leaders must get creative in their recruitment efforts. - Leveraging an internal talent pool is as important as external recruiting efforts. - Transitioning existing staff to new roles can provide more capable team members than direct external hiring. - Talent leaders must always be willing to reevaluate their standard operating procedures, scrapping them entirely and starting over if necessary. - An organizational story is best told with supporting data and analytics. Some of these measures may seem extreme but the new hiring landscape brought about by Covid has created an extreme environment. Some drastic measures may be necessary to remain competitive in this radically transformed recruitment world.

24 Mar 2021 | The Future of Recruiting and the Role of Tech, with VP of Talent Acquisition, Shelia Gray | 00:22:03
In this episode of the TA Leaders podcast, we sat down with Shelia Gray. Shelia is a long-time HR veteran who currently serves as the vice president of talent acquisition at Quadient, an IT and services business based out of Bagneux, France. Previously, she’s been a global TA leader at GE Appliances, Citrix, and AMD. Shelia talks about her journey in the human resources field, the things she loves about talent acquisition — both the fun and the challenging — and how she rose up through the ranks from HR generalist. She describes the point in her career when she knew she wanted to focus on the operations and technology behind recruiting. This was when she was working at a place called AlliedSignal (later acquired by Honeywell) as they went through their digital transformation. Fresh off her 2021 team goal-setting, Shelia shares what she’ll be most focused on this year, and some of the types of tools she’ll be investing in, which provides valuable insight into where she sees TA going in the foreseeable future. She also talks candidly about the changes Covid-19 brought around that will likely stick, and mentions that remote work — or at least a more rapid march toward it — is one of them. In this episode of the TA Leaders podcast, we have a great discussion with Lisa Starin, Director of Talent Acquisition and Talent Management at Baylor Scott & White Health. Lisa is currently serving in a dual role. She leads the talent acquisition team of 22 members. She also serves as the interim talent management director in charge of a new performance management framework and platform for 50,000+ employees. Interestingly, Lisa started her career in a hybrid role as office support and an associate recruiter. But she took the opportunity to become a full-fledged recruiter as soon as it became available. She shares the “old school” recruiting method she mainly used at the beginning of her career, and why she wouldn’t change anything about her early days. Lisa spent about 17 years at UnitedHealth Group as a recruiter, recruiting manager, and a few other roles. She’s spent most of her career in what she calls “the business of people” and “being able to match careers with unique talent.” In her current role, Lisa and her team hire approximately 12,000 – 13,000 people per year. She shares how they’ve had interesting challenges in the healthcare industry in the middle of the pandemic. Lisa also talks about some of the biggest challenges and initiatives they’re working on moving forward, including some significant changes in workflows for specific roles and what they’re doing to help with internal mobility. Finally, Lisa shares what she sees for the future of talent acquisition. She mentions what she’s focused on improving to help with internal mobility at Baylor Scott & White Health, as well as some great insights into how all professionals should be approaching talent acquisition. 11 Jan 2022 | Ryan Dull’s Interview on the Recruiting Future Podcast with Matt Alder | 00:28:34
This episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast offers a bit of a twist; Ryan Dull is the guest. This is a repost of the Recruiting Future podcast with Matt Alder, and Matt and Ryan discuss Ryan’s career path, the challenges TA professionals face today, and what the future holds. Ryan spent the first 18 years of his career in corporate recruiting, both in the trenches and in management positions. Along the way, he became enamored with technology and how it could make the life of TA professionals easier. The problem in the early and mid-2000s was that the tech ecosystem was fragmented and confusing. Ryan decided to develop a system so that he and his team could identify their exact problems and fill those needs with the most useful tech. He struck out on his own eight years ago, forming Sagemark HR. He has helped more than 200 organizations with their tech needs since then. Ryan and Matt talk about the unprecedented market today and how important it is for organizations of all sizes to have their tech stack in order. Ryan believes that every situation is unique and should be treated as such when choosing technology solutions. 14 Mar 2023 | Maintaining Human Connections with Annie Carolla at Gensler | 00:18:47
On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Annie Carolla, Global Director of Talent Acquisition at Gensler, for a conversation about the impact of relationships on talent acquisition functions. Human connections are the backbone of successful recruiting, which is why Annie approaches her role as a TA leader according to the following principles: - Intentional talent branding efforts are foundational to telling your organizational story to potential candidates. - Internal connections with colleagues and departments outside of HR are as important as external connections with candidates and talent pools. - Recruiting and retention are two sides of the same coin, and TA leaders should still focus on a candidate’s experience after they’re hired. - Open communication between a team and its leaders is foundational to successful recruiting. - The recruiting experience should be tailored to each individual candidate. Having a people-centered view of TA functions creates an approach to recruiting that improves both conversion and retention. 15 Jun 2021 | When Employees Are Also Customers with Eran Arbel of Florida International University | 00:21:57
In this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull connects with Eran Arbel, Assistant Director of Leadership & Talent Acquisition Management at Florida International University, to talk about his long career in recruiting and organizational development. After getting his start with large public sector organizations, Eran finds himself back at his alma mater, FIU, and he tells Ryan about some of the unique and interesting challenges he faces as a university recruiter, for example, how he often has to develop employees who are also students/customers of the organization. Eran has found that developing supervisors and giving them tools to develop their students/employees is key to having successful relationships and a thriving organization. In recruiting new talent, he believes that making human connections is critical to attracting and keeping the best talent for the role and the university as a whole. He also offers some interesting insights that come with being an internal recruiter, including being able to develop people more effectively because he is connected to the entire organization, not just the person he is trying to help. 28 Mar 2023 | Implementing Successful Strategies with Jonathan Robbins at Evoke | 00:21:53
On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Jonathan Robbins, Managing Director of Talent Acquisition at Evoke, for a conversation about integrating policy ideation and implementation. Jonathan recommends the following principles for successfully turning ideas into action: - A skills-and-capabilities-based TA sourcing strategy creates more opportunity to focus on key business drivers, build wider candidate pools, bring in more diverse profiles and collectively scale our teams. - Don’t lose sight of ROI. Creativity and innovation are only helpful if they produce a meaningful return. - Even good ideas can fail if there’s insufficient organization and structure to drive their implementation. Talent Acquisition thrives as a partnership model, not a service model. - TA leaders should learn the ins and outs of their whole organization to understand their capacity for certain TA practices and strategies and to understand the skills and capabilities that drive growth. - Don’t be afraid to try new things and challenge operational assumptions, but don’t get too attached to innovations if they don’t seem to be working. Work with agility and support when working with data. The best talent leaders know how to turn good ideas into revenue-generating operations. 14 Sep 2021 | Be Humble and Willing to Learn with Blair Dugan of BeiGene | 00:15:51
Blair Dugan, Sr. Director, Human Resources, at BeiGene joins the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast on this episode, and she shares with host Ryan Dull her background as a TA leader in the biotech, life sciences, and pharmaceutical industries, and her role now at a rapidly growing global organization. Blair got her start at a staffing agency, which she recommends for anyone starting a career in recruiting and talent acquisition. That led to agency work, which led to in-house positions in science industry companies, where she discovered that this kind of work was her passion. She says her current company, BeiGene, is unique in that the company’s mission and focus are on helping people regardless of location or income. This helps with recruiting because it gives top talent a feeling that they are part of something bigger than themselves. Being humble and willing to learn is something she learned early on in her career, when she didn’t really understand some of the lab based roles she was filling. It’s advice she would give to anyone in the industry, regardless of experience level. 09 Aug 2022 | Preparing for the Future with Fang Xu of A+E Networks | 00:12:28
On this episode of the Talent Acquisitions Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull is joined by Fang Xu, Head of Talent Acquisition and Head of Diversity at A+E Networks. The last several years have created massive transformations in what a typical work environment looks like. This, in turn, has changed the way talent managers have had to think about hiring practices and team structure. Fang has been right in the middle of that transition, beginning her work at A+E Networks from a remote position, and watching her pool of candidates grow as her organization expanded its area of operations because of the new opportunities for remote work. For Fang, all of these changes are an opportunity for the industry to evolve. Rather than simply adapting to the new normal, Fang thinks talent acquisition leaders should take the pandemic as a lesson in preparing for the unexpected. It’s not just about overcoming current challenges but creating an environment where flexibility and adaptability are themselves the new normal. To continue to meet the needs of their organization and their team in an ever more volatile market, talent acquisition leaders have to embrace the unexpected.

12 Apr 2021 | Identifying Technology Solutions and Optimizing Budgets for Talent Acquisition | 00:40:57
This episode of TA Leaders is a little bit different. While host Ryan Dull usually sits on the interviewer side of the table, this episode was recorded originally as an episode of Select Software Reviews. Their team was kind enough to let us include the audio of that episode for this edition of TA Leaders. In this episode, Ryan discusses his framework for helping organizations determine what HR technology they need and how they can optimize their budgets and workflows. The five areas he digs into with his clients are the delivery model, recruitment marketing spend, external partners and services, current technology in place, and process efficiency. Ryan goes on to dig deeper into managing talent acquisition budgets. For example, if you identify $200,000 in your budget that you can save, how do you reallocate it in a way that keeps it in your business unit? And how can you prioritize the most impactful things for your organization? There’s a lot of valuable information in there about how to optimize your budgets, where you might be wasting time and money, and how to think about HR technology purchasing. 16 Mar 2021 | COVID Hiring, DEI and the Future of Talent Acquisition, with Sean Barry of Walgreens | 00:22:22
On this episode, Sean Barry sits down with us to share his recruiting expertise and career experience over more than 20 years in talent acquisition. He’s currently the senior director of TA at Walgreens, leading talent acquisition across the organization. In 2020, that meant filling 135,000 jobs across the corporate call center, distribution center, and field networks. Sean dives into how he approached his first charge at Walgreens — creating an organizational structure allowing the team to expand and contract as needed while still providing a consistent candidate experience. He also describes changes they made at the beginning of COVID-19 to ensure faster hiring and onboarding, as well as what the company has done to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in the hiring process. In sharing his reflections, Sean also points towards what he sees coming for the future of talent acquisition, eyeing opportunities for differentiation in empathy, candidate experience, and anticipation of market needs. That future, he says, will be largely bolstered by technology. To future talent acquisition executives, he advises: “Learn as much as you can about technology. I think that the way you communicate, the way you engage with people, has evolved tremendously. And it’s only going to continue.” Mentioned in this episode: Learn more about Sagemark HR and consulting services around human resources technology at sagemarkhr.com. 10 Oct 2022 | Talent Engagement and Building (Not Buying) Talent with Ryan Maglione | 00:18:26
Today, host Ryan Dull is joined by Ryan Maglione, SVP Global Commercial Talent Acquisition & tsp at Syneos Health Commercial, to talk about the fundamentals of talent engagement. Well-designed processes and the latest technology can help in talent acquisition but without the right leadership for those processes, and the proper balance with technology, TA teams can miss the mark. For Ryan, helping an organization focus on talent is the same as helping it focus on its most important functions; these include: - Taking the time to build talent instead of just buying it. - Having the right culture, thinking, and people in the organization. - Telling the story of the organization and its goals. Ryan believes that thinking in these terms will avoid scrambling for talent. - Ryan Maglione - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-maglione-4189421/ - Syneos Health Commercial - LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/syneoshealthcommercialsolutions/ - Ryan Dull - https://www.linkedin.com/in/ryan-dull-743a8b4/ - Sagemark HR - LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/sagemark-hr/about/ This episode is brought to you by Sagemark HRSagemark HR can help you: ✔ Improve your talent practices and make better, more informed people decisions. 13 Dec 2021 | Rebuilding for a Positive Business Impact with Rob Daugherty of Lowe's | 00:23:17
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull welcomes Rob Daugherty, Vice President of Talent Acquisition, Lowe's Companies, Inc. Rob talks about his career journey in the TA space which, like many people, started with a conversation with a headhunter when he didn’t know what a headhunter was. He started at a boutique agency in Chicago and eventually moved into a corporate role at Kinko’s when they were moving from California to Texas. He spent time at several companies, including American Airlines, before landing at Lowe’s at the beginning of 2020. Rob enjoys the challenge of building or rebuilding an organization. He has done this at several organizations, and his latest rebuild began when he started at Lowe’s. They have a tremendous volume—over 7,500 hires per week—and when he started, the hiring system was labor-intensive and inefficient. He put automation systems in place and the results have been remarkable. Candidate satisfaction of the hiring process has jumped to a staggering 98% positive, and hiring manager satisfaction is 94%. He streamlined the process from a week to just 13 minutes. That’s taking rebuilding to another level. 06 Sep 2022 | The Compounding Effect of Creating a Great Experience for Your Team with Kelly Culler | 00:15:38
In today’s conversation, host Ryan Dull is joined by Kelly Culler, Senior HR Business Partner & VP of Talent Acquisition at Northwestern Mutual. They talk about the powerful effect that creating a great experience for your team can have on all stakeholders. More than ever, it is challenging to ensure that all individuals involved in talent acquisition (be they, candidates, hiring managers, or recruiters) have positive experiences. But that’s exactly why it’s important to include stakeholders. Their insights can help to glean data to optimize those experiences. For Kelly, creating a great experience for all stakeholders is one of the most important aspects of her job. She believes that if employees have a great experience, not only will that lead to higher engagement and retention, but it will also flow into the business and on to customers, vendors, and all constituents.

25 Jul 2023 | A Skills-Based Recruiting Philosophy with Julie Flowers at Chevron | 00:22:28
On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Julie Flowers, Head of Global Talent Acquisition at Chevron, to hear about the changes in recruiting philosophy she’s championing. When discussing skills-based hiring, Julie shared the following advice: - Collaboration between departments is essential for TA leaders to implement an effective strategy. - There is no one-size-fits-all recruiting approach, as every candidate is unique. - Global hiring and synergies are critical to scale; however, organizations should still retain a local focus, with each region leveraging a global strategy while creating a customized approach locally, as appropriate. - Evaluating a candidate’s experience should always be done from the perspective of what skills that experience developed in the candidate and what skills are transferable. - Skills-based hiring helps TA leaders more effectively meet their organization’s unique talent needs. - Technology is a significant aid that helps TA professionals streamline candidate screening and matching candidates. - As technology talent acquisition leaders should strive to comprehend the added value of emerging digital tools in order to purposefully acquire technology that can effectively appeal to, attract and select the best talent. - Talent acquisition is a community-driven industry, and TA leaders should be quick to learn from each other. With organizational collaboration, the right technology and a skills-based recruiting strategy, TA leaders can maintain a competitive edge in discovering and retaining the best talent. 03 Jan 2023 | Making the Most of Your Time with Matt Battista at Party City | 00:18:49
On today’s episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Matt Battista, Senior Director of Enterprise Talent Management at PCHI. Matt’s talent acquisition initiatives revolve primarily around saving the organization money and his team’s time by streamlining their workflows with technology and improved processes. For him, there are several key foundations to this approach: - A smaller team, when aided with technology and defined process, can be more agile and quick than a team with more moving parts. - Technology should be implemented to aid existing processes, not as an attempt to transform a workflow. - Never neglect the team members themselves. Effective communication between staff is a greater asset than the best technology. - Data is essential to using other assets well. - There is no one-size-fits-all strategic hiring plan. The only way to find and attract the best in class talent for your organization is to tailor your strategy according to the available data. - Tech tools are not an excuse to stop professional development. Improving your own skills and the skills of your team will help you use any tools more effectively. 13 Oct 2021 | Building a Team with Brent Schreckengost of Calix | 00:13:14
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull welcomes Brent Schreckengost, Director of Global Talent Acquisition at Calix. Calix provides cloud and software to communications service providers to enhance their subscribers’ experience. Brent sums up his journey into the TA space, which started 15 years ago at a recruiting agency. He worked in several agency and in-house environments, making valuable connections along the way. He was brought in at Calix in April of 2021 to build their TA organization. Before Brent got to Calix they were not very organized with their TA efforts, and they used several outside agencies. Brent saw that this wasn’t scalable so he set out to bring the function in-house. He has five recruiters and one sourcer on his team now, and it continues to grow. Brent tells Ryan about the culture they have built, especially when it comes to employees recruiting talent, no matter what department they work in. These efforts have been successful, with referral hiring up 35%+ in one quarter. He says that young talent coming into the TA space need to be careful not to get complacent. Complacency is the enemy of greatness. Solid advice. 26 Apr 2022 | Expanding the role of TA with Michael McMillan of Stryker | 00:16:57
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull is joined by Michael McMillan, Vice President of Global Talent Acquisitions and Corporate HR at Stryker. Michael was drawn into talent acquisitions after seeing the impact that one of his first hires had on a client that his company was supporting. That customer-centric focus has stayed with him throughout his career, and he maintains a recruitment philosophy that sees customer experience as the defining mission. In order to be effective in his role, Michael believes that it’s important to look beyond the walls of his job description and also gain experience in other tangential roles. Understanding the work of his colleagues makes Michael better equipped to find people who are not only good at their jobs, but that can also better support the broader mission of Stryker. According to Micahel, this holistic approach to talent acquisition is at the heart of his industry. Understanding the unspoken needs of his organization, and the needs of its customers, is essential to becoming an effective talent acquisition leader. That foundational understanding is only gained by seeking out diverse opportunities beyond what is typically expected of talent acquisitions specialists.

13 Jul 2022 | Watching Workforce Trends with Paul Shane of REV Group, Inc | 00:17:58
On this episode of the Talent Acquisitions Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull enjoys a conversation with Paul Shane, Senior Director, Talent Acquisition at REV Group, Inc. Talent acquisition is not a static industry. To be successful in finding and retaining the right people, Paul has to pay careful attention to shifts in social, economic, and political norms. These changing elements can alter the availability of talent, their effectiveness as a team member, and the ability of an organization to meet that team member’s needs. The last few years have been an excellent case study in the way these changing trends have forced businesses to reevaluate the way they approach recruitment. While the Covid-19 pandemic caused a radical transformation in such things as work environment and candidate expectations, Paul says that micro-transformations of a similar sort are actually happening all the time. The key to being an effective talent manager is to be aware of the small changes happening every day and to adapt to them, rather than simply waiting for an industry-shaking catastrophe like Covid-19. Change is always happening, and a good leader attacks that change with their recruiting strategy, rather than waiting for change to attack them.

16 Aug 2023 | Humanizing the Hiring Process with Tara Storms at Best Buy | 00:18:37
On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Tara Storms, Talent Acquisition Director at Best Buy, for some insight into the initiatives Tara is spearheading to improve her organization’s recruitment process. Tara discusses the following as it relates to improving the talent acquisition team: - Remember that talent acquisition is a relationship-oriented industry, and TA functions should help cultivate those relationships. - The hiring experience should be positive for both the candidate and the recruiter. - Hiring practices, from recruitment to onboarding and beyond, should be inclusive of all candidates. - Partnering with business leaders and collaborating across departments creates a more effective TA function. - Horizontal mobility is as important as vertical mobility for expanding existing hires’ skill sets and providing development opportunities. - Successful talent leaders not only build meaningful relationships within their organization but within the broader industry as well. - Always be open to learning new things, and look for ways to take on responsibilities outside your normal job scope to help facilitate that development. A focus on the human nature of hiring leads to a more positive hiring experience, thus improving both candidate conversion and retention. 03 May 2022 | Embracing the New Normal with Julie Teague of Danone | 00:25:18
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull speaks with Julie Teague, Senior Director and Head of Talent Acquisition at Danone North America, about what talent recruitment looks like in a post-Covid world. The last two years have brought many profound changes to the way businesses operate. An increase in remote work availability, non-traditional workweeks, and expanded employee benefits all contribute to the formation of new expectations that employees now have of the companies they work for. These expectations have an enormous impact on the way talent recruitment is conducted. Finding people with the appropriate work environment flexibility, and being willing to be flexible yourself, is a new challenge facing talent acquisition leaders. While some businesses are trying to return to pre-pandemic standards, Julie thinks the future of recruitment is in embracing a new normal. To her, these challenges are opportunities in disguise to revolutionize the way TA is conducted, creating more effective teams by catering to the new needs of her employees. As companies grapple with the way workplace culture is evolving, Julie thinks success lies in recruiting according to that culture, not dragging culture backward to maintain prior recruiting standards.

15 Mar 2022 | Rethinking Technology with Mike Ganiere of Northwestern Mutual | 00:20:38
On this episode of the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast, host Ryan Dull welcomes Mike Ganiere, Senior Director of Talent Acquisition at Northwestern Mutual. Like many professionals in the TA industry, Mike started his career outside of recruiting. He worked in sales for companies like Pepsi and Nestle before getting into the talent acquisition space. After a stint at Robert Half, he made the jump to executive search in 2008, which eventually led to his role today at Northwestern Mutual. There is tremendous growth happening at his company, and Mike and his team have had to make some adjustments in their processes and their thinking. They’ve grown from around 20 people to over 100 in just two years. This has meant using technology to automate some processes and streamline others. He believes in empowering recruiters with tools that let them use their critical thinking skills to be more of a management consultant and not just a recruiter. He believes that TA leaders need to be flexible in their thinking as the business demands change. Doing things the way they’ve always been done is no longer an option if you want to survive in today’s unprecedented competitive landscape. 30 May 2023 | Adapting to New Technology with Carrie Losch at Johnson Controls | 00:20:26
On this episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Carrie Losch, Director of Talent Acquisition at Johnson Controls, to hear how she’s helping her organization adopt new digital tools without leaning too heavily on technology to do the heavy lifting of recruiting. When it comes to implementing new technology, Carrie offers several principles for maintaining an organization’s current strengths through a digital transition: - Don’t view technology as an end in itself. It’s just another tool in a lineup of existing resources. - Technology is best used as a time-saving tool to free up team members to do tasks that require a human touch. - The best digital resource is only as good as the system that functions on top of it. Poor process planning can’t be made up for by technology. - Talent Acquisition is a human industry. Use technology to enhance that, not detract from it. - Effective onboarding, training and professional development require human relationships, not technological streamlining. As the technological landscape continues to be in flux, talent leaders have to maintain the flexibility that allows them to implement new assets without undermining their organization’s current strengths. 17 Jan 2023 | Using Data To Improve the Candidate Experience with Keith Friant at Comcast | 00:12:45
On today’s episode, host Ryan Dull is joined by Keith Friant, Director of Talent Acquisition at Comcast, to hear how Keith is approaching talent management from a data-centric perspective. - Gathering feedback from candidates is essential in improving the candidate experience. - Gathering data can be as simple as having candidates respond to surveys, much like a customer satisfaction survey. - Scaling can be difficult with an RPO, and in-house hiring is the best way to build teams that align with company values. - The candidate experience isn’t limited to the hiring process, but encompasses all the time a candidate spends growing and developing within an organization post-hire. - Ensuring employees find opportunities for professional development within a company is an equally important job for TA leaders. - Frontline labor will continue to be competitive for the foreseeable future, so creative hiring practices must continue to be a TA priority. With a systematic approach to data acquisition and hiring, Keith is able to ensure his organization not only finds top talent, but maintains its longevity. 31 Aug 2021 | Improving TA Processes with Shelley Radford of The Wonderful Company | 00:14:01
Shelley Radford, VP of Talent Acquisition at The Wonderful Company joins the Talent Acquisition Leaders podcast on this episode, and she shares with host Ryan Dull stories about her career path, how it led to her role at Wonderful, and her thoughts on being entrepreneurial versus being centralized in a large organization. Shelly started at a staffing agency where she learned the ins and outs of the administrative and process side of talent acquisition that would be important throughout her career. She held positions at several organizations, including some where she didn’t have much enthusiasm for the industry. That time taught her an important lesson, that she needs to be passionate about the industry she’s working in to be at her best. That led her to Wonderful, first as a consultant followed by a full-time role to build out a talent acquisition team. Wonderful has a large philanthropic footprint in California and beyond, and she is currently building a team in Corporate Responsibility which consists of seven different departments. 29 Nov 2022 | Keeping a Competitive Edge with Shameka Dukes at Sysco | 00:16:39
On today’s episode, host Ryan Dull welcomes Shameka Dukes, Director of Corporate Talent Acquisition at Sysco, to learn about some of the ways that talent leaders can maintain success in an increasingly competitive talent market. In a post-Covid world, Shameka offers some points for consideration for talent leaders navigating a new work environment: - Recruiters now have more competitors due to the rise of remote work. Competition is no longer limited by geographic proximity. - Companies are no longer as interested in specific backgrounds or qualifications. Future professional development is a part of recruitment practices. - Increased hiring specialization can take some burden off different departments within an organization. - Flexibility and adaptability are more desirable traits than a specific skill set. - HR departments must be prepared to respond quickly to increased loads on specific organizational operations. - Teams can get ahead of workload surges by being proactive in their operations rather than reactive. - Hiring managers need an abundance of information on company direction and values in order to perform effectively. Shameka’s advice can help talent leaders stay on the leading edge of a market exploding in competitive activity.
